  17. 1:00we have built a cheap food model and
  18. 1:03that's the one we're dealing with right
  19. 1:04now it's so hard to combat against what
  20. 1:07the TV is telling you to buy your kids
  21. 1:09the kind of food that we eat is the kind
  22. 1:11that's most
  23. 1:13[Music]
  24. 1:19profitable local and regional foods
  25. 1:22taste
  26. 1:23better the weight of the nation is out
  27. 1:27of control but we can fix that how you
  28. 1:30like the market market mean everything
  29. 1:32for this neighborhood we have got to
  30. 1:34come together as a country and really
  31. 1:38make this a
  32. 1:42priority as long as we stick together
  33. 1:44that's what it's about it's not only
  34. 1:46Health it's about survival and
  35. 1:49well-being of the United States as a
  36. 1:52nation the reason we have government in
  37. 1:53the first place is to solve problems
  38. 1:56collectively that we can't solve
  39. 1:57individually if we don't now take this
  40. 2:00as a really serious urgent National
  41. 2:02priority we are all of us individually
  42. 2:05and as a nation going to pay a really
  43. 2:07serious price
  44. 2:17[Music]
  45. 2:34and two three let's do it all together

  51. 3:06[Music]
  52. 3:11Center we're in the midst of an epidemic
  53. 3:14of childhood obesity with childhood
  54. 3:16obesity rates tripling in just a
  55. 3:19generation children who are obese are
  56. 3:21much more likely to become obese as
  57. 3:23adults but the health problems that
  58. 3:25obese children have start right then the
  59. 3:27evidence is incontrovertible that
  60. 3:30children who are obese are at greater
  61. 3:32risk for diabetes later hypertension and
  62. 3:36heart disease um asthma a variety of
  63. 3:40other health
  64. 3:44problems if you were told well your
  65. 3:46child is at risk for cancer that would
  66. 3:49get your attention you were told well
  67. 3:51your child is at risk for some sort of
  68. 3:53brain disease that would get your
  69. 3:54attention well obesity ought to be on
  70. 3:57that list
  71. 4:02[Music]
  72. 4:03often parents feel like they're failures
  73. 4:07they're not doing a good enough job to
  74. 4:09get their kids to eat well and it's
  75. 4:11important for them to just understand
  76. 4:13that there are all these forces working
  77. 4:15against
  78. 4:19them your children are about to enter a
  79. 4:22world where they will be besieged by an
  80. 4:25industry that wants them to eat more
  81. 4:28they will be thrust into a culture that
  82. 4:32Fosters eating at every hour of the day
  83. 4:35around every corner of every street that
  84. 4:37they they go on it will be very
  85. 4:40important to help protect them against
  86. 4:42those influences to buffer them from it
  87. 4:44to try to make the environment safer for
  88. 4:47your
  89. 4:48[Music]
  90. 4:50children I'm afraid because of the uh
  91. 4:54Rising obesity prevalence and its
  92. 4:56related cardi metabolic uh disorders
  93. 4:59inide effects and adverse effects that
  94. 5:01this is probably going to be the first
  95. 5:02generation of children who are going to
  96. 5:04have a shorter life expectancy than
  97. 5:06their
  98. 5:06[Music]
  99. 5:12[Music]
  100. 5:16parents I've struggled with my weight uh
  101. 5:19all my life he's missing out on one I
  102. 5:22think he's missing out on dating just
  103. 5:24going outside and he you know he can't
  104. 5:25he can't walk far he says you know it
  105. 5:28doesn't bother me oh he's so full of
  106. 5:30crap if this kid was 160 lb there'd be
  107. 5:34no stopping him he'd have the the World
  108. 5:36by the
  109. 5:38balls when I walk into a room people
  110. 5:40don't look at me they look at my size
  111. 5:43and um they don't want to get to know me
  112. 5:45or like even in school when I go into
  113. 5:47class I sit in the back of the classroom
  114. 5:49you know try to be as lowkey as possible
  115. 5:52inside of me I do have an urge to go do
  116. 5:55everything see everything you know and
  117. 5:57be amazing but being fat can hold you
  118. 5:59back
  119. 6:02[Music]
  120. 6:15try one more time on the high side
  121. 6:18increasingly we're aware that obese
  122. 6:20children have many of the metabolic
  123. 6:23characteristics of an obese 25y old they
  124. 6:26have elevated insulins they have risk of
  125. 6:29becoming diabetic their blood lipids are
  126. 6:35Disturbed okay lift your arm it's
  127. 6:37important for parents to know that there
  128. 6:38are pretty significant risk factors for
  129. 6:41um overweight and obesity and childhood
  130. 6:43it's not just about their physical
  131. 6:45appearance and we shouldn't be
  132. 6:47interested in solving the problem
  133. 6:49because of the way we think a child
  134. 6:52looks it's much more important than that
  135. 6:54there are pretty significant side
  136. 6:56effects from being overweight and obese
  137. 6:58in child
  138. 7:01childhood if we don't do something to
  139. 7:03prevent it it's going to be full on
  140. 7:07chronic liver disease or um heart
  141. 7:10disease by the time they're in their
  142. 7:12mid-30s we don't hear and look at what's
  143. 7:15going on Under the Skin but um biology
  144. 7:19is telling us that that the health
  145. 7:22impacts of obesity are screaming inside
  146. 7:25they're not silent we just don't hear
  147. 7:28them there too looks that looks like
  148. 7:32about a quarter of the plate so last one
  149. 7:35is how about
  150. 7:37three right there we ignore the early
  151. 7:39years at our Peril if we want to do
  152. 7:41something about um conquering this
  153. 7:44growing epidemic of obesity in our
  154. 7:46society one two you guys getting the
  155. 7:49pattern four out heel down and flex to
  156. 7:54my name is Sophia scaron I'm 14 and A2
  157. 7:57I'm 5' 5 and a quar and I weigh 191 lb
  158. 8:03every day I go out there probably the
  159. 8:05first thing they notice is that person's
  160. 8:07fat I think that definitely builds a
