- 0:00A single serving of food at a
- 0:01restaurant costs 100 yen, and rent is
- 0:03in the 10,000 yen range per month. This
- 0:05isn't a story I have, it's a real story
- 0:07from a country that actually exists.
- 0:09This time, I'll introduce the top 10
- 0:10countries with the lowest cost of
- 0:12living in the world. The rankings are
- 0:14not based on my personal preferences,
- 0:16but on real data from the 2026 edition
- 0:18of Numbeo, the world's largest cost of
- 0:20living database, which ranks each
- 0:22country in order of lowest cost of
- 0:24living. The top 5 in the latter half
- 0:26include countries with prices half that
- 0:29of Japan, and countries where you can
- 0:31live on 50,000 yen per month. Finally,
- 0:33I'll also reveal where Japan ranks in
- 0:35the world in the ranking of countries
- 0:36with the lowest cost of living. Take a
- 0:38look and see what you think it will
- 0:41rank. I think it will be helpful when
- 0:43looking for a place to travel or
- 0:45immigrate. Vietnam, ranked 10th, has a
- 0:48cost of living index of 26.4, about
- 0:50half that of Japan. A cup of the famous
- 0:534 costs 30,000 to 50,000 dong. That's a
- 0:56little over 200 yen in Japanese yen.
- 0:58Vietnamese coffee from street stalls
- 1:00costs around 100 yen. A bottle of water
- 1:02costs about 60 yen. I lived there for
- 1:04about half a year, and after deducting
- 1:06rent, my husband and I were able to
- 1:08live for about 80,000 yen per month.
- 1:10Tourist areas are quite expensive. But
- 1:13the moment you step into a market or a
- 1:15food stall, things suddenly become
- 1:16cheaper. This convenience is what makes
- 1:18Vietnam so cheap. Incidentally, Vietnam
- 1:21has also been ranked number one in the
- 1:23world's list of countries you don't
- 1:25want to visit again. There are various
- 1:27reasons for this, including the chaotic
- 1:29traffic conditions and the difference
- 1:30in satellite concepts. Cheapness isn't
- 1:32the only appeal of this country. If you
- 1:35come here just for that, you might
- 1:36think you'll never come back.
- 1:38Personally, I love this country, so if
- 1:40you want to see more of the interesting
- 1:42chaos in Vietnam, please watch this
- 1:44video. In 9th place is Iran. Persia in
- 1:48the Middle East is a famous country.
- 1:50The price index is 22.8. Iran's
- 1:54currency has been weak for a long time,
- 1:55so if you bring Japanese yen with you,
- 1:57the local prices will feel so cheap
- 1:59that you'll be thrown off by an order
- 2:01of magnitude. Eating out costs about
- 2:03400 yen per meal, and a can of cola is
- 2:06about 80 yen. No, it's not that cheap.
- 2:09No, there's another reason why Iran is
- 2:12so cheap. As an oil powerhouse and with
- 2:14government aid, gasoline is about a
- 2:16third the price of Japan. Vegetables
- 2:18are also cheap, with tomatoes costing
- 2:2090 yen per kilogram, and a subway ride
- 2:22costs about 30 yen. You don't really
- 2:24benefit from cheap prices when you
- 2:25travel, but once you start living here,
- 2:27you start to see how cheap they are.
