1:04go how do we even jump into this we just
1:08we need to start with what we know
1:10hello silva squad and welcome back to
1:12the damn sofa that's the sofa my name is
1:15paul and this is my shady sidekick

1:19as y'all have seen today
1:22we're going to be talking about a tale
1:24that
1:25literally will have you screaming crying
1:28laughing at her interview
1:30all sorts of things at the heart of it
1:32though is the monster stephanie lazarus
1:35and that is who we will be discussing
1:37now stephanie's interrogation would
1:39literally be something that if you sold
1:41tickets to it would probably be a summer
1:44blockbuster i'm not gonna lie once i saw
1:46the interrogation i was like i i can't
1:49stop there i read the book the lazarus
1:51files by matthew mcgowan uh now he did a
1:54lot of research into this case i'm gonna
1:56put the link for it down in the
1:57description below if you want to read it
1:59yourself if you're into true crime
2:01stories books that kind of thing
2:03you're gonna want to read this one they
2:04also went through plenty of articles
2:06things of that nature um and so what i
2:09want to do for this video is i want to
2:11talk about the aspects of this case that
2:14really stood out to me aspects of the
2:16interrogation that really stood out to
2:18me now this case is even more bizarre
2:21tragic and to be quite frank infuriating
2:23because of the dynamics surrounding it
2:26stephanie lazarus was an lapd officer
2:30for a long time
2:31now she would have what we could say a
2:34complicated relationship
2:36with a gentleman by the name of john
2:38rutten now we're going to talk more
2:39about him in just a little bit
2:41john would go on to marry a woman by the
2:43name of sherry rasmussen
2:46now this did not go over very well with
2:48miss stephanie and after a few
2:50confrontations she would take the life
2:53of sherry
2:54but stephanie would use her wits her
2:57training all of that kind of stuff that
2:58she learned from being a police officer
3:00to help her get away with this and she
3:03would set the whole scene up the whole
3:05situation up to make it look like a
3:08robbery gone wrong
3:09and she would get away with this for
3:11well over 20 years now even though
3:14sherry's parents and other people would
3:16be like
3:17you need to look into this you know
3:18ex-girlfriend of john's this lapd
3:20officer
3:21that didn't seem to matter that got
3:23pushed to the side that got explained
3:24away
3:25now here's the thing again
3:28you know over two decades later this all
3:30comes crashing down right and when it
3:32does
3:33stephanie is brought in for an
3:35interrogation by essentially co-workers
3:38and this is the interrogation that i
3:40spoke of that is just like
3:43one of the most unique ones that i have
3:45ever seen stephanie doesn't know during
3:47this interrogation that she is actually
3:48the suspect right but once they get a
3:51few minutes into it i mean she's not
3:52dumb she's been a cop for a long time
3:54right she catches on to this but it's
3:57her reactions to this her body's
4:00reactions her facial expressions
4:03that just have us going
4:07what am i watching now i'm just gonna go
4:09ahead and warn the damn sofa squad
4:10already told you to put your seatbelts
4:11on
4:12the cringe is painful in this one you
4:15can expect to see a lot of god it's been
4:18a long time ago um you know god that's
4:20been a million years ago i mean oh geez
4:24um geez um jeez
4:27you know also definitely a bunch of it's
4:29been a million years ago i mean oh i i
4:32think i haven't talked to him in a long
4:33time um i couldn't even tell you when
4:35the last time i talked to him yeah i
4:37mean it's been so long ago you know i
4:39don't understand why you're talking
4:40about some guy i dated a million years
4:42ago and a healthy sprinkling of this i
4:45have to check my pictures um or um in
4:48fact i was just coming across some
4:49pictures that i just scanned i take a
4:51lot of photos now before we get to this
4:54or you know even
4:55this
4:57bless her heart we need to talk about
5:00the background of the story now let's
5:03start with the innocent person in this
5:04story the victim sherry rasmussen now
5:08her like many of these other victims
5:10that we see in these stories right
5:13it's such a pattern it's just so
5:14heartbreaking she was this amazing human
5:17being okay her time here on earth was
5:19stolen way too soon sherry rasmussen was
5:22born february 7th 1957 and she had so
5:26much going for her she was a daughter
5:28she was a sister she was a friend she
5:31was a lover she was a nurse and really
5:34she seemed like the type person that
5:36anything she put her mind to
5:39she was gonna get at she skipped grades
5:42she graduated college super early she
5:44was excelling at her career at a very
5:46young age now one of the things that i
5:49personally learned from reading about
5:52her and researching her
5:54was this five-year plan that she would
5:56do with her life and not only was she
5:58just very meticulous about you know
6:00living intentionally i guess you could
6:02say and saying this is where i want to
6:04be in five years we're going to revisit
6:05it this is how we get there digital
6:07today you know because it really kind of
6:09reiterated this whole thing of if you
6:10chip away at a goal bit by bit and look
6:13at where you've been you're going to get
6:16where you want to go
6:17and i really took that away from her she
6:19just seemed like such an awesome person
6:22now this drive of hers would take her
6:24all the way to being the director of
6:25nursing at the glendale adventist
6:27medical center now this dynamic of
6:30sherry this drive that could make it
6:32seem to others like success was like her
6:34natural just state of being right
6:36this seems like it was something that
6:38really attracted john rutten to her he
6:41seemed like that drive that success
6:45probably the energy that she had around
6:47her
6:49was very attractive and appealing to him
6:51sherry's parents names are nells and
6:52loretta rasmussen now her father was a
6:55very successful dentist and her mother
6:58was a very successful office manager she
6:59helped run his practices for him and so
7:02together they worked as a team and they
7:04did quite well now before we get into
7:06more the dynamics of like sherry and
7:08john we first need to also talk about
7:10jon and stephanie so john was a
7:13mechanical engineering student at ucla
7:15and this is where he would meet
7:16stephanie lazarus now she was studying
7:19political science at ucla now these two
7:22essentially they had a lot in common
7:23right they were both athletic they were
7:25both really
7:26super into fitness sports they sound
7:29like very competitive type people to me
7:31now all that being said their
7:33relationship the dynamics of their
7:36friendship
7:37was probably one could say
7:39unconventional kind of odd and even
7:41stephanie will mention this in her
7:44interrogation what did the relationship
7:46between you and john
7:49you know i don't
7:50it was kind of a weird relationship i
7:52mean we
7:53we dated um i can't say that he was my
7:56boyfriend i don't know that he would
7:58have considered me his girlfriend john
8:00and sherry weren't really officially an
8:02item in college or ever for that matter
8:06but
8:07they were doing stuff together right now
8:08a lot of people kind of describe the
8:10scenario between her and john in college
8:13is like it seemed like stephanie wanted
8:15more from him but he didn't and i think
8:18you could say that this feeling extended
8:20the rest of their time together right
8:21but they would do stuff in school right
8:23they would go to games together they
8:24would watch each other in their you know
8:26sports stuff
8:27uh and all that kind of thing to me it
8:29sounded like she was a tomboy
8:32and
8:34had that kind of chummy dynamic with
8:36guys or whatever
8:37and
8:38but maybe wanted to be more with this
8:40specific guy now also that being said it
8:42seems to me that john kind of kept her
8:45as like a back burner type person now on
8:47the stand he would even say he was like
8:49yeah i never considered her like a
8:51girlfriend we weren't an item and in
8:53fact we weren't even romantically like
8:56doing anything in college right
8:58basically he just described some like
8:59heavy makeout sessions or whatever now
9:02after college that would change that
9:04would turn into
9:05you know more of a romantic relationship
9:08that would deepen
9:09but again it didn't really deepen the
9:11feelings it was more like they just
9:12started hooking up now at this point she
9:14sounded more like a friend with benefits
9:16right at least coming from john now she
9:19would even like go to trips to his home
9:21whatever she knew his family
9:23and also come out court you know he
9:25never introduced her as a girlfriend in
9:27those situations
9:29so
9:30to me again it sounds like she was a
9:32hookup it sounds like she was a back
9:33burner it sounds like john was never
9:35gonna really want to make her wifey like
9:39she was just kind of like a chummy
9:41tomboy
9:43friend with benefits to you know
9:46serve his needs for certain things or
9:48whatever and
9:50there was gonna always be some other
9:52woman that would take the place of wifey
9:55who would end up being sherry now this
9:57whole thing about when john was in court
9:59testifying about like well no she's not
10:00really my girlfriend i was like i bet
10:02that chapter has
10:04now after they graduated as we know by
10:06now stephanie would go and apply to
10:09police academy where dude this would be
10:11her career right john would get a job as
10:13an electrical engineer and they kind of
10:15just started doing their own thing in
10:17this dynamic this way things were going
10:19for them this seems like it was going to
10:21be the closest situation
10:24to like a relationship that she was ever
10:28going to be able to have with john
10:30whether she wanted to or not but then
10:33when someone else came along that would
10:35even take that away and that person's
10:37name was sherry so let's talk a bit more
10:40now about sherry and john and that
10:42dynamic between them now for john it was
10:44love at first sight when he met sherry
10:47at a party in 1984 and like i said aside
10:50from her being a beautiful young woman
10:52she was a successful driven person and
10:55that was something that was like really
10:56attractive to john now they would
10:58quickly become a couple and they didn't
11:00waste much time at getting into marriage
11:02which would be on november 23rd 1985.
11:06now it did sound like along the way that
11:07there are some peculiar type behaviors
11:10that would maybe raise an eyebrow
11:12especially maybe with people who knew
11:13her her parents friends things like that
11:16so first of all
11:18instead of getting like an engagement
11:19ring and doing all that he they they got
11:22a bmw now
11:24to each their own i'm not trying to say
11:26like oh this or that or whatever but the
11:28thing that was kind of odd with it is
11:30sherry number one had a toyota that was
11:33you know had less than 10 000 miles on
11:35it or something
11:37to me she doesn't seem like the type
11:39person
11:40that would be like oh you know i'm going
11:42to make a a a decision based on i want a
