- 3:312001.
- 3:33a young man not even 30 years of age
- 3:35named Scott Ponder decided to start up
- 3:38his own business
- 3:40Scott was a very passionate motorcycle
- 3:42enthusiast
- 3:44so he took his love and knowledge of
- 3:46motorcycles and decided to open up a
- 3:49motorcycle and power sports dealership
- 3:51called Superbike Motorsports in Chesney
- 3:54South Carolina
- 3:56Scott's best friend Brian Lucas was
- 3:58hired as the first employee of Superbike
- 4:01Brian shared the same enthusiasm for all
- 4:04things two-wheeled and Brian had the
- 4:06skills to service and repair motorbikes
- 4:10so Brian became the Shop's service
- 4:12manager
- 4:13the store became a quick success
- 4:17Scott used the internet to increase his
- 4:20customer base and boost sales and
- 4:22Superbikes saw more than one million in
- 4:24sales in the store's first year
- 4:29Scott's mom Beverly guy became a helpful
- 4:31hand at her son's business
- 4:33often times she would run errands for
- 4:35her son's store and Scott enjoyed having
- 4:38her around the shop so he hired her as
- 4:40the company's bookkeeper
- 4:43in 2002 the business saw continued
- 4:46success
- 4:47in 2003 a superbike's business increased
- 4:51so would the employee roster
- 4:53Scott and Brian hired a skilled young
- 4:55man named Chris Schubert to be a
- 4:57mechanic
- 5:00Superbike Motorsports really had become
- 5:02the place to go for all things
- 5:03Motorsports
- 5:05so people would go into the store to
- 5:07make purchases seek expert advice or
- 5:10sometimes just hang out and talk shop
- 5:14on Thursday November 6 2003 Noel Lee a
- 5:19regular at Superbike and close friend of
- 5:21Scott Ponders called the store at 2 30
- 5:24pm to tell Ponder's mother Beverly that
- 5:27he was coming there to drop off some
- 5:29tickets to a motorcycle race that would
- 5:31be held the next night at the Buy Low
- 5:33Center
- 5:34no plan to go with Ponder and Lucas
- 5:37Beverly told Noel that they would be at
- 5:39the shop and to go ahead and drop in
- 5:42Noel took a shower and then left his
- 5:44house and he arrived at Superbike around
- 5:473 pm
- 5:48Noel pulled into the parking lot and he
- 5:51saw his friend Brian Lucas lying face up
- 5:53in the front entrance of the shop
- 5:56Knoll parked his BMW next to Beverly's
- 5:59car
- 6:00when he got out of his vehicle he
- 6:01noticed Scott Ponder's body
- 6:04Scott's body was in a puddle of blood
- 6:06his head on the pavement his body
- 6:09partially on the concrete sidewalk and
- 6:12partially under his mother's car Brian
- 6:14Lucas's body was propping the shattered
- 6:16glass door open Knoll stepped over his
- 6:19friend's body and ran inside the shop
- 6:21and over to the telephone on the parts
- 6:24counter
- 6:25he called 9-1-1
- 6:28at the same time Knoll is yelling to
- 6:30Brian and Scott telling them that he was
- 6:32getting them some help
- 6:34while Noel was on the phone with the 911
- 6:37operator he saw Scott's mother Beverly
- 6:40she was laying on the floor just outside
- 6:43the bathroom of the large showroom
- 6:46which was located in the middle of the
- 6:48Superbike store
- 6:50she was not moving and there was blood
- 6:52around her
- 6:54Knoll told the operator that there
- 6:56should be a fourth person Chris Sherbert
- 6:59somewhere in the store
- 7:01but he was advised not to go wandering
- 7:04around the store the operator told Noel
- 7:06for his own safety he needed to go
- 7:09outside
- 7:11the police and paramedics are on their
- 7:13way to Superbike and you need to get out
- 7:15of the store
- 7:18the minutes he waited outside were long
- 7:20ones as help arrived Lee sat across the
- 7:23street in the grass trying to convince
- 7:25himself that everything he had just
- 7:27experienced was not real and that his
- 7:30friends were still alive
- 7:32when paramedics and police arrived they
- 7:35found Scott Bryan and Beverly
- 7:37all were dead upon arrival
- 7:40they found Chris sherberg in the very
- 7:42back of the store he had been shot once
- 7:45in the head and was slumped over a
- 7:47motorcycle that he had been working on
- 7:50in that short time between the time null
- 7:53had called the store and arrived at the
- 7:56store all hell had broken loose because
- 7:59sometime between 2 30 pm and 3 P.M on
- 8:03that Thursday in November
- 8:04someone had walked into the superbike
- 8:07Motorsports store and shot the owner his
- 8:10mother and both employees in the head
- 8:21this is true crime garage
- 8:25foreign
- 8:29[Music]
- 8:51the crime became known as the super bike
- 8:54murders and it seemed as senseless as it
- 8:57was cold-blooded
- 8:59nothing was taken from the store this
- 9:01was not a robbery in fact an envelope of
- 9:04cash was lying it was left lying in
- 9:07plain sight police searched for leads
- 9:10and they pursued a variety of theories
- 9:12Sheriff Bill Coffey and his
- 9:15investigators they interviewed dozens of
- 9:17people and they followed dozens of tips
- 9:20within the weeks that followed but
- 9:22before we get into some of those leads
- 9:24Captain I want to talk about a few
- 9:26strange things here that that were right
- 9:28out of the gate with this case so just
- 9:31days after the superbike murders law
- 9:34enforcement they're on record stating
- 9:36that there were some similarities to
- 9:38another crime that had occurred that
- 9:40same year this is the May 2003 triple
- 9:44homicide that took place at Blue Ridge
- 9:47Savings Bank both locations were
- 9:51somewhat isolated
- 9:52and the the investigators thought that
- 9:55the attacks did not appear to be random
- 9:58now both of these attacks involve some
- 10:01execution-style shootings which resulted
- 10:03in multiple homicides so they're stating
- 10:06that we're seeing some similarities here
- 10:08as to what we saw with the superbike
- 10:11murders
- 10:12now at this Bank uh in May of 2003 at
- 10:15the Blue Ridge Bank the bank teller
- 10:18Sylvia hozclaw she was killed along with
- 10:22two customers James and Margaret Burns
- 10:24were both killed in that incident the
- 10:27thing that seems strange to me Captain
- 10:28is that they come out right at the gate
- 10:30saying that we think that there's some
