  1. 0:01Hi everyone. Well, I am Britain's
  2. 0:02strictest headmistress, so I need us
  3. 0:04sitting up straight and all eyes on me.
  4. 0:10A few weeks ago,
  5. 0:12we all say saw the same footage.
  6. 0:15A young man called Henry Novak, barely
  7. 0:17out of childhood, handcuffed on the
  8. 0:19ground,
  9. 0:21begging the police for help.
  10. 0:24And what followed was the confusion of
  11. 0:26our commentators as they struggled to
  12. 0:28explain how
  13. 0:30our young police officers, sworn to
  14. 0:32protect the public, could behave in such
  15. 0:34a way.
  16. 0:36No one seemed to have a convincing
  17. 0:37answer.
  18. 0:39But when you spend a lifetime in
  19. 0:40schools, it's pretty clear what's going
  20. 0:42on.
  21. 0:44Those young police officers are not a
  22. 0:46special case.
  23. 0:47They're collateral damage.
  24. 0:49And the pattern runs far further afield
  25. 0:51than policing.
  26. 0:53Last September, Charlie Kirk was shot,
  27. 0:56and within hours, young people were
  28. 0:58celebrating all over the internet,
  29. 1:00despite the fact that his two little
  30. 1:02children would have to grow up without
  31. 1:03their father.
  32. 1:05Many of us looked on in disbelief.
  33. 1:08What has happened to the moral core of
  34. 1:10our young people?
  35. 1:12Something has changed profoundly in how
  36. 1:15our young people see the world.
  37. 1:17Those police officers were not evil.
  38. 1:20They were not incompetent. They were
  39. 1:22terrified.
  40. 1:23Terrified of being seen as racist.
  41. 1:27Charlie Kirk held views young people
  42. 1:29find objectionable,
  43. 1:31and so his death was cause for
  44. 1:33celebration.
  45. 1:35Henry Novak's attacker was a brown man,
  46. 1:38so the police's deepest instinct to
  47. 1:41protect the victim was overridden by
  48. 1:44their most powerful fear, being accused
  49. 1:47of racism.
  50. 1:49The police are not special.
  51. 1:52They're what some of our young people
  52. 1:53have become so consumed by white guilt
  53. 1:56that they will do crazy, irrational, and
  54. 1:58inhumane things rather than risk being
  55. 2:01seen as racist.
  56. 2:04Unless we try to explain this change in
  57. 2:06our moral core,
  58. 2:08and the moral core of our young people,
  59. 2:11and why we are witnessing this culture
  60. 2:13change across many Western countries, we
  61. 2:16cannot pretend to care about the West.
  62. 2:19Our profound lack of interest in the
  63. 2:21moral values surrounding our children
  64. 2:24has caused our civilizational collapse.
  65. 2:28The reason the younger generation see
  66. 2:30things as they do is because they have
  67. 2:33been taught to view people in two camps,
  68. 2:36those who are oppressed and those who
  69. 2:39are oppressors. And in their eyes,
  70. 2:41Charlie Kirk was an oppressor, so his
  71. 2:43death did not warrant grief.
  72. 2:46The man who killed Kenny Novak belonged
  73. 2:49to the oppressed class, so the police's
  74. 2:52job was to protect him, not the dying
  75. 2:55man on the ground.
  76. 2:58This is not cruelty or incompetence.
  77. 3:01This is white guilt.
  78. 3:02And we are the ones who have taught this
  79. 3:04to our children. We, the boomers, the
  80. 3:08Gen Xers, the older millennials, we are
  81. 3:11responsible for not teaching our
  82. 3:12children the difference between right
  83. 3:14and wrong. We
  84. 3:18>> [applause]
  85. 3:22>> We are the ones who immersed our
  86. 3:24children in a culture of victimhood,
  87. 3:27which is at odds with the culture of
  88. 3:29personal responsibility
  89. 3:31we all grew up in. A culture we very
  90. 3:34stupidly taken for granted. As little as
  91. 3:3740 or 50 years ago, the bedrock of
  92. 3:40traditional small-c conservative values
  93. 3:42that built the West were commonplace in
  94. 3:44our schools and in our general culture.
