2. 0:03to Harper High School Harper is home to
3. 0:07almost 1500 students in this lowincome
4. 0:10inner city neighborhood only 40% of the
5. 0:12students here end up with a diploma if
6. 0:15you want something to Harper I mean you
7. 0:17really got to fight for it it's hard
8. 0:20it's hard 35 miles Due West of harpa
9. 0:24high is daa Valley High School set in
10. 0:26the affluent suburb of deerville it is a
11. 0:2960 $2 million state-of-the-art facility
12. 0:33the graduation rate here is
13. 0:3699% I think all of us it was just a
14. 0:39given that we would graduate from high
15. 0:40school on a cold Tuesday Morning a
16. 0:43busload of students from the school in
17. 0:45neille arrive at Harper High
18. 0:49School the metal detectors are the first
19. 0:52big
20. 0:54surprise out I was scared I mean I'm not
21. 0:58going to lie it became very intimidating
22. 1:00and very like uh do I feel safe coins
23. 1:04coin yeah the kids from the inner city
24. 1:08aren't expecting what they find when
25. 1:10they get off the bus either this school
26. 1:13is way better than I thought it would be
27. 1:16the best school in Chicago can't even
28. 1:17competi
29. 1:19this the differences between the two
30. 1:21schools are immediately apparent this is
31. 1:24the olympic size pool at the school in
32. 1:27Suburbia this is our pool over here yeah
33. 1:30W this is real nice there's a pool at
34. 1:33Harper too but it hasn't been filled
35. 1:35with water in 10
36. 1:38years oh it leaks in the suburbs there's
37. 1:42a state-of-the-art gym and fitness
38. 1:44center oh my good y'all get tread meals
39. 1:49and bikes and do you guys have a cardio
40. 1:52room or
41. 1:53no back in Chicago the visiting kids
42. 1:56find a rundown gym with a leaking
43. 1:59ceiling fall apart wonder if it's like
44. 2:03water and a beat up weit room oh my
45. 2:06goodness that would be so uncomfortable
46. 2:08they have worn through a lot of it's
47. 2:10like really really old as they sited on
48. 2:13classes they quickly discover this
49. 2:15curriculum is far more rigorous than at
50. 2:18Harper High okay so this is just our
51. 2:19normal PFT Tiffany who hopes to major in
52. 2:22business management and earned an A in
53. 2:24trigonometry at Harper High comes out of
54. 2:26the class clearly worried I was looking
55. 2:29at their map problems that they're doing
56. 2:31and I'm looking like what language is
57. 2:33that soon as I get to College I'm going
58. 2:36be lost that might help explain these
59. 2:39alarming test scores at Harper High
60. 2:41School just 16% of the students tested
61. 2:43are meeting state standards and reading
62. 2:461.5% in science and in math
63. 2:51.5% compare those figures to the scores
64. 2:53at the suburban school 78% meet state
65. 2:57standards in Reading 76% % in science
66. 3:01and 77% in math if we had the same
67. 3:05opportunities that they have here a lot
68. 3:07of our test scores would just go
69. 3:10up there are more than two dozen
70. 3:12advanced placement classes ordered to
71. 3:15the students in the Suburban school they
72. 3:17got it made here I mean it's just like
73. 3:20it's endless opportunity and I just wish
74. 3:22we had those that hoer at Harper High
75. 3:25there are a total of two advanced
76. 3:27placement classes over and over they see
77. 3:30the glaring inequities between the two
78. 3:32schools it is a harsh lesson that leaves
79. 3:34many of the kids asking why feel like
80. 3:39I've been cheated I've been chipped they
81. 3:42have way way more than we have at our
82. 3:45school it's sad it really is it's sad
83. 3:49it's so mind-blowing to think about that
84. 3:51there's such a difference and we're both
85. 3:52in the same state within an hour away
86. 3:55from each other we really take the
87. 3:57resources for granted and that's one
88. 3:59reason that this is such an eye opener
89. 4:02I'm glad that y'all have it cuz if we
90. 4:03don't have it I'm glad somebody have it
91. 4:05but it's the simple fact that we see
92. 4:07y'all do a well we want to do well too
93. 4:09as a parent Wanita as a parent of a of a
94. 4:12of a child who's going to Harper what do
95. 4:14you feel after seeing
96. 4:16this
97. 4:17I'm I'm I'm speechless I'm literally I
98. 4:21saw you gasp when you saw the school I
99. 4:23kind of gas too when I saw the gym I
100. 4:25mean it's ridic it's ridiculous and I
101. 4:28had actually never been in a gym but
102. 4:30just to see it is really like bringing
103. 4:32tears to my eyes
104. 4:33because I want my child to have the same
105. 4:36possibilities to everybody else has and
106. 4:38it's ridiculous
107. 4:40that it's ridiculous that those children
108. 4:43should have that and our kids can't have
109. 4:45it too MH there's so much possibility
110. 4:48and so much potential in these schools
111. 4:49but if you don't give them what they
112. 4:52need what else are they going to do it's
113. 4:54also about what the
