- 0:00this is Puente Grande prison the most
- 0:02fortified prison in Mexico it's known
- 0:05for the large number of guards two
- 0:07guards for each inmate because the
- 0:10prison was dedicated to the most
- 0:11dangerous criminals in Mexico on top of
- 0:14them were drug gang leaders these are
- 0:17not ordinary criminals these are the
- 0:19leaders of tens of thousands of armies
- 0:22and followers heavily armed with all
- 0:24imaginable weapons so attacking the
- 0:26prison suddenly is always expected
- 0:29therefore the prison walls were doubly
- 0:32fortified with heavy concrete reinforced
- 0:35with the strongest type of Steel
- 0:36watchtowers heavily armed guards and
- 0:40checkpoints along the road to the prison
- 0:42the prison was like a military base
- 0:45this was the prison where El Chapo was
- 0:48imprisoned the most famous and dangerous
- 0:50drug lord in Mexican history and
- 0:52worldwide he is the Sinaloa cartel
- 0:55leader The Most Dangerous Drug gang in
- 0:57the world it was named after the Sinaloa
- 1:00state where they came from El Chapo had
- 1:02been pursued for a long time and was
- 1:05arrested for the first time in 1993
- 1:07after a heavy chase by the Mexican
- 1:09authorities although El Chapo was
- 1:12arrested this didn't prevent him from
- 1:14running his Empire from inside the
- 1:16prison he did it through bribery he
- 1:19bribed every single officer and guard in
- 1:22prison with bribes worth millions which
- 1:24granted him Comfort he lived the Cane's
- 1:27life in prison they got him alcohol
- 1:29women and all the food he wanted they
- 1:33even used to allow his two wives and his
- 1:35Mistresses to visit him and with him for
- 1:38days moreover he had Foams to keep
- 1:41running his gang from inside the prison
- 1:43the person who facilitated El Chapo's
- 1:46life most inside the prison was this man
- 1:48damaso Lopez damaso was Deputy Chief of
- 1:52security at Puente Grande prison
- 1:54El Chapo bribed this man to the point
- 1:57that he became his right hand he gave
- 1:59him a house a car gifts and a huge
- 2:03salary this strengthened their
- 2:05relationship and they became friends so
- 2:08damaso was the main reason El Chapo was
- 2:10at a complete Comfort level inside
- 2:12prison to the extent that he could do
- 2:14whatever he wanted
- 2:16El Chapo during his imprisonment period
- 2:19was not only able to run his gang but he
- 2:22was also able to develop a new way for
- 2:24drug trafficking from inside the prison
- 2:26this way wasn't his creation but he and
- 2:30his gang made a revolution in it which
- 2:32is drug trafficking through tunnels El
- 2:35Chapo hired Engineers Architects and
- 2:38Specialists to dig tunnels at a
- 2:40professional level
- 2:41certainly El Chapo through this tunnel
- 2:44was targeting the U.S it was the most
- 2:47profitable place for them El Chapo and
- 2:50his gang Sinaloa cartel didn't need to
- 2:53smuggle drugs anymore neither by air sea
- 2:56or land
- 2:57they became Smugglers through
- 2:59underground tunnels which enabled them
- 3:01to raise the rate of smuggling insanely
- 3:03they began to make 20 million dollars
- 3:06per month
- 3:07imagine that El Chapo's Empire was
- 3:10expanded and grew while he was in prison
- 3:12more than the time he was out Mexico
- 3:14didn't extradite drug gang leaders like
- 3:16El Chapo to the U.S which was always
- 3:19calling for this because they were the
- 3:22ones most affected a huge quantity of
- 3:24drugs had been smuggled to the U.S so
- 3:27they were always asking for El Chapo's
- 3:29extradition and criminals like him since
- 3:31U.S prisons are more fortified than
- 3:34Mexico's besides they would be far away
- 3:37from their gangs and the officers they
- 3:39bribed so that they would no longer have
- 3:41any control over their gangs but the
- 3:44Mexican authorities were refusing such
- 3:46claiming that they were able to handle
- 3:47their criminals this made El Chapo
- 3:50relieved seeing that he was doing
- 3:52whatever he wanted in Puente Grande
- 3:54prison he had never thought about a
- 3:56breakout however in 2001 the Mexican
- 4:00Supreme Court submitted a proposal to
- 4:03create a new law that would allow the
- 4:05extradition of some Mexican criminals to
- 4:07America El Chapo felt in danger when he
- 4:10first heard about the new law of Mexican
- 4:12criminal extradition so he immediately
- 4:14started planning an escape which must be
- 4:17carried out as soon as possible a few
- 4:19weeks later El Chapo had already
- 4:22formulated his solid plan and began to
- 4:24carry it out El Chapo was already aware
- 4:27that only a few people should be
- 4:29involved in the plan so he gave a huge
- 4:32bribe to his assistant demaso and
- 4:34explicitly told him that he wanted to
- 4:36escape damaso replied and assured him
- 4:39that he would help him El Chapo agreed
- 4:41with his friend damaso to reduce the
- 4:43number of guards on January 19
- 4:462001 which was the day El Chapo planned
- 4:50to escape of course demosa would not
- 4:53reduce the number of guards in the
