- 0:02Bro, what? In Minecraft, you can attack
- 0:05other entities from only up to three
- 0:06blocks away, but you can actually give
- 0:08yourself a reach of four and a half
- 0:10blocks, increasing your reach by 50%.
- 0:13What I'm talking about is a technique I
- 0:14like to call triple swapping, and it's
- 0:16actually pretty simple. All you need is
- 0:18a spear. The tier doesn't matter. Then
- 0:21you just need an item to start from and
- 0:23an item to end with. Okay, it's not that
- 0:25simple. To use this technique, you must
- 0:27first understand how it works, starting
- 0:29with something you probably already know
- 0:30about, attribute swapping.
- 0:32>> At the start of each tick, the server
- 0:34will check for any attribute changes.
- 0:36This is done via the tick equipment
- 0:37update function. All we need to know is
- 0:39that when this function runs, all
- 0:41attribute values are recalculated.
- 0:42Whenever you want to attack, the client
- 0:44will run the attack function. First, it
- 0:45lets the server know if the selected hot
- 0:47bar slot was changed. Then, it
- 0:49[clears throat] will tell the server you
- 0:50are attacking an entity, which then runs
- 0:51the logic for the attack on the server.
- 0:53Attribute swapping occurs because the
- 0:55server will use the attributes
- 0:56calculated from the start of this tick,
- 0:58but the enchantments and properties are
- 1:00as of the selected item. A tick
- 1:01[laughter] doesn't pass in between when
- 1:03the selected item changes and when the
- 1:04attack occurs. This leaves a one tick,
- 1:06or 50 millisecond, window of time for
- 1:08attribute swapping to occur.
- 1:10>> While starting with a sword, switching
- 1:12to the spear, and attacking with a mace,
- 1:14I can actually get the sword's
- 1:15attributes, the spear's reach, and the
- 1:17mace's properties. But use the sword's
- 1:18attributes at the every single tick. So,
- 1:20how is it possible that we can switch
- 1:22the items without attributes updating?
- 1:24>> The client and server start their tick
- 1:26having the sword selected. At the end of
- 1:28the tick, the client runs the key bind
- 1:30logic, which detects that a hot bar
- 1:32button has [clears throat] been pressed.
- 1:33The client then switches its selected
- 1:35slot to the one with the spear, on the
- 1:36client only. It does not tell the server
- 1:39this happened yet. After this happens,
- 1:41the player must then press the key binds
- 1:42to switch to their mace and attack
- 1:44[clears throat] in around 50
- 1:46milliseconds. The next tick is started
- 1:48on the client and server. However, the
- 1:50client only sends the hot bar selected
- 1:52packet after the tick starts. This means
- 1:54that when the server starts its tick, it
- 1:56still thinks the player has the sword
- 1:58held because the client hasn't told it
- 2:00that the selected item has changed yet.
- 2:02The targeted entity is then calculated
- 2:04on the client with the spear in their
- 2:06hand, which means it uses the reach of
- 2:08the spear. [laughter]
- 2:09After that, the key binds are processed.
- 2:11The client attacks the hopper button for
- 2:13the mace was pressed. So, now the client
- 2:16sees it's holding the mace. Then, the
- 2:18attack logic starts. The critical flaw
- 2:20allowing for spear macing is that the
- 2:22targeted entity was calculated before
- 2:24the key binds were handled, meaning that
- 2:26the mace attack uses the targeted entity
- 2:29data from when the spear was held. The
- 2:32client then does the attack logic, which
- 2:34notifies the server that they're holding
- 2:35the mace and that they attacked an
- 2:37entity. When the attack is processed on
- 2:39the server, it sees the player is
- 2:40holding the mace. This means we get the
- 2:43attributes of the sword, the reach of
- 2:44the spear, and the properties and
- 2:46enchantments of the mace.
- 2:48>> As you just learned, this technique is
- 2:50entirely client-side, which means no
- 2:51matter your ping, it's always the same.
- 2:53On high ping, you're going to have a lot
- 2:55of funny moments, but you still have the
- 2:56disadvantage of being high ping player.
- 2:58Additionally, because the technique is
- 3:00client-side, most servers react to it
- 3:02differently. Mine men adds a one tick
- 3:03delay to your attack registering, so it
- 3:05doesn't flag it straight away,
- 3:07it was broken on PvP it's good for a
- 3:08while, but now it's fixed. It is
- 3:10completely normal on MCPvP, but I have
- 3:13been banned by staff three times for
- 3:14this. Moving on, if you've played with
- 3:16the spear before, then you might have
- 3:18noticed it slightly expands the hit box
- 3:20of your enemies. Triple swapping carries
- 3:21that over as well, often allowing hits
- 3:23that do not look possible. There's
- 3:25really only one downside to triple
- 3:27swapping, that are delayed to your hits
- 3:29because you're swapping slots. For spear
- 3:31mace, this does not matter at all, but
- 3:33in a SMP style game modes, you need to
- 3:35play around it. My most important piece
- 3:36of advice is to only triple swap when
- 3:38you need to. Play the game like you
- 3:40normally would, and only use the people
- 3:42backing out or you want to gain some
- 3:43free hits in between exchanges. One of
- 3:45my favorite use cases is getting spring
- 3:47hit and then pickering back using the
- 3:49extra reach. Overall, you should try to
- 3:51enhance your gameplay with it other than
- 3:53base it off of it. This video just
- 3:55explains how the technique works. It's
- 3:57very likely that I make some follow-up
- 3:59videos that expand on this topic
- 4:00further. For now, that's all I have to
- 4:01say about triple shopping. There's no
- 4:03point in me dragging the video out any
- 4:04longer, so see you soon.
