- 0:00Early in the morning, engineer Jason is
- 0:02fishing at the pier. After getting
- 0:03nothing for days, he finally catches
- 0:05something, but the fish is too small, so
- 0:07he throws it back into the water. Then
- 0:09Jason sees a storm approaching, so he
- 0:11decides to go home. In the suburbs, it's
- 0:13already raining and all the neighbors
- 0:14are rushing to get home. Outside his
- 0:16house, Jason tries to open his garage,
- 0:18but the door isn't working. He has no
- 0:20choice but to leave the car outside.
- 0:22Inside, Jason says hello to the elderly
- 0:24dog Cassidy and notices that all the
- 0:26mail is debt collector letters,
- 0:27revealing he's currently unemployed.
- 0:29Then he brings donuts to his wife Anne
- 0:31and their children immediately join
- 0:32them. They try to play with their tablet
- 0:34while they have breakfast. However, the
- 0:35internet is down. Jason blames it on the
- 0:37house falling apart and Anne shows him
- 0:39an email from a repairman who has looked
- 0:41at the pictures she sent and has
- 0:42concluded the house foundation is
- 0:43sinking. The only thing holding the
- 0:45building together is the chimney. After
- 0:47breakfast, the family gets ready to get
- 0:48their Christmas tree. However, when they
- 0:50try to open the front door, they can't
- 0:52even make it budge. Jason then tries the
- 0:54back door, but it won't open either.
- 0:56Getting desperate, the whole family
- 0:57starts trying to open every window and
- 0:59door to no avail. The parents want to
- 1:01request help, but there's no internet or
- 1:02phone signal.
- 1:03>> [music]
- 1:03>> While Cassidy refuses to stop barking, a
- 1:05desperate Jason throws himself at the
- 1:07door and still nothing happens. Then he
- 1:09starts hitting the windows and manages
- 1:10to crack them, but none of them break.
- 1:12When they look outside, they see their
- 1:14neighbors trying to get their attention
- 1:15with a mirror, and they realize that
- 1:17other families are trapped in their
- 1:18homes, too. At that moment, they see
- 1:20Susan running down the street. They try
- 1:22to get their [music] attention, but she
- 1:23can't hear them. When she arrives at her
- 1:25house, she discovers she can't get in
- 1:26and her husband is trapped inside, so
- 1:28she immediately leaves to get help. As
- 1:30hours pass, the family tries to keep
- 1:32themselves entertained. Jason uses tools
- 1:34on the garage door, but it still won't
- 1:36budge. They discuss their neighbors and
- 1:38remember that one of them has a boat. A
- 1:39couple on a house write on a mirror that
- 1:41they're stuck after just a one-night
- 1:42stand. Meanwhile, the Richardsons begin
- 1:44communicating with a whiteboard, so
- 1:46Jason answers by using his kids green
- 1:48board.
- 1:48>> [music]
- 1:48>> The Richardsons think the government did
- 1:50this for their safety, while the boat
- 1:51owner theorizes it was aliens. Everyone
- 1:54wonders if it's just their city or the
- 1:55whole world. That night, when Jason puts
- 1:57Ruth to bed, she theorizes that the rain
- 1:59caused this because it looks different.
- 2:01Then Jason goes to his room and Ann
- 2:03admits she's on the verge of a nervous
- 2:04breakdown. Jason assures her they'll be
- 2:06fine and reveals he has a gun in the
- 2:08closet. Ann freaks out since he never
- 2:10told her about it, but also asks him how
- 2:11to use it. [music] Instead of sleeping,
- 2:13Jason spends hours in front of the
- 2:14mirror trying to open the garage with
- 2:16the remote, but it only opens the car
- 2:17trunk. Then he drills holes in the front
- 2:19door and is shocked to see water drops
- 2:21moving strangely to cover them. When Ann
- 2:23comes to check on him, he's made holes
- 2:25in the wall and floor, too. The result
- 2:26is always the same. A barrier of water
- 2:28is stopping him from breaking through,
- 2:30although air is still coming through the
- 2:31vents. Jason believes that the cause of
- 2:33this isn't man-made. He can hear some
- 2:35weird noises in the chimney, but when he
- 2:37looks inside, there's nothing. The next
- 2:39morning it's still raining and the house
- 2:40continues to be sealed. The family has a
- 2:42discussion on how they'll proceed from
- 2:44now on. The kids have plenty of toys,
- 2:46yet the parents only have old records
- 2:48and two DVDs, and tells the kids to keep
- 2:50doing their chores and washing daily.