- 4:54entire prison but rather in the section
- 4:57where El Chapo was El Chapo also bribed
- 5:00one of the prison workers named Chito
- 5:02this was one of the workers responsible
- 5:05for the laundry his main task was to
- 5:07take the dirty clothes from the inmates
- 5:09and put them inside a cart that he took
- 5:11outside the prison and placed in a van
- 5:14that would take it to the laundry
- 5:15facility Cheeto was the best choice for
- 5:18El Chapo because he was a normal worker
- 5:20out of sight he only did his usual daily
- 5:23tasks and none of the guards cared about
- 5:26him
- 5:27day had come on January 19
- 5:312001 Cheeto opened El Chapo's cell
- 5:34helped him get into the laundry cart
- 5:37cover him with clothes and push the cart
- 5:39they were able to do all of this
- 5:42comfortably due to the low number of
- 5:43guards in that section
- 5:45in one moment while Cheeto was pushing
- 5:48the cart he reached one of the prison
- 5:50Gates where there was a guard Cheeto
- 5:52stopped the cart and left it to talk
- 5:54with the guard and asked him to open the
- 5:57gate but due to El Chapo's weight the
- 6:00cart began to move backward on its own
- 6:03at that moment El Chapo was scared that
- 6:06the cart would hit the wall flip over
- 6:08and he would fall out and then they
- 6:10would be exposed but his friend chido
- 6:13quickly rushed and ran behind the cart
- 6:15and held it before hitting the wall he
- 6:18moved on his way normally to the prison
- 6:20parking lots where a car was waiting for
- 6:22them El Chapo immediately got into the
- 6:25trunk and they drove out of the prison
- 6:27by the way the car was driven by one of
- 6:30the brideguards for this reason when
- 6:33they went out of the prison exit gate no
- 6:35one stopped them or even searched the
- 6:37car
- 6:38they let them out immediately
- 6:41despite the Escape being quickly exposed
- 6:43the pursuit was delayed because the
- 6:46majority of the local police were in El
- 6:48Chapo's pocket they didn't make a move
- 6:50right away giving him the chance to go
- 6:53far away from the prison
- 6:55afterward the federal police got the
- 6:58news of El Chapo's escape and this
- 7:00police force is hard to bribe unlike the
- 7:03local police the federal forces began
- 7:06the pursuit while Lo Chapo's men were
- 7:08waiting for him somewhere near the
- 7:09prison
- 7:10when he reached them they changed his
- 7:13car and took him in an armored car to
- 7:15another place where a helicopter was
- 7:17waiting for them he got in the
- 7:19helicopter and they took him to another
- 7:21location where another armored car was
- 7:24waiting
- 7:24they moved him to four different
- 7:26locations so that he couldn't be tracked
- 7:29the last car El Chapo took was in Mexico
- 7:32City while they were driving in the
- 7:34streets El Chapo took a look around him
- 7:37to find out that he was surrounded by
- 7:38police cars and motorcycles he was so
- 7:41stressed and worried that he asked the
- 7:43driver about how they managed to track
- 7:45his location
- 7:46the driver reassured him that he had
- 7:48nothing to worry about because all of
- 7:51the police were actually there for his
- 7:52protection
- 7:54El Chapo took a deep breath and felt
- 7:56relieved
- 7:57the corrupt police were surrounding him
- 7:59so that the real police couldn't reach
- 8:01him no one would ever expect that El
- 8:04Chapo would be escorted by that many
- 8:06police cars
- 8:07they went alongside him until they
- 8:09reached one of the gang's safe houses El
- 8:12Chapo's breakout in 2001 had made him a
- 8:15legend to the point that most people
- 8:17began to think that he was above the law
- 8:19and Untouchable although the Mexican
- 8:21authorities devoted considerable
- 8:23resources to the pursuit of El Chapo
- 8:26they were unable to reach him and El
- 8:28Chapo remained free for 14 years
- 8:31during these years El Chapo was moving
- 8:34between his secret safe houses many of
- 8:37which were in isolated areas in the
- 8:39mountains during these 14 years El
- 8:42Chapo's empire grew insanely he used to
- 8:45smuggle cocaine to America worth
- 8:47billions of dollars annually El Chapo's
- 8:50gang expansion and the areas they have
- 8:52taken control of in Mexico have reached
- 8:55an unprecedented level
- 8:57the Sinaloa cartel had become the
- 8:59largest drug cartel in the world
- 9:01uncontested to the extent that it was
- 9:04considered the largest in history
- 9:06surpassing the medal in cartel which was
- 9:09Escobar's cartel reaching this level of
- 9:12power influence and control is
- 9:15impossible without violence therefore
- 9:17acts of violence were insane especially
- 9:20in the northern cities of Mexico the
- 9:23cities that are bordered by America
- 9:24because they are used in drug
- 9:27trafficking so it was like a war El
- 9:29Chapo and his gang turned these cities
- 9:31into war zones causing a lot of
- 9:34unprecedented killings and mass
- 9:36destruction El Chapo managed to destroy
- 9:39all the gangs one after the other taking
