  10. 0:19the billion dollar Bay because I took my
  11. 0:22business from an idea to getting an
  12. 0:24evaluation from the largest private
  13. 0:26Equity Fund in the world uh at a 10
  14. 0:30million dollar valuation we've since
  15. 0:32grown that to a billion dollar valuation
  16. 0:36and I'm going to tell you how I did that
  17. 0:38I teach the entrepreneurs road map it's
  18. 0:40a proprietary framework so if you're not
  19. 0:43in my group if you're not watching me on
  20. 0:44YouTube if you're not getting any
  21. 0:46information from me and you're trying to
  22. 0:48build a business you need to come on
  23. 0:49over to the dollhouse okay so they also
  24. 0:51call me the pitch Queen because just
  25. 0:53standing on stages some of you guys
  26. 0:55might be trying to get ready for pitch
  27. 0:56competitions and doing all that just
  28. 0:58with my mind raised hundreds of
  29. 1:00thousands of dollars okay just on the
  30. 1:02side in addition to the Venture Capital
  31. 1:04that I've raised for my company and
  32. 1:05we're now out here getting contracts we
  33. 1:07just signed a 20 million doll deal last
  34. 1:09week and we are winning in these
  35. 1:11entrepreneurial streets so if you want
  36. 1:13to win that's why they call me the
  37. 1:14people's coach because I also have this
  38. 1:16gift where I'm really able to teach it's
  39. 1:18not just what I do but I'm actually able
  40. 1:20to teach it to folks and I see them
  41. 1:22getting results as well so that's what
  42. 1:24we do over here in the dollhouse so
  43. 1:25welcome if you don't know me you know me
  44. 1:27now okay my company's called aqua
  45. 1:29genuity you can Google it they call me
  46. 1:30the queen of water okay I've invented a
  47. 1:33technology that makes it as easy to
  48. 1:35check a weather forecast as it is to
  49. 1:37check water quality we've gotten awards
  50. 1:38from Google Apple Amazon money from
  51. 1:41Google Amazon we I gave a TED Talk at
  52. 1:45went virro been featured by Forbes wre
  53. 1:48New York Times the US News and World
  54. 1:50Report Reuters child I'm a whole thing
  55. 1:52like I'm world famous in my space I'm
  56. 1:54I'm internationally recognized speaker
  57. 1:56on issues of water Wellness
  58. 1:58sustainability environmental justice and
  59. 2:00climate change and um I've done this all
  60. 2:02over the world I teach the framework I'm
  61. 2:04about to teach you the fstar pitch the
  62. 2:06proprietary festar pitch I've taught it
  63. 2:08at Morehouse I've taught it at Harvard
  64. 2:10University where I am entrepreneur and
  65. 2:12residence expert in residence for
  66. 2:13Harvard Innovation labs and you know I
  67. 2:16do this all over the world so I'm happy
  68. 2:17to be bringing it to you I'm
  69. 2:20specifically giving this information out
  70. 2:22to Black entrepreneurs black Founders I
  71. 2:26got to take you on this journey we don't
  72. 2:27want to stay just an entrepreneur okay
  73. 2:29might be in an entrepreneurship program
  74. 2:31you might have just started your
  75. 2:32business an entrepreneur is someone who
  76. 2:33takes a risk who steps out and says oh
  77. 2:35I'm going to start my business this is
  78. 2:36what I want to do okay that's so
  79. 2:38wonderful I love that right but if you
  80. 2:40take if you stand on top of this
  81. 2:41building where I'm sitting right now I'm
  82. 2:43on the 31st floor and you say I'm taking
  83. 2:46a risk here I go and you step out you're
  84. 2:49going to fall cuz gravity right so
  85. 2:51taking a risk is not enough you've got
  86. 2:52to move on up so there five levels of of
  87. 2:54Entrepreneurship I got to get you from
  88. 2:56level one which is entrepreneurship
  89. 2:57level two is just an auditor that's
  90. 2:59people people who are out here just
  91. 3:01running around going to events going to
  92. 3:03Fireside Chats just listing the
  93. 3:04information on Instagram or whatever
  94. 3:07right and taking notes and reading
  95. 3:08little business books and all that kind
  96. 3:09of stuff that's so cute but that's like
  97. 3:11auditing a class like if you go to a
