- 1:57the information in the description down
- 1:59below and and let's go ahead and get
- 2:01into today's case so Alison bother was
- 2:03born on the 22nd of September in 1967 in
- 2:07Port Elizabeth two parents Brian and
- 2:09Claire the family split up early on
- 2:11leaving her mother Claire to care for
- 2:14both Alison and her brother Neil who was
- 2:1618 months older than Allison and she had
- 2:18a fairly normal childhood eventually she
- 2:21went on to attend the Collegiate High
- 2:22School for Girls which was also located
- 2:24in Port Elizabeth she wasn't like super
- 2:27academic or like you know she wasn't
- 2:28really that into school
- 2:31um or you know driven to any particular
- 2:33career path but despite this she did
- 2:35serve as the head girl for the school
- 2:37and then once she graduated she
- 2:39underwent secretarial studies for a year
- 2:41before going and traveling around the
- 2:43world for four years she eventually
- 2:46returned to Port Elizabeth and started
- 2:48working as an insurance broker and also
- 2:50just a little side note but Port
- 2:52Elizabeth in 2019 the name was changed
- 2:56to yeah I think I don't act I've like
- 2:59Googled it the pronunciation and I
- 3:01really cannot get I just can't form the
- 3:04word properly I don't know but in 1994
- 3:06when this case occurred it was still
- 3:09called Port Elizabeth and it had a
- 3:11population of about 900 000 it has a lot
- 3:14of great beaches a lot of tourists so
- 3:17it's a really popular holiday
- 3:18destination it was also rated South
- 3:20Africa's most safe City so it's also
- 3:23known as The Friendly City so like I
- 3:25said this case took place in 1994 it
- 3:28happened on the 18th of December in 1994
- 3:30to be exact and Alison bother was 27
- 3:33years old at the time it was a Sunday
- 3:35and Alison had spent the day with her
- 3:37friends at the beach and then after the
- 3:39beach they decided to go back to
- 3:40Alison's apartment to hang out then at
- 3:42around 1am Alison drove her friend Kim
- 3:45home and when she got back to her
- 3:46apartment she realized her typical
- 3:48parking spot had been taken so she went
- 3:50and just parked up the road it was
- 3:52within walking distance of her house but
- 3:54once she parked a man with a knife
- 3:56forced his way into her car and forced
- 3:59her over into the passenger seat he
- 4:01opened the driver's side door and he
- 4:02held a knife to Alison's throat and said
- 4:05move over or I'll kill you the attacker
- 4:07then took control of her car and he told
- 4:09her I don't want to hurt you I just want
- 4:11to use your car for an hour while the
- 4:12man was driving Alison and her kidnapper
- 4:15made a small talk obviously she doesn't
- 4:18want to make small talk but she's just
- 4:20trying to stay alive at this point she
- 4:22tells the man that her name is Susan and
- 4:24that she has a boyfriend waiting at home
- 4:26who will probably start to worry about
- 4:28her soon and her kidnapper tells her
- 4:30that his name is Clinton Alison told
- 4:32Clinton that she wouldn't report him to
- 4:34the police if he would just let her out
- 4:35of the car and he refused he said he
- 4:37wasn't going to hurt her and he took her
- 4:39to a second location where he then
- 4:41picked up an accomplice the two men then
- 4:43took Alison to a secluded location
- 4:46outside or just outside of Port
- 4:48Elizabeth Allison at the time obviously
- 4:50didn't know where this was but it was a
- 4:52place called nordhook I'll put a little
- 4:53map on the screen now just so you can
- 4:55get an idea of how close they were to
- 4:57the city center and I'll also give a
- 4:59trigger warning now if you want to skip
- 5:01over the graphic parts of this case it
- 5:03does involve strong violence and sexual
- 5:05assault it is so incomprehensible And
- 5:09discussing what happened to her but I
- 5:11think it's important to talk about this
- 5:12case and what happened to her and to
- 5:15share her story so the men told Alison
- 5:18that they were going to rape her and
- 5:20they asked if she would resist and you
- 5:22know she was powerless she just wanted
- 5:24to do anything she could to help herself
- 5:26in this situation so she said no that
- 5:29she wouldn't resist they then forced her
- 5:31to remove her clothes and the man who
- 5:34said that his name was Clinton forced
- 5:36her to perform oral sex on him and then
- 5:38he forced the same back on her and then
- 5:41he proceeded to rape her once he was
- 5:43finished he then invited his accomplice
- 5:45to do the same who then also raped
- 5:49Alison with his hands around her throat
- 5:52after which they then suffocated her
- 5:54until she was unconscious they then
- 5:56disemboweled her she was stabbed at
- 5:59least 30 times in her abdomen and her
- 6:02pubic area although this number could be
- 6:05in excess of 37 times miraculously
- 6:08Allison actually survived all of this
- 6:10but the men weren't done with her yet
- 6:12they then slashed her throat 17 times
- 6:15and when they were done one of the men
- 6:17said do you think she's dead to which
- 6:19the other man responded nobody can
- 6:21survive that one of the men who attacked
- 6:23Alison was particularly obsessed with
- 6:26mutilating her reproductive organs so
- 6:29clearly like there was something going
- 6:30on here this guy just had a deep-seated
- 6:33hatred for women so after the attack the
- 6:35two men drove away and as they did they
- 6:38threw Allison's clothes out of the
- 6:39window but what they didn't know at the
- 6:41time is that Alison somehow survived
- 6:44this brutal attack when Alison regained
