Things I Stopped Buying — And What I Do Instead — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00I've recently realized that there were
- 0:01quite a few things that I used to spend
- 0:03money on and that I no longer do. And
- 0:06they were things that I liked, things
- 0:07that I enjoyed spending money on because
- 0:09I enjoyed the results they gave me, but
- 0:12with time I either consciously stopped
- 0:14spending money on them because I wanted
- 0:15to save money and I wanted to hit my
- 0:17financial goals. Some of them I kind of
- 0:19naturally stopped with time as time
- 0:21passed. These things used to make me
- 0:23feel a little bit more put together and
- 0:25they felt like a part of my routine and
- 0:27for a long time I didn't really question
- 0:29it. It's was something that I was paying
- 0:31for regularly without even thinking
- 0:33about it and at some point I've realized
- 0:35that I just stopped. Not all at once and
- 0:38not because anything dramatic happened,
- 0:41but I just started noticing that I don't
- 0:44actually want to keep paying for certain
- 0:46things anymore and that surprised me a
- 0:47little bit because it's not that I
- 0:49suddenly stopped liking those things or
- 0:51because I stopped liking the effect that
- 0:53I got out of these things or the way
- 0:55that these things made me feel because
- 0:57in some cases I still do. I can still
- 0:58enjoy those things,
- 1:00but something shifted in how I see those
- 1:03choices now and how I'm prioritizing the
- 1:05effect that I get out of them. What's
- 1:08worth it, what actually adds something
- 1:10to my life and what doesn't. So, when I
- 1:12really looked at it, I realized there
- 1:14are quite a few things I just don't
- 1:16spend money on anymore and more
- 1:18importantly I've replaced them with
- 1:20things that feel better, that feel
- 1:21simpler or just more like me. So, I want
- 1:24to go through those things and also
- 1:25share what I do instead now because
- 1:28that's really where the shift is
- 1:29happening. So, the first thing I've
- 1:31stopped spending money on and this is
- 1:33fairly recently are nails. I used to do
- 1:35my nails professionally like a nail
- 1:37technician and I've quit doing that for
- 1:39two reasons. Number one, I wanted to
- 1:40save the money because I have financial
- 1:43goals that I've touched on a little bit
- 1:44in previous videos, but I have financial
- 1:46goals I would like to hit and sooner the
- 1:48better.
- 1:49Um nothing pressing, nothing, you know,
- 1:51dramatic is happening. It's just that I
- 1:53have goals and I want to reach them and
- 1:55I'm committed to my goals and so, I
- 1:57wanted to save money in different areas
- 2:00of my life and one of the things that I
- 2:02wanted to stop paying for are my nails.
- 2:04And the second thing that made me stop
- 2:06is that
- 2:07personality-wise, I am a little bit of a
- 2:10perfectionist. Meaning, every single
- 2:12time that I was at my nail tech, and
- 2:14I've been doing this for months, right?
- 2:16I've been doing my nails for months and
- 2:17I can share some pictures in here. So,
- 2:19you'll see how it looked like and what I
- 2:21used to go for.
- 2:22Every single time
- 2:24that I went and did my nails at the nail
- 2:26tech,
- 2:27there was something about it that truly
- 2:29bothered me and there were there were
- 2:31different things, right? Sometimes the
- 2:33the shade was not exactly what I wanted.
- 2:35It was sometimes the shape. Sometimes it
- 2:38wasn't really aligned. Something's
- 2:40always bothering me and once you go, you
- 2:42are kind of stuck with that thing for 3
- 2:45weeks. And that doesn't work for a
- 2:48person like me who likes control and who
- 2:50likes things to be neat and who likes to
- 2:52have things the way they like it to be.
- 2:54And so, personality-wise, that wasn't a
- 2:57good fit for me. But, also I really
- 2:59wanted to save the money. So, what I've
- 3:00been doing now is just that I went back
- 3:02to wearing natural nails, just my
- 3:04natural nails. I have a little bit of a
- 3:06nail strengthener on and if I want
- 3:10I still have some polishes that I can
- 3:13use and I can do my nails at home. That
- 3:15way I don't have to set an appointment
- 3:17anywhere. I don't have to spend any more
- 3:19money because I'm not buying any more
- 3:20nail polishes. I have plenty. I have
- 3:22enough like to last me for 2 years now.
