  1. 0:00hey everyone it's sean from empire drone
  2. 0:02today we're going to talk about some of
  3. 0:03the benefits of using drones
  4. 0:05for agriculture and farming
  5. 0:08[Music]
  6. 0:15drones are reshaping pretty much every
  7. 0:17industry and agriculture is no exception
  8. 0:20they're helping a lot of people in the
  9. 0:21agriculture industry growers
  10. 0:23ranchers academics to bring about better
  11. 0:25faster and healthier workflows
  12. 0:27and yields not to mention costs drones
  13. 0:30are also lowering the cost of
  14. 0:31traditionally
  15. 0:32capital intensive operations let's take
  16. 0:35a look at the five ways drones are being
  17. 0:37used
  18. 0:38in agriculture the first use case is
  19. 0:40scouting specifically scouting
  20. 0:42through map making drones even some
  21. 0:44consumer grade models
  22. 0:46are able to make incredibly detailed
  23. 0:48maps of growing fields
  24. 0:49using a process called photogrammetry by
  25. 0:52flying an automated grid
  26. 0:53the drone captures regular photos of the
  27. 0:56field below
  28. 0:57through software like pix4d or
  29. 0:59dronedeploy these photos are stitched
  30. 1:01together to create something called an
  31. 1:02orthomosaic
  32. 1:03this orthomosaic is an accurate
  33. 1:05representation of the ground below
  34. 1:07measurements like length area and
  35. 1:09volumes
  36. 1:10can be pulled from this orthomosaic data
  37. 1:12not to mention
  38. 1:14areas of crop damage irrigation issues
  39. 1:16and more
  40. 1:17can quickly be identified by creating an
  41. 1:19instant google map of this nature
  42. 1:21growers can also incorporate more
  43. 1:23advanced sensors such as multi-spectral
  44. 1:25or thermal
  45. 1:26sensors for more advanced data
  46. 1:28acquisition
  47. 1:29some like the mica sense altum also have
  48. 1:31a thermal sensor
  49. 1:33for an even deeper look at field health
  50. 1:35like water drainage issues and more
  51. 1:38this data can be used to identify
  52. 1:39specific areas of the field in need for
  53. 1:42targeted spring
  54. 1:43the second use case is aerial spraying
  55. 1:45by drone
  56. 1:46spraying drones have come a long way and
  57. 1:48the latest iteration by dji
  58. 1:50the aggress t20 is an amazing machine i
  59. 1:53won't talk too much about the t20 here
  60. 1:56check out our other video on the t20 for
  61. 1:58more info on this drone
  62. 1:59brain drones are used to apply herbicide
  63. 2:01pesticides
  64. 2:02and other liquid applications directly
  65. 2:04to the field the great thing is that
  66. 2:06many spraying drones can be flown fully
  67. 2:08autonomously
  68. 2:09these drones are intelligent enough to
  69. 2:10know when to return for a fresh battery
  70. 2:13or more liquid payload in autonomous
  71. 2:15flight mode
  72. 2:16drones like the t20 are able to cover
  73. 2:18just under 30 acres per hour
  74. 2:20with its 21 foot spray with and as
  75. 2:22mentioned in the previous section
  76. 2:24when coupled with plant health maps
  77. 2:26operators of drone sprayers can
  78. 2:27precisely target
  79. 2:28only areas of the field in need this
  80. 2:31reduces material waste
  81. 2:32time and environmental runoff this is
  82. 2:35precision agriculture at its finest
  83. 2:37our third use case uses the same
  84. 2:39spraying drone
  85. 2:41but for spreading drones like the dji
  86. 2:43aggress t20
  87. 2:44are able to quickly convert from
  88. 2:46spraying mode to spreading mode
  89. 2:48spreading attachments are used to put
  90. 2:49down solids like granular fertilizers
  91. 2:52and seeds unlike spring which is
  92. 2:54obviously used to put down
  93. 2:55liquid payload these spraying drones are
  94. 2:57able to dispense up to 33 pounds
  95. 3:00a minute of granular product a great use
  96. 3:03case of spreading drones
  97. 3:04is for putting down cover crop cover
  98. 3:06crop like clover
  99. 3:07reduces the amount of soil loss due to
  100. 3:10erosion
  101. 3:10and over time actually increases your
  102. 3:13organic matter content
  103. 3:14which leads to greater improvements in
  104. 3:16soil structure stability
  105. 3:18and increased moisture and nutrient
  106. 3:20holding capacity
  107. 3:21cover crop can also help with weed
  108. 3:23mitigation
  109. 3:24where the cover crop quickly grows and
  110. 3:26chokes out possible weed seed emergence
  111. 3:28ahead of the planting and growing season
  112. 3:30so you can see there's a lot of benefits
  113. 3:32to putting down cover crop
  114. 3:33in your field one of the major issues
  115. 3:36with traditional cover crop application
  116. 3:38is the compaction of the field using
  117. 3:40tractors and heavy equipment
  118. 3:41the beauty of drones is that they fly
  119. 3:43over the field spreading cover crop
  120. 3:45any time of the year without compacting
  121. 3:47or negatively affecting
  122. 3:48your soil in our tests with the agaris
  123. 3:51t20
  124. 3:52we were able to put down about 15 acres
  125. 3:54an hour of clover in a wheat field
  126. 3:56at 10 pounds an acre if you were to fly
  127. 3:58multiple drones at the same time
  128. 4:00from one controller which you're able to
  129. 4:01do with the t20 you can actually fly up
  130. 4:03to three at a time from one controller
  131. 4:05you can expect to cover up to 45 acres
  132. 4:08an hour
  133. 4:08we see a very bright future when it
  134. 4:10comes to drones and cover crop
  135. 4:12application
  136. 4:12the fourth category and a very
  137. 4:14interesting one is livestock management
  138. 4:17farmers and ranchers are using drones to
  139. 4:19keep track of their herds
  140. 4:20and keep them safe drones are able to
  141. 4:22scout long distances
  142. 4:24looking for the herd or potential strays
  143. 4:26and if the rancher is using a thermal
  144. 4:28camera drone
  145. 4:29livestock can be located any time of day
  146. 4:32and more quickly through their thermal
  147. 4:34signature the last use case is similar
  148. 4:36to the livestock use case
  149. 4:38scouting with a drone is very easy and
  150. 4:40can be performed with either an rgb or
  151. 4:42thermal camera again drones are able to
  152. 4:44cover a wide area
  153. 4:46very quickly after a storm or another
  154. 4:48event a drone can be flown out to check
  155. 4:50the fields
  156. 4:51structures and any other subject much
  157. 4:53faster than by vehicle or foot
  158. 4:55and in many cases it's a lot safer to
  159. 4:57send a drone first before ground
  160. 4:58truthing yourself
  161. 5:00so that was a look at some of the
  162. 5:01benefits of using drones for agriculture
  163. 5:02and farming
  164. 5:03feel free to reach out with any
  165. 5:05questions you may have about drones and
  166. 5:06agriculture
