- 0:00you can't always believe what you read
- 0:03in the papers the movies are always
- 0:05accurate right welcome to watchmojo.com
- 0:12for this list we're taking a look at
- 0:14details about the life of Richard Jewell
- 0:16that Clint Eastwood's biographical film
- 0:18got right and wrong in case you haven't
- 0:20seen the movie yet consider this your
- 0:22spoiler alert number 10 Jewell
- 0:24discovered the backpack bomb right
- 0:26director Clint Eastwood does a very
- 0:28effective job at recreating Atlanta
- 0:30Centennial Olympic Park bombing that
- 0:32took place at the 1996 Summer Olympics
- 0:34as the film shows us it was jewel who
- 0:37discovered the green military field pack
- 0:39under a bench near a sound tower jewel
- 0:44alerted the authorities of the
- 0:45suspicious package which had been filled
- 0:47with three pipe bombs surrounded by
- 0:49masonry nails along with the other
- 0:51security guards Jewell helped to
- 0:52partially clear the area before the bomb
- 0:54went off in addition to leaving 111
- 1:00people injured the explosion was
- 1:02directly responsible for one death and
- 1:04later caused a fatal heart attack the
- 1:06body count may have been higher if it
- 1:08weren't for Jule who was praised as a
- 1:10hero in the press until the story
- 1:12shifted Richard your national hero now
- 1:15thank you sir number nine Jules
- 1:18early friendship with his lawyer right
- 1:20according to the film
- 1:21Jule and his future lawyer Watson Bryant
- 1:24worked in the same building ten years
- 1:25prior to the 1996 bombing the two really
- 1:28did form a friendship at a federal
- 1:30disaster relief agency where jewel was a
- 1:32mailroom clerk and Bryant practiced law
- 1:34according to the 1997 Vanity Fair
- 1:36article American Nightmare The Ballad of
- 1:38Richard Jewell quote Bryant had always
- 1:41had a soft spot for oddballs and strays
- 1:43you're a suspect you don't talk
- 1:46don't say autumn tone this is true to
- 1:48how their friendship is depicted in the
- 1:50film as Bryant takes an unlikely shine
- 1:52to the awkward jewel even the running
- 1:54joke about jewel giving Bryant Snickers
- 1:56bars is accurate quote you could say I'm
- 1:58hungry and suddenly this kid would be by
- 2:00your side with a Snickers bar Brian
- 2:01stated name is Richard Jewell he's a
- 2:03hero
- 2:04number eight Bryant was Jules only
- 2:06lawyer wrong in need of legal counsel
- 2:09following the bombing jewel did indeed
- 2:11turn to Bryant who at the time had a
- 2:13staff solely comprised of himself and
- 2:15his assistant Nadia light although
- 2:17Bryant was largely responsible for
- 2:19getting jewel exonerated the film leaves
- 2:21out the other lawyers who came to Jules
- 2:22aid yes their friend Mac to handle Jules
- 2:27civil suits Bryant enlisted the help
- 2:28from attorneys Elle Lynwood and Wayne
- 2:30grant while not present in the film
- 2:32wouldn't grant
- 2:33took on jewel as a libel and defamation
- 2:35client helping to file lawsuits against
- 2:37NBC CNN and Piedmont College since the
- 2:41film is more about jewels innocence it
- 2:43makes sense that the focus is kept on
- 2:44Bryant even if he wasn't the only lawyer
- 2:46who brought jewel justice was important
- 2:48for people to know the truth
- 2:50number seven jewels former boss
- 2:51suspected him of being involved right
- 2:53early in the film jewel is fired from
- 2:56his security job at Piedmont College by
- 2:58its president W ray clear seeing jewel
- 3:00on the news clear tells the authorities
- 3:02that he suspects him of being the bomber
- 3:04based on his past behavior the president
- 3:06of a college were jewel had worked
- 3:07security called the FBI to say he had
- 3:10concerns about jewel jewel did ruffle a
- 3:12lot of feathers during his time at
- 3:14Piedmont writing people up for minor
- 3:15offenses and giving out tickets on a
