The Ultimate Guide for CRT Gaming on a Modern PC — Transcript

- 0:00in my recent video that's titled the
- 0:02real reason why CR2 monitors are better
- 0:04I said I would do a followup showing
- 0:06people how to actually get a CRT to work
- 0:08on the modern PC but I feel the need to
- 0:11also explain how one can acquire a CRT
- 0:14monitor for those that haven't already
- 0:15and there's a reason for that thanks to
- 0:18certain videos on YouTube Some people
- 0:20may be led to believe that getting back
- 0:22into CRTs can be difficult and an
- 0:25expensive Endeavor well like with PC
- 0:28gaming in general it can get very
- 0:30expensive the more high-end the product
- 0:32is but common CRT models from the 2000s
- 0:35like the 17in dell and Samson SN master
- 0:38I use today offer quality that is
- 0:40acceptably close enough to something
- 0:42like the now highly coveted view Sonic
- 0:44eer and I can say that with some
- 0:46Authority because I also own an eer well
- 0:50not anymore I don't want to talk about
- 0:53it but in a way I actually prefer these
- 0:56two monitors they come in Black which
- 0:58looks way better than than the beige set
- 1:00when sitting next to a modern LCD they
- 1:03also aren't as bulky as the vew Sonic
- 1:05both in the rear and the front with
- 1:07slightly thin the bezels and still at a
- 1:10very affordable price even now but not
- 1:12everyone believes this in my last video
- 1:15there was a comment that mentioned that
- 1:16CRTs are no longer
- 1:19affordable I I mean yeah if you take the
- 1:22lazy route and just go on eBay and
- 1:24search CRT monitor but guys there used
- 1:27to be as many CRT monitors in prac Al
- 1:30every household as they are dishwashers
- 1:32just get up off your lazy butt and put
- 1:34in a little more effort go down to a
- 1:36pawn shop visit the garage sale E-Waste
- 1:39facilities or stop by your grandma's and
- 1:42inquire whatever happened to that PC she
- 1:44used to have 15 years ago odds are she
- 1:46still has it in the Attic or something
- 1:49there has to be a CT somewhere in your
- 1:51town that is in decent working condition
- 1:54it doesn't cost a noral leg unless you
- 1:56live in the middle of nowhere or a
- 1:58snobby wealthy town with citizens that
- 2:00would Hur at the mere sight of a '90s
- 2:02Ford Focus which I guess if you lived in
- 2:05a posh place like that then price
- 2:07probably isn't really an issue but as
- 2:09for the rest of us yes CRTs will become
- 2:12harder to find for a decent price in the
- 2:15years to come but at the time of this
- 2:17recording it's actually usually the
- 2:19collectible monitors like the vew sonics
- 2:21and the trinitrons that can cost a lot
- 2:24but a basic Samsung Dell LG it's not too
- 2:28late there is always an unwanted CRT
- 2:31somewhere nearby that people want to get
- 2:33rid of but haven't gotten around to
- 2:35doing it for whatever reason I mean
- 2:37throwing away CRTs are actually a bit
- 2:39harder than just chucking them in the
- 2:41nearby dumpster and yeah some people do
- 2:43just do that but they shouldn't that's
- 2:45E-Waste that's really bad so my Samsung
- 2:48sync Master which is not yet a premium
- 2:51display in the Retro Gaming market cost
- 2:53me about $40 granted this was maybe 2
- 2:56years ago or something like that my Dell
- 2:58which is only slightly less capable to
- 3:01the sync master came to 0 because I got
- 3:04it from an aunt that was relieved but
- 3:06also confused when I asked her if I
- 3:08could have it and I get why she didn't
- 3:11understand why I was so giddy as I
- 3:13carried what was to her this big paper
- 3:16weight to my car CRTs can be invasive in
- 3:19their very nature especially when space
- 3:21is limited but they don't have to be and
- 3:24that's because they do not replace a
- 3:26Modern Display especially for
- 3:28productivity use cases this is why I
- 3:30recommend that you have a setup that
- 3:33utilizes both a Modern Display and a CRT
- 3:37CRTs are better than modern displays at
- 3:40one thing only and that is gaming this
- 3:42means the display doesn't need to be as
- 3:45big since you don't need to have as much
- 3:47screen real estate for showing Danse
- 3:49small text in websites or spreadsheets
- 3:51or clusters of multitasking apps but for
- 3:54just video games a 17 in is perfectly
- 3:57fine however if you feel you can afford
- 3:59to use some something bigger like 19 in
- 4:01or more then go for it but a 17in CRT is
