  4. 0:10Larson and I'm the IRC tire guy today
  5. 0:13we'll be talking the top 10 drills
  6. 0:15techniques and practices all beginners
  7. 0:18should be working on and every
  8. 0:20intermediate Rider should have mastered
  9. 0:23each one of these techniques we've done
  10. 0:25full breakdowns on that you can check
  11. 0:27out right here so let's get into it the
  12. 0:30technique I'm obviously starting with is
  13. 0:33static balance this is that basis of
  14. 0:36control in any situation building this
  15. 0:39Foundation is so important the best way
  16. 0:42to learn this technique from scratch is
  17. 0:44using a small hole for the front tire we
  18. 0:46do this to increase the contact patch of
  19. 0:48the tire itself as well as the action
  20. 0:51and reaction for correction when turning
  21. 0:53from left to right when I say correction
  22. 0:55I mean you can use your front tires
  23. 0:58movement to correct your balance when
  24. 1:01you fall to the left you turn to the
  25. 1:03left when you fall to the right you turn
  26. 1:05to the right this slight turn in each
  27. 1:07Direction allows the machine to balance
  28. 1:09back in the other direction remember
  29. 1:12coming up onto the pegs is probably the
  30. 1:15hardest part so repeating the coming up
  31. 1:17part is the most important compress your
  32. 1:20suspension lowering your center of
  33. 1:22gravity and drive through the peg slowly
  34. 1:24coming up with the muscle in your quad
  35. 1:27don't jump off the ground when in
  36. 1:29Balance make sure to use both the
  37. 1:32Turning of the front tire in the
  38. 1:33direction you are falling as well as the
  39. 1:36bar and Peg pressure in the opposite
  40. 1:39side you fall don't forget to practice
  41. 1:41this technique with the tire turned in
  42. 1:44both directions as you improve make sure
  43. 1:46to make the hole smaller and smaller
  44. 1:48deliberately making it harder and harder
  45. 1:50up next let's talk clutch control this
  46. 1:54is another fundamental practice everyone
  47. 1:56should have mastered understanding how
  48. 1:59to use your clutch to control your
  49. 2:01machine honing in your understanding of
  50. 2:04the friction zone is so important this
  51. 2:07is an awesome way to do it use using a
  52. 2:10slight incline that you are comfortable
  53. 2:12with practicing rolling up and down this
  54. 2:15incline only using your clutch no brakes
  55. 2:18often we see the bad habit of grabbing
  56. 2:20the front brake as soon as the rider
  57. 2:22begins to roll backwards it's much safer
  58. 2:24as well as more efficient to use the
  59. 2:27slip of your clutch in the friction Zone
  60. 2:29to control a slow backwards descent the
  61. 2:33focus here is a steady low throttle and
  62. 2:35RPM instead of chopping the throttle on
  63. 2:38and off we hold it steady and actuate
  64. 2:40our movement with the slip of the clutch
  65. 2:42in the friction Zone we use the slip out
  66. 2:45to move up the hill then bring it in to
  67. 2:48roll backwards avoid pulling the clutch
  68. 2:50all the way in this will cause the bike
  69. 2:52to roll back at a faster than desired
  70. 2:54Pace focus on actuating the movement in
  71. 2:57and out to control your backward speed
  72. 3:00we can also practice holding the machine
  73. 3:02in one place on the hill with only the
  74. 3:04slip of the clutch as well as
  75. 3:06transferring between rear brick and
  76. 3:08clutch without moving do don't forget if
  77. 3:11you stall the machine we need to improve
  78. 3:13and practice next we have some drills
  79. 3:16that most people have never tried or
  80. 3:19really even thought of we're practicing
  81. 3:21stepping on and off the machine from one
  82. 3:23side or the other although this seems so
  83. 3:26simple this is a great technique for
  84. 3:28understanding how your own weight can be
  85. 3:30inputted into the machine the focus here
  86. 3:33is using your outside Peg weight to
  87. 3:35prevent the machine from tipping away
  88. 3:37from you start on either side of the
  89. 3:40bike turn the front wheel away from the
  90. 3:43side you're standing with the correct
  91. 3:45foot on the peg begin a heavy outside
  92. 3:48Peg pressure as you lean the bike away
  93. 3:50from your body focusing on its own
  94. 3:52balance point you shouldn't be pulling
  95. 3:54or really holding the bars with your
  96. 3:56hands at all the goal is to input the
  97. 3:59counterweight with the foot that is on
  98. 4:00the peg Standing Tall we maximize the
  99. 4:03weight on the Peg and slowly swing our
  100. 4:06opposite leg over again we shouldn't
  101. 4:08jump off the ground with our foot it
  102. 4:10practicing on both sides as well as both
  103. 4:12stationary and riding away this is also
  104. 4:15great exposure for lack of clutch
  105. 4:16control and a great practice for jumping
  106. 4:19off the bike using only the pegs not the
  107. 4:22ground when crashing now let's talk
  108. 4:24practicing on command balance the best
  109. 4:26way to practice this control is with a
  110. 4:29slow race drill this is usually the
