- 0:00This is the Faultrick TD2 E Acoustic
- 0:03Camera and it's going to be a
- 0:04game-changer for automotive technicians.
- 0:07And in this video, we're going to look
- 0:08at some obvious ways to make the most of
- 0:10this tool plus some very creative ways
- 0:12of finding problems you might not have
- 0:14thought a camera like this would help.
- 0:17Okay, so this is an acoustic camera and
- 0:21what makes this one quite interesting is
- 0:24the price. So, acoustic cameras have
- 0:26traditionally come in with a price tag
- 0:28of around $10,000. This is much, much
- 0:31less. Faultrick have sent us this in
- 0:34return for making a video and we also
- 0:36have some links in the description
- 0:38below. You can go and check that out and
- 0:41see if it's something that you want to
- 0:43go for. So, this is the TD2 E version.
- 0:46There is a slightly more expensive
- 0:47version which I am also interested in
- 0:49because it has a HDMI port on the top
- 0:51which this budget version doesn't have.
- 0:53They also have a phone version of it as
- 0:56well. So, how it works, we've got 64
- 0:59microphones strategically placed on the
- 1:02front of this camera with the actual
- 1:04camera sensor in the middle there. We
- 1:07also have a light for, you know, dark
- 1:09places which you're going to be using in
- 1:11a minute. And then on the screen here,
- 1:13you can see that it's picking up all the
- 1:15different noises in the workshop. Now,
- 1:18what's quite interesting about this is
- 1:20it works for frequencies between 2 kHz
- 1:23and 100 kHz. So, it will even pick up
- 1:26very sensitive things like me breathing.
- 1:31So, traditionally these have been used
- 1:33by big industrial companies for finding
- 1:36leaks in factories and power plants and
- 1:40things like that. And I'm going to show
- 1:42you today a couple of tests. So, let's
- 1:44get straight on probably the most
- 1:46obvious one to look at, a mechanical
- 1:48noise.
- 1:49Okay, so the camera has a couple of
- 1:52modes and the startup mode is in a
- 1:54single source. So, what that does is it
- 1:57picks up the loudest noise and and kind
- 2:00of shows you where it is. You can see on
- 2:02the right-hand side as well, it gives a
- 2:04scale of the frequencies that are being
- 2:06picked up. So, you can see that most of
- 2:08the noise is being picked up at the
- 2:09minute are in that lower frequency
- 2:11range. Now, for diagnostics, I think a
- 2:14good thing to do would be to start with
- 2:16all sources and now you can see that it
- 2:18picks up all of the noises around the
- 2:21vehicle. So, what we've got on here, so
- 2:23hopefully you can hear it, is a bit of a
- 2:25ticking noise. The back wheels are
- 2:27spinning at the minute. And when it's in
- 2:30motion, there's like a ticking noise
- 2:31coming from the back.
- 2:33So, as we walk under the vehicle, you
- 2:35can see that there's all sorts of
- 2:36different noises being picked up from
- 2:38the engine area.
- 2:40And as we walk down the back,
- 2:43we can actually see there's a hot spot
- 2:45there right in the middle
- 2:47being picked up around the prop shaft
- 2:49area. So, what we can do now as well is
- 2:50just use the light. So, we switch the
- 2:52light on.
- 2:55And here we are. So, you can almost like
- 2:57pinpoint where the main noise is coming
- 3:00from. There are other noises down here
- 3:02as well. So, if we point this at the at
- 3:04the wheel area, you can see things being
- 3:06picked up from the brakes.
- 3:08And once you kind of get close into
- 3:11where the noise is,
- 3:13switch it to single source,
- 3:16and it will help pick up where that
- 3:18loudest noise is coming from.
- 3:20So, all I have actually done here is is
- 3:22put a
- 3:23a cable tie
- 3:28around the prop shaft and it's just
- 3:30ticking along on there on the um fuel
- 3:32tank there.
- 3:34So, although that is quite an obvious
- 3:36noise to find,
- 3:38it just shows you how quickly this thing
- 3:40can pinpoint those noises and use the
- 3:44different features that you've got on
- 3:45there like all sources and move down to
- 3:48single source to identify where it's
- 3:50coming from.
