- 0:56the 19th century becomes a gallery of
- 1:01well-known famous powerful preachers
- 1:05christmas evans the one-eyed preacher
- 1:08the
- 1:08prince of anglesey thomas charles who
- 1:12started the sunday school movement was
- 1:13one of the founders for instance of the
- 1:15british and foreign bible society a
- 1:18great author and of course david morgan
- 1:20the revivalist of the
- 1:221859 revival along of course with other
- 1:26revivalists such as richard owen some
- 1:29years later
- 1:30for a long time i was much troubled in
- 1:32my soul and my heart by thinking over
- 1:34the failure of christianity
- 1:37oh and it seems such a failure such a
- 1:40failure
- 1:42and i prayed and prayed
- 1:44but nothing seemed to give me any relief
- 1:47these are the words of a young collier
- 1:49from west glamorgan
- 1:51he'd left school when he was 12 years
- 1:54old to help his father down the mine he
- 1:56was an unknown outside his village
- 1:59nobody really heard them no great
- 2:01preacher no degree in theology yet in
- 2:04his 26th year
- 2:06in a few weeks
- 2:08he was to become one of the most talked
- 2:10about christians in wales this is his
- 2:14story
- 2:15mostly
- 2:16in his own words
- 2:19evan roberts was born on june the 8th
- 2:211878
- 2:23the son of henry and hannah roberts at
- 2:26island house bulgamoneth on the lache
- 2:29estuary
- 2:31he grew up here he played here and he
- 2:34spent a lot of his time swimming in the
- 2:37lache river on one occasion he even
- 2:41saved his friend from drowning in the
- 2:44dangerous currents it was here that he
- 2:47went to church
- 2:48it was here that he spent his boyhood
- 2:52and later was to begin work in the local
- 2:56coal mine
- 2:59evan robert's love for spiritual things
- 3:02begins at an early age he's converted
- 3:05when he's 13
- 3:07but
- 3:08he decides to seek for a deeper
- 3:11spiritual experience after hearing a
- 3:14deacon in the meeting posing the
- 3:16question what if the spirit came
- 3:20and you were absent i said then to
- 3:23myself
- 3:24i will have the spirit
- 3:27and through all weather and in spite of
- 3:29all difficulties
- 3:30i went to the meetings
- 3:33many times and seeing other boys with
- 3:35the boats on the tide
- 3:37i was tempted to turn back and join them
- 3:40but no
- 3:42then i said to myself remember your
- 3:44resolve to be faithful
- 3:47and on i went
- 3:49pray meeting monday evening at the
- 3:50chapel
- 3:51prem meeting tuesday evenings at pisca
- 3:54church meeting wednesday evening band of
- 3:56hope thursday class friday evening to
- 3:59there i went faithfully throughout the
- 4:01years
- 4:03evan's dedication wasn't only a personal
- 4:06thing
- 4:07it soon developed into a passion and
- 4:09prayer for national revival
- 4:13for 10 or 11 years i have prayed for a
- 4:15revival
- 4:16i could sit up all night to read or talk
- 4:19about revivals
- 4:21it was the spirit that moved me to think
- 4:23about a revival
- 4:26spring 1904 was a key time for him
- 4:30it was a time of a much deeper
- 4:33experience of god he described the
- 4:36experience to wt stead the well-known
- 4:40journalist
- 4:41someone who lost his life just eight
- 4:43years later in the titanic disaster
- 4:48for a long time i was much troubled in
- 4:51my soul and my heart by thinking over
- 4:53the failure of christianity
- 4:55oh and it seems such a failure
- 4:58such a failure
- 5:00and i prayed and prayed
- 5:02but nothing seemed to give me any relief
- 5:04but one night after i'd been in great
- 5:07distress praying about this i went to
- 5:10sleep
- 5:11and at one o'clock in the morning
- 5:13suddenly i was waked up out of my sleep
- 5:14and i found myself with unspeakable joy
- 5:17and awe in the very presence of the
- 5:19almighty god
- 5:21at five o'clock it seemed to me as if i
- 5:23had again returned to earth
- 5:26were you not dreaming
- 5:27no i was wide awake
- 5:30and it was not only that morning but
- 5:32every morning for three or four months
- 5:34always i enjoyed four hours of that
- 5:36wonderful communion with god i cannot
- 5:39describe it i felt it and it seemed to
- 5:41change all my nature and i saw things in
- 5:44a different light and i knew that god
- 5:46was going to work in the land and not
- 5:48this land only but in all the world
- 5:51you put on paper all that you remembered
- 5:53of these times of communion no
- 5:55i wrote nothing at all
- 5:57and it went on all the time until i had
- 5:59to go to newcastle emblen to the college
- 6:02to prepare for the ministry
- 6:04on tuesday 13th of september 1904
- 6:08evan roberts arrived at the grammar
- 6:10school in newcastle emblin with his best
- 6:14friend sydney evans
- 6:18he lodged at t floyd just a few hundred
- 6:20yards from the grammar school
- 6:23between the school and the lodgings was
- 6:25sunnyside
- 6:26the home of the reverend evan phillips a
- 6:29patriarchal figure among the preachers
- 6:31of the day and someone who had
- 6:33experienced the last great national
- 6:36welsh awakening some 45 years previously
- 6:40he preached as a young man alongside the
- 6:43reverend david morgan from asparty
- 6:45astwith
- 6:46the most well known of the 1859 revival
- 6:50preachers
- 6:51by 1904
- 6:53he was the minister of bethel
- 6:56the calvinistic methodist chapel at
- 6:58newcastle emblin and his home sunnyside
- 7:01became a place of fellowship for the
- 7:03students at the grammar school
- 7:05but all was not well for the fledgling
- 7:08student
- 7:09on arriving at the grammar school in
- 7:11newcastle emblin
- 7:12he began to experience
- 7:14a spiritual coldness
- 7:17even the sight of the cross brought no
- 7:19tears to my eyes
- 7:23but this was all soon to change at blind
- 7:26which was to become the defining
- 7:28experience in evan robert's spiritual
- 7:30development
- 7:32before blind anarch we see the quiet
- 7:34unassuming serious student
- 7:37after blind and erich it's evan roberts
- 7:40the revivalist who was to become a
- 7:42household name in wales within six weeks
- 7:46this place was to become at one and the
- 7:48same time a crossroads for evan roberts
- 7:51and a meeting place for others who had a
- 7:53similar vision
- 7:55the chapel at bleinhaner was to be the
- 7:58venue of a convention for the deepening
- 8:00of the spiritual life
- 8:02this was arranged by some spiritually
- 8:04minded local ministers
- 8:06one of whom joseph jenkins from new key
- 8:10was to be deeply involved in north wales
- 8:12revival meetings during the next few
- 8:15months
- 8:16the young people in his church had
- 8:18experienced a powerful refreshing of
- 8:21their faith
- 8:22since february of that year
- 8:25it all began with the public testimony
- 8:27of one 16 year old girl flory evans
- 8:30she declared that she loved the lord
- 8:32jesus with all a heart
- 8:35the effect in the morning service was
- 8:36electrifying
- 8:38and the spiritual fervor spread rapidly
- 8:41to the other youth of the area in the
- 8:43following days and weeks
- 8:46this group of energized and
- 8:48evangelistically minded youth were to
- 8:50make a profound impression on roberts
- 8:53during his time at bleinaner and
- 8:55newcastle emblem
- 8:57also taking part in the convention were
- 8:59two other spiritually awakened ministers
- 9:02w.w lewis and seth joshua
- 9:06seth was an evangelist for the forward
- 9:08movement of the calvinistic methodist
- 9:10church