  98. 3:13college professor and you say hey can I
  99. 3:15just audit your class for you know not
  100. 3:17for credit I just want to sit in the
  101. 3:18class sure here's a syllabus you can
  102. 3:20read all the books do all the stuff
  103. 3:21you're not getting any credit for that
  104. 3:23in the marketpl okay so you're not
  105. 3:24actually building your business right I
  106. 3:26got to get you at least to level three
  107. 3:28that's a Founder that's someone who's
  108. 3:30committed to the work of establishing
  109. 3:31systems in your business like this is
  110. 3:34how we do what we do this is how we talk
  111. 3:37about our business this is how we get a
  112. 3:38customer if you can't establish systems
  113. 3:41for how to do that on repeat where it's
  114. 3:43predictable um and scalable you don't
  115. 3:47really have a business baby just just
  116. 3:48stop playing stop playing so I got to
  117. 3:50get you at least a level three level
  118. 3:51four is a builder now I'm going to
  119. 3:53actually get in here and do the work see
  120. 3:55we watch too much TV y'all watch too
  121. 3:56much Shark Tank or whatever like I don't
  122. 3:58know what y'all be watching some of that
  123. 4:00stuff is really good but many times I
  124. 4:02see people say oh you're supposed to
  125. 4:03work on your business not in your
  126. 4:04business I'm like no no no no no that's
  127. 4:06after you get past step five on the road
  128. 4:08map okay you've got to be in this work
  129. 4:11at the beginning you got to deal with
  130. 4:13customers you got to get the feedback
  131. 4:14you got to listen to the language that
  132. 4:16people use their problem language right
  133. 4:18and that should be reflected in your
  134. 4:19marketing y'all some of y'all are too
  135. 4:21brilliant too smart for your own good
  136. 4:22right don't be the broke and the
  137. 4:24brilliant don't don't do that don't be
  138. 4:26on that show okay I don't want you just
  139. 4:28out here you so br I invented this thing
  140. 4:30and this technology and you're telling
  141. 4:32all this technical language and don't
  142. 4:34nobody know what you're talking about if
  143. 4:36you're not exchanging any energy when
  144. 4:37you speak you're not going to make any
  145. 4:39money okay and then level five is where
  146. 4:41we all want to be we say we want to be a
  147. 4:43CEO but listen a CEO is someone who
  148. 4:46oversees sales that means you're making
  149. 4:49money in your business systems that
  150. 4:51means you documented how you make money
  151. 4:53how do you get a customer how do we talk
  152. 4:55to people about this work into systems
  153. 4:57that are repeatable you can document
  154. 4:59that and then you got a stab like you
  155. 5:01can actually hand that off so somebody
  156. 5:03else can help you do this work and reach
  157. 5:05more people so you go from one to one to
  158. 5:08one to many to many to many now you can
  159. 5:11sit back let your business run and grow
  160. 5:13now you've turned your idea into an
  161. 5:14asset that has value in the marketplace
  162. 5:17now your brand means something now you
  163. 5:18can go do these brand Partnerships and
  164. 5:20all this stuff that you want to do
  165. 5:21that's step seven on the road map most
  166. 5:24of us fail at business 97% of black
  167. 5:26businesses will never grow to the point
  168. 5:28where they can hire outside employees
  169. 5:31why is that because they skip steps on
  170. 5:33the road map so I'm giving you the
  171. 5:35secret sauce okay this is what they
  172. 5:37don't teach you in those other programs
  173. 5:39this is what you you probably never
  174. 5:40heard this before and I love it I love
  175. 5:42it so welcome to the Dollhouse come on
  176. 5:43in I'm going to give you the secret
  177. 5:44sauce okay how you talk about your work
  178. 5:46is the first system that you build in
  179. 5:48your business you can't just be out here
  180. 5:50just hey I got business buy from buy
  181. 5:52from me hey I started a business buy
  182. 5:54something from me nobody cares all right
  183. 5:57no one cares so that's why I teach the