11:46fancy bmw right she was going to be more
11:48mature more no this is a toyota it lasts
11:51a long time we we're paying this off
11:53that kind of thing right so the bmw
11:55thing and having like two car payments
11:57and yada yada it seemed more like a john
12:00idea right
12:02so there was that now let's talk a
12:04little bit about john here for a minute
12:06so john had seemed to be very insecure
12:09about being accepted by her family right
12:12especially by nells the father remember
12:15he was dennis he's very successful all
12:16this stuff
12:17so
12:19he would do a couple of like kind of odd
12:20things i'm going to list some examples
12:22here that i read in the book um that i
12:24was just like
12:27so one example that matthew cited in his
12:29book the lazarus files is at christmas
12:32time at one point john had shown nells a
12:35picture of sharing a bathing suit and
12:37you know john was basically like who
12:38wouldn't want to see that's his wife
12:40and again it's kind of like that's her
12:43dad you know what i'm saying like why
12:44would you do that um then there was this
12:46other example about you know they were
12:48like videotaping the christmas or
12:49whatever and this is actually on video
12:52where john was talking to the
12:54four-month-old niece
12:56and
12:57essentially like pretending to have a
12:58conversation with her
13:00about you know him being liked by the
13:02family and stuff like that it was almost
13:03like he was projecting his insecurities
13:06onto this conversation
13:08knowing that people could hear and it's
13:10just it's just felt really gross right
13:14so there's just kind of this awkward
13:15behavior like this very i'm insecure i
13:18might have low self-esteem that kind of
13:20thing i'm really
13:21super extra about being accepted yada
13:24yada and it just you know it is what it
13:25is but again
13:27this is who sherry loved right there
13:30this is this is going to be fine this is
13:31our daughter loves we're going to accept
13:33it we're going to go with it yada yada
13:36so you know
13:37it is what it is and it sounds like it's
13:39an unfortunate way that things played
13:41out in the sense that he couldn't just
13:43be cool with it but we'll get to more of
13:45my thoughts
13:46on him here in a little bit now all
13:48these things about you know young love
13:51marital bliss christmases together this
13:53is all nice and wonderful in how things
13:55should be
13:56except in this situation it left
13:58somebody out that was not happy about
14:00that and that somebody as you probably
14:03know is stephanie lazarus so when
14:06stephanie found out about john's
14:07engagement to sherry i mean she was
14:10depressed she was sad she was you know
14:12not cool with us
14:13now stephanie had a roommate at the time
14:16i believe his name was mark and he would
14:18say you know what i never saw like john
14:20picking her up like normal relationship
14:22stuff going on right he never really saw
14:24that but stephanie would basically be
14:26like you know
14:28that's my man you know i'm in a love
14:30triangle
14:31one thing that's very prevalent is
14:33stephanie thought she was in a love
14:35triangle right and nobody else in the
14:37triangle know they were in the triangle
14:39except for stephanie now another example
14:41that was cited like in the trial on the
14:44stand in the book
14:46on the articles and stuff
14:47is at one point when all this went down
14:50she found out about the engagement yada
14:51yada and she has john come over they get
14:55together she basically lines things up
14:57to create a one last chance type
15:00situation she confesses his love her
15:02love to him
15:04and you know obviously he's kind of like
15:07sorry girl
15:08but she basically convinces him to sleep
15:10with her one last time right
15:12now this is like before the marriage
15:14after the engagement that type thing
15:16so she convinces him to sleep with her
15:18one last time now john will say that he
15:20was basically like well i thought maybe
15:21it would give her closure you know and
15:24did it to them maybe make things better
15:26and i'm like
15:27um we obviously can
15:30surmise at this point stephanie was
15:32probably thinking this you'll get him
15:34this will convince him that he won't
15:36keep coming back for these cookies but
15:38in fact it wouldn't keep him coming back
15:39for the cookies at all right he was like
15:42no thank you
15:43um and in fact what it would do is it
15:45would open the door
15:47to crazy town and let me tell you what
15:50stephanie was the damn mayor now to
15:52understand
15:54her the way she is the way she thinks
15:56all this stuff we need to also talk
15:58about what she was like as an officer
16:00because i was like yeah honey you're
16:02giving cops a bad name so stephanie
16:05would work her way through her police
16:07training she would you know make the
16:09ranks and all that kind of stuff but she
16:11would start off at the hollywood beat
16:14now
16:15to me this sounded like the kind of
16:17place where you were like putting your
16:19time and paying your dues that kind of
16:21thing it sounded like a rough beat it
16:23sounded like she worked a rough shaft
16:25and you're kind of seeing it all right
16:27that type of situation now she was also
16:30coming in at a time that was like the
16:32after effects of
16:34basically lapd trying to make themselves
16:36more diverse more inclusive
16:38you know
16:39bringing women officers and that kind of
16:41a thing so she was doing what she was
16:44doing during a time where there was
16:46gonna already kind of be like an uphill
16:48battle if you will um so i'll give her
16:50that now stephanie was also very active
16:53on the force like to me i would describe
16:56her as like a cops cop right like she
16:59kind of knew how to schmooze if you will
17:02uh she was like if there was a sports
17:04team she was gonna do it you know she
17:06was gonna you know start this thing over
17:08here and do this and
17:09she was just that kind of she brought
17:11that energy to the whole situation
17:14so
17:15again by doing that this would enable
17:17her to you know get opportunities to
17:20come her way now during the beginning of
17:22this whole situation of her you know
17:24getting on the force yadda yadda she and
17:26john were still you know they're doing
17:27this hookup kind of a thing where he
17:30might come look at watch her play some
17:31games and did it so all that's going on
17:34now the sherry situation is
17:37coming right up it's looming out there
17:39in the future but that's where this
17:41whole gray zone is for stephanie in my
17:43opinion
17:44now what will happen with stephanie also
17:46is then about after a year of doing the
17:48whole hollywood beat thing she would get
17:52on to another beat whatever you want to
17:54call it at club dab now this sounds
17:57literally like a night and day situation
18:00right
18:01to the one she was at like this sounds
18:04like oh my god there's someone
18:06jaywalking will mosey on down there and
18:09get to it later right it sounds like
18:12they it was just like a pushing paper
18:14that kind of a situation now one thing
18:16that stephanie would do
18:18that kind of blows my mind but in a
18:20sense it also really should lighten
18:22things is she would keep like a daily
18:24journal a daily diary that kind of a
18:26situation and she would talk about like
18:28you know basic stuff that happened at
18:30work
18:31um but what it did for me at least is it
18:33showed us how she viewed being a police
18:36officer
18:38how she viewed her job other people that
18:41kind of a thing so as this whole
18:42situation with jon was trying to go down
18:44she did make a few entries in her diary
18:47that were like
18:48okay so on june 4th she did write about
18:50how john was getting married she noted
18:52that it was really bad that her
18:53concentration was like a negative 10.
18:55not soon thereafter she would also write
18:57that she really didn't like working she
18:59was stressed out about john and she
19:00ended up asking for time off now we'll
19:03get back to some more of that in a
19:04minute now other stuff she would write
19:07wasn't so much like you know piecing the
19:09puzzle together in regards to john or
19:11whatever but it was like insight into
19:13how she viewed her job right
19:16to me i got this feeling of her just
19:18kind of being a very entitled person
19:21somebody who viewed her position as an
19:23officer as giving her like privilege
19:26over others um entitlement that kind of
19:30thing now some examples that were noted
19:32in there like one was about she had
19:33received a uh a call about a child abuse
19:36call or something and so on her way she
19:38was flagged down by an officer working
19:40like if it sounds like a movie or
19:41something so she goes in and she even
19:44noted in her journal about like oh they
19:45were serving you i got free orange juice
19:47and da da da and then the call ended up
19:49being cancelled you know i'm kind of
19:51like hey i wouldn't really write that in
19:54any kind of a place that could be read
19:56but whatever not that she was thinking
19:59it would be red but still like the fact
20:00that she felt comfortable enough to put
20:02that there and to do it number two now
20:05another thing that was cited in that
20:07book the lazarus files and this one i
20:09was like okay this is
20:10like that to me is like criminal and
20:12just shows that this i'm like really you
20:14just took your time on a child abuse
20:16call are you serious okay this next
20:19thing is like whoa that's creepy so at
20:22one point stephanie had this personal
20:24trainer
20:25and
20:26so
20:27the way it goes in the book is um he was
20:30at home he had just you know
20:32partaked
20:34and there's knock on his door and he
20:36opens it up and it's two female officers
20:38stephanie in another office are well you
20:40can imagine he was like
20:43now i do think that he was like at first
20:44like you know hey maybe wouldn't get a
20:46little freaky you know or something but
20:48that's not the way it was going but
20:50basically it was clear first of all he
20:52was like i've never given stephanie my
20:53address
20:54like it's clear she looked it up and
20:56whatever she did or whatever
20:58um
20:59he never invited her over she literally
21:01just looked at the dress up and they
21:03just showed up over there now like i
21:05said earlier you know because stephanie
21:06was really good at this good old boy
21:07system
21:08she worked so many different things like
21:10she was in the dare program internal
21:11affairs
21:13numerous different divisions the police
21:15officer you know in in the lapd and
21:17whatnot now when this whole thing went
21:19down where you know the cookie came
21:21crumbling down all that and she was
21:23called she was working art thefts now
21:26that is particular because it's very
21:28public and you're typically going to be
21:30dealing with like rich people or
21:32situations right so there's going to be
21:33like publicity around that that kind of
21:35a thing so that's what she was working
21:38at the time of the interrogation now she
21:40also would always be receiving these
21:42like accolades and stuff like that
21:44but to me it was almost like trophy or
21:47what do you call it participation awards
