The Womier DUO 87 Keyboard SOLVES a Real Problem! — Transcript

- 0:01This mechanical keyboard looks pretty
- 0:04unassuming, right? Well, this is the Wo
- 0:06Mier Duo 87 modular keyboard and it has
- 0:09the potential to really speed up your
- 0:11workflow. It has a color touchscreen
- 0:13module that you could swap in and fully
- 0:15customize to quick launch apps, adjust
- 0:17settings, use hot keys, and more. You
- 0:20can even use the smart touchscreen
- 0:21separately off the keyboard so you can
- 0:23keep the stock keycaps or use the
- 0:25included figurine as well. But, how well
- 0:27does it actually work? Is it really easy
- 0:29to customize and how does it actually
- 0:31sound? Well, let's take a closer look
- 0:33and a big thanks to Wo Mier for sending
- 0:35this out for review. In the box, we have
- 0:36the Duo 87 keyboard along with a Duo
- 0:39figurine and magnetic base for it.
- 0:41There's a USB Type-A to Type-C connector
- 0:44cable, four replacement switches, a
- 0:46keycap and switch puller, manual, and
- 0:48there's also the smart deck or play deck
- 0:51along with its own base if you want to
- 0:52use it off of the keyboard. The Wo Mier
- 0:55Duo 87 keyboard comes in at around 924 g
- 0:58or about 2 lb and that's with the stock
- 1:00configuration. However, since this is a
- 1:02modular keyboard, we can actually remove
- 1:04these keys here and swap in the Duo
- 1:07figurine which comes in at around 50 g
- 1:09with the magnetic base attached.
- 1:11Additionally, you can also use their
- 1:12smart deck or play deck and if you
- 1:14attach that just by itself, that comes
- 1:17in at around 61 g. I have the retro gray
- 1:20version, but it also comes in black as
- 1:21well. This is an 80% layout and the case
- 1:24material is an ABS built. Now, if I go
- 1:27ahead and try to flex this, you can see
- 1:29it actually does have significant flex,
- 1:32but there's no type of creaking at all.
- 1:34There's double shot keycaps and these
- 1:36are using Wo Mier's palm switches. Now,
- 1:38do note we have south facing LEDs, but
- 1:40we don't have any shine through keycaps.
- 1:42There's three or five-pin hot swap
- 1:44functionality. Note that when I press on
- 1:46the left key with a lot of force, you
- 1:48can see the other keys nearby being
- 1:50depressed as well, so there is a bit of
- 1:52structural flex. Here's a side view of
- 1:54the keycap profile and if I go ahead and
- 1:56run my fingers along the printed legends
- 1:59on here, you can feel it ever so
- 2:00slightly. The Wo logo is on this glossy
- 2:03area here, which looks really nice. And
- 2:05on the back of the keyboard, this is
- 2:07where we have the USB type-C port. You
- 2:08can only use this in wired mode. There
- 2:10is no wireless connectivity. And on the
- 2:12very back, we have rubber feet to keep
- 2:14this nice and planted. And we have
- 2:16two-stage adjustment feet. Here's a
- 2:17quick look at the specs. Feel free to
- 2:19pause and review or jump ahead to the
- 2:21next section. Here's what the palm
- 2:22switch looks like. So, we have the
- 2:23south-facing LED and it has extremely
- 2:26smooth travel. Here's what it sounds
- 2:27like.
- 2:46The sound profile is really pleasing to
- 2:48the ear, very creamy sounding. There's
- 2:50no type of harsh noises and no type of
- 2:52pinging noises when you're slamming down
- 2:54on the space bar. Similarly, the typing
- 2:56experience is also really enjoyable on
- 2:58here. So, my fingertips are nice and
- 3:00cradled on the keycaps. They have a
- 3:02matte type of finish, so it's not
- 3:03slippery at all. And I don't have a way
- 3:05to actually measure the actuation force
- 3:07on here, but it does take a little bit
- 3:09more force than I'm used to on other
- 3:11keyboards. Just something to keep in
- 3:12mind if you're more of a touch typist,
- 3:14but I don't mind it at all. All of the
- 3:16keys also had really nice travel, very
- 3:18smooth. And more importantly, on the
- 3:20space bar, it doesn't matter if I hit it
- 3:21on the corner, in the middle, or on any
- 3:23of the other corners. It's a nice and
- 3:25consistent depress. I've cut the lights
- 3:27to show the RGB effects. So, I'll go
- 3:29ahead and start lowering the brightness.