  184. 5:59five star pitch it is a framework that
  185. 6:02is without fail we raised over $2
  186. 6:05million most of it during the pandemic
  187. 6:08from a hammock okay people were giving
  188. 6:10me millions of dollars because of this
  189. 6:13framework the five star pitch so I'm
  190. 6:15going to break it down for you right now
  191. 6:16and we start with why we always start
  192. 6:19with why so there are two TED Talks that
  193. 6:21you should watch one is mine it's called
  194. 6:23what's in your water and the other is
  195. 6:25from Simon sck it's called start with
  196. 6:28why it's also a great book okay so we
  197. 6:30always start with why people don't care
  198. 6:32what you do they don't care how you do
  199. 6:33it until they understand why why you do
  200. 6:36what you do and why should I care right
  201. 6:38so we usually start with a story and or
  202. 6:41a statistic okay you want to be able to
  203. 6:44put people in the context of the type of
  204. 6:46problem that you're solving okay so
  205. 6:49always give me some kind of entry point
  206. 6:51something that I've heard of so for
  207. 6:53example when I would pitch and talk
  208. 6:54about aqu genuity I always started with
  209. 6:56Flint how many people remember what
  210. 6:58happened in Flint Michigan because most
  211. 7:01people do so I'm starting where people
  212. 7:03are we meet people where they are on
  213. 7:05this journey right we're trying to
  214. 7:06exchange energy and get them to follow
  215. 7:08us on a journey from the problem state
  216. 7:10that they're in to the solution that
  217. 7:12you've created in your business okay so
  218. 7:14you start with something that they can
  219. 7:16relate to a story or a statistic I say
  220. 7:19how many of you have heard about Flint
  221. 7:21Michigan every most people remember that
  222. 7:23when I talk to International audiences I
  223. 7:25have to use a different example okay so
  224. 7:26it depends on the person and the people
  225. 7:28you're talking to right but I say most
  226. 7:30of us have heard about what happened in
  227. 7:32Flint Michigan you know 100,000
  228. 7:33residents in their families are poisoned
  229. 7:35by the water coming out of their Taps
  230. 7:37that's crazy but most people don't know
  231. 7:39there actually 3,810 locations in the
  232. 7:43United States with more lead in their
  233. 7:45water then flp Michigan and people
  234. 7:48go bam we got them first job is to
  235. 7:52connect with people emotionally we are
  236. 7:54humans every purchasing decision is
  237. 7:57actually an emotional decision so you
  238. 7:58always start with why you start with the
  239. 8:00story you start with the human
  240. 8:01connection that's also your elevator
  241. 8:04pitch you should be able to do that in
  242. 8:05about 30 seconds and you say you know
  243. 8:084,000 places in the United States you
  244. 8:11know got lead in their water and all of
  245. 8:13that but that's just one of thousands of
  246. 8:15things in our water so if I was just
  247. 8:17giving an elevator pitch I would I would
  248. 8:19finish it out by saying so that's why I
  249. 8:21created my company is aqua genuity and
  250. 8:23we've invented a technology that tells
  251. 8:25you what's in your water the same way
  252. 8:27you check a weather forecast you could
  253. 8:28check water quality so that consumers
  254. 8:31corporations and cities can understand
  255. 8:34what's in your water without having to
  256. 8:35have a degree in environmental
  257. 8:38engineering right or or chemistry right
  258. 8:41that's what I invented and that's an
  259. 8:43elevator pitch that gets somebody
  260. 8:45intrigued to want to know more okay so
  261. 8:47you always start with why so the second
  262. 8:50step of a successful five-star pitch you
  263. 8:52want to really explain your founder
  264. 8:54story right so the way we do that is a
  265. 8:56simple framework known as isdr
  266. 9:00I stands for identity who are you again
  267. 9:02you want to level set you want to make a
  268. 9:04human connection so I'm born and raised
  269. 9:06in Atlanta grew up here went to