- 3:52So, sticking with the mechanical noise
- 3:55theme, we're going to induce a noise on
- 3:57this engine now. Now, I'm going to first
- 4:00do a shot of the engine with no faults,
- 4:04and then we're going to install a fault
- 4:05to make the fuel system howl, and see if
- 4:08we can identify where that noise is
- 4:10coming from.
- 4:11Okay, so we've got the camera trained
- 4:13onto the engine, and we're using the
- 4:16MultiSource, which is picking up the
- 4:19different sources of noise, and just
- 4:21showing them where they are. Um what's
- 4:23quite interesting is what happens when
- 4:25we put the fault on this vehicle. So,
- 4:29all I'm going to do is disconnect the
- 4:30high pressure pump, and that puts the
- 4:33fuel system in into a default high
- 4:35pressure mode, so it runs at maximum
- 4:37pressure, and we get this kind of
- 4:38squealing noise. Let's see what happens
- 4:40on the camera.
- 4:41So, at the minute you can see we've got
- 4:44some noises kind of around here,
- 4:47but it's it's moving around a bit.
- 4:50Of course, it's quite noisy while the
- 4:52engine's running.
- 4:53If we just take that off,
- 4:57hopefully you can hear that now. We've
- 4:59got a definite noise, and it's picking
- 5:01it up a little bit further up.
- 5:04Before we were having like noises
- 5:06flipping around here, but now we've got
- 5:08a definite noise locked on here, and if
- 5:12we put it onto single source mode,
- 5:17there it's picking up that noise just
- 5:20from that point there.
- 5:21So, what we've actually actually got
- 5:23down here is the the high pressure pump
- 5:24here, which I've disconnected, and then
- 5:27on the bottom of the high pressure pump
- 5:30there's a that metal pipe that goes into
- 5:31the rail, and that pipe at the end of
- 5:34that pipe is creating a lot of noise,
- 5:37and that's what the camera's picking up.
- 5:39So, if we just go back to that all
- 5:40source mode,
- 5:43we can see that down there is where that
- 5:45the most of that noise is being picked
- 5:47picked up. The high pressure pump itself
- 5:50is also showing up a bit noisy.
- 5:53If we go to single source down here,
- 5:57you can see that around that high
- 5:59pressure pipe is where that noise is
- 6:01being
- 6:03picked up the most.
- 6:05We can also see the high pressure pump
- 6:07is a little bit noisy as well.
- 6:10So, I think this would also be really
- 6:11good for finding noises on the
- 6:14auxiliary drive belt when you've got
- 6:15bearing noises and squeals and things
- 6:17like that. Um I suppose especially if
- 6:20the access is quite difficult. Now we
- 6:22start to get into the area that really
- 6:24stretches the capabilities of this tool.
- 6:27Not so much stretch the capabilities,
- 6:29but use them, okay? Now, just to put
- 6:31this into perspective, we said the
- 6:33camera was effective between 2 kHz and
- 6:37100 kHz. Now, humans uh hearing is
- 6:41really only suited for low frequencies,
- 6:44and I'm going to show you what that
- 6:45means now. So, I've got a um
- 6:48it's a it's just a frequency generator
- 6:50app, and it's set to about 2 kHz of
- 6:53sound. So, if we play that noise now,
- 6:58most people should be able to hear that.
- 7:00Sorry, headphone users. But, what I'm
- 7:02going to do now is increase that
- 7:03frequency, okay? And now listen what
- 7:06happens.
- 7:07This will really depend on your age as
- 7:09well, whether you can hear it all the
- 7:10way up.
- 7:17Okay, so that's 5,000 Hz. I can still
- 7:19kind of hear that okay.
- 7:23Now we're at 8,000 Hz, and it's getting
- 7:26getting loud. Well, it's not getting
- 7:27louder, it's just getting a bit harder
- 7:29to hear. There's 10 kHz.
