  1. 0:00Welcome to Hey Tablo
  2. 0:01Many of our fans have asked me to do a list
  3. 0:06like a movie list
  4. 0:07movies to watch before you turn 30
  5. 0:10movies to watch before you die
  6. 0:13or do not die until you see these movies
  7. 0:16And here's what I've decided
  8. 0:19Instead of just giving you my list
  9. 0:20because I've seen so many movies I can't just like pick 10
  10. 0:24I'm gonna go to Letterboxd and look at this list that they actually just recently put up called
  11. 0:31Movies Everyone Should Watch At Least Once During Their Lifetime
  12. 0:35and I will decide for you
  13. 0:38if these movies are seriously worth watching within your lifetime
  14. 0:43Uh and I'll pick out the ones that I really think belong on this list
  15. 0:52Okay so I'm on Letterboxd and the great thing about Letterboxd
  16. 0:57is that the reviews are sometimes better than the movies
  17. 1:01Like they are hilarious
  18. 1:03I don't know if that was the intention
  19. 1:05when this app was created
  20. 1:07but it devolved or evolved into just really hilarious like one-liner reviews
  21. 1:15So of course since I'm a movie lover
  22. 1:17I'm a movie buff I do have a Letterboxd account
  23. 1:23On this episode I will reveal my account and the reviews I have
  24. 1:29To be honest I did it for a while and then I quit
  25. 1:31'cause like I watch so many movies
  26. 1:34it's so hard for me to journal every single one and review every single one
  27. 1:38So I did it for a little while and then I quit
  28. 1:40Just because I like a movie
  29. 1:41doesn't mean you will but I mean it's Hey Tablo
  30. 1:44I get to have an opinion
  31. 1:45Okay so let's go
  32. 1:46Uh the first movies here
  33. 1:49are Psycho 2001: Space Odyssey Schindler's List Goodfellas Back to the Future
  34. 1:54Oh my God even the first line
  35. 1:57Okay it's gonna be impossible for me to pick and choose from all these movies
  36. 2:02so here's what we'll do
  37. 2:03I'm gonna focus on movies you need to watch
  38. 2:06before you hit 30 or 40
  39. 2:09if you're already like 35-
  40. 2:11okay
  41. 2:12Or 50 even
  42. 2:13but movies young people should watch
  43. 2:17before they're quote-unquote Tablo old
  44. 2:20So Psycho 2001 Schindler's List all amazing beautiful movies
  45. 2:25Goodfellas of course, but
  46. 2:27focusing on movies you should see while you're young
  47. 2:30uh I don't know if I would add those to the list
  48. 2:33So here we go
  49. 2:34I'm gonna keep going down until
  50. 2:36Okay this one this one's gotta go in the list
  51. 2:39Spirited Away
  52. 2:40Okay not only have I seen this maybe 15 times
  53. 2:46my favorite scene is when the parents turn into pigs
  54. 2:50That's such a powerful scene that like once you s- at when
  55. 2:53when I first saw it I was like "This is like a nightmare."
  56. 2:55Like I thought this was like a family movie
  57. 2:57What the hell is going on
  58. 2:58But anyways the reason why I would add this to the list
  59. 3:02is because first of all
  60. 3:04this is gonna be a weird take on the movie but like
  61. 3:07it shows great work ethic
  62. 3:10Like the work ethic of this main character right
  63. 3:15She's like trapped on this island with like spirits
  64. 3:19and you know it it's like she should be afraid
  65. 3:22and just scared and just trying to escape as soon as possible right
  66. 3:26Every single scene should have been the main character trying to escape
  67. 3:30but she puts in work
  68. 3:32Like she she like you know she's like "I'm here
  69. 3:37I might as well work hard too." You know what I mean
  70. 3:42Because in life you're not always gonna be in a situation
  71. 3:45where you want to do the work
  72. 3:47Like not every jo- most jobs are terrible
  73. 3:51You know you you have a terrible boss
  74. 3:54You know you don't really wanna be there
  75. 3:55But before you escape making the most of it
  76. 4:00I think this movie shows that
  77. 4:02I know it's a weird way to see this movie
  78. 4:04but that's what I got from it believe it or not
  79. 4:06When I first saw it
  80. 4:08Technically I was a kid too when I first saw it right
  81. 4:10I was young as hell
  82. 4:11I watched it I think with Mithra and Tukutz
  83. 4:14Tukutz walked out in the middle
  84. 4:16But Mithra and I watched the whole thing and and the thing
  85. 4:19that the only thing that was going r- like going through my head
  86. 4:22I was like "Wow that's a terrible situation to be be in
  87. 4:25It's like terrifying and sucks
  88. 4:28but she's like working hard." Let's look at some of the reviews here
  89. 4:32Okay s- Letterboxd you go for the reviews
  90. 4:36Look at this
  91. 4:37The first review: "I got lost in a department store
  92. 4:40when I was five and it felt a lot like this."
  93. 4:43Oh here's another one:
  94. 4:44"I mean probably the best movie ever made?”