21:49it was like stuff within the department
21:52but it wasn't like wow she was on her
21:54way to work and stopped and rescued a
21:56kitten on her own free time yeah yeah
21:59you know what i'm saying like it wasn't
22:01anything like that it was like stephanie
22:03takes really good notes
22:05things of that nature so
22:08again i just felt like she was a bully
22:10right i felt like she was a bully as a
22:11police officer and that she looked down
22:13on others that she used her position as
22:16that i mean she would basically just
22:18drive around visit friends run errands
22:21do all this kind of stuff
22:22so it's almost like after she did that
22:24whole year in hollywood
22:26her next stop was i'm kicking my feet up
22:28and i am taking it easy and i think all
22:30of that plays into the things that she
22:32did when she began stalking sherry and
22:36on that note let's talk about a few
22:38incidents that went down in regards to
22:40stalking sherry that i was like these
22:42are pivotal these are scary these are
22:45traumatizing oh my god so sherry was
22:48being stalked by stephanie right and so
22:51like she would see you know stephanie
22:53the grocery store stephanie the gym
22:55stephanie was like showing up
22:58in random places where sherry's at now
23:00sherry would also tell her father at one
23:03point she would say i'm being followed
23:05by somebody who dresses like a boy but
23:08they have these eyes that like
23:11are beady and penetrating and look right
23:13through you now when she said that i was
23:15like
23:16jay
23:17who could that be
23:19so let's talk about the condo that they
23:21lived at so first of all
23:23sherry had this condo right she had
23:26originally lived in it with a roommate i
23:28believe her name was jane
23:29and this is where they lived you had
23:31idiota
23:33or yeah sheri's parents had gotten it
23:35for her that kind of a thing
23:37yet idiot so when jon comes along or
23:39whatever you know her roommate's going
23:42to move out john moves in all this kind
23:44of stuff and eventually what will take
23:46place is the father will deed it over to
23:49sherry and john's was their condo right
23:52so
23:52there's that
23:54and i i just mentioned that because i
23:56guess to me what we're about to talk
23:58about is so
23:59bizarre
24:00but also to me i'm just like
24:03this isn't even like it was john's
24:05long-term place so for stephanie to even
24:08do this which is completely wrong
24:10anyways it's even that more brazen
24:12because i'm like yeah this is more i
24:14look at this more sherry's home right
24:16than than sharing john's like sherry had
24:18been living there so the fact that
24:19stephanie
24:20even felt more comfortable to show up at
24:22the place doing these things i was like
24:24yeah this is absolutely not cool so at
24:27one point stephanie shows up over at
24:30sherry and john's condo and stephanie
24:32has the snow skis with her and she's
24:34basically asking john to wax them
24:37and you can imagine right that sherry
24:40was like uh are you kidding me well john
24:43agrees too right
24:46i'm trying to hold my opinions on some
24:47of the stuff with him and the dynamic
24:49between stephanie but we're gonna have
24:51to sprinkle it throughout
24:54so you can imagine sherry was not happy
24:56about this right and so
24:58there's that that's weird enough
25:00stephanie then comes back to get them
25:02later or whatever now here's my thing so
25:04sofa sidebar okay
25:06the fact that that even took place and
25:09was an option i'm like are you okay i
25:11would have been so po if i was sherry
25:14and she was right
25:17it also
25:19really angers me and john because i'm
25:20like why would you why would you even do
25:23why would you even entertain that you
25:25know that is so unhinged on stephanie's
25:28part
25:29why would you even entertain that to
25:31this woman who you're about to marry who
25:33is so in my opinion out of john's league
25:37in my opinion way
25:39beyond what stephanie could ever hope to
25:41be
25:42as a partner to john right
25:44and so i'm like why would you even do
25:47that it's like kick rocks and get out of
25:49here and don't come back but now also
25:50there was this whole thing with security
25:52at the complex where it's like how you
25:53know she abusing her badge to get in
25:55like what is she doing like it's all
25:57sorts of level of creepy but it gets
26:00worse okay
26:02so
26:03let's talk about the hospital
26:04confrontation
26:05so
26:07there's a day where a woman shows up
26:10at the hospital that sherry works at and
26:12the woman is stephanie
26:14and apparently stephanie shows up in
26:17very skimpy clothing and i mean let's
26:20just go ahead and call it what it is
26:23she was dressed [ __ ]
26:26she was dressed like a dart so remember
26:29earlier how i talked about when you know
26:32stephanie found out about engagement and
26:33she was like asking john to come over
26:35and that's where she was like baby i
26:38love you i'm putting that all on the
26:40line i'm offering my womanhood to you
26:44one more time
26:46please take it
26:48okay so like remember that whole crunchy
26:50thing right so then
26:52after you know he took the goods right
26:54she goes to the hospital where sherry's
26:56working a couple of days later dressed
26:58like a tart we already covered that and
27:00basically tell sherry look
27:03i just had your man
27:04and you know what if your marriage
27:06doesn't work out i'm gonna be waiting
27:07right here to pick up the pieces you
27:09know now remember this when we get into
27:11the interrogation and she's all like
27:14i
27:15was her name sherry
27:17i think did she work in hospital i can't
27:19remember okay because it's gonna become
27:21prevalent so you can imagine poor sherry
27:26is crushed by this right i mean
27:29this goes on like it's traumatizing
27:30enough to have some ex-girlfriend who's
27:32been harassing you show up and say i
27:34just had your man
27:36so but sherry was a decent person she
27:39was good and she forgave john she told
27:41him about it he's like look oh my god i
27:44messed up did it please i don't want our
27:46marriage to end yada yada she didn't she
27:49didn't you know she she was gonna stick
27:51with them so they make it past that now
27:54a couple of months before the main
27:55incident where sherry would lose her
27:57life
27:58another even creepier thing happened
27:59where sherry's at home and all of a
28:01sudden stephanie's in the living room
28:03and stephanie's like oh i'm waiting on
28:04john or whatever and sherry's like you
28:06you've got to go and i mean at that
28:08point this is where you can tell where
28:09i'm like oh yeah whether sherry
28:11sherry claims or it seems or whatever
28:14that she isn't some kind of love
28:15triangle and here's the thing maybe john
28:17was leading her on to that we don't 100
28:20know i mean you can sit here all day
28:21long and say i never considered somebody
28:23a girlfriend and did it
28:24but i'm also like well when she showed
28:26up to your house
28:28to do the ski she let her do that
28:31you rolled around with her one last time
28:33you know to make her feel better so
28:35there's something there right and so
28:38sherry wasn't and i mean sherry found
28:40herself in the love triangle but she was
28:42the complete innocent bystander to this
28:44and i do feel like john kind of you know
28:47whether he meant to or not was playing
28:49both of them and obviously we see how
28:51that ended now sherry was expressing
28:53concerns to people she was talking to
28:55her father about this and whatnot but
28:57remember sherry is somebody who you know
28:59ha this is what i'm doing this is how
29:01it's going to go
29:02you know boom boom boom boom she wasn't
29:04wanting to burden people with other
29:06stuff she was going to handle it you
29:07know she was like from what i understand
29:09like you know what look let me just do a
29:11b and c
29:12for revisit you know that kind of a
29:14thing but i got this you know kind of a
29:16thing
29:17and from what i've read of her and
29:18learned of her through this story
29:21one would probably believe that you know
29:23she just seemed like the type of woman
29:24that was like this is what i want this
29:27is how it's gonna happen and i know how
29:28to make that happen so i would
29:31personally trust her if she said you
29:32know what i've got this
29:34you know i would have no reason not to
29:36but again a lot of times most people
29:38don't know
29:39when someone is as crazy as stephanie
29:41like you aren't expecting that right
29:43like how many of us would be expecting
29:44someone to take it to that level that's
29:46very out of the blue so let's talk about
29:49a more sensitive dynamic of this case
29:52let's talk about the day
29:54that sherry's life was stolen now this
29:57day is february 24th 1986. sadly sherry
30:01would call out of work that day she
30:03caught out of work she stayed home and
30:06so she's at home and john's trying to
30:08contact her all day long right and she's
30:10not answering there's nothing going on
30:12whatever which is odd right
30:15so he comes home from work after work
30:17and
30:18major red flags up right there's like
30:20definitely things are not right first of
30:22all her bmw is missing there's like
30:25broken glass in the garage when john
30:27does make his way inside he will
30:29unfortunately find his wife sherry
30:31lifeless in the living room floor now
30:33later a housekeeper would say that she
30:35had heard like a couple of loud thuds
30:37and then a scream at some point during
30:39the daytime and then things kind of went
30:41quiet now it was very clear that a major
30:44struggle had gone on right there was
30:47stuff broken
30:48things of this nature there was a stereo
30:51equipment stacked up near sherry
30:54now sherry also had a lot of wounds
30:56first of all
30:58she had been shot three times she had
31:00blunt force trauma she had a horrifying
31:03bite mark on her arm we'll talk about
31:06that later
31:07so a major struggle took place
31:10all of this stuff now this is half of
31:12the problem here when it came time for
31:14the investigation
31:16is that it looked like a robbery with
31:18the stereo the car missing
31:20now the only things that were actually
31:23missing from the scene
31:25is the bmw which was the equivalent of
31:27an engagement ring for her
31:29and their marriage license
31:31that is completely bizarre now the
31:34reactions to this of course what you
31:35would expect you know people are
31:37heartbroken they're shocked
31:39john being the husband of course he's
31:40going to be looked into interviewed and
31:42found her body for god's sakes you know
31:45and there's like conflicting stories
31:47that will come out on the stand you know
31:49in
31:50my research and whatnot as to exactly
31:53when he started saying
31:55stephanie's name but john will testify
31:57that within a couple of days he's saying
31:59that you know ex-girlfriend uh lapd
32:02officer stephanie you need to look at
32:04her yeah idiata
32:05um
32:06and the parents will say this as well
32:08we'll get into that just a minute now
32:09the day that this went down there's this
32:11chain of events and the parents were
32:14kind of scratching their heads a little
32:15bit because first of all they weren't
