- 0:16welcome back to another Jazz drummer
- 0:18Q-tip of the week if you're new my name
- 0:21is Quincy Davis thank you so much for
- 0:23stopping by I hope you enjoyed this
- 0:25lesson so much that you smashed that
- 0:27like button so in this lesson I am going
- 0:30to be offering you tips for better
- 0:31trading on the drums and for me trading
- 0:35has always been more difficult than
- 0:37actually taking a whole solo over a form
- 0:39and I think the reason is because you
- 0:41have such a finite amount of time to get
- 0:44your ideas out so I've actually had to
- 0:47think about some of these strategies and
- 0:49tips for myself to make sure that I feel
- 0:52comfortable with my own trading so I
- 0:55think these tips are going to be helpful
- 0:56for you as well so if you're ready then
- 0:58I'm ready are you guys ready are you
- 1:00really ready this week for the trades
- 1:02the trading well if so let's go
- 1:07okay
- 1:08[Music]
- 1:24foreign
- 1:26[Music]
- 1:38so the first thing that I always have to
- 1:41remind myself when I'm trading is to
- 1:44think ahead and it may seem obvious but
- 1:47um kind of When We're In the Heat of the
- 1:48Moment We were getting excited there's a
- 1:51chance that we forget to think ahead
- 1:53exactly about what's going to happen
- 1:55next so think ahead and have an idea of
- 1:58how you want to start your trade and for
- 2:00me that has helped me so much so I'll
- 2:02demonstrate with that kind of looks like
- 2:06and convey exactly the idea that I'm
- 2:09thinking before I get there and play it
- 2:11[Music]
- 2:14that's what I'm gonna do
- 2:17[Music]
- 2:22right
- 2:23blah blah blah blah blah
- 2:26[Music]
- 2:30all right
- 2:33[Music]
- 2:39one more yeah
- 2:41[Music]
- 2:48right so though I was trading fours in
- 2:51that case and as you can hear I was
- 2:54playing exactly what I was singing right
- 2:57and maybe it wasn't perfectly exactly
- 3:00perfectly except it's that damn green
- 3:02tea again
- 3:03um maybe it wasn't perfectly exactly but
- 3:06it was mostly exactly
- 3:08perfect
- 3:13all right so let's say you're still
- 3:15struggling with coming up with ideas to
- 3:18play right well one of the problems
- 3:20might be the second tip which is make
- 3:23sure you have a plethora of language and
- 3:26vocabulary in your belt that you've
- 3:28studied you transcribed you listen to
- 3:30right and you only do that from
- 3:32listening to Great Master drummers I
- 3:35don't need to list them but I will Jimmy
- 3:36Cobb Frankie Dunlop Ben Riley Papa Joe
- 3:40Jones Max Roach Bill Stewart Lewis Nash
- 3:44all of them do all of them Mel Lewis
- 3:46Buddy Rich whoever you gravitate towards
- 3:50learn a lot of their stuff and get it in
- 3:53your playing that way you have so much
- 3:55to draw from and you never want to sound
- 3:58try to sound exactly like them when
- 4:00you're on a gig when you're in the
- 4:01practice room you do when you're on a
- 4:03gig just play and hopefully you've
- 4:05studied them enough that it just starts
- 4:07to come out by the way
- 4:09I got a volume one and now a volume two
- 4:12of solo vac vocabulary that you can
- 4:16check out so that's going to give you a
- 4:18whole lot of language to check out
- 4:27[Music]
- 4:32thank you
- 4:35all right so this next tip
- 4:38um is really extremely important
- 4:41sometimes play the opposite
- 4:44stay with me of what you naturally might
- 4:48do
- 4:49either dynamically
- 4:52or density wise
- 4:54language wise
- 4:57there's so many different things that
- 4:59you you might have a tendency to do and
- 5:01try to do something different and the
- 5:03reason is because sometimes we think we
- 5:05have to do something when we don't have
- 5:07to do it
- 5:08let me say that again sometimes we think
- 5:09we have to do something where we don't
- 5:11have to do it okay so sometimes we think
- 5:14we have to play a lot
- 5:16to sound good or to to sound hip