- 4:05sometimes old people can deal with but
- 4:07still the strength of CRT Still Remains
- 4:10even in these more restrictive
- 4:12scenarios okay let's stop wasting time
- 4:15getting a CRT to run on a PC that has a
- 4:18graphics card older than a decade or so
- 4:20was really easy since a lot of them had
- 4:22analog capable ports either they used
- 4:25VGA which is usually the only connector
- 4:28CRT monitor has or DVI so you'll need to
- 4:31get your hands on a DVI to VGA converter
- 4:34but since the dvi's analog signal is the
- 4:36same as a VGA this adapter is usually
- 4:39small simple and cheap without
- 4:41compromising on image quality since no
- 4:43signal conversion is taking place but be
- 4:45careful make sure your graphics card's
- 4:48DVI port has the right pins for an
- 4:50analog signal since DVI can sometimes
- 4:53only do digital and this is the issue
- 4:56with modern graphics cards which don't
- 4:58have any capability of sending sending
- 4:59out an analog signal even if it has a
- 5:02DVI port so we'll need a sort of digital
- 5:05to analog converter or DAC of some kind
- 5:08now fortunately VJ is a standard that
- 5:10doesn't seem to want to die because of
- 5:12how common it is and I have some good
- 5:14news unlike an episode of My Life in
- 5:16gaming or retro RGB converting a digital
- 5:20signal from something like an HDMI to
- 5:21VGA is very inexpensive simple HDMI to
- 5:25VGA Dongo is all you need in fact I have
- 5:27three different variants all three of
- 5:29them work the same now if you're like me
- 5:32that uses a graphics card that only has
- 5:34one HDMI port and let's say your main
- 5:37LCD or OLED displays plugged into that
- 5:40HDMI port that usually is not a problem
- 5:43you can get a display port to HDMI
- 5:45converter for either your main display
- 5:48or for your CRT and don't worry about
- 5:50having two video conversion adapters
- 5:52between your PC and your CR2 monitor it
- 5:55won't add any additional lag or
- 5:57compatibility issues since no real
- 6:00processing is taking place in this
- 6:02adapter because of just how
- 6:03sophisticated display port is which is
- 6:06able to detect and adapt to the HDMI
- 6:09protocol and as far as I know all modern
- 6:12cards can do that so you'll only need an
- 6:15inexpensive passive display port to HDMI
- 6:18converter like a dongle or even just a
- 6:20plain old display port to HDMI cable
- 6:23which I personally don't need since I'm
- 6:24using the monitor that does connect
- 6:26through a display port but for those
- 6:28that don't there's that op
- 6:30and that is pretty much it well actually
- 6:33only in terms of Hardware there is stuff
- 6:35we'll need to do in software to get the
- 6:36most out of your CRT so once you have
- 6:39everything plugged in Windows should be
- 6:41able to detect the CRT if not
- 6:43automatically then you'll need to
- 6:45manually switch from your Modern Display
- 6:47to the CRT by bringing up the project
- 6:50menu by holding down the windows and PE
- 6:52key and just cycle through four separate
- 6:54options by either using your mouse or by
- 6:56just hitting the P key whilst still
- 6:58holding down the windows key this is
- 7:01great if for some reason the CRT is has
- 7:03a black screen it doesn't show anything
- 7:06so just by tapping the key you can then
- 7:08switch back to your main display without
- 7:10needing to blindly navigate through the
- 7:12project menu with a mouse a quick side
- 7:15note the project menu usually gives each
- 7:17monitor one of two labels first screen
- 7:20which is strangely referred to in the
- 7:22menu as PC screen or second screen now I
- 7:25get that project menu is designed for
- 7:28people that are using literal projectors
- 7:30that plugged into their PC so they can
- 7:32tell the difference but it works the
- 7:33same with dual monitor setup so can be a
- 7:36bit confusing now which of your two
- 7:38monitors will be assigned first screen
- 7:40depends on which Port it's plugged into
- 7:43so sometimes depending on how your
- 7:45graphics card handles the port hierarchy
- 7:48the CRT can become first screen with
- 7:50your main display set to Second this
- 7:52isn't a big deal but if you don't like
- 7:54the arrangement then you'll have to swap
- 7:56some cables around and yes you can
- 7:58change the this in your video card
- 8:00settings but that only affects Windows
- 8:02the buot up sequence your motherboard
- 8:04bio settings menu and sometimes the
