These glasses might make Apple's $3500 Vision Pro look pointless — Transcript

- 0:00I've always got a kick out of doing
- 0:02dumb-ass portable workstation setups
- 0:04like using a Mac mini with a Vision Pro
- 0:07out in public or using the XREAL and Dex
- 0:09mode for a week at cafes. All of these
- 0:12were fun, but they actually sucked balls
- 0:15in reality. My wife couldn't stand it.
- 0:18>> You're getting more reviews.
- 0:20>> XREAL and Google are claiming to have
- 0:22created the Vision Pro experience with
- 0:25just these glasses that weigh like 95 g.
- 0:28This video isn't sponsored by anyone, by
- 0:30the way, so I can get you guys an honest
- 0:32look at this thing. In this video, I'll
- 0:34test how good the head and hand tracking
- 0:36is, how clear the text is for the coders
- 0:39and graphic designers, and compare it to
- 0:41the previous XREAL products. I'll also
- 0:43test how comfortable it is, too. Okay,
- 0:45humans, I flew 7,500
- 0:47mi to see this XREAL Aura in person, and
- 0:50my wife knows how excited I am for this
- 0:53product. Let's go and see what my wife
- 0:54thinks of my fashion.
- 0:56>> You don't look normal.
- 0:57>> They look perfect.
- 1:00>> So, I'm going to go up and see it in 30
- 1:01minutes. Let's go together.
- 1:02>> All right, let's try this on.
- 1:04>> You can go ahead, and I'll start by
- 1:05putting you into an input onboarding
- 1:07tutorial. Flash through, and then you'll
- 1:09hear somebody narrate.
- 1:10>> So, obviously, this is just complete
- 1:11posture. Ooh.
- 1:12>> So, let's learn how to get around.
- 1:14>> see this uh welcome screen.
- 1:16And so, the first stage is going to
- 1:17introduce you to the gestures.
- 1:19>> Then quickly pinch and release each
- 1:21object.
- 1:22>> Wait, what?
- 1:24Oh.
- 1:26Friggin' hell, look at this.
- 1:30So, what this is
- 1:31This is stuck to
- 1:33>> It's world locked, yeah.
- 1:34>> Guys, this is crazy.
- 1:35>> So, once you do get your Galaxy XR, this
- 1:38is uh
- 1:38>> Once I do?
- 1:39>> the exact same uh information
- 1:40>> Oh, wow. Oh, yeah, sorry. Sorry, I might
- 1:43as well click this on.
- 1:44>> So, right now he's actually sequence
- 1:45breaking the tutorial.
- 1:46>> During my 1-hour demo, I got to interact
- 1:49with Android XR for the first time, and
- 1:51it felt incredibly intuitive and
- 1:54familiar.
- 1:54>> Drawing in the freaking toilets.
- 1:56>> Like you rotate your wrist and pinch to
- 1:58open the home screen, point at the app
- 2:00and pinch to open, point at the edge,
- 2:03pinch and hold to drive windows around.
- 2:05>> So it doesn't want to bother you.
- 2:06>> Oh, this is crazy.
- 2:07>> Use your other hand to open tools in
- 2:09apps or extra menus for games. Also, if
- 2:13you turn on the dimming and you turn to
- 2:14look at a human head, the dimming turns
- 2:17off automatically. Which was pretty
- 2:19cool. The head tracking was surprisingly
- 2:21good. So I tried to break the tracking.
- 2:24>> It shouldn't be this good.
- 2:26What if I just
- 2:28Far out.
- 2:30>> Yeah.
- 2:31>> What if I just
- 2:32Whoa! Bro, this is like Vision Pro
- 2:34level. The most impressive to me was the
- 2:37eye comfort compared to the previous
- 2:39Xreal glasses. So I compared them on the
- 2:41spot. These are the Xreal ones I've been
- 2:43using for the past year, yeah? And I
- 2:45assumed this would be heavier, right?
- 2:47Cuz you're doing Vision Pro level stuff
- 2:49on glasses, so I assumed they'd be
- 2:50heavier, but it's not. They feel the
- 2:51same. Now, how's the clarity? The
- 2:54clarity feels similar. I think the
- 2:56resolution is kind of the same, but the
- 2:58aspect ratio is different. Vertically
- 2:59it's probably higher. Let me just plug
- 3:01this into my phone, and I just want to
- 3:03do like a side-by-side comparison.