- 5:19but you don't so in those instances when
- 5:23you feel like you want to play a lot
- 5:26right instead going
- 5:28[Music]
- 5:34not saying that sign is so horrible but
- 5:37instead of doing that maybe I'll go like
- 5:39this
- 5:41[Music]
- 5:48right so I kind of started it the same
- 5:50but then I said hold on hold on hold on
- 5:52I don't want to go down that just kind
- 5:54of loud dense path I want to do
- 5:57something a little more interesting so
- 5:59and this only happens when you're really
- 6:01experiencing you have the confidence to
- 6:04try something different don't try
- 6:05something different if you're not
- 6:06comfortable with it but when you get to
- 6:08that point when you you find yourself
- 6:10kind of regurgitating the same ideas and
- 6:12playing the same way that's definitely a
- 6:14tip that will help
- 6:16me I mean you you me you me both of us
- 6:20yeah
- 6:27[Music]
- 6:38okay so this next one right
- 6:42it's really important sometimes we turn
- 6:43off our ears when we're Trading
- 6:46can't do that stay acutely aware of
- 6:49everything that's going on in the song
- 6:52in the form it's all right there and
- 6:55also in the band and there within those
- 6:59those things right those areas you might
- 7:02get some ideas that Inspire your own
- 7:04traits so let's say I'm playing and the
- 7:07song you know maybe the song is based on
- 7:10this for the best
- 7:12maybe that's the Rhythm right or a
- 7:14certain maybe the bridge goes
- 7:17right so why not put that in my trade
- 7:21[Music]
- 7:26[Music]
- 7:30you know and it doesn't sound it sounds
- 7:32good it sounds good and I'm using the
- 7:34information from the song or maybe
- 7:36someone in the in in the Solo in one of
- 7:40the trades right before my trade The
- 7:43Soloist play something that I'm like oh
- 7:45I like that they're so we're playing
- 7:48oh
- 7:51[Music]
- 7:59you see and suddenly now it sounds
- 8:01relevant to what's happening around me
- 8:03rather than just random ideas that are
- 8:06not connected to anything that's
- 8:08happening
- 8:09thank you
- 8:13all right so this last tip or Q-tip if
- 8:16you will
- 8:18is
- 8:19um to make sure or try to create a
- 8:22Common Thread through all of your trades
- 8:25so I'll play let's say I play Four
- 8:28trades right now
- 8:29um and I want you to hear
- 8:32how I try to keep a Common Thread
- 8:35through them all even though the the
- 8:36material and the trade themselves are
- 8:39different let's see if I can do that one
- 8:41two
- 8:43[Music]
- 8:49[Music]
- 8:52right okay let's see what happens
- 8:55[Music]
- 9:01okay
- 9:02what happened now
- 9:05[Music]
- 9:10one more to go
- 9:11okay
- 9:14[Music]
- 9:18right and again maybe it's not so
- 9:21obvious to you to The Listener or you
- 9:24right now but to me
- 9:26everything that I played was completely
- 9:29totally related to that first trait that
- 9:32I did
- 9:35I took that idea and applied it to all
- 9:37the rest of my trades you can take more
- 9:39obvious rhythms maybe you go
- 9:42you know
- 9:44and then you orchestrate that in way in
- 9:47different ways
- 9:49[Music]
- 9:55right so you can use all those different
- 9:58orchestrations in your different trades
- 9:59and it'll sound more connected and
- 10:03cohesive
- 10:04so that is the lesson I hope it was
- 10:06helpful do a lot of studying and of
- 10:09course check out if you're looking for
- 10:11new material to check out again I've
- 10:13transcribed and kind of created phrases
- 10:16off of some of my favorite drummers
- 10:17ideas and that's going to be in volume
- 10:21two some of you have volume one but
- 10:22volume two of my uh it's not just Bebop
- 10:26it's some more modern ideas modern
- 10:28drummers uh solo vocabulary ebooks so
- 10:31you got to check that out but until the
- 10:33next time you know what to do practice
- 10:34hard
- 10:37for practice smart take care bye-bye