- 3:31So, that's the lowest setting. Of
- 3:33course, you can turn it off completely.
- 3:34And here it is at the highest settings.
- 3:36You can also go ahead and slow down the
- 3:38effects, speed it up, [music] and you
- 3:40can go ahead and cycle through various
- 3:42effects as well, as well as using solid
- 3:45colors. And here's the full list of the
- 3:47keyboard commands that you can issue. In
- 3:49terms of modularity, they've made it
- 3:50extremely simple. So, once you remove
- 3:52the key cap and switches, you can just
- 3:55attach a magnetic base either for the
- 3:56figurine or the smart deck. So, you can
- 3:58see it's right now with the smart deck.
- 4:00I'll just go ahead, pop this out. I'm
- 4:02not even going to look. And then I have
- 4:04the figurine here. I can just snap that
- 4:06into place and it's magnetically held
- 4:08into place. That's why it's not falling
- 4:09off. When you're done, just go ahead and
- 4:11swap either of these modules. Again,
- 4:14very simple. It just finds its way home
- 4:16and it's automatically powered up and
- 4:18you're good to go. It really is that
- 4:20simple. Additionally, the smart deck
- 4:22comes with its own base. So, you can see
- 4:24the connector here and there's a USB
- 4:26type-C port right there. So, I have a
- 4:28USB type-C cable connected to my laptop.
- 4:31I'll just go ahead, plug this in just
- 4:32like that. And now I can actually use
- 4:34the smart deck separate or off the
- 4:37keyboard. I could have the default key
- 4:39caps right on here or the figurine and I
- 4:41still have that added functionality.
- 4:43Let's take a look at the dual 87 play
- 4:45deck software, which is pretty cool. So,
- 4:48note that it right now shows print
- 4:50screen, calculator, pause, break and
- 4:51that's exactly what's mirrored on the
- 4:53play deck screen. Now, if I click on
- 4:55screen saver mode, it's going to play
- 4:57the animated GIF files on here and of
- 4:59course I can cycle through these other
- 5:01static images that came pre-loaded. And
- 5:03there was an image of a cat. I replaced
- 5:05it with this image of stars to show it's
- 5:07pretty simple to do. Now, if I want to
- 5:09go back to the keystroke mode, rather
- 5:11than having to open the software, I
- 5:12could just swipe down and I can just
- 5:14switch between these two modes,
- 5:16keystroke mode and the screen saver
- 5:18mode. Now, to use the software, it's
- 5:20actually quite simple. So, on the left
- 5:22side, it's broken down into scenes. So,
- 5:25we have keyboard. Note, if I click on
- 5:26Windows controller, look at the screen.
- 5:29You'll see it switches extremely
- 5:30quickly, basically in real time. There's
- 5:32one favorite web, info board, music
- 5:35console, word. And these are the custom
- 5:37ones. Now, if you click add or the plus
- 5:40sign here, you could add your own custom
- 5:41scenes. So, I've added my own and I've
- 5:43dragged in the tools or kind of assets I
- 5:46want from the right side. But, let's go
- 5:48on the keyboard one. This is the kind of
- 5:50like default one.
- 5:52And you'll notice that on a lot of
- 5:54these, there's this blue arrow. And that
- 5:57is what's going to allow you to cycle
- 5:59through the different scenes because if
- 6:01you just pull down, it would put you
- 6:02into the screen saver mode. So, that's
- 6:05how they've gotten around that issue.