  95. 4:49I love these reviews
  96. 4:51Okay
  97. 4:51Wait I'm gonna I'm gonna review it too
  98. 4:53Okay Spirited Away
  99. 4:57work ethic
  100. 5:01Okay here you go
  101. 5:02There's my review
  102. 5:03Work ethic 5 stars okay
  103. 5:06Okay let's go through some other movies
  104. 5:09I'm gonna j- they're
  105. 5:09All these movies are great by the way so you should
  106. 5:12Most of these movies on this list
  107. 5:14you should see them if you get a chance but
  108. 5:17I'm gonna just like run through them until I find movies
  109. 5:20that are perfect for young people to watch before they hit 30
  110. 5:24or young people to watch before they hit 40 or young at heart
  111. 5:28to watch before you hit 50 60 70 80 okay
  112. 5:32Fight Club Do the Right Thing all great movies
  113. 5:35Titanic
  114. 5:36Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  115. 5:38This has to go on the list
  116. 5:40I know many of you have probably seen this movie
  117. 5:43but if you haven't please do
  118. 5:44because this got me through a lot of heartbreak
  119. 5:51When you're young you're gonna have relationships that fail
  120. 5:55You're gonna go through breakups
  121. 5:56heartbreak right
  122. 5:58And this movie First makes you more depressed
  123. 6:03So if you watch this movie if you just had recently had a breakup
  124. 6:06and Tablo recommended this movie and you're watching it
  125. 6:09for the first like half you're gonna be like "f**k Tablo
  126. 6:12Why did he recommend this
  127. 6:14Because I'm feeling worse." Right
  128. 6:16But if you watch the whole thing
  129. 6:18you get like you get a full understanding of what loss is
  130. 6:22Like this this this picture basically like within like 2 hours it's surreal
  131. 6:28It's like a sci-fi at the same time
  132. 6:30while being a romantic comedy and also drama
  133. 6:34And it just somehow encapsulates like the feeling of losing someone
  134. 6:42That scene where Jim Carrey is like alone in the car
  135. 6:45and he's like crying
  136. 6:47oh my God I've used that meme so many times
  137. 6:51Not for like heartbreak reasons but I use that for like let's say
  138. 6:56like an album came out and someone's like
  139. 7:00"Mm mid." I'll respond with that meme
  140. 7:07Okay let's look at some of the reviews
  141. 7:09This movie destroyed me
  142. 7:12It somehow reminded me of a quote from Call Me By Your Name
  143. 7:16"If there is pain nurse it
  144. 7:18And if there is a flame don't snuff it out
  145. 7:20Don't be brutal with it
  146. 7:22We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster
  147. 7:26that we go bankrupt by the age of 30
  148. 7:29and have le- less..." Oh by age of 30
  149. 7:33Oh my God
  150. 7:34"And have less to offer each time we start with someone new."
  151. 7:38Call Me By Your Name also a great movie
  152. 7:40Uh I'm gonna review this as well
  153. 7:43Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  154. 7:45Uh okay
  155. 7:48I'm gonna give it 5 stars
  156. 7:49Review
  157. 8:04Forget AI I need that memory-erasing machine
  158. 8:15Okay let's go through more movies
  159. 8:18Good Will Hunting
  160. 8:21I don't wanna add it because it's so
  161. 8:24You know you would expect it on a list of movies
  162. 8:27you should see before you hit 30 40 50 or 60
  163. 8:30But do you know that my yearbook quote
  164. 8:35was the last line of this movie
  165. 8:36"I gotta go see about a girl"
  166. 8:38Okay here's the thing
  167. 8:39In the movie Matt Damon leaves a letter for Robin Williams
  168. 8:44and that's the line right
  169. 8:46That's what it says
  170. 8:47And then Robin Williams looks at it
  171. 8:48and he's like "He stole my line," right
  172. 8:51And after leaving that letter Will Hunting that character drives to Stanford
  173. 8:58That's how the movie ends right
  174. 9:00And when I was doing my yearbook quote I was headed for Stanford
  175. 9:04So I was like
  176. 9:06And also this this movie was just my favorite movie at the time
  177. 9:09The funny thing is when I wrote the quote
  178. 9:11I hadn't even seen the movie
  179. 9:13I don't think I had actually seen the movie
  180. 9:16I downloaded a screenplay
  181. 9:19There was a screenplay that came up of the movie
  182. 9:21but I was so interested in seeing it that I f-
  183. 9:25and I wa- I wanted to be a film filmmaker right
  184. 9:27I wanted to be a screenwriter as well
  185. 9:29So I downloaded the the script first
  186. 9:33and read the script so many times that
  187. 9:37And I didn't care about spoilers
  188. 9:38Like I just wanted to see
  189. 9:39how the script goes to the movie right
  190. 9:42And I loved the ending even before seeing this movie
  191. 9:46So like reading a book right
  192. 9:48And then I went to see the movie
  193. 9:49and the movie like paid off
  194. 9:52Like whatever I had imagined it did more even more right
  195. 9:55The music was so good
  196. 9:57So I'm gonna put that on the list
  197. 9:59Haru really loves this movie too
  198. 10:01You know the "It's not your fault," that line
  199. 10:05I did that on Haru once like as a joke
  200. 10:11Here's the thing like we saw this movie and some time had passed
  201. 10:15We saw it together and some time passed
  202. 10:17And Haru like had this you know thing at at school
  203. 10:20that you know she was kind of down about
  204. 10:23And when she told me
  205. 10:24I was like "It's not your fault." And
  206. 10:28she's like "Thank you Dad." And I was like "It's not your fault
  207. 10:31It's not your fault." And I did the Robin Williams thing
  208. 10:35Once she realized what I was doing
  209. 10:36she was like "Dad what the f**k?"
  210. 10:41"Not the time Dad."
  211. 10:43Okay I'm gonna review it
  212. 10:46It is my fault though
  213. 10:51Finding Nemo great movie
  214. 10:53Requiem For A Dream terrifying movie
  215. 10:56Pulp Fiction when it first came out it was crazy
  216. 11:02Kung Fu Kung Fu Panda
  217. 11:04Seriously there are basically no movies here that I haven't seen
  218. 11:07Maybe there's like 2 or 3
  219. 11:09Okay Matrix Akira
  220. 11:14Okay I'm gonna keep going
  221. 11:17Oh Up
  222. 11:18Up was so good too
  223. 11:19That opening scene- Yeah is a film in itself
  224. 11:24So like did you cry
  225. 11:25I definitely cried
  226. 11:26I cr- I cry a lot in movies though to be honest
  227. 11:30I cried during Little Mermaid
  228. 11:33The the- Not the animated one the live action one
  229. 11:36I cried when the dad lets the daughter go
  230. 11:39You know I once cried like long time ago
  231. 11:42uh we were in a car together Epik High
  232. 11:44on the way to like Busan or something I think to perform
  233. 11:48And in the in the car
  234. 11:50there was a TV thing that you could watch
  235. 11:52So we watched Spider-Man 3 the one with Tobey Maguire
  236. 11:57and it's the one where like
  237. 11:59It's it's the it's the terrible one
  238. 12:00The one where like Sandman
  239. 12:03comes out- Mm and Venom
  240. 12:04But anyways Sand- there's a scene where Sandman
  241. 12:08I think he's like he's like dying and Sandman takes out this thing
  242. 12:12and like looks at a like a picture of his kid
  243. 12:16And at the time I was a kid
  244. 12:18Like I w- I hadn't been married
  245. 12:20Like I would never imagine being a dad
  246. 12:22at that that age right
  247. 12:24But when that scene came out Mithra and I were sitting like this
  248. 12:28Tukutz was sitting in the front right
  249. 12:29So Mithra and I were watching it
  250. 12:31and that scene comes out and I go-
  251. 12:35Like this right
  252. 12:37And what's hilarious is Mithra
  253. 12:39without looking at me Mithra's like "Please don't f**king tell me
  254. 12:45that you're crying in the middle of Spider-Man 3," right
  255. 12:48I'm like "I'm not crying
  256. 12:50I'm not crying
  257. 12:51I'm just looking out the window." And he's like-
  258. 12:52"You're f**king crying during like this f**king Sandman."
