- 0:00I uncovered this about hair loss
- 0:01personally, kind of the hard way.
- 0:03There's a compound that can actually
- 0:04block the exact same enzyme as the hair
- 0:07loss drug finasteride, and it's in a
- 0:09fruit that there's a very good chance
- 0:11you had some of this morning. This
- 0:12particular fruit has 44 times more of
- 0:16this hair loss prevention compound than
- 0:18any other fruit in the produce section.
- 0:2044 times. It's the avocado. And we're
- 0:22going to talk about how to use it and
- 0:23why it works, but I'm also going to talk
- 0:25about what you can combine it with
- 0:27because knowing that it's an avocado
- 0:29doesn't change things, right? Like maybe
- 0:30you had a little avocado with your eggs
- 0:31and it's not like your hair magically
- 0:32started growing. But nobody's really
- 0:34talking about avocado this way because
- 0:36everyone's just kind of stuck on the
- 0:37healthy fats thing, which is great.
- 0:38Avocados are great, but a half of an
- 0:40avocado per day could literally be one
- 0:43of the most powerful foods for holding
- 0:45on to your hair. I mean, I'm not saying
- 0:46that it's going to beat pharmaceuticals,
- 0:48but I am saying when it comes to foods,
- 0:50it does have power. So I'm going to show
- 0:51you why. I'm going to talk about how
- 0:52much you need, and then I'm going to
- 0:54talk about how to build it into one
- 0:55particular like food combination that
- 0:58hits your hair follicles from two
- 0:59different directions at once. So let's
- 1:01start with the enemy. The most common
- 1:03form of hair loss in men and women is
- 1:05driven by a hormone called
- 1:07dihydrotestosterone, DHT. Now your body
- 1:09makes DHT by running testosterone
- 1:11through an enzyme called 5-alpha
- 1:14reductase. In follicles that are
- 1:16genetically sensitive to it, DHT,
- 1:19dihydrotestosterone, slowly shrinks the
- 1:21follicle year after year until the hair
- 1:23gets thinner and thinner and shorter and
- 1:25shorter and eventually stops growing,
- 1:26falls out. That's the whole thing in one
- 1:28sentence, right? So too much
- 1:29testosterone, too much DHT at a
- 1:31sensitive follicle over time. That's
- 1:33male pattern baldness, but it happens to
- 1:34women too. So the way you fight it is
- 1:36you block that enzyme. You slow the
- 1:38conversion of testosterone into DHT and
- 1:41you slow the drainage, like you slow
- 1:43down that damage. That is the whole
- 1:45point behind things like finasteride and
- 1:47dutasteride. They inhibit 5-alpha
- 1:49reductase. The avocado comes in because
- 1:52it actually has interesting compounds
- 1:55that work on this. Now I first learned
- 1:57about this because I was taking a
- 1:59compound called
- 2:00Ali. I've talked about it before. Maybe
- 2:02you've heard Huberman talk about it.
- 2:03It's very real. It jacked my
- 2:05testosterone up so fast, and it was
- 2:07great. Libido is through the roof. My
- 2:09lifts were amazing. I was putting on
- 2:11muscle more than I normally did in a
- 2:13deficit. It was powerful. It worked. It
- 2:15worked so well, and evidently the dose
- 2:17was too high that I was taking that I
- 2:19actually noticed my hair was thinning.
- 2:20So I started going into the research,
- 2:22and I almost took finasteride, and then
- 2:24I learned about how I could do it with
- 2:26food. I quickly changed my diet. I added
- 2:28more avocado back in, and I did notice a
- 2:30difference. Now, I also reduced my dose
- 2:32of Tongkat Ali because I realized I
- 2:34didn't need as much. I also ended up
- 2:36switching to a better brand that I think
- 2:38had less like byproduct in it. So the
- 2:39one I use now, just FYI if you're
- 2:41curious, it's called Row Nutrition. It's
- 2:43actually a liquid Tongkat Ali, and it's
- 2:45in a liposome. So I was concerned that
- 2:47maybe Tongkat Ali, since it's so
- 2:49powerful at improving like the release
- 2:51of testosterone from sex hormone binding
- 2:52globulin and it's got it works on a
- 2:54couple of different axes. It's very very
- 2:55powerful. Again, we've seen the research
- 2:57with it, but sometimes it can be like
- 2:59not that pure, and maybe you're getting
- 3:01just weird effects from it. So the
- 3:02Tongkat Ali from Row is very pure. It's
- 3:04good quality, and it's in a liposomal
- 3:06form, so you're getting better delivery,
- 3:08better absorption of it. Liposome means
- 3:10the Tongkat Ali molecule is protected by
- 3:12a phospholipid bilayer so it becomes fat
- 3:14soluble so you get potentially better
- 3:16absorption with it, and it works. It's
- 3:17cool. It's in a liquid form. Anyway, not
- 3:19to go off on a tangent, but I put that
- 3:20link down below. That's also a 20% off
- 3:22code, delauer20, if you want to try it
- 3:24out. Careful, it actually works. Okay,
- 3:26so you don't need much of it. Not to
- 3:27digress too much, that's a great
- 3:28product, great company. Okay, but
- 3:29avocados have a plant compound in them
- 3:33that are called beta sitosterols. Beta
- 3:36sitosterol inhibits 5-alpha reductase.