- 8:07Windows login screen will always be
- 8:08displayed on the first
- 8:10screen okay so even though I'm using an
- 8:13Nvidia card all you AMD card users out
- 8:16there should be able to do all these
- 8:18exact same things in theory but since
- 8:20I'm a filthy in video shill some of this
- 8:22stuff might not apply to you but really
- 8:25AMD is capable of all of the same stuff
- 8:27I will be mentioning from this point on
- 8:30now if you're an Intel Graphics user
- 8:32there's no guarantee this will work even
- 8:34though it might because really most of
- 8:37the stuff is handled by windows and not
- 8:40entirely your graphics driver except
- 8:42there is one thing that I think applies
- 8:44only to in video cards and that is
- 8:47Windows sometimes doesn't detect the CT
- 8:49for whatever random reason and it turns
- 8:51out this is actually a firmware bug that
- 8:54applies to pretty much all nid cards
- 8:56prior to the 20 or 30 series so for
- 8:59those users you'll need to download the
- 9:02Nvidia Graphics firmware update tool for
- 9:04display port 1.3 and 1.4 Link in the
- 9:08description below uh this is not a
- 9:10driver update it is a firmware update so
- 9:13I would recommend that you have your PC
- 9:15plugged into a UPS because if the
- 9:17installation is interrupted it could
- 9:19very likely break your graphics card so
- 9:23why is this firmware important
- 9:24especially since we don't even need
- 9:26display port 1.3 or 1.4 in this
- 9:28situation
- 9:29well it turns out that this fix for the
- 9:31bug that affected the display ports
- 9:34monitor detection capability improves
- 9:36the detection capability across the
- 9:38board including the card's ability to
- 9:41properly detect the CRT even if it's
- 9:43plugged into HDMI and not just display
- 9:46port okay with all that annoyance out
- 9:48the way even though this next bit may
- 9:50seem to be very technical just follow my
- 9:53instructions and you'll be just fine
- 9:55usually at this point windows will be
- 9:56able to detect the CRT no problem the
- 9:59technology is so old however that a lot
- 10:02of the time Windows doesn't know the
- 10:04crt's full capability so often you will
- 10:06only have access to a handful of
- 10:09resolutions and refresh rates to choose
- 10:11from and a lot of them may not be very
- 10:13comfortable to look at if the refresh
- 10:16rate isn't higher than 60 HZ which gives
- 10:18the appearance of the screen flashing at
- 10:21you if you haven't seen my previous
- 10:23video on Coots check it out because it
- 10:26will explain why even though 60 HZ on
- 10:28the RTV doesn't have any noticeable
- 10:31flicker the computer monitor set to 60
- 10:34is noticeable I'm not going to get into
- 10:36it now of why that is just watch that
- 10:39video if you're curious but needless to
- 10:41say we really should be aiming for at
- 10:43least 70 HZ that is the point where the
- 10:46flicker stops being noticeable by a
- 10:48human eye so every time a new monitor is
- 10:51installed Windows will request some
- 10:53information from the monitor like the
- 10:55name of the model what its capabilities
- 10:57are its native resolution and other
- 10:59stuff like that this information is then
- 11:02stored in the Windows registry but often
- 11:04windows will struggle with this and may
- 11:07not be able to gather enough information
- 11:09about the CRT Beyond maybe the model
- 11:12name but sometimes not even that so
- 11:15we'll need to manually tell the Windows
- 11:16registry what the crt's model ID is
- 11:20along with all the info it needs now
- 11:22don't worry we're not going to be
- 11:24messing around with Registries and stuff
- 11:26like that there's already a tool that
- 11:28can do all that for us go and download
- 11:31custom resolution utility or Cru a tool
- 11:34by toasty X I'm currently using version
- 11:381.5.1 I'll have the download link in the
- 11:40description below after downloading you
- 11:42may need to also unz up the folder go
- 11:45into it and you'll notice some
- 11:46executables launch the one simply called
- 11:49Cru but before you do you really should
- 11:52be running this app on your CRT and not
- 11:55on some other display so switch to that
- 11:58if you haven't already already the
- 11:59reason is because the utility will need
- 12:01to be able to identify the monitor that
- 12:03you're using especially if Windows can't
- 12:06even tell what your CRT is even called
