- 0:00Well, that heel bulb does not look
- 0:02right, but I think we all know by now
- 0:04that is not where it started. Right down
- 0:06here, that's where the problem lies.
- 0:09Welcome back to Nate the Hoof Guy.
- 0:19Dry environments create dry hooves.
- 0:21That's why this one sounds a little
- 0:23crunchy.
- 0:35You probably noticed by now that when
- 0:36I'm trimming up a hoof, I'll often times
- 0:39remove far less from the claw opposing
- 0:41the problem than I do the one with it
- 0:43just because I want to make sure that
- 0:45that one has as much hoof horn on it so
- 0:47I can adjust that later on whether it be
- 0:49with a block or without a block if I
- 0:51don't need one. So, I'm going to take
- 0:53off more from this problem area and
- 0:55leave that other claw basically
- 0:56untouched.
- 1:07If you couldn't see that original flaw
- 1:08at the beginning, it's a little bit
- 1:09easier to see now.
- 1:11This area here between the mark in the
- 1:13sole and that heel bulb is what needs to
- 1:15go.
- 1:22I need to work my knife carefully
- 1:23through this hoof horn. Too much
- 1:24pressure and it'll zip right through.
- 1:37The wall horn is much tougher than that
- 1:39solar horn, so you have to be measured
- 1:41with your strokes.
- 2:08>> This hoof horn is made up of keratin,
- 2:10just like our fingernails, only
- 2:11obviously a lot thicker. So, it's a
- 2:13little bit more difficult to cut
- 2:15through, especially that wall horn. You
- 2:17just got to work your way, like I said,
- 2:18carefully through that with measured
- 2:20pressure, so it doesn't zip right
- 2:22through.
- 2:36While many of you may be watching this
- 2:38in the evening, that rooster is telling
- 2:40you that it's morning when I'm doing
- 2:42this trimming.
- 3:02Using the hook of that knife, I'm able
- 3:03to pull that hoof horn away from me and
- 3:05away from that hoof as I make that cut.
- 3:08It's a lot safer that way.
- 3:32What started out as a simple white line
- 3:34issue, now has digital dermatitis
- 3:36colonized on this sole. So, we're going
- 3:38to get a block on that other claw, and
- 3:40we're going to get that all cleaned out
- 3:41and wrapped with salicylic acid. A lot
- 3:43of questions I get have to do with is
- 3:45the salicylic [snorts]
- 3:46acid necessary? And to take care of a
- 3:49white line issue, no, it's not. However,
- 3:52a lot of times bacteria can be present
- 3:54there that we obviously cannot see with
- 3:57the naked eye. So, if we don't happen to
- 4:00treat that with salicylic acid, that
- 4:02colonization can happen, and then that
- 4:04claw won't produce new hoof horn that
- 4:06she needs. You can see right along these
- 4:08edges, that's new hoof horn there, but
- 4:10in between all of that is the
- 4:12dermatitis. Still got to do some work
- 4:13along this edge, and then we're going to
- 4:15be able to get it flushed out and get
- 4:17that salicylic acid treatment in place.
- 4:37Want to try and remove as many of these
- 4:38little folds as I can. If we don't,
- 4:41debris can get packed up in behind that,
- 4:43and then the bacteria can live in there,
- 4:45and we have problems, right? Now I'm
- 4:47able to remove all of that, then I can
- 4:49get it flushed really well.
- 4:51That way that there's no room for
- 4:52anything to hide in there, and my
- 4:54salicylic acid can get placed directly
- 4:56on top of that area, which is what I
- 4:58want. If I leave a little bit of fold of
- 5:00hoof horn in there, I can't get that
- 5:02powder in where it needs to be.
- 5:04Now that we've got that hoof horn away,
- 5:06I'm going to put some powder on top,
- 5:07then I'll take some salicylic acid
- 5:09powder on my cotton gauze, put that on
- 5:12there, and then we'll get it wrapped up.
- 5:14And then we'll let her out and see how
- 5:15she's walking with that wrap and block
- 5:17on.
- 5:22Even though you didn't get to see her
- 5:23walking in, take my word for it, she's
- 5:25walking much better now.