  161. 8:09whole wall from them seeing who I
  162. 8:12actually am and what I actually love
  163. 8:15doing and all my different I guess
  164. 8:18talents I would like to dance but it's
  165. 8:21not realistic if I don't lose the weight
  166. 8:23it's holding me back in every way from
  167. 8:26trying to pursue what I love doing
  168. 8:30[Music]
  169. 8:35I've always loved performing and just
  170. 8:37being able to have everybody just focus
  171. 8:40on you for that one second just this
  172. 8:43feeling of being at being the
  173. 8:49best she was actually very petite and um
  174. 8:53it wasn't until I would say she was
  175. 8:55about 8 or 9 years old that I started to
  176. 8:59see um a growth spurt um and weight gang
  177. 9:03it has been difficult and I I've seen
  178. 9:05how she has uh struggled and and
  179. 9:07suffered from you know the comments of
  180. 9:10her uh classmates and friends my parents
  181. 9:13they do definitely care about my weight
  182. 9:15so they're always like oh Sophia don't
  183. 9:17eat this don't eat that only one portion
  184. 9:19if you don't want to finish it all you
  185. 9:21can take bring it home um it's it's
  186. 9:24constant you know it does definitely get
  187. 9:26very annoying small portion for you too
  188. 9:29I Sophia your plate I've been trying to
  189. 9:32help Sophia on my own I really think
  190. 9:34that she needs um professional help and
  191. 9:36our help as a
  192. 9:47[Music]
  193. 9:50family wa do
  194. 9:55I that's some kilos shoot get to be
  195. 10:03all so here's here's our BMI chart so
  196. 10:08this is where she was a year and a half
  197. 10:10ago and this is where she is today so
  198. 10:12she's not even just following along
  199. 10:14she's actually increasing so she's
  200. 10:16gained 12 kilos over the last 18 months
  201. 10:19wow so that's a lot of weight yes okay
  202. 10:21more than it should be so you see this
  203. 10:24stuff here okay you see how it's darker
  204. 10:27it's called acanthosis this
  205. 10:30is insulin working on the skin oh really
  206. 10:32you know what diabetes is you've heard
  207. 10:34of that so diabetes is high blood sugar
  208. 10:36right that's bad for you I can kill you
  209. 10:39it definitely was a wakeup call I mean I
  210. 10:41felt really shocked because I believe
  211. 10:44that even though I was at a higher um
  212. 10:47weight I would I would still be healthy
  213. 10:50because of the activities that I've been
  214. 10:51doing and I thought that when he said
  215. 10:53about my insulin being high I was like
  216. 10:56oh my God because I didn't think that I
  217. 10:58would be going through this now the
  218. 11:00question is why is her insulin High
  219. 11:02possibly genetic possibly stress and
  220. 11:06lack of sleep so there are a lot of
  221. 11:08things that are tied up in this High
  222. 11:09insulin so sugar is where you start okay
  223. 11:12estimates are that one in three children
  224. 11:15born in the year 2000 will develop
  225. 11:17diabetes sometime in their lifetime and
  226. 11:19this is a direct consequence of the
  227. 11:21Obesity epidemic and emphasizes that
  228. 11:24unless we're able to control this
  229. 11:25epidemic we're going to have an
  230. 11:27abundance of chronic disease and
  231. 11:29disability we never thought that type 2
  232. 11:32diabetes would occur in 10 or 12 year
  233. 11:34olds but now it's not uncommon at all uh
  234. 11:37to see that so these are serious
  235. 11:40consequences and the tendency to dismiss
  236. 11:43this or to perhaps even see it in some
  237. 11:45cultures as a norm uh is getting in the
  238. 11:48way of recognizing this as a real Public
  239. 11:50Health Emergency
  240. 11:52[Music]
  241. 11:59[Music]
  242. 12:10just got it
  243. 12:12thumb I got it in my
  244. 12:17head once there was these girls they
  245. 12:21were teasing me they call me fat and
  246. 12:25they just say you're
  247. 12:27ugly that's rude to me and I'm very sad
  248. 12:31about that I just want tiar to be
  249. 12:34content with her the person who she is
  250. 12:37you know mentally um I want her
  251. 12:39physically he healthy and you know I
  252. 12:42want her emotionally healthy I'm just
  253. 12:44concerned about her health it is such a
  254. 12:47young age you know you have young kids
  255. 12:49you know developing diabetes and you
  256. 12:51know certain issues and I'm just that's
  257. 12:53where my concern comes in
  258. 12:59[Music]
  259. 13:03so we're going to go to this room back
  260. 13:04here and I want you guys to just um make
  261. 13:06yourself
  262. 13:08[Music]
  263. 13:13comfortable Tiara's mother is
  264. 13:15exceptional she noticed a big increase
  265. 13:18in Tiara's weight and was motivated
  266. 13:21enough to seek out the support of our
  267. 13:23program you've probably seen this before
  268. 13:25we do her height for age and her weight
  269. 13:27for age let's make believe we took
  270. 13:31eight-year-olds and lined them up by how
  271. 13:33much they weighed she's about 97th in
  272. 13:36line so the very first thing we do in
  273. 13:38our program is it's almost detective
  274. 13:40work is try to find out what has led to
  275. 13:43the point where we are seeing uh
  276. 13:45patients refer to us TI's case was very
  277. 13:48interesting right around the age of four
  278. 13:51or five years of age she had a big
  279. 13:53increase in her body mass index a big
  280. 13:56spike in weight gain and for us the very
  281. 13:59first visit is a lot of um a lot of
  282. 14:02questions to try to get a sense of what
  283. 14:04happened Tara do you have TV in your
  284. 14:08room yeah you do do you watch it before
  285. 14:10you go to sleep at night I watch it
  286. 14:12every night you watch it every night I
  287. 14:14was trying to do is just completely
  288. 14:16eliminate TV during the week during the
  289. 14:18school week but that did not work with
  290. 14:20tiarra having a television in the
  291. 14:22bedroom has been found to be associated