32:17notified by john that this went down it
32:19was hours later that john's parents
32:21notified them now john will say while i
32:23was being interviewed all the craziness
32:24he had idiata but it seems to me like it
32:27set this tone
32:29for
32:31this vibe that went on between
32:34her parents his parents and him the
32:36whole nine yards there was almost this
32:38energy of like his parents wanting to
32:40protect him
32:41from nells but nellis wasn't like trying
32:43to hurt him so it was this very weird
32:45energy now
32:47nelson's day says you know
32:50no i do not believe that he had anything
32:52to do with it i just believe that he
32:53wasn't that forthright coming and some
32:55of the stuff that was going on
32:56sleeping with stephanie so on and so
32:58forth overall this dynamic and this is
33:00my opinion i'm going off speculation
33:02street
33:03reading this learning about sherry
33:05learning about john the dynamics i just
33:08felt like john was in over his head and
33:10what i mean by that
33:11is i think sherry was out of his league
33:14i think john was aware of that
33:15i think he was also aware that
33:18you know i don't think he had anything
33:19to do with it but i think he was also
33:21aware of the feeling of
33:25he knew inadvertently
33:27almost like this like i'm a crappy
33:29boyfriend you know what i'm saying like
33:31i was letting stephanie linger around
33:33keeping that going this could possibly
33:35be something there is this level of
33:37guilt with it and it could even be just
33:39a level of guilt so that wasn't at uh i
33:42should have been home to protect her
33:43which i mean you can't control that like
33:45you know what i'm saying you have no
33:46idea someone's gonna do this so there
33:48just seemed to be this level of that now
33:50maybe he also was afraid it was going to
33:51come out that he had had this affair you
33:53know there's really 100 no telling but
33:56it's just kind of the energy that i get
33:57from it some of sherry's friends will
33:59even see in interviews and whatnot where
34:00they're like you know what it's just you
34:02know knowing sherry if this had happened
34:04to john if the tables were reversed she
34:06would have been advocating for him
34:08banging on doors we want answers what is
34:10going on and they said they just felt
34:12like john kind of eventually just faded
34:14away you know he wasn't knocking the
34:16cops doors down for answers a man by the
34:19name of lyle mayor would be the lead
34:21detective on this case and like right
34:23off the rip okay it was decided this is
34:26a robbery gone wrong
34:27the two men you know two male suspects
34:30is usually what it is but two suspects
34:32or whatever did this there's some huge
34:34long drawn out fight in here and that's
34:37what it was now it did not help the
34:40situation that i think within like 10
34:42days there was a another robbery on the
34:45same street woman held at gunpoint by
34:47two men i mean come on right
34:49so
34:50basically that was like the mo like no
34:52that's what's going on now again like i
34:54said both john and the parents will
34:56adamantly say
34:58right off the rip we were telling him
34:59about stephanie lazarus right off the
35:01rep like that we
35:03we were telling him about them but the
35:05parents at that time didn't know
35:07stephanie's name they just knew an
35:08ex-lapd officer obviously john would
35:11know stephanie's name now mr mayor will
35:14say john never brought up her name and
35:16the parents never did either and the
35:18only one that was brought up was like
35:19months into the investigation now both
35:21john and the parents will say we were
35:22brushed off you know we were told we
35:24were watching too much tv
35:26yada yada like we were brushed off when
35:28we were throwing you know the whole ex
35:30girlfriend lapd officer stephanie that
35:32whole
35:33that whole option you know they just
35:35weren't taken seriously now there would
35:37be a reward amount eventually put up for
35:39this it was in the amount of i believe
35:40ten thousand dollars but even when like
35:42that press release went out it was
35:44geared towards you know this crime where
35:46two men broke into a home so it's almost
35:49like this bias just permeated everything
35:51about the case so when everybody's mind
35:53is like going that way except for some
35:56people behind the scenes that were very
35:58pretty and just like hold on a second
36:00like this situation's been going on over
36:02here and that i mean that's not good
36:04shouldn't we be looking into this now
36:06remember how i said stephanie did those
36:08journals and diaries like during that
36:09time remember i said she made some
36:11things about i can't concentrate yadda
36:13yadda but when she went back to work
36:15which was february 25th so that is
36:17completely suspect um basically she's
36:20like it was a boring day at work and you
36:22know just i mean nothing really out
36:24there there was never anything in her
36:26journals that was like this i'm hiding
36:29some horrible secret or i did this
36:31horrible thing you know or whatever
36:33right
36:34um
36:35so that part's just kind of chilling to
36:38me that it's like okay you take time off
36:40work there is some evidence of
36:43how you're feeling over this man but
36:44then you're just right back in the
36:46saddle now also another thing that would
36:48end up coming out but not until way
36:50later and looked at and again
36:52one thing that's frustrating with this
36:53case is a lot of this information was
36:54clearly there right it was just
36:57seemingly chosen not to be looked at
36:59so and we probably will never get
37:01answers at this point as to
37:03how much of a cover-up there was or how
37:05much of turning a blind eye 13 days
37:09after this went down stephanie lazarus
37:12reported her backup gun a 38 revolver as
37:15being stolen to the santa monica police
37:17department now this is alarming in a
37:20couple of ways first of all an officer
37:22is supposed to let their people know
37:24like my gun's missing whatever this is
37:25her like personal like backup gun or
37:27whatever
37:28um
37:29nonetheless she didn't say anything
37:31about it totally suspect and we'll hear
37:32about this here in a few minutes when we
37:34watch the interrogation right
37:37so
37:38just but doesn't report it to her own uh
37:40you know department or whatever now 38
37:42revolver they would end up figuring out
37:44that this is the type weapon that was
37:45used to take sherry's life now many
37:47people who had relevant information
37:50would just say we were never interviewed
37:51we were never talked to right
37:54like so many of these cases that we see
37:56these cold cases days turn to weeks
37:58weeks turn to months months turn to
38:00years and in this one years turn in to
38:03decades and nothing comes of it no more
38:06information not a day or a minute closer
38:09to finding out who did this to sherry
38:11now another dynamic that i found
38:13interesting as time moved on from this
38:15case is that in 1989
38:18john reunited with stephanie and so he
38:20would hook up with her again now
38:23one of the things that went on with this
38:25i had to have some opinions about this
38:27but before he met up with her like in
38:29hawaii i believe it was he could you
38:31know he consulted with the investigators
38:33whatever and he just want to make sure
38:34like look she has nothing to do with
38:35this she was never a suspect whatever
38:38no not at all you know yadda yadda
38:41so here's my thing with that is i'm just
38:44like if you felt that you even needed to
38:46ask that
38:48like why would you even do that you know
38:50what i'm saying so
38:52and again that's just my opinion i mean
38:54i'm kind of casting judgment on someone
38:56for their actions for that but it just
38:58seems some very bad taste but also what
39:01an event like that tells us is that if
39:03all that's true and you know he reached
39:04out to lyle mayor and was like is she a
39:06suspect you know
39:08that nope and not at all
39:10then
39:12you know that tells us okay so years
39:14after you know what 89 so a few years
39:16after
39:17she wasn't even on the radar and her
39:19name was brought up again you know but
39:21again this is all if this is all true
39:23now even though this like you know
39:25rendezvous whatever this would not be a
39:27long-term thing as usual with these two
39:30and john would end up getting married
39:32having a family and stephanie would end
39:34up marrying um actually another fellow
39:36uh cop his name was scott and she would
39:38end up actually adopting a daughter they
39:40would adopt a daughter but then one day
39:43things changed in 2001 la police chief
39:46bernard c parks the 10th he created the
39:49cold case homicide unit and they began
39:51going through unsolved files for dna
39:54evidence now a criminalist in that
39:56department named jennifer francis she
39:58began going through sherry's file and
40:00she found some interesting things in
40:02this so remember the bite mark that i
40:04told you about on sherry's arm well
40:06there was a swab that was taken from
40:07that and jennifer realizes wait where
40:09like where is the swab right so she
40:12starts going and doing her own little
40:14investigating and
40:16there's no this is one of those things
40:18where you would have to literally just
40:20read it to see how
40:22much of a lightning strike this was that
40:24she was able to find the swab right but
40:27essentially she's researching she's
40:29going you know she knows it should be
40:31here to do that they finally figure out
40:34that it had been left in the corners
40:36freezer for 18 years okay
40:39so
40:40it just blows my mind that even happened
40:42but that's when those things i'm like
40:43yup sherry this is where i love how
40:47situations like this
40:49the victim is yelling from their grave
40:52right they're like this person's not
40:53gonna get away with this and sherry was
40:55fighting
40:56so hard to make sure that stephanie
40:59would come to justice eventually so by
41:012005 they get the results back from this
41:04dna the swap from the bite mark so they
41:06get it back and it comes back to its
41:08female dna now remember this whole time
41:11this is oh we've had two you know male
41:14perps this is the whole case today but
41:16this blows that out the water right so
41:18jennifer takes us back to the powers
41:20that being goes over it and she's
41:21brushed off and it's oh well one of the
41:24robbers could have been a woman and d
41:26and so all this stuff goes back to
41:29storage but again sherry was speaking
41:32from the grave she was not gonna let
41:34this go by by 2009 everything would
41:36start to come crashing down and the
41:38truth would finally begin to rise from
41:41the ashes so 2009 shockingly
41:44you know thankfully the homicide unit at
41:47lapd i guess it was slow there wasn't
41:49that many you know you know what's that
41:51year whatever
41:52so the detectives and stuff are going
41:54through like cold cases yada yada well
41:57lo and behold
41:58shari's is one of those cases and so
42:01some fresh eyes get onto this case file
42:05and they're looking through this and
42:06they're seeing first off right off the
42:08rip like the same stuff that jennifer