- 9:12he too had a burden for revival
- 9:15for the last four years he had been
- 9:17burned to pray that god would take a lad
- 9:20from the coal mine or from the field
- 9:22to revive the work in wales
- 9:24even as elijah had been taken from the
- 9:26plow
- 9:28he asked that god would not take a man
- 9:29from the universities which might feed
- 9:32pride and intellectualism
- 9:34but rather use a simple land
- 9:37that the glory might go to god alone
- 9:40seth had kept this mainly to himself
- 9:43until that thursday morning october the
- 9:4529th
- 9:47when he shared it with the students who
- 9:48were traveling with him in the car to
- 9:51blind and eric
- 9:52amongst them was evan roberts who had
- 9:55attended the convention on the wednesday
- 9:57and had obviously been affected
- 10:01speaking to one of evan phillips
- 10:02daughters on that wednesday
- 10:05he noted i have built the altar and laid
- 10:08the wood in order and have prepared the
- 10:11offering
- 10:12i have only to wait for the fire the
- 10:15young elijah was ready and he didn't
- 10:18have long to wait
- 10:20the fire was to fall the next day
- 10:23we started yesterday morning at six it
- 10:26was very fine and dry and full of lovely
- 10:28scenery as we climbed the hills we could
- 10:31see the mist in the valleys as if it
- 10:33were a sea
- 10:35we sang in the cart and my feelings were
- 10:37very varied
- 10:39now high
- 10:41now low
- 10:44the seven o'clock meeting was devoted to
- 10:46asking and answering questions
- 10:49the reverend w w lewis conducted
- 10:52at the close
- 10:54the rev seth joshua prayed and said
- 10:57during his prayer
- 10:58lord do this
- 11:00and this
- 11:01and this
- 11:02and bend us
- 11:05he did not say
- 11:06oh lord bend us
- 11:09it was the spirit that put the emphasis
- 11:11for me on
- 11:12bendes
- 11:14that is what you need
- 11:16is what the spirit said to me and as i
- 11:18went out i prayed
- 11:21oh lord
- 11:23bend me
- 11:25at the breakfast table in the reverend
- 11:27mp morgan's house mag phillips offered
- 11:30me bread and butter
- 11:32i refused
- 11:33as i was satisfied
- 11:35at the same moment the reverend seth
- 11:37joshua was put in his hand to take the
- 11:39bread and butter and the thought struck
- 11:41me
- 11:42is it possible that god is offering me
- 11:45the spirit
- 11:46and that i am unprepared to receive him
- 11:49that others are ready to receive but are
- 11:51not offered
- 11:54now my bosom was quite full and tight
- 11:59on the way to the nine o'clock meeting
- 12:02the rev seth joshua remarked we are
- 12:04going to have a wonderful meeting today
- 12:08to this i replied
- 12:09i feel myself almost bursting
- 12:16the meeting having been opened was
- 12:18handed over to the spirit
- 12:20oh lord pour out your spirit upon me i
- 12:22was conscious that i would have to pray
- 12:24as one
- 12:25and the others prayed
- 12:31i put the question to the spirit
- 12:33shall i pray now
- 12:35wait a minute
- 12:39when others prayed i felt a living force
- 12:42come into my bosom
- 12:44it held my breath and my legs shivered
- 12:47and at every prayer i asked
- 12:49shall i
- 12:50now the living force grew and grew i was
- 12:54almost bursting instantly someone ended
- 12:57his prayer my bosom boiling
- 13:00i would have burst if i had not prayed
- 13:03what boiled me was god commending his
- 13:05love i fell on my knees with my arms
- 13:08over the seat in front of me and the
- 13:09tears and perspiration flowed freely i
- 13:13thought blood was gushing forth
- 13:15mrs davis came to wipe my face
- 13:19for about two minutes it was fearful
- 13:21i cried
- 13:22bend me
- 13:24bend me bend us
- 13:26then
- 13:26oh
- 13:28and mrs davis said oh wonderful grace
- 13:32yes i said oh wonderful grace
- 13:37what bent me
- 13:38was god commending his love and i'm not
- 13:41seeing anything you need to commend
- 13:45after i was bent
- 13:47a wave of peace came over me
- 13:50and the audience sang i hear thy welcome
- 13:53voice
- 13:54[Music]
- 13:55and as they sang i thought of the
- 13:58bending at the judgment day
- 14:00and i was filled with compassion for
- 14:03those who would be bent on that day
- 14:06and i wept in thy precious
- 14:09[Music]
- 14:17i believe the total for this mission is
- 14:20certainly twenty souls
- 14:22grand meetings today at blenheim and
- 14:24many cried for mercy
- 14:27it was a remarkable thing to hear one
- 14:29young man evan roberts he courted the
- 14:32words and prayed
- 14:33bend me
- 14:34bend me o lord
- 14:37unknown to seth
- 14:40this became the answer to his prayer of
- 14:43the last four years
- 14:45that god would take someone not from the
- 14:48ministerial elite not from the students
- 14:52of the great colleges but would take
- 14:56someone from the
- 14:57or from the fields and use them
- 15:00evan roberts
- 15:02becomes a changed man
- 15:06henceforth the salvation of souls became
- 15:08the burden of my heart
- 15:10from that time i was on fire with a
- 15:12desire to go through all wales and if it
- 15:14were at all possible i was willing to
- 15:16pay god for allowing me to go
- 15:21evan experienced increasing difficulty
- 15:23continuing his studies at school on
- 15:26october the 28th he wrote to his sister
- 15:29mary spiritual things have such a hold
- 15:32on me
- 15:33to tell you the truth i have not done
- 15:35much work since i am here
- 15:38i try to shake off these thoughts
- 15:40spiritual thoughts
- 15:42but it would have been as easy to turn
- 15:44back the flow of the sea
- 15:47his only book becomes
- 15:50the bible
- 15:52john phillips the headmaster son of evan
- 15:55phillips the minister of bethel
- 15:57naughts the change in heaven
- 16:00from this point there was no way of
- 16:02getting roberts to school his old desire
- 16:04to benefit the guilty world gained
- 16:06continually in strength during these
- 16:08weeks and he conquered every other
- 16:10desire in his soul
- 16:12to all who knew him there was something
- 16:14strange in his mana now and he caused
- 16:16them great anxiety that his mind was
- 16:18becoming impaired
- 16:21a dr hughes from the united states who
- 16:24happened to be in the area
- 16:26spent some time with him and feared for
- 16:28his mental stability
- 16:31tutors and friends
- 16:33didn't know what to do for the best
- 16:38the month of october was to be a month
- 16:40of intense prayer for god's guidance as
- 16:43to the next step
- 16:44[Music]
- 16:48exactly a week after his experiences at
- 16:51blind henrich evan took part in a
- 16:53revival service in tour guin
- 16:56some five miles from newcastle airmen
- 16:59he was led by joseph jenkins the
- 17:01minister at newquay
- 17:03these early experiences were to give
- 17:05evan roberts the blueprint that he was
- 17:07to follow in his own meetings
- 17:10the minister opened the meeting for
- 17:11anyone to speak and evan roberts took
- 17:14the opportunity of encouraging the
- 17:16congregation to win souls for christ
- 17:20four hours meeting and no one but young
- 17:23people taking part a great number of
- 17:25those young people were girls from
- 17:27newquay
- 17:28teenagers and women in their early
- 17:30twenties already on fire since the
- 17:32spring of the year
- 17:34it was on a long
- 17:35five mile walk from this meeting that
- 17:37evan roberts turning to his best friend
- 17:40and companion sydney evans asked