  111. 4:32first of one of the cone drills I like
  112. 4:34to teach this is a fun way to get in
  113. 4:36tune with the throttle clutch control
  114. 4:38and balance of your machine we set up a
  115. 4:41rectangle of cones in a flat area about
  116. 4:43four feet wide and 40 feet long the goal
  117. 4:46is to spend as much time in the
  118. 4:47rectangle as possible without of course
  119. 4:49falling out or putting our feet down now
  120. 4:52when I say on command balance the goal
  121. 4:54here is to successfully use the ability
  122. 4:56to turn to left or right to catch your
  123. 4:59balance when falling in One Direction or
  124. 5:02the other using both our balance via our
  125. 5:04body position and quick slip of the
  126. 5:06clutch we can control the movement of
  127. 5:08our machine keeping our feet on the pegs
  128. 5:11and the bike underneath us going forward
  129. 5:13here we really focus on a steady
  130. 5:16throttle and just like our clutch
  131. 5:18control drills actuating our movement
  132. 5:19with the slip of the clutch this gets
  133. 5:22you in tune with how to completely
  134. 5:25control your machine on flat ground and
  135. 5:27truly is exactly what I'm doing in
  136. 5:30technical situations next up this is a
  137. 5:33drill everyone sees and thinks I've got
  138. 5:35this all day then they never try it
  139. 5:37we're talking the cone weave spacing
  140. 5:40seven to eight cones in a straight line
  141. 5:42at about five to six feet apart or a
  142. 5:44length that you are comfortable with if
  143. 5:46you feel like you were able to do it
  144. 5:47easy tighten them up I'll tell you five
  145. 5:50feet is not easy the control we use is
  146. 5:52similar to that on command balance we've
  147. 5:54spoke about the goal is to hold a steady
  148. 5:57throttle and actuate movement with our
  149. 5:59clutch make sure to use a steady front
  150. 6:03brake control the entire time this is a
  151. 6:06great drill for learning throttle input
  152. 6:08and front brake control at the same time
  153. 6:10now as the cones get really tight we can
  154. 6:13use the additional lean angle and
  155. 6:16uncoupling from the machine to decrease
  156. 6:18our overall turning radius and complete
  157. 6:21each cone weave when turning to the left
  158. 6:24I lean the bike into my left knee and my
  159. 6:26right knee comes out for counterbalance
  160. 6:28and vice versa for when we're turning
  161. 6:31right if you don't have your static
  162. 6:33balance Master to try and hold a steady
  163. 6:36Pace to prevent fighting your own
  164. 6:37balance during each weave make sure to
  165. 6:40aim your front tire as close to the cone
  166. 6:42in front of you as possible this will
  167. 6:44assist your rear tire in clearing the
  168. 6:46cone behind you again steady pace and
  169. 6:49steady throttle actuating movement and
  170. 6:52control with your clutch don't forget to
  171. 6:54practice this one uphill downhill and
  172. 6:57side Hill for a real challenge let's
  173. 7:00talk full lock balance setting cones in
  174. 7:03a large rectangle about 50 feet by 25
  175. 7:05feet note the smaller the rectangle is
  176. 7:07the harder this drill is the the goal
  177. 7:10here is making as many 180 degree turns
  178. 7:13within this space as possible this is a
  179. 7:15great drill to practice uncoupled
  180. 7:17balanced control during each turn the
  181. 7:20front tire should be fully locked in the
  182. 7:22required direction from here we
  183. 7:24completely weight the outside Peg and
  184. 7:27lean the machine as much as possible so
  185. 7:30much so I actually removed my inside
  186. 7:32foot from the pick I focus on maximizing
  187. 7:34the lean and minimizing My overall
  188. 7:37turning radius because the speed is so
  189. 7:39slow the lean of the bike needs to be
  190. 7:41counterbalanced by my body position this
  191. 7:44is where being comfortable uncoupling as
  192. 7:47well as that outside Pig weight becomes
  193. 7:49mandatory again we use a steady front
  194. 7:52brake control with smooth throttle and
  195. 7:55we actuate our movement with our clutch
  196. 7:57control a great tip with this drill for
  197. 8:00maximizing the amount of turns you make
  198. 8:02is always have the front tire in a full
  199. 8:04lock position the less you drive
  200. 8:06straight the more turns you can make
  201. 8:08think of it like try trying to make a
  202. 8:10figure eight inside of the rectangle of
  203. 8:12course that should be impossible due to
  204. 8:15the actual size but the same overlapping
  205. 8:18turn approach should be attempted now
  206. 8:21let's talk Target fixation everyone is
  207. 8:24guilty of this at one time or another
  208. 8:26Switchback gates are a great way to
  209. 8:29expose this bad habit setting gate cones
  210. 8:31at about three feet apart and staggered
  211. 8:34in an XY Axis 10 feet down and 20 feet
  212. 8:36across repeat back and forth five times
  213. 8:39the goal is to complete full lock turns
  214. 8:42from left to right while riding between
  215. 8:44each gate without dabbing this is a