- 6:47Consciousness she had no idea where she
- 6:50was she was naked lying in sin in the
- 6:53middle of nowhere and despite her
- 6:55injuries and despite everything she had
- 6:57gone through she actually wrote what she
- 6:59believed her attackers names were in the
- 7:02sand so that if she didn't make it these
- 7:05men would hopefully face some sort of
- 7:06consequences and the men's names that
- 7:08she wrote were Franz and tiens and then
- 7:11underneath their names and this is like
- 7:13honestly one of the most heartbreaking
- 7:15things like it actually choked me up
- 7:17when I was looking into this but under
- 7:19their names she wrote in the sand I love
- 7:21you Mum now after writing the men's
- 7:23names in the sand she just kind of laid
- 7:25there for a while because obviously her
- 7:27injuries were so incredibly severe I
- 7:30cannot even
- 7:32comprehend it like I can't even imagine
- 7:34the strength that it took her to then
- 7:36find the will to get up and move despite
- 7:41what she had gone through and despite
- 7:43her injuries and probably the blood loss
- 7:46like everything would have just been in
- 7:48Daze and so confusing I I can't even
- 7:50begin to imagine but after laying there
- 7:53for a while she found the will to get up
- 7:55she saw cars headlights in the distance
- 7:57and she thought if I can just get to
- 7:59that road then I might have a chance of
- 8:01survival initially she tries to crawl to
- 8:04this road or to where the headlights are
- 8:06and she realizes that's not gonna work
- 8:08so she tries to stand up and this is
- 8:10when she realizes just how severe her
- 8:13injuries are because when she stands up
- 8:15her head actually flaws back because she
- 8:18has been nearly decapitated so her head
- 8:21cannot stay upright it's like hanging on
- 8:24by a thread and she has to hold her head
- 8:27on as she walks towards these headlights
- 8:30and not only did she have to hold hold
- 8:32her head with one hand but she could
- 8:34feel her organs coming out of her
- 8:37abdomen so she had this denim shirt and
- 8:39she had to use the other hand to hold
- 8:41this denim shirt against her organs to
- 8:44keep her organs inside her stomach so
- 8:46with one hand she's holding her organs
- 8:48in and with the other hand she's holding
- 8:50her head upright on her head while
- 8:53walking towards these headlights like I
- 8:55actually just kind of fathom it I cannot
- 8:56what's also crazy is that her windpipe
- 8:59had actually been crushed so regularly
- 9:01she wouldn't be able to breathe but the
- 9:04slashes across her throat actually
- 9:06created an opening that allowed her to
- 9:09breathe her vision was also coming in
- 9:10and out at some point she could only see
- 9:12black which only made it more difficult
- 9:14for her to get to the road and it was a
- 9:16really long and painful thing for her to
- 9:19get to this road and when she did get to
- 9:21the road she just collapsed in the
- 9:23middle of it she couldn't make it any
- 9:24further and she just laid there and
- 9:26hoped that somebody would stop and would
- 9:29find her there and help her and it was 2
- 9:31am by this point that she got to the
- 9:33road and thankfully there were still
- 9:35cars driving around one of which kind of
- 9:38started driving up towards her stopped
- 9:40in the middle of the road and at this
- 9:42point she was kind of overthinking
- 9:43everything she was like could this have
- 9:45been a really bad idea could this be the
- 9:47men who kidnapped me but she was willing
- 9:50to take that risk because it was the
- 9:52only chance she really had so this car
- 9:55stopped in front of her a little bit
- 9:56away from her in the middle of the road
- 9:58and nobody got out of the car so she
- 10:00kind of just put her hand up and sort of
- 10:02started waving and then this car just
- 10:05drove off and left her there you know in
- 10:07a way this is kind of a hard sort of
- 10:09situation because obviously this woman
- 10:12is so desperately in need of help but I
- 10:15feel like you would sort of be scared
- 10:17that it's someone setting you up like
- 10:19somebody has just got got fake blood on
- 10:21themselves they're lying in the middle
- 10:22of the road and as soon as you go to
- 10:24help them they like get up and like have
- 10:25a knife or something especially at 2AM
- 10:28in the morning like it's a bit like it's
- 10:30a bit scary but after what she went
- 10:32through I just feel like you would see
- 10:33her and know that this is real like the
- 10:36injuries that she had there's no way
- 10:38someone's faking that to set up a
- 10:40robbery you know but I also don't know
- 10:42what she looked like from the car's
- 10:44perspective like if she's lying down if
- 10:46they can't really see the injuries but
- 10:47the injury seems so bad I feel like they
- 10:49would have been able to see I don't know
- 10:50it's a very conflicting one thankfully
- 10:52though another car wasn't far behind and
- 10:54at 2 45 AM another car pulled up and
- 10:58thank God the guy in this car was a
- 11:00young man named Tian alert and he
- 11:02decided to stop and get out of the car
- 11:05and help Alison and by this point it had
- 11:07been about an hour and a half since she
- 11:10had first been abducted Tian got out of
- 11:12the car to go and help her but she could
- 11:14barely communicate because of her severe
- 11:17injuries she looked terrified and her
- 11:20eyes were bloodshot there were multiple
- 11:22other people in the car with Tien and
- 11:23thankfully one of them had a mobile
- 11:25phone and so they called emergency
- 11:28services to come and help and it's