- 3:07Oh, bro. Immediately I can see so much
- 3:09with I can see my pants.
- 3:11I'm not even joking. Yeah, okay, the
- 3:12field of view sucks.
- 3:14And it's so reflective it's not even
- 3:16funny.
- 3:19No. Okay. Okay, there's a huge Okay, in
- 3:21terms of hardware there's a huge
- 3:22difference. This is super reflective.
- 3:25And it does annoy you, especially when
- 3:27you're using it not in a pitch-black
- 3:28room. Whereas this thing, I feel fine.
- 3:31There's barely any reflections. It feels
- 3:33much more comfortable to use longer
- 3:35periods. Uh that's a bigger deal than I
- 3:36thought. You got two cameras that's
- 3:38doing all the tracking, and then you got
- 3:40an actual RGB camera, so that Gemini
- 3:43knows what you're looking at, and you
- 3:44can ask it questions, and apps can plug
- 3:46into it straight away, and you can do
- 3:48things with that as well. Oh, and for
- 3:49the dads who want to know if it works on
- 3:52kids, I tested it on both my fat babies.
- 3:55I can confirm you will get absolute
- 3:57instant silence with this tool. Does it
- 4:00sound like we don't have kids at our
- 4:02house?
- 4:03Because you know what? We do.
- 4:07These glasses on them
- 4:09and they just not saying a word.
- 4:12Am I the best dad?
- 4:15Am I the best daddy?
- 4:19They don't even reply. I wanted to talk
- 4:20about the
- 4:21the finger tracking thing. How how good
- 4:23was it compared to Vision Pro? Now,
- 4:26the Vision Pro does feel a little bit
- 4:29more
- 4:30sensitive and a little bit more accurate
- 4:32because there are six cameras on your
- 4:33face. However, the Xreal Air was wasn't
- 4:37far behind. It didn't like the head
- 4:39tracking felt legit. Like it actually
- 4:42felt like the Vision Pro in terms of
- 4:44like
- 4:45things being in place, right? But the
- 4:47hand tracking, I feel like 1 hour wasn't
- 4:50enough time, but it didn't feel
- 4:52comfortable to like move things around.
- 4:54Like I wasn't like bang bang bang bang
- 4:56like
- 4:58Like I wanted to do that like Iron Man.
- 4:59But when it comes to like recognizing
- 5:01your hand when you turn your hand, it
- 5:02always worked um 10 times out of 10. It
- 5:05is a very impressive piece of tech
- 5:07because they were able to kind of mimic
- 5:09like 90% of the Vision Pro with just two
- 5:12cameras up here, which is insane. All in
- 5:15all, I think this is exciting. I cannot
- 5:17wait till Apple makes their version.
- 5:20Snapchat actually made augmented reality
- 5:22glasses and the features look insane.
- 5:25But dude, you look like an absolute nut
- 5:28job wearing that thing.
- 5:30I sent a photo of it on my face to my
- 5:33wife and she said, "You will still be
- 5:34single." Whilst I was in LA, I posted up
- 5:37what you guys wanted to know about the
- 5:39Xreal Airs. And instead of answering
- 5:41them myself, I had the privilege of
- 5:43chatting with Ralph, who is basically
- 5:45the face of Xreal in America. Dude,
- 5:47thanks for doing this for me.
- 5:48>> Happy to do it. Thanks for checking us
- 5:50out.
- 5:50>> Now, first question I have, why are we
- 5:52using a puck instead of our phone?
- 5:55>> Yeah, it's a great question and it it's
- 5:57a pretty simple answer. It's because the
- 5:59puck is a full-on AI spatial computer
- 6:03and your phone's not.
- 6:03>> Now, I've been a user of the previous
- 6:06XREAL stuff since the Air 2 Pro and the
- 6:09immediate thing I noticed when I chucked
- 6:11these on is the field of view is
- 6:14massive. Can you explain how you guys
- 6:16did that?