42:10had pointed out years before where
42:11they're like um okay hello this dna on a
42:15bite mark matches
42:17or you know is female and this whole
42:19theory is these are two guys that did
42:20this this isn't right now the detective
42:22that was looking through this his name
42:23was jim nuttle and
42:26he's looking through this and again he's
42:27making these conclusions that jennifer
42:29did but she was brushed off for and he's
42:31going it's making him go deeper and
42:33deeper and things are not adding up now
42:36lo and behold guess who's name is all
42:37over this but stephanie lazarus and so
42:40finally someone starts looking at her
42:42name with some seriousness and they go
42:45back to john and you know start
42:46reinterviewing people and whatnot and
42:48john's like oh no
42:49no yeah that's my ex-girlfriend she
42:51didn't do it nope she didn't do it we
42:53already checked her out she didn't do it
42:54again they're looking into this and more
42:56and more things are pointing towards
42:57like well let's we need to look at
42:59stephanie stephanie worked across the
43:01hall from these guys so you can imagine
43:05how tricky they had to be to be
43:07investigating this right so they're
43:09doing all this they finally get the
43:10point look we need to do the dna stuff
43:12right so the investigators have to
43:14devise a way to get dna from her they
43:16want to find out where she's living but
43:17even with that they're like she's been
43:18very slippery about even
43:21figuring out where she lives with her
43:22address
43:24and so through this they figure out what
43:25she's dating you know she's married to
43:27scott over here this whole nine years it
43:29all starts coming out and it's almost
43:31too
43:32small of a world too bizarre it's like
43:34is could this even be true well what
43:36they do is they start staking her out
43:38and following her around all this stuff
43:39and one day her and her little girl go
43:41to costco they eat something while
43:43they're there and stephanie throws away
43:45a cup with a straw and so they go and
43:47they get out of the garbage and they
43:50send it off to be tested for the dna
43:52well i'm gonna go ahead and give you a
43:54couple of hundred bucks if you guessed
43:56what it was it was a match for 200 alex
44:02and so with that being said this draws
44:04us to a part of the video
44:06the damn near took me out the
44:08interrogation so the detectives have
44:10gone to stephanie and they were like hey
44:13look we just arrested this bozo and he's
44:15you know giving out some information
44:17about your art thievery cases we need
44:20you to come down to the jail
44:22and so she's like yeah man yo bro okay
44:24bro yes your bro and so she's gonna go
44:27to the jail with him and they did this
44:28so that she would get rid of her gum
44:30because i mean again i mean this girl
44:31she cried great okay you can just look
44:33at her eyes
44:34so
44:35they go to the jail she has to you know
44:37unweaponize herself or whatever put her
44:38gun out whatever you call it to go in
44:41and this is kind of where this video
44:42picks up right
44:44and so she comes in and they sit her
44:46down and she's in this frame of mind if
44:48she's getting ready to interview someone
44:49about one of her cases
44:50but then they start asking her questions
44:52about john rutten and
44:55from her past or whatever and it's very
44:57confusing to her but you can start to
45:00see where she pieces it all together of
45:03i might be in trouble so what we're
45:04going to do is we're going to view some
45:06clips from the interrogation i'm going
45:07to be offering some thoughts some
45:09opinions some commentary on them now
45:12you're going to see there's a lot of
45:13go-to's that she has in this first of
45:15all everything's a million years ago
45:17secondly she loves pictures
45:20thirdly you know she has this very
45:22selective memory about certain things
45:25and fourthly she is insanely obviously
45:28guilty
45:29and cannot hide it and it's like every
45:33muscle in her face tells on her do you
45:35know john rutin
45:37john
45:40john rutten
45:42oh yeah i went to school with him you
45:43did yeah how long did you know him gosh
45:46i went to school and um
45:48let's see went to ucla
45:501978 i started and
45:54you know
45:55met him
45:56at school at the dorms
45:58um were you guys friends close friends
46:01yeah we're very close friends yeah i
46:03mean what's this all about now at this
46:05point i'm sure she was like what
46:08a part of me wants to wonder
46:10if she was like what did something
46:11happen to him or whatever because
46:13remember she's expecting some criminal
46:15to come in and talk to her about art
46:17thieves or information or whatever so
46:19there's a part of me that wonders like
46:20what she thinks something happened to
46:22john because i do think that she's so
46:24cocky that this was like oh honey i got
46:26away with that we didn't even think
46:27about anymore you know what i'm saying
46:29so
46:30but i do wonder like at what point this
46:33all started to come together for her
46:35okay were you guys just friends or
46:36anything else or yeah we were we were
46:39good friends yeah was there any
46:42relationship or anything to develop
46:43between you guys
46:44yeah i mean we dated uh
46:47you know um i mean is it what's this all
46:50about
46:51now in this part you know i was killing
46:52her where she's just like yeah we dated
46:54we dated you know i met his parents he
46:56never said i was his girlfriend um you
46:59know he made sure never to do things
47:00like go to the grocery store out to
47:02dinner you know because he was afraid i
47:04might actually like him or something
47:06like that but you know in my world i was
47:08special to him okay now for real though
47:12she has to be thinking at this point
47:13like what's up why are they asking me
47:15about like have we dated all this type
47:16stuff and i mean one would hope that she
47:20had gotten over whatever obsessiveness
47:22she had over this man back then
47:25but i mean do you ever when you take it
47:27to the point of taking the life of
47:28someone's
47:30spouse partner whatever um do you ever
47:33get past that well it's relating to
47:37his wife
47:38okay okay did you know her
47:41not really i mean i knew that he got
47:43married years ago uh-huh did you ever
47:45meet her
47:47god i don't know um
47:49do you know who she was or anything
47:51well i
47:52let me think god it's been a long time
47:54ago um
47:57so here's one of the first times in the
47:58interview that we see her line right and
48:00at this point i mean i'm sorry she has
48:02to be
48:03wetting her pants right because
48:06regardless if she thinks she got away
48:08with or whatever she knows that this is
48:09a person that she took their life and
48:12she has gotten away with it for a long
48:13time now i do think that stephanie is
48:15kind of taking this approach of like
48:16well you know i'm just helping my fellow
48:18bros out here you know kind of a vibe or
48:20whatever but nonetheless that's where
48:22they're first here well god
48:25it's been such a long time ago
48:27but again where she's like well i don't
48:28know if i met her i'm like honey you
48:30would remember that you know if you met
48:31somebody i mean we know that she clearly
48:35met her she sought her into her life but
48:37just in the realm of even lying to other
48:40officers i'm just like
48:41yeah this
48:43why would you even think that this would
48:44pass
48:45but she wasn't prepared for it they
48:47completely caught her off card and it
48:50shows i may have met her
48:52um
48:53jeez
48:55you know
48:56yeah
48:57uh well let me see let me ask you you
48:59said you dated john how long did you
49:00guys take
49:03i mean
49:04why are you guys is this something
49:07i mean you said i was going to interview
49:08somebody about art and how you guys are
49:10here's
49:11i mean stephanie here's the situation
49:13it's basically
49:14oh yeah all bets are off she is in fact
49:17quite perturbed she's like you were
49:19supposed to be talking to me about art
49:22thievery but now you're questioning me i
49:24want to speak to the manager right now
49:26please
49:27we
49:28you know we knew that this when we saw
49:30this in the in in this chrono that maybe
49:32you know there was some relationship
49:34there that's what the chrono seemed to
49:35indicate and we didn't want to come up
49:37to you at your desk and ask those kinds
49:39of questions or do anything you know how
49:41up there people can see what's going on
49:43if you go into an interview room or
49:44people are in there getting supplies so
49:46we wanted to afford you some privacy
49:48some confidentiality to talk about this
49:50because we thought it might be you know
49:51something you know you're married to
49:52someone else obviously and so forth and
49:54that you may not want to you know talk
49:56about these things in that setting where
49:57someone you know we don't want the rumor
49:58mill or gossip or any of that kind of
50:00stuff that's fine i mean so we we did
50:02this just as a means to try and speak to
50:04you in just a confidential place where
50:06you you know where where your business
50:07isn't out there for other people and you
50:09know your division
50:10yeah that's been a million years ago i
50:12mean
50:13you know um
50:15[Music]
50:16a hundred percent at this point she
50:20needed to be wearing some depends okay
50:22you can just see the look on her face
50:24transitioning that's one thing that
50:26makes this interview so interesting is
50:28you're watching someone go through all
50:30this range of stuff right
50:33and part of that is this realization of
50:35even before she gets rested that life is
50:37not going to ever be the same like this
50:40whole thing of what do they know and do
50:41that and bringing all this up life has
50:44to be flashing before her very eyes
50:49correct me if i'm wrong because from
50:51what you're telling me you guys dated
50:52while you were in college together right
50:54yeah and probably after college um
50:58i can't
50:59jeez um i swear if you were to play a
51:02drinking game
51:03with this video and you can pick several
51:05things g's um could be one
51:08any reference to pictures any reference
51:11to the flyer that she's gonna mention a
51:13few minutes and you take a shot and i
51:15swear you would probably die
51:17from alcohol poisoning we had long
51:20stopped you know
51:21dating before that so you haven't talked
51:23to him for a long time oh i i think i
51:26haven't talked to him in a long time um
51:28i couldn't even tell you when the last
51:29time i talked to him
51:30um
51:31now another dynamic about this whole
51:33interrogation especially knowing what we
51:35know about it and that we probably need
51:37to just go ahead and figure out is
51:39everyone's definition of the word dating
51:42okay now i get that it is more socially
51:44acceptable to say dating instead of you
51:47know hooking up let's say right but i
51:50can 100 tell you
51:52that
51:53the definition that she has of dating
51:55versus what john's definition is are two
51:58totally different things unless we're
52:01just talking about straight up hooking
52:03up right but we know that's not the case
52:06with stephanie and on that note let's