- 11:30actually pretty lucky that somebody
- 11:31happened to have an mobile phone because
- 11:32this was 1994 like obviously mobile
- 11:35phones were not as common as they are
- 11:37today and what's also lucky is that Tian
- 11:39was a Veterinary student so he had kind
- 11:42of like a basic like medical
- 11:43understanding I guess enough so that he
- 11:46was able to help put Alison's thyroid
- 11:48back inside her body and then kind of
- 11:51take care of her until Emergency
- 11:52Services arrived and he was providing
- 11:55her with emotional and medical support
- 11:58until they did get there so he was
- 12:00trying to keep her awake with small talk
- 12:02even though she couldn't talk she
- 12:03couldn't respond she could squeeze his
- 12:06hand once for yes and twice for no and
- 12:09thank God he was there to do this thank
- 12:10God he was there to like keep her awake
- 12:12and keep her responding through these
- 12:14hand squeezes because Emergency Services
- 12:16it took them so long to come it took
- 12:19four phone calls and one hour and 45
- 12:22minutes until they came out and took
- 12:25Alison to the hospital and then on the
- 12:27way to the hospital apparently they were
- 12:29just like driving really slowly and Tian
- 12:31said them like can you guys go a bit
- 12:33faster like she is dying back there and
- 12:36they refused apparently there was just
- 12:38no sense of urgency I don't know if it's
- 12:40because they thought you know her
- 12:42injuries are so bad she's probably
- 12:43unable to be saved or what but there was
- 12:45just no sense of urgency like they just
- 12:48didn't care they were driving so slowly
- 12:50they took an hour and 45 minutes to come
- 12:52out there four phone calls before they
- 12:55came like it's just so unacceptable like
- 12:57Alison was literally Hanging On by a
- 13:00thread every second counts eventually
- 13:03they did get to the hospital like by the
- 13:06grace of God and one of the doctors who
- 13:08treated Alison he said that Allison's
- 13:11injuries were the most severe he had
- 13:14ever seen in his 16 years of practice
- 13:17when he and his colleagues were
- 13:20assessing her they realized she had been
- 13:22completely disemboweled there were Loops
- 13:24of her small intestines sitting on top
- 13:26of her stomach her abdomen had been
- 13:28completely contaminated with beach sand
- 13:30and charcoal and after inspecting her
- 13:32injuries further they realized that she
- 13:35would likely never be able to carry a
- 13:37child either the general surgeon who was
- 13:39called in to operate on Alison his name
- 13:41was Dr Dimitri Angelov and he was
- 13:44shocked by her injuries as well he said
- 13:46they gave a striking impression of
- 13:48Cruelty and you know doctors surgeons
- 13:50nurses I feel like they can be a little
- 13:53bit desensitized to injuries and that
- 13:55sort of thing because they see them all
- 13:56the time so when they are like genuinely
- 13:58shocked by injuries you know it's really
- 14:00bad I mean when she first arrived at the
- 14:03hospital I don't think anybody thought
- 14:05that she was going to be able to survive
- 14:07her injuries and they were completely
- 14:09shocked that she had even made it this
- 14:11far and despite the unlikelihood that
- 14:13she would make it the medical team did
- 14:16absolutely everything they could to save
- 14:18her as I mentioned Tian had actually
- 14:20pushed her thyroid back inside her body
- 14:22and as it turns out her thyroid had
- 14:25actually been cut in half which is like
- 14:27potentially fatal not potentially fatal
- 14:29it should be fatal because a small
- 14:31puncture or small cut is potentially
- 14:33fatal so it really goes to show you just
- 14:35how strong she is that she's been able
- 14:37to make it this far her intestines had
- 14:39been ruptured and punctured in several
- 14:42places and you know there were all of
- 14:44these stub wounds which somehow managed
- 14:46to miss all of her vital organs they
- 14:49began operating on Allison as soon as
- 14:51they possibly could and as they did so
- 14:53they had to meticulously clean every
- 14:55single one of her organs of the sand and
- 14:58the charcoal that was all in there and
- 15:01they had to do this before putting each
- 15:03of her organs back in place so this
- 15:05surgery lasted three hours miraculously
- 15:08Allison survived Dr Angelov puts her
- 15:11survival down to being a miracle but I
- 15:13do think that her surgeons and her
- 15:15doctors and her nurses really deserved
- 15:17the utmost respect for doing everything
- 15:20they could to save her I mean I do
- 15:23understand why they called it a miracle
- 15:25because I think you know despite the
- 15:27fact that they did everything they could
- 15:28it's a miracle that she even made it to
- 15:31the hospital alive despite her throat
- 15:33being slit 17 times and nearly
- 15:36decapitating her none of the major blood
- 15:38vessels or nerves in her neck were
- 15:41severed or damaged the stab wounds
- 15:44around her abdomen somehow didn't get
- 15:47any of her vital organs when the blade
- 15:49went through and it's also incredibly
- 15:51lucky that Alison didn't suffer any
- 15:54infections after the surgery as well but
- 15:56she wasn't completely out of the woods
- 15:58yet she was still you know practically
- 16:00on the brink of death despite all of
- 16:02this despite trying to recover in
- 16:04everything that she had gone through
- 16:05though she surprisingly remembered a lot
- 16:08of details from the attack and about her
- 16:11attackers which really helped police to
- 16:14track down her perpetrators not even 12