- 12:08sure you could check on the back of the
- 12:10monitor itself to see what its model
- 12:13name is but that can only take us so far
- 12:15because we need to make sure we select
- 12:17the right display we definitely don't
- 12:19want to accidentally make changes to
- 12:21your Modern Display but don't get too
- 12:23worried if you mess something up or make
- 12:25a horrible mistake because one of those
- 12:27other executables in that folder called
- 12:29reset all will'll do exactly that by
- 12:31resetting all currently plugged in
- 12:33monitors to their default profiles again
- 12:36This only affects the Windows registry
- 12:38profiles none of it will mess with the
- 12:40actual monitors themselves so when you
- 12:43go to the drop- down menu it shows a
- 12:45list of all the different displays that
- 12:47are stored in your Windows registry or
- 12:49in other words every single display that
- 12:51has ever been connected to your PC in
- 12:53the past so this list can potentially be
- 12:56really long but all we need to focus on
- 12:58is is the one that has the word active
- 13:01in parentheses this is why we have to do
- 13:03this on the CRT so that the utility can
- 13:06detect which of these displays is
- 13:08currently in use especially if you don't
- 13:09know the name of the CRT in which case
- 13:12it may just refer to it as generic plug-
- 13:14andplay monitor however that's the worst
- 13:16case scenario in most situations there
- 13:18will at least be some kind of model name
- 13:20in my case Windows was able to detect my
- 13:23Dell model IDE 7720p and my Samsung synm
- 13:27CRT which I used a few months prior but
- 13:31even if you know the name of your
- 13:32monitor the active label is still
- 13:35important because there may be some
- 13:37duplicates that are basically red
- 13:38hearings I don't know why they are
- 13:40duplicates I don't know why they exist
- 13:42just ignore anything that isn't labeled
- 13:44active so once you have selected your
- 13:47CRT you'll see there's a bunch of
- 13:48resolutions that may or may not be
- 13:50activated so what just enable everything
- 13:54and then click okay uh no what's listed
- 13:57here are really only the the more common
- 13:59basic standard stuff and don't
- 14:01necessarily reflect the true
- 14:02capabilities of your CRT so we need to
- 14:05find out some things about this Monitor
- 14:08and there are two approaches to this the
- 14:10first is to go to your web browser and
- 14:12do a search of your displays name and
- 14:15model and chances are you'll find a page
- 14:18that lists the specs and features of
- 14:20your CRT the second approach if you
- 14:22can't find any info on what your monitor
- 14:25specs are then no joke you can just
- 14:27experiment try at a bunch of relatively
- 14:30High standardized resolutions at a
- 14:32somewhat low refresh rate like 70 HZ and
- 14:36if the CRT happens to not support that
- 14:38specific resolution then it just won't
- 14:40work the CRT will simply display a
- 14:42message like out of range you won't be
- 14:45able to break your monitor just by
- 14:47trying out a whole bunch of resolution
- 14:49and frequency profiles I mean it is more
- 14:52time consuming but totally doable
- 14:55however if you are able to find some
- 14:57technical info about your coot monitor
- 14:59there are some key things to note like
- 15:01what your displays max resolution and
- 15:03refresh rate is in my case this Dell I'm
- 15:06using can support 1280 x 1024 with 70 HZ
- 15:11being that resolution's maximum refresh
- 15:13rate and the absolute highz refresh rate
- 15:15is 120 htz with that refresh rate's
- 15:18maximum resolution being 640x 480 so the
- 15:22rule of thumb is as you lower the
- 15:24maximum refresh rate you can increase
- 15:27the resolution or vice versa
- 15:29and these different refresh rates would
- 15:32usually be in intervals of 5 Herz so
- 15:35like 70 75 80 85 Etc with one exception
- 15:39and that is 72 HZ since that is the
- 15:42standard refresh rate for Motion
- 15:44Pictures which is intentionally
- 15:46different from the frame rate of movies
- 15:48that are 24 frames a second just watch
- 15:51my other video if you don't know why 72
- 15:53is so important in fact my Samsung sync
- 15:56Master's Max frequency at its Max rate
- 15:58resolution is 72 HZ and that's not a
- 16:01coincidence all right so let's go back
- 16:03to Cru we now know the max resolution
- 16:06and the max frequency so you can take