- 10:32similarities here the big problem for me
- 10:35is immediately there's one very
- 10:38different issue is that the bank that
- 10:42absolutely was a robbery right it was a
- 10:45takeover yeah and the the super bike
- 10:47situation we we see money left in plain
- 10:50sight and this was a very successful
- 10:53business this Superbike Motorsports and
- 10:55think about it they're selling High
- 10:57ticket items you know motorcycles are
- 10:59not cheap you know you don't just walk
- 11:01in there and pay 50 bucks and walk out
- 11:02of there with a motorcycle that'd be
- 11:04awesome if you did I would have I would
- 11:07have at least three
- 11:10but another strange thing in this camp
- 11:12that I find to be very strange is that
- 11:15Scott Ponder he's the uh young man that
- 11:18owned the super bike store he's the son
- 11:21of William Dean Ponder and now William
- 11:24Dean Ponder is a man that went missing
- 11:2613 years before Scott was killed at his
- 11:29store now there's no evidence to suggest
- 11:32that these cases are anyway connected at
- 11:35all according to uh investigators but
- 11:39just to give you a quick rundown of that
- 11:41scenario of of his father's situation
- 11:45that was way back in August of 1993
- 11:48where William Dean Ponder spent the
- 11:51evening with friends at a place called
- 11:53Jay's Tavern this was pretty close to
- 11:55his home his friends stated that they
- 11:57dropped him off at the Martin feed mill
- 12:00at the intersection of Paris Bridge Road
- 12:03and Martin Camp Road now the man was
- 12:06never seen or heard from again
- 12:08William's father was the one that
- 12:10reported him missing uh reported him
- 12:13missing on September 2nd now William I
- 12:15guess had a criminal record which dated
- 12:17back to 1976 and included charges for
- 12:21drug and alcohol offenses property
- 12:24crimes and weapons violations well it's
- 12:27possible that the law enforcement knew
- 12:29more about money possibly and so maybe
- 12:32when they say it's similar to the bank
- 12:34takeover is there some kind of money
- 12:37that was taken that they didn't know
- 12:38about or was the attacker for forced to
- 12:41flee the building before he could he or
- 12:44she or they could make off with whatever
- 12:46they intended to to get from the store
- 12:48right
- 12:50um regarding his father William was
- 12:53released from prison just two months
- 12:55before his disappearance and I guess
- 12:57Foul Play is a strong suspicion in that
- 13:01case because in 2006 a former
- 13:03acquaintance of Williams told police
- 13:06that William had in fact been murdered
- 13:09he has been declared legally dead but
- 13:12his remains to this date have never been
- 13:15found I wanted to make sure that we
- 13:17brought that up because that is a
- 13:18strange thing that that you find when
- 13:20you first start looking at these
- 13:21Superbike murders you're like wait a
- 13:23second oh my God this guy's father has
- 13:26disappeared you almost feel like there's
- 13:28something somebody uh working and
- 13:31plotting against the family but as we
- 13:33said investigators state that they don't
- 13:35see any connection between the two
- 13:38crimes now back to the leads that we
- 13:40discussed now Scott Ponder was a bright
- 13:43young businessman we said that his young
- 13:45business was was very successful over a
- 13:48million dollars in sales its first year
- 13:50so of course Superbike Motorsports was
- 13:52located on a road and situated in town
- 13:55where a lot of vehicles are going to
- 13:57drive past this business during the
- 14:00course of of a daily you know everyone's
- 14:02daily routines so the first leads by law
- 14:05enforcement were that there was three
- 14:07cars that were seen at Super bikes that
- 14:09day and the sheriff's department they
- 14:11started working with a Graphics Company
- 14:13to draw up computerized Composites of
- 14:16the vehicles that were seen at the shop
- 14:17on that fateful day now the vehicles
- 14:20that were seen at the shop earlier in
- 14:22the day are described as follows the
- 14:24first was was believed to possibly be an
- 14:27early 90s small red Chevy Cavalier or
- 14:31possibly a Honda Civic with a boxy rear
- 14:35and then the other vehicle seen was a
- 14:38late model Chevrolet
- 14:39Z71 pick pickup truck
- 14:42described as a medium blue with factory
- 14:45wheels and chrome exhaust and chrome bed
- 14:48rails and here's a very good detailed
- 14:51item regarding the truck the truck had a
- 14:5345 Day South Carolina tag on the back
- 14:57now when the sheriff released this
- 15:00information to the public he was smart
- 15:03to remind all of us that you know
- 15:05someone with a truck matching this
- 15:07description or if you see one call it in
- 15:10do not dismiss a truck of this
- 15:12description simply because it no longer
- 15:14has the 45-day tag on the back those
- 15:17things expire and could be switched out
- 15:20it really at any time now the Third
- 15:22vehicle Captain was a sporty small light
- 15:25blue pickup truck make and model unknown
- 15:29there was another lead and this lead was
- 15:32a man and a woman were seen near the
- 15:34dealership around the time of the
- 15:36murders and then shortly again after the
- 15:39murders both were known drug users with
- 15:42Shady reputations it took some time but
- 15:45police were able to track these two down
- 15:47and it turns out that the lead fizzled
- 15:49out pretty quickly they were cleared of
- 15:51having any involvement plus you have to
- 15:55wonder too if two addicts were went into
- 15:58this place looking for money committed
- 16:00the crime why did they leave such a
- 16:01large amount of cash behind and not take
- 16:03anything
- 16:04now in the weeks that followed the
- 16:06massacre Noel Lee remember he's the man
- 16:08that that arrived at Superbike store
- 16:10only to find his friends had been killed
- 16:13well he says that he didn't have time to
- 16:15grieve for his friends instead he found
- 16:17himself under the scrutinizing eye of
- 16:20homicide detectives well he was the last
- 16:23one to call the shop he found them and