  95. 3:47One of my teachers at my school always
  96. 3:50tells me about his grandfather,
  97. 3:52a man who, no matter how ill he was,
  98. 3:54never missed a single day at work,
  99. 3:57yet always had time to teach his
  100. 3:58grandson how to be a better version of
  101. 4:00himself.
  102. 4:02No quiet quitting for him.
  103. 4:05When he retired fifth after 50 years, 50
  104. 4:08years with the same company,
  105. 4:11he was so proud of his company letter
  106. 4:14thanking him for his service that he
  107. 4:16gave it to his grandson.
  108. 4:19Once upon a time, we all knew that
  109. 4:21traditional values gave us a chance at a
  110. 4:24meaningful life.
  111. 4:26All the grandmothers knew it, all the
  112. 4:28pastors knew it, even the teachers knew
  113. 4:31it.
  114. 4:32So, why don't our young people know it
  115. 4:34now?
  116. 4:35We boomers, Gen Xers, and older
  117. 4:38millennials think school is just about
  118. 4:40teaching algebra.
  119. 4:42Your kid's science teacher not so good?
  120. 4:44No big deal. Just get the kid a tutor.
  121. 4:46And sure, they're on social media, but
  122. 4:48we had TV, and we assume they're the
  123. 4:51same.
  124. 4:53Parents are busy working, and well, your
  125. 4:55own parents didn't war game your
  126. 4:57upbringing.
  127. 4:59It just sort of happens somehow.
  128. 5:01You grew up without too much effort, and
  129. 5:04you turned out just fine.
  130. 5:06You know the difference between right
  131. 5:08and wrong.
  132. 5:09So, why would you war game the
  133. 5:11upbringing of your own children?
  134. 5:13Because raising a kid in the 21st
  135. 5:16century is a different order of
  136. 5:17magnitude of task. We have taken for
  137. 5:20granted the values from our elders, and
  138. 5:22we have missed the fact that we are the
  139. 5:25elders now.
  140. 5:27The only reason the Sex and the City
  141. 5:28liberalism of the 1990s was fine was
  142. 5:31because we were anchored by the small-c
  143. 5:33conservatism of our parents and our
  144. 5:35grandparents.
  145. 5:36Do you ever wonder why Gen Z behaves so
  146. 5:39differently in the workplace?
  147. 5:41Not all of them, sure, but
  148. 5:43we all know they tend to be be
  149. 5:45performative than older generations,
  150. 5:48tend to value feelings more,
  151. 5:50and don't really embody the small C
  152. 5:53conservative values of duty to others or
  153. 5:57real sacrifice instead of the
  154. 5:59performative kind.
  155. 6:01Instead, young people swim in a culture
  156. 6:05of instant gratification and live your
  157. 6:08best life. You do you. Be who you want
  158. 6:11to be.
  159. 6:12And if you think Gen Z is bad, just you
  160. 6:15wait till you see Gen Alpha.
  161. 6:17The culture shift comes from what
  162. 6:19children learn at school and online.
  163. 6:22Ask any young person what history they
  164. 6:24learned at school, and they'll tell you,
  165. 6:27"Hitler."
  166. 6:28Ask them what else? "Slavery." Ask them
  167. 6:30what else? "American civil rights." In
  168. 6:33fact, what little they know of history
  169. 6:35will be all about black and brown people
  170. 6:38fighting for equality against the white
  171. 6:41man. Women fighting men for the vote.
