- 0:00steam reviews are meant to inform users
- 0:01about the quality of games using
- 0:03feedback and information from the
- 0:05community itself from other gamers but
- 0:07recently steam reviews have gotten
- 0:09somewhat less useful it uses flooding
- 0:12them with negative reviews usually in
- 0:13protest that's something that they just
- 0:15don't like valve Alvers come up with a
- 0:17plan to clamp down on so-called review
- 0:20bombing without taking away the cliche
- 0:23it's before 11:00 it's funny when you go
- 0:26cuz I do it so often at least it's
- 0:28alright that I do it now because since
- 0:30you do it as well
- 0:31Sims right now valve has come up with a
- 0:33plan to cut down on so-called review
- 0:36bombing without taking away the
- 0:37consumers right to voice their opinion
- 0:39just the other day valve put out a
- 0:41statement on the future of steams
- 0:42reviews and what they will be doing to
- 0:44make the system better for everyone a
- 0:46big problem with steam reviews lately
- 0:47has been review bombing it's a term used
- 0:50to describe an influx of negative
- 0:51reviews which are usually centered
- 0:53around one particular issue for example
- 0:55GTA 5 was reviewed bombed when rockstar
- 0:58started to crack down on modding and
- 1:00issued a cease-and-desist to the makers
- 1:02of open for GTA's most popular modding
- 1:04tool it also happened to the publisher
- 1:06paradox which saw many of its games
- 1:08review bombed when it raised the prices
- 1:10of his products just before a Steam sale
- 1:12then there was dota 2 which got a review
- 1:14bombed because well how v 3 is now yeah
- 1:17last ones pretty bad is the line
- 1:19connecting dota 2 and half-life 3 not
- 1:22being released yet it's pretty weak
- 1:25people review BOMs dota 2 because half
- 1:28life 3 isnt out yet
- 1:29so what's finally spurred valve on to
- 1:32doing something about this well indeed
- 1:34walking simulator Firewatch got flooded
- 1:36with negative reviews last week when the
- 1:38game's creator Shonda vanaman spoke out
- 1:40against YouTube's biggest personality
- 1:42pewdiepie he fathered the MCA claim
- 1:44against pewdiepie is video featuring
- 1:46Firewatch his game after Puetz used the
- 1:48n-word during a live stream on the steam
- 1:51community forum valve employee old and
- 1:53crawl wrote a lengthy post about steam
- 1:54reviews and how a review bombing affects
- 1:56the steam platform crawl said review
- 1:58bombing is a problem because more often
- 2:00than not the users posting the negative
- 2:02reviews are expressing their thoughts
- 2:03about an issue which is outside of the
- 2:06game he gives the example of users
- 2:07disagreeing with something a developer
- 2:09said online or they don't approve
- 2:11that developers political convictions
- 2:12valve believes that review bombing for
- 2:14issues like these aren't relevant to the
- 2:16game itself and it might put people off
- 2:17buying a game because it's had an impact
- 2:19on the overall review score so they're
- 2:21saying the overall review score might be
- 2:23inaccurate or on representative of the
- 2:25game itself but at the same time valve
- 2:28doesn't want a sense of people or their
- 2:29opinions either it doesn't like doing
- 2:31anything at all apparently so what is
- 2:33valve solution to this problem well they
- 2:35added a chart it's a pre choice very
- 2:37very functional that's like says a good
- 2:39chart the chart or histogram is valve
- 2:43call it well let users look at the
- 2:45history of users of reviews and it will
- 2:47show how the reviews have changed over
- 2:48time so if a game has mostly positive
- 2:50reviews at launch but then users decides
- 2:53a review bomber game later on then the
- 2:55chart will show this according to chrome
- 2:57valve entertained a few different
- 2:58options such as putting a temporary
- 3:00block on reviews and changing the
- 3:02algorithm which dictates the review
- 3:04score which is a shittest idea ever
- 3:06so just wants a vent but valve thought
- 3:08this would be problematic because it
- 3:10would effectively be censorship over
- 3:12user opinions or the review score
- 3:14wouldn't be representative of the game
- 3:15so they celled on using the bar chart
- 3:18which would allow potential buyers to
- 3:19easily identify fluctuations in reviews
- 3:22and they can investigate for themselves
- 3:24what caused the fluctuation valve do
- 3:26concede that it will require more effort