- 3:25And I've been actually loving the look
- 3:28of natural
- 3:30neutral nails so much. I think they're
- 3:32so
- 3:34I don't know. I think they're so classy.
- 3:36I think they're something simple and
- 3:37classy and elegant about them.
- 3:40And I surprisingly like them a little
- 3:42bit more than done nails and I don't
- 3:45know if it's a phase that I'm going
- 3:46through.
- 3:47Um I have to say I have a lot of very
- 3:49elegant women in my job. And you know
- 3:52what I've noticed what's common to all
- 3:54of the very elegant women that I have,
- 3:56you know, it's it's ranging different
- 3:59type of of women, the way they dress,
- 4:00the way they act.
- 4:03The wealthy, elegant women at my job,
- 4:06they don't do their nails. They keep
- 4:07their nails natural.
- 4:10I don't know what the deal is. And I
- 4:11feel like they still manage to look
- 4:13classy and put together. And in my head,
- 4:15I remember going and having my nails
- 4:17done because in my head, this was an act
- 4:21of
- 4:22being put together.
- 4:23You if you have enough funds for doing
- 4:26your nails, if you have enough time to
- 4:28invest in yourself, then you you kind of
- 4:30made it and you always looked put
- 4:32together and you always looked arranged
- 4:35and and and taken care of. More and more
- 4:37money I'm putting every single month to
- 4:40my security, my safety net fund that I
- 4:42have and I'm actually more than halfway
- 4:44to where I want to be in the grand
- 4:46scheme of things. So, I'm very proud
- 4:47about that and I'm going to keep on
- 4:49pushing working on that until I achieve
- 4:51my goals. Next thing that I no longer
- 4:53pay for is to get blonde highlights. My
- 4:55natural hair color is rather like a deep
- 4:58brown,
- 4:59>> [snorts]
- 4:59>> a deep cool tone brown. And I used to
- 5:01get blonde highlights and that thing is
- 5:04expensive. I mean, I don't know where
- 5:06it's depending on where you live in your
- 5:07country and the currency that you're
- 5:09using and whatever. But to me, for my
- 5:11hair and where I live, that could cost
- 5:14between $150 to $200 doing your hair.
- 5:17Obviously, it grows and you have to redo
- 5:19it every like I don't know, 6 months, 5
- 5:21months.
- 5:22And I've stopped doing that altogether.
- 5:24And this is something that happened kind
- 5:26of half naturally, like half I took
- 5:29half I was just kind of tired of it. And
- 5:32also I wanted to save the money. So, one
- 5:34day I would just woke up and I was like,
- 5:35this is this a lot of money to be
- 5:37spending every few months on hair, on
- 5:39something that you cut off. And I'm not
- 5:41saying that hair is not important. Hair
- 5:43is very important. It's part of the main
- 5:45accessory that we have on our looks.
- 5:48But I feel that what I do right now,
- 5:50like my natural hair color, I went I
- 5:52went back to my natural hair color. I
- 5:54feel it looks so much more elegant. I
- 5:56just dye my hair in this Garnier box
- 5:58that I buy that last me for two times.
- 6:01That Garnier box is $7 or $8, and it
- 6:05last me for two times. So, $4 for each
- 6:08month and a half and between, you know,
- 6:11dyeing my my [clears throat] roots,
- 6:12doing my hair. I don't have much gray
- 6:14hairs, but I do have a couple. And so
- 6:16every month and a half or so I'll redo
- 6:18I'll retouch my roots. And I went back
- 6:21to my natural hair color, and
- 6:24I love it. I truly love it. It's not
- 6:26something that I miss. With my nails, I
- 6:29sometimes feel like maybe in the future
- 6:30I'll miss them, you know? I don't know.
- 6:32I kind of like it right now, but maybe
- 6:33in the future
- 6:35I I have a sense that in the fall and
- 6:37winter I want to go back to red. I used
- 6:39to get red nail polish all the time as
- 6:41my nail technician.
- 6:42But so that's maybe something that I'll
- 6:45be missing and going back to.
- 6:48But my highlights, I really I really
- 6:51don't feel the need to go back to them.