- 6:17>> Yeah, and you nailed two of the
- 6:18important things. So, the field of view
- 6:20went up while physically the lenses got
- 6:22smaller. And then we were able to shrink
- 6:24that down by 15% but make the screen
- 6:29more than 44% larger. So, we went from a
- 6:31triangular bird bath to a flat prism
- 6:33lens and this is smaller but bigger,
- 6:36right? It's much smaller physically but
- 6:38it gives you a 70° field of view. So,
- 6:40you go from 46° to 70°. It is a massive
- 6:44field of view.
- 6:45>> Has there been a resolution increase and
- 6:47why aren't we seeing
- 6:49at least 1440p?
- 6:50>> This is 1200p, you're right. We know how
- 6:52to go higher than that in the future but
- 6:54one of the things also is it's
- 6:55expensive. We're not ready to sell a
- 6:57$4,000 device. We could but that's not
- 6:59accessible to anybody.
- 7:01>> How much is it going to be?
- 7:02>> I see what you're doing.
- 7:05It will be below $1,500.
- 7:07>> Does it work in a plane, in a car, in a
- 7:08train? That was one of the questions
- 7:10that they asked.
- 7:10>> Yes.
- 7:11All of them. Yeah, it's really cool.
- 7:13There's a travel mode that automatically
- 7:15kicks in if it notices drift.
- 7:17>> What has been the most useful realistic
- 7:19use case
- 7:20>> Yeah.
- 7:21>> for you?
- 7:22>> I work in my XREAL glasses honestly 4-5
- 7:24hours a day. Like I'm a power user. I
- 7:26took my monitors off my desk in my
- 7:28office. Like I will work 4-5 hours a day
- 7:31in mine.
- 7:31>> Yeah.
- 7:32When can I take this and can I be the
- 7:33first one to use it?
- 7:35>> It's coming soon. It will launch this
- 7:36fall.
- 7:38We'll make sure you get it a little
- 7:39earlier than the average customer.
- 7:42>> Now, someone asked it looks when you're
- 7:44just walking around. From the front, it
- 7:46kind of looks like normal Ray-Bans, but
- 7:49from the side, you do look like a
- 7:51douchebag, and the glasses sit a little
- 7:53further away from your face. But,
- 7:57why the hell do you care if you got
- 7:59spatial computing at your fingertips and
- 8:01a 300-in monitor to play Forza Horizon
- 8:04on the plane? Another great question
- 8:06was, "What the hell is this even for?" I
- 8:09reckon this will be an awesome
- 8:10entertainment device when you're
- 8:12chilling at home, like watch YouTube,
- 8:14connect your Switch or your Steam Deck
- 8:16to it, and then a productivity device
- 8:18when you're on the go or traveling. By
- 8:20the way, after using the XREAL Air for
- 8:22an hour, one thing is very clear, these
- 8:25were not made for you to walk around and
- 8:28just live life, go shopping, and you
- 8:31want to be sitting down, either at a
- 8:32desk, at a cafe, on your couch, at the
- 8:35beach, or whatever. In the plane, it's
- 8:37not a fashionable thing, like you got
- 8:38this cable hanging out the side, you've
- 8:40got this puck you've got to attach to
- 8:42your pants. I would personally do it.
- 8:44I'll probably live with it for like 3
- 8:46weeks straight. Like, uh during the
- 8:49demo, they did show off some impressive
- 8:51games, but I just can't imagine calling
- 8:54the boys over and everyone wearing these
- 8:57playing a board game like a bunch of
- 8:59idiots. Like, I just don't see the
- 9:01actual use case of that. Do you know
- 9:03what I mean? Actually, that's probably
- 9:05exactly what I'll do when I get my
- 9:06review unit. It seemed like everything
- 9:08that they were showing off to me was
- 9:10like a showcase for the technology, but
- 9:12it's not like we haven't seen the
- 9:13technology before. We have seen them. It
- 9:16is the first time seeing this technology
- 9:18in like
- 9:20glasses.
- 9:22You do look ridiculous from the side,
- 9:23but it's still glasses, and the fact
- 9:25that you can do the same things that you
- 9:27could do on like the Vision Pro is
- 9:29pretty cool. Like, Google Maps was
- 9:32pretty cool, like being able to look
- 9:33through Google Maps and like really get
- 9:35into the street view and have like, you
- 9:37know look around and stuff like that.