  292. 14:24with obesity luy Fly Away with charm
  293. 14:30[Music]
  294. 14:32delous the popular belief before was
  295. 14:35that if children are watching more TV
  296. 14:37they're more likely to be couch potatoes
  297. 14:38they're not being Physically Active but
  298. 14:40more and more research is showing
  299. 14:42actually that children are exposed to
  300. 14:44pretty toxic advertising pretty
  301. 14:46significant food advertising that does
  302. 14:49not include fruit and vegetable
  303. 14:50advertising it's all high sugary
  304. 14:53beverages um high sugar
  305. 14:57cereals um and that it really really is
  306. 14:59through the uh content of this
  307. 15:03advertising that television might be
  308. 15:05related to uh to Wakee and obesity and
  309. 15:08children it's a breakfast cereal silly
  310. 15:10rabbit tricks are for kid some catch
  311. 15:13those charms
  312. 15:16got there are five new something magical
  313. 15:19is happening at McDonald's so
  314. 15:21tasty k out Froot Loop cereal part of
  315. 15:24this balanced breakfast ask your parents
  316. 15:26to go to Chuy cheese.com to play cuz in
  317. 15:29Mark boxes of Kell
  318. 15:33cereal back with the Airhead Kung Fu
  319. 15:36Panda 26 packs there's a very large
  320. 15:39research literature on the effects of
  321. 15:40food marketing directly to kids and I
  322. 15:43think it can be distilled into three
  323. 15:44words it's powerful it's pernicious and
  324. 15:48it's predatory and these are very strong
  325. 15:51words but I think absolutely warranted
  326. 15:53by the deplorable environment that's
  327. 15:55created of food marketing about $1.5
  328. 15:57billion dollars a year is spent by
  329. 15:59industry on the marketing of food
  330. 16:01products to Children those foods are not
  331. 16:05the healthiest foods for children the
  332. 16:07worst foods are the ones that get
  333. 16:08marketed most aggressively especially to
  334. 16:11Children kids develop brand loyalty very
  335. 16:14early in life for things like certain
  336. 16:16types of sugar beverages or certain
  337. 16:18types of fast foods studies show that
  338. 16:21food marketing affects children's food
  339. 16:24preferences food choices their diets and
  340. 16:27their health it shapes shes what they
  341. 16:30want to eat what they're willing to eat
  342. 16:32and unfortunately today it shapes what
  343. 16:35they want to eat into foods that will
  344. 16:38kill them that will give them heart
  345. 16:40disease cancer and
  346. 16:46diabetes yummy part of this nutritious
  347. 16:48breakfast it is the advertising which
  348. 16:51drives the food supply which drives the
  349. 16:54likelihood of obesity in children that
  350. 16:55watch a lot of Television the First
  351. 16:57Amendment does doesn't give companies a
  352. 17:00right to deceive children or to
  353. 17:04undermine their health it doesn't give
  354. 17:06them the right to promote unhealthy
  355. 17:09products to children children who don't
  356. 17:12fully understand what marketing
  357. 17:18is speaking
  358. 17:24[Music]
  359. 17:25of there's some suggestion that
  360. 17:27television ads for Foods say gone down
  361. 17:29relative to the advertising that's
  362. 17:30available on TV that doesn't mean that
  363. 17:32food marketing has gone down it means
  364. 17:34that indeed marketers are moving to
  365. 17:36other venues and even though online
  366. 17:38advertising expenditures is still a
  367. 17:40relatively small part of overall
  368. 17:42advertising we're about to see an
  369. 17:44explosion of
  370. 17:50advertising it's clear that public
  371. 17:52health and Industry interests differ
  372. 17:54here industry's interest is in
  373. 17:56protecting the status quo because
  374. 17:58children are such valuable
  375. 18:03customers there's almost perfect overlap
  376. 18:06between the worst nutrition cereals and
  377. 18:08the ones that are marketed most
  378. 18:10aggressively to Children what I imagine
  379. 18:12you'll hear in the subsequent talks is
  380. 18:14that here's a long list of positive
  381. 18:16changes that the industry has
  382. 18:23made what I plan to do today is to show
  383. 18:26how self-regulation is meeting and
  384. 18:28respond to I's recommendations the goal
  385. 18:31was to shift the mix of advertising to
  386. 18:33kids so it included healthier products
  387. 18:35now 84% of cereals our participants
  388. 18:38advertised to kids contain no more than
  389. 18:4110 gram of sugar per
  390. 18:55serving and of course it's not just
  391. 18:58about the shirt it's also about
  392. 18:59nutritional density and that's improving
  393. 19:02too all of General Mill's big gese
  394. 19:04cereals contain at least 8 gram of whole
  395. 19:06grains and last year Kells also included
  396. 19:09whole grains in two of its iconic
  397. 19:11cereals further all of the cereals of
  398. 19:13participants advertised to kids include
  399. 19:15many essential vitamins and nutrients
  400. 19:17and they're usually consumed with milk
  401. 19:19part of this good breakfast crave those
  402. 19:21crazy
  403. 19:22squares food marketing to kids is
  404. 19:25handled almost exclusively through
  405. 19:27self-regulation the company ianes
  406. 19:29themselves Define what is unhealthy food
  407. 19:33for example Kellogg says frosted flakes
  408. 19:35are healthy or General Mills thinks that
  409. 19:38some of their sugary fruit snacks are
  410. 19:40healthy foods which are clearly junk
  411. 19:44food the best fruit tastes this side of
  412. 19:46the Milky
  413. 19:47Way
  414. 19:48catch while the boxes and the names
  415. 19:51still may be goofy but Charming what's
  416. 19:54inside the box has
  417. 19:56changed recently you might have noticed
  418. 19:58that a lot of cereals that you would
  419. 20:00have thought of being more like a
  420. 20:01dessert than a breakfast food are
  421. 20:04starting to really claim that they are