  259. 12:59"Spider-Man 3 you're crying." And I'm like "I'm not crying
  260. 13:02I'm not crying
  261. 13:03Something got in my eye." so I cry a lot
  262. 13:08But anyways Up's great but I'm gonna
  263. 13:11I want this list to maybe have 10 movies okay
  264. 13:14So I'm gonna keep going
  265. 13:16Oh La La Land great movie
  266. 13:19Oh shit look at these bangers after bangers
  267. 13:22Forrest Gump Pursuit of Happiness Empire Strikes Back Terminator 2 Parasite
  268. 13:29Oh Pursuit of Happiness needs to go on this list
  269. 13:32Do any of you remember a few weeks back on Epikase
  270. 13:36we did like this life advice kind of corner
  271. 13:40And Tukutz
  272. 13:42was like "You know put your hand on your over your heart
  273. 13:46Did you really try that hard
  274. 13:48Did you really try so hard that you're you're you're you're complaining
  275. 13:53or you have burnout
  276. 13:54Did you really try that hard?" If you can say
  277. 13:58"I've worked really hard," after watching this movie respect
  278. 14:05Because this movie is the definition of somebody like f**king grinding
  279. 14:11Without giving too many spoilers this is actually a movie
  280. 14:14based on a true story
  281. 14:16and Will Smith plays the dad
  282. 14:20and it's it's it's the dad
  283. 14:24doing everything he possibly can to provide for his kid right
  284. 14:31And he goes
  285. 14:32from like having less than nothing to
  286. 14:39So in the true story he becomes this legendary investor
  287. 14:43and becomes like like multimillionaire right
  288. 14:48Or even more than that right
  289. 14:50But it it shows him going from like all these
  290. 14:53uh missteps in his life and going from like rock bottom
  291. 14:58to to this job
  292. 15:01I'm not gonna say what
  293. 15:03and I'm also not gonna reveal whether or not he gets it
  294. 15:06Although I just told you what happens in the true story
  295. 15:10but anyways there's this one scene
  296. 15:13where the dad and the kid they are evicted from their home
  297. 15:17so th- they're basically homeless right
  298. 15:20And at night they have no place to sleep
  299. 15:23So they go to the bathroom at a at
  300. 15:26at a subway station and s- the Will Smith character is holding
  301. 15:32It's his actual kid in the movie
  302. 15:34So he's holding his kid and has one leg
  303. 15:39against the doors so that no one can come in
  304. 15:41'cause he's scared someone's gonna come in right
  305. 15:43He's like in the bathroom stall basically
  306. 15:45And wow that that scene was so powerful
  307. 15:49I first saw this movie on the plane
  308. 15:51For some reason I always choose the wrong movies
  309. 15:55when I get on a plane
  310. 15:56I I started like crying
  311. 15:59Right
  312. 16:00And Mithra was sitting over there
  313. 16:05He's just like "Again?"
  314. 16:08Anyways I watched this movie again recently
  315. 16:12and let me just tell you seeing this movie before
  316. 16:15you're a dad- Mm and then watching it after you're a dad
  317. 16:19or a parent it it it is so devastating
  318. 16:25But because it's so devastating
  319. 16:28at the end the catharsis you feel it it
  320. 16:32it really makes you feel like you can do anything
  321. 16:35If you have s- someone worth doing anything
  322. 16:40for you do have the superpower to do anything right
  323. 16:46It's hard to go to those lengths
  324. 16:49because we don't h- we don't always have somebody to protect
  325. 16:53or somebody to do any- everything for right
  326. 16:57But once you have it like you'll be amazed
  327. 17:00uh at at at the at your potential
  328. 17:03Like you'll be amazed at the things you you you can do
  329. 17:06and the lengths you can go to once you
  330. 17:09once you have that somebody
  331. 17:10And it doesn't have to be a kid right
  332. 17:12It can be a friend
  333. 17:13It it can be a significant other
  334. 17:15but what I'm saying is if you have somebody
  335. 17:18that you want to like strive for right
  336. 17:23If you want to give more than you have for um
  337. 17:28you you gain those superpowers
  338. 17:30I I believe that this that's what this movie teaches
  339. 17:34And it's good to it's good to watch as a young person
  340. 17:37because e- even if you aren't thinking of getting married
  341. 17:41and becoming a dad or whatever or a mom
  342. 17:44um it puts your life into perspective a little bit
  343. 17:48Everybody you know
  344. 17:49I I don't subscribe to the idea
  345. 17:52that cert- like certain types of struggle
  346. 17:56should be compared to other types of struggle
  347. 17:58Like everyone's struggle regardless of what degree
  348. 18:01it is for that person it is a struggle
  349. 18:05So I don't-believe we should compare one person's problems to another
  350. 18:10but it does it it for me
  351. 18:13it put things into perspective
  352. 18:15I was going through multiple different things
  353. 18:17uh during the first time I saw this movie
  354. 18:20I was in my mid-20s when I first saw this movie
  355. 18:23and you know the 20s are terrible
  356. 18:27Everyone who's been through the 20s
  357. 18:28uh you you know how terrible it is right
  358. 18:31Like I wouldn't go back
  359. 18:32But it w- it was just confusing
  360. 18:35and like just you know just even when things are good
  361. 18:38there's always something going terribly wrong
  362. 18:41and this movie sort of like put things into perspective
  363. 18:44and I was like "You know the the thing that
  364. 18:47I need to overcome isn't as difficult as what this character's overcoming
  365. 18:52so maybe I c- I can do it," right
  366. 18:55Uh so this is going on the list
  367. 18:58I'm gonna give you give it a review
  368. 19:00Don't watch on a plane
  369. 19:06Okay moving on
  370. 19:08Oh shit
  371. 19:11Whiplash 1,000% needs to go
  372. 19:16Oh and I've reviewed it
  373. 19:18Okay so when I was doing Letterboxd for a while
  374. 19:22I guess I reviewed
  375. 19:23Let's see what my review was
  376. 19:24Show your activity
  377. 19:26My review was "I watch this once every 3 months
  378. 19:31basically whenever I feel lazy."