- 16:26he has no alibi before that time that he
- 16:29showed up to the shop yeah and I guess
- 16:31technically you know we're we're going
- 16:33off of what he says he found and so
- 16:36technically he has no alibi for his time
- 16:38at the shop as well one thing that's
- 16:40very strange with this guy
- 16:43um is he had a cell phone on him and
- 16:46that that called into question a lot of
- 16:48his actions because police were
- 16:50immediately like well if you saw your
- 16:52two friends murdered right out in front
- 16:54of the shop the danger could still be in
- 16:57the shop the killer could still be in
- 16:59there right why would you why would you
- 17:03practically leap over the body body of
- 17:05your friend run into the store and use
- 17:08the store's phone to call 9-1-1
- 17:10now he stated simply this that when he
- 17:14saw his friends killed in the parking
- 17:16lot he just kind of forgot like you know
- 17:19what I mean like nothing really made
- 17:20sense to him he kind of forgot
- 17:21everything he was I think he immediately
- 17:23went into shock and just kind of went on
- 17:25instincts at that point well fight or
- 17:28flight right and he he for some whatever
- 17:31reason just kind of shot into the store
- 17:33and picked up the phone of the store but
- 17:36at least he called 9-1-1 the tricky
- 17:38thing too is that he tells the 9-1-1
- 17:40operator after he sees you know he
- 17:43didn't see Beverly guy killed until he
- 17:46was on the phone with the operator
- 17:48and at some point well he didn't see her
- 17:50dead right
- 17:51and at some point he tells the operator
- 17:54this and then says you know there should
- 17:56be a fourth person in the building the
- 17:59operator tells him well you need to get
- 18:01out of the building to which he does you
- 18:03know he follows the direction of the
- 18:05operator again because he was in shock
- 18:07now somebody's telling him hey you
- 18:09probably should be outside and he's like
- 18:11oh yeah and I think that probably makes
- 18:13more sense I think that the
- 18:15investigators found it pretty curious
- 18:16that he happened to know that there were
- 18:19four people in the store and four people
- 18:21were ultimately found dead there but
- 18:23like we said he was a regular he he was
- 18:26good friends with Brian good friends
- 18:28with Scott and he would have known what
- 18:31was going on at the store he would have
- 18:32had a good idea hey there's any time the
- 18:35stores open there's four people here
- 18:36right when it's like back in the day
- 18:38when I talked guitar lessons I mean
- 18:40people would come into the store they
- 18:41would never see me there I was in the
- 18:43back room teaching guitar lessons but
- 18:46regular customers that came in once a
- 18:49week or twice a week they knew what days
- 18:51I was there on so if something happened
- 18:53at the store they'd easily be able to
- 18:55say there was probably a teacher in the
- 18:57back you know I know he's there you know
- 18:59Monday through Thursday or whatever so
- 19:02the the fact that they find that
- 19:04suspicious I mean this guy is dropping
- 19:06off tickets to them
- 19:08you see what I mean like it seems like
- 19:10he has a closer relationship than just
- 19:12customer
- 19:13um store relationship well I'm glad you
- 19:17bring that up because I don't know that
- 19:18everybody will fully identify with how
- 19:22these kind of stores run you know so
- 19:24this whole this this whole business is
- 19:26based off of a hobby and some people
- 19:29people that are into Motorsports people
- 19:30that are into guitars and music right
- 19:33they're usually pretty hardcore about
- 19:35those Hobbies so those are serious
- 19:37time-consuming hobbies that are
- 19:39expensive expensive as well and you know
- 19:41this from working at the guitar store
- 19:43that people sometimes would drop in just
- 19:46to kill time oh yeah we had regular
- 19:48customers that would probably show up
- 19:50like I said once or twice a week and
- 19:53then sometimes they're not there to buy
- 19:54anything sometimes it's just part of
- 19:56their routine it's become part of their
- 19:58weekly deal where they're like I got an
- 20:00extra hour and a half I'm gonna drop by
- 20:02this the guitar shop see if they got
- 20:03anything new in see what see what the
- 20:05captain's up to you know just kind of
- 20:07shoot the [ __ ] so to speak is what a lot
- 20:09of them do come in and talk shop yeah
- 20:11and then if you didn't see them for a
- 20:13couple weeks when they came in the first
- 20:14thing you said Is Where Have You Been
- 20:16yeah oh you know I just got busy and
- 20:19they'd always say but every week if they
- 20:21came and uh if they came in on a Monday
- 20:22they'd say hey got anything new in they
- 20:25came in two days later you got anything
- 20:27new in and that was just but half the
- 20:29time you won't even talk about guitar
- 20:30you should just kind of talk about life
- 20:32or whatever it was like hanging out with
- 20:34your music buddies well Noel Lee the man
- 20:37that arrived at the super bike to find
- 20:38his friends murdered they fingerprinted
- 20:41him they dusted his car he submitted to
- 20:44a lie detector test he sat through hours
- 20:47and hours and hours of questioning and
- 20:50it took quite a bit of time and quite a
- 20:51bit of work on law enforcement's part
- 20:54but at some point law enforcement they
- 20:56say that Noel Lee he was eventually
- 20:58cleared by the police I don't know the
- 21:01details of them clearing him but that's
- 21:03their statement to the public this guy
- 21:05didn't have anything to do with the
- 21:07murders of these four people
- 21:08now this is tragic of course these four
- 21:11good people they are killed and as I
- 21:14said before
- 21:15I understand why he was a suspect in
- 21:18fact I I would have some strong thoughts
- 21:20about his story as well I have read and
- 21:23seen many interviews with this guy
- 21:24though captain and and I hope Noel has
- 21:27fully recovered from this by this point
- 21:29in time but there is no doubt in my mind
- 21:32if you see this guy in interviews and
