- 0:00cars are one of the best interests to
- 0:02have whether you're into racing them
- 0:04modifying them or making sweet sweet
- 0:06love to them they can improve your life
- 0:08massively they give you something to get
- 0:10excited about and to bond with people
- 0:12over but there's a lot of basic
- 0:14knowledge that's needed when talking
- 0:15about them that's why it can feel
- 0:17overwhelming when you talk to someone
- 0:18who's actually knowledgeable and of
- 0:20course you don't want them to know
- 0:21you're an idiot so you just nod your
- 0:23head and pretend you know what an 8
- 0:25liter quad turbo w16 with dct means
- 0:28while you get so annoyed that you start
- 0:30to think about plunging a knife right
- 0:32into their jugular and watching them
- 0:34gradually slump into a puddle of their
- 0:36own blood well lucky for them i'm gonna
- 0:38teach you what those terms mean so you
- 0:40can follow along in the conversation
- 0:42like a normal person instead of just
- 0:44thinking about murdering them and really
- 0:46there's not much to it so this video
- 0:48will cover everything you need to know
- 0:49to have a real car conversation once you
- 0:52understand things like the engine types
- 0:54transmissions and drivetrains you can
- 0:56start to form your opinions about cars
- 0:58which makes you interesting to talk to
- 1:00and even if you already know the basics
- 1:02about cars i'll be throwing in some
- 1:04facts that even seasoned car nerds don't
- 1:06know so you can really trick people into
- 1:08thinking you're an expert and we should
- 1:10really start by talking about the basic
- 1:12layout all cars have an engine a
- 1:14transmission and a drivetrain which is
- 1:17everything that you need to make the car
- 1:19go unless of course you're driving a
- 1:21ford in which case you'll be pushing
- 1:22most of the time so that'll just add
- 1:24weight but in general these components
- 1:26are blended together in a multitude of
- 1:28ways to create anything from a honda
- 1:30civic to an f-150 to a bugatti now let's
- 1:33take a look at the engine and the first
- 1:35thing you need to know is that how it
- 1:37works isn't actually that important you
- 1:39can just think of it like a fleshlight
- 1:40because you should think about what it
- 1:42does for you and not what's going on
- 1:43inside while you're using it all you
- 1:45need to know is that there are cylinders
- 1:47with a piston that pumps up and down air
- 1:49and fuel goes in combustion occurs and
- 1:51that creates a force which is used to
- 1:52move the car if you want to take that
- 1:54red pill and actually see how an engine
- 1:56works you can just look it up there's a
- 1:58ton of videos and it's really not that
- 2:00complicated the real thing that you
- 2:02should know is the basic notation so
- 2:04when you see something like this you
- 2:05should be able to tell what kind of
- 2:07engine it has and it's actually pretty
- 2:09easy so the first thing to look at is
- 2:11actually the last number here which
- 2:13tells you how many cylinders the engine
- 2:15has this is the most important
- 2:16information since it tells you a lot
- 2:18about the character of the car for
- 2:20example something small cheap and light
- 2:22like a honda civic will almost always
- 2:24have four cylinders while something
- 2:26faster and sportier like a corvette or a
- 2:28mustang will have eight and a bugatti
- 2:30can have up to 16 cylinders and now that
- 2:32we know how many cylinders the engine
- 2:34has we can look at the letter next to it
- 2:36which tells us the layout of those
- 2:38cylinders in this example the v tells
- 2:40you that the engine actually looks like
- 2:42a v shape the cylinders are divided into
- 2:45two separate banks which face each other
- 2:47at roughly a 90 degree angle probably
- 2:50the most common engine layout is the eye
- 2:52shape which also means inline or
- 2:54straight basically every single four
- 2:56cylinder is an inline or straight four
- 2:59and bmw chooses to use inline sixes over
- 3:02the more common v6 the next important
- 3:05engine layout to see is denoted by an h
- 3:08or an f subaru and porsche use this
- 3:10engine layout for most of their cars
- 3:12because it allows you to keep the weight
- 3:14lower to get better handling in this
- 3:16engine layout two banks of cylinders sit
- 3:19flat opposing each other on the same
- 3:21plane in that way the letter h actually
- 3:23represents how the engine looks which
- 3:25cannot be said for the w engine layout
- 3:28this is commonly used by like bentley or
- 3:31bugatti to fit a lot of cylinders in a
- 3:33small engine block and this is how it
- 3:35looks so not exactly like the letter w
- 3:38but it sort of makes sense because maybe
- 3:40it's like having two v's within each
- 3:42other and similar to the w layout
- 3:44there's something called a vr layout
- 3:46which you'll find in some volkswagens
- 3:48this allows you to get a six cylinder in
- 3:50the space of about an inline four or
- 3:53inline five and now that you've figured