  270. 9:08Frederick Douglas High School left here
  271. 9:09and went to Harvard I'm a Serial
  272. 9:11entrepreneur and I was working with my
  273. 9:12mentor he's now 86 years old he's the
  274. 9:14first African americ to have his own
  275. 9:16bottle water plant in the United States
  276. 9:18and he invented a water filter he got
  277. 9:20awards from Congressional Black Caucus
  278. 9:22and John Lewis for this invention we're
  279. 9:24talking to big companies they say we
  280. 9:26love this technology but we don't need
  281. 9:28it because our water fine and so what I
  282. 9:31realized the struggle or the problem you
  283. 9:35see how I'm telling a story and I'm
  284. 9:36giving you the struggle the problem
  285. 9:38right I'm contextualizing the problem in
  286. 9:41a human experience I'm giving youall the
  287. 9:43secret sauce now you can do what you
  288. 9:45want you can got a pitch like this you
  289. 9:46could take it or leave it you could use
  290. 9:47it or lose it but what you can't do is
  291. 9:49say you never heard it because you're
  292. 9:50hearing it from me right now okay I'm
  293. 9:51breaking it down for you so I anchored
  294. 9:53the problem in a human experience that
  295. 9:55people can relate to as visceral right
  296. 9:58and so I realized the problem is people
  297. 10:01didn't know what was in their water and
  298. 10:03about 8 months later Flint happens right
  299. 10:06so everybody's now really concerned
  300. 10:07about water quality humans are basically
  301. 10:09the sensors that are alerting us to
  302. 10:11water quality problems in these cities
  303. 10:13and communities around the country it's
  304. 10:15not a third world issue happening right
  305. 10:17here in the United States but we don't
  306. 10:18know what's in our water until there's a
  307. 10:20crisis right how many more people have
  308. 10:22to be poisoned how many more cities have
  309. 10:24to suffer you know billions of dollars
  310. 10:26in Lost Economic Development just
  311. 10:28because we don't know what's in our our
  312. 10:29water so I decided to do something about
  313. 10:31it and I invented a technology I wrote
  314. 10:34an algorithm called the aquacore and it
  315. 10:36takes any existing data from the EPA
  316. 10:39Public Utilities puts it all into a
  317. 10:41number so 100 is good zero is bad blue
  318. 10:44is good red is bad like things that
  319. 10:46anybody can understand without having to
  320. 10:48be an expert and then the results what
  321. 10:51came out of that is oah called NASA
  322. 10:55called you know the United Nations
  323. 10:56called Google called put me on the
  324. 10:58homeage P of Google it became a thing we
  325. 11:01are the first in the world to do this
  326. 11:04and that's why I started my company Aqua
  327. 11:06genuity so we built an application and a
  328. 11:09platform so for consumers here's how it
  329. 11:11works tells you what's in your you put
  330. 11:13in your ZIP code it tells you what's in
  331. 11:15your water what does it mean for my
  332. 11:17health what kind of filter do I need and
  333. 11:18it gives you regular updated alerts if
  334. 11:21there's a sudden change in your water
  335. 11:23quality so you can protect your health
  336. 11:25and your family's health it works for
  337. 11:27corporations so they can have a business
  338. 11:30intelligence tool to have a better
  339. 11:32understanding of what's going on with
  340. 11:33water because water affects every single
  341. 11:35industry and we do it for governments as
  342. 11:37well so that they can protect uh the
  343. 11:40standard of living and the quality of
  344. 11:42life for their citizens in their region
  345. 11:44so that was step three step
  346. 11:48three is you want to tell me in a very
  347. 11:51succinct way how your product or your
  348. 11:55platform works very clear very simple
  349. 11:58one 2 three we don't want to get into
  350. 12:00technical language we don't want to get
  351. 12:02into all of the weeds we don't want to
  352. 12:04confuse our audience we want a clear
  353. 12:06story that we're telling and the key to