- 2:52They'll also start rationing the food so
- 2:53it'll last around 2 months. They'll have
- 2:55to be careful with the electricity, gas,
- 2:57[music] and water since they may not
- 2:58last long. Cassidy keeps scratching the
- 3:00door because he wants to relieve
- 3:02himself,
- 3:02>> [music]
- 3:02>> so Jason has to teach him to do it
- 3:04inside the house. On day four, Jason
- 3:06tries to make their kids pretend they're
- 3:08at school, but their hearts aren't into
- 3:09it. Instead, he decides to teach them
- 3:11something useful for survival, how to
- 3:13gut a fish. Since they don't have fish,
- 3:15they use dolls. The kids have lots of
- 3:17fun and also learn that Jason used to
- 3:19have his own boat, but he had to sell it
- 3:21when they were born. In the afternoon,
- 3:23Jason and the Richardsons agree to start
- 3:24a game of board telephone so they can
- 3:26find out how far this has spread. On day
- 3:28seven, the lights start to flicker and
- 3:30saves all the vegetable seeds and
- 3:32leftovers hoping to start growing
- 3:33plants. Jason learns from the
- 3:35Richardsons that five blocks are being
- 3:37affected and they chat for a while using
- 3:38the boards. Unfortunately, the
- 3:40Richardsons have no food left, but Jason
- 3:42has no way to help them. On day 14, Ruth
- 3:44keeps making drawings about the storm.
- 3:46They show weird beings under the rain
- 3:48and faces on the drops. Suddenly, she
- 3:50notices a strange shadow down the
- 3:51street, but gets distracted by the
- 3:53raindrops moving on the window, even
- 3:55following the tip of her pencil.
- 3:56>> [music]
- 3:56>> When she looks at the street again, the
- 3:58shadow is gone. As days pass, the family
- 4:01keeps themselves busy with activities
- 4:02like dancing, exercising, watching
- 4:04movies, [music] racing around the house,
- 4:06playing cards, and reading. Ann's garden
- 4:08is growing well, and Jason decides to
- 4:10burn all the debt mail. For holiday
- 4:12decorations, they use some random
- 4:14objects to create an improvised tree. On
- 4:16day 30, [music] Ruth looks out the
- 4:17window and says the rain walker is back
- 4:19because she always visits when it rains.
- 4:21Her brother Graham doesn't believe her,
- 4:22but when he looks out, he also sees a
- 4:24shadow on the street. Scared, he claims
- 4:26it must be just an animal. During
- 4:28dinner, the kids complain because
- 4:29they're tired of eating the same thing
- 4:31every day. Ruth says that she saw a
- 4:33friendly being outside and believes she
- 4:34was trying to communicate, but her
- 4:36parents blame it on her imagination.
- 4:38When Ruth [music] gets upset, Jason
- 4:39accidentally snaps. So, Ann tries to
- 4:41cheer the family up with cookies. Sadly,
- 4:43they don't taste good because they don't
- 4:44have sugar. After the kids go to bed,
- 4:46the parents decide to smoke before
- 4:48watching the same movie again. However,
- 4:50Ann is tired of it, so they decide to
- 4:51lie down by the garden door and look at
- 4:53the stars instead. To their surprise,
- 4:55they notice a wolf running in their
- 4:57garden. The next morning, the family
- 4:58exchanges Christmas gifts. It's just
- 5:00stuff they found around the house, but
- 5:02it allows them to keep the holiday
- 5:03cheer. When Ruth looks out the window,
- 5:05she sees Mrs. Richardson collapsing.
