- 0:00there have been times when I have used
- 0:02the term Gothic when speaking to
- 0:04customers about their room designs and
- 0:06you can immediately feel the hesitancy
- 0:08the retraction the reluctancy when
- 0:10speaking of the style but after I
- 0:12explain to the customer what I mean
- 0:15they're completely on born I want to use
- 0:17today to bring some clarity as to what
- 0:19Gothic is and what Gothic is not there's
- 0:23a lot of misuse of this term and that
- 0:25leads to
- 0:27misunderstanding of the term and this
- 0:29all stems from a lack of historic
- 0:31research if I say Gothic to the average
- 0:34person it's highly likely that certain
- 0:37images subcultures and people will come
- 0:39to mind that could deter someone from
- 0:42using the design style in their home
- 0:44it's also highly likely that the roots
- 0:46Origins and beauty of which this word
- 0:48truly defines will never cross the mind
- 0:51in the past 40 years the word gothic has
- 0:54been somewhat hijacked resulting in a
- 0:56current state of interpretation that
- 0:58pales in comparison into the rich depth
- 1:01of its formerly understood nomenclature
- 1:03let's start from what we think we
- 1:05understand Gothic to be nowadays and
- 1:07work our way backwards as I think that
- 1:10will be the most helpful in this video
- 1:13the most recent understanding of goth or
- 1:16gothic is a music subculture that
- 1:18emerged out of the late 70s and early
- 1:2080s hippie psychedelic feel-good music
- 1:23had become mainstream and punk music in
- 1:26the late 60s was the extreme
- 1:28counterbalance response to that
- 1:30following punk in the Post Punk era you
- 1:33had the birth of Gothic Rock which used
- 1:35punk as its footing then Incorporated
- 1:38darker dramatic notes chords and lyrics
- 1:41this of course attracted a certain type
- 1:42of people who then created a style for
- 1:45the cult-like following of this genre
- 1:47now the reason goth was used as the term
- 1:50for the people of this music subculture
- 1:53was to Define them as being Outsiders
- 1:55who conducted their lives in a way that
- 1:58wasn't common to others but this type of
- 2:00goth had never existed before and they
- 2:03do not have any type of deep historic
- 2:05Heritage this word was misused in that
- 2:08it acted as an adjective as opposed to a
- 2:12noun the true term goth is short for an
- 2:15actual germic people who existed in the
- 2:17Roman era the tribes of the ostrogoths
- 2:20and the Visigoths were nicknamed Goths
- 2:24the Romans and Goths endured nearly 300
- 2:26years of tension sprinkled with Wars and
- 2:28conflicts although the r rans aimed to
- 2:30use the Goths to defend their borders
- 2:33they never viewed these people as equals
- 2:35or even close to the same they viewed
- 2:38these people as barbaric and uncivilized
- 2:40simply because they lived differently
- 2:43the word gothi was coined by Renaissance
- 2:46artists in the early 16th century who
- 2:48thought that the early medieval
- 2:49architectural style was ugly and it
- 2:52didn't conform to the classical ideals
- 2:54they were trying to achieve they felt it
- 2:56was beneath them unenlightened and
- 2:58related it to their feelings of the goth
- 3:01tribes in the past the famous Italian
- 3:03Renaissance painter and architect
- 3:05Georgio vasari Amplified this negative
- 3:08connotation when he referred to gothic
- 3:10art as monstrous and barbaric the truth
- 3:13is that this type of architecture
- 3:15evolved from Romanesque architecture in
- 3:17northern France and it was a way of
- 3:19bringing in lots of sunlight and
- 3:21brightness into large and towering
- 3:24structures many of them being churches
- 3:26arches vaed ceilings stained glass large
- 3:29Windows ribbed vaults these are all
- 3:32characteristics of the Gothic
- 3:34architecture these buildings were
- 3:35created to be divine and holy quite the
- 3:38opposite of how people view Gothic
- 3:40architecture in a haunted and demonic
- 3:43perspective gothic art did much of the
- 3:46same in its focus on higher power and
- 3:49connection to humanity the Figures were
- 3:51more realistic the Expressions on the
- 3:53faces more detailed the Vivid colors and
- 3:56gold accents brought a sense of intimacy
- 3:59again again quite the opposite of how
- 4:01people think of Gothic nowadays however
- 4:04the style did become more associated
- 4:06with darker elements within the
- 4:08literature and art world when famous
- 4:11writers such as Edgar Allen Poe
- 4:13referenced the style and put a different
- 4:15spin on things it became intriguing to
- 4:18view these medieval rooted Creations
- 4:20through a darker lens and ask oneself
- 4:23what would it be like if these Grand
- 4:25structures were not bright and holy but
- 4:28dark and somewhat sinister what started
- 4:30as a fictional and imaginative view took
- 4:33off as a mainstream perspective so the
- 4:36next time you're thinking about styling
- 4:37a room which will convey Heritage a
- 4:40richness of personality and ornate
- 4:42design do not shy away from looking into
- 4:46Gothic influences you would be surprised
- 4:48at how much this style has influenced
- 4:51some of the most prominent structures
- 4:54and Interiors on Earth so visually
- 4:56striking and beautiful they're revered
- 4:59and they have stood the test of time if