- 16:16hours after her attack she was awake in
- 16:19the hospital and able to talk to police
- 16:21and assist them with their investigation
- 16:23police were able to show her multiple
- 16:26photos of different potential suspects
- 16:28and she was able to point two of these
- 16:31photos out and say these were the two
- 16:33men that attacked me one of them was a
- 16:35man named Franz Detroit and the other
- 16:38one was a man named tian's Kruger and
- 16:40Alison was actually able to write the
- 16:43first names of these men on each of
- 16:45their corresponding photos both of these
- 16:47men were already known to police both
- 16:49had previously been arrested for rape
- 16:52France had actually been arrested for
- 16:55the rape of two women and tians had been
- 16:58arrested for the rape of one woman and
- 17:00they were both awaiting their trials and
- 17:01somehow while awaiting their trials for
- 17:03rape they were just like allowed out
- 17:06they were just like out
- 17:08raping another woman almost killing a
- 17:12woman while they awaited their trial I
- 17:14just do not understand I just don't know
- 17:16how that was allowed to happen and
- 17:18what's crazy is they didn't even have to
- 17:20pay bail they were just allowed out on
- 17:22their own recognizes while they waited
- 17:24for their trial for their rape trials I
- 17:28don't know it's just so mind-blowing to
- 17:29me because obviously they're just you
- 17:31know if they did rape these women then
- 17:33they're just free to go and do it again
- 17:36while they wait to be convicted of it I
- 17:39don't know like what is that how can you
- 17:41be suspected of two different rapes and
- 17:43you're just
- 17:46I actually have no words so how I get
- 17:49that at the time it's just alleged like
- 17:51they haven't been convicted of anything
- 17:52but when it's something as severe as
- 17:55rape and you're going to trial for it I
- 17:58just feel like you need to be held I'm
- 18:00like at a loss for words about this it's
- 18:02just so crazy to me the police's excuse
- 18:04for why France was allowed out was
- 18:07because apparently there was no evidence
- 18:09of the rape because the Survivor
- 18:11reported it a week after it happened and
- 18:13they also said he had a stable
- 18:14employment and a permanent address which
- 18:16I guess to them was a sign that he
- 18:19wasn't gonna flee or commit another rape
- 18:22somehow because he has a job and then
- 18:25obviously he was being accused of two
- 18:27different rapes and the second rape the
- 18:30reason they didn't hold him is because
- 18:33there was no investigating officer so
- 18:35when he and tions were brought in for
- 18:37this second rape they didn't know that
- 18:40France had previously
- 18:42been accused of another rape I don't
- 18:45know why they weren't detained for this
- 18:47second rape like even if they didn't
- 18:48know about the first one I don't know
- 18:50why they weren't attained for the second
- 18:52one at all they were both just like
- 18:54allowed to go out after doing it oh you
- 18:56guys were accused of rape no worries you
- 18:57go out do it again have fun now this
- 19:00part I thought was a little strange as
- 19:01well
- 19:02um even after Alison had identified the
- 19:06men and like you know identified their
- 19:08photos written their names on the back
- 19:10of their photos for identification they
- 19:13said that it would make the prosecution
- 19:15against them stronger if she could
- 19:17verbally identify them which you know
- 19:20for obvious reasons was going to be
- 19:21difficult she was almost decapitated she
- 19:24had a ventilation tube providing oxygen
- 19:27to her lungs so she couldn't talk the
- 19:30doctors also didn't want to remove these
- 19:32tubes so soon after surgery because they
- 19:35didn't want to damage her throat anymore
- 19:36but because you know officers were kind
- 19:39of insisting that this would make the
- 19:41prosecution stronger the doctors
- 19:43presented the idea to Alison and she
- 19:46said you know if we have to do it let's
- 19:48do it so doctors removed her ventilation
- 19:51tube from her throat and she was able to
- 19:53say my attackers were France and tions
- 19:56France and tians were arrested on the
- 19:5819th of December at approximately 5 a.m
- 20:01they were charged with an array of
- 20:02offenses including kidnapping rape and
- 20:05the attempted murder of Alison and the
- 20:08media labeled them the nordhook Ripper
- 20:10rapist one of the police officers who
- 20:13interviewed Franz initially said that
- 20:15France was confused when he was told he
- 20:17was being charged with attempted murder
- 20:19the officer explained that Alison had
- 20:21survived the attack and this is when
- 20:23France basically said well then there's
- 20:25nothing I can hide from you because she
- 20:27will obviously tell you everything that
- 20:28happened he then pulled a bloodstained
- 20:30ring from his pocket handed it to the
- 20:33officer and said this belonged to Alison
- 20:34obviously they wanted to test on this
- 20:36ring and confirmed that the blood on the
- 20:39ring did belong to Alison he also
- 20:41allegedly can confessed to raping a
- 20:44pregnant woman two weeks earlier and
- 20:46handed over a knife to the police that
- 20:48he had used in this attack so obviously
- 20:51this guy is just a literal scum of the
- 20:54earth I'm just gonna give a little bit
- 20:55of background information on him France
- 20:58and tians the two rapists who attempted
- 21:01to murder Alison like I said before even
- 21:04prior to this incident these guys were
- 21:06already on the police's radar for just