  379. 19:36This movie definitely has to be on the list okay
  380. 19:39And I guess when I reviewed it
  381. 19:41I reviewed it in February last year
  382. 19:44Oh it was February this year
  383. 19:46I guess I re-watched it that day too
  384. 19:50Sometimes when I feel lazy I don't even watch the visuals
  385. 19:55I just like leave it on as sound
  386. 19:59So the movie's about like this jazz drummer and this school
  387. 20:04like I think it's a college right like a music academy
  388. 20:07and this musician like this musician/uh instructor named Fletcher
  389. 20:13who's like the f**king devil okay
  390. 20:17Like he's the most abusive problematic human
  391. 20:23Like just the the way
  392. 20:24he berates you in to to quote unquote
  393. 20:30"push you into greatness," it it's just it's just unbelievable
  394. 20:34If you've seen this movie you know what I'm talking about
  395. 20:36But if you haven't warnings okay
  396. 20:40Like a huge warning
  397. 20:42Do not go into this if if you have problems
  398. 20:46with what a movie character says okay
  399. 20:50Because it's it goes like it goes worse than you
  400. 20:54you can possibly imagine
  401. 20:57This movie was made by the La La Land director
  402. 21:00and it was originally one of like his
  403. 21:04I think he he it it was a short film
  404. 21:05that he made as like a student maybe
  405. 21:08and then he turned the short film into a feature length
  406. 21:12And when this movie came out I identified with it
  407. 21:16uh because of 2 things
  408. 21:18One I'm a musician right
  409. 21:20I love music
  410. 21:20So when I watched the movie
  411. 21:22I identified both with the main character the young student who's
  412. 21:28in the band that this terrible teacher's you know the leader of
  413. 21:33and I also identified a little bit with Fletcher
  414. 21:37although he was just f**king batshit crazy right
  415. 21:40And the reason the reason
  416. 21:43why I identify with both characters is because as a music creator
  417. 21:48and as a musician I put myself through a lot of shit
  418. 21:52sometimes to the point of like y- like abnormal
  419. 21:58to the point of like this is just this manic right
  420. 22:01Like this manic you know fugue state of like just cr- creating
  421. 22:07And especially when I first saw
  422. 22:09the movie i- it was that it was around you know that age
  423. 22:12So I identify with somebody
  424. 22:14uh being a student of music trying to become great
  425. 22:19and also I'm a I'm the leader of Epik High right
  426. 22:24And when I was watching this movie
  427. 22:27I wa- I actually watched it I rented out a theater
  428. 22:30so that a lot of our fans can watch it together
  429. 22:33I like a whole theater right for a night
  430. 22:36And Mithra and Tukutz saw this movie too
  431. 22:38and the whole time I was looking at their reaction because
  432. 22:43I was worried that they would see me in Fletcher
  433. 22:48Because I admittedly I've been pretty hard on my members
  434. 22:53especially at the beginning of Epik High
  435. 22:55Like I wanted our team to be great
  436. 22:58Like I wanted us to be better than we actually are right
  437. 23:03And to do so I had to sometimes push my team including myself
  438. 23:09Uh I I'm I didn't just do it to them
  439. 23:11but I did it to like the 3 of us
  440. 23:14uh to push ourselves like beyond our limits right
  441. 23:19And always pushing the envelope and sometimes that required me to like
  442. 23:24you know demand things that I didn't really want to in my heart
  443. 23:27but I knew that it would get us to that next level
  444. 23:31and al- and it ultimately make our fans happy right
  445. 23:36So I was worried that they see me in that character
  446. 23:39I kept looking at them right
  447. 23:41And here's the thing
  448. 23:43They were looking at me too
  449. 23:48So this movie made me like rethink some things too
  450. 23:51Like I was like you know greatness is great
  451. 23:54Like you know being awesome
  452. 23:56and our fans being happy with you know music that's
  453. 23:59better than what what we can deliver that's that's all good
  454. 24:03But like I don't wanna be that guy right
  455. 24:07So-Uh I identified with him in some ways
  456. 24:10and also hated that I did
  457. 24:13Here's the thing that I hate to admit
  458. 24:15There's that one scene after the the
  459. 24:19the instructor does like these terrible things and then they split up basically
  460. 24:23and then they get back back together at like this jazz cafe right
  461. 24:27Chance meeting and then they sit down together
  462. 24:29And the student is supposed to hate this guy right
  463. 24:32The he- this guy basically killed him
  464. 24:35Almost killed him right
  465. 24:37But at that mo-
  466. 24:39like there's a there's a the- Fletcher says to the student
  467. 24:43"You know but I did it to make you great
  468. 24:48And who does that these days," right
  469. 24:50That's the gist of what he says
  470. 24:52He's like "Nobody strives for greatness anymore
  471. 24:54and nobody's willing to push somebody to become great
  472. 24:59And if all the greats that we love in jazz
  473. 25:02or music or arts in the arts if they weren't pushed
  474. 25:06would we have them?" That's the gist of what he says
  475. 25:09And although the way that that character did it is totally wrong right
  476. 25:15When he said it I was like "Yes."
  477. 25:20Like I could hear my inner self agreeing with him right
  478. 25:24And it's kind of sad because I'm like that to myself
  479. 25:28I'm basically Fletcher to myself and I've always been that way
  480. 25:34And when I was a kid
  481. 25:35my my parents were like that to me
  482. 25:38Um a lot of the teachers like because the the age that
  483. 25:41I grew up the time that I grew up especially like
  484. 25:45when I was really little and I was growing up in Korea
  485. 25:48yeah abuse wasn't even called abuse
  486. 25:53Like teachers would just like seriously just beat on you right
  487. 25:57So I think after that
  488. 26:00uh once it stopped like I started doing it to myself
  489. 26:03I think I've mentioned this before
  490. 26:05And I have a song called Over
  491. 26:08It's an Epik High song but it's a solo song and
  492. 26:11it's in English and the whole song is about being an overachiever
  493. 26:16Mm-hmm
  494. 26:17And I put all these emotions into that song
  495. 26:21and and I wrote that song
  496. 26:22before I think it was before I saw this movie
  497. 26:26But when I saw this movie
  498. 26:27I was like "Oh my God this is what Over was about."