- 9:41over the Northern areas this made him
- 9:44the largest and sole Dominator of the
- 9:46drug trafficking movement from Mexico to
- 9:48America the American and Mexican
- 9:50authorities wanted to arrest him at any
- 9:52cost and for this Mission they utilized
- 9:56all their most powerful resources in
- 9:582014 14 years after El Chapo's Escape
- 10:01Mexican intelligence with the help of
- 10:04its American counterpart decided to
- 10:07pursue a new strategy which was to track
- 10:09down the people around El Chapo his sons
- 10:12wives and Close Associates because they
- 10:16were the ones who knew El Chapo the most
- 10:19thanks to their new strategy they
- 10:21managed to reach El Chapo's technical
- 10:23assistant
- 10:24this young man was a Colombian in his
- 10:26twenties the intelligence managed to
- 10:29convince him to work for their benefit
- 10:30and with his assistance they were able
- 10:33to hack the encrypted communication
- 10:35Network used by El Chapo and his gang
- 10:38this way they managed to identify his
- 10:40location and know that he was in a house
- 10:43in Sinaloa which is the headquarters of
- 10:45the gang the house is one of El Chapo's
- 10:48safe houses they identify the House's
- 10:51location and exactly on February 17 2014
- 10:55the Mexican Special Forces along with
- 10:58DEA agents surrounded the house and
- 11:01stormed it the house wasn't ordinary
- 11:03Behind The house's main door there was
- 11:06another steel door the Special Forces
- 11:09kept beating this door trying to break
- 11:11it
- 11:12at the same time El Chapo was sleeping
- 11:15inside all of a sudden his assistant
- 11:18entered his room screaming and told him
- 11:20that the Mexican Army was at the door he
- 11:23jumped out of bed hearing the sounds of
- 11:25hitting on the steel door so he got up
- 11:27from his place and started to move the
- 11:30forces that were outside the house were
- 11:32able to see movements through Windows
- 11:34they saw that there were people moving
- 11:36inside so they intensified the beating
- 11:40on the door even more the windows were
- 11:42also fortified all the house was armored
- 11:45and due to the fact that the windows
- 11:47were small making it difficult to enter
- 11:49through them all their focus and efforts
- 11:52were on the door they kept beating the
- 11:54door until it was broken then they
- 11:57entered the house with their weapons
- 11:58raised ordering all the people that were
- 12:01inside to surrender and lie down on the
- 12:03ground
- 12:04however they were surprised when they
- 12:06found out that no one was inside the
- 12:08house they searched every single room
- 12:11and every corner of the house but no one
- 12:13was there although they saw Shadows
- 12:15moving inside the house when they were
- 12:17outside where did El Chapo go when his
- 12:21assistant entered the room to alert him
- 12:22El Chapo got up from his bed and went
- 12:25immediately to the bathroom not to hide
- 12:28but rather to escape through a tunnel El
- 12:31Chapo's Gang has become professional and
- 12:34has expertise in digging tunnels not
- 12:36only for drug smuggling but also for
- 12:39escaping all their safe houses had
- 12:41underground tunnels in case the house
- 12:43was surrounded by the police El Chapo
- 12:46would immediately run out of the house
- 12:48easily El Chapo managed to escape
- 12:50through a tunnel dug under the bathtub
- 12:53and this is a real image of the tunnel
- 12:55after it was discovered by the Mexican
- 12:57authorities the entrance of the tunnel
- 12:59was smartly designed so that no one
- 13:01would find out unless he knew about it
- 13:04to open the secret entrance a pin must
- 13:07be inserted into a small opening behind
- 13:09the bathroom mirror this would create an
- 13:12electric current that would unlock the
- 13:13lock holding the vafta then it must be
- 13:16lifted by hands the bathtub would raise
- 13:19easily thanks to the hydraulic arms that
- 13:21supported from underneath when El Chapo
- 13:24entered the tunnel he pulled the bathtub
- 13:26out and closed it behind him
- 13:29for this reason the storming forces took
- 13:32their time searching the house until
- 13:33discovering the secret entrance El Chapo
- 13:36managed to escape with his wife his
- 13:39assistant and his Chef through the
- 13:41tunnel and by the time the Special
- 13:43Forces found out about the tunnel
- 13:45entrance El Chapo and those with him had
- 13:47already vanished El Chapo decided to go
- 13:50to a normal place a place where nobody
- 13:52would think he would be there instead of
- 13:55going to one of his isolated safe houses
- 13:57he went to a coastal city named mezatlin
- 14:00it is a touristic City and no one would
- 14:03expect that he might be there but what
- 14:06El Chapo didn't know was that his
- 14:08communication network was hacked he
- 14:10fought the Mexican authorities found his
- 14:12safe house from where he escaped by
- 14:14coincidence but he didn't know that they
- 14:17might find him wherever he went five
- 14:19days after he escaped from the safe