- 21:08being some of the most despicable humans
- 21:10to ever walk the planet I'm so glad that
- 21:13they were eventually caught but it's
- 21:14just so frustrating that's not even the
- 21:17right word like it's not even enough of
- 21:19a word to describe what it is but it's
- 21:21so frustrating what had to happen for
- 21:24them to be caught and how many women had
- 21:26to go through such heartbreaking things
- 21:28before these men were chords it was
- 21:30honestly really hard to research this
- 21:31case and look into this case because of
- 21:33how traumatic what these women had to go
- 21:35through is like the recounts of what
- 21:38they had to go through is devastating
- 21:40the first woman that Franz rape was a 20
- 21:43year old student and she's the one that
- 21:45took a week to come forward and the
- 21:47reason she took a week to come forward
- 21:49is because Franz threatened to kill her
- 21:51if she did speak up about what happened
- 21:53the second woman was a 21 year old
- 21:55pregnant woman and she came forward
- 21:57almost immediately despite the fact that
- 22:00France also threatened to kill her if
- 22:02she came forward as we know though while
- 22:04they were awaiting trial they were both
- 22:07let out no bail nothing so in 1994 when
- 22:11the attack against Allison happened
- 22:13France de trois was 26 years old he was
- 22:16the son of a police officer and he was
- 22:18raised in a Christian household he was
- 22:21expelled from eighth grade for setting a
- 22:23fire to a dormitory which encouraged his
- 22:25parents to move to the nearby town of
- 22:27Adelaide it was around this time that he
- 22:30supposedly became involved in Satanism
- 22:32something which actually turned out to
- 22:34be a major talking point of this case
- 22:36which I will touch on later Franz was a
- 22:38terrible student he failed 9th grade
- 22:40twice and I think failing 9th grade
- 22:42twice was the last straw for his parents
- 22:45because they sent him to the Army after
- 22:47this when he eventually left the Army
- 22:49his parents helped him get a job at a
- 22:51mine and welcome in the Free State and
- 22:54during this time here he married a woman
- 22:57and fathered a daughter although France
- 22:59later abandoned his family because his
- 23:01wife apparently didn't satisfy him
- 23:04sexually after abandoning his family he
- 23:06moved to Port Elizabeth where his
- 23:07parents helped him get another job as a
- 23:10driver for a chain of stationary shops
- 23:12he was eventually fired from this job as
- 23:14his employer found out that he had
- 23:16stolen money and for this he received a
- 23:19suspended sentence of three years after
- 23:21losing his job friends opened something
- 23:23called a shabeen which is like an
- 23:26illegal alcohol store and this is where
- 23:28he actually met tians who was a customer
- 23:31and they first came into contact about
- 23:34four months before the rape took place
- 23:37Franz went on to marry another woman who
- 23:40he fathered a son with this was his
- 23:42second child wild obviously but from
- 23:44what I understand this was the only
- 23:46child that lived with him at the time of
- 23:48Allison's attack because you know like I
- 23:50said he abandoned his other family
- 23:52tian's Kruger was only 19 years old when
- 23:55he and France raped Allison in 1994. his
- 23:58father had abandoned him and his mother
- 24:01shortly after his mother fell pregnant
- 24:03with him eventually she remarried but
- 24:05this was once again short-lived
- 24:08eventually another man came into the
- 24:09picture and the family moved to sitsi
- 24:12Karma which is on the south eastern
- 24:14coast of South Africa I did read reports
- 24:17online that this new stepfather may have
- 24:19been violent toward towns but I couldn't
- 24:21find a whole lot to back this claim up
- 24:24so take it with a grain of salt tian's
- 24:26allegedly did have quite a rough
- 24:28childhood though he was bullied for
- 24:30having a third nipple and called Drew
- 24:32tiet which translates to three-tit and
- 24:36all of this pushed tians down a path of
- 24:39depression and he eventually turned to
- 24:41drugs and alcohol he left school in the
- 24:4410th grade and joined the army similar
- 24:46to you know our friend France and he
- 24:49also allegedly had some ties to Satanism
- 24:52but I couldn't find a lot of information
- 24:54about his involvement with that the
- 24:56morning after they raped and attempted
- 24:57to kill Alison as well allegedly they
- 25:00just had breakfast like normal and had
- 25:02the bloody knife that they had used to
- 25:04Slit her throat and disembowel her just
- 25:07sitting on the table while they ate
- 25:09breakfast together I just feel goes to
- 25:11show like how little remorse they had
- 25:13and by little remorse I mean no remorse
- 25:16they had no remorse for their actions on
- 25:20the 29th of December Franz and tians
- 25:23appear before the Magistrate's court and
- 25:25they were ordered to undergo 30 days of
- 25:27psychiatric evaluation and during that
- 25:30time they were held at polesmore prison
- 25:32the two of them both indicated that they
- 25:34were going to plead guilty but the
- 25:36police continued their investigation
- 25:37collected DNA from both men and analyzed
- 25:40and examined the crime scene just in
- 25:43case you know they could always change
- 25:45their minds and decide to plead not
- 25:46guilty so it's important to have all of
- 25:49the information at hand while all of
- 25:50this was going on Alison was still
- 25:52recovering she wasn't out of the
- 25:53woodwork yet and still had to undergo