- 2:29However, the real reason for this
- 2:30cheapness is also the country's
- 2:32circumstances. Due to economic
- 2:33sanctions, foreign credit cards are
- 2:35almost unusable and you have to rely on
- 2:37cash. The internet costs around 400 yen
- 2:39a month, but there are strict
- 2:41regulations. Travel information is also
- 2:43limited, and to be honest, it's hard to
- 2:44say that this is a country you can just
- 2:46drop by. The currency collapsed due to
- 2:48sanctions. This is a good example of
- 2:50how cheap and easy to get to are two
- 2:52completely different things. Bangladesh
- 2:54, India's neighbor, is ranked 8th. It
- 2:57has one of the highest population
- 2:59densities in the world. Its index is
- 3:0122.8, tied with Iran. This may be the
- 3:05cheapest place I've ever been to. At a
- 3:09local restaurant, I could eat my fill
- 3:11for just 100 yen. The famous biryani
- 3:13costs 150 to 250 yen, but it's served
- 3:16in large quantities for just over 200
- 3:18yen. Water costs 25 yen. Even
- 3:21apartments in the suburbs can be as
- 3:23cheap as 12,000 yen a month. You can
- 3:25find one for around 15,000 yen. However
- 3:28, it's important to note that cheap
- 3:30prices always come with a price tag. To
- 3:32be honest, I was very careful about
- 3:34this. Of course, you can't drink the
- 3:36tap water, and I don't know when they
- 3:38started reusing the oil at the food
- 3:40stalls. You can eat at a restaurant for
- 3:4250 yen or so, but I would only
- 3:44recommend it to people with strong
- 3:45stomachs. And there are just so many
- 3:48people. More people live in this small
- 3:50country than in Japan, and the towns
- 3:52are always packed with people and
- 3:54vehicles. When I was having trouble
- 3:56getting on the train because it was
- 3:58full, an old man on the roof of the
- 3:59train called me over and said there was
- 4:01a seat over there. Whether you find
- 4:03this chaos tiring or makes you feel
- 4:05alive will clearly determine whether
- 4:07you are suited to it or not. It's a
- 4:09country that offers more than just
- 4:11cheapness. Madagascar, in 7th place, is
- 4:13the country that was also featured in a
- 4:16movie. The fourth largest island nation
- 4:18in the world, located off the eastern
- 4:20coast of Africa. The price index is
- 4:2322.5. The currency is called Ariya Ari.
- 4:26It's cute. The local food in
- 4:28Antananarivo is particularly cheap. At
- 4:31local restaurants called gali and dai,
- 4:33you can eat a hearty set meal of rice,
- 4:35the staple food, topped with plenty of
- 4:38meat and vegetables, for around 150 yen
- 4:40. Water costs around 80 yen. Apartments
- 4:43can cost 300,000 yen or more a month.
- 4:45There are even apartments that cost as
- 4:47little as 10,000 yen. If you just look
- 4:49at the cheapness of the rent, it's the
- 4:50negligible number one in this top 10.
- 4:52Because the flow of evolution was
- 4:54independent on this island, it's full
- 4:55of plants that only grow here. It's
- 4:57also a world-famous producer of vanilla
- 5:00, and nature is like a different
- 5:02version of Earth, full of mysterious
- 5:04plants. To be honest, though, the
- 5:06infrastructure is minimal. This place
- 5:08is more like jumping into the ocean
- 5:10than living a convenient life. This is
- 5:12a country for people who enjoy
- 5:14cheapness and don't care about it. 6th
- 5:16place: Nepal. This country is the
- 5:19gateway to Mount Everest and other
- 5:21mountains. The index is 22.6. A set
- 5:24meal of dal bhat bean soup and rice,
- 5:27which is the national specialty, costs
- 5:29less than 200 yen if converted to 150
- 5:31rupees. Water costs just over 30 yen,
- 5:33which is cheap compared to other
- 5:35countries. Apartments in Kathmandu or
- 5:38the lake town of Pokhara cost 15,000
- 5:40rupees a month, or 17,000 yen in
- 5:43Japanese yen. The great thing about
- 5:45Nepal is that even though it's so cheap
- 5:47, you have the world's highest
- 5:48mountains right in front of you.
- 5:50Drinking tea on the terrace in the
- 5:51morning, you can see snow-capped
- 5:53mountains reaching 8,000 meters in the
- 5:55distance. You can live a life where
- 5:56such views are a part of your daily
- 5:58life for just a few tens of thousands
- 5:59of yen a month. It's not flashy, but
- 6:01it's a country that will appeal deeply
- 6:02to those who want to spend their time
- 6:04leisurely. Interestingly, Nepal does
- 6:06not use the Gregorian calendar, but
- 6:08uses its own unique Bigram calendar.
- 6:10It's 2026 in Japan, but it's 2082 in
- 6:14Nepal. If you want to travel back in
- 6:17time, definitely go there. Here are the
- 6:19top 5. The country that everyone
- 6:21imagines is also included. In 5th place
- 6:24is Egypt, the country of the pyramids
- 6:26and the Sphinx. The price index is 21.6
- 6:30. The home of that ancient civilization
- 6:32is now attracting attention as one of
- 6:34the world's cheapest areas. I've
- 6:36actually been there myself. A plate of
- 6:39rice, pasta, and beans, a dish that
- 6:42looks like a mass of carbohydrates,
- 6:44costs about 40 pounds (120 yen). It
- 6:47might make you gain weight, but it's
- 6:48enough to fill you up completely. Water
- 6:51costs 30 yen. Rent in the city center
- 6:54can be as low as 10,000 pounds a month,
- 6:56or around 30,000 yen. Why is it so
- 6:59cheap? The reason is that the Egyptian
- 7:01currency has fallen significantly in
- 7:03the last few years. People are crying
- 7:05about the weak yen, but the Egyptian
- 7:07pound is even weaker. To put it simply,
- 7:09it's like 10,000 yen has become worth
- 7:127,000 yen. If the value of the yen has
- 7:15fallen by 30%, then it's like 10,000
- 7:18pounds has become worth 3,000 poB. It's
- 7:21like its value has fallen by 70%.