- 7:32Uh we get to about 14, I can
- 7:35just hear it very very very faintly in
- 7:38the background. Younger viewers will
- 7:40probably be able to hear that. So, if we
- 7:42play this noise to the camera, let's see
- 7:46what happens.
- 7:49We can see that it's being picked up.
- 7:50What I'm looking at really is this scale
- 7:52on the side there. And if we increase
- 7:54that up,
- 7:57what we can see is that that
- 8:00frequency, the noise of that frequency,
- 8:03is showing high there, okay? So, that
- 8:05goes up to 10.
- 8:08We carry on going up. It's still picking
- 8:09up a bit of noise there. But I think
- 8:11actually beyond this, the phone
- 8:14this app isn't actually creating that
- 8:16noise.
- 8:17It drops out at about 15 kHz.
- 8:21So, why am I showing you that? There are
- 8:23many noises on these vehicles that are
- 8:25just beyond the hearing capability of
- 8:28humans, but this thing can see it. One
- 8:30of those things being leaks. So, what
- 8:32I'm going to do now is induce an intake
- 8:34leak on this vehicle and see if we can
- 8:36find it.
- 8:38Okay, so we've put an air leak fault on
- 8:41this engine, and that would be something
- 8:44that would coincide with a lean running
- 8:46fault or a fuel mixture fault.
- 8:49So, if we just kind of scan around the
- 8:51engine here,
- 8:53put the light on. What we're really
- 8:54looking for is is I suppose along the
- 8:57pipes in the areas of the intake
- 9:00manifold, and we can see here that we've
- 9:02actually got a a hot spot
- 9:06right in the middle there
- 9:08on that pipe.
- 9:10And if we zoom out a bit and then just
- 9:12go to
- 9:14single source,
- 9:16you can see that it's
- 9:18picking up that area as a source of
- 9:22high noise.
- 9:25So, that could be super useful for these
- 9:28petrol engines with really complex
- 9:31intake systems or the diesel engines
- 9:34that tend to have lots and lots of
- 9:35vacuum now. This should be able to
- 9:37pinpoint those leaks quite easily. I
- 9:39know we have the smoke tester that can
- 9:41be quite useful. However, sometimes
- 9:43these faults only appear while the
- 9:45engine is running. So, being able to put
- 9:47the engine into that active state and
- 9:50then check around for those leaks is
- 9:52really quite useful. So, all we did
- 9:54there was remove the seal off that
- 9:56crankcase breather hose to induce that
- 9:59leak. So, this next test is potentially
- 10:02my favorite test yet a little bit
- 10:04creative. Now, what we need to think
- 10:06about is when we've got things that are
- 10:09active, you can see that when I point
- 10:11the camera at the computer and stuff
- 10:13over here, there's not a lot of noise
- 10:15going on, but it's picking up all sorts
- 10:18of stuff. You know, we've got this
- 10:20LED light here. It's picking up noise
- 10:22from there. So, potentially, it could be
- 10:26picking up those high-frequency noises
- 10:28generated by electronic items when
- 10:31they're active.
- 10:33Battery drain faults. So, when we look
- 10:36inside this vehicle, we can see there's
- 10:39lots of noises coming from around the
- 10:41instrument cluster and dash areas and
- 10:44that is with the ignition on.
- 10:46Also, looking around the center console,
- 10:48we can see there's lots of activity and
- 10:52there's a good three or four control
- 10:53units down in that area.
- 10:55Just while I'm sat in here, it's just
- 10:57made me think of a rattle that I've got
- 10:58on my car coming from the headrest or
- 11:01headrest area, how you should say. This
- 11:03would also be great for finding that
- 11:05problem.
- 11:06And you know, if we come down to the
- 11:08rear of the car, we can see there's a
- 11:10bunch of control units there and they're
- 11:12all making lots of noise that we just
- 11:15can't hear.
- 11:16What's also quite impressive is I've
- 11:18been filming for about an hour now and
- 11:20we're probably not even at the halfway
- 11:22point on the battery.
- 11:23So, that was the Photo Trick TD2E
- 11:26acoustic camera. Pretty impressive bit
- 11:28of kit. Let us know down in the comments