- 21:34you read his words this guy suffered
- 21:37from some serious PTSD from from this
- 21:41incident yeah well these these were his
- 21:42friends yeah you know so like I said he
- 21:45was stopping by to drop off tickets to
- 21:48event I mean like I said that goes
- 21:50beyond customer store relationship this
- 21:53was their friend and yes you have to
- 21:56look at him because he is the one that
- 21:57found them but I don't think his story
- 22:00is odd I don't think his story is so odd
- 22:03that makes you have to look at him I
- 22:04think you just have to look at him
- 22:05because he was the one that was there
- 22:07and found them and called 9-1-1 and you
- 22:10have to at least rule him out or in as a
- 22:13suspect now it took more than a month
- 22:16for detectives to track down a very
- 22:18important witness but they were able to
- 22:20interview possibly the last person other
- 22:23than the killer or Killers to see the
- 22:26four victims alive this was a customer
- 22:28who was in the shop just minutes before
- 22:30the shooting this is a man by the name
- 22:33of Kelly Sisk this witness told the
- 22:36sheriff's department that he saw a man
- 22:38in the dealership when he was in there
- 22:39and he recalled how the unknown man in
- 22:43the shop had inquired about a specific
- 22:45motorcycle and spoke as if he had little
- 22:48to no knowledge about bikes
- 22:51so much so that the so much so that the
- 22:54customer found this guy's Behavior to be
- 22:57strange and off-putting like to the
- 22:59point where even it
- 23:01even if nothing else would have happened
- 23:03that day he made a mental note of this
- 23:05dude because the conversation was weird
- 23:07now Kelly Sisk was in there simply to
- 23:10pay a payment his son had some type of I
- 23:14don't know if it was like an ATV or a
- 23:15quad or something like that but he had
- 23:17some kind of recreational vehicle that
- 23:18they had purchased there and he said you
- 23:20know once once a month I would drop by
- 23:22and make a payment on that
- 23:24but I would also you know if I went in
- 23:26to make a payment I would be in there
- 23:27for a half an hour to 45 minutes because
- 23:29I'm looking at the bikes I'm talking
- 23:31shop this guy comes in he's talking
- 23:33doesn't know what he's talking about
- 23:35and then I leave
- 23:38and then the place is shot up later
- 23:40right the weird thing too is they
- 23:42brought Kelly
- 23:44back to the dealership after the murders
- 23:48took place and I don't know how many
- 23:49days afterwards this was
- 23:51but they were walking him through the
- 23:55store and they wanted him to point out
- 23:57anything to them that that looked
- 24:00different
- 24:01then when he was last in the store what
- 24:04what was different about this store from
- 24:05the time that you left to now after
- 24:08these murders have happened
- 24:10and he stated he told the detectives
- 24:12that you know the bike that that guy was
- 24:14talking to the store owner about it was
- 24:18a black motorcycle he said
- 24:21he found when they walked him through it
- 24:23he they found that bike in the back of
- 24:25the store he said no when I was in here
- 24:28this guy was talking to him about this
- 24:30bike and it was in the showroom
- 24:32so sometime between Kelly Sisk leaving
- 24:34the store that bike had made its way
- 24:37from the showroom to the back of the
- 24:39store so I think this shows us that
- 24:41we're working with a pretty good lead a
- 24:43really good tip here and this produced a
- 24:45description and a sketch of this
- 24:47off-putting man the description was a of
- 24:50a white man 25 to 40 years of age
- 24:53approximately six foot tall 175 to 200
- 24:57pounds with dark brown feathered hair
- 25:00let's get right back to this after this
- 25:02quick beer break
- 25:03[Music]
- 25:12thank you
- 25:20[Music]
- 25:23all right we're back Cheers Cheers now
- 25:27as one would expect the detectives
- 25:28looked into the lives of the victims to
- 25:31try to find a reason someone would want
- 25:33to kill them Brian Scott and Beverly did
- 25:37not seem to have any bad blood between
- 25:39them or anyone else now of course police
- 25:42always examine the victim's families as
- 25:45well and close friends and Melissa
- 25:47Ponder this is Scott's wife she would be
- 25:49no exception so of course she is called
- 25:52into the station on several occasions in
- 25:55the months that followed the murders
- 25:56during one visit to the police station
- 25:59Melissa changed her baby's diaper during
- 26:02this visit the police unbeknownst to
- 26:05Melissa kept the diaper and after
- 26:07Melissa you know after Melissa had
- 26:09thrown it away They confiscated this
- 26:11thing okay so this diapers taken by the
- 26:14police and it's later sent to to a lab
- 26:17to test the DNA DNA samples had been
- 26:20collected from all four victims at the
- 26:23murder scene upon running the sample
- 26:26from the diaper against that of samples
- 26:28collected at the Superbike store right
- 26:31police determined that Scott was not
- 26:33actually the father of this baby what in
- 26:37fact the test results said that Brian
- 26:39Scott's close friend and employee was
- 26:42the baby's father so this is a huge
- 26:46issue for any number of reasons not to
- 26:49mention Brian was married as well
- 26:52they confronted the police confronted
- 26:55Melissa with this information and she
- 26:57flatly denied the possibility that
- 27:00anyone that anyone other than Scott was
- 27:02the father of her baby
- 27:05so she requested that they do a second
- 27:07DNA test that a second test be done
- 27:11well they did and for a second time the
- 27:13test came back with the same results
- 27:15saying Brian was the father not Scott
- 27:19okay so does she still deny it well
- 27:23there's there's a little more to this
- 27:26story because at that point Melissa
- 27:29decides to quit speaking with police
- 27:32about the case and she's not willing she
- 27:36she will talk with them but at this
- 27:38point she lawyers up and she's not
- 27:40talking with them unless the lawyer is
- 27:42present and often the lawyer is
