  1. 0:02there's nothing like adversity to boost
  2. 0:05ingenuity Terral proves it several times
  3. 0:08one of them in 1997 when they recycled
  4. 0:12old wings into mini wings in a desperate
  5. 0:15attempt to get more grip at high
  6. 0:17downforce tracks they were ugly but
  7. 0:20effective even through Rory random but
  8. 0:22not everyone fell under the spell and
  9. 0:25neat designer like Adrian Newey
  10. 0:26was having none of it for his elegant
  11. 0:28and clarin finally the FIA deemed them
  12. 0:31illegal to being unsafe after the 1998
  13. 0:34season when one takes into consideration
  14. 0:36the efforts that were made by a team of
  15. 0:39course it's disappointing but we were
  16. 0:41one of the peoples who've got some real
  17. 0:43advantage out of these side wings I
  18. 0:45think to be truthful about it there was
  19. 0:47a impairing a vision from a driver's
  20. 0:50point of view in terms of what he could
  21. 0:51actually see and if there is a question
  22. 0:53ever of safety you have decide on the on
  23. 0:55the safety aspect in late 2005 Renault
  24. 1:02developed a simple mechanical device
  25. 1:04fitted in the nose of the car that
  26. 1:06comprised a weight mounted in a spring
  27. 1:08they named it a tuned mass damper and it
  28. 1:12improved the car's performance by
  29. 1:13dampening out tire bouncing frequencies
  30. 1:15throughout corners and therefore keeping
  31. 1:18grip levels more consistent look how
  32. 1:20much the Ferrari vibrates over the curve
  33. 1:22and here's the Renault going completely
  34. 1:26off track as you can see the car itself
  35. 1:28would stay almost flat as the suspension
  36. 1:30absorbed the tyre bounce for 2006 and
  37. 1:34with FIA approval the French team also
  38. 1:37fitted the system in the rear of the car
  39. 1:39of course other teams tried to copy it
  40. 1:41but they didn't get nearly as much of a
  41. 1:43benefit with the use of mass dampers
  42. 1:45growing however the FIA stepped in and
  43. 1:47outlawed them completely following the
  44. 1:50summer break
  45. 1:53f1 engineers hate onboard cameras they
  46. 1:57add weight to the cars and they affect
  47. 1:59its aerodynamic efficiency because of
  48. 2:02that in 2014 redbull hid the camera in
  49. 2:05the cars nose instead of using the
  50. 2:07manometric camera mountings but as you
  51. 2:10can see actually as you can't see the
  52. 2:13change was far from seamless the rules
  53. 2:16say the mounting must not be located
  54. 2:18inside the carbon structure itself but a
  55. 2:20dream use loophole was that the camera
  56. 2:23was in fact inside the non-structural
  57. 2:25vanity panel the trick didn't work
  58. 2:27though and they had to revert to the
  59. 2:29traditional solution after five races
  60. 2:34McLaren were the adventurous ones in
  61. 2:372010 when they pioneered this snorkel
  62. 2:40baptized the f-duct it channelled
  63. 2:43airflow and allowed their car to go up
  64. 2:45to 6 miles faster on straights how the
  65. 2:48system worked was both rudimentary and
  66. 2:50clever a movable aerodynamic device
  67. 2:52wouldn't have passed the FIA regulations
  68. 2:54but the f-duct found its way around the
  69. 2:57rules it was up to the driver to
  70. 3:00activate the gadget covering a hole in
  71. 3:02the cockpit with his left leg soon many
  72. 3:05teams copied the idea but a few went too
  73. 3:08far
  74. 3:08Ferrari opened the Pandora's box when
  75. 3:11everyone saw Fernando Alonso driving
  76. 3:13one-handed at the Spanish Grand Prix
  77. 3:15when he operates your f-duct with his
  78. 3:17left hand changes the brake balance with
  79. 3:19his right hand
  80. 3:20how's he steering I don't think we're
  81. 3:23there we were the feet that but they
  82. 3:25should steer with their with the hand
  83. 3:26that is available but he doesn't have a
  84. 3:28hand available I don't know maybe the
  85. 3:30carries is too good of that I don't know
  86. 3:33but I can drive it so and now I would
  87. 3:35love to be no no let's say that is
  88. 3:37really good driving on that nothing to
  89. 3:39say it emerged that their system
  90. 3:41required the driver to cover a hole with
  91. 3:43his hand and Ferrari weren't the only
  92. 3:46ones and thus teams agreed to bandy
  93. 3:48f-duct both the safety and cost issues
  94. 3:51ahead of the 2011 season
  95. 3:56this journey through Formula One's
  96. 3:58astuteness couldn't overlook MacLaren's
  97. 4:01famous rear brake pedal it was f1
  98. 4:03photographer Darren Heath who smartly
  99. 4:06discovered MacLaren's trick having a
  100. 4:08hunch of what he might find he sneaked
  101. 4:10his camera inside maker Hawkins retired
  102. 4:12car at the 1997 Luxembourg ROM Prix
  103. 4:16revealing their hidden innovation the
  104. 4:19third pedal allowed the driver to
  105. 4:21control the rear braking of the car
  106. 4:22independently and substantially improved
  107. 4:25performance by reducing either
  108. 4:26understeer or wheel spin stewards
  109. 4:29initially deemed the system is legal but
  110. 4:31after Ferrari complaints in early 1998
  111. 4:33it was finally banned we were fortunate
  112. 4:37in being the first of the three teams
  113. 4:39running the system find a performance
  114. 4:41advantage within the regulations and
  115. 4:43that the only response that a rival team
  116. 4:46has is to try and find a way to have it
  117. 4:48banned as opposed to rising to the
  118. 4:50technical challenge ground effect made