- 17:43do you think that it is too much to ask
- 17:45god to save one hundred thousand in
- 17:47wales
- 17:48another revival meeting attended by evan
- 17:51roberts was at capital drinkdown on the
- 17:5428th of october
- 17:56anne evan phillips daughter was an
- 17:59eyewitness to the event
- 18:02the reverend joseph jenkins and the
- 18:03girls from nokia were there holding a
- 18:05revival meeting
- 18:07roberts went up early in the afternoon
- 18:08to prepare himself for the six o'clock
- 18:10service
- 18:12he was in the woods praying after
- 18:14entering he had his eyes closed and was
- 18:16under some wonderful influences
- 18:19the meeting went on excellently in
- 18:21singing in prayer but before long it
- 18:23began to cool
- 18:25because speaking took the place of the
- 18:26prayer and praise
- 18:28the meetings going down said roberts and
- 18:30i cannot bear this at once he was on his
- 18:33feet and saying fervently that jesus was
- 18:36not glorified as he should be because
- 18:38people wanted to show themselves
- 18:41with these words he fell in the pill and
- 18:43prayed in such a manner that no one in
- 18:45the congregation had ever heard such a
- 18:47prayer
- 18:49he asked me to sing
- 18:51i refused about five times but at last i
- 18:54did and he accompanied me full of
- 18:55further
- 18:56thanks for the meeting that's couple
- 18:58drink it will be with me eternally
- 19:02evan didn't sleep all night
- 19:05the divine outpouring was so heavy that
- 19:08i had to shout out and ask god to
- 19:10withhold his hand
- 19:13and sister rachel
- 19:15had not experienced the same influence
- 19:17as the others
- 19:18evan asked her if she had refused to
- 19:20obey the holy spirit in any way no i
- 19:23don't think so but i have felt many
- 19:26times on sundays that i would like to
- 19:28repeat some hymn were it not that i fear
- 19:30what people would think and that i want
- 19:32to show myself oh yes he remarked
- 19:35that is it
- 19:37refusing to do a small thing like that
- 19:40is sufficient for him obedience must be
- 19:42given in the smallest thing it looks
- 19:44small to us
- 19:46but when obeying the blessing comes
- 19:49envisioned by the spirituality
- 19:52and the boldness of the new key girls he
- 19:55desires to go back to
- 19:58to reach his own youth with this message
- 20:01this he explains to wt stead
- 20:05one sundays i sat in the chapel i could
- 20:07not fix my mind upon the service for
- 20:10always before my eyes i saw as in a
- 20:11vision the school room in my own village
- 20:14and their sitting rows before me my old
- 20:17companions and all
- 20:32and i heard a voice in my inward ears as
- 20:34plain as anything saying go and speak to
- 20:37these people
- 20:39for a long time i would not but the
- 20:41pressure became greater and greater and
- 20:44i could hear nothing of the sermon
- 20:47then at last i could resist no longer
- 20:49and i said well lord
- 20:52if it is thy will
- 20:53i will go
- 20:55i went to my tutor and told him all
- 20:58things
- 20:59and asked him if he believed that if it
- 21:00was god or the devil
- 21:03and he said
- 21:04the devil does not put good thoughts
- 21:06into the mind
- 21:09i must go and obey the heavenly vision
- 21:12so i went back to my own village
- 21:16on monday october the 31st
- 21:19evan roberts left newcastle emblin for
- 21:23lucker
- 21:24intending to be away for a week
- 21:26he would not return for five months
- 21:30writing to flory evans that morning
- 21:33he asked to be remembered in prayer
- 21:36writing to another of the girls whilst
- 21:38on the train he explains his motives
- 21:41the reason for this is the command of
- 21:43the holy spirit
- 21:44he gave the command last night at the
- 21:46meeting and my thoughts were wandering
- 21:49and my mind riveted on our young flock
- 21:51at mariah there seemed a voice as if it
- 21:54said you must go
- 21:56you must go
- 21:59evan robert's arrival at lucca was
- 22:01unexpected
- 22:02at first his mother thought he was ill
- 22:05he explained that he was going to work
- 22:07amongst the youth of the area and
- 22:09planned to travel throughout wales
- 22:11offering christ to sinners mrs roberts
- 22:15sought to bring him back down to earth
- 22:17by reminding him of school and finance
- 22:21evan replied that
- 22:22god would provide
- 22:24the rest of the family noted the
- 22:26difference in him
- 22:28his speech was changed
- 22:30this wasn't the evan who went to college
- 22:32six weeks previously
- 22:34hearing that his brother dan was off
- 22:36work due to a weakness in his eyes
- 22:39evan declared that his eyes would
- 22:40recover immediately
- 22:42and they did
- 22:44dan was to become another of the key
- 22:46players in the spread of revival over
- 22:49the next few months
- 22:52evan roberts prophetic words to his
- 22:54brother were on the verge of fulfillment
- 22:57dan
- 22:58you shall see there will be a great
- 23:00change at lahar in less than a fortnight
- 23:04we are going to have the greatest
- 23:06revival wales has ever seen
- 23:09monday evening
- 23:10the 31st of october
- 23:131904
- 23:16evan roberts now back at lache goes to
- 23:19the prayer meeting held every monday
- 23:23here at maria
- 23:26at the end of the meeting he asks people
- 23:29to stay behind
- 23:3116 people stay behind plus one little
- 23:36girl
- 23:37it's the beginning
- 23:39of the evan roberts revival meetings
- 23:43here
- 23:44in this church at mariah
- 23:48in two weeks time
- 23:50the excitement will have gone throughout
- 23:53the whole of wales
- 23:55for the next week it's going to be here
- 23:58in this room
- 24:00in pisca just a few miles down the road
- 24:03and in some other local chapels
- 24:06evan roberts is excited
- 24:09things are going to happen
- 24:12things are actually happening
- 24:16on the saturday at the end of that first
- 24:18week he writes to elsie phillips a
- 24:22friend describing what he is going
- 24:25through
- 24:26we hold a prayer meeting every night at
- 24:27eight o'clock
- 24:29these meetings have been a success
- 24:31the young people say they could sit all
- 24:32night
- 24:34monday night i explained to them the
- 24:36object of the mission
- 24:38then i told them of the spirit's work in
- 24:40new key and newcastle emblem and urged
- 24:43them to prepare for the baptism of the
- 24:45holy spirit
- 24:47now this was the plan i have taken under
- 24:49the guidance of the holy spirit
- 24:52there are four things to be right
- 24:55you can go to heaven without being
- 24:56filled with the holy ghost but without
- 24:58being filled you will lose much on the
- 25:00way
- 25:02number one
- 25:03you must obtain full and complete pardon
- 25:06for the sins of the past
- 25:08if the past is not all right
- 25:10it must be made so
- 25:13every sin you know of confess it
- 25:15honestly before god
- 25:17number two is there anything doubtful in
- 25:19your life
- 25:20if so it must be removed and done away
- 25:23with
- 25:24is there a habit of doubtful character
- 25:26in your life away with it
- 25:28if there is
- 25:29there cannot be any joy in your heart
- 25:32until you remove the questionable habits
- 25:34and pleasures
- 25:35self-denial is one of the very first
- 25:38essentials of the religion of christ
- 25:40number three complete and immediate
- 25:44obedience to the holy spirit
- 25:46say not something prompts me to pray it