- 27:44recommending that she do not speak to
- 27:46them at all
- 27:47right now people everywhere they started
- 27:51to think that Melissa obviously had
- 27:54something to do with these murders right
- 27:56now it took roughly
- 27:59and I say I say roughly but as it comes
- 28:02as as the words come out of my mouth I
- 28:04could only imagine how rough it actually
- 28:06was but
- 28:07it took roughly 18 months that passed
- 28:10before the cloud of Suspicion
- 28:13surrounding Melissa would disappear
- 28:15okay all right friends and family of the
- 28:19victims they weren't even sure what to
- 28:21think at this point at some point
- 28:23Beverly this is Scott's mom remember who
- 28:26worked at the store as well right
- 28:28well the police decided that they should
- 28:30run her DNA against her sons Scott's DNA
- 28:34okay to see if anything funny was going
- 28:37on there
- 28:38the tests were run and then the results
- 28:40well what comes back is it's not a match
- 28:44I'm okay so something very strange is
- 28:46going on here right yeah or bad lab work
- 28:50there you go because after a lot of
- 28:52investigating and examining what
- 28:55possibly could have happened they
- 28:58realized that Scots and Brian's DNA
- 29:01samples had been mixed up for some
- 29:03reason
- 29:05so this poor lady right right she loses
- 29:09her husband and then you say hey
- 29:12um by the way we took the sample of this
- 29:14diaper we took the diaper we took some
- 29:16[ __ ] right and we went down to our lab
- 29:19and we tested it and came out that Scott
- 29:22is not the you know it's like Mori or
- 29:25something right it's like he is not the
- 29:28father and she's going wait a second he
- 29:31is the father there's no possibility no
- 29:33no Brian's a father she's probably
- 29:34thinking
- 29:35because she's telling the truth right
- 29:37right she's probably she knows she's
- 29:39telling the truth right she knows if she
- 29:41who she slept with and who she didn't
- 29:43sleep with and if she's saying there's
- 29:45no way in hell well and the samples
- 29:47probably could have been they could have
- 29:49been mixed up when they were collected
- 29:51at the crime scene because remember
- 29:53these two poor guys were laying next to
- 29:55each each other they may have just been
- 29:58mislabeled from the get-go so this means
- 30:00obviously that Melissa was telling the
- 30:02truth Scott was the father of her baby
- 30:05Beverly was Scott's mother just like
- 30:07everyone had always thought forever
- 30:09right so suddenly it doesn't look so
- 30:12suspicious that Melissa was only willing
- 30:14to speak with law enforcement with a
- 30:16lawyer present well it makes you start
- 30:18wondering the competency of the law
- 30:20enforcement yet the other thing though
- 30:22too is we have to think about this
- 30:25because she's trying to help them
- 30:27investigate the murder of her husband
- 30:28the the murder of her son's father and
- 30:32then at some point they are telling her
- 30:34this is not Scott's baby I'm sure she's
- 30:37like oh my God they're they're trying to
- 30:39pin this thing on me
- 30:41yeah well she'll and then once she knows
- 30:43that they're full of [ __ ] she's probably
- 30:46thinking man these window lickers how
- 30:49are they going to solve the case well
- 30:50this is the shittiest test I've ever
- 30:52heard of right so but just a real quick
- 30:54note here captain on kind of uh
- 30:56conflicting theories that were presented
- 30:58by persons closest to the case we have
- 31:01the investigators that believe that the
- 31:03gunman uh was armed with a pistol or
- 31:06handgun and he entered the shop from the
- 31:09back of the building and killed Chris
- 31:11Sherbert first while he was working on
- 31:14the motorcycle that they later found him
- 31:16slumped over they believed then the
- 31:19gunman walked through the shop toward
- 31:21the middle of the building then killed
- 31:23Beverly at the showroom then Brian Lucas
- 31:26at the main doorway and Scott Ponder in
- 31:29the parking lot now Noel who found the
- 31:32bodies
- 31:33he says that you know he kind of
- 31:36disagrees with their theories and with
- 31:38the rumors that he had been hearing
- 31:40around town the rumors he was hearing
- 31:42was that Scott and Brian were
- 31:43potentially running from the store
- 31:45running from the shop to get away from
- 31:48someone
- 31:49and he thinks that that what he thinks
- 31:52is more likely having known these guys
- 31:54is that possibly Scott was trying to
- 31:56defuse some type of Confrontation that
- 31:59was actually outside of the store when
- 32:01the shots were fired and Brian ran out
- 32:04to Scott's Aid
- 32:05so just a couple of opinions from
- 32:09persons closest to the case I think I
- 32:12think there's a chance that that both
- 32:13could be right in a sense that what
- 32:15seems pretty clear though
- 32:17is regardless of the order of the attack
- 32:20and how it took place Chris Sherbert
- 32:22he's working on the bike in the back of
- 32:25the building right and he apparently is
- 32:29unaware that there was any type of
- 32:31danger at all when he was shot so either
- 32:35he was surprised or had little to no
- 32:38time to react to what was going on or
- 32:40what was going to happen to him
- 32:42yeah well you wonder how loud it was in
- 32:45the shop because if let's say it's
- 32:47pretty loud I didn't take that into
- 32:48consideration but let's say you have
- 32:50some music blasting right right so then
- 32:53or your wrenching right yeah right some
- 32:56noises happening with your tools and
- 32:58there's a conversation with Scott in the
- 33:01front with this suspect and it gets
- 33:05heated
- 33:06he shoots Scott
- 33:07then Brian's coming out to help Scott he
- 33:11gets shot he makes his way into the
- 33:13store to kill the mother but then he
- 33:15goes around the store to the back where
- 33:19they would be working on the bike and
- 33:22that's why he'd be shot without knowing
- 33:24uh it's unlikely to me that they would
- 33:27not hear three gunshots but again
- 33:29depends on how loud the noise is and
- 33:32some people will wear like noise