- 16:09off those two in Cru but if there isn't
- 16:12an option for one or more of those
- 16:15resolution frequency combinations then
- 16:17you're going to need to do a custom list
- 16:19like how here there is no 120 htz listed
- 16:22anywh but is kept off at only 75 so go
- 16:26over to the right here stand
- 16:27understanded resolutions and click on
- 16:29ADD here I'm going to select 640x 480
- 16:32since that is the highest resolution
- 16:34that the CRT can handle at its absolute
- 16:36Max refresh rate of a 120 so after
- 16:40changing it to 120 click okay and there
- 16:43it is now let's do the maximum
- 16:45resolution which is 1280 x 1024 with 70
- 16:48HZ being its highest at that resolution
- 16:51however I'm not actually going to be
- 16:53adding this resolution because out of
- 16:55all of these standard resolutions 1280 x
- 16:581024 is not a 4x3 aspect ratio but is in
- 17:02fact a 5x4 and this as well as most CRTs
- 17:06are usually 4x3 so according to the
- 17:09little amount of info I can find on the
- 17:11matter if a manufacturer wanted their
- 17:13consumer monitored to be fully Vasa
- 17:16compliant it had to support 1280 x 1024
- 17:19and not just 1280x 960 which actually is
- 17:23the 4x3 equivalent but since windows and
- 17:26many windows games like to default to
- 17:28the monitors max resolution I don't want
- 17:31it to always default to a totally wrong
- 17:33aspect ratio so I'm just not even going
- 17:35to give Windows the option on a side
- 17:37note eventually we would get consumer
- 17:39grade 1280 x 1024 LCD monitors at the
- 17:42turn of the 21st century because they're
- 17:44grade for word processing and also web
- 17:46browsing so every time someone on eBay
- 17:48is trying to sell you a 4x3 LCD monitor
- 17:5295% of the time it's actually a 5x4
- 17:54monitor okay so we have Max refresh rate
- 17:58and Max max 4x3 resolution that the CRT
- 18:01is capable of producing now we can keep
- 18:04adding new combinations of resolutions
- 18:06and refresh rates you know in between
- 18:08these two extremes but for now let's
- 18:11just click on okay all right so it's
- 18:13saved but we need to execute the changes
- 18:16by running restart 64 since I'm using
- 18:19the 64-bit version of Windows the screen
- 18:22will turn to black for a few seconds as
- 18:24the new display profile is applied you
- 18:26can even hear the disconnect and connect
- 18:28by sound effect and that should be it
- 18:30but if you don't see an image then press
- 18:33f8 to undo the changes fix whatever
- 18:35error you made and then try again now
- 18:38some people might point out that many
- 18:40video card drivers have already built in
- 18:42features for adding custom resolutions
- 18:45yeah except in the case of the Nvidia
- 18:47control panel as an example if the
- 18:50driver doesn't believe your monitor can
- 18:52handle a certain resolution when in
- 18:54reality it can the GPU very often will
- 18:56handle the scaling instead of your your
- 18:58monitor custom resolutions are never
- 19:01treated as standard resolution so some
- 19:03applications including certain games
- 19:05won't even let you select that custom
- 19:07resolution they just won't detect it Cru
- 19:10is just much better in this regard
- 19:12because it is telling your PC that these
- 19:15are resolutions your monitor can
- 19:17natively produce and so all your games
- 19:20never question it if they offer that
- 19:22specific resolution it will work all
- 19:25right technically we're done but one of
- 19:27the most most annoying things with
- 19:29certain games is that sometimes a game
- 19:31will pick really random and strange
- 19:33resolution and refresh rate combos like
- 19:35Quake three Arena of all games I mean
- 19:37Quake three arena is like one of the
- 19:38most stable most well put together games
- 19:41of all time but I guess you can't be
- 19:43perfect because often not always but
- 19:45often this game likes to Def fall to 60
- 19:48HZ not a problem for LCDs big problem
- 19:51for CRTs because of the flicker however
- 19:55like with most games Quake 3 won't run
- 19:57in a particular refresh rate if windows
- 20:00won't let it usually when you pick a
- 20:02resolution in a video game each option
- 20:05may come with a rather long list of
- 20:07frequencies that can run in said
- 20:09resolution so for instance if I picked
- 20:12800 by 600 it may give me an option to
- 20:15select 60 70 72 75 85 and 100 but this