- 25:49is not something it is the holy ghost
- 25:52whatsoever he says to you
- 25:55do it
- 25:56the world may laugh
- 25:58he did not you will not be here long
- 26:02bow to him now
- 26:04do not say hush when one breaks into
- 26:06prayer resist not the spirit
- 26:10four
- 26:11a public and personal confession of
- 26:14christ
- 26:15how long will it take you to make a
- 26:17confession of christ stand up now do not
- 26:20look at one another
- 26:22out with a confession
- 26:24these are the four things leading to the
- 26:27grand blessing
- 26:29this is our success this week in public
- 26:32confession
- 26:34monday night
- 26:3516
- 26:36tuesday 6
- 26:38wednesday 4
- 26:40thursday 20
- 26:42friday 19
- 26:44total
- 26:4565. by the end of the first week a
- 26:48change was evident in many people this
- 26:51became a talking point in chapel pub and
- 26:53workplace i worked with a lot of men in
- 26:56the coal mines from dallas they were
- 26:57nearly all from dallas the fellas that i
- 26:59worked with
- 27:01let me tell you a little story about
- 27:02dallas
- 27:04it's how the welsh revival came to our
- 27:06village
- 27:08the schoolmaster in our village was a
- 27:10man called t.c thomas this was in 1904
- 27:15he heard that the great welsh revivalist
- 27:17evan roberts
- 27:18was in dallas
- 27:21and so after school one evening he went
- 27:23up to dallas and like everyone else
- 27:26caught fire
- 27:27you just could not go into those revival
- 27:29meetings without catching fire
- 27:32he came down after the uh
- 27:35after the service was over on the coal
- 27:37miners train
- 27:38it gone into the village about quarter
- 27:40to ten now i don't know if it's the same
- 27:42now
- 27:43but at ten o'clock all the taverns
- 27:45closed
- 27:46i captioning not
- 27:53[Music]
- 28:01wore a top available hat and silk tails
- 28:04and a silver silver uh knob cane and
- 28:08he got off the train
- 28:10came out of the railroad station and
- 28:12right there on the road in those days
- 28:13even when we were younger they were
- 28:15still cobbled stones
- 28:17he took off his hat
- 28:19and laid down his cane
- 28:20and got on his knees
- 28:22and began to sing the praises of god and
- 28:25what a great thing it is to to express
- 28:27the things of god in music the apostle
- 28:30paul said that one of the great signs of
- 28:32being filled with the holy spirit is
- 28:34singing to yourselves not speaking to
- 28:35yourselves
- 28:36singing to yourselves in psalms and
- 28:39hymns and spiritual songs he's put a
- 28:42song in our hearts hallelujah and so
- 28:46my grandmother was coming up the hill
- 28:49the bottom the village coming up with a
- 28:51friend of hers that we got to know very
- 28:53well mrs naomi george they were coming
- 28:55up and they heard this singing and they
- 28:57couldn't tell where it was coming from
- 29:00and she went to the janitor of the
- 29:02church of england again a dear old lady
- 29:04that i knew in later years mrs bernal
- 29:07and said mrs bernal you've locked the
- 29:08vicar in the church
- 29:12and mrs burno said never
- 29:14she said oh yes we can hear him singing
- 29:17and so mrs bernal got the key and went
- 29:19to the church of england which of course
- 29:21was also the church of wales but the
- 29:22church of england and uh there was no
- 29:25vicar in the church
- 29:27and they could hear this singing
- 29:29coming from nowhere but coming from
- 29:31everywhere
- 29:33you see
- 29:34just just below just just just 50 or
- 29:37less than that below where tc thomas was
- 29:39singing was the station hotel
- 29:41a tavern
- 29:43and the men heard him sing
- 29:46you've never really heard him singing
- 29:48until you've heard a bunch of welshman
- 29:49outside or inside a tavern singing
- 29:52and
- 29:53someone said tc thomas has gone mad
- 29:57he's on his knees up there singing
- 30:00and some of them with the glasses in
- 30:01their hand went up and they stood around
- 30:03two old tc thomas
- 30:05and there he was with tears streaming
- 30:07down his face and his hands up to god
- 30:09singing uh because all welsh hymnology
- 30:12is packed full of the blood of jesus
- 30:14christ
- 30:16and he was singing and magnifying the
- 30:17blood of jesus
- 30:19and you know
- 30:21just 15 yards above it is sami's
- 30:23billiard halls
- 30:24and the fellas looked out of the window
- 30:27and they said
- 30:28tc thomas is going mad
- 30:31and so they put down their billiard cues
- 30:33and came out and some of them with a cue
- 30:35still in their hand and they stood
- 30:36around
- 30:37poor old tc thomas and now here they
- 30:39were from the station hotel here they
- 30:41were from sami's billion hall it was
- 30:43only quarter to 10 at night and now by
- 30:4510 o'clock we'll say and some of the
- 30:47women came out and and
- 30:49and strange things began to happen
- 30:52tc thomas was quite unaware of any of
- 30:54them being there he was praising god and
- 30:56then and then one man with a beer glass
- 30:58in his hand got down on his knees
- 31:01and began to join with tc thomas and
- 31:04another and another and another until by
- 31:07the time my grandmother came up the hill
- 31:09there they were dozens of men some of
- 31:11them with via glasses in their hand some
- 31:13of them with billiard cues in their hand
- 31:15housewives with their aprons on standing
- 31:18around falling on their knees and that
- 31:20night scores of people give their heart
- 31:22to jesus christ not a preacher near them
- 31:25the holy spirit falling hallelujah
- 31:28singing and praising and magnifying
- 31:30jesus christ praise the lord
- 31:35you know
- 31:36there's a scottish chorus that says it's
- 31:38a prayer that says once more lord once
- 31:41more
- 31:42that's how the revival came
- 31:45to our village
- 31:47my grandfather never got saved he would
- 31:49tell my grandmother you come home here
- 31:52tonight after being in that meeting and
- 31:54i'll beat you up
- 31:56and my grandmother and i oh my george
- 31:58would go to the church and say we've got
- 32:00to be home before 10 o'clock tonight
- 32:02that's the time that their husbands came
- 32:04out of the pubs
- 32:05out of the taverns we've got to be home
- 32:07they were never home before three
- 32:09o'clock in the morning
- 32:10never
- 32:11never
- 32:12never never
- 32:15oh how many times i wish i could be here
- 32:18all day telling you how many times god
- 32:20moved
- 32:21and he's still the same hallelujah
- 32:25this change even affected evan's home
- 32:28our family has had a great change
- 32:31my sister a girl of 16 who before was a
- 32:34sarcastic and peevish girl has had a
- 32:36grand change
- 32:38and the testimony is that she is happy
- 32:40now and that there is some joy in living
- 32:43you can see the change in her face
- 32:47not everyone was positive some said that
- 32:49he was out of his mind
- 32:52others questioned that if the holy
- 32:54spirit is at work
- 32:56why doesn't he come before midnight
- 32:59some called him a deceiver
- 33:01evan robert's controversial methods
- 33:04became such a talking point
- 33:06that people were coming to the meetings
- 33:08to decide for themselves
- 33:10and they were overflowing
- 33:13evan described the second week as a week
- 33:15of direct prayer
- 33:18this began on the sunday evening
- 33:20the revivalist himself described the
- 33:22scene after the service i continued