  354. 12:09connect from part one from step two
  355. 12:11excuse me to step three the key to
  356. 12:14connecting step two to step three is a
  357. 12:16phrase that I always use you've told
  358. 12:18your founder story I this is my identity
  359. 12:22this was the struggle of the story what
  360. 12:23I saw what I experienced the problem to
  361. 12:26be so I discovered I decided you know
  362. 12:28you Ved whatever that is right the
  363. 12:31technology the platform as a result of
  364. 12:34doing that work the the early work that
  365. 12:36you did in that space you know you saw
  366. 12:38positive results here's the phrase and
  367. 12:41that's why we founded the company and
  368. 12:44then entered the name of your company
  369. 12:46right and then you go on to tell me and
  370. 12:48this is how it works one two three okay
  371. 12:52now step four in a five star pitch you
  372. 12:55really want to talk about your traction
  373. 12:56and Milestones right we've been doing
  374. 12:58this work uh and that's where you talk
  375. 13:02about the Googles of the world and
  376. 13:03featured by Forbes and Wire magazine and
  377. 13:05New York Times called us you know ocean
  378. 13:07Visions named us one of seven
  379. 13:09Technologies s saving the world's
  380. 13:11waterways and ocean Visions is a
  381. 13:13collaboration between Georgia Aquarium
  382. 13:15here in Atlanta as well as MIT Stanford
  383. 13:18Smithsonian and the United Nations okay
  384. 13:21we have been featured uh by Smart City
  385. 13:24World Congress in Barcelona where I was
  386. 13:26a a keynote speaker we've been requested
  387. 13:28now in 22 countries to bring this
  388. 13:30technology because people don't know
  389. 13:34what's in their water until it's too
  390. 13:36late and so step five in a five star
  391. 13:40pitch you want to talk about your team
  392. 13:42this is where you talk about who's on
  393. 13:43your team how do we know that you are
  394. 13:45the ones to lead us in solving this
  395. 13:48problem that you're solving right so you
  396. 13:50talk about your team your credentials my
  397. 13:52team you know we we've we've built
  398. 13:55platforms for companies like Google and
  399. 13:57Oracle in the past um we've run billion
  400. 14:00dollar organizations and scale
  401. 14:01Technologies from inception uh three of
  402. 14:05my advisers two of them have patents
  403. 14:06have worked with Jeff Bezos have patents
  404. 14:08on the Alexa uh my other advisor is
  405. 14:12former United Nations Ambassador so we
  406. 14:15have not only the team and the skill set
  407. 14:18but also the bandwidth and the reach to
  408. 14:23to do this work and solve this problem
  409. 14:25at a global scale so when you answer all
  410. 14:28those questions and you check call those
  411. 14:29boxes one 2 3 4 5 now you get to make an
  412. 14:35ask you want to ask them for something
  413. 14:37whatever it is in this case if you're
  414. 14:39doing a pitch competition let's say it's
  415. 14:41$10,000 always tell them what you're
  416. 14:43going to do with the money okay if
  417. 14:45you're asking for uh one of your mentors
  418. 14:47to give you um you know introduce you to
  419. 14:50someone right you tell them if you you
  420. 14:53know connect me with your your uh Mentor
  421. 14:55is someone that we've had you know on
  422. 14:57our radar for a long time she's she's
  423. 15:00been well known in the water space for
  424. 15:02decades and with her support we'll be
  425. 15:05able to do our launch our first pilot
  426. 15:08and we expect to see a 20% increase uh
  427. 15:11Improvement in water quality just from
  428. 15:13that one pilot in a major city like
  429. 15:15Atlanta and that's going to lay the
  430. 15:18groundwork for the future of our company
  431. 15:20you know whatever it is that your ask is
  432. 15:23whether it's in a pitch competition or
  433. 15:25just in a regular conversation you have
  434. 15:28earned permission to ask for that when
  435. 15:31you complete the five star pitch it's
  436. 15:32like going around the bases in Baseball
  437. 15:35okay so now we're here now we can ask
