This Tiny Bathroom Changed the Entire House — Transcript

- 0:00There are some rooms we often overlook
- 0:02because they're easy to forget. Out of
- 0:04sight, out of mind, not important. One
- 0:07of these is the powder room, or as many
- 0:09call it, the half bath. What most people
- 0:12don't realize is that a redesigned
- 0:14bathroom can change your entire home's
- 0:16personality. Today, I'm going to show
- 0:18you how we did that, the thought process
- 0:21behind it, and how you can apply the
- 0:23same thinking in your bathroom.
- 0:25Remember, if you would like our help in
- 0:27designing your room, you can have that
- 0:30help by clicking the link in the
- 0:32description below. This is the bathroom
- 0:35that our client Craig originally sent
- 0:37us. Does it look familiar to you?
- 0:39Probably. The style has been reproduced
- 0:41in tens of thousands, if not hundreds of
- 0:44thousands of bathrooms across North
- 0:47America. Why? Because it's safe. Is it
- 0:50clean? Yes. Is it functional? Yes. Is it
- 0:54forgettable? Yes. Technically speaking,
- 0:57there is nothing wrong here. There's
- 0:59also nothing right. It neither adds nor
- 1:02subtracts from the home. It simply
- 1:04exists. It is a fine example of the
- 1:07prison of neutral, a stripping of any
- 1:09hope for impact. Why is it ignored? Why
- 1:12do people not change it? Why are so many
- 1:14bathrooms created this way then remain
- 1:17so for 10 years? Well, some people don't
- 1:20know how to approach it. Others may
- 1:22think if nothing is broken, don't fix
- 1:24it. That principle has merit in many
- 1:26things. In this scenario, you might want
- 1:29to reconsider. Imagine dropping your
- 1:32vehicle off for an oil change. Not just
- 1:34any vehicle, your crown jewel, the
- 1:36exotic, the performance sports car, the
- 1:39classic antique that you sourced and
- 1:42restored. The mechanic asks, "Which type
- 1:44of oil would you like us to use?" You
- 1:46respond, "What are my options?" Well, he
- 1:49says, "We have standard and we have
- 1:51premium. Standard is what most customers
- 1:54get. Premium is for those of us who want
- 1:56to tap into the engine's full
- 1:58potential." You point and say, "Premium
- 2:01seems like the right choice." See, it
- 2:03wasn't that the lesser of the two would
- 2:05stop you from driving the vehicle.
- 2:07Either would allow you to get from point
- 2:09A to point B. It's the desire to
- 2:12experience the full character of the car
- 2:15to have it perform at its best. It can
- 2:18now be the vehicle that creates
- 2:19memories, leaves an impression, and has
- 2:22an identity. So, when you walk by your
- 2:24powder room and compare it to the rest
- 2:26of your home, ask yourself, am I putting
- 2:29lowgrade effort into a high potential
- 2:31space? Let's take a look at what a
- 2:33proper amount of attention can do.
- 2:35Treating the space like a destination
- 2:37rather than a utility closet. In small
- 2:40rooms, walls are your greatest asset.
- 2:43You don't have the space to use filler
- 2:45as a crutch. So, every surface has to
- 2:48contribute. Here, the walls pull a lot
- 2:51of weight. The wallpaper is contributing
- 2:53to identity. The paneling adds
- 2:55architecture. That deep heritage green
- 2:58paint builds atmosphere, and the warm
- 3:01bronze and gold accents are the touch of
- 3:03refinement. There's breathing room, but
- 3:06no portion looks flat. That's why the
- 3:08room feels rich without a sense of busy.
- 3:11Quality design, in my eyes, is built on
- 3:14controlled contrast. You can see what's
- 3:16happening here. White toilet against
- 3:18dark walls, dark vanity against
- 3:20patterned wallpaper, brass against
- 3:23green, marble against wood, a geometric
- 3:26floor against an organic illustrative
- 3:28wallpaper. These are longived classic
- 3:32fundamentals. light versus dark, old
- 3:34versus new, pattern versus solid while
- 3:37keeping balance intact so that nothing
- 3:40dominates. It is the active pursuit of
- 3:43discipline that leads to these timeless
- 3:45spaces. You'll notice nothing here is
- 3:47random. There's a clear visual hierarchy
- 3:49occurring. The wallpaper and paneling
- 3:51are where everything begins, where your
- 3:54understanding of the room's impression
- 3:56is formed. Then the mirror and lighting
- 3:59pull focus. that leads you to the horse
- 4:01sculpture which is a special juncture in
- 4:04itself. [snorts]
- 4:05After that your eyes for the first time
- 4:08actively recognize the teakwood vanity
- 4:11grounding the room. Then finally the
- 4:13flooring completes the journey. What I
- 4:16just described is likely the pathway
- 4:18your eyes and mind took when this
- 4:20bathroom first appeared on the screen.