- 6:54I have been loving wearing my natural
- 6:56hair color, and it suits me. And I just
- 6:58don't want to be spending that money
- 7:00anymore on something that you have to
- 7:01repetitively do. It's not one one and
- 7:04done, right? If it was an investment
- 7:06like buying a closet, you know, you're
- 7:08going to you know, yes, it's a big
- 7:10expense, but it's going to last for such
- 7:12a long time.
- 7:13And you get so much um value out of it.
- 7:17So, it's okay to invest in something
- 7:18like that. But a hair that you cut off
- 7:22and nails that you cut off every a
- 7:24certain amount of time, then you have to
- 7:26pay for it again. It's not something
- 7:28that I like to subscribe to. And I truly
- 7:31enjoy so far the results of having
- 7:33natural nails and natural hair.
- 7:35Semi-natural hair because I do touch up
- 7:37my roots. Next [clears throat] thing
- 7:38that I've stopped completely spending
- 7:40money on, and this happened naturally.
- 7:42It's not that I've stopped and said
- 7:44like, "Okay, I want to save money." This
- 7:46happened naturally. I no longer spend
- 7:48money on facials and face mask. I think
- 7:52the things that are when it comes to
- 7:54skin,
- 7:55and [snorts] this is my opinion, right?
- 7:56I'm not a dermatologist, I'm not like an
- 7:59expert in skin care or something, but
- 8:00I'm I'm sharing as a woman what has been
- 8:02working so well for me and what has not.
- 8:05I felt like when I did those one-time
- 8:08solutions, like either if it's a facials
- 8:11that you have to again do every every 3
- 8:13months or whatever you do, or getting a
- 8:15face mask, I've never seen much good
- 8:18coming out of those. What I much prefer
- 8:21is having my fixed skin care routine
- 8:24that I really love with products that
- 8:26truly work for me, and you you have seen
- 8:28those in previous videos, but having a
- 8:31skin care routine that I truly love with
- 8:33effective ingredients that make me feel
- 8:36good, that I can see results and
- 8:38actually can see how well my skin is
- 8:40reacting to them. This is an action that
- 8:43I repetitively do twice a day, and so
- 8:46obviously the result from that is going
- 8:48to be a cheaper because I'm using my
- 8:50stuff completely. I've built my my skin
- 8:53care routine to the level that I'm so
- 8:54incredibly satisfied from it, so I don't
- 8:57keep on experimenting with different
- 8:58products and I'm trying new ones and I'm
- 9:01playing around and I'm stopping and I
- 9:03don't know, like Sephora style of of a
- 9:05shop and then spending my money on the
- 9:07new merch. I don't do that. I found the
- 9:10products with active ingredients that
- 9:12I've studied that are good for me, good
- 9:14for my skin,
- 9:16and then I just double down on that. I
- 9:18bought them, I use them up, I buy them
- 9:20again.
- 9:21My skin has never been looking better,
- 9:23so much better than me getting the
- 9:25facials or the face mask. It's just it
- 9:28wasn't worth it to me, and I've seen
- 9:31some different, you know,
- 9:33on the day of doing the face mask or the
- 9:35face treatment, I have seen some change,
- 9:38but that change never lasted. I think
- 9:40what truly matters is your day-to-day
- 9:42routine and if you're putting something
- 9:44on your skin twice a day,
- 9:46and this is how you live your life and
- 9:47you're very deliberate deliberate with
- 9:50it, and you're very committed to it.
- 9:52Like I never go with a face full of
- 9:54makeup. I never go to sleep like that. I
- 9:56always might wash my face and I always
- 9:58put on my products. And again, my skin
- 10:01has never looked better. And so, I've
- 10:03completely stopped spending money on
- 10:05facials and face masks. Next thing that
- 10:07I no longer spend money on is makeup.
- 10:10And I'm talking about new makeup. I've
- 10:13recently found, and if you want I can
- 10:15share that with you, my perfect formula
- 10:17of makeup routine. And I again, I'm not
- 10:21looking to experiment anymore and I I
- 10:23think that until now, I felt the need to
- 10:26buy more. Like I felt the need to buy
- 10:28more lipsticks. For example, this is
- 10:29something that I really liked and
- 10:31enjoyed. And I still from time to time
- 10:33will get the urge to get a new lipstick,
- 10:36but I've been become I've been becoming
- 10:38I've been becoming is that what you say?