- 20:20is the best part about Cru you don't
- 20:23need to activate or add all these
- 20:25different refresh rates that isn't this
- 20:27resolution maximum in this case being
- 20:29100 htz so just add 800 by 600 add 100
- 20:34HZ and that's it don't add any other
- 20:36frequencies in that same resolution the
- 20:39result is that every time you select
- 20:40this resolution the game will be forced
- 20:43to run at that 100 htz refresh rate so
- 20:46every time I run 1280 by 960 it's always
- 20:5070 and never 60 if I select 1024 x 768
- 20:54it will always be 85 and so on now that
- 20:58that's for well relatively modern stuff
- 21:01but what about real retro resolutions
- 21:03like 240p or in the case of games for
- 21:06Doss 200p specifically 320x 200 which is
- 21:11technically a 16 by10 aspect ratio in
- 21:14fact all the PC games had a lot of 16
- 21:17X10 resolutions to choose from aha so
- 21:19that's why back in the day LCDs were 16
- 21:22X1 at first before 16x9 replaced it but
- 21:25anyways
- 21:27320x200 used to be a very common
- 21:29resolution for dos gaming because it was
- 21:32a little faster and used slightly less
- 21:35vram or processing than the 4x3
- 21:37equivalent of 320x 240 doesn't sound
- 21:41like much but trust me back in those
- 21:43days with those really slow 386 and 486
- 21:47that did actually boost performance
- 21:49quite a lot but even though 320x200 is
- 21:53technically a widescreen resolution
- 21:54these games were still designed for 4x3
- 21:56aspect ratio kind of kind of like how
- 21:58the NES and SNES ran games at 256x 224
- 22:03which was not 4x3 on paper but the TV
- 22:06would always stretch the image to make
- 22:07it 4x3 so each pixel isn't perfectly
- 22:10Square they are slightly rectangular but
- 22:13here's the thing unlike retro game
- 22:15consoles desktop Coots from the '90s and
- 22:172000s never presented these games in
- 22:20their native resolution this is because
- 22:22high-res capable desktop monitors need
- 22:25to have very thin scan lines to be able
- 22:28to fit like over a thousand or more
- 22:30Progressive lines as opposed to a TV's
- 22:33480 or 576 at most that are interlaced
- 22:38so half the work of that even so these
- 22:41tiny scan lines would actually be way
- 22:44too skinny for something as low as 200p
- 22:46so you'd mostly be seeing really thick
- 22:49black lines compared to what a similar
- 22:51signal would look on a CRT television so
- 22:53what most PC monitors would do is double
- 22:56the resolution for these really Low
- 22:58video signals so even though a game like
- 23:00Doom would send a signal of 320 x 200
- 23:04the monitor would increase that to 640x
- 23:06400 and that is a very important number
- 23:10because that is the resolution of Dos
- 23:13before Graphics based os's like Windows
- 23:15and Linux took over the PC ecosystem and
- 23:18this might surprise you but modern
- 23:20displays still by default support this
- 23:24resolution right out the box since many
- 23:26motherboard boots sequences and system
- 23:29bius menus run at 640x 400 so although a
- 23:33modern graphics card cannot support a
- 23:36very outdated 320x 200 image they can
- 23:39still output 640x 400 so we're going to
- 23:43add that in the standard resolutions
- 23:45list and set it to 70 HZ because that
- 23:48was also the standard for dos and fun
- 23:50fact this is why Doom ran at 35 frames
- 23:52per second if you know your math 35 is
- 23:55exactly half of 70 so we're adding this
- 23:58profile because if you run something
- 23:59like dosbox you will be able to
- 24:02experience dos games exactly how they
- 24:04were back in the '90s since even back
- 24:06then 200p games were always double to
- 24:09400p video signal so I might as well
- 24:12show this now since we're on the topic
- 24:14the best way to set up dosbox is to go
- 24:17open the config in the text editor go to
- 24:20where full resolution is and put there
- 24:23original then scroll down to the render
- 24:26section and next to Tor input normal 2X
- 24:30and make sure aspect is set to false the
- 24:33normal 2x setting will make all low
- 24:35rares games run at Double resolution
- 24:37while higher rare stuff like the DOS
- 24:40prompt will be displayed in its native
- 24:42resolution of 640x 400 or any game that
- 24:45happens to also support that resolution
- 24:48and the reason for Full Resolution being
- 24:51set to original will allow for other
- 24:53stuff that isn't just 200p or 400p but