- 5:07Jason immediately takes the kids [music]
- 5:09away while Ann watches Mr. Richardson
- 5:11run to his wife's side to discover she's
- 5:12dead. That afternoon, Jason gives
- 5:14Cassidy the last of his medicine. In the
- 5:16middle of the night, Ruth wakes up and
- 5:18goes to the living room to get her toys,
- 5:20>> [music]
- 5:20>> but she doesn't notice running by the
- 5:21window. Suddenly, she hears a noise and
- 5:23opens the curtains to see a
- 5:24blood-stained Susan desperately asking
- 5:26for help with a knife in her hand. Ruth
- 5:28screams in fear, and the whole family is
- 5:29awakened. Susan begins to pound on the
- 5:32door and windows, still trying to get
- 5:33in. She keeps repeating that everyone is
- 5:35dead and tells the family don't let them
- 5:37see you. She also says that they are
- 5:39here and no help is coming. Suddenly,
- 5:41something in the shadows drags a
- 5:42screaming Susan away, and the family
- 5:43notices various beings walking down the
- 5:45street. A bright flash of light then
- 5:47fills the area, and when it finally
- 5:48stops, the creatures and Susan are gone.
- 5:51After closing the curtains, Jason looks
- 5:53at Ruth's drawings, and the girl swears
- 5:54the creature she saw seemed nice. Jason
- 5:57tells her these creatures aren't
- 5:58friendly, and from now on everyone must
- 5:59stay away from the windows. That night
- 6:01they all sleep together. Sometime later,
- 6:03Jason looks outside and is devastated to
- 6:05notice that Mr. Richardson has also
- 6:06died. One house has put up a sign saying
- 6:09they're out of medicine, and the
- 6:10one-night stand duo is constantly
- 6:11fighting. Meanwhile, the kids are
- 6:13exercising. Graham only runs, but Ruth
- 6:15hangs from the ceiling to do aerial
- 6:17silk. Suddenly, the chimney cap falls
- 6:19down, so Ruth volunteers to climb up and
- 6:21see if there's a way out. The family
- 6:23firmly holds the silk as Ruth makes her
- 6:25way up, and the walls keep cracking
- 6:26around her.
- 6:27>> [music]
- 6:27>> At the top, the pipes don't allow Ruth
- 6:29to go through, but she can at least
- 6:30stick her hand out, which means the
- 6:31chimney isn't sealed. After Ruth safely
- 6:33returns, the family [music] hears
- 6:35Cassidy cry, and they realize he's in
- 6:36pain because his medicine ran out. Ann
- 6:38takes the kids to watch a movie and
- 6:40makes the TV really loud so they won't
- 6:41hear Jason [music] shoot Cassidy in the
- 6:43garage to put him out of his misery.
- 6:45Afterward, Ann wants to cremate him in
- 6:46the chimney, but Jason decides to keep
- 6:48the body in the freezer in case things
- 6:49get very bad and they need meat. First,
- 6:51he chops it all, then he freezes the
- 6:53actual flesh. All the organs are put in
- 6:55a bag, and Jason almost throws it in the
- 6:57trash, but when he sees the wolf in the
- 6:58garden, he decides to throw the bag out
- 7:00the chimney. The wolf immediately
- 7:02approaches it, but before it can eat, it
- 7:04starts to rain, so it runs away. As
- 7:06weeks continue to pass, the family
- 7:07closes all the curtains whenever it
- 7:09starts raining, and they move away from
- 7:10the windows. One day, Ruth realizes she
- 7:12forgot her plant on the windowsill and
- 7:14rushes to grab it, causing the creature
- 7:16to pound on the glass. Everyone freezes
- 7:18in fear while they hear the monster
- 7:19roar, and thankfully, it walks away.