  438. 15:38for something and expect you know a fair
  439. 15:40exchange not only that but you've
  440. 15:42checked all the boxes so remember I said
  441. 15:44we have to make a human connection at
  442. 15:45the beginning that's emotion when you
  443. 15:48get over to step three you're really
  444. 15:50checking the box of logic you want
  445. 15:52people to understand yes I know how to
  446. 15:54solve this problem and then the third
  447. 15:57box you have to check is credibility so
  448. 15:59that's why we talk about the Milestones
  449. 16:01who we've already worked with the
  450. 16:02traction we've already gotten the next
  451. 16:04couple of Milestones that are coming up
  452. 16:06for us and we talk about our team we do
  453. 16:08this for real is basically you have to
  454. 16:10check those three boxes emotion logic
  455. 16:12credibility and when you get to the end
  456. 16:15you've got to stick the landing it's
  457. 16:17like gymnastics right you got to stick
  458. 16:19the landing so what we're asking for is
  459. 16:21whatever the amount of money you're
  460. 16:22asking for if it's for investors or
  461. 16:24whatever you're looking for if a pitch
  462. 16:26competition right but then you want to
  463. 16:28say and this work matters now more than
  464. 16:31ever what I always close with I Elevate
  465. 16:33the ending of the
  466. 16:35speech it's a speech okay I elevate it I
  467. 16:39say you know this work matters now more
  468. 16:40than ever because by 2030 according to
  469. 16:43the United Nations there'll be a 40%
  470. 16:45greater demand for clean water than
  471. 16:47there is Supply on this planet for the
  472. 16:49first time in human history so help us
  473. 16:51to bring clean water solutions to
  474. 16:54communities around the world so that
  475. 16:56instead of kids IQ scores being lowered
  476. 16:58because of the lead they've been exposed
  477. 17:00to we can turn them into leaders in in
  478. 17:02the Next Generation right they become
  479. 17:04the Guardians of H2O because our
  480. 17:06platform you know engages community and
  481. 17:08and kids and all that right but however
  482. 17:10you can stick The Landing take me back
  483. 17:13to the why take me back to why any of
  484. 17:15this matters you know what I mean and I
  485. 17:18I say this is how we change the world
  486. 17:20it's whatever however you close close
  487. 17:22your pitch out they need to be convinced
  488. 17:25that you are the team to solve this
  489. 17:28problem
  490. 17:30like I believe they can solve this
  491. 17:33problem that's the job okay that's the
  492. 17:35reason for doing a pitch they need to
  493. 17:37feel when you finish talking they need
  494. 17:39to feel like oh yeah they can solve this
  495. 17:40problem oh it's happening they need to
  496. 17:41feel like you're already in motion you
  497. 17:44know we just want you to put this money
  498. 17:45in here but we're it's already in motion
  499. 17:47do you know what I'm saying so in the
  500. 17:50pitch don't be like thank you if you
  501. 17:51have any questions give me a call I mean
  502. 17:52we know that and you put your you
  503. 17:53already put your name on the slide I
  504. 17:55mean say something that that matters
  505. 17:57right again give me a reason is going to
  506. 17:59be sitting in this room listening to you
  507. 18:00talking right a successful pitch must
  508. 18:04be memorable connect with people
  509. 18:08emotionally and make them want to take
  510. 18:10action so if you put all that together
  511. 18:13you know what we call
  512. 18:14that portable your pitch must be
  513. 18:18portable they need to understand what it
  514. 18:19is that you do why it matters that you
  515. 18:22do
  516. 18:23it and what's next for you if they can't
  517. 18:27go back and repeat that to somebody
  518. 18:29after they hear you speak your pitch was
  519. 18:32ineffective okay it must be portable and
  520. 18:36that's one of the five characteristics
  521. 18:38of money that you want to make sure that
  522. 18:40your business and your pitch is matching
  523. 18:44five characteristics of money so if you
