  1. 0:00This big bull was limping on his right
  2. 0:02front, and as soon as I picked this up,
  3. 0:04I found out why.
  4. 0:06Welcome back
  5. 0:07to Nate the Hoof Guy.
  6. 0:10First, we trim away some of the debris
  7. 0:12around it.
  8. 0:16Clearing some of the debris away allows
  9. 0:17me to get a better bite with my pliers
  10. 0:19so I can pull it out.
  11. 0:25At this point, I can see some ridges in
  12. 0:27there, so I thought it might have been a
  13. 0:28screw.
  14. 0:31Well, it moves fairly easily. That's a
  15. 0:33good sign.
  16. 0:40Well, that is not a screw. That is a
  17. 0:42galvanized ring shank nail.
  18. 0:44These are used to hold the steel on the
  19. 0:46roofs and sides of barns. They're
  20. 0:48galvanized so they don't rust.
  21. 0:56Well, luckily the soles on this bull's
  22. 0:58hoof are pretty thick, so we're going to
  23. 1:00get it trimmed up, and then we're going
  24. 1:01to evaluate and see what it looks like
  25. 1:03on the inside. He was favoring this
  26. 1:05foot, so I know it went all the way
  27. 1:06through.
  28. 1:14Now, you can see where that hole is in
  29. 1:16that sole. Now, a lot of times when we
  30. 1:18trim and we find some a piece of metal
  31. 1:19in a claw, you'll see an oxidation ring
  32. 1:22all the way around that area. It'd be
  33. 1:24all black. However, in this case, we
  34. 1:26don't have that because that nail that
  35. 1:28was in there was a galvanized nail. So,
  36. 1:31no oxidation, no black ring.
  37. 1:45Now, the farmer had told me that this
  38. 1:46bull just started favoring this foot, so
  39. 1:48I know that nail couldn't have been in
  40. 1:49there too long, which means that the
  41. 1:51area of separation around it is probably
  42. 1:53minimal as well. So, I got to take my
  43. 1:55time working slowly to try to get that
  44. 1:57opened up. But, first I'm going to get a
  45. 1:59block on. Bulls have very big necks,
  46. 2:02right? So, when they're in the chute,
  47. 2:04they they're held a little bit tighter
  48. 2:05than a cow is, especially in that neck
  49. 2:07area. So, I don't want to mess around
  50. 2:09with taking too much time to have a bull
  51. 2:11in the chute. I get that block on now.
  52. 2:13I'm going to work around that block just
  53. 2:14so I make sure that I've got enough time
  54. 2:16for that glue to cure. I want to get him
  55. 2:18out as soon as possible so he's not
  56. 2:20standing in there any longer than he
  57. 2:22needs to be.
  58. 2:27This is the largest size block that I
  59. 2:29carry, and you'll see I need all of it
  60. 2:30to cover that sole.
  61. 2:47Now, it's time to get to it. First thing
  62. 2:49I'm going to do is thin all of the hoof
  63. 2:51horn around it, trying to make that sole
  64. 2:52a little more pliable so I can get my
  65. 2:54hook the hook of my knife up underneath
  66. 2:56that to lift that away.
  67. 3:16Once again, I'm expecting the area of
  68. 3:18separation underneath there to be small,
  69. 3:20so I'm working in real small circles as
  70. 3:22I go around it.
  71. 3:48These pasture bulls have real hard feet,
  72. 3:51and you can hear it as I trim this.
  73. 4:12As I work around this edge, it comes
  74. 4:14away quite cleanly.
  75. 4:28Luckily for this guy and his thick
  76. 4:30soles, there's very little disturbance
  77. 4:32underneath.
  78. 4:56Well, I'm really happy the way this
  79. 4:57turned out considering the
  80. 4:58circumstances. That was a pretty big
  81. 4:59nail. Luckily his soles were thick. He
  82. 5:02should have no problem getting over this
  83. 5:04in no time. Now, with this wrap, I'm
  84. 5:05going to put this on really loose. When
  85. 5:07it comes to cows, you can put a little
  86. 5:08more wrap on that if the wrap doesn't
  87. 5:11fall off, you can always help it by
  88. 5:12taking it off in the parlor. In this
  89. 5:14case, this bull is going to be out on
  90. 5:15pasture, and he's not as easy to just
  91. 5:18get right up next to you. So, we put
  92. 5:20that wrap on loose. I'm not tucking it
  93. 5:21in or anything like that.
  94. 5:23Once we get that uh block cured, we're
  95. 5:25going to put him down and let him walk
  96. 5:27away, and you'll see how much better
  97. 5:29he's walking now, and I'm sure he's
  98. 5:31thankful I intervened when I did.
  99. 5:39He already notice there was ever
  100. 5:40anything wrong.