- 7:21After 3 months, the light flickering
- 7:23gets worse, and the family doesn't have
- 7:24much food left. Ruth begins crying
- 7:26because she's hungry, and Ann yells at
- 7:27her as she stops her from getting to the
- 7:29fridge. Jason tells his wife to let her
- 7:31see, so Ann moves, and Ruth opens the
- 7:33fridge, only to discover it's empty. And
- 7:35then opens the cupboards, which are
- 7:37empty, [music] too. Ruth slams the
- 7:38fridge closed and leaves in a huff. All
- 7:40this stress finally takes its toll on
- 7:42Ann, who suddenly collapses. Graham runs
- 7:45to scream in his room while Ruth cries
- 7:46on her bed. Jason promises they'll
- 7:48survive, but Ann thinks they'll watch
- 7:49[music] their kids die. At that moment,
- 7:51Graham returns with his pet fish, which
- 7:53he has gutted for consumption. Ruth also
- 7:55joins them, and they hug each other for
- 7:56comfort. A noise outside makes Jason
- 7:58look, and he discovers that the wolf has
- 8:00finally eaten the dog's organs, which
- 8:02[music] gives him an idea. He builds a
- 8:03trap using some random objects like a
- 8:05skateboard and puts a piece of dog meat
- 8:07on it before sending it outside through
- 8:08the chimney. A fox comes by and grabs
- 8:10the meat, but the trap reacts after it's
- 8:12gone. Jason does some modifications to
- 8:14the trap, and the next time it does
- 8:16manage to catch the fox. However, when
- 8:17they try to pull it in, the weight
- 8:19breaks the silk, and the fox runs away.
- 8:21Next, he uses a car piece to make a
- 8:22small cage, and this time the bait is
- 8:24vegetables. A squirrel quickly falls in
- 8:26it, and its light weight allows the
- 8:27family to pull it through the chimney.
- 8:29Now, they have squirrel meat to eat.
- 8:31Afterward, Jason pulls off the boards
- 8:32from the living room floor to access the
- 8:34soil, so they start an indoor garden.
- 8:36Months continue to pass, and the family
- 8:38survives thanks to Jason hunting a
- 8:39variety of small animals like birds and
- 8:41rabbits. One night, power finally goes
- 8:43out in the whole neighborhood, so their
- 8:45evenings are spent in candlelight.
- 8:47Eventually, 5 years pass.
- 8:48>> [music]
- 8:48>> The kids are now teenagers, and all
- 8:50their neighbors are dead. Graham has
- 8:51become an expert piano player, the
- 8:53garden takes over most of the living
- 8:55room, a purifier cleans the rainwater,
- 8:57and Jason has improved the traps so they
- 8:58are automatic. Plants are overgrown all
- 9:00over the neighborhood, and many wild
- 9:02animals roam the streets.
- 9:03>> [music]
- 9:03>> One day, Ann notices that the house is
- 9:05falling apart faster. She theorizes that
- 9:08the barrier keeping them inside is also
- 9:09keeping the house together, so it may
- 9:11sink [music] soon. Jason calls the
- 9:12family to the garage and shows them that
- 9:14he's fixed his car. Graham says it's a
- 9:16waste of time, so Jason immediately
- 9:18scolds him, [music] explaining they need
- 9:19projects to stay sane and tools to be
- 9:21ready to go out when the rain finally
- 9:22stops. After an irritated Graham walks
- 9:24away, Ann points out that the kids'
- 9:26attitude is getting worse because they
- 9:28didn't have a proper childhood. She
- 9:29tells Jason that he needs to be a father
- 9:31and not just a fighter. She also admits
- 9:33she misses her husband. Later, Jason
- 9:35tells Ruth that she needs to stop
- 9:36[music] hanging drawings on the attic
- 9:37window because she'll expose the family
- 9:39to the monsters. An argument ensues, but
- 9:41they all shut up when they see a monster
- 9:43at the door. While the family runs to
- 9:45hide, water begins coming inside through
- 9:47the door gap and moves the knob, [music]
- 9:48opening the door for the first time in
- 9:50years. The monster enters the house and
- 9:52begins looking for them, dropping a
- 9:53creepy spit that immediately
- 9:54contaminates the water supply. Ann
- 9:56worries about the plants and wants to
- 9:58disconnect the sprinkler, but as soon as
- 9:59she moves the creature hears her and she
- 10:01has to hide again. Although it gets
- 10:03pretty close, it doesn't see her and it
- 10:04keeps moving. Its limbs keep piercing
- 10:06the floor where Ruth is hiding. Luckily,
- 10:08they don't reach her. Soon the spit is
- 10:10killing the garden and some drops fall
- 10:11on Ruth's face, too. At that moment, a
- 10:13noise is heard outside and more
- 10:14creatures appear at the window. The
- 10:16monster in the house immediately leaves
- 10:18to follow them. Seeing the door open,
- 10:20Graham runs as fast as possible, but
- 10:22Jason stops him because the monsters are
- 10:23still nearby and the door closes. Then
- 10:25Ruth touches the drops that fell on her
- 10:27face and realizes it's not spit, it's
- 10:29just seawater. Jason notices that it
- 10:31isn't raining anymore and tries to open
- 10:33the door, but it's sealed again.
