- 0:00The triple aim, three words that changed
- 0:02how we think about healthcare
- 0:04improvement. In 2008, the Institute for
- 0:07Healthcare Improvement proposed a
- 0:09framework with three simultaneous goals.
- 0:12Goal one, improve population health, not
- 0:15just treating sick individuals, keeping
- 0:17entire communities healthier. Goal two,
- 0:20improve the patient experience, better
- 0:23care, better outcomes, higher
- 0:25satisfaction. Goal three, reduce per
- 0:27capita cost. Spend less per person while
- 0:29achieving the first two goals. The key
- 0:31word is simultaneous. Most systems
- 0:34optimize one goal at the expense of
- 0:36others. The triple aim says you need all
- 0:38three together. How do you achieve it?
- 0:41Integration, coordinated care,
- 0:43accountable organizations that take
- 0:45responsibility for cost and quality
- 0:47across a patient population. It's not
- 0:49easy, but it gives healthcare leaders a
- 0:52north star. When you make a decision,
- 0:54ask yourself, does this improve health,
- 0:57experience, and cost, or just one?
