- 0:00hello and welcome back to my
- 0:03channel so we all love personality right
- 0:06we get to learn a little bit about
- 0:07ourselves
- 0:08and frankly who doesn't love that
- 0:11personality
- 0:12is roughly defined by psychologists as
- 0:14these
- 0:15stable enduring patterns of thoughts
- 0:17feelings and behavior
- 0:19so it's basically what are you like if
- 0:22you think of all these adjectives that
- 0:23you use to describe somebody
- 0:25that's basically what personality is so
- 0:27you could describe somebody as being
- 0:29funny
- 0:30social outgoing uh reserved emotional
- 0:34sensitive or organized productive
- 0:37efficient friendly there's all these
- 0:40different adjectives that we would use
- 0:41to describe somebody
- 0:42then this is basically what personality
- 0:45is so just what somebody is
- 0:46like over time and over situations
- 0:49but a question i get a lot from students
- 0:51and just regular people
- 0:53is whether personality is this fixed and
- 0:56stable concept or whether it's something
- 0:58that
- 0:59can be flexible and be shaped and the
- 1:02answer is
- 1:03is that yes personality is flexible
- 1:06it usually doesn't change extremely
- 1:09quickly
- 1:10it usually takes time and experiences
- 1:13to shape your personality but there are
- 1:15many different factors that do
- 1:17shape your personality so while
- 1:19personality is considered to be
- 1:20relatively stable
- 1:22it's not a fixed or completely stable
- 1:26concept there is definitely some room
- 1:28for growth there
- 1:30room for improvement i guess you could
- 1:32say
- 1:33so the person that you are today is
- 1:36probably going to be really similar to
- 1:38who you are tomorrow or next week
- 1:40but if you compare yourself today to who
- 1:42you were 10 years ago
- 1:43you're probably going to start to see
- 1:45more differences because there have been
- 1:47a lot of experiences that you've had
- 1:48over the past 10 years
- 1:50you're not quite the same person so in
- 1:52today's video we're going to be looking
- 1:54at
- 1:54the different factors that shape your
- 1:57personality and the roles that they play
- 1:59so number one is your genetics yes we
- 2:03all
- 2:03start with something so back in the day
- 2:07behavioral psychologists specifically
- 2:09used to believe that when you're born
- 2:11you're like a blank slate you can become
- 2:13whatever it is that the environment
- 2:15shapes you into
- 2:16and we now know that that's not
- 2:18completely true you do inherit a set of
- 2:20genetic codes from both your mother and
- 2:22your father
- 2:23that you can kind of think of as just
- 2:25the basic
- 2:26blueprint for the type of person that
- 2:29you're going to become
- 2:31with that being said genetics are not
- 2:33the be-all
- 2:34end-all you are not born the person that
- 2:38you will always
- 2:39be there are certainly changes that are
- 2:42going to happen
- 2:43to that blueprint depending on the type
- 2:45of environment that you are
- 2:46in but it gives your body something to
- 2:50start with so you can definitely inherit
- 2:54various personality tendencies from your
- 2:56parents
- 2:57or from your genetic lineage and you are
- 3:00not this
- 3:01blank slate so it gives your body
- 3:03something to work off of although it is
- 3:04definitely not
- 3:06the end game the second thing that
- 3:08shapes your personality
- 3:10is your culture and your environment and
- 3:13this makes a lot of sense
- 3:14if you are in a culture where
- 3:16personality traits
- 3:18like autonomy and assertiveness and
- 3:21extroversion
- 3:22are really emphasized then that's going
- 3:25to shape you into being a more
- 3:27social outgoing assertive type
- 3:31of person it just makes sense right
- 3:33that's the cultural expectation
- 3:35and that's going to push you into being
- 3:37more so that type of person but if you
- 3:39are in a culture that
- 3:40really values being friendly and
- 3:43agreeable
- 3:44and working well with others and being
- 3:47more dependent
- 3:48on others then it's going to kind of
- 3:50shape you into being
- 3:52more so of that type of person
- 3:55now if you are naturally let's say a
- 3:58very um introverted kind of person
- 4:02right both of your parents are huge
- 4:04introverts you're a huge introvert
- 4:07being in a more extroverted outgoing
- 4:09kind of culture
- 4:10is not going to make you into this huge
- 4:13extrovert
- 4:14it just might kind of shape you into a
- 4:16more extroverted person
- 4:18than what you may have been otherwise so
- 4:20keep that in mind
- 4:21really both your genetics and your
- 4:24culture
- 4:25environment are going to interact
- 4:28together
- 4:29to form your personality and you can
- 4:31also think of it this way if
- 4:33you yourself grew up in a completely
- 4:36different culture
- 4:37you would not be quite the same person
- 4:39that you are today because your
- 4:40experiences your environment