  499. 26:31Okay since I've already revie- reviewed this one I'm gonna pass
  500. 26:35Punch-Drunk Love great movie
  501. 26:37Okay Dead Poets Society is su-
  502. 26:40so obviously a movie that needs to be on this list
  503. 26:43Do I need to put it in
  504. 26:44Oh it's so good though
  505. 26:46You know one of my favorite things about being a parent
  506. 26:51is that I get to re- rewatch all the movies
  507. 26:55I loved with my daughter
  508. 26:59and I know it's not that's not the case for everyone
  509. 27:01but like it just so happens that like my daughter loves films
  510. 27:06and it's n- I don't know if it was because of me
  511. 27:09but like she just she just has this distinct taste
  512. 27:13and she one day came to me
  513. 27:15and she was like "Dad have you seen Dead Poets Society?"
  514. 27:19And I was like "Of course I've seen it multiple times."
  515. 27:22And she's like "I wanna see it with you." Right
  516. 27:24And I was like "How do you know about it?" And she's like
  517. 27:26"Well you know I love movies so I always like search up
  518. 27:29like classic movies or..." I'm like "Classic movie?"
  519. 27:35"Dad have you seen John Wick 1?" "Yeah
  520. 27:38Do you wanna watch that with me
  521. 27:39I've I've always been fascinated by classic films."
  522. 27:46John Wick 1
  523. 27:47But anyways so she wanted to watch Dead Poets Society
  524. 27:50and I warned her
  525. 27:51I was like "You know it's a pretty heavy movie
  526. 27:53Uh it's a beautiful movie but it's it's it's pretty heavy,"
  527. 27:57and there's a scene in there that like really uh
  528. 28:01really f**ks me up every time I see it
  529. 28:03because you know the one character in this movie
  530. 28:05that's supposed like the dad expects him to be a doctor- Mm-hmm
  531. 28:08But he wants to do acting
  532. 28:09That whole storyline f**ked me up so bad
  533. 28:14when I was young
  534. 28:15Uh not because of me
  535. 28:17but because I saw m- my I have an older brother
  536. 28:21who's much older than me and his life was sort of like that
  537. 28:25and I had to see that as a kid right
  538. 28:28Which I think that was the reason why
  539. 28:31I I went I eventually ended up going to the arts
  540. 28:35because I s- I saw a dream crushed- Mm
  541. 28:41under the same roof and the way a dream gets crushed
  542. 28:46is like with a whimper
  543. 28:50Anyways I saw that
  544. 28:51So this w- whenever I rewatch this movie
  545. 28:55just like that whole tragic storyline is more like it
  546. 28:58just seems so personal to me
  547. 29:01and hurts me every time I see it
  548. 29:04But anyways I warned my daughter
  549. 29:06and she's like "You know I still wanna see it."
  550. 29:09And we watched it together and like I cried and she cried
  551. 29:13and then she even wrote like a like a thing about it
  552. 29:17You you guys have read it right
  553. 29:18She wrote like an essay about it and uh
  554. 29:21but she she loved the movie
  555. 29:22Like although there's a tragic s- there's multiple tragic storylines in this movie
  556. 29:28uh at the end of it it is uplifting
  557. 29:31It is uplifting
  558. 29:32Again like Good Will Hunting it it's got Robin Williams in it
  559. 29:35Uh Robin Williams such a great actor and I think I think
  560. 29:38if you watch this movie like you miss him more right
  561. 29:42So it's even more tragic
  562. 29:43And this is a weird for thing for me to throw out
  563. 29:47uh but like I was
  564. 29:49in a movie with him
  565. 29:54Um
  566. 29:56although I was in it for like a split second-
  567. 29:59I was in
  568. 30:00Believe it or not if you don't know
  569. 30:02and if you're hearing this for the first time
  570. 30:03you're gonna be like "What the f**k?" Tablo me
  571. 30:06I was in a movie called August Rush Uh
  572. 30:11and I actually shot the movie for over like over almost a week
  573. 30:15I think and I was with Robin Williams for a week
  574. 30:18Wow
  575. 30:19Uh the one scene I'm in is Robin Williams throws a knife
  576. 30:22It lands like it lands like right in front of me
  577. 30:25and I get shocked
  578. 30:29Uh I shot many more scenes
  579. 30:32but I only made it into a split second
  580. 30:35Okay
  581. 30:35So it's not
  582. 30:39It's not like I went there to shoot a split second
  583. 30:42But anyways he was so
  584. 30:43He was such a such an amazing person
  585. 30:48Like y- you know there were all these people
  586. 30:51that are shooting together and it was like an ensemble
  587. 30:54But he was
  588. 30:55He like would sit with me and like have conversations with me
  589. 30:59He he actually knew quite a bit about Korean music
  590. 31:03and he was just so so humble
  591. 31:06Like he didn't even come with like a manager or anyone
  592. 31:08He came just with a suitcase did his work
  593. 31:12He was friendly to everyone made us laugh
  594. 31:15He he was he was awesome so
  595. 31:18Anyways so I'm gonna review this
  596. 31:22Wait I haven't reviewed this
  597. 31:25I'm sure all the reviews here are like "O Captain
  598. 31:27My Captain," but let's let's see
  599. 31:29yo this comment f- I can't beat this comment
  600. 31:35Okay someone someone reviewed and this is their review: "Be right back
  601. 31:40About to carpe all the DMs."