- 10:40I have become. I have become so good in
- 10:43kind of focusing my attention back to
- 10:45the lipstick that I do love and have.
- 10:48And every single time that I have a new
- 10:49lipstick, I ask myself, like a new
- 10:51lipstick idea, something that I want to
- 10:53purchase. For me it's lipstick, for you
- 10:54it can be new eyeshadows, okay?
- 10:57If there's a new lipstick that I want,
- 10:58that the thought process that I have
- 11:00around it,
- 11:02will I prefer that lipstick more than
- 11:03ones that I already have? Because in
- 11:05here,
- 11:06I have in my little lipstick collection,
- 11:09I have so many lipstick that when I wear
- 11:12them, I truly feel very very beautiful.
- 11:15So, why would I want anything to compete
- 11:18with those
- 11:20if I found my favorites? And so, same
- 11:23goes for eyeshadows and same goes for,
- 11:25you know, blushes and highlighters. I
- 11:28only have one. I don't need more than
- 11:29one. So, the only exception of me
- 11:31repurchasing makeup is when I use
- 11:34something up. Yes, I only have one face
- 11:36powder.
- 11:37So, when I'll use it up, of course, I'll
- 11:40very gladly give myself the permission
- 11:42to go and get it again.
- 11:44Um I have one mascara. If I'll use it
- 11:46up, I'll go and grab a new another one.
- 11:48There's no problem in that. I completely
- 11:50give myself the freedom to do that and
- 11:52repurchase things that I've used up if
- 11:54they are the only one in their category.
- 11:56So, for example, if I'll use up one of
- 11:58my favorite lipsticks,
- 12:00then I will not automatically go out
- 12:03and buy a new lipstick. Why? Because I
- 12:06still have other lipsticks. So, they're
- 12:07not the only one in the category. Maybe
- 12:10I would want to direct my money more
- 12:13into savings and then direct my
- 12:15attention into using the lipstick the
- 12:18rest of the lipsticks that I have um
- 12:20until I use them up so they don't go
- 12:22bad. So, that's a little bit different.
- 12:24But, if I only have one of something, I
- 12:26only I only have one concealer here.
- 12:30So, no problem. When I'll use this up,
- 12:33I'll grant myself the permission of
- 12:35getting a new one. So, makeup is
- 12:37something that I technically stop
- 12:39spending money on because I've become so
- 12:40good at identify the desire and then
- 12:45stopping myself before paying the money
- 12:47on it and redirecting my attention back
- 12:49to what I already have. Next thing, and
- 12:51this is very exciting. Next thing that I
- 12:53want to talk about is perfume. Until
- 12:56now, I've spent money on perfume. And
- 12:58from now on, I and I'll share that with
- 13:00you in a separate but I kind of found I
- 13:03recently purchased like a month ago, I
- 13:06purchased two small size of perfume. I
- 13:09didn't go all out. I didn't went crazy.
- 13:12I had the waiting period of 30 days and
- 13:14then after 30 days, I bought one perfume
- 13:17that is 25 ml and one is 30. I just
- 13:20didn't want to spend the money on the
- 13:22bigger bottle because
- 13:24I I
- 13:25I don't feel comfortable with that. So,
- 13:27those two perfumes that I added to my
- 13:28collection
- 13:30made me realize so many things.
- 13:33And I'm actually right now and I'm also
- 13:35decluttering two perfumes that I'll show
- 13:36you in that video, but I've I'm
- 13:38realizing right now how satisfied I am
- 13:41with the perfume collection that I did
- 13:43build and with what I do have. And in
- 13:46the last week, I completely realized
- 13:48that I am no longer desiring
- 13:51perfume so much because I'm so happy
- 13:53with the collection that I have. So, I
- 13:54think it for the next few months or
- 13:56until the end of the year,
- 13:58I will not be buying perfume. This is
- 13:59not a declaration. If I'll see something
- 14:01that I'll completely fall in love with
- 14:03it,
- 14:04then I'll consider. For example, I've
- 14:06noticed that in my perfume collection, I
- 14:08don't really have a rose perfume. And
- 14:10rose is a is a note that I really love.