- 14:21house exactly on February 22 2014 the
- 14:26Mexican authorities along with the
- 14:28American agency El Chapo's location in
- 14:31one of the city hotels named Miramar
- 14:34where they managed to surround him and
- 14:36arrest him easily in his room
- 14:38the attached image is a real picture of
- 14:40him at the moment of his arrest
- 14:43he had no protection or guards and he
- 14:45didn't expect they would easily identify
- 14:48his location because he basically didn't
- 14:50know how they were tracking him or that
- 14:52his phone was hacked after El Chapo's
- 14:54second arrest they took him to altaplano
- 14:57prison which is a Maximum Security
- 14:59Prison and the most fortified prison in
- 15:02Mexico
- 15:03you may be wondering why they didn't
- 15:04take him to this prison the first time
- 15:07for the simple reason that El Chapo's
- 15:09first arrest was in 1993. alteplano
- 15:13prison was just established at that time
- 15:15and it wasn't as fortified as it was in
- 15:182014 when El Chapo was arrested for the
- 15:21second time
- 15:22this prison was like a military base due
- 15:25to the abundance of guards weapons and
- 15:28equipment within it the outer wall is
- 15:31surrounded by a large number of
- 15:32watchtowers and each Tower is manned by
- 15:35three or four armed guards carrying
- 15:37heavy weapons although the prison walls
- 15:40are nets they are doubled in two layers
- 15:42and sometimes in three layers in certain
- 15:45prison areas this net fence is
- 15:47constructed and reinforced by heavy
- 15:49concrete with a full meter of thickness
- 15:52there were even ditches all these
- 15:54fortifications were to prevent any
- 15:57external attack
- 15:58as we mentioned before the imprisoned
- 16:00criminals had special armies so they had
- 16:03to be ready for any external attack they
- 16:06even have armored vehicles in the prison
- 16:08in addition to the fact that the entire
- 16:10prison area is a no-fly zone there are
- 16:13sources that say that they have
- 16:15anti-aircraft weapons in anticipation of
- 16:17any air attacks not to mention the
- 16:20broken communication networks in the
- 16:22entire prison area which means that all
- 16:25mobile phones wouldn't work inside the
- 16:27prison and the most important thing is
- 16:30that the officers and guards in this
- 16:31prison are carefully hired to prevent
- 16:34all sorts of bribery although the prison
- 16:36had the biggest criminals and gang
- 16:38leaders in Mexico none of them managed
- 16:41to escape until the arrival of El Chapo
- 16:44as soon as El Chapo entered the prison
- 16:46he began to think about an escape plan
- 16:49because he was afraid of being
- 16:51extradited to America at any moment
- 16:53since the mobile phones were not working
- 16:55inside the prison the only way he had to
- 16:58communicate with the outside world was
- 17:00through the people that were allowed to
- 17:02visit him in prison which were actually
- 17:04two people
- 17:06the first was his lawyer scar Lopez and
- 17:09the second was his third wife EMA
- 17:11Cornell his young wife whom he married
- 17:14in 2007 and she was 32 years younger
- 17:18than him
- 17:19El Chapo began coordinating with his
- 17:22wife so that she could convey his
- 17:24messages to his children and followers
- 17:26his four children were all leaders in
- 17:28his gang but after his imprisonment no
- 17:31one of them took the leadership of the
- 17:33Gang
- 17:34El Chapo had another man who wasn't a
- 17:36family member he considered him his
- 17:38right hand this man was damaso Lopez the
- 17:42deputy chief of security in Punta Grande
- 17:44prison and the corrupt official who
- 17:46allowed El Chapo to do whatever he
- 17:49wanted in that prison
- 17:50after El Chapo's Escape in 2001 demaso
- 17:54was blamed and considered an accomplice
- 17:57so he was fired and couldn't find a job
- 18:00as it was mentioned before damaso and El
- 18:03Chapo were friends which is why El Chapo
- 18:06asked him to join the Gang over the
- 18:09years damaso kept getting promoted until
- 18:12he became El Chapo's right hand in the
- 18:14gang and the leader of the gang after El
- 18:17Chapo's second imprisonment damaso
- 18:20turned from a prison security official
- 18:21to the leader of the world's most
- 18:23powerful drug cartel
- 18:25now El Chapo began to communicate with
- 18:28his right hand damaso and his children
- 18:30from inside the prison through his wife
- 18:32and started moving them so they could
- 18:35get him out of prison as soon as
- 18:37possible before his extradition to
- 18:38America he was really scared of this
- 18:41damaso and El Chapo's children started
- 18:44putting together a plan to get their
- 18:46leader out of prison since damaso was an
- 18:49ex-security official in one of the most
- 18:51fortified prisons in Mexico this gives
- 18:54him an advantage in planning because he
- 18:56knows the security system in prisons on
- 18:59the other side El Chapo inside the
- 19:02prison spent most of his time in his
- 19:04cell he was only allowed to go out for