  422. 20:05in fact quite healthy so what you'll see
  423. 20:08are lots of claims like here on Reese's
  424. 20:10Puffs that their whole grain and here on
  425. 20:14the Corn Pops they are a good source of
  426. 20:16fiber or Cocoa Krispies are a good
  427. 20:19source of vitamin D so it's really
  428. 20:22confusing to the consumer to try to
  429. 20:24identify which are the healthy versus
  430. 20:25unhealthy cereals for their families FR
  431. 20:27loops and Apple Jack have 3 G of fiber
  432. 20:30in every Yummy Bowl they're the cereals
  433. 20:32your kids love and the fiber their
  434. 20:34tummies love Froot Loops and Apple Jacks
  435. 20:36an alsoo good source of fiber I have a
  436. 20:39sense of a bit of a trap in the we're
  437. 20:42getting better and better instead of
  438. 20:44getting good our charge is to accelerate
  439. 20:48progress in in the reduction of
  440. 20:50childhood obesity and and we've heard
  441. 20:52one argument which says on the food
  442. 20:55issue at least you can't you can't
  443. 20:57really accelerate progress unless you
  444. 20:59regulate and I'm hearing counterargument
  445. 21:01that no you don't need regulation we can
  446. 21:03we can do this voluntarily and and what
  447. 21:06I'm not hearing is what will it take to
  448. 21:09accelerate
  449. 21:12progress I understand you've gathered
  450. 21:14here in Washington this week to discuss
  451. 21:16some of the most pressing issues that
  452. 21:18your industry
  453. 21:25faces now I know you're all familiar
  454. 21:28with the statistics here how childhood
  455. 21:31obesity rates have tripled over the past
  456. 21:33three decades and that's really where
  457. 21:36all of you come in that it's okay to eat
  458. 21:38unhealthy Foods because they're endorsed
  459. 21:40by the cartoon characters our children
  460. 21:42love and the celebrities our teenagers
  461. 21:44look up
  462. 21:45to so let's be clear it's not enough
  463. 21:49just to limit ads for foods that aren't
  464. 21:51healthy it's going to be so critical to
  465. 21:54increase marketing for foods that are
  466. 21:57healthy
  467. 22:00[Music]
  468. 22:07so we went to Congress and worked with
  469. 22:08Senator Harkin to require the Federal
  470. 22:11Trade Commission and a number of other
  471. 22:13federal agencies to develop one
  472. 22:15consistent set of nutrition standards a
  473. 22:18set of nutrition standards developed by
  474. 22:20experts not by advertisers
  475. 22:28[Music]
  476. 22:37[Music]
  477. 22:57once they came out as a draft standards
  478. 23:00and we saw how much push back there was
  479. 23:03from the food companies then I realized
  480. 23:06what a really good idea it
  481. 23:11was these subcommittees will come to
  482. 23:13order I'm pleased today to be uh holding
  483. 23:16a joint hearing on such an important
  484. 23:18issue clearly the iwgs initial proposal
  485. 23:21went way too far frankly we'd like to
  486. 23:24find out what you have been cooking up
  487. 23:26in the kitchen right now I'm not sure
  488. 23:28sure I like the smell of it Mr vladic
  489. 23:30you recognized for 5 minutes I'm David
  490. 23:32vladic director of the Federal Trade
  491. 23:34commission's Bureau of Consumer
  492. 23:36Protection parents don't have an easy
  493. 23:38task when it comes to getting their kids
  494. 23:40to eat healthier foods the FTC is
  495. 23:42committed to working with its sister
  496. 23:44agencies and all stakeholders to make
  497. 23:47that burden on parents less da daunting
  498. 23:49before coming to CDC I was a professor
  499. 23:51of pediatrics at tus University School
  500. 23:53of Medicine in Boston and I'm a prior
  501. 23:55president of the Obesity Society and
  502. 23:57prior president president of the
  503. 23:58American Society for clinical nutrition
  504. 24:01the more television a child watches the
  505. 24:03more likely they are to consume Foods
  506. 24:04while watching television and those
  507. 24:06foods are more likely to be the foods
  508. 24:08that are advertised on television we
  509. 24:10don't need the federal government
  510. 24:11dictating which foods can be marketed to
  511. 24:14Children the government should stop
  512. 24:16pretending after all these decades that
  513. 24:18it has the answers because it does not
  514. 24:21so rather than being attacked for
  515. 24:24government intrusion or other such
  516. 24:26nonsense um you know we should be saying
  517. 24:28thank you because I think your report uh
  518. 24:30helps all of us as parents and all of us
  519. 24:33as a country I am Dan jaffy Executive
  520. 24:36Vice President of the association of
  521. 24:38national advertisers the iwg in effect
  522. 24:41is attempting to re-engineer the
  523. 24:43American diet by declaring war on many
  524. 24:45healthy products these guidelines need
  525. 24:47to be formally withdrawn and returned to
  526. 24:49the drawing board the food
  527. 24:51manufacturers and advertisers are not
  528. 24:54going to change what has been working
  529. 24:56for them because what has been working
  530. 24:58for them is adding to their profits the
  531. 25:00overwhelming majority of products
  532. 25:03marketed to children are still of poor
  533. 25:06nutritional value industry doesn't even
  534. 25:09want a compromise they want Congress to
  535. 25:13step in and kill the inter Agency workg
  536. 25:16Group we think that this is a very
  537. 25:18radical proposal we don't think that
  538. 25:20that's hype we just think that's the
  539. 25:22fact they were so unhappy to have a
  540. 25:25strong set of nutrition standards
  541. 25:27proposed
  542. 25:28by these federal agencies because they
  543. 25:31want to look like they're limiting junk
  544. 25:34food marketing without really having to
  545. 25:37do
  546. 25:38it the iwg should completely withdraw
  547. 25:41these recommendations and do what they
  548. 25:44were instructed to do by Congress
  549. 25:46conduct a study and Report the findings
  550. 25:49to Congress