- 33:25until it was twelve o'clock
- 33:28i said it was not satisfied with it and
- 33:30that we must get the blessing
- 33:32even if it was necessary to stay down
- 33:34until daybreak
- 33:36i said that we would have to strive with
- 33:38heaven
- 33:39now we must believe that the spirit will
- 33:41come not think he will come not hope he
- 33:43will come but finally believe that he
- 33:46will come
- 33:47after this the spirit said that everyone
- 33:49was to pray
- 33:50pray now not confess not sing not give
- 33:54experiences but pray and believe and
- 33:57want and this is the prayer
- 33:59send the spirit now for jesus sake
- 34:03the people were sitting and only closed
- 34:05their eyes
- 34:07the prayer began with me and then it
- 34:09went from seat to seat
- 34:11boys and girls
- 34:13young men and maidens some asking in
- 34:15silence some allowed some coldly some
- 34:18with warmth
- 34:20some formally some in tears some with
- 34:22difficulty some adding to it boys and
- 34:25girls strong voices then tender voices
- 34:30oh wonderful
- 34:31i never thought of such an effect
- 34:34this will be the plan for the week
- 34:37everyone to pray individually for the
- 34:39spirit
- 34:40send the spirit now for jesus christ's
- 34:43sake
- 34:44evan robert's enthusiasm was unbounded
- 34:48and often overpowering
- 34:50meetings went on until three or four in
- 34:52the morning
- 34:53and it wasn't long before the press got
- 34:55to know of the religious goings-on at
- 34:57lache
- 34:59on thursday november the 10th the first
- 35:03report appeared in the columns of the
- 35:05western mail by friday the 11th
- 35:08the western mail had sent a special
- 35:10correspondent to cover the events in
- 35:12detail a remarkable religious revival is
- 35:16now taking place at lucker
- 35:18for some days a young man named evan
- 35:20roberts a native of lucker but at
- 35:23present a student at newcastle emblin
- 35:25has been causing great surprise by his
- 35:27extraordinary orations at mariah chapel
- 35:30such excitement has prevailed that the
- 35:32road in which the chapel is situated has
- 35:35been lined with people from end to end
- 35:38soon all the other newspapers followed
- 35:40suit
- 35:41and consistent coverage was to continue
- 35:43well into 1905. this not only chronicled
- 35:47events
- 35:48but also created a hunger for similar
- 35:50outpourings of the spirit throughout the
- 35:52principality
- 35:54evan roberts progress from lucker to the
- 35:56valleys liverpool and north wales
- 35:59was reported and analyzed here was the
- 36:02new howell harris
- 36:04here was a young man sincere
- 36:06enthusiastic who spoke the language of
- 36:09the people
- 36:11interest in him grew from day to day
- 36:14many other local ministers and young
- 36:16people
- 36:17also took up the challenge to reach
- 36:19wales
- 36:20still many of the national papers
- 36:24couldn't get away from their fascination
- 36:26with evan roberts
- 36:28one of the first press interviews was on
- 36:31friday november the 11th to brindy evans
- 36:34the editor of the freneti mercury
- 36:38it gives us a glimpse of the revivalist
- 36:40at this early stage
- 36:42the young mishna was full of enthusiasm
- 36:45for his work but there were traces in
- 36:47his deathly white face of severe mental
- 36:50strain
- 36:51the long vigils of the weak had
- 36:52evidently told on him
- 36:54and more so as he had been able to sleep
- 36:56but little
- 36:58however there were no signs of fatigue
- 37:00in his conversation
- 37:02he walked up and down the little room
- 37:04with a restlessness the toad of a brain
- 37:06ever at work
- 37:09the toil and long hours were eventually
- 37:12to take their toll but for now evan
- 37:14roberts is unstoppable
- 37:18brinley asked the question
- 37:20are you over taxing your strength
- 37:23no
- 37:24fine i am not
- 37:26the holy ghost will sustain me
- 37:29i was converted 13 years ago and i've
- 37:32been praying for the holy ghost ever
- 37:34since and now it has come
- 37:37oh it is glorious
- 37:40what i want is for the people to know
- 37:42the joy of religion
- 37:44religion was never intended to make a
- 37:46man gloomy it should be the happiest
- 37:49thing in life
- 37:51our fathers
- 37:52thank god for them were saintly men but
- 37:55were gloomy and melancholy
- 37:57as though religion was a sore trial to
- 37:59the flesh
- 38:01what they missed was the joy of our lord
- 38:05they got into a groove
- 38:07and we must now get out of it
- 38:11and getting out of the groove was
- 38:12exactly what happened to welsh
- 38:14non-conformity over the next year or so
- 38:18from lache
- 38:19evan went on a whirlwind tour of the
- 38:22valleys of south wales
- 38:24the various meetings were being
- 38:26chronicled in detail by the newspapers
- 38:29of the day
- 38:30and they were services with a difference
- 38:33the usual format was put to one side
- 38:37here was someone who spoke their
- 38:39language he had a spirituality which was
- 38:42in the vernacular it was different it
- 38:45was sensational his major themes
- 38:49revolved constantly around gethsemane
- 38:54the cross
- 38:56it was as if he himself had been there
- 39:00he
- 39:01felt what it was like to bend to the
- 39:04will of god and when he spoke about that
- 39:07he was often overcome
- 39:09tears in his eyes
- 39:11sometimes he'd have to sit down he
- 39:13couldn't say any more he would
- 39:16he was he was overcome himself
- 39:19he spoke from the heart
- 39:21sometimes
- 39:22his heart spoke for him
- 39:26evan's emotional outpouring was called
- 39:28exhibitionism by his critics
- 39:31the most public being that of the
- 39:33reverend peter price from dallas whose
- 39:35letter was published by the western mail
- 39:38accusing evan roberts of leading a phony
- 39:41revival
- 39:43evan himself never replied to the
- 39:45criticism
- 39:46yet the western mail was full of letters
- 39:48for and against the young revivalist and
- 39:51his methods
- 39:52something which many feel hurt him
- 39:55deeply
- 39:56but deliberate exhibitionism seemed the
- 39:59furthest thing from his mind
- 40:01he often rebuked congregations who he
- 40:04felt came to see a spectacle
- 40:07he was nothing
- 40:09people should come to worship god alone
- 40:13meaning to take away attention from
- 40:15himself
- 40:16he would on occasion remain silent in
- 40:18the pulpit for over an hour
- 40:22yet the result of this unexpected
- 40:24behavior made him even more headlines
- 40:28and there was a mysterious side
- 40:31here was a man who claimed to know what
- 40:33was going on in the hearts and minds of
- 40:35the congregation
- 40:36here was a man who could prophesy how
- 40:39many would be converted in the meeting
- 40:42here was a man who seemed to be a
- 40:44spokesman for god himself on various
- 40:46issues
- 40:47and there was something about that face
- 40:50those eyes
- 40:52there were other differences in his
- 40:54meetings
- 40:55evan roberts team was made up of women
- 40:58young women similar to the girls he had
- 41:00met in newquay
- 41:02they would be involved in singing and
- 41:04testifying but it didn't stop there
- 41:07many dared to step into the male domain
- 41:10and pass on a message or two as well
- 41:14these spiritual suffragettes played as
- 41:17important a part in the services as evan
- 41:19himself
- 41:20even interrupting his messages at times