- 19:06one hour a day
- 19:08there was also a GPS tracker attached to
- 19:11his ankle all the time his cell was
- 19:13under 24-hour surveillance there were
- 19:16cameras inside his cell and the shower
- 19:18was behind that small wall just to give
- 19:20him some privacy El Chapo knew that it
- 19:23was almost impossible to escape from
- 19:25this prison but he was persistent in
- 19:28doing it at any cost and since we are
- 19:30talking about El Chapo and his gang it
- 19:33is obvious that a tunnel would be
- 19:34included in the plan but how would they
- 19:37dig it and from where would it be duck
- 19:40beginning of the digging wouldn't be
- 19:42from inside the prison the tunnel must
- 19:45be dug outside the prison leading inside
- 19:47the prison
- 19:48this may be the first time in history we
- 19:51always hear about prisoners digging a
- 19:53tunnel to escape from prison but a
- 19:55prisoner and his followers digging a
- 19:57tunnel for him from outside the prison
- 19:59is almost impossible the plan's first
- 20:02step is to buy a piece of land or
- 20:04property close enough to the prison that
- 20:06they could dig a tunnel that leads to
- 20:08the prison but at the same time it
- 20:11shouldn't be closed in a way that
- 20:12attracts attention
- 20:14the problem was that alteplano prison
- 20:16was located in an isolated area and
- 20:19surrounded by large agricultural areas
- 20:22the prison was a huge facility in the
- 20:24middle of a vast area of agricultural
- 20:26land with no buildings around
- 20:28after a tiring search El Chapo's gang
- 20:32managed to find an empty construction
- 20:33site about a kilometer and a half from
- 20:36the prison
- 20:37it was most likely used by Farmers it
- 20:40was like an uncompleted building
- 20:42the gang bought this land and registered
- 20:45it in the name of a person who was not
- 20:47suspicious the land became theirs and
- 20:50they now had a starting point from which
- 20:52they could begin digging but it's not
- 20:54that simple how would they know El
- 20:56Chapo's cell exactly besides the cell is
- 21:00under heavy surveillance and even if
- 21:02they manage to dig the tunnel and reach
- 21:04the cell how would they get him out
- 21:06without being exposed the only blind
- 21:09spot is that small shower behind the
- 21:11small wall therefore the only place
- 21:14where the tunnel exit should be is that
- 21:16little shower Square about how how could
- 21:19they dig an underground tunnel from
- 21:21outside the prison with almost a
- 21:23kilometer and a half in length without
- 21:25seeing anything and open and opening
- 21:27specifically in that small place the
- 21:30plan seems impossible reaching the cell
- 21:32itself is a great achievement let alone
- 21:35reaching that particular small spot to
- 21:38solve this problem El Chapo got a
- 21:40brilliant idea that would help his men
- 21:42identify his cell location and exactly
- 21:45that small space behind the wall the
- 21:48idea was inspired by the GPS tracker
- 21:50that was on his ankle the idea was
- 21:53simply to smuggle a GPS to him which he
- 21:56would put in that shower space so the
- 21:58men digging the tunnel could easily
- 22:00identify the exact location the idea was
- 22:03perfect but the problem was smuggling
- 22:05the GPS device
- 22:07Alta Plano was the most fortified prison
- 22:10in Mexico and smuggling anything inside
- 22:12the prison was almost impossible
- 22:15there were many checkpoints inside and
- 22:17outside the prison that must be crossed
- 22:20without being exposed and they wouldn't
- 22:22allow the passage of any tool that might
- 22:24be used to escape or as a weapon El
- 22:27Chapo got another smart idea he asked
- 22:30his wife to tell the gang to insert the
- 22:32small GPS device in a watch
- 22:34this way it could cross all the
- 22:37checkpoints normally his wife managed to
- 22:39smuggle the watch to him easily no one
- 22:42suspected her it was just a normal watch
- 22:45that wouldn't pose any danger or rather
- 22:47that's what the guards thought
- 22:50through that watch and the GPS device El
- 22:53Chapo's men managed to identify the
- 22:55exact location of that particular spot
- 22:57behind that small Wall El Chapo's men
- 23:00had already started the digging process
- 23:02towards the prison but when they got the
- 23:05exact location they knew how to point
- 23:07the digging 100 percent in the right
- 23:09direction
- 23:10as we mentioned before they were experts
- 23:13in digging tunnels so the tunnel they
- 23:15dug was astonishing and professional
- 23:17engineering work at all levels the
- 23:20entrance to the tunnel began at the
- 23:21building
- 23:22by taking a look at the tunnel opening
- 23:24you can see a colossal number of wooden
- 23:27supports then once you enter the 10
- 23:30meter deep tunnel you will realize that
- 23:32the tunnel wasn't just an ordinary
- 23:34Escape tunnel it was meticulously built
- 23:37and undoubtedly the best escape tunnel
- 23:39ever built in prison breakout history
- 23:41such a tunnel required a lot of workers