- 6:06So, you can just have this on all of
- 6:08your scenes. Now, to customize this
- 6:11additionally, I've actually clicked the
- 6:13plus sign here and it's added horizontal
- 6:15pages. So, I'll click uh delete for
- 6:17three, but you can see right now there's
- 6:19a two. So, actually, if you look here
- 6:22right now, if I slide over horizontally,
- 6:24I now have a num pad. So, I basically
- 6:26just went into Photoshop, created these
- 6:28numbers, just transparent PNG files. And
- 6:32now I have a num pad, which is something
- 6:34I always miss on a full-size keyboard.
- 6:36Now, to show you how easy it is, I'm
- 6:38going to click hot key, drag it into
- 6:41this box here,
- 6:42and I'm going to click uh nine. So, let
- 6:45me click that again. I'll click nine and
- 6:48then I'll change this image to select
- 6:50local file right here.
- 6:52And I'll give this nine. And instead of
- 6:55cropping it, I'll just say original
- 6:56image. And basically, in real time, it's
- 6:59updated my, you know, kind of makeshift
- 7:01num pad there. Now, I also want a zero
- 7:04on here. So, what I'll do is instead of
- 7:05dragging hot key, I can just go ahead,
- 7:07click copy,
- 7:09paste it in there. I'll click on nine
- 7:11again. I want the hot key to be zero.
- 7:14And I've made an image for zero right
- 7:17here.
- 7:18Click original image, and there you go.
- 7:20So, I now have a functioning num pad.
- 7:22Now, if I jump into Excel, you can see I
- 7:24can go ahead, you know, hit one, hit
- 7:26eight,
- 7:28you know, just like if I had a full-size
- 7:30num pad. That alone is, you know, kind
- 7:33of worth having this on here. The fact
- 7:35that I can easily switch over to a num
- 7:37pad. Now, if I was, you know, regularly
- 7:39going into Excel, I could just, you
- 7:41know, populate this with the Excel icon.
- 7:44Tap on that, open Excel, and then just
- 7:46start typing. So, let's go back over
- 7:48here, and you can see these are the
- 7:51defaults. You can add or remove any of
- 7:53these if you didn't want. You could just
- 7:55right-click, delete this, or re-map it
- 7:57if you want. Now, if we go under Windows
- 8:00controller,
- 8:01again, you have some quick launch icons.
- 8:03So, there's one here for showing your
- 8:05desktop. So, if I just tap on that, you
- 8:07can see my desktop right there. There's
- 8:09one for calculator, one for opening
- 8:11control panel, you get the idea. And
- 8:13basically, you can do whatever you want.
- 8:15Now, favorite web is just going to be
- 8:16bookmarks. You have your info board, you
- 8:18could do times, you know, you could
- 8:19quick launch your drives,
- 8:21Internet Explorer. There's music
- 8:23control, volume up, volume down, really
- 8:25handy, mute. And then, you know, for
- 8:27specific applications like Word. So, for
- 8:30example, you know, country doing control
- 8:32U, you can see that map right there,
- 8:35that hot key assignment. Now, if you
- 8:38want to get an idea of the
- 8:39functionality, so on the right side,
- 8:41these are broken down into these kind of
- 8:42sub-menus right here. So, under Play
- 8:44Deck, you can even create folders, scene
- 8:46shift, previous page, next page, go to
- 8:48page number, and then page indicator.
- 8:51And then, under toolbox, you can see
- 8:52this is where you can pull in, you know,
- 8:54websites, hot key, hot key switch, super
- 8:56keys,
- 8:57mouse events,
- 8:58which is handy. You can open
- 9:01specific files, folders, open apps.
- 9:04You can close things. And for open apps,
- 9:06so under custom, you can see I have one
- 9:09for open Photoshop, one for opening
- 9:11command prompt, Internet Explorer, mail.
- 9:15It's extremely simple to just drag any
- 9:18of these over like open an app right
- 9:19here.
- 9:20You can see I can cycle through all of
- 9:23the various apps on my computer. So, for
- 9:25example, I can say Kaspersky right
- 9:27there.