- 33:33canceling headphones when they're
- 33:35working on with loud or earplugs right
- 33:38so we do see you know the detectives
- 33:40chasing the leads working them
- 33:43ultimately to the point where they start
- 33:44clearing suspects we start seeing the
- 33:48people closest to the victims getting
- 33:49clear to suspects specifically the wives
- 33:52and then the friend that found the
- 33:54bodies
- 33:55leads that were called in about strange
- 33:57people or suspicious people that were
- 34:00shared by Witnesses those were worked
- 34:03and cleared as well with the exception
- 34:05of the lead provided by Kelly Sisk and
- 34:07that's the best lead because when you
- 34:09have a guy that obviously doesn't know
- 34:11what he's talking about or that's what
- 34:14this lead was saying and then that same
- 34:17bike that that suspect was talking about
- 34:19is on you know in the back up working on
- 34:24it went from the showroom to to the
- 34:26service room hmm you know again that
- 34:30would be like and all I'm doing is going
- 34:32off of like guitar store knowledge but
- 34:35if some guy came in and he was looking
- 34:37at uh Flying V right and he said oh yeah
- 34:41I like this Flying V but I like to buy
- 34:43it we'd put it on the the workbench to
- 34:47do a couple tweaks to it before the guy
- 34:49bought it right and so if that guy then
- 34:52shot up the store and left it well see
- 34:55what I'm saying right well the thing
- 34:57though is
- 34:58okay so Kelly Kelly doesn't know who
- 35:02this guy is which is which is also
- 35:04strange in a way because this shop had a
- 35:07lot of quote-unquote regulars you know
- 35:10so when he's describing this guy he's
- 35:12saying not only did he not know what he
- 35:13was talking about regarding motorcycles
- 35:16he's no but he's no one that I've ever
- 35:18seen in the store before right and
- 35:20furthermore and if this does not come
- 35:23out very early in the investigation I
- 35:25think this came out quite late
- 35:28but we would later find out that the the
- 35:30bike the black motorcycle
- 35:33that Chris had been working on or doing
- 35:35something with when he was shot and
- 35:37ultimately found slumped over that bike
- 35:40right that bike had a bill of sale
- 35:42written up for that bike but there was
- 35:45no customer name written on the bill of
- 35:47sale
- 35:48so they they really believed that that
- 35:50just seconds before this attack went
- 35:52down the bike made its way to the back
- 35:54of the store
- 35:56maybe Chris took it back there or or it
- 35:58was walked back to him
- 36:00somebody's ringing up a bill of sale or
- 36:03writing it out and then the attacks must
- 36:05have went down right there before they
- 36:07could get this
- 36:08customer's name right and you think a
- 36:11crime that is this vicious it seems like
- 36:15the subject would have to know
- 36:18at least one or more of the victims
- 36:22but we don't have really any evidence
- 36:24saying that is true and where we see the
- 36:28um what we had referred to as the
- 36:30incompetence with the mixing up of the
- 36:32DNA samples that's a little tricky
- 36:36because you know does that fall on the
- 36:39the crime scene texts did they did they
- 36:42simply label those wrong but regardless
- 36:44if you're going to come out with an
- 36:45accusation like that maybe yeah you
- 36:48should have double you should double
- 36:49check your work yeah I mean it's one
- 36:52thing to make a mistake it's another
- 36:54thing to not double check and then make
- 36:57accusations like that because
- 37:00um again this this person is a victim
- 37:03and now you're you're going out I mean
- 37:06just to put in the Public's eyes that
- 37:09hey your son's father is not his father
- 37:13that makes her look like a pretty shitty
- 37:16person well not only that not only is he
- 37:18not the father but his his good friend
- 37:21maybe best friend and co-worker right or
- 37:23employee is the real father and the
- 37:26thing is you know people's people's
- 37:29lives and mindsets can be fragile
- 37:32especially a victim of this nature and
- 37:35to throw that out there you I mean you
- 37:37really could be pushing somebody over
- 37:40the edge to committing suicide or doing
- 37:42something
- 37:43doing something completely off the off
- 37:45the wall law enforcement's lucky that
- 37:48she's of strong mind
- 37:51now one thing that I do think that they
- 37:53did well though the the investigators
- 37:55did well and I I liken this to an old
- 37:58FBI tactic where when they released the
- 38:02description of this last known man to be
- 38:04in the Super Bike store this this fake
- 38:07customer guy when they released the
- 38:10description and the sketch of him they
- 38:12specifically say this guy's not a
- 38:14suspect he we're not considering him a
- 38:17suspect he he is somebody that we would
- 38:19like to talk to we would like for him to
- 38:21come forward because we believe that he
- 38:24could provide information that could
- 38:26help solve these cases or maybe he
- 38:30actually saw the real last person that
- 38:32was in the store right unfortunately
- 38:35this man does not come forward and the
- 38:40now famous case known as the superbike
- 38:42murders or to local law enforcement as
- 38:45simply Superbikes was at a standstill
- 38:48this case was still being worked from
- 38:50time to time now on the anniversary of
- 38:53the murders on the one two or even five
- 38:56and ten years after the quad homicide
- 38:58the phone would ring at the police
- 39:01station and somebody would provide some
- 39:03information that would ultimately be
- 39:05useless to the solving of the crimes but
- 39:08no matter how cold this case was
- 39:11Superbikes was always on the minds of
- 39:14the good men and women at the sheriff's
- 39:15department and on the hearts and minds
- 39:17of the people in the community and it
- 39:20just makes you wonder what like their
- 39:21policy or what the procedure was for
- 39:24writing a bill of sale and why there
- 39:27wasn't somebody's name on that bill of
- 39:30sale I wonder too I mean this points out