- 7:24However, Egypt is sometimes called one
- 7:26of the world's three largest countries.
- 7:29In fact, there were a lot of scammers
- 7:31at the Giza Pyramids, trying to sell me
- 7:33strange pyramid-shaped souvenirs for
- 7:35200 yen. Even if it's cheap, I don't
- 7:37want it. In exchange for cheap prices,
- 7:40small incidents happen every day. It's
- 7:42a country where you can enjoy this kind
- 7:44of chaos. Afghanistan is in 4th place,
- 7:46with a price index of 21.1. The
- 7:49atmosphere changes here. If you look at
- 7:51the numbers alone, it's the 4th
- 7:53cheapest country in the world to live
- 7:54in. Afghanistan is a regular at the top
- 7:56of the world's rankings of countries
- 7:58with the worst security. The Japanese
- 8:00Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also
- 8:01issued the highest level of evacuation
- 8:03order almost a year ago. In other words
- 8:05, no matter how cheap prices are,
- 8:07travelling or immigrating is not a
- 8:09realistic option. The reason why prices
- 8:11are cheap in Afghanistan is, as you
- 8:13might expect, because the economy is
- 8:15collapsing, with the US freezing $ 3.5
- 8:17billion in Afghan government funding
- 8:19and international aid being cut off
- 8:21from 2022 to 1/5. The average monthly
- 8:24income in Afghanistan is about 41,000
- 8:27yen. Demand has collapsed, so even
- 8:29though prices are low, locals can't
- 8:31afford them. Cheap eat-outs are the
- 8:33norm, with prices around 370 yen and
- 8:35potatoes costing 80 yen per kilogram.
- 8:37Well, they are cheap, but they are a
- 8:40bit unrealistic. In third place,
- 8:42Pakistan. The price index is 19.6. The
- 8:46cost of living is roughly 40%of that in
- 8:48Japan. It is another country that is a
- 8:50bit difficult to travel to. Pakistan
- 8:52has very cheap local food at street
- 8:54stalls. A cola costs around 30 yen and
- 8:56a liter of gasoline costs 150 yen. Rent
- 8:59starts from around 10,000 yen. Another
- 9:01big reason is that it is a major
- 9:02agricultural country and the country
- 9:04produces its own food. Food inflation
- 9:06is high, but the base cost of food is
- 9:08cheap to begin with. However, the
- 9:09situation in Pakistan varies greatly
- 9:11depending on the region. Some cities
- 9:13are also visited by tourists, but the
- 9:15Ministry of Foreign Affairs 'danger
- 9:16information shows that areas requiring
- 9:18high vigilance, especially in border
- 9:20areas, are spreading. And due to power
- 9:22shortages, monthly high heating bills
- 9:24can reach 15,000 yen. Planned power
- 9:26outages are a daily occurrence, making
- 9:28it difficult to use electricity
- 9:30casually. People don't just rush to
- 9:32travel because it's cheap. This is a
- 9:34country where cheap prices and safe
- 9:36living conditions are not yet balanced.
- 9:38India is ranked second with a price
- 9:41index of 18.9, less than half that of
- 9:44Japan. I've been there a few times, but
- 9:46those who have been there either get
- 9:48hooked or never want to go back. Anyway
- 9:51, it's a world where you can eat your
- 9:53fill for 200 yen or so. But I don't
- 9:56really know what you're eating.
- 9:57Everything is curry-flavored. My
- 10:00personal favorite is tea, which costs
- 10:0210 to 20 rupees, or about 20 to 35 yen.