- 9:28And I can just go ahead, hit that, and
- 9:30it's going to open that up. Really no
- 9:33issues at all. And then, you also have
- 9:34some Windows control stuff like sleep,
- 9:36switching screen, you know, speech
- 9:38detection. In the main settings, this is
- 9:40where we can take a look at the device
- 9:42firmware. We can actually turn the
- 9:44screen off never after a certain amount
- 9:47of time. I'll leave it on never. And we
- 9:49can rotate the display as well. I'm
- 9:51going to leave it back on the default.
- 9:54Now, this is where you can manage
- 9:55scenes. You can delete scenes you know
- 9:56you'll never need or add scenes as well.
- 9:59And you can also set default scenes. So
- 10:01you can see this one is set as the
- 10:02default. And under general, this is
- 10:04where you can check for updates. These
- 10:06are the available languages as well. And
- 10:08you can also go ahead read the user
- 10:10guide if you need to. Something else
- 10:11that's noteworthy is this icon. So if
- 10:13you click on that, it's going to take
- 10:15you to their website, the space station
- 10:18they call it. So under plugins, there's
- 10:19a bunch of different plugins here. Now,
- 10:22I haven't found a way to actually sort
- 10:24by the smart screen or this Play Deck.
- 10:27You can sort by operating system, you
- 10:29know, by price and things like that. But
- 10:31I haven't seen anything for this aspect
- 10:33ratio. So it's probably something that's
- 10:35going to get populated later, you know,
- 10:37once this becomes a bit more mainstream.
- 10:39So yeah, there's a ton of functionality
- 10:41here to add, you know, kind of
- 10:42additional productivity and features to
- 10:45this. While I've loved using the Smart
- 10:47Deck so far and I haven't had any
- 10:49issues, you know, tapping the wrong icon
- 10:51because everything is nicely spaced
- 10:52apart, I would like the ability to have
- 10:54smaller icons just so that I can have
- 10:57more on the screen at one time. You can
- 10:58see right now this is a good layout, but
- 11:00if I go ahead and swipe over where I
- 11:02have kind of this number pad that I've
- 11:04set up, it would have been nice if it
- 11:05could be a little bit smaller so I could
- 11:07add in, you know, a plus, minus, divide,
- 11:10equal, enter sign, and all of that. The
- 11:12touch screen is also plenty responsive,
- 11:14but I would like to see in a future
- 11:16model maybe a bit more premium of a
- 11:18build with a glass screen versus this
- 11:20plastic type of screen. So I've been
- 11:22loving the Duo 87 so far and I think
- 11:24this is a fantastic keyboard if you're
- 11:26someone who likes compact keyboards, but
- 11:27you want that functionality that a
- 11:29full-size keyboard brings because you
- 11:31can easily go ahead just pop the screen
- 11:33and it's extremely modular. Fire up the
- 11:35software just customize it. It's really
- 11:37simple to do and you're off and running.
- 11:39Plus there's potential to add additional
- 11:41plugins and functionality down the line.
- 11:44So the Dygma Raise 87 really gives you
- 11:46the best of both worlds. It's compact
- 11:48plus there's the ability to add
- 11:49additional functionality say like
- 11:51Photoshop actions, Illustrator, After
- 11:53Effects, DaVinci Resolve. You can really
- 11:55customize and fine-tune this exactly for
- 11:58your workflow. So if you're interested
- 11:59in picking up the Dygma Raise 87, I'll
- 12:02leave links down below to their
- 12:03Kickstarter campaign if you want to get
- 12:05in on the early bird pricing. If you
- 12:07like this video, maybe consider checking
- 12:08out this video next and even liking and
- 12:10subscribing and maybe even becoming a
- 12:12member to get access to videos early and
- 12:14other perks. I also review a bunch of
- 12:16other tech that you'll probably enjoy so
- 12:18check those out as well and I'll catch
- 12:20you in the next one soon.