- 10:34>> [music]
- 10:34>> Later, Ruth reads a book about sea myths
- 10:36and concludes these monsters aren't
- 10:37aliens. They come from the ocean and
- 10:39this is their world. Jason corrects her
- 10:41saying this place is her home.
- 10:43Afterward, the parents confirm that all
- 10:44the plants are dead and the water is
- 10:46contaminated. [music]
- 10:47Jason thinks they can start over, but
- 10:48Ann wants him to confront reality, so an
- 10:50argument ensues. At the same time, the
- 10:52trap catches a ferret and brings it
- 10:53inside. When Ruth picks it up, [music]
- 10:55the ferret bites her hand and runs away.
- 10:58Her parents hear her scream in pain and
- 10:59rush to her side, worried about a
- 11:01possible infection. Furious, Jason grabs
- 11:03the ferret and kills it. In the evening,
- 11:06Ruth is burning with fever and can't
- 11:07leave the bed. They give her the last
- 11:09clean water, but she needs medicine. A
- 11:11desperate Jason gets in his car and
- 11:12repeatedly slams it into the garage
- 11:14door, but it still won't open.
- 11:16Eventually, the car crashes and Jason
- 11:17hits his head, so he gets dizzy. The
- 11:20family hears the noise and rushes to
- 11:21help him out. Jason can barely walk and
- 11:23collapses on the floor, only to notice
- 11:25some cracks. This snaps him out of it
- 11:27and he grabs a tool to test how deep the
- 11:29crack is. Then he runs around the house
- 11:31to test the other cracks, noticing
- 11:33they're getting deeper. He concludes the
- 11:34house has been shifting and this could
- 11:36provide a way out. In the bathroom, he
- 11:38breaks the floor tiles until he finds a
- 11:39pipe leading to the sewer system. This
- 11:41should take them to the Richardson's
- 11:43house, which should have medicine since
- 11:44Mr. Richardson was a dentist. Jason
- 11:46doesn't fit in the pipe, so Ann
- 11:47volunteers to go with a flashlight and a
- 11:50camera for the family to guide her and
- 11:51crosses the sewers until she finds a
- 11:53wall. Thankfully, it's loose enough for
- 11:55her to push the bricks and go through.
- 11:56At that moment, the family loses the
- 11:58camera signal and Jason goes crazy as he
- 12:00tries to make the pipe bigger. Graham
- 12:02runs to the window and calls his dad
- 12:03when he sees that Ann is safe in the
- 12:04neighbor's house. Looking around, Ann
- 12:07finds lots of overgrown plants and Mrs.
- 12:08Richardson's rotting body. There are
- 12:10stains on the wall that make it seem
- 12:12like the house was flooded for years. As
- 12:14it starts to rain, Ann finds the
- 12:15medicine and gets ready to leave, only
- 12:17to discover that the monsters have
- 12:18returned. Soon the creatures are
- 12:20entering the house, so Ann carefully
- 12:22sneaks around to make it to the
- 12:23basement, which is already flooding.
- 12:25Suddenly, she's startled by a monstrous
- 12:26face, but it's actually Mr. Richardson's
- 12:28body. Her scream gets the creature's
- 12:30attention, so she has to hurry up. She
- 12:32swims in the sewer water until she finds
- 12:34the pipe, but unfortunately, a monster
- 12:36finds her anyway and immediately fires
- 12:38the gun at it. However, the bullets do
- 12:40no damage and the creature disarms her.