- 9:38Painting was pretty cool, but I don't
- 9:40know man. These all just kind of felt a
- 9:42bit like a gimmick. Like I'd rather just
- 9:44use Google Maps on my phone or on my
- 9:46laptop to be honest. For me, I'm
- 9:49genuinely excited to replace my laptop
- 9:53monitor when I'm on the go. So yeah, so
- 9:55whilst I'm working, whilst I'm gaming,
- 9:57whilst I'm doing anything, you can
- 9:58always have other apps open on the side,
- 10:02which was the beautiful thing about
- 10:04Vision Pro. But the fact that it's this
- 10:06light, that puck. Here's my first
- 10:09impressions of the puck when I first
- 10:11looked at it. Oh, and this puck thing.
- 10:13This is a thick boy. Like I I I was
- 10:16wondering why you couldn't just use your
- 10:17phone. Some people might complain about
- 10:19this, but I love that XREAL doesn't have
- 10:22all the batteries in here. That way it
- 10:23keeps it light. Like can you imagine?
- 10:27But this is what a normal headset feels
- 10:29like.
- 10:30Okay, I'm here with my baby joy.
- 10:32>> Hello.
- 10:33>> I totally forgot to say that the puck
- 10:35actually has function outside of just
- 10:38being a computer. It is actually a touch
- 10:40screen. So you could imagine if it's
- 10:42like pitch black, obviously the hand
- 10:44tracking might not work. So you can
- 10:45actually use that as a pointer device.
- 10:48>> Back to the video.
- 10:50>> Battery life.
- 10:51And this is not getting hot at all.
- 10:53>> In terms of battery life, 4 hours until
- 10:56we get to like 30%.
- 10:57>> I don't think anyone's going to sit here
- 10:58for 4 hours, but 4 hours is good. Now,
- 11:01what is my prediction for the XREAL Air?
- 11:05Like is this going to actually take off?
- 11:07Um is it actually going to start a new
- 11:09industry, you know? I asked Ralph a
- 11:12question about the resolution. Like why
- 11:14are you sticking with 1080p? And the
- 11:15reason was it costs more. I wish they
- 11:18had a pro version for those people who
- 11:20are willing to pay more to get the
- 11:23higher resolution. One of the biggest
- 11:24things for me when you're editing video,
- 11:27especially when you're like writing
- 11:28scripts and working with text, you want
- 11:30it to be sharp. I can get by with video
- 11:33editing cuz I don't really need to like
- 11:34look at the pixels and stuff like that.
- 11:36To be honest, if they want to go beyond
- 11:39the early adopters, the tech heads,
- 11:41people like me, um they need that killer
- 11:43app. I still have not seen an app where
- 11:45I'm like, "Damn, this is the thing."
- 11:47>> So, my wife says I looked like a puff.
- 11:49Look what she's doing right now.
- 11:53>> Hm?
- 11:54>> What are you doing?
- 11:55>> Don't talk to me.
- 11:58>> Right now, I've got the script on the
- 12:00left side, right? And this is augmented
- 12:03reality, so I can see straight through
- 12:04it. That's why I'm able to just
- 12:06just walk, right? But um I've got the
- 12:09script on the left side,
- 12:11and I'm walking around with the video
- 12:14feed of this camera on the right side.
- 12:17We're living in good times. Our family
- 12:20uh saves up once a year, and we go out
- 12:22to film a free documentary for
- 12:25charities, missionaries, and NGOs who
- 12:27just can't afford video, so we can help
- 12:29them raise funds and awareness. Now,
- 12:32we've been to Bangladesh to help keep
- 12:33the schools open in the slums. We've
- 12:35been to Mongolia, and last year we went
- 12:37to Uganda. And I met this local over
- 12:40there who is literally funding an
- 12:42orphanage of over 600 kids with his
- 12:45farm. And I I literally went there and
- 12:48shot these shots, by the way. I got a
- 12:49message from him on WhatsApp the other
- 12:51day saying that the kids have doubled in
- 12:53numbers, and he can't keep up
- 12:55financially. So, we need your help. Now,
- 12:58I'll leave the GoFundMe in the
- 12:59description. 100% of it goes to the
- 13:02kids, and I'm not stopping until we
- 13:04finished building the schools over
- 13:06there. Thank you so much for partnering
- 13:07with us. I love you all.
