  1. 0:00- In this video, I'm gonna be talking
  2. 0:01through my recommended AeroPress technique.
  3. 0:04Now this is a technique
  4. 0:05that I think will be a great default technique.
  5. 0:07You may want to vary from this,
  6. 0:09you might want to do other things.
  7. 0:10I would recommend exploring the world of AeroPresses
  8. 0:12but this is a technique designed
  9. 0:14to do sort of the least amount necessary to get
  10. 0:17to fantastic coffee reliably every single time.
  11. 0:21A technique designed to set you up for success
  12. 0:24whenever you brew coffee with your AeroPress.
  13. 0:26So let's start at the beginning
  14. 0:27with the recipe or ratio that I would recommend
  15. 0:30and this, immediately, has a little bit of choice.
  16. 0:34I'm using a light roasted coffee
  17. 0:35and I like a high extraction here
  18. 0:37that will give me quite a strong cup with a lower ratio.
  19. 0:40So I'm using 55 grams per liter
  20. 0:43or in this brew: 11 grams to 200 grams of water.
  21. 0:46Darker roasts, you may not want to extract
  22. 0:48to the same extent so I might recommend 60
  23. 0:50or 65 grams a liter
  24. 0:52and not extracting quite as much from it.
  25. 0:54In terms of setting up your AeroPress, not much to do.
  26. 0:57Pull your plunger out, put a paper into the paper holder,
  27. 1:02there's no need to rinse your filter paper here,
  28. 1:04pop it in, lock it in and place it on top
  29. 1:07of whatever you're gonna brew into.
  30. 1:08You don't have to brew into a carafe.
  31. 1:10You can brew into a mug, cup,
  32. 1:11whatever you like as long as it's pretty sturdy
  33. 1:13'cause you're gonna be pressing on it in a second.
  34. 1:15Now, let's talk about grind size.
  35. 1:17For this brew, I'm actually grinding really pretty fine,
  36. 1:19finer that I would even brew for, say, a pour over.
  37. 1:22So getting a little bit closer
  38. 1:23to that kind of nearly espresso range.
  39. 1:26If you're using a medium or darker roasted coffee,
  40. 1:28you may not want to grind this fine.
  41. 1:30It will certainly increase your extraction
  42. 1:32and strength but it may not taste good.
  43. 1:34So there's no one answer on grind size here.
  44. 1:37I'm gonna load this coffee into the AeroPress
  45. 1:40and I'm gonna boil my water.
  46. 1:41Now, one more note on water temperature.
  47. 1:43Again, with lighter roasts,
  48. 1:45you can go all the way up to boiling
  49. 1:46and I would recommend that, however,
  50. 1:48for medium or darker roasts,
  51. 1:50I would drop my temperature the darker the roast is.
  52. 1:53For a really dark roast, I'd be brewing even
  53. 1:55under 90 degrees Celsius, down maybe at 85.
  54. 1:58For a medium roast, 90 to 95 might be a sweet spot
  55. 2:01if you have a temperature-controlled kettle.
  56. 2:04Start your timer then you're gonna add 200 grams of water.
  57. 2:08Try and get the coffee wet as quickly as you can
  58. 2:10as you pour and if it's all wet just pour in the middle
  59. 2:13and get up to 200 grams or whatever ratio you're using.
  60. 2:16Now, you don't have to use a pour over kettle
  61. 2:19like this one, a gooseneck kettle.
  62. 2:20You can use a regular kettle, you could use a pot
  63. 2:22that you boiled on the stove; it doesn't really matter.
  64. 2:24It's just about getting the water in
  65. 2:25and getting all the coffee nice and evenly saturated.
  66. 2:29Obviously we're gonna move this off our scale,
  67. 2:30we're not gonna press on the scale, there's no need for that
  68. 2:32and we're just gonna wait for two minutes.
  69. 2:37Here's one I started earlier.
  70. 2:42When you get to two minutes
  71. 2:43what we're gonna do is start to swirl
  72. 2:46and it's gonna be a very gentle swirl.
  73. 2:47Make sure that you're holding both the piston
  74. 2:49and the base of the unit and just give it a gentle swirl.
  75. 2:52That's it.
  76. 2:53You're not trying to create a vortex in there.
  77. 2:56You're just trying to gently knock the ground coffee
  78. 2:58that's formed a crust down
  79. 2:59so it starts to sink to the bottom
  80. 3:01and then you're gonna wait for about 30 seconds
  81. 3:04and then you're gonna start to press.
  82. 3:06Now when it comes to pressing,
  83. 3:07I would recommend being relatively gentle.
  84. 3:09You shouldn't be leaning into this.
  85. 3:11You should be able to do it comfortably
  86. 3:13with your body away from the AeroPress.
  87. 3:14So not pressing too hard at all.
  88. 3:17Press gently, press evenly
  89. 3:18and once you've waited 30 seconds
  90. 3:21you're gonna press all the way
  91. 3:24until you've pressed every drop of greatness out
  92. 3:26of this press, down into the carafe or the cup below.
  93. 3:30(coffee dripping)
  94. 3:33For a 200 ml brew for this grind size,
  95. 3:35that takes me about 30 seconds.
  96. 3:37Once you've pressed pull back just a little bit,
  97. 3:39that'll help prevent drips, turn it upside down.
  98. 3:42Obviously you can clean up now, pop the coffee out,
  99. 3:44give it a rinse, give it a clean, reset for the next day
  100. 3:47and you've got, I hope, a great cup of coffee.
  101. 3:49Now, if it's not a great cup of coffee,
  102. 3:52again, it's gonna be the grind size
  103. 3:53and maybe the temperature that you're gonna tweak.
  104. 3:55If you've got too much bitterness in your cup,
  105. 3:58chances are you might have ground a bit fine
  106. 4:00or brewed a bit hot for the coffee that you're using.
  107. 4:02If you've got a bit of sourness
  108. 4:03in your cup, well, the opposite.
  109. 4:05Feel free to get to maximum temperature
  110. 4:07and try grinding a little bit finer.
  111. 4:09Now this, I think, gets you to a great cup
  112. 4:11of coffee in the simplest, neatest way possible
  113. 4:13with no additional unnecessary steps
  114. 4:16but it's not the one way to brew the AeroPress.
  115. 4:18So down below, I've linked to a bunch
  116. 4:20of other AeroPress recipes.
  117. 4:22If you want something that is your kind of daily driver,
  118. 4:24your regular brew method, I hope this is it
  119. 4:26but if you wanna play and explore and have some fun
  120. 4:28with an AeroPress which I think is kind of half the point
  121. 4:31then I would recommend checking out how other people use it.
  122. 4:34Explore those recipes.
  123. 4:35They're all linked in the description box down below
  124. 4:37but now I wanna hear from you.
  125. 4:39How are you making your AeroPress these days?
  126. 4:41What do you like?
  127. 4:42What don't you like about the AeroPress?
  128. 4:44Do you still have questions?
  129. 4:46Because don't worry, there's another video coming.
  130. 4:48We'll be looking at both accessories
  131. 4:50and all of the filtration options for the AeroPress
  132. 4:53but, for now, I'll say thank you so much for watching.
  133. 4:56I hope you have a great day.
  134. 5:08That is good, that is, that is good.
  135. 5:10I mean, I don't know why I'm surprised.
