6. 0:14channels for smuggling have morphed into

9. 0:20beneath the surface but what is their
10. 0:23impact on the tactics of both sides and
11. 0:25what is Israel doing to take them out of
12. 0:28the fight discovering the vast network
13. 0:30of tunnels under Gaza immediately raises
14. 0:33the question how long did it take to
15. 0:35build such an extensive system the
16. 0:37answer is not a simple one reflecting
17. 0:40years of secret construction the first
18. 0:42recorded tunnel in Gaza was discovered
19. 0:44in
20. 0:451983 from the 80s to the early 2000s the
21. 0:49tunnels in the Gaza Strip were primarily
22. 0:51used for smuggling goods and people
23. 0:53across the borders of both Egypt and
24. 0:55Israel while initially made to bypass
25. 0:57sanctions and for economic benefit when
26. 1:00Hamas took power in 2006 the tunnels
27. 1:03began to be used for more evil purposes
28. 1:06over the years Hamas has expanded its
29. 1:08vast tunnel network from smuggling
30. 1:10routes to underground complexes inside
31. 1:13these literal underground highways our
32. 1:16Command and control centers hospitals
33. 1:18bunk rooms stor rooms and more all of
34. 1:21which have electricity running through
35. 1:22them and are concrete fortified several
36. 1:25main arteries feed into smaller tunnels
37. 1:27that Branch off to individual openings
38. 1:29known as the Gaza Metro these tunnels
39. 1:32allow fighters to move without fear of
40. 1:34being spotted but even though snuffing
41. 1:36out these tunnels seems daunting with
42. 1:38the Gaza Strip being so tiny they should
43. 1:41be easy to find right unfortunately that
44. 1:43is not the case as previous conflicts
45. 1:46and the current one have shown Hamas

47. 1:50its tunnel entrances Hamas prefers to
48. 1:53put them inside civilian homes hospitals
49. 1:56schools and mosques they also hide them
50. 1:59in Ditches chicken coops and other
51. 2:01places that seem inconspicuous and
52. 2:03ordinary because of this Israeli troops
53. 2:06have to be extremely cautious wherever
54. 2:08they're advancing should they
55. 2:09accidentally miss a Hamas hideout in
56. 2:12fact reports from the battlefield have
57. 2:14shown this to be true there have been
58. 2:16several documented cases of Hamas
59. 2:18Fighters appearing far behind the front

61. 2:23days or weeks before these attacks
62. 2:25naturally slow operations down to a
63. 2:27snail's pace to allow for finding and
64. 2:30destroying tunnel entrances but how has
65. 2:32Israel destroyed tunnels in the past in
66. 2:35previous conflicts in the Gaza Strip
67. 2:37Israel has used several tried andrue
68. 2:40methods of wiping out tunnels the first
69. 2:42of these is the americanmade GB u28 also
70. 2:46known as the bunker Buster first
71. 2:49unveiled during the Persian Gulf War
72. 2:51this specially made bomb is perfect for
73. 2:53taking out concrete hardened command
74. 2:55posts and bunkers buried far beneath the
75. 2:57earth's surface how theom bombs carry
76. 3:00out this task is through one of two ways
77. 3:02firstly the bomb is hardened more so
78. 3:05than an ordinary bomb and is equipped
79. 3:07with a time delayed fuse once the bomb
80. 3:10penetrates the Earth time delay fuse
81. 3:12ensures that the bomb breaks into
82. 3:14whatever it was intended to destroy
83. 3:16before detonating other versions of the
84. 3:18bomb include a tandem Warhead this means

97. 3:49tunnels and build entrances underneath
98. 3:51and inside civilian homes hospitals
99. 3:54schools and other sensitive sites Hamas
100. 3:57is banking on the fact that Israel would
101. 4:00use such weapons to take out these
102. 4:02tunnels though the GB u28 would achieve
103. 4:05this effect it would have the unintended
104. 4:07consequence of huge civilian casualties
105. 4:10as a result Israel has steered away from
106. 4:12the mass use of Bunker Buster bombs and
107. 4:15has in the past used several other tried
108. 4:17andr methods whenever Israeli infantry
109. 4:20Advanced before they would identify and
110. 4:22Mark tunnel entrances as they went by
111. 4:25combat engineers would quickly follow to
112. 4:27seal off the entrances with several
113. 4:29methods the first of these methods was
114. 4:31to Simply blow the entrance up with
115. 4:33explosives the second way was to bulldo
116. 4:36the earth into it the last way Engineers
117. 4:39would destroy it was through pouring
118. 4:40concrete into the tunnel but while all
119. 4:43these methods are F during limited
120. 4:45combat operations they are less suitable
121. 4:47during the current high-intensity
122. 4:49conflict additionally Hamas has been
123. 4:51hardening its tunnel systems for years
124. 4:53to combat these tactics because tunnels
125. 4:56have numerous entrances and exits simply
126. 4:59seing steing off one doesn't guarantee

144. 5:39publicly about these devices but media
145. 5:42reports claim that it is a grenade likee
146. 5:44explosive device that when it explodes
147. 5:47sprays foam everywhere in a short amount
148. 5:49of time this foam hardens to create a
149. 5:52wall that renders the tunnel sealed
150. 5:54though there has been no confirmed video
151. 5:56or picture evidence of this being used
152. 5:58so far Israeli officers have talked
153. 6:01about how they're tactically employing
154. 6:03it called the purple hair in Israeli
155. 6:05military circles troops will throw a
156. 6:07small grenade into a tunnel quickly
157. 6:09followed by a sponge bomb the sponge
158. 6:12bomb will quickly seal the entrance and
159. 6:13force the smoke into the tunnel where
160. 6:15troops can see where it's coming from to
161. 6:17see what other entrances need to get
162. 6:19taken out Israeli Special Forces are

174. 6:47success yet photographed evidence from
175. 6:49the battlefield proves Israel is using
176. 6:51attack dogs to find and eliminate
177. 6:54terrorists but even with these new tools
178. 6:56and taking out tunnels the hardest part
179. 6:59is finding them after all Israeli troops
180. 7:02don't want to know where a tunnel is
181. 7:03located because they took fire from one
182. 7:06they would rather know well ahead of
183. 7:07time and take it out before Hamas
184. 7:09Fighters can launch ambushes from them
185. 7:12and thankfully for them Israel has
186. 7:14several creative ways to find them one
187. 7:16of these ways has been through drone
188. 7:18surveillance while aerial drones are
189. 7:20certainly used for surveillance using
190. 7:22them to determine patterns of life and
191. 7:24estimate where tunnels are located is a
192. 7:27new way of finding them because Israel
193. 7:29has few human assets on the ground for
194. 7:32intelligence aerial drones are the next
195. 7:34best thing to observe Hamas Fighters at
196. 7:36all times they look for things that are
197. 7:39not ordinary a group of guys going into
198. 7:41a building and not leaving for days

200. 7:45all hours of the day and night or
201. 7:48perhaps someone coming from a chicken C
202. 7:49at 2:00 in the morning are all examples
203. 7:52of suspicious behavior that Israel

227. 8:48science in finding terrorist tunnels but
228. 8:50what does the future look like in taking

232. 8:59instead troops use drones and robots