- 41:23with their musical contributions
- 41:26many became well known during the next
- 41:28year their pictures reproduced in the
- 41:31western mail revival postcards probably
- 41:34the most well known was annie davis of
- 41:36my stag
- 41:38who with her sister and essay jones from
- 41:40nantum oil joined evan's team in
- 41:43mid-november
- 41:47when entering the chapel i knew there
- 41:49was a great power working there
- 41:51my soul was moved to its depths
- 41:54my tears freely flowed when the reverend
- 41:56david hills asked me and said
- 41:59kanaru bethany
- 42:01sing something annie
- 42:03with an irresistible force i leapt from
- 42:05my seat and sang
- 42:07here is love vast as the ocean
- 42:10i could not finish it as i was sobbing
- 42:12too much
- 42:14i could not refrain from weeping
- 42:16throughout the meeting
- 42:18after the meeting evan roberts spoke to
- 42:20me
- 42:21saying you must come with me
- 42:24i went with him and was with him all the
- 42:27time that he was journeying to and fro
- 42:30this wasn't everyone's idea of a woman's
- 42:32place
- 42:33yet the congregation seemed to respond
- 42:36positively
- 42:37to the new feminine touch in the
- 42:39services
- 42:40[Music]
- 42:41the singing wasn't limited to the
- 42:42soloists often the congregation would
- 42:45sing well-known hymns for hours at a
- 42:47time
- 42:48hymns that had now taken on deeper
- 42:51and newer meanings in the heat of
- 42:53revival
- 42:55helping to express
- 42:56the newly felt spiritual truths
- 42:58experienced by thousands of converts
- 43:02incorporated into the meetings
- 43:04with the prayers of the saints
- 43:06fresh
- 43:08real
- 43:08enthusiastic
- 43:10free from the stereotypical forms of
- 43:13previous years
- 43:14they broke all of the rules of grammar
- 43:17and public speaking
- 43:19they also seem to break into heaven
- 43:21itself
- 43:22lord save my father is sure to be in the
- 43:25pub going after him lord i know it's not
- 43:28a respectable place for you to go to but
- 43:30will you go lord save him and bring him
- 43:33to the meeting mother is breaking a
- 43:35heart
- 43:37give me strength to stand against the
- 43:39devil
- 43:40he's pulling hard on my coat
- 43:42but he can pull it to pieces before i
- 43:44give in
- 43:45and the pieces will be the trophies of
- 43:48my victory
- 43:50oh lord if you please when you get hold
- 43:53of samuel owen tell him that the pubs
- 43:55are closed in fisting york
- 43:57he'll be pleased to know
- 44:00lord
- 44:01you are driving a chariot of salvation
- 44:03through this place
- 44:05but please lord
- 44:07not too fast
- 44:09could you slow down a little
- 44:11remember that there are some like me who
- 44:14may not be able to get on in time
- 44:18thank you for calvary and although it's
- 44:20only a little mountain it's grown bigger
- 44:22than the himalayas by now
- 44:24and the whole of wales can see the
- 44:26summit
- 44:28hundreds responded to confess christ
- 44:32the effect of these meetings was seen
- 44:34and felt throughout the principality
- 44:38churches were crowded
- 44:40prayer meetings were held not just in
- 44:42the vestry but in the pit and the steel
- 44:45works
- 44:46there was even a drop in alcohol
- 44:48consumption
- 44:50publicans were complaining that their
- 44:51trade was suffering
- 44:53due to so many turning from alcohol
- 44:56good language replaced bad language
- 44:59many of the pit ponies accustomed only
- 45:02to the cursing and swearing of the
- 45:04miners
- 45:05were unable to comprehend cleaned up
- 45:07speech
- 45:09and as a result didn't work as well
- 45:11even sport suffered
- 45:13as footballers were taken up with the
- 45:16revival meetings and failed to turn up
- 45:18for matches
- 45:20the biggest and most lasting impact of
- 45:23the revival
- 45:25was the change it made in people's lives
- 45:29the western mail published lists of
- 45:31numbers
- 45:33during the revival itself
- 45:35numbers of people who profess to be
- 45:37converted
- 45:3830 in one town 50 in another town 200 or
- 45:42more in another town but the reality of
- 45:45the fact
- 45:47was that these numbers were people
- 45:51people who had experienced a total
- 45:55transformation of their inner and social
- 45:59lives people who would put energy and
- 46:02life into the churches of the future
- 46:06people who never forgot their experience
- 46:10people
- 46:11who saw
- 46:13alcohol
- 46:14changed into
- 46:16chairs and clothes for their children
- 46:19people who experienced a change of
- 46:22language a new language a language that
- 46:26sometimes wasn't even understood by
- 46:28those who are used to them
- 46:30these were new people who'd experienced
- 46:33the old religion
- 46:35but in a brand new way
- 46:38i knew evan roberts personally
- 46:40but he felt called to the ministry and
- 46:42he was studying at newcastle emblem
- 46:44college when seth joshua came back from
- 46:47that church and told of the local
- 46:49revival
- 46:51in uk
- 46:53and evan robert's heart was stirred
- 46:56the students of the seminary petitioned
- 46:59the principal to cancel all classes and
- 47:03let them
- 47:04attend seth joshua's next meeting
- 47:07at a place called blind honor
- 47:10the principal said you'll learn more in
- 47:12one week of revival than three years of
- 47:15study at college
- 47:17so the students all went down there
- 47:21he said to his roommate sydney evans
- 47:24do you think god could give us a hundred
- 47:26thousand souls
- 47:28now if one of my students came and said
- 47:31i want to go into evangelism do you
- 47:33think god would give me a hundred
- 47:34thousand souls i would put it down to
- 47:36enthusiasm
- 47:39but evan roberts was deadly in earnest
- 47:41and it's very interesting in the next
- 47:42five months there were a hundred
- 47:43thousand conversions
- 47:45he went to the principal he said i can't
- 47:47concentrate
- 47:48on my studies
- 47:50i keep hearing a voice that says you
- 47:51must go back and talk to young people in
- 47:54your home church
- 47:55mr phillips he said is that the voice of
- 47:58the spirit or the voice of the devil
- 48:01and the principle said very wisely the
- 48:04devil never gives orders like that
- 48:07so he went home his parents said why
- 48:09don't you study
- 48:11are you in trouble
- 48:12have you been sent down
- 48:14no he said they give me time off to
- 48:16speak to the young people
- 48:18what young people
- 48:19in our church
- 48:21well they said we were in church on
- 48:22sunday and the pastor made no
- 48:24announcement
- 48:25evan roberts says he doesn't know yet
- 48:28now what would you say if you're a
- 48:30pastor and somebody came back from a
- 48:31bible school after two months study and
- 48:34say i've come to preach
- 48:36well you'd be careful
- 48:38not to hurt his feelings
- 48:39you'd be even more careful not to hurt
- 48:41the people's feelings
- 48:43so he didn't invite him immediately to
- 48:45start preaching he said how about coming
- 48:47to the prayer meeting on monday monday
- 48:50night was prayer meeting night
- 48:52he didn't ask him to speak to the prayer
- 48:54meeting
- 48:56at the end of the prayer meeting when
- 48:57they were getting up to go home he's our
- 48:59young brother evan roberts feels he has
- 49:01a word for you if you care to wait
- 49:05many went on home but 17 people waited