- 24:56also 240p resized to 480p or more
- 25:00specifically
- 25:01640x480 another very common resolution
- 25:04in DOS gaming or any other number of
- 25:06resolutions that dosbox is capable of
- 25:09running and since everything is now
- 25:12running at 70 HZ this will help reduce
- 25:14the stutter that a 60 HZ display often
- 25:16suffers from because it no longer has to
- 25:18drop one out of every seven frames now
- 25:21that we're running the display at the
- 25:23same frame frequency as all 90s dos
- 25:25based gaming PCs did now the frame rate
- 25:28isn't going to be perfect in every game
- 25:30it depends on the game but that's really
- 25:32more of a dosbox problem that's not
- 25:34really an issue with your display or the
- 25:37way your display is
- 25:39configured how are you doing are you
- 25:42managing to keep up I could drastically
- 25:44simplify this tutorial but I think going
- 25:46deeper into not just the how but also
- 25:49the why of these specific steps that
- 25:52we're performing here and hopefully if
- 25:54you ever run into a problem you'll
- 25:56possess the knowledge know that may help
- 25:58you figure out a solution to that
- 26:00problem because of the understanding of
- 26:02how and why this stuff is the way that
- 26:04it is rather than just passively
- 26:07following steps that seem random or
- 26:09pointless at this point we can now add
- 26:11all the other more common resolutions
- 26:13stuff like 800x 600 1024 x 768 and so on
- 26:18along with their Max refresh rate that
- 26:20this specific monitor can handle however
- 26:22there's a lot more resolutions you can
- 26:25add for instance even though this
- 26:26monitor cannot support more than 70 HZ
- 26:29at 1280 by 960 it can do 72 Herz at 1200
- 26:34by 900 and 702 is absolutely perfect for
- 26:37watching movies I I didn't think movies
- 26:40would look smoother on a CRT and yet
- 26:42they really do even if they run at 24
- 26:45frames a second I mean sure if you had
- 26:47friends over we would still use
- 26:49something bigger rather than try to
- 26:51huddle around a small CRT but if you're
- 26:54one of those lucky ones that can get a
- 26:56very large desktop CRT 1280 by 960 or
- 26:591024 is not the limit there are some
- 27:02models out there that can go over
- 27:051440p I mean they are rare but the still
- 27:09somewhat common 19in CRTs with a 1600x
- 27:121200 max resolution is probably the
- 27:15closest uh 4x3 approximation to 1920 x
- 27:191080 in terms of total pixels on the
- 27:22screen so I don't think games on this
- 27:24old Tech are going to look worse when
- 27:26compared to a modern display I would
- 27:29like to point out that if you want
- 27:30better black levels without sacrificing
- 27:32the brightness of the image then you'll
- 27:34need to increase your monitor's contrast
- 27:36setting while lowering the brightness
- 27:38setting until the black pixels that
- 27:40appear dark gray turns into actual black
- 27:44and then once again head into your GPU
- 27:47control panel and go to the color
- 27:49settings and increase the gamma until
- 27:51you can barely see the dark Grays in the
- 27:54reference image older games and older
- 27:56versions of windows generally didn't
- 27:58look too dark back in the day but it is
- 28:00a bit of an issue today since modern
- 28:02windows and modern drivers are more
- 28:05balanced for modern displays than they
- 28:07are for old CRTs by raising the gamma in
- 28:11Windows whilst lowering your monitor's
- 28:13brightness it will help maintain the
- 28:15Deep blacks whilst not having it be too
- 28:17difficult to see darker shades of color
- 28:19in games and while we at it since we're
- 28:22still in the control panel uh especially
- 28:25For You Nvidia users go over to adjust
- 28:28desktop size and position go to the
- 28:31scaling Tab and under select scaling
- 28:33mode select aspect ratio and under
- 28:36perform scaling on select display
- 28:39instead of GPU this will help your
- 28:42monitor to as often as possible display
- 28:45the visuals at their desired resolution
- 28:48rather than having the GPU scale it in
- 28:51the software mode which will result in a
- 28:53softer more blurry look which we really
- 28:55don't want so this was a pretty long
- 28:58video I hope that this tutorial was
- 29:01clear and concise easy to understand and
- 29:05I hope that you'll be able to get your
- 29:07CRTs to run as well as humanly possible
- 29:11until next
- 29:26time