  552. 26:24it's just hard to explain to a little

  554. 26:28developing so fast and why she's not
  555. 26:31like the other

  558. 26:44never be my
  559. 26:48kid but when it happens to you it's
  560. 26:52almost
  561. 26:53like it's kind of like life changing
  562. 26:59you understand that sometimes it's not a

  565. 27:07ha for her it's been definitely a
  566. 27:13challenge a lot of the kids were just
  567. 27:15really mean to her like normal kids
  568. 27:17would be you know just taunting and
  569. 27:19teasing her you
  570. 27:22know we've always instilled in her that
  571. 27:24she's beautiful and she's smart and
  572. 27:28you're not supposed to let anybody
  573. 27:30create your self
  574. 27:35worth let's see if I can race you on
  575. 27:37your Scooter Race me okay okay we're

  583. 28:02already a positive person she's very

  595. 28:38kind of show us what to look for we go
  596. 28:41by the calories and the
  597. 28:44sugars just do a little bit more

  600. 28:50her seeing other kids who are in the

  631. 31:41as the childhood obesity epidemic has
  632. 31:43unfolded it has forced a lot of people
  633. 31:45to really look carefully at the
  634. 31:47cafeteria to see how it has
  635. 31:51changed because there is a commercial
  636. 31:54interest meaning that the cafeteria
  637. 31:57needs to be supporting they have really
  638. 31:59been kind of put in a corner where they
  639. 32:01need to figure out a way to sell the
  640. 32:03most product to the students and
  641. 32:05unfortunately what they've done is
  642. 32:07really come to mimic a food court you
  643. 32:09might see in a shopping mall so a lot of
  644. 32:12school cafeterias will have stations set
  645. 32:14up where children can buy chicken
  646. 32:16nuggets and french fries and you know
  647. 32:18hot dogs and
  648. 32:20pizza and all the typical foods that we
  649. 32:22think of as really being fast food and
  650. 32:24unhealthy food
  651. 32:29[Music]
  652. 32:33there a lot of what people call
  653. 32:35competitive Foods because they compete
  654. 32:37with the school lunch program they
  655. 32:40undermine the school lunch program
  656. 32:41because if you can sell hoos and chips
  657. 32:45and Gatorade in competition with you
  658. 32:48know a grilled chicken patty on a whole
  659. 32:52weep bun with a fruit or a vegetable it
  660. 32:54it's hard for that healthy school meal
  661. 32:55to compete
  662. 32:57[Music]
  663. 33:04[Music]
  664. 33:26our school cafeteria is our set up free
  665. 33:28efficiency how do we get as many kids
  666. 33:30through the system as quick as
  667. 33:35[Music]
  668. 33:37possible they don't have good food they
  669. 33:39don't have enough time to eat um it's
  670. 33:42pretty dismal
  671. 33:44[Music]
  672. 33:47actually we see more attention problems
  673. 33:51behavior problems and just exhaustion
  674. 33:54because they're not well fed
  675. 34:00I do not eat the school lunch if I eat
  676. 34:03the food on a regular basis here I gain
  677. 34:06[Music]
  678. 34:08weight I think sometimes as
  679. 34:10organizations we've looked at things
  680. 34:12that are go fast I mean we have fast
  681. 34:15turnarounds we have fast recess fast
  682. 34:17lunch and maybe we just need to slow it
  683. 34:19down a little and look at the questions
  684. 34:22that we're asking ourselves about our
  685. 34:23kids health and nutrition
  686. 34:28I think really what we serve him is more
  687. 34:30convenience for our Central Kitchen to
  688. 34:33mass produce it and get it out and where
  689. 34:35we just have to keep it
  690. 34:38warm today we're serving chicken strips
  691. 34:41each student get three chicken strips a
  692. 34:44third cup of uh fresh fren broccoli and
  693. 34:47an ounz of uh shrip cheddar shredded
  694. 34:51cheese the chicken nuggets are bouncy
  695. 34:54and the pizzas uh takes 10 napkins to
  696. 34:56wipe off the grease so I don't like them
  697. 34:59I don't EES cuz they're pretty
  698. 35:02disgusting MTH produced and that sort of
  699. 35:05sort of I don't think
  700. 35:08that's the system that we currently have
  701. 35:11is is called a prepack system it's it's
  702. 35:13very efficient it's built on the
  703. 35:15Industrial Revolution model where people
  704. 35:18stand in a line and and they pack you
  705. 35:19know the three chicken nuggets and then
  706. 35:21they pack a handful of fries and then in
  707. 35:23a different line they pack in orange
  708. 35:25slices and then vegetables and things
  709. 35:27like that so kids can grab those and and
  710. 35:30eat with their hands on a daily
  711. 35:33basis they're responsible for my child
  712. 35:36when he is there and so they're
  713. 35:39responsible that they're giving him real
  714. 35:41food that they're if they're filling his
  715. 35:43body full of things they should be
  716. 35:45filling his body full of real food and
  717. 35:48parents and Madison have been
  718. 35:49complaining about this at least a dozen
  719. 35:51years my son comes home and says oh I
  720. 35:55had Fizz Edibles and chocolate milk for
  721. 35:57lunch like what the heck is a Fizz
  722. 36:00edible he tried to explain it to us and
  723. 36:03we're like is it like a potato chip well
  724. 36:05sort of is it like a he couldn't I don't
  725. 36:09still don't know what it is it's a
  726. 36:10Goldfish cracker it is is it really
  727. 36:14that's not
  728. 36:19food we need to rethink what is the most
  729. 36:22effective methodology to providing those
  730. 36:25meals to our kids that prepack system
  731. 36:27which it probably isn't anymore I can
  732. 36:29imagine it's hard to balance all of
  733. 36:31those things right you have you have
  734. 36:32this pot of money and you have this
  735. 36:34thing you need to do and I don't think
  736. 36:36it's easy I I can't
  737. 36:38imagine you know how it is that they
  738. 36:41would make that switch but I know others
  739. 36:42have done it and so I expect it I expect
  740. 36:45that they will find you know the you
  741. 36:48know see the best interest of our kids
  742. 36:50and they won't take the shortcuts
  743. 36:52they'll find a way to get fresh food to
  744. 36:53our kids because that's their job Food
  745. 36:56Service in general for a K12 education
  746. 36:58is lowly underfunded for what
  747. 37:00expectations need to be for what we're
  748. 37:02feeding our kids we're painted into a
  749. 37:04corner of pouring more money into food
  750. 37:07service and competing with educational
  751. 37:09programs and the answer unfortunately is
  752. 37:12too easy at the end of the day we're not
  753. 37:14going to take resources out of the hands
  754. 37:16of kids and learning to provide them a
  755. 37:18different food
  756. 37:24product I'm a special assistant to the
  757. 37:26president at the domestic policy Council
  758. 37:28and my role is to um coordinate and
  759. 37:30facilitate the development of
  760. 37:32administration policy on a number of
  761. 37:33issues including childhood obesity and
  762. 37:36and the nutrition programs as well the
  763. 37:38president will shortly be signing into
  764. 37:39law legislation that for the first time
  765. 37:41ever it will give the secretary of
  766. 37:42agriculture the authority to set
  767. 37:44nutrition standards for all foods sold
  768. 37:46in regularly sold in school during the
  769. 37:48school day which um hopefully will
  770. 37:50really change the food landscape within
  771. 37:52schools and really Empower parents who
  772. 37:54release their children into this
  773. 37:55environment to know that when they're
  774. 37:57there they will have um good food to

  776. 38:02eat Harry Truman said that nothing is
  777. 38:05more important in our national life than
  778. 38:07the welfare of our children and proper
  779. 38:09nourishment comes first in attaining
  780. 38:12this welfare all children should have
  781. 38:14the basic nutrition they need to learn

  783. 38:27the healthy hunger-free kids act is the
  784. 38:30strongest Child Nutrition
  785. 38:31reauthorization I think Congress has
  786. 38:33come up with in
  787. 38:39decades it invests more money into the

  810. 40:02french fries on the menu at school it's
  811. 40:04a lays a requirement to boost whole