  216. 8:46great practice for presence while
  217. 8:48turning focusing on being where your
  218. 8:50tires are often we see a fixation of the
  219. 8:54cones and an over lean and dab when
  220. 8:56trying to complete a turn again we use
  221. 8:59that steady throttle and actuation of
  222. 9:01the clutch to control the machine these
  223. 9:04turns should require a full lock balance
  224. 9:06outside Peg weight and maximum lean to
  225. 9:09complete each Switchback make sure you
  226. 9:11use that overlapping figure eight
  227. 9:13turning radius rather than driving
  228. 9:15straight to the next cone don't forget
  229. 9:17that steady front brake control
  230. 9:19assisting that slow speed and minimizing
  231. 9:22your overall turning radius now this is
  232. 9:25one of the best techniques when it comes
  233. 9:27to training with cones it's called gate
  234. 9:29writing these are essentially trials
  235. 9:32practices on the big bike now not
  236. 9:34everyone has a trials bike but we can
  237. 9:37find some of the same benefits on the
  238. 9:39big bike we randomly Place three foot
  239. 9:42wide gates in a small area the goal is
  240. 9:45to ride through them all without dabbing
  241. 9:47or crossing our own track the beauty of
  242. 9:49this drill is it can be done anywhere at
  243. 9:51any time even a small Ravine can provide
  244. 9:54an extremely challenging course it's
  245. 9:57about being creative and maximizing the
  246. 9:59challenge for yourself this drill is the
  247. 10:03maximization of balanced body position
  248. 10:04throttle and clutch control as well as a
  249. 10:07complete understanding of how to make
  250. 10:09make the bike do exactly what is needed
  251. 10:12a combination of all the previous
  252. 10:14control and Cone drills we've spoke
  253. 10:16about steady throttle actuating movement
  254. 10:18with the clutch loose and flowing
  255. 10:20balance and body position this is that
  256. 10:23trials form that translates to technical
  257. 10:26writing we have to talk about one of the
  258. 10:28most important practices for technical
  259. 10:31riding getting unstuck this is a
  260. 10:34must-have drill for beginners using a
  261. 10:37slight uphill start and a small hole to
  262. 10:40put the rear tire in we first start with
  263. 10:43an understanding of momentum I always
  264. 10:45say lack of momentum exposes flaws in
  265. 10:48your Technique when the rear tire is
  266. 10:50stuck in a hole we have to find momentum
  267. 10:53however slight pulling the machine back
  268. 10:56so the front tire is just in front of
  269. 10:59the hole itself we've created an area
  270. 11:01where we can find that precious momentum
  271. 11:03with a slight load on the throttle
  272. 11:05clutch in one foot on the peg we start
  273. 11:09with the weight in our hips completely
  274. 11:11over the rear tire next we use our body
  275. 11:14position to create counteraction into
  276. 11:16the machine the steps happen quickly one
  277. 11:19two three we step onto our Peg with the
  278. 11:22foot that's on the ground drive through
  279. 11:24the pegs bringing our way from our hips
  280. 11:27forward and then release the clutch with
  281. 11:29a loaded engine creating the drive with
  282. 11:32our hips counteracts the machine and
  283. 11:34prevents a wheelie over as you become
  284. 11:37more and more comfortable with this
  285. 11:38movement increase the size of the
  286. 11:41obstacle you're practicing on finally
  287. 11:43let's talk the beginnings of the double
  288. 11:46blip wheelies pivot turns and pretty
  289. 11:49much everything Riders want to learn the
  290. 11:51clutch up the goal here is repeating
  291. 11:54this practice in succession before you
  292. 11:57even try an obstacle riding forward we
  293. 12:00hold a steady throttle with low RPMs we
  294. 12:03first focus on maximizing our front
  295. 12:05suspension compression for an efficient
  296. 12:08lift my knee move directly forward
  297. 12:10towards the radiators as I
  298. 12:13simultaneously pull in the front brake
  299. 12:15clutch and load the throttle at my front
  300. 12:19suspension compression maximum my
  301. 12:22clutches in my front brake is in and I
  302. 12:25have a loaded throttle with the rebound
  303. 12:27I drive my hips back over the rear
  304. 12:30fender and I push down through my pegs
  305. 12:32while again simultaneously releasing my
  306. 12:35front brake slipping the clutch with the
  307. 12:38loaded engine then letting the throttle
  308. 12:41off if you leave the throttle on you'll
  309. 12:43probably wheelie over the mix of
  310. 12:46suspension rebound hip weight and a
  311. 12:49loaded engine create an efficient lift
  312. 12:51that's the beginning of most techniques
  313. 12:54get this dialed and all the other
  314. 12:56techniques you want to learn will come
  315. 12:58easy those were the 10 techniques and
  316. 13:01practices I recommend everyone spend
  317. 13:03time mastering I can guarantee it will
  318. 13:06transfer into your everyday control of a
  319. 13:08machine I I hope you're enjoying the