- 3:28from the potential buyer by the end of
- 3:30the day it's probably the most elegant
- 3:32solution to an otherwise tricky problem
- 3:34are you disagree with that it's not the
- 3:36most elegant solution because you're
- 3:37adding yet another thing to an already
- 3:39pretty complicated review system finally
- 3:42you've got recent rating you've got
- 3:43overall rating you've got this several
- 3:46different ways of filtering and ordering
- 3:48the different reviews to see the ones
- 3:51that you're interested in seeing and
- 3:53then on top of that you've got a chart
- 3:54now that you can look at and go through
- 3:56the history of all that stuff to see
- 3:58what's changed over time
- 3:59I like the idea because I mean I I'm
- 4:02very informed I can part with my money I
- 4:04don't know all the information at my
- 4:06disposal and add in this extra bit of
- 4:08information which is what it is on top
- 4:10of all the other loads of information it
- 4:12can be useful provided that you
- 4:14interpret it in the correct way of
- 4:15course the problem with this might be
- 4:17that there might be a legitimate reason
- 4:18for these relief omens that is game
- 4:20itself has gone worse or something's bad
- 4:22about the game but that doesn't show
- 4:24in the graph see and that's where you
- 4:26know you have to do a little bit more
- 4:27research on top of the graph so that's
- 4:29what the problem is yeah I think for me
- 4:30is fundamentally just classic valve this
- 4:32valve coming up with a solution that
- 4:34isn't really a solution and expecting
- 4:36the gamer to do all the heavy lifting
- 4:37and they're not having to do anything
- 4:39they've just given you another tool to
- 4:40work with and it's all on you you've got
- 4:42to do the investigating yourselves I
- 4:44don't think the developers are happy
- 4:45with this and from what I've read anyway
- 4:47so far they nobody seems to be like yes
- 4:49finally this fixes the problem what it
- 4:51does is it just kind of shows that a
- 4:54review bomb has happened and that's it
- 4:57basically it's just kind of a cuz it
- 4:58makes it clear having said that they are
- 5:00in a bit of a tricky situation because
- 5:02they're the biggest kind of PC platform
- 5:04holder they've got millions and millions
- 5:06of users and they've got huge
- 5:07responsibilities and they're trapped
- 5:08between when mobs of gamers kind of do
- 5:10something and then that is it
- 5:12against the developer the developer
- 5:13doesn't like that so then there's these
- 5:14two parties that this theme has to kind
- 5:16of keep happy it's really difficult for
- 5:18them to come up without obviously
- 5:19developers don't like it because watch
- 5:21everything they say these days yeah fear
- 5:23of being reviewed bombed which I don't
- 5:25know where there's a good about thing I
- 5:27mean I you know strongly agree with
- 5:29users having the avenue of you know a
- 5:31child let their frustrations when
- 5:33something like gta5 bands of mod in the
- 5:36open for morning talk they review on the
- 5:38shower that and then responded they got
- 5:40a positive response from it so it can't
- 5:43be used for good but it can also be used
- 5:45for people just having different
- 5:47opinions which again that's the problem
- 5:48isn't it the community reaction has been
- 5:50pretty warm apparently though they're
- 5:52they're quite happy with this idea and I
- 5:53guess you know that probably thinking
- 5:55what you say in just then guys another
- 5:56tall is that people who are involved all
- 5:58their games like just more information I
- 6:00guess and it's there for them now
- 6:01they've got a history and a track record
- 6:03of the reviews and they can see that
- 6:05reviews are positive at launch and then
- 6:06you know it's held often and suddenly
- 6:08there's a huge explosion in negative
- 6:09reviews I wonder what caused that that
- 6:11information is is there for them at
- 6:13least now and they can they can check
- 6:14that out so a lot of people love the
- 6:15community themselves are happy about
- 6:17that so what do you think guys is this
- 6:19the best solution to fix this review
- 6:21bombing problem is that a problem at all
- 6:22there's no down in the comments below
- 6:24like the video for me Julia subscribe if
- 6:26you're new run here is another video for
- 6:28you to watch roundabout here on your
- 6:29screen support some patient if you're
- 6:31awesome and we'll see again in the next
- 6:32video until then bye for now