  815. 40:14classified as a vegetable the Obama

  835. 41:42all the way up tiarra she has this kind
  836. 41:44of dark ring around her neck and it's an
  837. 41:47indication she might have early signs of
  838. 41:50what's called insulin resistance where
  839. 41:51her body can't handle um the insulin uh
  840. 41:55very well we need to figure out out what
  841. 41:57she's eating that might be affecting her
  842. 41:59blood sugar so that we can actually
  843. 42:00start working more specifically on
  844. 42:02changes in her diet to bring down the
  845. 42:04sugar
  846. 42:05content Tara what do you usually drink
  847. 42:07at home orange juice apple juice okay
  848. 42:12any soda drink any soda I used to you
  849. 42:15used to and then what happened now she
  850. 42:18um told me stop drinking soda
  851. 42:22good that is one thing you'll hear from
  852. 42:25a lot of us today is no soda it's not so
  853. 42:28difficult to convince a family that soda
  854. 42:31really has no nutritional
  855. 42:37benefits it's harder to try to convince
  856. 42:40families that juice can have almost
  857. 42:43exactly the same sugar content as a
  858. 42:45glass of soda
  859. 42:51[Music]
  860. 43:02we're substituting juice for soda in so
  861. 43:05many different
  862. 43:06venues Bill Clinton went to the soft
  863. 43:09drink industry to get them to pull sodas
  864. 43:13from elementary schools and the soda
  865. 43:16industry agreed and they have done that
  866. 43:19for the most part around the
  867. 43:21country
  868. 43:23but why did they agree to that the
  869. 43:26reason reason because the soda companies
  870. 43:29also own the juice and sports drink
  871. 43:30companies and those are not included in
  872. 43:33the deal so the only thing that's
  873. 43:34changed is that they've changed the
  874. 43:36vending
  875. 43:41machine
  876. 43:4248% of people's sugar consumption comes
  877. 43:46from sugar sweetened
  878. 43:51Beverages and those calories are half of
  879. 43:55what has been the increase in calories
  880. 43:57in the US in the last 20 30 years we
  881. 44:00need to reduce the sugar do what we can
  882. 44:04to change people's taste buds to the
  883. 44:05degree that they will accept products
  884. 44:07with less sugar in it drink new Kool-Aid
  885. 44:13fun in 2010 children ages 2 to 5 saw

  892. 44:39strengths the American Academy of
  893. 44:41Pediatrics states that energy drinks
  894. 44:43should never be consumed by children or
  895. 44:45adolescent so they're intentionally
  896. 44:47going contrary to what medical advice is
  897. 44:50that kids shouldn't be drinking these
  898. 44:51but they're they're marketing them more
  899. 44:53to kids than they are to grown-ups if
  900. 44:55parents are going to help their children
  901. 44:56develop healthy eating habits and try to
  902. 44:59promote a healthy weight they need to
  903. 45:01stop being undermined by the food

  908. 45:21you drink a lot of sugar that Sugar
  909. 45:23turns into what F yeah which is very
  910. 45:25very unhealthy for the body body and so
  911. 45:27I have a little demonstration here if I
  912. 45:29can have some of the volunteers come up
  913. 45:31and help me with this we have natural
  914. 45:34orange juice we have a Red Bull we have
  915. 45:37a Starbucks frappuccino so out of those
  916. 45:39which one has the most sugar Starbucks
  917. 45:41the Starbucks okay how many teaspoons do
  918. 45:44you guys think it has five keep going 12
  919. 45:47keep going 15 keep going 20
  920. 45:5025 25 teaspoons 100 g of sugar and the
  921. 45:54Starbucks frappuccino the Coke and the

  923. 45:59milk has 16 the orange juice has 10
  924. 46:02teaspoons a lot of parents think juice
  925. 46:05is good for my kids it has vitamin C it
  926. 46:07has a little sprinkle of vitamin C but
  927. 46:09it has a ton of sugar in it if you're
  928. 46:11only going to remember one thing from
  929. 46:12today is to just stop drinking juice
  930. 46:14stop drinking soda you guys don't need
  931. 46:16it changing what we eat and drink making
  932. 46:19it easier to do the healthy things
  933. 46:22that's the sweet spot for public health
  934. 46:24we have to change for children children
  935. 46:28what good looks
  936. 46:33like we know physical activity for all
  937. 46:36Americans of every age has gone down
  938. 46:39over the last 20 30 years and we know
  939. 46:42kids don't do physical activity and we

  945. 46:55see a toddler sitting for hour upon hour
  946. 46:58throughout the course of the day we're
  947. 47:00seeing four 6 8 hours a day engaged in
  948. 47:04sedentary Behavior and the likelihood of
  949. 47:06them then engaging in a sport and
  950. 47:09becoming physically active as they get
  951. 47:11into Elementary School is very
  952. 47:13compromised my daughter got a computer
  953. 47:16and she's on the computer and she's
  954. 47:18communicating with her friends on the
  955. 47:20computer so that's sitting in one spot
  956. 47:23actually she has a computer and she has
  957. 47:24a television and then she'll eat in
  958. 47:27front of the computer and the television
  959. 47:29and that could be that could be my fault
  960. 47:30it feels like I have to get a a crowbar
  961. 47:33to get my kids off the couch sometimes
  962. 47:35on the weekends we have to physically
  963. 47:37push him out the door make him go out
  964. 47:40there against his will to play you when
  965. 47:42the last time you seen kids playing

  985. 48:39not find anything that he connected
  986. 48:43to you'd never want to hear the news
  987. 48:46that things are less than optimal in
  988. 48:49your child's health
  989. 48:56here you
  990. 48:57go okay heels against the wall and try
  991. 49:01to push your belly button backwards you
  992. 49:02look straight
  993. 49:04ahead that's good slide down a little
  994. 49:06bit towards your feet okay kayin it's
  995. 49:08important you stay very still now for me
  996. 49:12kayin was always a kid that would get a
  997. 49:13little wider and then You' get taller
  998. 49:15and then you get wider and you get
  999. 49:16taller and there's a point that he
1000. 49:17wasn't keeping up with that same

1006. 49:30you think well those are adult problems
1007. 49:32I mean you know I have high
1008. 49:33triglycerides and you know spotty
1009. 49:37cholesterol just coming to the level of
1010. 49:39your knees now kayin 2 minutes to go

1012. 49:44shouldn't be having these kinds of
1013. 49:46issues we are almost done hang in

1015. 49:54really like to be below the 85%

1020. 50:10were able to walk to school today less
1021. 50:13than 20% of children walk to school
  1022. 50:15according to the women's sports
1023. 50:17foundation in the last 35 years the
1024. 50:19physical education system for children
1025. 50:21has crumbled PE is no longer mandatory
1026. 50:24in Most states many parents are afraid
1027. 50:26to send kids outside for unsupervised
1028. 50:28play so they end up staring at TV and
1029. 50:30computer screens it turns out that only
1030. 50:32five states actually require physical
1031. 50:35education so more and more schools are
  1032. 50:37making PE
1033. 50:41optional all across the country starting
1034. 50:44a number of years ago schools began to
1035. 50:47drop PE and in fact today only one out
1036. 50:52of six schools in the United States
1037. 50:54require PE at least 3 days days a week
1038. 50:57many of us remember um growing up in
1039. 51:01school settings where we had to change
1040. 51:03into our gym uniforms three four times
  1041. 51:07five times a week um that there's been a