52:12relationship what did the relationship

52:19it was kind of a weird relationship i
52:21mean we we we dated um i can't say that
52:24he was my boyfriend i don't know that he
52:26would have considered me his girlfriend
52:28so at least we see her being a little
52:30more realistic right you know a little
52:32bit more honest but again it's taken her
52:34a year she has a new life she has a kid
52:36she has a husband right she's moved on
52:38and one would hope
52:40um but this is a little bit more
52:42realistic of you know i don't really
52:43consider my boyfriend well you know
52:44that's a lie right of course she does
52:46she just wanted to take his you know his
52:48uh wife's life over him so that's far
52:51from just somebody who you don't really
52:52consider
52:54someone that you love and once you guys
52:56split were you guys still friends or
52:58kind of you know
53:02friendly not friendly no i don't think
53:04it was not friendly i mean we were
53:06friendly
53:07i know that
53:09we went to hawaii
53:12at one point now as we've seen she was
53:14definitely harboring villains for him
53:16she loved this man she wanted to be with
53:18him and it ate her up that she couldn't
53:20be with him and also she didn't like
53:23measure up to what maybe she perceived
53:26as his standards right because he
53:28wouldn't even like introduce her to his
53:30family as like a girlfriend or whatever
53:32like it was literally just his friend
53:33with benefits so
53:35when we see her here you know where
53:38she's talking about like oh i mean i
53:39guess we kind of did this and oh we went
53:41to hawaii wink wink you know it just
53:44seems like there was this whole enigma
53:46like he was this enigma to her right and
53:50this back and forth and so on and so
53:52forth but then you also have to sit here
53:54and think okay so she's at this point
53:56now where she has this new life and
53:58again i just wonder during this
54:00interrogation this interview
54:02while if she's coming to this
54:03realization of
54:04oh my god like
54:06what i have now is getting ready to be
54:08taken over taken from me because of this
54:11but another thing that we see her do in
54:13this is she starts eliciting all this
54:15random conversation about friend who was
54:18sick and so on and so forth i feel like
54:20she starts pulling from different things
54:22to be like i'm trying to help you all
54:23out as a co-worker oh i have a sick
54:25friend
54:26that kind of thing um another friend of
54:29mine who's actually dying right now
54:31i have to check my pictures um or i'd
54:34say i'd ask craig but my friend greg is
54:36like dying of liver cancer right now
54:37then the detectives move in for the
54:40hard-headed questions had you ever met
54:42his wife
54:44i may have do you know do you remember
54:46her name or anything or
54:47[Music]
54:50um um
54:54or what she did for a living or where
54:56she worked or anything about her well i
54:58think she i'm gonna say i think she was
55:00a nurse a hundred percent she is
55:02envisioning
55:04confronting her the hospital confronting
55:06her in her own living room the snow ski
55:09thing taking her life all that she is
55:12literally picturing the stuff right
55:14and she is going through so many hoops
55:17to make it look like oh god i think i
55:20did was she a nurse i mean i'm just like
55:23this woman has absolutely no chill and i
55:27can't even remember how he said he met
55:29her
55:29uh yeah i mean i i yeah i mean it's been
55:32so long ago well let me ask you did you
55:34go to their wedding
55:35you know no i didn't go to their wedding
55:37um no i don't did not go to their
55:40wedding
55:41um
55:42i couldn't even tell you what year he
55:43got married i mean you know it's been a
55:45million years ago now what she meant to
55:47say in this is hell i know i was not
55:50invited to their wedding
55:52can you imagine
55:55but it also makes me wonder if it was
55:56even a consideration for john you know
55:58what i'm saying like i could almost feel
56:00like should we invite her um but
56:02regardless you know she's trying to play
56:04it off like now i was busy that day i
56:06think i got an invite but nope it was a
56:08million years ago and just in that one
56:10clip how many times did she say a
56:12million years ago you know i don't
56:14understand why you're talking about some
56:16guy dated a million years ago well do
56:17you know what happened to his wife yeah
56:19i know she got killed now she spit that
56:21out real quick like oh yeah i know she
56:23got killed you know and i'm just like oh
56:25my god i mean again you know she's
56:28envisioning those moments like when
56:30she's talking about it and just trying
56:32to play it off so hard you know when
56:33something happens it's like major
56:35adrenaline rush or something like that
56:36and your face feels like it goes down i
56:38feel like that happened to her very
56:40early in this interview interrogation
56:43but it was like extra and it was almost
56:46like at a certain point her nervous
56:48system detached from her face and like
56:51everything was just running in two
56:53opposite directions
56:55what did you hear about that
56:57i guess i saw a poster at work um
56:59i'm sure i spoke to him about it

57:03i think i spoke to another friend of his
57:05about it
57:07um
57:08and how did you first learn about that
57:11jeez
57:12now personally i would think this is the
57:14kind of response i would have thought of
57:16to have heard from her
57:17if she was not guilty and all this yeah
57:19you know what i reached out to him to
57:20let him know you know what i left i want
57:22to help catch the person that did this
57:24you know what i'm saying i mean she's an
57:26lapd officer for god's sakes right
57:28so this whole part of i might have
57:30talked to him you know i'm just like
57:32yeah honey this is not she's very lucky
57:36she had either people looking out for
57:38her and turning a blind eye when this
57:39originally happened or helping cover it
57:42up whatever it was
57:44uh because these people saw right
57:46through all this and you think you
57:48thought you said you thought his wife
57:49was a nurse you have any idea where she
57:50was working at the time or
57:52did he ever mention that to you was it a
57:54hospital or a doctor's office i'm sure
57:56he must have mentioned it now that
57:57you're bringing that up i think she
57:59worked at a hospital somewhere and yeah
58:01i may have met her at a hospital um i
58:04may have talked to her once or twice

58:13now we've gone from this like oh i think
58:16you know i might know the wife and dad
58:18too well i might have met her at the
58:20hospital might have taught her there a
58:22couple of times or more or few were do
58:25i'm just like honey please
58:27one thing that surprises me about this
58:29is for a cop that got so many
58:30participation
58:31trophies right that she is still talking
58:33to these dudes at this point okay she's
58:36been a cop but she'll kind of throw out
58:37there like yeah gonna 26 years later
58:40right and i'm just like honey you should
58:43100 at this point like what is going on
58:46why are you talking to me like this is
58:48what's up you know what i'm saying but
58:50she like reverts back and forth to this
58:53why why are we here this was a million
58:55years ago let me pretend to try and help

58:58it's very odd and again i think she's so
59:01caught off guard it's like multiple
59:05systems in her they ain't all working
59:07together no more

1:00:40evidence like
1:00:42i would have gone with that i don't
1:00:44remember i don't remember like
1:00:46at minimum right you know but she's
1:00:48still just like she's going back and
1:00:50forth it's just so interesting to me how
1:00:52much they caught her off guard i mean
1:00:54and thank god they did i i don't think
1:00:56we ever socialized um
1:00:58you know uh he'd still call me um i
1:01:01can't say that i would i mean if he's
1:01:02married i don't know that i would have
1:01:04called him i mean maybe who knows i you
1:01:06know i don't know it's been a million
1:01:07years ago i love how now she acts all
1:01:10prim and proper like it would just be
1:01:12blasphemous to think of her calling this
1:01:14married man i would love to know what
1:01:17john thought when he watched this
1:01:19interrogation where she's like talking
1:01:22about like him but he was married and
1:01:23all this i'm just like oh honey please
1:01:27as if she wasn't calling and begging for
1:01:30his oscar minor wiener
1:01:32but you you don't you're not sure where
1:01:34he moved to after he got married
1:01:36no idea i never went over to visit him
1:01:38or i don't think i mean i don't think so

1:01:47she looks like a dog that got a hold of
1:01:49like one of those big bone things you
1:01:51can get the pet store it is just

1:01:57just aside from her facial expressions

1:02:02so this is the part where we talked
1:02:03about earlier remember john they got
1:02:04married john moved into sherry's place
1:02:07right
1:02:08she knows she's been there she broke
1:02:10into the damn place multiple times right
1:02:12killed her and one of them you know now
1:02:14of course she's not going to want to
1:02:15admit to that but it's just one of those
1:02:16things where i'm like
1:02:18again
1:02:19she's been a cop for over 20 years she
1:02:22should know that they know this stuff
1:02:23and now there's a reason they're asking
1:02:24her this stuff right
1:02:26and it's
1:02:27it's so interesting to see how even a
1:02:29cop who's probably done these same
1:02:31techniques
1:02:32folds under this kind of pressure but
1:02:34you don't remember specifically ever
1:02:35going over to visit him or visit them
1:02:37and where wherever he moved when he left
1:02:39roscoe
1:02:40i i i don't i don't know i don't think
1:02:42so but okay you know
1:02:45i don't want to say no i don't think so
1:02:46and then he says oh yeah she came over
1:02:48for something drop something off
1:02:50you know i
1:02:52i'm i don't know so she 100 percent is
1:02:54remembering the ski situation there
1:02:56right like she 100 knows that she's
1:02:58covering her trash
1:03:00oh yeah i remember i dropped my skis off
1:03:02and asked him to wax him real deep and
1:03:06hard
1:03:07after uh
1:03:08john's wife died and he said you may
1:03:11have been talking to him did your
1:03:13relationship
1:03:14start up again i would say no
1:03:17um
1:03:19at this point they're trolling her okay
1:03:21they're 100 drawing her they know the
1:03:23answer to that question they're like
1:03:25we're gonna really just cut her to the
1:03:27bone to see what she thinks because
1:03:29after all this
1:03:30she ain't with him do you know what the
1:03:32circumstances worse regarding her death

1:03:45was a burglary or something
1:03:47uh yeah it's i mean it's been so many
1:03:49years i i mean i can faintly
1:03:51think that i may have saw a flyer yeah

1:03:56you know um i mean that's why i say if
1:03:59somebody had called me
1:04:01i may not have known what her last name
1:04:03was i may have i mean maybe if you told
1:04:05me i would remember it
1:04:07again a thousand percent she is
1:04:08remembering the day that she took
1:04:10sherry's life
1:04:11period end of damn story she is sitting
1:04:13there doing that acting completely i
1:04:15think it was a burglary
1:04:17you know and i'm just like
1:04:19again even if you take it out of context
1:04:21of like what we're watching here now to
1:04:23sit here and think like how do you not
1:04:26remember some of this stuff here

1:04:29you know what i'm saying like even if it
1:04:30wasn't for
1:04:32taking out the bad stuff that she did
1:04:34the cherry right or the stalking all
1:04:35that it's like these are things this is
1:04:37a significant person you would remember
1:04:39some chunks of this but be like i don't
1:04:41remember how that person died really