  602. 31:47I'm about to carpe the shit out of these DMs
  603. 31:52Okay I can't beat that
  604. 31:55The brilliance
  605. 31:59How can
  606. 32:01Nowadays people are too busy carpe-ing DMs
  607. 32:10Oh
  608. 32:11Oh
  609. 32:19I didn't
  610. 32:24It's kinda hard being a Letterboxd reviewer
  611. 32:28I- It's a lot of pressure
  612. 32:30Like you're always like on the verge of becoming cheesy- Mm-hmm or cringe
  613. 32:36You have to like Oh man
  614. 32:40The carpe-ing the DMs
  615. 32:41Oh my God
  616. 32:44Okay
  617. 32:45Uh let's go see some more
  618. 32:47Totoro great movie
  619. 32:49Okay I'm not even gonna get through half of this list
  620. 32:52and I'm gonna hit 10
  621. 32:55Oh Inside Out
  622. 32:56The first Inside Out I saw this on a plane again
  623. 33:00But this time I was with Haru and my wife right
  624. 33:04And so Haru and my wife like the seats got mixed up
  625. 33:07so s- they were sitting with another person and I was sitting
  626. 33:10with two other people like towards the front of them right
  627. 33:13So they could they could see me from the back
  628. 33:16And I'm like "You know I wanna see something light,"
  629. 33:18because the last time I was on a plane
  630. 33:20I watched Pursuit of Happiness-
  631. 33:21and like you know I was crying on a plane
  632. 33:23I don't wanna be crying on a plane
  633. 33:25So I turn on Inside Out
  634. 33:26I'm like "You know seems fun
  635. 33:28It's got weird wacky characters." Turn it on
  636. 33:31You know when when I cried
  637. 33:33Didn't take me long
  638. 33:35Towards the beginning of the movie there's a scene
  639. 33:37where the the girl- the daughter plays hockey
  640. 33:41That's it
  641. 33:42She's just playing hockey
  642. 33:43So I I think it was like a montage
  643. 33:46It wasn't even like a like an like a proper scene right
  644. 33:49But I don't know
  645. 33:50I don't know what it was
  646. 33:52Right when it happened I went
  647. 33:55And as I went right over here-
  648. 33:59my wife and my daughter they saw me and they're like
  649. 34:07My daughter's just like "Look at my dad with those Pixar tears."
  650. 34:13If you put a daughter
  651. 34:15in any movie I will cry
  652. 34:20Seriously
  653. 34:21Any movie
  654. 34:22Doesn't matter if it's a horror film
  655. 34:24a comedy like a a- like an anime
  656. 34:26It doesn't matter
  657. 34:27Daughter Like like a dad
  658. 34:29and a daughter come out I just c- I just cry
  659. 34:31I I don't know what it is
  660. 34:32I just start crying
  661. 34:33I'm like "Huh." Okay
  662. 34:36Uh Inside Out I don't think I should put it on the list
  663. 34:40I'm gonna go
  664. 34:41Okay
  665. 34:42Since I'm not gonna get through the whole list I'm gonna go
  666. 34:44from the very back and move towards the middle now okay
  667. 34:49'Cause
  668. 34:50I don't wanna like I don't wanna shortchange all of these movies
  669. 34:54And I still have to reveal my-
  670. 34:57My profile right
  671. 34:59Okay I'm gonna go through them pretty fast too
  672. 35:00Okay let's see here
  673. 35:01Mummy, About Time, Ferris Bueller, great movie
  674. 35:09Interview with the Vampire is on on this list
  675. 35:12Hmm I've seen it
  676. 35:13I like- I liked the novels
  677. 35:16Uh hold on
  678. 35:18Let me see here
  679. 35:20Okay page 8 had some bangers but nothing
  680. 35:24that I would add to the list of movies you gotta see
  681. 35:26before you hit 30
  682. 35:28Uh okay
  683. 35:29Let's look at page 7
  684. 35:32A lot of bangers here as well
  685. 35:34but who put RoboCop on here
  686. 35:39I mean yeah w- okay it's like a cult classic
  687. 35:42and I loved it
  688. 35:43but I don't know if like this is the movie
  689. 35:46you gotta see like you know in your lifetime
  690. 35:50You know I do feel like this list was front-loaded
  691. 35:56Ghost Dog a great movie
  692. 35:58Oh Lady Bird was such a good movie
  693. 36:02Such a good movie but I now have to be picky
  694. 36:05because I can only add 3 more to this list
  695. 36:09I know someone's some like movie hipster
  696. 36:12is gonna be like looking at our final list
  697. 36:14and they're gonna be like "Pfft."That's
  698. 36:16that's what Tab- Tablo thinks are the 10 best movies ever made
  699. 36:20No
  700. 36:22I'm trying to just pick a list of 10 movies
  701. 36:25you should see before you're 30 before you're young
  702. 36:27Like before you get like quote-unquote "old"
  703. 36:29Okay
  704. 36:30Or 40 or 50 whatever
  705. 36:32Um have you seen this movie called Edge of 17
  706. 36:35It's good
  707. 36:36Man I've seen every movie
  708. 36:38Like indie movies
  709. 36:40Like just
  710. 36:43It's a really good movie
  711. 36:43It's about like you know you know ed- someone
  712. 36:46at the edge of 17
  713. 36:47Uh it's really good
  714. 36:49Mind you this list this list that Reddit compiled
  715. 36:53on Letterboxd it it doesn't have many many
  716. 36:58It it doesn't have many movies that I would consider movies
  717. 37:01you should see in your lifetime by the way
  718. 37:04Reddit doesn't always get things right
  719. 37:08We know that right
  720. 37:09Oh look Oldboy is on this list
  721. 37:13Uh because my wife is in it
  722. 37:15I'm gonna skip over it
  723. 37:18I don't get added because of
  724. 37:20No no no
  725. 37:20That's too that's too like biased
  726. 37:24Oh you know The 400 Blows
  727. 37:26This uh
  728. 37:27There's a movie
  729. 37:28called The 400 Blows and it was made in 1959
  730. 37:32Okay
  731. 37:33Uh François Truffaut
  732. 37:34And it it it was a movie of
  733. 37:37during the French New Wave
  734. 37:39There was a there was an era
  735. 37:40where these movie critics started making their own movies and they
  736. 37:46It was very free-flowing and they broke all the standard rules of film
  737. 37:50And this was one of my actually like one of my favorite movies
  738. 37:53uh as a kid
  739. 37:55But it might be a little too old
  740. 38:01to put on this list
  741. 38:03And also I don't want
  742. 38:05If I put this on this list people are gonna be like
  743. 38:07"Oh look at him trying to- trying to seem like he
  744. 38:11he's a cinephile."
