- 0:01writing a short film that you can
- 0:03actually shoot the first tip is not to
- 0:05structure it like a feature film try to
- 0:07focus on a small moment in time or a
- 0:10simple goal that your main character can
- 0:12achieve some examples of this are the
- 0:13oscar-winning short film stutterer and
- 0:16the duplos brothers short film this is
- 0:18John which got into Sundance and focuses
- 0:20on a character who is just trying to
- 0:22leave their outgoing voicemail message
- 0:24so the second tip is to limit your
- 0:26characters especially your main
- 0:27characters in the short if you look at a
- 0:29film like Jim Cummings Thunder Road
- 0:31which in my opinion is one of the best
- 0:32short films ever made there are a ton of
- 0:34people in the funeral Hall yes like lots
- 0:36of extras but the story focuses almost
- 0:39entirely on his character and the
- 0:41journey that he's going through and on
- 0:42that same note tip number three is to
- 0:44limit your locations especially if
- 0:46you're trying to do this in one day
- 0:47where you're calling on favors from
- 0:49Friends limiting your scope again and
- 0:51limiting the number of locations you
- 0:53actually have to film in is going to
- 0:55make your life so much easier be sure to