- 4:42really do make up a big piece of who you
- 4:46are of course you would still have the
- 4:48same genetics so you wouldn't be
- 4:50a completely different person but you
- 4:52would definitely be a different person
- 4:54because you'd have a different
- 4:55environment
- 4:56the third factor that shapes your
- 4:58personality is the situation that you
- 5:01are
- 5:01in and this is a question i get a lot
- 5:03when it comes to personality
- 5:05well if we behave differently in
- 5:07different situations
- 5:09does that mean personality is still a
- 5:11stable concept
- 5:13so i want you to think about this are
- 5:15you exactly the same person at home
- 5:18when you're with your family you're very
- 5:19comfortable or you're by yourself
- 5:22compared to when you're out with your
- 5:24friends
- 5:25at a restaurant or at a bar or wherever
- 5:27it might be the answer is probably no
- 5:29you're not quite exactly the same you
- 5:31behave in different ways
- 5:33depending on the situation and then when
- 5:35you're at work right you're
- 5:37you're kind of a different person there
- 5:38too maybe you have to be more
- 5:40professional maybe you have to
- 5:42kind of socialize with people who you
- 5:44might not like as much and things like
- 5:46that
- 5:46but depending on the situation it's not
- 5:49that you
- 5:50are a different person okay i don't want
- 5:52you to think of it like that
- 5:53you are the same person with the same
- 5:55personality
- 5:57but depending on the situation that you
- 5:59are in
- 6:00it's going to kind of shape and bring
- 6:03out
- 6:03different parts of your personality just
- 6:05depending on what
- 6:07is expected so when you're at work for
- 6:09example
- 6:10things like productiveness organization
- 6:13teamwork are really going to be
- 6:14emphasized
- 6:15so it's going to kind of try to draw
- 6:18those parts of you out
- 6:20and if you're not a very conscientious
- 6:22person well it might kind of
- 6:24force you to act in a more conscientious
- 6:27way
- 6:27which could over time shape your
- 6:29personality
- 6:30but when you're out with friends right
- 6:32that's a totally different situation it
- 6:34might call for more
- 6:35outgoing behavior being friendly
- 6:37sociable
- 6:38happy interactive and it's going to kind
- 6:41of draw
- 6:42that out of you and if you are an
- 6:44extreme introvert let's say and you're
- 6:46put into that type of situation
- 6:48you're going to start to behave in more
- 6:50extroverted ways than what you might
- 6:52normally
- 6:53and it will kind of start to shape your
- 6:54personality if you are put into
- 6:56situations like that
- 6:58frequently over time so the situation
- 7:00definitely shapes your personality
- 7:03the way that you behave in one situation
- 7:04is not going to be how you behave
- 7:06in a different situation the fourth
- 7:09factor that shapes your personality
- 7:10is major life events now we all
- 7:14have major things that happen to us in
- 7:16our lives
- 7:17whether it's the death of a loved one
- 7:20or the birth of our child or getting
- 7:23married
- 7:24or uprooting our whole life and moving
- 7:28to a new country
- 7:29it might be a traumatic life event it
- 7:31could be a whole lot of different things
- 7:33but there are these major moments in our
- 7:35lives
- 7:36that shape who we become and this makes
- 7:39sense
- 7:39when we experience a huge shift in our
- 7:43life a big
- 7:44change that is thrusting us into
- 7:47a new type of environment in some way
- 7:49shape or form
- 7:51and that can change your perspective on
- 7:53life
- 7:54it can change the things that you value
- 7:56it can just change the ways
- 7:58that you look at things the things that
- 8:00are important to you the things that you
- 8:01are exposed to
- 8:03it's going to shift your life in a major
- 8:05way when you experience
- 8:06a huge life event and you will adapt
- 8:10to whatever your new situation is
- 8:13in life when you experience a major life
- 8:15event you're going to
- 8:16naturally adapt and it's under these
- 8:19situations that we sometimes see
- 8:22uh more rapid personality development
- 8:25than what we would normally
- 8:26see so like i said at the beginning of
- 8:28this video usually personality
- 8:30development does not happen extremely
- 8:32quickly it happens
- 8:34over long periods of time that we really
- 8:36start to see differences but when you
- 8:37experience a major life event
- 8:40we might see that change happen much
- 8:42more quickly
- 8:43than normal because it's such a rapid
- 8:45shift
- 8:46in your life that's happened the fifth
- 8:49factor
- 8:49that affects your personality or shapes
- 8:52your personality
- 8:53is your own life choices so if you are
- 8:56somebody who
- 8:57really likes to keep things the same
- 9:00right you don't like to make big moves
- 9:01in your life
- 9:02you like things to be consistent you
- 9:04like to know what to expect