  745. 38:14Okay I'll come back to that
  746. 38:15Um okay
  747. 38:17It's
  748. 38:17I don't think it's on this list but here are some movies
  749. 38:22that that I think should be on it
  750. 38:24I'll avoid movies that my wife was in 'cause like that's just
  751. 38:28You know it's too biased
  752. 38:30Okay this movie is not for everyone
  753. 38:33but there is a movie recently
  754. 38:35that came out in Korea called The Match
  755. 38:38It's based on a true story
  756. 38:39It's like a Go
  757. 38:40It's about a Go master
  758. 38:41Go is a huge deal in Korea
  759. 38:44Uh and if you
  760. 38:46You know to sum it up like to to like
  761. 38:48give you a clear understanding with one sentence:
  762. 38:53Do you remember the whole AlphaGo thing AI versus human
  763. 38:57The reason why they went against a Korean Go master
  764. 39:02is because that c- in Korea Go is huge
  765. 39:05and Koreans are amazing at Go right
  766. 39:08And this is the true story of like a like this master
  767. 39:13who was like just unbeatable
  768. 39:15He took on a young prodigy and y- you know the
  769. 39:20he even let him like live at his house
  770. 39:22and basically like like a like a was a father figure to him
  771. 39:25Um and it shows the the whole journey
  772. 39:30from basically the apprentice overcoming the master
  773. 39:35And the reason why I put this movie on this list is because
  774. 39:39if you watch it now while you're young you will 100%
  775. 39:44identify with the apprentice character with the young up-and-coming you know prodigy
  776. 39:50And then later on in your life
  777. 39:52if you watch it you will identify with the older master
  778. 39:56I
  779. 39:56It seems that I've already rated this movie
  780. 39:59and I only gave it 3 and a half stars right
  781. 40:01It's not like it's it's not like it's the perfect movie
  782. 40:04and there are a lot of movies like this
  783. 40:06you know with like a once boxing champion who becomes the aging champion
  784. 40:11and then like gets replaced by up-and-comer
  785. 40:14There's there's a lot of movies like this right
  786. 40:16And even The Godfather if you think about it is a story about
  787. 40:19like the Don the father who gets replaced by the son right
  788. 40:24Like the changing of generations
  789. 40:26And if you're under 30 right now you know
  790. 40:29it's not gonna seem real to you like time going by
  791. 40:33and then your y- you know your your age
  792. 40:37not not not your numerical age but like the age of you
  793. 40:42uh being overcome or overtaken by another generation right
  794. 40:48And the the feeling of a of an aging champion
  795. 40:53or an aging boxer is not something that you can imagine right now
  796. 40:57because you're you're the up-and-comer
  797. 40:59But there are certain movies like this
  798. 41:02that I would recommend seeing twice maybe once at once
  799. 41:08when you're young and then like 10 years later
  800. 41:12because you get a total- totally different reading of the movie
  801. 41:16and you will never have that experience unless you watch it now
  802. 41:22when you're young and then watch it again when you're older
  803. 41:25Uh same thing with you know Pursuit of Happiness
  804. 41:27Watch it before you get married or have a kid
  805. 41:30and watch it later when you're a parent
  806. 41:32Um you'll get a totally different reading
  807. 41:36So that's on the list
  808. 41:37Wait let me see s- what some people said in the reviews
  809. 41:41"I mean I'm pretty good at Uno but I'm not bragging."
  810. 41:48Maybe give us 2 films that are really niche
  811. 41:52Really niche you say
  812. 41:53Mm
  813. 41:54Like how niche do you want
  814. 41:56I can niche the niche
  815. 41:57Yeah
  816. 41:57Yeah
  817. 41:58Like don't make me go to my phone
  818. 42:00I mean I don't wanna like seem like I'm like bragging-
  819. 42:05You know about my taste or anything like that you know
  820. 42:08She's putting me under the pressure now
  821. 42:10Like God all these movies seem
  822. 42:14Have you seen a movie called Marvin's Room It's
  823. 42:21A pretty old movie but it's a young DiCaprio before Titanic
  824. 42:28when he was doing a lot of indie movies
  825. 42:31There's something so subtle and quiet about this movie
  826. 42:38Okay so let me just read you the synopsis
  827. 42:41It's a it's a story about the years that keep us apart
  828. 42:44and the moments that bring us together
  829. 42:46A leukemia patient attempts to end a 20-year feud with her sister
  830. 42:50to get her bone marrow
  831. 42:51It's a very quiet movie that even with DiCaprio attached
  832. 42:58could not possibly be made for theatrical release in 2026
  833. 43:04because nobody would would invest in it right
  834. 43:10Because I've mentioned this before on this podcast
  835. 43:13but unfortunately the age of subtle stories
  836. 43:18and like poignant quiet stories that are impactful to the soul
  837. 43:24uh the age of those kinds of movies like you know
  838. 43:28being in theaters is pretty much sadly over right
  839. 43:33They may go straight to like streamers
  840. 43:36but theaters don't even want them right
  841. 43:39It's just all blockbusters
  842. 43:41Or if you have a low budget
  843. 43:43like smaller fi- film it's usually horror for that reason
  844. 43:47It's hard for the theaters
  845. 43:48I I mean I understand right
  846. 43:49It's hard for people to for them
  847. 43:52to get people to the theater to sell popcorn to right
  848. 43:55So but believe it or not
  849. 43:57you know there was a there was a period of time
  850. 43:59where movies were small like indie movies even had theatrical releases
  851. 44:06They they weren't all Titanics right
  852. 44:09We had just small stories about families small stories
  853. 44:13about heartbreak small stories about you know overcoming you know loss
  854. 44:18that were in theaters and that did well
  855. 44:21And this movie is sort of like the definitive late
  856. 44:26'90s indie film and DiCaprio is amazing in this movie
  857. 44:32Everyone in this movie is amazing
  858. 44:34Um Drake has a song called Marvin's Room by the way
  859. 44:39I'm not sure if he if he i- if it was
  860. 44:42because of this movie but when I when when that song dropped
  861. 44:45I was like "Oh this guy saw Marvin's Room?"
  862. 44:48And but the song had nothing to do with it
  863. 44:49So I was like I was like "Okay what?"