- 14:13And so, maybe down the road if I'll come
- 14:16across a perfume that has rose notes in
- 14:18it that I'll absolutely head over heels
- 14:21will fall in love with, then I'll of
- 14:23course I'll implement my my 30-days
- 14:26rule. I'll think about it. And then if
- 14:28I'll still want it, I I might get a
- 14:30small bottle the same way that I did
- 14:31right now, but I no longer have this
- 14:34burning desire of having more perfume
- 14:37and get them into my house. It's I feel
- 14:39like it's pretty much cured in a way. I
- 14:42have the I have the feeling that my
- 14:44desire for that is going [snorts] down
- 14:46drastically and that I can manage it so
- 14:48much better because I'm truly satisfied
- 14:51with the collection that I've built and
- 14:53with the perfume that I have. And I'm no
- 14:55longer looking for expanding that
- 14:57collection. The next thing that I've
- 14:59stopped spending money on is people
- 15:01pleasing. And this can be a little bit
- 15:03more challenging than the rest of the
- 15:05categories and a little bit different
- 15:06than what I've been mentioning so far
- 15:08because we all want to be liked. We all
- 15:11want to be respected by other people. We
- 15:13all want to show respect to other
- 15:15people. We don't want to hurt anybody's
- 15:17feelings. But when you have built a
- 15:19strong awareness to how you feel and how
- 15:21you react to the situation, it's going
- 15:23to be so much easier for you to control
- 15:26how you react in situations when you are
- 15:29asked or when you are used
- 15:31to pay for something. For example, I go
- 15:34to a dance class since December last
- 15:36year, I believe. So, I go to this dance
- 15:38class four times a month, um once a
- 15:41week. And in the dance class, we work on
- 15:43a show together. We are working on a
- 15:45show that's called Chicago, as you know.
- 15:47Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Oh, yes, the both. I'm
- 15:49sure you know.
- 15:50All that jazz.
- 15:52Anyway, um so, we are um performing,
- 15:54right? We are group of performers. I am
- 15:56in the dance cast, but we also have
- 15:59singers and we also have actors and we
- 16:01are running a show.
- 16:03And in the past few months, I've been
- 16:05feeling like I no longer enjoy going to
- 16:08that dance and I no longer enjoy
- 16:10practicing the show and I'm not excited
- 16:12for the show actually that comes up in
- 16:14July. And I kept going and what This is
- 16:17what I realized that I kept going
- 16:18because I didn't want to disappoint
- 16:20the people that I work with. I didn't
- 16:22want to disappoint the girls in the cast
- 16:24because
- 16:25now what they're going to be doing and
- 16:27like
- 16:28you know, I have solo parts and I have
- 16:30uh I'm in front row in many
- 16:33in in many numbers and I didn't want to
- 16:35disappoint the girls that dance with me.
- 16:38And I felt also guilty in front of the
- 16:40choreographer and the woman who runs the
- 16:42show
- 16:43because I didn't want to hurt their
- 16:45feeling too and tell them like listen, I
- 16:47no longer enjoy coming here. But, I kept
- 16:50paying for that. So, I was paying on
- 16:52something that I don't enjoy just not to
- 16:55hurt other people. This was the reason.
- 16:57So, to cut long story short, I am still
- 16:59going to that class, but only because I
- 17:02was willing to stop. Because I was
- 17:04willing to stop and I called them and I
- 17:06said, you know, I'm so sorry. But, I no
- 17:08longer enjoy this and I don't want to
- 17:10pay for this anymore and I don't want to
- 17:11pay with this not only with my money,
- 17:13but also with my time. And so, I have to
- 17:15pull back and um
- 17:18please remove me from the cast. And once
- 17:22I did that, they And I'm sorry that I
- 17:24haven't done that sooner. Like I'm
- 17:26regret regretting that because once I
- 17:28did that, they told me, "Wait, like what
- 17:30we don't understand the problem. You are
- 17:32front row, you have solo parts. Like
- 17:34what's going on? You You're one of our,
- 17:36you know, lead dancers. What's
- 17:37happening?" And I told them like I don't
- 17:40like this, I don't like that, I don't
- 17:41feel good when this happen with that
- 17:43happens during the class. And to my
- 17:46surprise, they fixed they they said,
- 17:48"Thank you for letting us know." And
- 17:50they fixed things. And from that class
- 17:52and on, things look completely different
- 17:55and I truly thoroughly enjoy the class
- 17:57now. So this was my example, but for you
- 17:59it can be anything else. And also
- 18:01something that I think that we we can
- 18:03all agree on is that sometimes we say
- 18:05yes to gatherings or to going out to a
- 18:08restaurant or to go into a celebration
- 18:10of any sort when other people are
- 18:12initiating that, but you have to pay for
- 18:15being there. Like maybe you have to put
- 18:17a certain sum of money to be there or if
- 18:20you want to go to or everybody are going
- 18:22to a restaurant, but you are in a little
- 18:24bit of a tighter month financially and
- 18:26you have to save money. And so for me,
- 18:29when my girls are saying like, "Hey, you
- 18:31want to go out?"