- 9:06then you're not going to choose to put
- 9:09yourself into situations
- 9:11that might shape your personality faster
- 9:14so if you get that big
- 9:15job opportunity in another city you're
- 9:17probably not going to take it because
- 9:19well you'd have to uproot your whole
- 9:20life
- 9:21it might be too much for you but let's
- 9:23say that you are somebody who is more
- 9:25open to these big life
- 9:27changes your choices will more so
- 9:30dictate
- 9:31the things that you are exposed to in
- 9:33your life so maybe you do decide to take
- 9:35that huge job opportunity in another
- 9:37city
- 9:38and now suddenly you're exposed to all
- 9:39of these new ideas new people
- 9:42you have to start over from scratch
- 9:44whatever it might be
- 9:45and those challenges then shape you into
- 9:47the person that you become but what i'm
- 9:48trying to get at is that ultimately you
- 9:50make the decisions in your life
- 9:51you choose where you want to live you
- 9:53choose when to start a family or if you
- 9:56want to start a family you choose who to
- 9:58start a family with
- 9:59right you choose the people that you
- 10:01want to be around who your friends are
- 10:03you choose whether to take opportunities
- 10:05as they are presented to you there are a
- 10:07lot of choices that you yourself
- 10:09make in your everyday life that will
- 10:11determine
- 10:12the situations that you are put in the
- 10:15people you are surrounded by
- 10:17the environment that you're going to be
- 10:19living in
- 10:20right many of these choices are made by
- 10:23you
- 10:23and what usually happens is that people
- 10:25will kind of search out
- 10:27other people and environments that match
- 10:30with them so that make them feel
- 10:32comfortable make them feel validated
- 10:35right they kind of want to be surrounded
- 10:36by things that suit them and that match
- 10:39them
- 10:39but sometimes people choose different
- 10:41things just depending on
- 10:43what type of person they are in life
- 10:45that they want to lead so your choices
- 10:47do matter
- 10:47when it comes to your personality and
- 10:50the sixth and final factor
- 10:51that shapes your personality is just
- 10:55time time in and of itself is going to
- 10:58shape your personality because with
- 11:00time comes more experiences more
- 11:03knowledge
- 11:04more choices that you have to make about
- 11:07the direction that you want your life to
- 11:09take
- 11:09you're going to encounter new things
- 11:12you're going to
- 11:13learn more these things just happen
- 11:15naturally
- 11:16with time and these changes don't have
- 11:19to be
- 11:20incredibly extreme changes so maybe
- 11:24your personality at 20 is still pretty
- 11:27similar to who you
- 11:28are at 60. that could happen it doesn't
- 11:31necessarily have to be these
- 11:32giant leaps and bounds of changes that
- 11:36we see over time some people will change
- 11:38more than
- 11:38others some people will stay relatively
- 11:41consistent
- 11:42it does kind of depend on the person
- 11:43yeah i mean that that's a fact
- 11:46people live different types of lives but
- 11:48generally speaking we are going to see
- 11:50some kind of change in personality as
- 11:53you age as you grow and develop
- 11:55now in terms of changes that we see on
- 11:59average across time this is kind of
- 12:01interesting
- 12:02we see that as people get older they do
- 12:05tend to become more agreeable so more
- 12:08friendly more cooperative more trusting
- 12:10and more conscientious so more organized
- 12:14more productive more efficient they're
- 12:16going to be better with their time
- 12:18we also see that as people age they tend
- 12:21to become
- 12:22less neurotic so they are less consumed
- 12:26with
- 12:26negative emotions they tend to be
- 12:28happier people which is pretty cool
- 12:30they tend to be less anxious and less
- 12:32depressed
- 12:33although there is some mixed research on
- 12:36this i will say
- 12:37and they also tend to be less
- 12:39open-minded so
- 12:41older people do tend to prefer for
- 12:43things to be more stable
- 12:45more consistent they like to know what
- 12:47to expect from their environment
- 12:49and so on and so forth now these are
- 12:52changes that we see
- 12:53happening over time just on average
- 12:58that doesn't mean that it's going to be
- 12:59what you encounter or what you
- 13:01experience
- 13:02this is just the general trend that we
- 13:04see
- 13:05over time so not everyone's personality
- 13:08is guaranteed to shift like that it's
- 13:09just
- 13:10typically what we see in personality
- 13:12research
- 13:13so to sum it all up personality is
- 13:16certainly not a fixed
- 13:17concept there are many factors that can
- 13:21and do shape your personality over time
- 13:23so the person you are today might not be
- 13:25who you are in 20 years
- 13:27you will just have to wait and see so
