- 0:13I do feel like the house has a European sensibility.
- 0:17I'm certainly influenced by many Belgian and Flemish architects and
- 0:22designers, although I wouldn't say I was specifically going for that aesthetic.
- 0:28100%. I think it's just naturally part of my design sense.
- 0:36What I love about European design is that it doesn't feel that it can't be used.
- 0:41It doesn't feel that it can't be lived in.
- 0:42It exudes a lifestyle and that's definitely what my ethos is.
- 0:47I want to create beautiful environments that are equally livable and foster
- 0:51a beautiful and fun lifestyle.
- 0:58We love this neighborhood of Bonsall Canyon, and we like that pastoral
- 1:03vibe and the fact that we're completely private behind our gates.
- 1:06Once you get in here, it feels like a real compound.
- 1:11The lights always changing.
- 1:13The colors are always nuanced in different ways.
- 1:17Through that, it provides constant inspiration in a very dynamic way.
- 1:25The original home was built in the sixties.
- 1:27It was a post-and-beam ranch that had some really cool bones to it.
- 1:35There was a simplicity about it, which was interesting, but the
- 1:38focus was not indoor outdoor flow.
- 1:40Things were chopped up.
- 1:41It was much darker.
- 1:42So really aesthetically it's just night and day.
- 1:48We clad the exterior with the Shou Sugi Ban and furred out the
- 1:53exterior of the house, which allowed us to pocket these large doors.
- 1:57And then we cut the eaves back of the old home, which extended far beyond
- 2:01the openings and basically blocked this energy in this flow that we
- 2:06were certainly desirous of creating.
- 2:12One of the rooms that we gravitate towards all the time
- 2:14is the kitchen and family room.
- 2:16It's a combined space, and this is a new volume.
- 2:20This is the portion of the home that was added onto.
- 2:24It's been really successful.
- 2:26It's basically the nexus of.
- 2:28All of our activities, be it our family, parties and large groups,
- 2:32weekends, weekdays, nighttime, you name it, we love to hang out here.
- 2:36It connects to our yard and fire pit and outdoor living room, and the light is
- 2:41just beautiful, which you can probably get a bit of a notion of right now.
- 2:46And this is the prime spot in the house for all of our living.
- 2:55Many of the pieces in our home are custom designs that we make with fabricators
- 3:01locally, but of course, throughout the home there are some really special pieces
- 3:05that we collected along the way as well.
- 3:08We also have some.
- 3:09Items that I inherited from my parents.
- 3:13So there's other items of the home that are incredibly personal in that way,
- 3:18and then others, of course, that we just sourced specifically for this home.
- 3:22I go to Copenhagen once a year.
- 3:24I go to the Paris Flea markets whenever I can.
- 3:27And of course we have some amazing vendors and galleries here in Los Angeles and
- 3:32across the world that my firm works with.
- 3:34So I think we have a handful of collectible.
- 3:37Items that really add to the overall patina of the home and the timelessness.
- 3:45By mixing obviously old and new and things that are beautiful
- 3:49and have been for ages and ages,
- 3:54we were quite intentional about the way the home was designed and how it
- 4:01activates this indoor outdoor lifestyle that was paramount to us to connect to.
- 4:08I think the surprise, if anything, is just that we actually do use
- 4:13all of the rooms that are here, which sometimes is not the case.
- 4:18There's a room that you think, oh man, I should have done this or that.
- 4:21So I think that we did a good job at allocating spaces appropriately
- 4:26and really creating a home that we use each and every room that's here.
- 4:33I really am proud of this house.
- 4:35It is clearly a reflection of my personal aesthetic.
- 4:39It's a place where I can come home and, recharge, find beauty, find
- 4:45peace, clear my head, be inspired.
- 4:49And this home I hope, will be a constant source of that for me.