  119. 4:54incredible speed and downforce possible
  120. 4:57by sucking the cars to the ground
  121. 4:59Adam skirts of the bodywork was a way of
  122. 5:01achieving this so airflow would get
  123. 5:03trapped under the car and suck it to the
  124. 5:06asphalt the benefits of ground effect
  125. 5:08was so massive that every attempt at
  126. 5:10banning it brought a bigger effort by
  127. 5:12the teams to find their way around it
  128. 5:15especially the one made by Lotus genius
  129. 5:18designer Colin Chapman who'd brought
  130. 5:20ground-effect of Formula One in the
  131. 5:22first place
  132. 5:26effect that air has when it flows over
  133. 5:28the car and we've been trying to do our
  134. 5:29best to stop it flow under it we're
  135. 5:32really trying to do is to promote air
  136. 5:33flow under the car in order to be able
  137. 5:36to contour the underside of the car so
  138. 5:38it produces a negative lift in other
  139. 5:40words the air passing under the car
  140. 5:43helps to hold it on the road the risk of
  141. 5:46the cars taking off was high so skirts
  142. 5:48were banned for the 1981 season teams
  143. 5:51quickly reacted and Llosa's his solution
  144. 5:53was the Lotus 88 a car with two chassis
  145. 5:57the upper one was able to adapt its
  146. 5:59height exploiting ground effect at high
  147. 6:02speeds but still respecting the ground
  148. 6:04clearance rule when the car was stopped
  149. 6:06while the bottom chassis was still and
  150. 6:09shielded the driver against the
  151. 6:10ferocious forces of conventional ground
  152. 6:12effect cars teams however quickly
  153. 6:15protested against it arguing that while
  154. 6:18it shouldn't be illegal they would all
  155. 6:20have to deploy one and the costs would
  156. 6:22be massive
  157. 6:23the governing body listened and the
  158. 6:25Lotus 88 died despite all of Colin
  159. 6:28Chapman's efforts in court in 2009
  160. 6:35massive rule changes reduced downforce
  161. 6:37by 50 percent so teams had to be extra
  162. 6:40creative to get some of it back and it
  163. 6:42was brawn GP who made the most of it
  164. 6:45this was a traditional diffuser and this
  165. 6:49is the one Braun used double diffusers
  166. 6:52had a different central channel using
  167. 6:54its shape to create a double-decker
  168. 6:56design dare defuses controversial aspect
  169. 6:59was the hole in the rear which increased
  170. 7:01the airflow speed and as a consequence
  171. 7:03generated more downforce the double
  172. 7:06diffuser remained legal and was a key
  173. 7:09part of the car that would go on to win
  174. 7:11both 2009 championships before being
  175. 7:15banned
  176. 7:16[Music]
  177. 7:19in 1982 three British team Lotus
  178. 7:22Williams and Brabham couldn't keep pace
  179. 7:24with the turbo cars at the front and so
  180. 7:26found an ingenious way of racing their
  181. 7:29cars below the minimum weight limit they
  182. 7:32did this by emptying their reserved
  183. 7:34water tanks mainly used for brake cooler
  184. 7:36before the race began and making sure it
  185. 7:39was topped up again before scrutineers
  186. 7:41inspected it afterwards
  187. 7:42Nelson Piquet won his home race as a
  188. 7:44result but both he and second-place Kok
  189. 7:47Rosberg were disqualified and the tactic
  190. 7:50though technically legal was immediately
  191. 7:52outlawed two years later it was terrell
  192. 7:55who used an even more flagrant trick
  193. 7:57they not only ran underweight cars
  194. 7:59emptying their water tanks but topped
  195. 8:01them up and before the end of the race
  196. 8:03with an additional two gallons of water
  197. 8:05mixed with 140 pounds of lead shot when
  198. 8:11the stewards discovered this the team
  199. 8:13was disqualified from the entire 1984
  200. 8:16championship
  201. 8:19first introduced in 1976
  202. 8:22Turrell's six-wheeled p34 showed
  203. 8:25potential right away getting its only
  204. 8:27win at the swedish grand prix in and
  205. 8:33after poor results in 1977 tyrell
  206. 8:37discontinued Essex wheeler but the
  207. 8:39concept didn't die three other teams
  208. 8:41would develop it March design never made
  209. 8:44it to a Grand Prix and the same happened
  210. 8:46to Ferraris 312 T six the idea then
  211. 8:50hibernated until 1982 when Williams
  212. 8:53tested another promising six wheeler it
  213. 8:55didn't only provide more grip but also
  214. 8:58extracted more potential of ground
  215. 9:00effect with longer skirts that extended
  216. 9:03the bodywork closer to the ground
  217. 9:05unfortunately for Williams both ground
  218. 9:07effect and four-wheel drive were banned
  219. 9:09for the 1983 season and all those
  220. 9:12promising designs went straight into the
  221. 9:14skip
  222. 9:15[Music]
  223. 9:17the same fate would befall the
  224. 9:19short-lived Brabham bt 46 be better
  225. 9:23known as the fan car created by genius
  226. 9:27designer gordon murray in 1978 it won
  227. 9:29the only Grand Prix had ever raced in
  228. 9:32Sweden with Niki Lauda at the wheel the
  229. 9:35fan was a fresh way of making the most
  230. 9:37of ground effect and Colin Chapman of
  231. 9:38course wasn't very happy rivals were
  232. 9:42both impressed and outraged questioning
  233. 9:46its legality right away after just one
  234. 9:48race political pressure killed the fan
  235. 9:50car for good clever and cheeky solutions
  236. 9:54have come and gone through the years but
  237. 9:56they will always be part of Formula
  238. 9:58One's identity