- 25:55more surgeries she was discharged from
- 25:57the hospital just before the new year
- 25:59but she still had to go back to hospital
- 26:01every single day to have her wounds
- 26:03treated she still had some horrendous
- 26:05injuries and a long road to recovery the
- 26:08worst of her injuries was probably the
- 26:10abdomen she had to go in every day to
- 26:12have the wounds scraped until they bled
- 26:15so that new cells could grow she also
- 26:17had to undergo plastic surgery and to
- 26:19this day she still lives with pain and
- 26:22ongoing medical complications as a
- 26:24result of her injuries but she is alive
- 26:27you know against every odd she survived
- 26:31on the 23rd of March Franz and tians had
- 26:34their pre-trial hearing they were going
- 26:36up against eight charges multiple counts
- 26:38of abduction in decent assault and rape
- 26:40they were also being charged with one
- 26:42count of attempted murder I'm one count
- 26:44of robbery and they pled guilty to all
- 26:46eight charges France however pled not
- 26:49guilty to the charge for his first rape
- 26:52that he committed nobody knows why he
- 26:54pled not guilty but it's assumed that
- 26:56it's because there was a lack of
- 26:58physical evidence because she came
- 27:00forward a week after the incident
- 27:01happened so he just assumed due to the
- 27:04lack of physical evidence he could just
- 27:05kind of take a chance and plead not
- 27:07guilty on that one on the 12th of June
- 27:09in 1995 the trial started and it seemed
- 27:13to be the only thing the media were
- 27:15talking about and it was still and still
- 27:17is one of the most high profile cases in
- 27:20the history of South Africa in
- 27:22preparation for the trial Alison went to
- 27:24see a clinical psychologist who assess
- 27:26her emotional state and part of what was
- 27:28documented by the psychologist was that
- 27:30Alison did not express the typical
- 27:32feelings of a rape Survivor such as fear
- 27:34anger shame helplessness and
- 27:37disintegration she appeared to be quite
- 27:39composed after the attack and this was
- 27:41due to her hardened personality style
- 27:44and obviously it's hard to classify
- 27:46somebody's response to a rape everybody
- 27:49is different everybody responds in
- 27:51different ways and I'm by no means a
- 27:53psychologist so I don't really fully
- 27:55grasp this analysis but apparently
- 27:58there's like three main types of
- 28:01responses there's an expressed response
- 28:03a controlled response and a shocked
- 28:06response so an expressed response would
- 28:08be somebody expressing you know
- 28:10hysterically or very agitated about the
- 28:14attack and then there's the controlled
- 28:16response which is where somebody is kind
- 28:18of they don't really show any emotion
- 28:20about it and then the shocked response
- 28:22is typically when someone shows
- 28:24disorientation about what happened to
- 28:27them so this can present itself in like
- 28:29confusion or not really remembering a
- 28:31lot of details and the findings of
- 28:34Allison's psychological evaluation is
- 28:37that she was most likely showing a
- 28:40shocked response and she was in a pro
- 28:42long State of Shock now at the time that
- 28:45this case took place in South Africa
- 28:47they actually had a law there where the
- 28:49victim would have to put their hand on
- 28:52the perpetrator or the attacker's
- 28:53shoulder and get a photo like that to
- 28:55kind of prove that the victim was
- 28:58pointing out the perpetrator as the
- 29:00perpetrator I guess which I mean is kind
- 29:02of ridiculous because in Alison's case
- 29:04she's already pointed him out or pointed
- 29:06them out in two different ways she wrote
- 29:08their names on the back of photos and
- 29:10then she also like said it out loud and
- 29:13I can only imagine how traumatic it
- 29:15would be for victims to have to go and
- 29:17touch their attacker and take a photo
- 29:19with their attacker it just you know
- 29:22does not seem necessary especially after
- 29:24going through something so incredibly
- 29:26traumatic so thankfully in this case
- 29:28actually they came up with this idea for
- 29:32a different way for Alison to identify
- 29:34them a third time I don't even know why
- 29:36this was necessary she's already
- 29:37identified them a bunch but the third
- 29:39time she identified them in instead
- 29:42instead of taking a photo with her
- 29:44placing her hand on their shoulder she
- 29:46was able to identify them through a
- 29:48one-way glass and this is now actually
- 29:51the common practice in South Africa so
- 29:54no more of that having to touch and take
- 29:56a photo with your perpetrator thankfully
- 29:58on the very first day of the trial Franz
- 30:01and tian's attorney a guy named Henry
- 30:03lerm actually said that he could no
- 30:05longer represent the men citing ethical
- 30:09reasons the first witness that was heard
- 30:11from in the trial was the first woman
- 30:13that Franz raped alone the 20 year old
- 30:15student and he would actually be
- 30:17convicted on four charges two counts of
- 30:20rape one count of indecent assault and
- 30:22one count of abduction although this
- 30:26kind of would all be tallied on to his
- 30:28sentence later on the second day of the
- 30:30trial they also had the 21 year old
- 30:33pregnant woman Testify the one who both
- 30:35Franz and tians raped and then on the
- 30:38third day of the trial it was Alison's
- 30:40time to testify during the trial there
- 30:42was also so testimony from Tian who if
- 30:44you remember is the man who pulled over
- 30:46and got out of his car and actually