- 49:08and evan roberts began
- 49:10like
- 49:11delivering a telegram i have a message
- 49:14for you from the lord
- 49:17you must confess any known sin
- 49:20and put any wrong done to man right
- 49:23again
- 49:25second
- 49:27you must put away any doubtful habit
- 49:31third you must obey the spirit promptly
- 49:36finally you must confess your faith
- 49:39publicly
- 49:41those became the four points of the
- 49:43welsh revival the pastor was so pleased
- 49:45he said we have a mission service
- 49:46tomorrow night would you speak there he
- 49:48spoke at the midweek service on
- 49:50wednesday
- 49:52on thursday at a temperance meeting
- 49:54but they turned it into a general
- 49:55meeting on friday that class meetings
- 49:58they combined them
- 50:00the crowds got so big
- 50:02on sunday a visiting minister came to
- 50:05preach
- 50:06and evan roberts sat on the pew with his
- 50:08family
- 50:10but the people get up at the end of the
- 50:12evening service and we'd like to hear
- 50:13evan roberts again so that another
- 50:15meeting
- 50:17and next week the break came
- 50:21you say what do you mean the break
- 50:24there was a deep moving of the holy
- 50:26spirit
- 50:29it's very interesting that at the same
- 50:30time in north wales
- 50:32a baptist pastor r b jones
- 50:35was preaching
- 50:37and the prayers of the people drowned
- 50:40out his preaching
- 50:42such a move of god's spirit
- 50:46the newspapers in wales
- 50:48were very interested the western mail
- 50:50sent on a reporter report on this
- 50:54he said it was a most unusual meeting
- 50:56there didn't seem to be an order of
- 50:57service
- 50:59yet the people didn't want to go home
- 51:03and he said when the meeting closed at 4
- 51:0525 in the morning
- 51:08make a note of that john
- 51:10when the meeting closed at 4 25 in the
- 51:12morning
- 51:14they didn't want to go home
- 51:16they were standing outside the church
- 51:17still talking
- 51:19and then a very british remark from the
- 51:21reporter he said i felt that this was no
- 51:24ordinary gathering
- 51:27but the news was out
- 51:29and our landslide of interest came
- 51:32on saturday every grocery store in that
- 51:36industrial valley was entered of
- 51:38groceries by people coming to the
- 51:40meetings
- 51:41and on sunday every church packed a
- 51:43suffocation
- 51:45the movement was on
- 51:47i talked to talked to dr martin lewis
- 51:50he died some years ago he said he was
- 51:52just seven years of age when evan
- 51:54roberts came to their valley
- 51:56he wasn't expected
- 51:58his father came back from the mines he
- 52:01was a coal miner took a bath put on a
- 52:03sunday clothes and said come mother
- 52:05we're going to the meeting
- 52:06they went to the big church in the
- 52:08village
- 52:09packed a supplication
- 52:11four o'clock in the afternoon
- 52:14they couldn't find a place but when they
- 52:16saw a mother of three little children
- 52:17they made room for her
- 52:19evan roberts arrived unexpectedly at
- 52:22seven the church was so crowded he
- 52:24climbed on a bench and walked on the
- 52:27shoulders of the men up the aisle and
- 52:30climbed over the front of the pulpit
- 52:32he only said one word in welsh
- 52:36let us pray
- 52:37that's all they ever heard him say
- 52:40everyone began to pray simultaneously
- 52:42aloud
- 52:44you say what kind of praying was that
- 52:46everyone was so in the presence of god
- 52:49he didn't know what anyone else was
- 52:50praying
- 52:52where the spirit of god was moving that
- 52:54people prayed simultaneously i said to
- 52:57martha lewis with a prayer like you know
- 52:58you go to a meeting where people say
- 53:00jesus jesus or lord lord or help us lord
- 53:03or something like that no no everyone
- 53:05praying his own prayer one man was
- 53:06praying oh god give me another chance
- 53:08and i'll put things right
- 53:10and the mother was praying oh god my boy
- 53:13hasn't written to me since he went to
- 53:14liverpool two years ago lord what but my
- 53:17boy somebody else praying something else
- 53:19one man took his elbow and hit mr lewis
- 53:21senior and said would you stop praying
- 53:24tell me how i can become a christian i
- 53:26can't stand this evan roberts left
- 53:31at 10 o'clock at night to go to another
- 53:33meeting
- 53:35his leaving was a commotion of course he
- 53:37had to climb on the shoulders again and
- 53:38walk back
- 53:39but the meeting went on
- 53:41mr lewis at two o'clock in the morning
- 53:43said come mother we better take the
- 53:44children home to bed one child had
- 53:46fallen asleep another was topping over
- 53:48they walked home in the drizzle
- 53:50put them to bed so close to daybreak
- 53:53that mr lewis sat in the rocking chair
- 53:55in front of the kitchen fire and slept
- 53:57till daybreak went off to the mines
- 53:58again came back at three
- 54:00took a bath
- 54:02and said come mother we're going back to
- 54:03the meeting went back to the same church
- 54:06the meeting going full tilt
- 54:09say that's incredible but could you
- 54:11imagine a whole country like that
- 54:14it is no secret what god can do what
- 54:17he's done for others he'll do for you
- 54:21dr martin lloyd jones died earlier this
- 54:23year the famous welsh preacher
- 54:26he said to me once if you want to find
- 54:27out something about the welsh revival
- 54:30and its beginnings get the records of
- 54:33the church at new key in cardigan
- 54:36joseph jenkins said to his young people
- 54:38one sunday morning
- 54:41what does jesus christ mean to you
- 54:44they were embarrassed
- 54:47now there were decent young people they
- 54:49always began their meetings with
- 54:51prayer and singing
- 54:53they love to get around to piano or
- 54:54organ and sing welsh hymns
- 54:57they would give a little testimonies
- 54:58generally recitations if you know what i
- 55:00mean
- 55:01but
- 55:02this was their christian social club
- 55:05it just so happened they were church
- 55:07young people
- 55:08they went on picnics together that's
- 55:11where boy met girl and so forth
- 55:14then there was a silence
- 55:16and when joseph jenkins asked the second
- 55:18time a young fellow spoke up and said
- 55:21jesus christ is the hope of the world
- 55:24he said no no i don't mean that
- 55:26what does he mean to you
- 55:30a girl called flory evans who had only
- 55:32been converted three weeks
- 55:34spoke up
- 55:36in first love and said i love the lord
- 55:38jesus with all my heart
- 55:40and it was so sincere
- 55:42there was a sense
- 55:44of the presence of god in that little
- 55:45meeting
- 55:47joseph jenkins formed the young people
- 55:49into a team he went around preaching and
- 55:51used them for testimony
- 55:54and mrs jesse pan lewis a famous
- 55:58woman christian in wales wrote
- 56:00to the life of faith a magazine in
- 56:02london and said there's a cloud no
- 56:04bigger than a man's hand arising in
- 56:07wales
- 56:08seth joshua went to that church for a
- 56:11week of meetings
- 56:13organized in the usual way but there was
- 56:16such power
- 56:18i have read his diary you'll find it in
- 56:20the national archives of wales
- 56:2219th of september
- 56:24i tried to close the meeting several
- 56:26times last night but it went on
- 56:28without human control
- 56:32peter joshua said his father would say
- 56:34now young people it's three minutes to
- 56:3612.