- 3:55out the layout of the engine you can
- 3:57look at the first number here which is
- 3:59the displacement so in this case 3.0 l
- 4:02means three liters this just tells you
- 4:04what the total volume is in all of the
- 4:06cylinders combined so if you have a
- 4:08three liter v6 that means three liters
- 4:12is divided by six cylinders so each
- 4:14cylinder is 0.5 liters or 500
- 4:17milliliters or 500 cc's and to put that
- 4:20in context the new honda civic has a
- 4:23four cylinder with 1.5 liters while the
- 4:25new bugatti has a 16 cylinder with 8
- 4:28liters and that is basically all you
- 4:30need to know to talk about engines
- 4:32except for one thing which is the
- 4:34induction type now most engines are
- 4:36what's called naturally aspirated and
- 4:38this means the movement of the pistons
- 4:40in the cylinders draws fresh air in
- 4:42which means you have oxygen for the
- 4:44combustion to occur however there is a
- 4:47better way to do things and that's by
- 4:48either using a turbocharger or a
- 4:50supercharger to cram more air into the
- 4:53engine more air means more oxygen which
- 4:55means you can have a bigger explosion
- 4:58and make more horsepower the difference
- 5:00between a turbocharger and a
- 5:01supercharger is that a turbocharger uses
- 5:04the exhaust gases coming from the engine
- 5:06to spin a turbine which compresses air
- 5:08and sends it into the cylinders on the
- 5:10other hand a supercharger uses the
- 5:12actual turning of the engine to cram
- 5:14more air in it's getting to the point
- 5:16nowadays where most cars have a
- 5:18supercharger or a turbocharger because
- 5:20it means you can use a smaller engine
- 5:22and get better gas mileage but still
- 5:24have the same amount of power as a large
- 5:26engine and now you're totally certified
- 5:28to talk about engines with actual car
- 5:30people however engines are connected to
- 5:33something and that's the transmission
- 5:35which is the next thing we need to talk
- 5:36about and there are two basic types of
- 5:38transmissions one is an automatic
- 5:40gearbox and one is a manual automatic
- 5:43basically just means that the car can
- 5:45actually shift gears for you now in most
- 5:47modern automatics you can find paddles
- 5:49behind the wheel to control when the car
- 5:51shifts but it's still the car doing the
- 5:53shifting for you now compare that to a
- 5:55manual gearbox where you have to go
- 5:57around playing with a stick all day this
- 5:59is highly preferred to car enthusiasts
- 6:01because they love playing with sticks
- 6:03and it's also more satisfying and a more
- 6:05engaging driving experience than driving
- 6:07an automatic so if anyone says they're a
- 6:09car enthusiast but they drive an
- 6:11automatic you should probably ridicule
- 6:13them and make fun until they hang
- 6:15themselves any true car enthusiast would
- 6:17drive a manual now a manual gearbox
- 6:20takes practice to learn how to drive and
- 6:22you also have to deal with three pedals
- 6:24instead of just two but that's why it's
- 6:26more fun it's more engaging since
- 6:27there's more to do and you're constantly
- 6:30kept busy and focused on the experience
- 6:32of driving now that's basically all you
- 6:34need to know about transmissions just
- 6:36get a manual if you're into cars and
- 6:38want to have fun and get an automatic if
- 6:40you want people to know you're a loser
- 6:42so we have power being generated in the
- 6:44engine being sent through the gearbox
- 6:46but now it needs to go through the
- 6:47wheels and there's actually three
- 6:49different ways of doing this one way of
- 6:51doing this is all-wheel drive where you
- 6:53send power to all of the wheels this is
- 6:55common in subarus and it's best for low
- 6:57grip environments like snow or mud
- 7:00however it's very inefficient because
- 7:01there's a lot of power loss due to all
- 7:03the components it's also pretty
- 7:05expensive and heavy a cheaper and
- 7:07lighter alternative to all-wheel drive
- 7:09is rear-wheel drive this is where you
- 7:12only send power to the rear wheels this
- 7:14is very popular for performance cars as
- 7:16it offers the best blend of grip and
- 7:18lightness that's because whenever you
- 7:20accelerate in a car weight shifts to the
- 7:22back and therefore there's more force on
- 7:25the rear wheels which gives you better
- 7:27traction now compare this to the last
- 7:29drive type which is front wheel drive
- 7:31front wheel drive is the cheapest and
- 7:33lightest way to build a car but it's not
- 7:36as good for traction because when you
- 7:37accelerate weight lifts off of the front
- 7:40wheels as it goes to the back and then
- 7:41you get less traction in the front where
- 7:44your drive is now this doesn't really
- 7:46matter for the majority of cars or
- 7:48people driving them so pretty much any
- 7:50civic or normal commuter car is
- 7:52front-wheel drive it's the cheapest
- 7:54drive type to build it also gets the
- 7:56best fuel economy because there's less