- 4:23This visual pathway is a written story.
- 4:26There's a leadin. There's a buildup. a
- 4:29peak point of interest and then resolve.
- 4:32This is using architectural thinking in
- 4:34your approach. A higher thought process
- 4:36than surface level styling. One of the
- 4:39most important decisions used here is
- 4:42geometry. Look at the floor. Diamond
- 4:44pattern. Now look at the wallpaper.
- 4:47Diamond lattice. Different eras,
- 4:49subjects, and colors, but same
- 4:52structure. That shared geometry gives
- 4:54your brain permission to accept both
- 4:57elements together. When you want to
- 4:59combine things that shouldn't work
- 5:01together, you can extend an olive branch
- 5:04between them by structure and pattern
- 5:07alignment. The horse bus was a great
- 5:10find. It feels like it has no truer
- 5:12place in the world, like it has always
- 5:14been there and wasn't added in later.
- 5:17The finish is aged, and that works well
- 5:20because if it weren't somewhat muted, it
- 5:22would run the risk of calling too much
- 5:24attention to itself. It's large enough
- 5:26to be noticed, but not so large that the
- 5:29entire bathroom simply becomes a stage
- 5:32for the sculpture. Placed here, it has
- 5:35the appearance of collected art that has
- 5:37found the perfect home and eliminates
- 5:39any impression of a decorative prop.
- 5:42Here is something seldom covered besides
- 5:45bits and pieces I might mention in some
- 5:47of our videos. That is how colors travel
- 5:50through a room. Think of this as a river
- 5:53whose pathway gradually narrows becoming
- 5:56a stream then creek eventually ending in
- 5:59a final pool where its travels end.
- 6:02Colors in a room can be organized to do
- 6:04the same. A large presence of white
- 6:07begins at the floor. It narrows to the
- 6:09toilet, becomes smaller at the
- 6:11countertop, trickles into the wallpaper,
- 6:14and then it exits. Black rises from the
- 6:17floor, travels into the bus sculpture at
- 6:19top the sink. softens into the
- 6:21wallpaper, fades completely. Shades of
- 6:24brown and honey fall from the chandelier
- 6:27to the wallpaper to the frames and
- 6:30settle into the vanity. Heritage green
- 6:33is extracted from the wallpaper, expands
- 6:35into the walls, and that builds a secure
- 6:38atmosphere. This is a flowing system of
- 6:42color that leads to cohesion. Most
- 6:45equestrian rooms revolve around
- 6:47Victorian influences, things like fox
- 6:50hunting and country estates. Leisure
- 6:53born out of the 1700s. We went further
- 6:56back. This wallpaper references medieval
- 6:58imagery from the 1400s. Symbolism that
- 7:02has lasted for centuries, in turn,
- 7:04making the room feel even more stable. A
- 7:07deeper lineage, a bit more serious and
- 7:09less expected when dealing with
- 7:11equestrian design. We did however mix a
- 7:15little bit of the hunt into this design.
- 7:18The bus sculpture on the sink is not
- 7:20random. This is Diana, the Roman goddess
- 7:23of the hunt, wild animals and the
- 7:25natural world. Beyond that, this
- 7:27sculpture was originally a red wine
- 7:30bottle from Mona de Marchiala in Italy.
- 7:33It had a life before this room with its
- 7:35credibility and history. This is art.
- 7:38Regardless of the theme you choose to go
- 7:40with, being considerate of your
- 7:43additions gives you the opportunity to
- 7:45create a layered narrative, pieces tied
- 7:48through meaning and not solely
- 7:50cosmetics. This bathroom redesign proves
- 7:54something important, and it's applicable
- 7:56to much more than just powder rooms. You
- 7:58don't need a bigger house or a full
- 8:01structural renovation or a massive
- 8:03budget. What you need is a bit of
- 8:06direction, a sharpening of your already
- 8:08good taste, and the commitment to see it
- 8:12through. Remember, four cornerstones in
- 8:15creating your room of integrity.
- 8:17Repetition, transition, anchoring, and
- 8:21reference. If you like the video, hit
- 8:24the thumbs up. If you feel like sticking
- 8:25around a while, feel free to subscribe.
- 8:28See you on the next one.