- 39:33to me Captain that the people selling
- 39:35the bike right may not have known the
- 39:37man's name and I know that sounds silly
- 39:39but I mean they don't know his name by
- 39:42he's not a regular at the store right
- 39:44right it's more confirmation of that
- 39:46maybe they had to ask him for a driver's
- 39:48license or something of that nature
- 39:50before they legitimately put it on the
- 39:52bill of sale right but now we have to
- 39:54fast forward to 13 years later late in
- 39:582016 in a
- 40:02in a completely different story here
- 40:04Captain this is taking place in Anderson
- 40:07South Carolina we have 32 year old
- 40:09Charles Carver
- 40:11he had recently been through a bitter
- 40:14divorce and he's now living in an
- 40:16apartment at the Anderson Crossing
- 40:18Apartments complex with his 30 year old
- 40:21girlfriend Kayla Brown
- 40:22now Charles who is described as a super
- 40:26down-to-earth great country guy he works
- 40:29at First Quality Enterprises
- 40:32Kayla who did a stint in the U.S army
- 40:35After High School was working at a
- 40:37dialysis center uh she started working
- 40:40there in 2013. the happy boyfriend and
- 40:44girlfriend they were very social people
- 40:46uh easy to get along with and could
- 40:48often be seen walking their little
- 40:50pomeranian dog named Romeo
- 40:57like a whole bunch of us Charles and
- 40:59Kayla they used
- 41:01Facebook to stay up to date with you
- 41:03know with their friends and family and
- 41:05such
- 41:06both were tight with their families and
- 41:08both were considered to be very reliable
- 41:11and dependable people
- 41:13then one day in early September of 2016
- 41:17people started to take notice
- 41:20it seems no one had seen either Charles
- 41:23or Kayla in quite some time
- 41:25both were missing work and people
- 41:29started to wonder who's taking care of
- 41:31their little dog Romeo right they were
- 41:34both reported missing and authorities
- 41:35started looking for the couple and
- 41:38started trying to determine where they
- 41:40were last seen and heard from now
- 41:43according to police reports from the
- 41:45Anderson Police Department Charles's
- 41:47mother Claudia had been unable to reach
- 41:50him since she says August 29 2016. so
- 41:55how long is that
- 41:56well they weren't reported missing until
- 41:58early September
- 42:00and then we have Caleb Brown's friend
- 42:02Leah Miller she told police that she had
- 42:05last heard from Kayla on August 31st but
- 42:09this was in the form of a short text
- 42:10message right the message just simply
- 42:13said are you awake I guess Leah did not
- 42:16answer that text until later that day
- 42:19but when she did reply to the text she
- 42:22never heard anything back from Kayla so
- 42:25Charles's car had vanished as well the
- 42:28couple's cell phones eventually went
- 42:30dead
- 42:31even their beloved dog was you know he's
- 42:34at home
- 42:35without food or water right now August
- 42:3831st the August 31st text Captain is
- 42:42believed to be the last communication
- 42:43from either one of these people
- 42:47and this is until we start seeing some
- 42:49activity in September and October these
- 42:52are odd postings that appear on Facebook
- 42:55okay they're posting them well there
- 42:58were several news articles reporting the
- 43:01story okay from time to time about the
- 43:04uh the missing people but then there's
- 43:07also some news articles that come out
- 43:09and they start reporting this uh one in
- 43:12particular is from The Daily Beast
- 43:13stated that the facts pretty clearly
- 43:16state that someone is pretending to be
- 43:20this missing couple on Facebook
- 43:23and they're adding that ever since
- 43:25Charlie Carver Charles Carver and Caleb
- 43:28Brown vanished someone had been adding
- 43:31life events on Facebook and even
- 43:34messaging their friends
- 43:37okay so that's strange yeah they simply
- 43:41asked a simple question here
- 43:43could this be the ex-wife remember we
- 43:46talked about a bitter divorce right now
- 43:49according to this article from The Daily
- 43:51Beast Charlie Carver's Facebook page
- 43:53tells the story of a man that was
- 43:56currently in love at the time of his
- 43:57disappearance
- 43:59but it also states that on July 1st
- 44:01Carver posted that he and his girlfriend
- 44:04were expecting a daughter
- 44:06and then on August 1st the two bought a
- 44:10house together and then on September 1st
- 44:13the couple got married now what
- 44:16horrified Charles's friends and family
- 44:18was that all of these happy new
- 44:21Milestones on his timeline were logged
- 44:24retroactively right they weren't logged
- 44:27until October 1st which was more than a
- 44:31month after the time that the two were
- 44:33considered to have been missing right I
- 44:36don't know much about these uh life
- 44:38posts or life events but it is weird
- 44:41that they're posting them afterwards I'm
- 44:43guessing what it is is like if you got a
- 44:45new job uh September 1st that sometimes
- 44:48people don't post that they got a job
- 44:50September 1st they might wait wait a
- 44:52couple weeks see how it goes right but
- 44:55the fact that there's all these you know
- 44:57we're we're expecting a kid we got
- 44:59married uh for people that are very
- 45:02involved with their family
- 45:04um even if it was true you'd start
- 45:07wondering well what the heck is going on
- 45:08with this couple they're not
- 45:10communicating with anybody in their
- 45:11family
- 45:14everybody's wondering there's got to be
- 45:16someone out there that's posing as
- 45:18Charles
- 45:19and still sending messages to his
- 45:22friends the first week of October do we
- 45:25have any idea of what kind of messages
- 45:28uh well there was there was this
- 45:31incident that the first week of October
- 45:33sometime in the first week of October
- 45:34someone had uploaded and then quickly
- 45:37deleted an old picture of the couple
- 45:40um
- 45:41and there was a caption that that came
- 45:45along with the picture that just said we
- 45:46are fine right and then that was deleted
- 45:49yeah and then the missing couple's case