- 23:43there were most likely 10 to 12 people
- 23:46working non-stop on that tunnel first
- 23:49they needed a ventilation system so they
- 23:52laid ventilation pipes along the
- 23:54kilometer they dug and an air pumping
- 23:56machine was at the entrance of the
- 23:58tunnel they also needed lighting they
- 24:01hung thousands of light bulbs along the
- 24:03tunnel and an electricity generator was
- 24:06also at the entrance of the tunnel it
- 24:08was hidden and they made it look like a
- 24:11cement grilling table they had hidden
- 24:13everything nothing was exposed or
- 24:15visible from outside the brick building
- 24:18this was necessary in case the security
- 24:20or guard suddenly searched they wouldn't
- 24:23discover what was happening below unless
- 24:25they conducted a thorough inspection
- 24:27this was crucial because they were
- 24:29located somewhat close to the prison the
- 24:32scale of this operation was insane
- 24:34thousands of meters of ventilation pipes
- 24:37thousands of lamps and tons of sand were
- 24:40extracted from underground they took
- 24:43them out and disposed of them without
- 24:44being exposed especially since they were
- 24:47a kilometer and a half away from the
- 24:49prison
- 24:50and the ground was flat and empty so it
- 24:53is strange that none of the guards
- 24:54especially those on the watchtowers had
- 24:57noticed them this proves that El Chapo's
- 25:00gang meticulously planned for this
- 25:02operation and had taken all their
- 25:04precautions moreover inside the tunnel
- 25:07they had also made a railroad on which
- 25:10they placed a customized excavation cart
- 25:12that seemed like it was integrated with
- 25:14a motorcycle by which they were
- 25:16intending to transport the sand and
- 25:19later on to help their leader Escape
- 25:20throughout the digging process El Chapo
- 25:24was nervous and anxious he was afraid of
- 25:27his extradition to America for this
- 25:29reason he was always sending letters to
- 25:32his men asking about why the process was
- 25:34taking so long
- 25:35and they were always replying that the
- 25:37matter wasn't that simple it required
- 25:40planning and effort and they should be
- 25:42meticulous in what they were doing
- 25:43finally in June 2015 El Chapo received
- 25:47news from his men that the tunnel was
- 25:49almost ready El Chapo chose the 4th of
- 25:52July 2015 as the day of his Escape why
- 25:56the 4th of July
- 25:58because he wanted to insult America July
- 26:004th is a national day in America it is
- 26:03the anniversary of Independence Day it
- 26:06was a big day for the Americans by this
- 26:09act he intended to send an insulting
- 26:11message to them he wanted to tell them
- 26:14that he managed to escape on the day of
- 26:16their Joy El Chapo had a huge hatred for
- 26:19America although all his money was from
- 26:21there he knew how badly they wanted him
- 26:24and he knew that the American
- 26:26authorities were always asking the
- 26:28Mexican authorities for his extradition
- 26:30unfortunately his men didn't manage to
- 26:33make it
- 26:34the tunnel still needed work so they
- 26:37were forced to postpone the operation to
- 26:39a week later
- 26:40finally the big day had come the day of
- 26:43El Chapo's escape on July 11 2015 the
- 26:48day on which El Chapo would break out of
- 26:51the prison where he spent almost 16
- 26:53months this video footage is from the
- 26:56surveillance cameras that were in his
- 26:57cell on that night El Chapo was watching
- 27:01a comedy series on his small tablet with
- 27:03the volume up attempting to conceal the
- 27:06sounds that his men were making while
- 27:08trying to open the hole each time he got
- 27:11up from his place and walked around the
- 27:13room waiting for a signal from his men
- 27:16at 8 10 El Chapo sat on the edge of his
- 27:20bed put his shoes on and went to the
- 27:22shower space the only hidden place from
- 27:25the surveillance cameras in the whole
- 27:27cell since that time El Chapo has
- 27:30vanished El Chapo entered the opening
- 27:32and went down through a ladder to the
- 27:34underground tunnel where he met with his
- 27:36wife's brother who pointed him to the
- 27:39cart and asked him to get on it El Chapo
- 27:42got on the card and drove it as fast as
- 27:44possible along the tunnel when he
- 27:47reached the other side of the tunnel he
- 27:49went up to the brick building where a
- 27:50quad bike was waiting for him he rode it
- 27:53with one of his men and went on the
- 27:55other side the guards in the prison took
- 27:5840 minutes to discover the Escape they
- 28:00noticed on the surveillance cameras that
- 28:02El Chapo wasn't in his cell they went
- 28:05immediately to check on him
- 28:07at first they thought that he might be
- 28:09hiding behind that shower wall but they
- 28:12were shocked when they found the opening
- 28:14of the tunnel the sirens immediately
- 28:16blared declaring a state of alert but it
- 28:19was too late by that time
- 28:22El Chapo had already traveled a long