1:05:24up all these whole memories no i kind of
1:05:26dust off the cup you know
1:05:28um
1:05:29she is getting completely flustered here
1:05:32now look now that y'all are bringing up
1:05:33all this stuff i do remember dressing up
1:05:35like a tart and going to the hospital
1:05:37and saying i take her man i don't know
1:05:39how i forgot about that
1:05:41i mean come on okay i mean this is the
1:05:44part where i'm gonna just slap the damn
1:05:46cups and be done with it i mean
1:05:49seriously
1:05:50so but you can tell she's getting
1:05:52strained because they're putting the
1:05:54pressure on she is in i mean i'm trying
1:05:56to honestly sit here and imagine what it
1:05:58would be like to be in her situation
1:05:59right now
1:06:00where you're sitting
1:06:02in this thing you she has to know what's
1:06:04coming down the pipeline right she can't
1:06:06be this stupid but maybe she is and i
1:06:08don't think this is she's stupid but she
1:06:10just 100 think she got away with this
1:06:13and now thank god it's turning out to be
1:06:15different at one point i mean he may
1:06:18have been dating her or i don't know
1:06:21maybe he was married i don't even
1:06:22remember
1:06:23and i'm like you know what why are you
1:06:25calling me if
1:06:27you're either dating her living with her
1:06:28married her because i honestly don't
1:06:30remember the time frame um and i'm like
1:06:32come on knock it off and i'm i'm now i'm
1:06:34thinking i put me i may have gone to and
1:06:35say hey you know what
1:06:37you know what is he dating you he's but
1:06:39he's bothering me
1:06:41um and so i'm thinking that we had a
1:06:42conversation about that
1:06:44um one or two maybe i i you know i it
1:06:49could have been three i don't want to
1:06:50say i had three conversations with her
1:06:52like i didn't go to work or
1:06:54at their at their house or no i'm
1:06:56thinking that i'm
1:06:57you know he obviously must have told me
1:06:58where she worked i'm thinking it was a
1:07:01hospital somewhere
1:07:03in l.a and i just i mean i could have
1:07:05been
1:07:06again what year was that where was i
1:07:08working
1:07:09um
1:07:10that last picture of her face again she
1:07:14is just melting down i mean look at the
1:07:17deterioration right so now she's saying
1:07:20yeah you know what i might have had this
1:07:21conversation i might have you know he's
1:07:23sitting here contacting me and again i
1:07:25would love to know his reaction to this
1:07:26you know because she's sitting here
1:07:28trying to pin it on him and i'm saying
1:07:29honey you were begging him for it
1:07:31begging him for it and so then the
1:07:34audacity of her to sit here and play it
1:07:35off like she went to sherry to tell her
1:07:37what her man was doing you tell your man
1:07:39to knock it off he's contacting me and
1:07:42yeah yeah yeah and i'm just like oh i
1:07:45mean come on
1:07:46the these detectives are doing such a
1:07:48great job because they are so even kill
1:07:51like they have the dna they know all
1:07:53this stuff already right and they're
1:07:55just being so
1:07:57about it because it's angry and to watch
1:07:59i mean how this is like from 2009 right
1:08:01i mean i'm not even personally involved
1:08:03with these people and it's angering to
1:08:05watch knowing the truth on our side
1:08:07right so kudos to them when you said
1:08:10like hey you know he's calling me he
1:08:11needs to knock it off or what have you i
1:08:13mean was that was that civil was there i
1:08:15mean oh no there was not i don't think
1:08:16there was anything it was if the
1:08:17conversation lasted uh uh a few minutes
1:08:20so i can't even remember and what is it
1:08:21like you know we went out to lunch or
1:08:22anything right but there was no like
1:08:24arguments or fights or you didn't get
1:08:26heated or anything like that not that i
1:08:28recall no i mean
1:08:30no not that i recall now i mean and
1:08:33again i keep going back to this but
1:08:35it's so clear at this point which she
1:08:37doesn't realize that it looks like me at
1:08:39least to me i'm sure these detectives i
1:08:41mean now she's sitting here remember the
1:08:43conversation she remembers there was no
1:08:44argument there it was civil according to
1:08:46her which we know is a lie
1:08:48right so her selective memory during
1:08:51this it's just that facade is all gone
1:08:53now of course they know this right
1:08:55that's clear for them to say she is
1:08:57probably completely numb with adrenaline
1:08:59like it has to be going through her mind
1:09:02that her life is over with
1:09:03so you didn't have any problems with her
1:09:05then you didn't have any issues with her
1:09:07no i mean but let me let me ask you
1:09:09it seems like you didn't have any issue
1:09:11now did she have an issue with you as
1:09:13far as because now you're telling her
1:09:16hey you don't have to stop calling that
1:09:18you know she's like
1:09:19you know you figure she'd be thrilled by

1:09:25i don't know i mean geez i don't know
1:09:28i cannot with these facial expressions
1:09:30right but no no issues with me she liked
1:09:33me coming around stalking her showing up
1:09:36to the gym all that kind of stuff i'm
1:09:37just like really so but i mean of course
1:09:40stephanie's gonna lie about this right
1:09:42you know maybe the hospital was on my
1:09:44way to work in hollywood
1:09:45i mean that's kind of sounding familiar
1:09:48um
1:09:49would you have gone on duty
1:09:51oh no i'm sure i wouldn't if i no i'm
1:09:54i'm pretty good about not doing stuff
1:09:56you know i mean now i'm not saying that
1:09:58you know you haven't done stuff on duty
1:10:00but i i i would have i mean i would have
1:10:03been working with somebody okay you know
1:10:05so now the funny thing about this is
1:10:07like not only is she lying about this
1:10:09stuff but she's like i don't know i was
1:10:10real good about doing that don't do
1:10:12stuff on duty you know and it's just
1:10:14like honey you literally left a diary
1:10:16talking about visiting friends going
1:10:18grocery shopping picking oranges crazy
1:10:21stuff everything but
1:10:24being a cop right this is what she was
1:10:26doing while she was on duty so it's just
1:10:27funny that she takes this high road but
1:10:29of course at this point this is what she
1:10:31would do i mean that's sounding familiar
1:10:34i mean that's now that you guys are
1:10:35bringing this stuff up um
1:10:37i mean it sound that sounds familiar
1:10:39but again i mean
1:10:41you know
1:10:43what's i mean what's this got to do with
1:10:44me dating him and you know her getting
1:10:46killed i mean i i don't you know i don't
1:10:49have anything to do with it and
1:10:51you got something that's somebody said
1:10:53you know whatever i mean now you see how
1:10:56she slid that in there of i don't have
1:10:58anything to do with it i mean you got
1:10:59something
1:11:01somebody says
1:11:02you know she is freaking out it's a
1:11:05total fishing expedition right total
1:11:07fishing expedition and she'll do this
1:11:09throughout this interview because at
1:11:11this point again like i said she knows
1:11:13right she knows that something
1:11:15she's trying to figure out what they
1:11:17know and she's dotting her answers along
1:11:19the way but again her facial expressions
1:11:22just instantly give her way let me ask
1:11:24did the detectives ever reach out to you
1:11:26no no one's ever talked to me i don't
1:11:28think anybody ever talked to me about
1:11:30about him um it seems like
1:11:32well i i hate him now this is the part
1:11:35that's just a slap in the damn face
1:11:37right after all
1:11:38that her parents said john said
1:11:41regardless of when it was set whatever
1:11:43look in the sherry look at the sherry
1:11:44looking sherry your ex-girlfriend did
1:11:46that and now we sit here years later
1:11:49and stephanie is saying
1:11:53stephanie's sitting here saying
1:11:54um
1:11:56no
1:11:56no one ever did she looks just as
1:11:58surprised you know like she was
1:12:00expecting them to have talked to her you
1:12:02know again if this is true we don't know
1:12:04right uh but regardless it does seem for
1:12:06the narrative that nobody was really
1:12:07willing to even consider
1:12:09that she or an ex you know whoever this
1:12:12you know ex-lapd girlfriend was had
1:12:14something to do with it well after he
1:12:16hooked up with uh with sherry
1:12:19do you know uh where they were living no
1:12:22you asked me that already
1:12:24and i said well obviously you were
1:12:25living in van nuys division yeah
1:12:28um

1:12:31i mean i you know again i
1:12:33yo did he ever give me the address
1:12:36maybe now it's interesting to see how
1:12:38cocky she is and calling them out right
1:12:41to where she's just like you already
1:12:43asked me that like she called them right
1:12:45and again this is where she's becoming
1:12:47more clear this cat and mouse dynamic
1:12:48because she knows
1:12:50she's a hundred percent like somebody is
1:12:52on to me
1:12:54this vibe is going on you know that
1:12:56whole nine yards but again it's just
1:12:58this whole
1:13:00cockiness of it that's just very
1:13:02alarming to watch but now we also need
1:13:04to discuss
1:13:05this last pack so as far as for social
1:13:08events or anything i mean it's
1:13:11yeah she burps throughout this and she's
1:13:12just like yeah boys y'all know man i'm
1:13:14gonna kick my shoes off get comfy and uh
1:13:17let one rip regarding this issue with
1:13:19john
1:13:20to you know kind of like hey you know
1:13:22what's gonna happen here with this thing
1:13:24but would this ever have followed up to
1:13:26her house when you went to talk to her
1:13:28to say hey you know what
1:13:30i don't even know that i knew where they
1:13:31lived i you know that's what i'm saying
1:13:34i don't
1:13:34if i knew where they lived and i'd been
1:13:36there if it was for something social
1:13:39i'd i would i'm i'm
1:13:40and i can't see how many times i i saw a
1:13:42face to face
1:13:43you know he lived on roscoe did i ever
1:13:45see her there
1:13:46i don't know i mean
1:13:48i may have seen her at his apartment on
1:13:50raw scope now you can tell that they're
1:13:52tightening the screws on her right and
1:13:54she's again getting kind of frustrated
1:13:55with it
1:13:57but also not wanting to show her cards
1:13:59but unfortunately for her
1:14:01lucky for sherry
1:14:02she's already done this because they've
1:14:04already worn her down to admitting
1:14:05things before right so they know
1:14:08and she should know that they know she's
1:14:10withholding information you know what
1:14:12i'm saying so they're going to keep
1:14:14doing this though but you didn't have
1:14:16any issues with her right
1:14:18no i mean
1:14:19you know obviously if he was dating me
1:14:21and dating her i probably said hey pick
1:14:24or something you know
1:14:25back then um
1:14:28so again just like i said the more they
1:14:30wear her down the more so stuff comes
1:14:32out about her story so now it's well i
1:14:35mean i might have told him to pick one
1:14:37of us and this is my thing i'm like oh