- 7:58distance for the power to travel and
- 8:00it's also safer because most people know
- 8:02how to drive a front wheel drive car
- 8:04whereas a rear wheel drive car can be
- 8:05unpredictable to those without
- 8:07experience now while you can send power
- 8:09anywhere you can also place the engine
- 8:11anywhere you can put the engine in the
- 8:13front of the car in the middle or even
- 8:15in the rear by far the most common place
- 8:18to put the engine is in the front but if
- 8:20you get an exotic car like a lamborghini
- 8:22or a ferrari or mclaren usually the
- 8:24engine will be in the middle since the
- 8:26engine is usually the heaviest component
- 8:28in a car and it's in the middle it means
- 8:30the car can rotate easily so it handles
- 8:32better now rear engine is really only
- 8:34used by porsche and it's good because
- 8:36you get a lot of weight on the rear
- 8:38wheels which gives you better traction
- 8:40now all this is great and all but
- 8:42there's one thing you really need to
- 8:44understand and that is a limited slip
- 8:46differential so in 95 percent of cars
- 8:48you have what's called an open
- 8:49differential this means the power takes
- 8:51the path of least resistance so if you
- 8:53spin one tire then that tire is gonna
- 8:55instantly start spinning really fast and
- 8:57the other won't have any power going to
- 8:59it but if you have a limited slip
- 9:01differential then whenever you start
- 9:03spinning one wheel the other on the
- 9:05other side will start spinning at the
- 9:06same speed this means you can drift and
- 9:08you get better traction because both
- 9:10tires are spinning trying to grab the
- 9:12pavement so that's really the most
- 9:14important thing that any sports car
- 9:16needs besides a manual gearbox so now
- 9:18we've talked about the engine the
- 9:19transmission and the drivetrain and i
- 9:22said you can combine these things in
- 9:23different ways to create any type of car
- 9:25so here are some of the basic types the
- 9:27first is what i call an econo box this
- 9:30is basically your chevy spark or your
- 9:32old hyundais these are usually front
- 9:34engine and front wheel drive and they're
- 9:36made for people who don't really care
- 9:38about driving they're not meant to be
- 9:39fun or luxurious just meant to get you
- 9:41from point a to point b muscle cars on
- 9:44the other hand are quite different
- 9:46they're meant to have tons of power and
- 9:47be really fun to drive in a straight
- 9:50line they're usually pretty cheap and
- 9:51you can think of it like a mustang or
- 9:54camaro a muscle car has to be rear-wheel
- 9:56drive and it usually has a v8 sometimes
- 9:59even with a supercharger on it these
- 10:01cars are big and heavy and they don't
- 10:03really go around corners which is fine
- 10:05because the typical person who buys this
- 10:07car doesn't even know how the steering
- 10:09wheel works now moving on from muscle
- 10:11cars you have luxury cars these often
- 10:13have the same large engine but it's
- 10:16meant to be more smooth and the interior
- 10:18are much nicer something like a lexus
- 10:21ls400 has a smooth v8 while a
- 10:24rolls-royce phantom has a silky v12 and
- 10:28now we move on to sports cars these tend
- 10:30to be lighter and smaller than muscle or
- 10:32luxury cars and they have less power a
- 10:35muscle car will have overwhelming and
- 10:36intoxicating power while sports car has
- 10:39just enough or maybe a lot depending on
- 10:41how expensive it is it also has a bigger
- 10:43focus on handling than either of the
- 10:45prior categories and these things tend
- 10:48to have little compromise oftentimes a
- 10:50sports car is like a regular civic or
- 10:52golf that just got converted to be a
- 10:54little bit more fun sometimes you have a
- 10:56purpose built like a coupe which is
- 10:58meant to be just a sports car but it
- 11:00still has a usable trunk and you can
- 11:02daily drive it now compare that to a
- 11:04supercar which is a lot more compromised
- 11:06it's focused on being really fast and
- 11:08really fun it has a huge focus on
- 11:11handling and it tries to be super light
- 11:13and awesome looking that means it has a
- 11:15tiny trunk gets bad gas mileage and if
- 11:18you try to daily it you're probably
- 11:19gonna want to hang yourself now one step
- 11:22up even from that is hyper cars these
- 11:24are over a million dollars and these are
- 11:27paganis koenigseggs bugattis things that
- 11:29are extremely exotic they're usually mid
- 11:32engine as well because as like i said
- 11:34earlier it handles the best if you want
- 11:36to see some awesome sports cars that you
- 11:38can buy for 10 grand or less check out
- 11:40this video some have two turbos some are
- 11:44all-wheel drive and some are mid-engined
- 11:46which yeah i said those are usually
- 11:48ferraris but the one in that video is
- 11:50like five thousand dollars and it's
- 11:51basically ferrari so the cars on that
- 11:53list are super cool and they apply what
- 11:56we've been