- 56:37tomorrow's another day
- 56:39so let's have a benediction
- 56:42and you can go home and then have the
- 56:44benediction there'll be a slight pause
- 56:46then someone would say let us pray and
- 56:48they start again
- 56:50when he said now young people
- 56:52it's after 12. tomorrow's another day
- 56:55someone said today is tomorrow this is
- 56:57tomorrow now
- 57:01seth joshua went from there
- 57:04probably the best campaign it ever had
- 57:05in his life up to that time
- 57:07but he hadn't seen anything yet
- 57:09and he went to newcastle england college
- 57:11where there was a young coal miner 26
- 57:13years of age studying for the ministry
- 57:15his name was evan roberts i've read the
- 57:17welsh newspapers of the period there
- 57:19were little snippets of church news
- 57:22like the reverend peter jones has just
- 57:25been appointed chaplain to the bishop of
- 57:26some davids
- 57:28that was very interesting to the
- 57:30episcopalians but not earth shaking if
- 57:32you know what i mean then there are
- 57:33items like mowbray methodist church has
- 57:36had a very interesting rummage cell
- 57:40suddenly a headline great crowds of
- 57:42people drawn to lochur
- 57:45that was evan robert's hometown
- 57:47it said for some days now a young man
- 57:49named evan roberts has been causing
- 57:51great surprise in the moriah church
- 57:55said the main road between swansea and
- 57:57planet on which the church of situate
- 57:59was packed from wall to wall
- 58:01people trying to get into the church
- 58:02shopkeepers were closing early to find a
- 58:04place
- 58:05steel workers and miners were coming in
- 58:07their dungarees
- 58:10now the news was out
- 58:12another occasion he stood up and said
- 58:14how many of you believe the promises of
- 58:16god is a great roar of amen
- 58:20would you agree he said
- 58:22that a promise made by the lord jesus is
- 58:24especially precious
- 58:26well yes
- 58:28do you know one that says where two or
- 58:30three are gathered in my name there am i
- 58:31in the midst yes
- 58:36do we have two or three here tonight
- 58:39great roar of laughter than nearly three
- 58:40thousand
- 58:43is jesus here
- 58:45yes i asked you is jesus here yes
- 58:50do you believe it yes
- 58:53then he said you don't need me he put on
- 58:55his hat and coat and went to another
- 58:56meeting
- 59:01the impact of that revival was
- 59:03astounding
- 59:07as i said a hundred thousand people from
- 59:09outside the churches were added to the
- 59:11memberships
- 59:14not counting maybe a hundred thousand
- 59:16more who were converted to already
- 59:18members when a man is a member of a
- 59:20church and gets converted he doesn't
- 59:21resign and join again
- 59:23so it doesn't show in statistics
- 59:25the social impact was equally powerful
- 59:30judges were presented with white gloves
- 59:32not a case to try
- 59:35now if a man commits a murder in los
- 59:37angeles
- 59:38it may be a year before he comes to
- 59:40trial the calendar so crowded
- 59:43but in those british courts the
- 59:46chamberlain will get up and say your
- 59:47honor there are no cases to try
- 59:51no murders
- 59:52no robberies no rapes no embezzlements
- 59:56nothing
- 59:57and often the judge was presented with
- 59:59white gloves
- 1:00:00a symbol of no cases to try
- 1:00:06they had emergency meetings in the
- 1:00:08district councils to discuss what to do
- 1:00:10with the police now that they were
- 1:00:12unemployed some had an affirmative
- 1:00:14program they said
- 1:00:16well
- 1:00:17we
- 1:00:19respect them for what they want to do
- 1:00:20although they're having to do so let's
- 1:00:22just continue to pay them their salaries
- 1:00:24all they said we're wasting money
- 1:00:26they called in the sergeant of the
- 1:00:28police in one occasion
- 1:00:30what do you do with your time
- 1:00:32well he said before the revival of two
- 1:00:34main jobs one was to prevent crime the
- 1:00:36other to control crowds at football
- 1:00:38games at market days that sort of thing
- 1:00:41since the revival is practically no
- 1:00:43crime
- 1:00:44so we just go with the cries
- 1:00:47a counselor said what do you mean police
- 1:00:49spend their time directing traffic to
- 1:00:51meetings no no he said we have 17 police
- 1:00:54in our station but we've got three good
- 1:00:57quartets if any church wants a quartet
- 1:00:59to sing they just notify the police
- 1:01:06drunkenness was cut in half
- 1:01:08have the figures for the country of
- 1:01:09glamorgan in which cardiff is situated
- 1:01:13cut down from ten thousand arrests a
- 1:01:15year to five thousand within the year
- 1:01:18i came across a case in north wales a
- 1:01:21place
- 1:01:22in anglocy
- 1:01:23where a policeman was on duty outside a
- 1:01:25courtroom
- 1:01:27when he heard a burst of singing in the
- 1:01:28courtroom
- 1:01:29so strange to hear people sing in a
- 1:01:31courtroom he rushed in
- 1:01:33he found the prisoner had broken down
- 1:01:36and confessed he was the sinner asked
- 1:01:38this advocate not to defend him anymore
- 1:01:41the judge took his gavel and said
- 1:01:43i adjourn the court now young man
- 1:01:46may i speak to not as a judge but as a
- 1:01:48christian and he told him you have
- 1:01:50sinned against society but i want to
- 1:01:52tell you first how to get right with god
- 1:01:54and the young man accepted christ there
- 1:01:57and the jury burst into one of those
- 1:01:59great welsh hymns
- 1:02:03and the policeman added his base to the
- 1:02:06choir
- 1:02:09it was phenomenal the reports were in
- 1:02:11every newspaper in the western world you
- 1:02:14look up
- 1:02:15any dallas paper of 1904 towards the end
- 1:02:19of 1904 you find reports of the welsh
- 1:02:21revival
- 1:02:23i decided to research that and i found
- 1:02:25the number who remained in fellowship
- 1:02:28was 82 and a half percent
- 1:02:31which was astounding
- 1:02:33but as i say the social impact was
- 1:02:35even more amazing
- 1:02:38this was the welsh revival