- 18:32I say, "You know what? Let's just keep
- 18:34it a little bit more casual. Let's meet
- 18:36at my place or in yours and have pizza
- 18:38together." And this is something that is
- 18:40very cost-effective and we're still
- 18:43having such a great time together. And
- 18:45we don't have to go out and have an
- 18:47expensive outing. I can buy us a whole
- 18:49bottle of wine to share between all of
- 18:52us that will cost very similarly to one
- 18:55glass of wine that you'll get in a
- 18:56restaurant. And we can still enjoy that
- 18:58wine and we can still enjoy cheese and
- 19:00we can still enjoy beautiful things or
- 19:02good pizza while spending time in a
- 19:05little bit more modest surroundings. So
- 19:08don't be afraid to redirect people to
- 19:11say like, "This is not exactly what I
- 19:14want or not exactly what I have in mind
- 19:16and I would rather that we'll do this or
- 19:18I would rather that this will happen.
- 19:20So, this is why I mean that I no longer
- 19:22pay for people pleasing. So, there are
- 19:24many other things that I no longer spend
- 19:26money on. I don't know if in the future
- 19:28I'll miss and want to spend money on
- 19:30some of them like on my nails or perfume
- 19:33maybe, I don't know. But right now I
- 19:35feel so content and so satisfied with
- 19:38the routines that I have that I don't
- 19:40feel the need to spend money on those
- 19:43things anymore. If you have something
- 19:45similar that you've kind of realized
- 19:46over time that you stopped paying for
- 19:48either naturally or either you choose to
- 19:51stop spending money on it, then please
- 19:54let me know. I'd love to hear those kind
- 19:55of things and maybe it will make me
- 19:57realize and remember in more things that
- 20:00I have stopped spending money on. For
- 20:01example, I can just on top of my head, I
- 20:04can tell you that I no longer buy
- 20:05candles. I have enough candles and to my
- 20:08surprise I don't go through them all
- 20:11that often as I thought I would and many
- 20:13years ago what you know what I used to
- 20:14do? I used to get Bath & Body Works
- 20:16candles. I no longer do that. I mean
- 20:18they take for me they take forever to go
- 20:21through because I kind of most of the
- 20:22time light them when I have people over.
- 20:25Nail polishes as I mentioned are another
- 20:27example. Stationery products I used to
- 20:29get so many notebooks and little
- 20:31notepads and greeting cards and washi
- 20:34tapes and stuff like that. I I don't
- 20:37spend money on that anymore not even on
- 20:39pens. If I get if I can get free pens
- 20:42for my job, I'll get them at my job. If
- 20:44I can get free notebooks at my job, I'll
- 20:46get them at my job. I don't want to be
- 20:48spending money on any of those things.
- 20:50So, these are just couple of examples
- 20:51that I thought that will be fun to
- 20:53mention.
- 20:54Also, I don't spend any more money on
- 20:56dog toys because he only uses this one.
- 20:59I have I have a basket full of dog toys.
- 21:02He doesn't use them.
- 21:04He'll go with this one which is filthy
- 21:06and I'm trying to take this away from
- 21:07him to wash it, but
- 21:08>> [snorts]
- 21:08>> he'll break the house. Anyway, hopefully
- 21:10you enjoyed this video and I'll see you
- 21:12in the next one. Bye for now.