- 3:38It's a different pathway from
- 3:40finasteride, but it inhibits the same
- 3:41enzyme. So it's the same target that
- 3:43these drugs are going after. It's just a
- 3:44food doing it, and I will always go to
- 3:46food first. The mechanism is very well
- 3:48documented. The amount sitting in an
- 3:51avocado is you can't ignore it. There's
- 3:53a lot. And like how much beta sitosterol
- 3:55are you actually getting? Well, there's
- 3:56a compositional analysis in the journal
- 3:59of the American Dietetic Association,
- 4:01and the number is wildly high for a
- 4:02fruit. A single avocado has about 132
- 4:05milligrams of beta sitosterol. Most
- 4:08fruits and vegetables and other foods,
- 4:10they give you about three, right? That's
- 4:11about 44 times more than most other
- 4:14foods. So it puts a whole avocado in
- 4:17about the same range as a dedicated
- 4:19phytosterol supplement, like going out
- 4:21and buying a powder that's supposed to
- 4:23be good for this. I would much rather
- 4:24eat an avocado. But what makes this
- 4:25practical is that you actually don't
- 4:26even need a whole avocado. Like a half
- 4:28of an avocado still gives you about 60
- 4:30milligrams of beta sitosterol, which is
- 4:32a serious dose for a food. So this whole
- 4:34thing was never about eating a bunch of
- 4:35avocado by the bowl. It was more about
- 4:37consistency. So what we need is about
- 4:39half of an avocado per day consistently.
- 4:42Now there's also another bonus that
- 4:43comes with eating the avocado instead of
- 4:45like a phytosterol pill. Avocados,
- 4:46particular fats, these oleic acid, they
- 4:49carry their own phytosterols across your
- 4:51gut wall. So the compounds like the beta
- 4:54sitosterol in the fruit absorb better in
- 4:58the same dose than they would in a dry
- 5:00supplement because they get carried in
- 5:02because of these actual phytosterols in
- 5:04the avocado itself. So the fat and the
- 5:06sterol come prepackaged together, which
- 5:08is how your body wants to absorb it. But
- 5:10before you go all in on avocado, there's
- 5:12actually another food that we can use.
- 5:14I've done other videos on this. Pumpkin
- 5:15seeds, but combining them is cool
- 5:17because they hit the same enzyme, the 5
- 5:19alpha reductase, but through a different
- 5:20class of sterols, the delta 7 sterols.
- 5:22So now you're working two different
- 5:24pathways at the same target. So pumpkin
- 5:26seeds have the stronger direct human
- 5:28trial of the two. They actually have
- 5:29RCTs on them, like double blind placebo
- 5:31controlled study. There was one of like
- 5:32over 70 men with hair loss. They took
- 5:34pumpkin seed oil for 24 weeks and ended
- 5:37up with significantly more hair than the
- 5:38placebo did. So it works. But avocados
- 5:40work a different axis and there's just
- 5:42not a lot of human trials with it. So
- 5:43it's early, but hey, it's pretty damn
- 5:45safe to say go eat some avocado. Pumpkin
- 5:47seeds and avocados kind of go well
- 5:50together. It's kind of a cool thing.