- 30:48helped Alison and he was a vet at the
- 30:51time but I think now or at the time of
- 30:53the trial he was working towards
- 30:55becoming or was a human doctor there was
- 30:59also a fourth woman who gave testimony
- 31:01that she was almost a victim of Franz
- 31:03and tian's the night before Alison was
- 31:06raped and almost murdered she said that
- 31:09she noticed the two men watching her
- 31:11while she was driving up the street
- 31:12trying to find a park but she just kind
- 31:14of parked anyway and then once she did
- 31:16Park Franz came up to her front door and
- 31:19tried to force his way in but she
- 31:22thankfully locked the door they couldn't
- 31:24get in and then they just kind of ended
- 31:25up walking away tions didn't give
- 31:27testimony at the trial I'm not sure why
- 31:29I guess he was just ready to face
- 31:31whatever was coming he'd already made
- 31:33his plead pled guilty and I think he
- 31:35probably just knew there was no getting
- 31:37out of it no matter what he said France
- 31:39however did testify at the trial and he
- 31:42basically admitted to being a Satanist
- 31:44he said that it was a demon called
- 31:46Incubus who told him to rape all of the
- 31:49women and try to murder Alison and it
- 31:52honestly came off a bit like he was
- 31:54trying to I don't know take a little bit
- 31:56of the blame off himself he was trying
- 31:58to reduce his culpability and it's how
- 32:00he was like trying to justify his crimes
- 32:02you know like it was the devil the devil
- 32:04made me do it it wasn't me while he was
- 32:06being detained before the trial he
- 32:08allegedly asked the officers to have
- 32:11like a pastor come and give him an
- 32:13exorcism and this was granted so a
- 32:16passer came gave him an exorcism and
- 32:19according to one of the officers there
- 32:20he kept referencing two demons one
- 32:23called Incubus and one called succubus
- 32:25and according to this officer he kept
- 32:28getting the two demons confused so kind
- 32:32of embarrassing not a very good actor
- 32:34like at least have your details straight
- 32:35but it also just kind of proved that all
- 32:38of this was just kind of a game to him
- 32:40like he couldn't even get the two Devils
- 32:41right he was obviously just putting on
- 32:43this whole Act and the media really
- 32:45latched on to this whole Satanism angle
- 32:48and probably really fueled the notoriety
- 32:51of these two men now something
- 32:53surprising about his testimony as well
- 32:55is that he apparently downplayed tian's
- 32:58involvement quite a lot and said that
- 33:01tions was like very shocked when France
- 33:04strangled Alison and he even went as far
- 33:07as to say that when he got in the car he
- 33:11actually just thought that Alison was a
- 33:13friend of France's like he didn't know
- 33:15that they were going to go and rape this
- 33:16woman and that all of this was going to
- 33:18happen during his testimony he also
- 33:20gained detailed accounts of each rape
- 33:22that he committed I think by this point
- 33:25he had already been found guilty of the
- 33:27first woman's rape despite pleading not
- 33:29guilty but he hadn't been sentenced for
- 33:31this like it was all kind of gonna get
- 33:33grouped together at the end once the
- 33:35full trial was over he gave this like
- 33:37really half-assed apology at the end
- 33:39which was almost like a joke it was like
- 33:41I don't know how ever be able to forgive
- 33:43myself again sort of thing by the end of
- 33:45the trial both men were found guilty on
- 33:47all eight charges and then Franz was
- 33:50found guilty on an extra four charges
- 33:52for the initial rape that he committed
- 33:55of the 20 year old student by himself
- 33:57this included two counts of rape one
- 33:59count of indecent and sold and one count
- 34:02of abduction and then on the 7th of
- 34:04August in 1995 which is actually just
- 34:07two months after South Africa abolished
- 34:10the death penalty they abolished death
- 34:12penalty on like the 6th of June 1995
- 34:14which honestly I guess is kind of lucky
- 34:17because I don't believe in the death
- 34:18penalty because I think people who
- 34:19deserve the death penalty actually
- 34:21deserve to rot in prison like it's
- 34:23almost an easy way out to just be
- 34:25sentenced to death so in my opinion it
- 34:28was kind of a good thing that it was
- 34:29abolished two months before they but
- 34:31anyway on the 7th of August 1995 Franz
- 34:34de trois was sentenced to three life
- 34:37sentences without the possibility of
- 34:39parole and tian's Kruger was sentenced
- 34:42to one life sentence and 25 years with
- 34:45no parole so France was given a life
- 34:48sentence for each of the women he raped
- 34:50and tianz was given a life sentence only
- 34:52for Alison and then 25 years for the
- 34:55pregnant 21 year old that he raped with
- 34:58France what's crazy as well is that if
- 35:00they were sentenced two months prior
- 35:02they likely would have gotten the death
- 35:04penalty judge Jansen the judge on the
- 35:06case said that if it was considered
- 35:08constitutional then he would have
- 35:10considered it and probably would have
- 35:11imposed it so after sentencing Franz is
- 35:15being held at the Groot VL prison and
- 35:18tions is being held at the Pretoria
- 35:21Central Prison in the cmax section in
- 35:24June of 2011 legislation came into
- 35:26effect in South Africa where anybody who
- 35:30had been sentenced to a lifelong
- 35:32sentence in prison and had already
- 35:34served 13 years and four months by this
- 35:36point would be eligible for parole which