  172. 6:44Gay and trans people fighting for
  173. 6:46various rights. Our young people have
  174. 6:49been taught that history is simply one
  175. 6:51long story about various groups
  176. 6:54struggling under the oppressive dead
  177. 6:58white man. Out with Dickens,
  178. 7:00Shakespeare, Kipling, and Wordsworth. We
  179. 7:02must decolonize. History is taught
  180. 7:05through an oppressor lens. The
  181. 7:06triangular slave trade, white men held
  182. 7:08the power. What about Britain ending the
  183. 7:10slave trade? More than a quick mention,
  184. 7:12if at all? Mm, no. What of the Arab
  185. 7:15slave trade that lasted three times as
  186. 7:17long as the triangular slave trade? Mm,
  187. 7:19no. Okay, so, GCSE history in Britain is
  188. 7:23often taught as migration through time.
  189. 7:27So, the idea that Britain has always
  190. 7:29been a land of immigrants is embedded in
  191. 7:32our children's heads. Most schools would
  192. 7:35prefer to concentrate learning
  193. 7:37about the tiny number of black people
  194. 7:40who existed in Tudor England over a
  195. 7:42thorough analysis of England's break
  196. 7:45from Rome.
  197. 7:46Medieval history becomes her story and
  198. 7:49is told through the eyes of Eleanor of
  199. 7:52Aquitaine because after all, she was a
  200. 7:55woman. Not to mention weeks on King
  201. 7:57Mansa Musa of Mali because he was a
  202. 8:00black Muslim. His bearing on British
  203. 8:02institutions, laws, and faith is
  204. 8:05nonexistent
  205. 8:06and the fact that he is said to have
  206. 8:08been the richest man in history thanks
  207. 8:10in part to his massive slave-owning
  208. 8:14society is a detail somehow that
  209. 8:17teachers rarely ever teach.
  210. 8:20But it isn't just our schools.
  211. 8:22It's our general culture, too.
  212. 8:25Take your kids to a museum or an art
  213. 8:28gallery in any Western country and
  214. 8:31you'll find the same narrative.
  215. 8:34As an example, when learning about
  216. 8:36aviation in London's Science Museum and
  217. 8:40the extraordinary feat that is man
  218. 8:43making massive machines move in the sky
  219. 8:48a write-up on the wall explains that
  220. 8:50women and black people were historically
  221. 8:52barred from aviation schools and the
  222. 8:54military.
  223. 8:55Similarly, James Watt, the man who
  224. 8:58invented the steam engine and is
  225. 9:00considered the founder of the Industrial
  226. 9:03Revolution has a write-up on the wall
  227. 9:05explaining that his early career
  228. 9:07involved slave trafficking with a bonus
  229. 9:09analysis of the whole of Britain's
  230. 9:11complicity in the slave trade.
  231. 9:15They flatten the entire human story and
  232. 9:18all of its complexities into the
  233. 9:20narrative of oppressor and oppressed
  234. 9:23leaving young people unable to see the
  235. 9:26world in any other terms.
  236. 9:33>> [applause]
  237. 9:40>> How can children feel that they belong
  238. 9:42to their country when they are immersed
  239. 9:44in an educational culture that teaches
  240. 9:46that their country is merely an evil
  241. 9:49oppressor?
  242. 9:50Children are the future.
  243. 9:53And yet we are teaching them to have
  244. 9:55contempt for their elders whose
  245. 9:57oppressive world needs overthrowing by a
  246. 9:59new world of young, arrogant,
  247. 10:01anti-racists who know better than we do.
  248. 10:05We older Westerners are cutting off the
  249. 10:07branches upon which we sit because of
  250. 10:09the guilt some of us feel for being
  251. 10:10white and privileged. We look at
  252. 10:12Mandami, the mayor of New York, and Zack
  253. 10:15Polanski, the very popular leader of the
  254. 10:16Green Party amongst the under 30s in the
  255. 10:18UK,
  256. 10:20and we wonder what on earth is going on.
  257. 10:22Why are our young people voting for and
  258. 10:25cheerleading these Marxist and really
  259. 10:27quite extreme politicians?