- 28:24distance he then arrived at a big truck
- 28:27got into the truck trailer and his men
- 28:29tightly closed it so as not to be seen
- 28:32then the truck drove for approximately
- 28:35two hours until it arrived at a town
- 28:37named San Juan which is located in an
- 28:40area called coratero El Chapo then got
- 28:43on a private jet whose pilot was one of
- 28:45the most trusted by El Chapo in his
- 28:47whole gang this time El Chapo took all
- 28:51necessary precautions not leaving
- 28:53anything to chance there were two Jets
- 28:56the first would take El Chapo to his
- 28:58destination and the second would fly to
- 29:01mislead everyone that might be pursuing
- 29:03him El Chapo decided to go hide in one
- 29:06of his safe houses it was like a castle
- 29:08that is located in the mountains in
- 29:10Sinaloa it was the most fortified and
- 29:13safest place for El Chapo which they
- 29:16used to call the sky El Chapo's Escape
- 29:19caused Great embarrassment to the
- 29:21Mexican authorities because just a year
- 29:23ago they boasted of his arrest in front
- 29:26of the world considering it the greatest
- 29:28achievement in the war against drugs and
- 29:31crime the Mexican authorities have
- 29:33harnessed a large part of their forces
- 29:35and resources to hunt down El Chapo at
- 29:38any cost if only El Chapo had kept
- 29:40hiding in his secret houses in the
- 29:42mountains it would have been difficult
- 29:44for the authorities to track him but El
- 29:46Chapo kept moving from one city to
- 29:49another visiting his gang headquarters
- 29:51meeting his followers and giving them
- 29:54orders this was very important to
- 29:56maintain his control and Leadership over
- 29:58the gang but it put him in danger and
- 30:01made his tracking easier especially
- 30:04since the Mexican authorities were
- 30:05supported by the Americans they fully
- 30:08cooperated in El Chapo's case the
- 30:10American authorities provided the
- 30:12Mexicans with all sorts of newly
- 30:14developed Technologies for tracking and
- 30:16monitoring
- 30:17the Mexican intelligence with the help
- 30:19of the Americans managed to locate a
- 30:22house in Los moches which is a city in
- 30:25the north of Sinaloa state
- 30:27in this house the intelligence team
- 30:29noticed that there was a movement by El
- 30:31Chapo's gang
- 30:33they started eavesdropping on them and
- 30:36noticed that they used the nickname
- 30:37Grandma to refer to a specific person
- 30:40for example they say Grand mud is coming
- 30:44prepare yourself for Grandma it clear
- 30:47that they met a particular person by
- 30:49this nickname that seemed important and
- 30:52the intelligence team suspected that it
- 30:54might be El Chapo himself indeed the
- 30:57next day a convoy of three cars arrived
- 31:00so it was clear that this Convoy was for
- 31:03an important person the first time the
- 31:05cars arrived they entered the garage
- 31:07directly and the agents who were
- 31:10monitoring the place could not identify
- 31:12the person who was inside the car so the
- 31:14Mexican intelligence kept eavesdropping
- 31:16on their calls and monitoring the house
- 31:19for a period
- 31:20during which they became almost sure
- 31:22that El Chapo was inside the house this
- 31:26was confirmed after hearing his voice or
- 31:28what appeared to be his voice through
- 31:30eavesdropping on their calls besides the
- 31:33fact that such preparations and
- 31:34protection wouldn't be for someone else
- 31:36but El Chapo on the morning of January 8
- 31:402016 six months after El Chapo's escape
- 31:44the Mexican forces decided to Storm the
- 31:47House a group of Special Forces
- 31:49surrounded the place backed by DEA
- 31:52agents and stormed the house
- 31:54then a bloody armed conflict occurred
- 31:57between them and El Chapo's followers it
- 32:00was violent and all its victims were
- 32:02among the Gang
- 32:04as for the Special Forces some of them
- 32:06were injured but nobody died because of
- 32:09their meticulous and well-prepared
- 32:11attack
- 32:12after the fight had ended they didn't
- 32:14find El Chapo he escaped for the second
- 32:17time through an underground tunnel
- 32:19this mirror was a secret door that led
- 32:22to the underground tunnel
- 32:24El Chapo escaped through the tunnel
- 32:26while his followers were fighting
- 32:27against the Special Forces he escaped
- 32:30with one of his close assistants when
- 32:32they came out of the tunnel they stole a
- 32:35car that was passing on the street the
- 32:37security forces weren't only surrounding
- 32:39the house they were spread out in the
- 32:42whole area when they received the news
- 32:44of El Chapo's Escape patrols started
- 32:47roaming the area right away
- 32:49about 20 kilometers away from the house
- 32:51at one of the checkpoints four federal
- 32:54police officers managed to arrest El
- 32:57Chapo and his assistant El Chapo right
- 33:00away attempted to bribe them but
- 33:02unfortunately for him they weren't
- 33:03corrupt officers and they refused his
- 33:06bride this prompted him to get angry and