- 45:52it was starting to gain more and more
- 45:54attention from the media as these things
- 45:57were happening and then there came a
- 45:59particularly cryptic post this was on
- 46:02well before this I mean as far as law
- 46:05enforcement goes again yes these people
- 46:07are close with their family
- 46:09but it's not too far out of the realm to
- 46:13think that they just went missing
- 46:14because they wanted to then they are
- 46:17still active on Facebook I mean it has
- 46:19to be in the back your head that this
- 46:21could be them
- 46:22posting this stuff
- 46:25yeah yeah I mean yeah absolutely the the
- 46:29but the really odd thing is that the
- 46:32purchasing of the house right is weird
- 46:35to me because yeah do people do people
- 46:37get pregnant do couples get pregnant and
- 46:39decide to get married and they take off
- 46:40it happens it does happen right but
- 46:43rarely would I say do we see somebody
- 46:45say oh we bought a house and then
- 46:47you know 30 days later we're we're at a
- 46:50Dodge right you can't find us anywhere
- 46:52and furthermore where's this house right
- 46:55they were still living in the apartment
- 46:56complex when when they were last seen
- 46:59right that would be real shitty people
- 47:02like hey we now got a house but we're
- 47:05gonna leave the dog behind right now
- 47:07that we have more space for the dog
- 47:09unfortunately there are people out there
- 47:11that there are people all that stuff so
- 47:14so regarding this cryptic post that was
- 47:16put on Charles Carver's Facebook page uh
- 47:19the post that that gained a lot of
- 47:21attention in the media was this it was
- 47:24it read last thing I remember I was
- 47:27running for the door I had to find the
- 47:29passage back to the place I was before
- 47:31relax said the night man we are
- 47:34programmed to receive you can check out
- 47:36anytime you like but you can never leave
- 47:39Hotel California by the Eagles
- 47:43now since their disappearance we said
- 47:45that these messages started to appear uh
- 47:49and they were retroactively put on their
- 47:52Facebook page but during those couple of
- 47:54months here we have Charles's family who
- 47:57they very quickly showed up after they
- 47:59reported him missing they took the dog
- 48:02to care for the dog good good people
- 48:04they even paid the rent for the couple's
- 48:07apartment for a couple of months
- 48:09and then one day Charles's family they
- 48:12showed up and they backed up a truck and
- 48:15they packed up all of the couple's
- 48:16belongings and they took off right this
- 48:19would be very difficult on the family
- 48:21meanwhile you know while all this scary
- 48:24crazy stuff is going on with the missing
- 48:26couple's Facebook pages
- 48:29police have an active missing persons
- 48:31case going on and they are working this
- 48:34case from every angle
- 48:36Anderson Police investigators they were
- 48:39able to obtain a warrant or a court
- 48:42order for cell phone records from a t
- 48:45this is Kayla Brown's cell phone service
- 48:48provider police wanted to use technology
- 48:52to try to locate the missing couple they
- 48:55wanted to see if they could locate
- 48:56Kayla's last cell phone signal now this
- 49:00is not as simple as it may sound this
- 49:03isn't the more common GPS technology
- 49:06most people are familiar with that you
- 49:08know what that would only work if Kayla
- 49:11had location services turned on or right
- 49:14like find my phone feature turned on
- 49:16instead what the investigators were able
- 49:19to obtain they obtained cell phone
- 49:22records that would show which cell phone
- 49:25towers Kayla's phone had connected to up
- 49:28until the moment that the phone had died
- 49:31yeah these look these are true crime
- 49:33listeners right they all know about cell
- 49:36phone ping technology well I I know that
- 49:39Captain I bring this up only because
- 49:41there are some specific details within
- 49:44this investigation that may be a little
- 49:46different from what we typically hear
- 49:48what we're used to right okay so just in
- 49:52case there's one or two people out there
- 49:54that don't know the the the cell phone
- 49:57is always searching for the close
- 49:59closest or strongest signal so cell
- 50:02towers keep a log of these pings you
- 50:04know when when the two two connect with
- 50:07each other there's a ping so since pings
- 50:10are being sent constantly between
- 50:12multiple Towers records will then allow
- 50:15law enforcement later to triangulate a
- 50:19phone's location based on the strength
- 50:21of the pings between the towers right
- 50:24well to triangulate this and to really
- 50:26narrow it down to a specific location
- 50:28you need three towers
- 50:31in this situation this situation is
- 50:33quite a bit it's quite more difficult
- 50:35because
- 50:37this situation we only have two towers
- 50:40that are nearby right because this is a
- 50:42rural area
- 50:44so
- 50:45having becomes a lot harder right having
- 50:48two towers nearby versus three gives a
- 50:51larger search area because the search
- 50:54area should be based on where the two
- 50:56towers where the where the tower signals
- 50:58overlap right so here you would only
- 51:01have two rather than three what they
- 51:03discovered in Kayla's cell phone
- 51:05situation that it had pinged indicating
- 51:08Kayla's phone was in a town 50 miles
- 51:12Northeast of where the two had lived and
- 51:15the phone was sending a signal up to two
- 51:18days after she was last seen on August
- 51:2131st and these pings were coming from
- 51:24the location of Woodruff South Carolina
- 51:26so Captain we have the super bike
- 51:29quadruple homicide that takes place in
- 51:322003 and then 13 years later we have The
- 51:36Disappearance of this young couple
- 51:37that's receiving media attention because
- 51:40of these strange Facebook postings well
- 51:43what did the two of these cases have to
- 51:46do with one another we'll get to that
- 51:47tomorrow and part two
- 51:49[Music]
- 51:56till tomorrow everybody out there be
- 51:58good be kind and don't litter
- 52:00[Music]
- 52:15[Applause]