  260. 10:30Few of us understand how much the online
  261. 10:33world reinforces this culture of the
  262. 10:36oppressor versus the oppressed.
  263. 10:38Victimhood saturates every video,
  264. 10:41whether it's about a foreign war,
  265. 10:43transphobia, or racism, and white guilt
  266. 10:47lingers everywhere. It should not come
  267. 10:50as a surprise that our young people's
  268. 10:51moral core does not recognize complexity
  269. 10:54or nuance. They have been formed by
  270. 10:56school and the online world to make one
  271. 11:00judgment only, oppressor or oppressed,
  272. 11:04good or bad, and they are desperate not
  273. 11:08to be seen as racist.
  274. 11:10We see this most starkly with our young
  275. 11:12police officers.
  276. 11:14Well, I'm here to tell you
  277. 11:16that's on us.
  278. 11:18We don't care about childhood, and then
  279. 11:20we wonder why our children have imbibed
  280. 11:23the wrong values.
  281. 11:24At my school, Michaela, developing
  282. 11:27traditional moral character and
  283. 11:29defending our inherited tradition is at
  284. 11:31the center of what we do.
  285. 11:34Now, being a teacher,
  286. 11:36I've got some homework for you.
  287. 11:39I want you to live your lives by the
  288. 11:41small-c conservative values that were
  289. 11:43instinctive to our grandparents.
  290. 11:46Be brave and put away your lifestyles of
  291. 11:49anything goes.
  292. 11:51Saving the West ain't easy, you know.
  293. 11:55And then you need to narrate those
  294. 11:56traditional values openly with your
  295. 11:59children, your grandchildren, your
  296. 12:01nephews, your nieces as if WE'RE GOING
  297. 12:04TO WAR.
  298. 12:05We need
  299. 12:07>> [applause]
  300. 12:12[applause]
  301. 12:15>> We need to inoculate our children
  302. 12:17against the seductive ideas of
  303. 12:19victimhood and hold them to account so
  304. 12:22that they can see that they are morally
  305. 12:24responsible beings with agency, whatever
  306. 12:28their race, whatever their religion.
  307. 12:30So, yes, Henry Novak's police officers
  308. 12:33were trained with the wrong priorities.
  309. 12:35But that training was only fuel on a
  310. 12:37fire that has been burning their whole
  311. 12:40entire lives.
  312. 12:42A young man lay dying on the ground and
  313. 12:44their most powerful instinct was not to
  314. 12:46help him, but to manage their own terror
  315. 12:49of being seen as racist. This is not a
  316. 12:52policing a failure. This is a
  317. 12:54civilizational failure and it belongs to
  318. 12:56us because of what we have done and are
  319. 12:59doing TO OUR CHILDREN.
  320. 13:02>> [applause]
  321. 13:06[applause]
  322. 13:09>> I TALK ABOUT ALL OF THIS AND MORE ON my
  323. 13:11new podcast coming out in August. And
  324. 13:14strict It's called strictly education
  325. 13:16for parents, for teachers out there and
  326. 13:17you can find me on YouTube.
  327. 13:19We all need to be brave enough to teach
  328. 13:22children a sense of duty and service,
  329. 13:25love of country, gratitude over
  330. 13:28entitlement, hard work over laziness.
  331. 13:32Forgiveness over vengeance. And our
  332. 13:34children will reject the oppressor and
  333. 13:36oppressed narrative instinctively. They
  334. 13:39will know in their hearts that dignity
  335. 13:41comes through owning one's moral agency,
  336. 13:44through being responsible and
  337. 13:46sacrificing for the betterment of the
  338. 13:49whole.
  339. 13:50Schools matter.
  340. 13:52Families matter.
  341. 13:54Children matter.
  342. 13:56Save our children and we'll save the
  343. 13:58West. Thank you.
  344. 14:01>> [applause]