- 3:17highway off campus this all led clear to
- 3:20believe that jewel was involved in the
- 3:21attack thus making him the FBI's prime
- 3:23suspect you always look at the guy who
- 3:25found the bomb just like he was looking
- 3:27at a found the body
- 3:28it's also true that jewel got arrested
- 3:30for impersonating a cop while working as
- 3:32a security guard added a cab County
- 3:34apartment ironically it was jewels
- 3:36passion for law enforcement that often
- 3:38landed him in hot water I was raised to
- 3:40respect authority Authority looking at
- 3:44number six Jules mother publicly pleaded
- 3:46with President Clinton right as seen in
- 3:48the film the false accusations against
- 3:50her son took a hefty toll on Barbara
- 3:52Bobby Jewell I've carried this in my
- 3:55heart all these years and they really
- 3:59need to know on august 1st 1996 the
- 4:03Jules endured one of their hardest days
- 4:05as the FBI searched Bobby's apartment
- 4:07the feds not only went through Bobby's
- 4:09undergarments but also took away her
- 4:11Tupperware and 22 Disney video tapes
- 4:14later that month a press conference was
- 4:16held where Bobby spoke out about the
- 4:17humiliation and injustice her family had
- 4:19faced I am so very drained I do not
- 4:24think any of you can even begin to
- 4:26imagine what our lives are like Bobby
- 4:28notably referenced then President Bill
- 4:30Clinton in her emotional statement
- 4:32telling him quote you have the power to
- 4:34end this nightmare
- 4:35Bobby further pleaded quote if the FBI
- 4:38does not intend to charge my son please
- 4:40tell us please tell the world mr.
- 4:42president please clear my son's name mr.
- 4:45president number five Tom Shaw was the
- 4:52main FBI agent who held jewel wrong John
- 4:55ham stars as Tom Shaw an FBI agent
- 4:58leading the investigation against jewel
- 5:00believing him to be quote guilty as hell
- 5:03according to Deadline however quote hams
- 5:06character was reportedly an amalgamation
- 5:08of characters in Billy Ray script she
- 5:10conspired to plant a bomb in Centennial
- 5:12Park it's possible that Shaw is
- 5:14primarily supposed to represent FBI
- 5:15agent Don Johnson who grew increasingly
- 5:17suspicious of jewel is he dug deeper
- 5:19into his background Johnson received a
- 5:21five-day suspension for his part in the
- 5:23investigation against jewel the FBI also
- 5:25reprimanded David Woody Johnson the
- 5:27Atlanta Special Agent in Charge and
- 5:29David Tubbs the Kansas City special
- 5:31agent in charge
- 5:33obviously the film could not explore
- 5:34every agent who mishandled jewels case
- 5:36so it makes sense to have a compilation
- 5:38character like Shaw serve as the
- 5:40antagonist the unfortunate side of it
- 5:42was that the guy's life was completely
- 5:43ruined
- 5:44number four Joel was accused of having a
- 5:46partner in crime right in the film
- 5:48shortly before the bomb goes off an
- 5:50unseen figure calls 911
- 5:52them about the impending attack it
- 5:54eventually becomes clear to all the
- 5:56characters that jewel couldn't have made
- 5:57it from the park to the payphone in this
- 5:59limited timeframe
- 6:00the FBI's explanation is that jewel has
- 6:02an accomplice
- 6:03I'm sorry work what's more they claim
- 6:06that the person who helped jewel is his
- 6:08gay partner even though he's straight
- 6:09believe it or not the FBI did reportedly
- 6:12theorize that jewel put the bomb in the
- 6:14park while his male lover placed the 911
- 6:16call
- 6:16of course there ended up being no
- 6:18evidence backing these accusations
- 6:20although the call itself from the actual
- 6:22bomber did happen just say into his
- 6:24phone there's a bomb in Centennial Park
- 6:26you have 30 minutes number three the
- 6:32training video right in one of the
- 6:34film's most shocking sequences agents