  1044. 51:23that in a recent speech President

1047. 51:30that we prefer to look instead of play
  1048. 51:32ride instead of
1049. 51:34walk I welcome this opportunity to speak
1050. 51:37to the people of America about a subject
1051. 51:40which I believe to be most important and
1052. 51:42that is the subject of physical fitness
1053. 51:44a country uh is as strong really as its
1054. 51:46citizens with the physical development
1055. 51:48of their children with the participation
1056. 51:50in the vigorous life and then also as
1057. 51:53their children get older inculcate into
  1058. 51:55them a desire to maintain that
1059. 52:00big with the cooperation of 19 leading
  1060. 52:03educational and medical organizations
  1061. 52:05the president's Council has developed a

1065. 52:21schools Texas has the sixth highest rate
  1066. 52:25of obesity in children we're the 12th
1067. 52:28basically fattest state in the country
  1068. 52:31and that has consequences it's pretty
1069. 52:33well documented in the state of Texas at
1070. 52:35least if our population continues the
  1071. 52:37way it's going by
1072. 52:402025 private employers will incur an
  1073. 52:43additional 30 plus billion a year in
  1074. 52:48health care cost
1075. 53:01I would argue and this report I think
1076. 53:03would argue that PE is one of the
1077. 53:06smartest Investments this state can make
1078. 53:09prevention is always always always
1079. 53:12cheaper than medicine the bill that I
  1080. 53:14had re had filed was a k312 physical
  1081. 53:18education daily I couldn't pass that
  1082. 53:21bill you cannot
1083. 53:23imagine the the obstacles that that we
1084. 53:26faced I mean it was uh a lot of
1085. 53:29resistance from the administrators who
1086. 53:33who their their strongest argument was
1087. 53:36that the focus needed to be on academic
  1088. 53:38instruction there's a tension principes
  1089. 53:41will say well I can't increase the
1090. 53:42number of fiz head classes because I've
1091. 53:44got to get the math and reading scores
  1092. 53:45up that that's really misguided first
1093. 53:48off even if you don't increase the
1094. 53:50number of hours that kids are spending
1095. 53:52in fizzed you can improve the quality of
  1096. 53:54the physical education
1097. 54:06do you think today if you were to come
1098. 54:08back and file a new PE Bill and and I'm
1099. 54:12sort of pushing on this because I went
1100. 54:14to two schools yesterday they to two
1101. 54:16middle schools they have populations of
1102. 54:18sixth seventh and eighth graders who are
1103. 54:21already overweight and only 8% of senior
1104. 54:25girls are passing 9% of the boys and
1105. 54:28they have fallen off the cliff well our
1106. 54:31agenda was you get the kids exercising
1107. 54:35you you make sure that we've got a an
  1108. 54:37atmosphere a structure and a culture
  1109. 54:39where they're getting exercise every day
1110. 54:41and then it's about calories in calories
1111. 54:44out we're still trying to get it
1112. 54:47reimplemented in high schools from the
1113. 54:49economic perspective which is what
1114. 54:51obviously is my focus if we have a trend
1115. 54:55line going in the wrong direction more
1116. 54:58obesity more overweight less fewer kids
1117. 55:02able to pass a fitness gram than I would
1118. 55:04say to the legislature we're going to
  1119. 55:06have a productivity
1120. 55:08crisis last one the hard work Mar Fusion
  1121. 55:12short CIO work
1122. 55:22out we got more Let Go
1123. 55:26I put in some money uh as controller in
1124. 55:31my last four years to get kids to have a
1125. 55:35fitness Grant so that they would do PE
1126. 55:38and then they would be measured to see
  1127. 55:40what worked there's been considerable
1128. 55:42research that shows that physical
1129. 55:44exercise improves brain development for
1130. 55:47learning kids are getting physical
1131. 55:49activity on most or all days they're
1132. 55:51going to learn better in class if kids
1133. 55:53aren't bouncing up and down in gym
1134. 55:55they're going to be bouncing off the
  1135. 55:56walls in
1136. 56:11class you all have been working really
1137. 56:13hard you got daily PE here what
1138. 56:15improvements of any are you seeing in
  1139. 56:17these kids total Improvement I mean
1140. 56:18these the kids understand and have
1141. 56:20become I would say accountable for their
  1142. 56:23own level of fitness
1143. 56:27I'm just thrilled to see him running I
  1144. 56:28love the got sweatshirts I think it's
  1145. 56:31all
  1146. 56:34[Applause]
1147. 56:37fantastic my belief is that if you give
1148. 56:41kids the opportunity lifetime to do PE
1149. 56:44you will in fact get your money back by
  1150. 56:47reductions in health care