- 33:09start acting insanely he began to insult
- 33:12and threaten them however the officers
- 33:15disregarded his threats took a picture
- 33:17of him and sent it to their commander
- 33:20who told them that special forces were
- 33:22on their way to them and warned them
- 33:24that El Chapo's men and Associates were
- 33:27preparing for an attack by mobilizing
- 33:29all their forces to rescue their leader
- 33:31he also ordered them to take shelter in
- 33:34a nearby motel and get prepared for any
- 33:37sudden potential attack from El Chapo's
- 33:39gang the four officers and El Chapo took
- 33:42one of the motel rooms where they waited
- 33:44and monitored the situation
- 33:46after a short while they began to hear
- 33:49the sounds of cars approaching from a
- 33:51distance as if it were a large
- 33:53procession moving slowly towards them at
- 33:56that moment El Chapo smirk maliciously
- 33:59and said to the police now you probably
- 34:01wish you had accepted my offer however
- 34:04his smile quickly turned into a look of
- 34:07shock and despair as the procession of
- 34:09cars arrived and he realized that those
- 34:12were not his men but a massive number of
- 34:14soldiers from the Army and Special
- 34:16Forces
- 34:17they had surrounded the hotel
- 34:19and quickly secured all entrances and
- 34:21exits El Chapo's men were taken aback
- 34:24they couldn't even contemplate getting
- 34:26closer to the hotel once they saw the
- 34:29heavy presence of security forces in the
- 34:31area
- 34:32El Chapo was arrested for the third time
- 34:34and sent to altaplano prison again
- 34:37the prison from which he escaped the
- 34:39last time
- 34:40but this time El Chapo was under heavy
- 34:43surveillance nevertheless imagine that
- 34:46he began to look for another way out and
- 34:49started to plan for an escape operation
- 34:51he sent messages to his gang asking them
- 34:53to do it again
- 34:55According to some of El Chapo's gang
- 34:57members they had really started working
- 34:59on a new Escape operation and what made
- 35:02it weird was that they were planning to
- 35:04do it the same way
- 35:05the Mexican authorities were already
- 35:07working on his extradition procedures to
- 35:10America they had come to believe that
- 35:12this was the only solution El Chapo
- 35:15escaped from Puente Grande in 2001.
- 35:19had remained a fugitive for 14 years he
- 35:22also escaped through a tunnel beneath
- 35:24the bathtub when they surrounded him in
- 35:26one of his safe houses he also escaped
- 35:29from altaplano prison the most fortified
- 35:32prison in Mexico and escaped for the
- 35:35fourth time through the tunnel behind
- 35:36the mirror in another Safe House
- 35:39how long will they keep chasing him if
- 35:41he stays in Mexico he will surely find a
- 35:44way to escape because all of his men and
- 35:46followers are around him but in the U.S
- 35:49he would no longer be able to do
- 35:51anything
- 35:52for this reason the court was Expediting
- 35:55his extradition procedures imagine that
- 35:58the judge who was working on his
- 35:59extradition file had been assassinated
- 36:01in October 2016. El Chapo's extradition
- 36:04to America had been postponed to a year
- 36:07later but eventually one day in January
- 36:102017 El Chapo was surprised when the
- 36:14guards and soldiers entered his cell tie
- 36:16him up and took him to a helicopter that
- 36:19was in the prison yard he was then taken
- 36:21to a special plane and he hadn't
- 36:24realized what was going on yet the plane
- 36:26landed in New York and El Chapo got off
- 36:29the plane trying to comprehend what was
- 36:32happening he was confused looking around
- 36:35to the right and left
- 36:36El Chapo asked one of the DEA agents
- 36:39where am I
- 36:40the agent replied you are in New York
- 36:44and this is a picture of the most
- 36:46powerful drug gang leader in history
- 36:48with tears in his eyes his a historical
- 36:51scene El Chapo was tried in the U.S
- 36:55trial lasted for a long period during
- 36:57which many details Witnesses and
- 37:00testimonies emerge eventually in 2019 El
- 37:04Chapo was sentenced to life imprisonment
- 37:06plus 30 years currently El Chapo is in a
- 37:10prison named adx or Florence supermax it
- 37:14is a prison located in Colorado USA this
- 37:17prison is considered the most powerful
- 37:19and secure prison in America it houses
- 37:22inmates deemed extremely dangerous even
- 37:24to other prisoners which means that all
- 37:27the inmates are kept in solitary
- 37:29confinement and even their interaction
- 37:31with the guards is limited
- 37:33El Chapo spends 23 hours a day in his
- 37:36cell and he is only allowed to go out
- 37:38for one hour to indoor places in prison
- 37:41under strict and heavy surveillance I am
- 37:43pretty sure that El Chapo considered
- 37:45escaping many times but I strongly
- 37:48believe that he has tears in his eyes
- 37:50when he realizes that he is far away
- 37:52from all his power and influence
- 37:55we have reached the end of our story