- 10:05When you're done drinking, you break
- 10:07the clay glass and throw it away. It's
- 10:09an interesting style to pick it up and
- 10:11get another glass. A set meal thali
- 10:13costs 200 rupees. There are also many
- 10:15restaurants that offer unlimited
- 10:17refills for around 300 yen. You can
- 10:18find a room in the city of Delhi for as
- 10:20little as 30,000 yen per month, which
- 10:22is 20,000 rupees per month. Unlike
- 10:24Afghanistan and Pakistan, it is a
- 10:26popular country for tourists. To be
- 10:28honest, the hygiene is not great. I,
- 10:31like many others, have had stomachaches
- 10:34several times. India is also considered
- 10:36one of the world's three largest
- 10:38countries. Prices are cheap, but there
- 10:41are many people who ask for tips from
- 10:43tourists and ask for money on the
- 10:45street. But that's not the case. There
- 10:47are definitely experiences that can
- 10:49only be had here, beyond the question
- 10:50of whether something is cheap or
- 10:52expensive. Even if you get ripped off
- 10:54and lose 20,000 yen, that's still a
- 10:56memory. Cows are sleeping in the middle
- 10:58of the road and no one is moving them.
- 11:00When you're told it's okay, there are
- 11:02usually only problems. In exchange for
- 11:04giving up convenience and efficiency,
- 11:05you come back with something big.
- 11:07That's the kind of country it is. And
- 11:09in first place. The country with the
- 11:12cheapest cost of living in the world is
- 11:14Libya. The price index is 18.3. It's
- 11:17the cheapest by far, less than half
- 11:20that of Japan. As an oil-producing
- 11:22country, fuel and energy are said to be
- 11:25extremely cheap. It is a beautiful
- 11:27African country facing the Pacific
- 11:29Ocean. But you've probably figured it
- 11:31out already. At this point, the answer
- 11:33is obvious. Libya is a country that the
- 11:35Ministry of Foreign Affairs has listed
- 11:36as a Level 4 danger alert, the highest
- 11:38level, and is recommended to be avoided
- 11:40. In other words, the country that is
- 11:41currently the cheapest in the world
- 11:43according to the data, but in reality
- 11:44you can't go there, is still in first
- 11:46place. Well, how cheap is it? It's an
- 11:49oil-producing country, so gasoline is
- 11:52naturally the cheapest in the world at
- 11:544 yen per liter. And it's cheap because
- 11:57the national model returns oil revenue
- 11:59to the people. In the past, under the
- 12:01Gaddafi regime, education, healthcare,
- 12:03electricity, and water were almost free
- 12:05. It's a shame that the remnants of
- 12:07that structure are still keeping prices
- 12:09artificially low. If you rank countries
- 12:11in order of cheapest cost of living,
- 12:13you'll find countries at the very end
- 12:15that are so cheap that you can't live
- 12:16there. Cheap countries always have
- 12:19economic collapse and a weak sense of
- 12:21social responsibility. If you just
- 12:23think that cheap countries are good
- 12:25value for money, you tend to overlook
- 12:27the lives of the local people. Libya is
- 12:31the answer that clearly shows this. So
- 12:36far we've looked at the world's
- 12:38cheapest countries, but where does
- 12:40Japan rank? Out of 140 countries in the
- 12:43world, Japan is roughly 80th, and in
- 12:45terms of cost of living index, it's
- 12:4847.5, which is just a little bit higher
- 12:51than the middle. Japan is often said to
- 12:55be super cheap, but when compared to
- 12:57the rest of the world, it's slightly
- 12:59above the middle, and while it's said
- 13:01to be cheap, it's not that cheap.
- 13:03Conversely, it also means that there
- 13:05are so many countries in the world that
- 13:08are much cheaper. I think that if you
- 13:10think about it from this perspective of
- 13:12being in the middle, your perspective
- 13:14on value will change. I've been saying
- 13:16it's good today, but of course good
- 13:18doesn't mean good in a good country.
- 13:20Even if the rent is 1/3, you can't
- 13:22drink the tap water. The internet is
- 13:24unstable. It's not safe to go there in
- 13:27the first place. You're definitely
- 13:28paying for these invisible costs
- 13:30somewhere. And it's a waste to decide
- 13:32where to travel or move based solely on
- 13:34cheapness. There are many popular cheap
- 13:37travel destinations, such as Vietnam
- 13:39and India, but the appeal of these
- 13:41countries lies in something more than
- 13:43just good value for money. If you were
- 13:45to live on 100,000 yen a month, which
- 13:47of the 10 countries today would you
- 13:49choose? Or would you rather live in
- 13:51Japan? Please let me know in the
- 13:53comments. Your experiences, comments,
- 13:56and opinions will be helpful to me and
- 13:58other viewers. Thank you for watching
- 14:01until the end.