1159. 57:22blessing and so we decided let's give
1160. 57:24this a try and see what they have to
1161. 57:25offer what' you do yesterday I was on my
  1162. 57:27electrical for 20 minutes
1163. 57:30I kayin was making his own goal about
1164. 57:33what he wanted to do Fitness wise and he
1165. 57:35really connected with the staff so he
1166. 57:37wanted to go there he wanted to do their
1167. 57:39after school workout time he was really
1168. 57:42engaged in what they were doing we've
1169. 57:44been very happy to have a team of people
1170. 57:46that can help us help him so he can
1171. 57:48figure out this for himself about how he
1172. 57:50wants to be a healthy young man
  1173. 57:56[Music]
1174. 58:02kin's found Ultimate Frisbee after
1175. 58:05school and has really latched onto that
  1176. 58:08as something that he
1177. 58:10enjoys having him be more aware that he
  1178. 58:13needs to be more active that there's a
1179. 58:15direct connection between activity level
1180. 58:17and health seem to be on the right
1181. 58:21trajectory okay Kaylin come on up and
  1182. 58:23take a
1183. 58:25look now one of the most important
1184. 58:27values on here for us is called the
1185. 58:29percent body fat that tells you what
1186. 58:32percentage of your body weight is fat
1187. 58:35most important to us is how much muscle
1188. 58:37is there and how much fat is there the
1189. 58:41scan that's on the screen now kayin is
  1190. 58:42when you were 11 years old 86 2009 when
1191. 58:47we first met you we did your first scan
1192. 58:49the one I hold in my hand is the one
1193. 58:51that we did today let's take a look at
1194. 58:53some of the changes this is your muscle
  1195. 58:55Total Lean pass back then 28 347 before
  1196. 59:00let's look at today
  1197. 59:0239517 that's great huge increase in
  1198. 59:05muscle mass let's take a look at the
1199. 59:07percent fat Mass our goal was that it
1200. 59:09didn't go up remember that
  1201. 59:1336.2
1202. 59:1534.5 y not only did not go up it went
  1203. 59:17down it's a nice drop
1204. 59:20wow so the relationship between muscle
1205. 59:23and fat is getting better and better kin
1206. 59:26saw all the improvements of the
1207. 59:28different measures seeing the look on
1208. 59:29his face that was great you know it's
  1209. 59:31tangible it's something that we can
1210. 59:32point to and say the things that you are
1211. 59:34doing are having a direct effect on your
1212. 59:37health I mean this is really good news
1213. 59:39that's the kind of thing that motivates
1214. 59:40a teenager in a way that Mom saying you
1215. 59:44need to turn off the television and go
1216. 59:46outside never will he's got some ways to
1217. 59:48go to get his cholesterol and um
1218. 59:51triglyceride is where we want him to be
1219. 59:53but there's so many things that we see
  1220. 59:54every day where he's is doing what we're
1221. 59:56hoping for and he feels good about it
  1222. 59:59that's what counts I would encourage
1223. 1:00:02anybody is in a similar situation they
1224. 1:00:04have the opportunity to take advantage
1225. 1:00:06of a resource like that to do
  1226. 1:00:08[Music]
1227. 1:00:22it Tiara she lost weight and she's more
1228. 1:00:26at home she's not watching as much TV I
  1229. 1:00:29tell her we don't say can't we don't say
1230. 1:00:31I can't do this it may be difficult but
1231. 1:00:34if one person has done it you can do it
  1232. 1:00:37too I'm involved and I want to educate
  1233. 1:00:41my daughter I think it's harder for
  1234. 1:00:44Tiara because I think she's she has the
1235. 1:00:47knowledge but not the understanding you
  1236. 1:00:49know she knows that there's a a issue
  1237. 1:00:52with her health but she doesn't
1238. 1:00:55understand the long term effects of it
  1239. 1:00:57and that's fine that's fine for right
1240. 1:00:59now long as she knows and I can just say
1241. 1:01:02to her you know Tiara healthy unhealthy
  1242. 1:01:04that's good enough for
  1243. 1:01:08me a child hasn't created the
1244. 1:01:10environment in which he or she is living
1245. 1:01:13a child hasn't grown the foods or
1246. 1:01:15marketed the foods or or decided which
1247. 1:01:19uh aspects of the sort of food
1248. 1:01:20distribution system are going to be you
1249. 1:01:23know active in their community a child
1250. 1:01:26doesn't decide where Parks will be
  1251. 1:01:28situated a child doesn't decide how much
1252. 1:01:31education they're going to be able to
1253. 1:01:33get about nutrition and and active
1254. 1:01:36living you know in their school
1255. 1:01:39system the Obesity crisis is a moral
1256. 1:01:42challenge for us as a society but
1257. 1:01:44fundamentally the root of it is the
1258. 1:01:46question of what kind of society are we
1259. 1:01:50and what kind of environments do we owe
  1260. 1:01:52all of our children
1261. 1:01:58we''ve got to develop a multi- sectoral
  1262. 1:02:01multi-component program that addresses
1263. 1:02:03sugar drinks that addresses physical
  1264. 1:02:05activity that addresses physical
  1265. 1:02:07education in schools government has a
  1266. 1:02:09responsibility to act but they're not
1267. 1:02:12the whole answer we also need companies
1268. 1:02:16to step up to reformulate their products
1269. 1:02:19to change their marketing practices to
1270. 1:02:21make healthy options available in
  1271. 1:02:23restaurants families have a
1272. 1:02:24responsibility we all share in this
1273. 1:02:28responsibility and all need to do our
1274. 1:02:30part obesity will crush the United
1275. 1:02:33States and we will fade in the rear view
1276. 1:02:37mirror in Oblivion we could have done
1277. 1:02:40something different we should have done
1278. 1:02:42something different and we lacked the
1279. 1:02:45moral fiber and love for our children to
  1280. 1:02:49do the right
1281. 1:02:52thing it is much better to prevent these
1282. 1:02:55problems s than to try to fix them later
1283. 1:02:58to wait to not intervene early and to
1284. 1:03:01deal with problems after the fact um is
  1285. 1:03:06basically um
1286. 1:03:09sentencing um some part of the
1287. 1:03:12population to a less healthy and shorter
1288. 1:03:16life what a tragedy after all of these
1289. 1:03:19years of building up our health care in
1290. 1:03:22a circumstance where people are saved uh
1291. 1:03:26from premature disability and death we
1292. 1:03:29could turn that all around we could lose
1293. 1:03:31all of those gains it could hardly be
1294. 1:03:33more serious that when you think about
1295. 1:03:35it in those terms do you want your
1296. 1:03:37children and your grandchildren to
1297. 1:03:39inherit a society where their hopes uh
1298. 1:03:42for a long and healthy life are not even
1299. 1:03:43as good as yours were that can't be the
  1300. 1:03:46right thing to
  1301. 1:03:53do we're simply not genetically
1302. 1:03:56programmed to Turn Down calories when
1303. 1:03:58they are in front of us back in the day
  1304. 1:04:00when there wasn't a lot of food
1305. 1:04:02available to us and we were presented
  1306. 1:04:04with a a large animal we needed to
1307. 1:04:06consume as much of it as we possibly
  1308. 1:04:08could over a short period of time we're
1309. 1:04:10living in an environment in which it's
1310. 1:04:12possible to eat yourself into obesity
1311. 1:04:15without any physical activity other than
1312. 1:04:17dialing the cell phone unlimited number
1313. 1:04:19of calories my food addictions
1314. 1:04:22McDonald's pizza with extra cheese fried
1315. 1:04:24chicken fast food I like it at all it's
1316. 1:04:26the policies that promote the way our
1317. 1:04:29communities are designed that promote
  1318. 1:04:31cheaper food anytime I want fast food I
1319. 1:04:33just stand here and go like H what
1320. 1:04:36degree of free will do people really
1321. 1:04:38have if by just knowing someone's zip
1322. 1:04:40code you can pretty well predict their
1323. 1:04:42BMI it would cost the industry about 36
1324. 1:04:45to4 billion if we reduced our caloric
  1325. 1:04:47intake by 100 calories the triple
  1326. 1:04:49Whopper is
  1327. 1:04:511,140 calories most Farmers don't view
1328. 1:04:54what they grow as food but as a
1329. 1:04:57commodity that's going to go into high
1330. 1:04:59fructose corn syrup part of it is it's
1331. 1:05:02the least risky thing to do all that
  1332. 1:05:04corn is
1333. 1:05:05insured we can do something about this
  1334. 1:05:08but it's going to take National
  1335. 1:05:10recognition that this is a priority