- 12:42The family begins pulling the silk, so
- 12:43Ann finally gets to escape through the
- 12:45pipe and the monster is climbing after
- 12:47her. Jason quickly breaks the wall and
- 12:49lets the debris block the pipe just in
- 12:50time. Meanwhile, Ann gives the medicine
- 12:52to Ruth and she starts feeling better.
- 12:54Jason wants the family to hide in the
- 12:56attic while he prepares to distract the
- 12:57monsters, guessing they'll come soon
- 12:59since they know they're in there now.
- 13:00However, Graham says he's tired of
- 13:02hiding because this isn't living, it's
- 13:04surviving. Ann agrees, so they decide to
- 13:06fight the monsters as a family.
- 13:07>> [music]
- 13:08>> They work together to prepare a big trap
- 13:09that hopefully will also help them
- 13:11escape. Suddenly, a glowing round cloud
- 13:13appears in the sky and water starts
- 13:14flooding the house from every possible
- 13:16spot, like the chimney, the sinks, the
- 13:18toilet, and the bathroom pipe. Jason is
- 13:20pushed back by the chimney burst while
- 13:22Ann pushes Ruth out of the way when a
- 13:23wave comes down the stairs, dragging
- 13:25Graham. All this water allows the
- 13:27monster to get inside and move more
- 13:28quickly because it can now swim and
- 13:30waits until the creature jumps out to
- 13:32attack and throws a bomb at it, setting
- 13:33it on fire. It dives in again to get rid
- 13:36of the flames and its tentacles bring
- 13:37him down. Jason tries to shoot a harpoon
- 13:39at it, but he misses and the tentacles
- 13:41shake him around before throwing him
- 13:42into the water and swims fast to rescue
- 13:44her husband and they reunite with the
- 13:46kids on the stairs. The water is rising
- 13:48too fast, so they need to go to the
- 13:49attic, but Graham will first retrieve
- 13:51the harpoon. While the water slips
- 13:53through the house cracks, Graham dives
- 13:55in and retrieves the harpoon from the
- 13:56kitchen. He can hear the monster
- 13:58approaching, so he hides while holding
- 13:59his breath. At that moment, the family
- 14:01makes a hole in the ceiling and pulls
- 14:02him out before the monster could reach
- 14:04him. The tentacles break through as well
- 14:06and Jason hits them with a hammer until
- 14:07they can all run to the attic. The water
- 14:09soon floods this room, too, so the
- 14:11family holds their breath and holds each
- 14:13other in place. When the monster finally
- 14:15finds them, they pull a rope connected
- 14:16to the harpoon before firing it and this
- 14:18time it gets stuck on the creature. The
- 14:20other end of the rope is linked to the
- 14:21car, which is activated by the shot. The
- 14:23vehicle begins to pull the monster away
- 14:25and all the pressure is making the water
- 14:27widen the cracks to absorb it, so the
- 14:28flood leaves the attic and drags the
- 14:30family down as well. They immediately
- 14:32try the front door, but it still won't
- 14:33open. The creature is stuck on the stair
- 14:35railing, so Jason grabs a knife and
- 14:37threatens to kill it if it doesn't open
- 14:38the door. Ruth stops him, saying they'll
- 14:41never leave if the creature dies. Jason
- 14:43cuts the rope instead and drops the
- 14:44knife, so the monster opens the door.
- 14:47After 5 years, the family finally runs
- 14:49out of the house and finds themselves
- 14:50surrounded by the creatures. When
- 14:52they're about to attack, the nice one
- 14:54stops them and they run away together.
- 14:55Afterward, the house finally sinks into
- 14:57the ground, leaving nothing but a huge
- 14:59crater. Then, [music] the sun finally
- 15:00comes out for good and the family climbs
- 15:02on a truck to watch the monster swim
- 15:04back to the ocean. The neighbor's boat
- 15:05is still in good condition, [music]
- 15:07so the family leaves as well. To their
- 15:09surprise, a survivor contacts them on
- 15:11the radio. [music]