- 5:51Avocados like direct hair evidence is
- 5:54not as strong as the pumpkin seeds. Like
- 5:56there's some small pilot trials that
- 5:58combine like beta sitosterol with other
- 6:00things and there's benefits, but it's
- 6:01just hard to like, I don't know, like
- 6:03distill the data. The mechanism is still
- 6:05very, very solid though, right? I'd
- 6:06rather you hear it from you from like an
- 6:08honest approach saying that, yeah, we
- 6:09need more human data, but it's still
- 6:10very solid. But here's why I'd still do
- 6:12it. The downside is basically zero.
- 6:14Okay, these are foods. You're hitting
- 6:16like the one enzyme from two different
- 6:18directions and you're working the same
- 6:20axis that we're targeting with
- 6:21pharmaceutical intervention, but with
- 6:23food. And you have two routes at the
- 6:24same target, beats leaning on one. And
- 6:26guess what? You're still getting
- 6:27vitamins and minerals and benefits of
- 6:29eating pumpkin seeds and avocado anyway.
- 6:30If you have like half of an avocado,
- 6:32that's all you need for the beta
- 6:33sitosterol. Add like a small tablespoon
- 6:35handful maybe pumpkin seeds for the
- 6:37delta seven sterols and then build
- 6:38around that. So I would go with maybe
- 6:40like deep leafy greens. I would go with
- 6:42broccoli for the NRF 2, the
- 6:44sulforaphane, huge effect there
- 6:45beneficially from the diindolylmethane
- 6:47from DIM in avocado cruciferous
- 6:49vegetables that can help modulate
- 6:51estrogen metabolism. Testosterone and
- 6:53estrogen need to be in balance, right?
- 6:54So cruciferous vegetables with some
- 6:56avocado with some pumpkin seeds on a
- 6:58little salad with a little avocado oil,
- 7:00you're sitting in a pretty darn good
- 7:02spot. The cool thing is if you added
- 7:03some carrots or if you added some
- 7:04colorful foods, we actually see that
- 7:06avocados increase the absorption of
- 7:08carotenoids up to 15 times. So you
- 7:10actually absorb more nutrients from a
- 7:12salad with avocado on it than a salad
- 7:14without, period. Then you add your
- 7:15protein, add your eggs, whatever, right?
- 7:17You've got a muscle building bowl that's
- 7:18good for hair loss that also is having
- 7:21some huge benefits on absorbing the beta
- 7:22carotene. That's the whole point, like
- 7:24right? A salad that blocks DHT. I'm not
- 7:26even a big salad guy, but I say it like
- 7:27simply like right on the side. Like a
- 7:29salad that blocks DHT from two
- 7:30directions, multiplies the nutrients
- 7:32that you're eating, you pull them in and
- 7:34actually absorb them better, and protein
- 7:35to be genuinely anabolic. There you go.
- 7:37Like you're getting the absolute most
- 7:39you can. Have that salad a few times per
- 7:41week. Try to have the avocado every day
- 7:42if you can because the consistency is
- 7:44the entire game here. These are slow
- 7:47cumulative effects on the follicle, not
- 7:49something overnight. I have to repeat,
- 7:51cumulative effects are the most powerful
- 7:53way to impact the follicle. So half of
- 7:55an avocado pretty much every day is
- 7:57powerful, especially with the pumpkin
- 7:58seeds. So to bring it back home, make it
- 8:00simple. Hair loss driven by DHT. DHT is
- 8:03made by an enzyme and both avocado and
- 8:05pumpkin seeds slow that enzyme down,
- 8:07period. Avocado 44 times more of that
- 8:10THC blocking sterol than any other fruit
- 8:12and most other foods. So even though the
- 8:14evidence isn't like pharmaceutical
- 8:15level, and I honestly don't want to
- 8:17pretend that it is, the mechanism is
- 8:19what these pharmaceuticals are modeled
- 8:21after. It's very very real. Now I did
- 8:23another video that talks about an
- 8:25interesting way to combat tartar,
- 8:27cavities, and gingivitis, right? These
- 8:29are other weird things that come along
- 8:31with age and it's things that people
- 8:32don't necessarily like talk about. Like
- 8:35they know they're dealing with them, but
- 8:36it's a simple rinse that you can make
- 8:37with something that's probably in your
- 8:38pantry and it's backed by science cuz
- 8:39I'm just a nerd with a backwards hat
- 8:41that's trying to talk about cool things
- 8:43that food does. So anyway, that link is
- 8:45right here to that video. Check it out
- 8:46and I'll see you tomorrow.