- 35:38meant that France and tians would be
- 35:41eligible for parole which obviously is
- 35:44something that was heavily heavily
- 35:46opposed by Alison and the general public
- 35:49like these guys are a danger to society
- 35:52they should never be allowed out of
- 35:54prison they should never be allowed to
- 35:55walk free amongst other people in my
- 35:57opinion there was actually a petition
- 35:59that was created to make sure that they
- 36:02don't get parole that they stay behind
- 36:03bars and to my knowledge they haven't
- 36:06been granted Pearl and they are still
- 36:07behind bars to this day at this time
- 36:09Franz was being talked about in the
- 36:11media for another reason there were
- 36:13allegations that he was apparently
- 36:14having an online relationship with an
- 36:17American woman named Sabrina and Sabrina
- 36:20ended up coming out after their
- 36:22relationship ended and said that she was
- 36:24scared for her life and she also claimed
- 36:26that France was involved in criminal
- 36:28activities even while still in prison
- 36:31which I think is crazy because who the
- 36:33hell would want to work with this guy
- 36:35franza's father who was a police officer
- 36:37actually ended up ending his own life
- 36:39because he couldn't deal with the shame
- 36:41of knowing what his son had done now
- 36:44since all of this has happened and since
- 36:47recovering from her attack Alison has
- 36:50made it her mission to share her story
- 36:52around the world and is a successful
- 36:55motivational speaker what started out as
- 36:57something to help combat her depression
- 36:59turned out to be something she was
- 37:01deeply passionate about and has resulted
- 37:03in the release of both a book and a
- 37:05documentary Alison also won the rotary
- 37:08and Paul Harris award for courage beyond
- 37:10the norm in 1995 for becoming the first
- 37:13South African woman to speak publicly
- 37:15about the experience of rape that same
- 37:17year she also received the feminine
- 37:19Magazine's woman of Courage award and
- 37:21was announced Port Elizabeth citizen of
- 37:23the year and honestly I think this is
- 37:25maybe one of the only good things that
- 37:27came out of this case because it really
- 37:29put a spotlight on how many rape cases
- 37:32gets swept under the rug all around the
- 37:34world and particularly in South Africa
- 37:36Alison really took a stand and she held
- 37:40her attackers responsible for for what
- 37:42they did to her and it's incredible that
- 37:45she was able to survive such a brutal
- 37:48and traumatizing ordeal in 1997 she also
- 37:52got married to a man named Tierney and
- 37:54then five years later in 2003 she gave
- 37:56birth to her first child a son named
- 37:58Daniel and then in 2006 she gave birth
- 38:01to her second child a son named Matthew
- 38:03Tian the man who stopped to help Alison
- 38:06on the road actually ended up you know
- 38:09he was a vet at the time he ended up
- 38:11becoming a doctor like for humans not
- 38:14for animals and he actually ended up
- 38:16being the assisting doctor for the birth
- 38:19of Allison's Second Son Alison talked
- 38:21about in her book and her documentary
- 38:23about how as soon as the second man got
- 38:25in the car she knew it was over for her
- 38:27she didn't think that she would be going
- 38:28home that night she also spoke about how
- 38:31after the rape and throughout most of
- 38:33the attack and after the attack she
- 38:35really couldn't feel anything like she
- 38:36couldn't even feel pain and that's
- 38:38obviously probably due to the shock that
- 38:40she was feeling she also talked about
- 38:42how while she was like lying in the sand
- 38:44when part severed like after they had
- 38:46just left her for dead she actually like
- 38:48left her body and it's almost like she
- 38:51was so close to death that she
- 38:53experienced death but she was able to
- 38:55bring herself back almost she was able
- 38:57to pull herself together and find that
- 38:59will to live I mean honestly this is
- 39:01just one of the most unbelievable and
- 39:03insane cases I have ever heard of
- 39:05thinking about her holding her head on
- 39:08and holding her organs inside her body
- 39:11while walking to that road it's truly
- 39:14truly unfathomable and no matter how
- 39:17many cases I cover I am still astounded
- 39:19every single time by the disgusting
- 39:23sub-humans that walk this Earth and what
- 39:26they're capable of it honestly makes me
- 39:27sick to my stomach and you know Alison
- 39:30was one of the lucky ones would you
- 39:33believe like she was she survived and
- 39:36when I say lucky obviously she's not
- 39:37lucky that this happened to her but
- 39:39she's lucky that she survived such an
- 39:41deal and she's still here to share her
- 39:44story and share her strength and her
- 39:46courage where so many women are not and
- 39:49while it's not a happy story it's an
- 39:50incredible Story of Survival and
- 39:53strength and it really speaks to how
- 39:56your courage and your mental strength
- 39:58can help you through the most difficult
- 40:00situations but that is it that's
- 40:02everything for me today that's all for
- 40:04this video I would love to discuss your
- 40:06thoughts in the comments down below
- 40:08because although it's a really hard
- 40:09story to talk about I think it's a
- 40:11really important conversation to have so
- 40:13I'd love to hear your thoughts and your
- 40:15opinions I'll be reading all of the
- 40:16comments as always but that's everything
- 40:18that's all for this video I hope you
- 40:20guys enjoy the rest of your day the rest