- 6:36Tom Shaw and Dan Bennett lured jewel out
- 6:38of his mother's apartment to Atlanta's
- 6:40FBI office telling him that they want to
- 6:42shoot a training video for first
- 6:43responders so when two agents went to
- 6:45talk to jewel and he expressed concerns
- 6:47about being interviewed on videotape
- 6:49they told him it would be used in a
- 6:51training film for first responders it
- 6:53slowly becomes clear to jewel that the
- 6:54agents aren't merely filming a training
- 6:56video especially after they decide to
- 6:58read him his Miranda rights for
- 7:00authenticity jewel proceeds to call
- 7:02Bryant who tells his old friend what's
- 7:04really up and as they start the cameras
- 7:07on Richard Jewell and his eyes widen a
- 7:09little business like there's a cartoon
- 7:11character light bulb going off on top
- 7:13the one difference here is that it was
- 7:14actually agents Don Johnson and dia del
- 7:17Rosario who showed up on the jewels
- 7:18doorstep asking Richard to help them
- 7:20make a training video other than that
- 7:22the film's portrayal of this event
- 7:23trying to trick jewel into talking
- 7:25basically checks out number two how the
- 7:28newspaper journalist got her scoop wrong
- 7:30the film has attracted controversy due
- 7:33to its depiction of real-life Atlanta
- 7:35journal-constitution police reporter
- 7:36Cathy Scruggs who worked on a piece with
- 7:38fellow journalist Ron Mart's naming
- 7:40jewel as a suspect
- 7:41jewels it's the profile of the lone
- 7:43bomber a frustrated white man who is a
- 7:45police wannabe who seeks to become a
- 7:48hero played by Olivia Wilde Scruggs gets
- 7:51her information from the FBI Shaw after
- 7:53coming on to him in a bar while we don't
- 7:55see them do the deed it is strongly
- 7:57implied that Shaw gave up Intel in
- 7:59exchange for sexual favors in reality
- 8:01Scruggs his source remains unknown and
- 8:04it's been argued that she never traded
- 8:06sex for tips the FBI is looking at
- 8:08Richard Jewell since Scruggs passed away
- 8:12in 2001 at age 42 she'll never be able
- 8:15to share her thoughts on the scene in
- 8:16question according to a JC
- 8:18editor-in-chief Kevin G Reilly though
- 8:20quote there is no evidence that this
- 8:22ever happened I report the facts you've
- 8:24ruined this man's life

- 8:34occasional videos or all of them if
- 8:36you're on your phone make sure you go
- 8:38into your settings and switch on
- 8:39notifications number one jewel was never
- 8:44actually arrested and charged right
- 8:46considering the jewel was the prime
- 8:48suspect in a terrorist investigation for
- 8:50nearly three months you might assume
- 8:52that the authorities would have placed
- 8:53him under arrest
- 8:54especially given how he was being
- 8:55publicly accused in the press his
- 8:57accusers you two of the most powerful
- 8:59forces in the world the United States
- 9:01government and the media jewel was
- 9:03brought in for questioning and as
- 9:05mentioned before was even read his
- 9:07Miranda rights as we see in the film
- 9:09however joel was never officially
- 9:11arrested for the crimes the FBI
- 9:12suspected him of people to this day
- 9:14think that he was arrested he was never
- 9:17arrested he had nothing to do with it
- 9:19eventually after 88 days the US
- 9:22Department of Justice delivered a
- 9:23handwritten letter to jewel saying he
- 9:25was no longer being investigated in 2003
- 9:28law enforcement finally captured the
- 9:30real terrorist Eric Robert Rudolph who
- 9:33eventually pled guilty to the Olympic
- 9:35bombing as well as three others I can't
- 9:37help but think that if we fast forwarded
- 9:39to today that we would have had Eric
- 9:42Rudolph's face on there and we've solved
- 9:43that crime quite quickly do you agree
- 9:46with our picks check out this other
- 9:47recent clip from WatchMojo and be sure