  864. 44:56Okay I gotta review this though
  865. 44:57Marvin's Room
  866. 44:59Well here I'm gonna just write in Korean 마빈방
  867. 45:04마빈방
  868. 45:05Like PC bang or 노래방 but 마- 마빈방
  869. 45:11Okay
  870. 45:11I think I need to add a movie
  871. 45:15that is fitting for the times we live in
  872. 45:19There needs to be an AI movie in here right
  873. 45:23Ooh
  874. 45:23And we have multiple choices
  875. 45:25There's a movie called Ex Machina
  876. 45:26uh which is just f**king mind-blowingly good
  877. 45:30Even Terminator is basically an AI movie right
  878. 45:33About how if you give AI control over our defenses
  879. 45:41uh it will 100,000% lead
  880. 45:44to the the the end of humanity
  881. 45:49Back in those times we called that science fiction
  882. 45:52Now it's just the news
  883. 45:56But to stay within the movies
  884. 46:01to watch before you hit 30
  885. 46:03I'm gonna go to AI the movie AI by Spielberg
  886. 46:08It was originally a movie that was being developed by Stanley Kubrick
  887. 46:12Uh
  888. 46:13but after Stanley Kubrick passed away the baton was passed to Spielberg
  889. 46:18and he he completed the movie
  890. 46:21This is it's called AI
  891. 46:25It's called Artificial Intelligence and yes it's a movie
  892. 46:28based in the future with you know artificial intelligence
  893. 46:33like h- humanoid robots right that are just lifelike and just basically human
  894. 46:38Sort of like in the vein of like Blade Runner
  895. 46:40Now that I think about it
  896. 46:41so Matrix is also like an AI movie too right
  897. 46:45But while those movies like Terminator or Blade Runner like those movies
  898. 46:51kind of focus on like how AI becomes villains
  899. 46:56and like just you know completely destroys humankind
  900. 47:01AI also touches on those topics
  901. 47:04but is is at the at the heart of the movie
  902. 47:07it's a movie about a like a like a child right
  903. 47:11It's a it
  904. 47:12Okay so the at the beginning of the movie
  905. 47:14this family their son goes into a coma
  906. 47:19and likely won't wake up from it
  907. 47:22so they get a replacement for their child
  908. 47:26that is an AI that looks exactly like their child
  909. 47:28Okay there's like this service that does that right
  910. 47:31But you know and now
  911. 47:34they've adopted this AI version of their child
  912. 47:36and but the the the actual kid the biological son wakes up
  913. 47:42What do you do right
  914. 47:42So the parents abandon the AI child
  915. 47:46And it's just I can't really put into words like what
  916. 47:51this movie does but like it makes you think about humanity
  917. 47:57Uh it it at times it makes
  918. 48:00you afraid of the future and technology but at the same time
  919. 48:05it it makes you feel bad for technology you know
  920. 48:08'cause you know AI didn't want to be created right
  921. 48:14Like humans created it right
  922. 48:16And and also touches on you know the topics
  923. 48:19of like what happens when you hand over control of incredible power
  924. 48:24to to humans Right
  925. 48:25To certain humans right
  926. 48:27It when when they when they control the power to create life
  927. 48:31uh will they be responsible or will they abandon it
  928. 48:35When I watched it you know like I
  929. 48:37I I heard whispers of like my own childhood
  930. 48:41Uh a lot of times I felt very alone
  931. 48:46I was in a different country by myself
  932. 48:49as like a really small kid right
  933. 48:52Like in this movie the AI character David is 11 right
  934. 48:59And I was alone in a count- like a continent by myself
  935. 49:04Like my entire family was elsewhere uh
  936. 49:07when I was around that age
  937. 49:09So I kind of identified with the AI child at times
  938. 49:15Anyways it's it's definitely a movie you should you should see
  939. 49:18If you're gonna watch one AI movie I would recommend
  940. 49:21starting with this one because the other movies are like great
  941. 49:24but like they're like f**king terrifying
  942. 49:28And and honestly like if you watched some of the other movies
  943. 49:32you're supposed to like watch it
  944. 49:34When when we watched these movies like in the early 2000s
  945. 49:37and like the '90s like Terminator and stuff and The Matrix
  946. 49:40we were we were watching it enjoying it because it was so far-fetched
  947. 49:45Like we already knew that you know that that's it's it's possible
  948. 49:50but maybe not in our lifetimes right
  949. 49:53So we still had enough of a comfortable distance
  950. 49:57to just enjoy the movie as like a popcorn flick
  951. 50:00But if you watch Matrix now try it
  952. 50:03Try watching Matrix and Terminator 2 now
  953. 50:06It doesn't even seem like movies about the future
  954. 50:09It just seems like like imminent and y-
  955. 50:12you're like "What the f**k?" and just gives you more anxiety
  956. 50:18But Artificial Intelligence AI by Spielberg this movie was
  957. 50:22I- it's very poetic
  958. 50:23It's it's like watching a Miyazaki Hayao film you know at at times
  959. 50:28So I would recommend this one
  960. 50:30Some people don't like this movie
  961. 50:32because they they believe that if Kubrick had done it-
  962. 50:36It would be much better
  963. 50:37But but at the same time I mean
  964. 50:39I agree to an extent but like if Kubrick had done it
  965. 50:42I think it would
  966. 50:45I think it would've been amazing but also a little colder
  967. 50:50Mm
  968. 50:51Some people don't like how Spielberg is
  969. 50:55you know injects emotion into all all the movies
  970. 50:59but you know sometimes you need it
  971. 51:02Okay AI Artificial
  972. 51:03My review is
  973. 51:06"This is based on a true story right?"
  974. 51:11I'm gonna give it 4 and a half stars
  975. 51:14To wrap up the episode let's go into my account
  976. 51:19and look at some of the movies I've reviewed
  977. 51:21I
  978. 51:22I only had this profile for like a really short period
  979. 51:27I think I just made it to keep track
  980. 51:29and then like after like a week I abandoned it
  981. 51:31But The Godfather I wrote
  982. 51:34"I won't dine with someone who hasn't seen this."
  983. 51:40Uh interesting
  984. 51:41For Wicked I wrote "I honestly hate musicals
  985. 51:45and I still liked it." Ooh
  986. 51:47For Marty Supreme I wrote "The scene with the dog
  987. 51:56running through the smoke was immaculate." Sinners I wrote
  988. 52:01"I love Michael B Jordan
  989. 52:02the way he loves anime."
  990. 52:06For The Menu I wrote "I ate like three cheeseburgers after this."
  991. 52:12One Battle After Another I wrote
  992. 52:15"In life one must either have a friend like Sensei
  993. 52:19or be a friend like Sensei." Mm
  994. 52:23And the most recent movie
  995. 52:25before I reviewed the movies today I reviewed Epik High 20 the movie
  996. 52:30It was Epik High's concert movie
  997. 52:32Oh
  998. 52:32I don't
  999. 52:33I I think it
1000. 52:34I was like "What?" And then I searched
1001. 52:37and they had it on Letterboxd
  1002. 52:39So I gave it 5 stars
1003. 52:44And my review was "One of the main characters
1004. 52:48is just like me for real."
1005. 52:53I'll see you next week