1:14:40she's the one married to him okay he
1:14:42dumb picture okay you know it won't
1:14:46you know that's just where i'm like
1:14:48honey he did that he moved on he tried

1:14:50you know this is that but then can we
1:14:53also just talk about the last facial
1:14:55expression she made this is my imagine
1:14:57how scary she would be
1:14:59dealing with her as like a citizen like
1:15:01say she pulled you over you know god
1:15:03forbid she was arresting you something
1:15:05for major i bet she is scary as hell
1:15:08you know what i'm saying like i bet that
1:15:10she had this like completely like evil
1:15:13aspect to her what else to tell you well
1:15:15one of the concerns i have looking at
1:15:17some of the notes is uh
1:15:19some of sherry's friends said that
1:15:22you and her were having a problem
1:15:24because of the john situation

1:15:36recall if he did tell me where he met

1:15:55the facial gymnastics of that part

1:16:00so i mean first of all you saw when he
1:16:02first said that you know she got real
1:16:03serious like who said what she knew they
1:16:05were going over the kill or whatever and

1:16:53and again i ain't no doctor i ain't no
1:16:55lawyer any of that stuff but just you

1:16:57psych when i went over here it's
1:16:59fascinating to see the meltdown she's
1:17:00having right and again this whole thing
1:17:03i don't think so

1:17:06keep remembering this stuff right she
1:17:08knows and they know that she knows you
1:17:09know that's what's also fascinating
1:17:12but just the other layer to us find that
1:17:14she's a cop

1:17:19over yeah come on over having a barbecue

1:17:39you frozen you know how the whole thing

1:17:46is a prime damn example but again these
1:17:49questions you know they had to be just
1:17:51cutting her to the bone
1:17:53you know they didn't even want to have
1:17:55you over for a barbecue now another
1:17:57thing that is interesting too is her
1:17:59absolute chokehold throughout this
1:18:02interview on taking pictures you know
1:18:05it's been i'd have to go almost go back
1:18:07and look at pictures because i take
1:18:09pictures i mean i usually when i have i
1:18:11go to functions i have ten thousand
1:18:13pictures okay i'm a picture nut

1:18:23god only knows with facebook did they
1:18:25have facebook back then i don't think
1:18:27they did 2009 did they maybe so i don't
1:18:30know i think they did regardless can you

1:18:34that we talked about
1:18:36where
1:18:37she had the backup gun and she reported
1:18:39it stolen in the whole nine yards and
1:18:40that was the murder weapon and all that
1:18:42let's see what they say about that i had
1:18:44a gun that was stolen
1:18:46uh i had other stuff that was stolen
1:18:49not your duty was it
1:18:51no
1:18:53um has it ever recovered
1:18:55i don't no no i don't think so not that
1:18:58i know of never been notified no now you
1:19:00know right there she was like oh my god
1:19:02what if they have the murder weapon what
1:19:04if they have the murder weapon right
1:19:05because she's like i hope it wasn't
1:19:06recovered it's in the bottom of the
1:19:08ocean right now that's what she's really
1:19:10thinking another thing that's
1:19:11frustrating with that part is the
1:19:13detectives will say that all that
1:19:14information was readily in this in the
1:19:17file whatever that she had reported this
1:19:19gun missing it was a 38 that was the
1:19:22same type weapon used in the crime so i
1:19:24mean again these are the things that
1:19:25were overlooked whether purposely or
1:19:27unintentionally we don't know
1:19:30but they were right there for whoever
1:19:31wanted to see them where did that happen
1:19:34when your gun was taken

1:19:46now the way she slides that last part in
1:19:48there of i'm sure you guys must know
1:19:50so again she knows what again she's
1:19:53tinkering with them right she's playing
1:19:55cat and mouse she's fishing for what
1:19:57they know but she's also just trying to
1:19:58be cocky you know i'm sure you guys know
1:20:01i mean why even say that
1:20:03especially when you know you're guilty
1:20:04right i mean it's just and it's very
1:20:06interesting to see i would love to know
1:20:08what she's going through in her mind
1:20:10right now to try and play all this off
1:20:12like is that what she's thinking she's
1:20:13still able to do and this is an incident
1:20:15where you showed up you weren't supposed
1:20:18to show up

1:20:21things got heated
1:20:22at his house yes

1:20:31so now all bets are off they're going in
1:20:33for the kill they are they've got her

1:20:40try to escape first

1:21:05i fought with her so so now i mean i get
1:21:08getting the jump of the leap
1:21:11excuse me i haven't eaten um they're
1:21:14saying okay i fought with her so i must
1:21:15have killed her yeah
1:21:17basically because that's essentially
1:21:19what happened right so
1:21:21again she had to let one rip real quick
1:21:23she's getting a little excited thank god
1:21:25it didn't come out of the other hand but
1:21:28on the same note here i'm just like
1:21:31she 100 knows that she's been found out
1:21:34right like she knows that somebody has
1:21:36talked and all this stuff and did it
1:21:40so many years later right that's what
1:21:42makes it so interesting and so
1:21:43satisfying so you often you don't recall
1:21:46ever going into her house and
1:21:48having words and
1:21:49physically
1:21:51you know no attacking her or attacking
1:21:53you
1:21:54no nothing like that no i mean that's no
1:21:58no
1:21:59no
1:22:00they're just warming her up for the
1:22:01grand finale area okay they are priming
1:22:04her she is primed and they are ready to
1:22:06bounce you know as they processed
1:22:08everything they did the best they could
1:22:10at that time and they looked at a lot of
1:22:11a lot of people and different things in
1:22:13this case
1:22:14and you're right i mean if you guys are
1:22:15claiming that i'm a suspect then you
1:22:17know i i got a problem with you know
1:22:19with that okay okay
1:22:22so
1:22:23you know if you're if you're doing this
1:22:24as an interrogation you're saying hey
1:22:26i'm a suspect well now i got a problem
1:22:28with you know now you're accusing me of
1:22:30this
1:22:31is that what you're is that what you're
1:22:32saying
1:22:33again yeah you're totally a suspect
1:22:36honey
1:22:37maybe this deep into the interview is
1:22:39probably the wrong time to be saying
1:22:40those words but i mean comma i mean how
1:22:43would you guys like it if the tables
1:22:44were turned on you i understand no um
1:22:47oh that's what we're telling you i mean
1:22:48you're free to go whenever you want if
1:22:49this makes you uncomfortable and you
1:22:51want to be able to now you're starting
1:22:52to make me uncomfortable like at this
1:22:54point she became uncomfortable i'm just
1:22:56like are you serious like it took this
1:22:58long again the fact that she's a cop i
1:23:00mean my god come on but then also how
1:23:04look at how condescending and cocky she
1:23:06is well how would y'all like if the
1:23:07tables return and i'm just sitting here
1:23:09and i'm like
1:23:10you know you killed the woman i mean
1:23:12you're sitting here envisioning this
1:23:14like it blows my mind you know if we
1:23:17asked you for a dna swab would you be
1:23:19willing to give us one
1:23:21maybe
1:23:23because now now

1:23:25because now i'm thinking i probably need
1:23:27to talk to a lawyer
1:23:29okay i mean
1:23:31what i because i know how this stuff
1:23:32works okay don't get me wrong you're
1:23:34right i have been doing this a long time
1:23:35and i wish i had been recording this
1:23:37because because now it sounds like you
1:23:40know there's
1:23:41you know you're selling these people
1:23:42saying i'm fighting with her and now it
1:23:45sounds like you're trying to you know
1:23:47i've been doing this a long time
1:23:49okay and and now it almost sounds like
1:23:50you're trying to pin something on me
1:23:52she's been doing this for a long time
1:23:54you know now i do need a lawyer you know
1:23:56and i'm just like yeah i mean it is what

1:24:00you know again these guys did such a
1:24:01great job
1:24:02at walking her into this now of course
1:24:03she doesn't know this point they already
1:24:05got you dna a philly animal you know

1:24:14number one and two at the same time okay
1:24:16she is done her britches are finished

1:24:22that somebody would be blame saying that
1:24:24i did this i mean we had a fight so i
1:24:26went and killed her i mean come on
1:24:28that's yeah we're shocked too honey okay

1:25:50unfortunately for miss stephanie things
1:25:52didn't quite go as planned that day for
1:25:54her
1:25:55but don't worry that's not the last
1:25:57we'll see of those crazy eyes

1:26:01i understand you have reached a verdict
1:26:03in this matter is that correct
1:26:05all right please provide the verdict to
1:26:06the
1:26:07people of the state of california versus
1:26:10stephanie eileen lazarus case number ba
1:26:14357-423
1:26:17we the jury and above entitled action
1:26:19find the defendant stephanie eileen
1:26:21lazarus
1:26:22guilty of the crime of murder of sherry
1:26:24rasmussen in violation of penal code
1:26:27section 187 a a felony as charged in
1:26:31count one of the information
1:26:33in march 2012 stephanie lazarus was
1:26:35convicted of the murder of sharia
1:26:37rasmussen she was sentenced to 27 years
1:26:40now she would eventually appeal the
1:26:42conviction she said that the search
1:26:43warrant that they used for her journal
1:26:45where she talked about john and all that
1:26:46kind of stuff that it was improperly
1:26:48granted now another really hard pill to
1:26:51swallow for this case is the fact that
1:26:53first of all she was allowed to retire
1:26:55like after this took place after the
1:26:57arrest and all that kind of stuff took
1:26:58place right so she was allowed to retire
1:27:00and she gets her retirement her pension
1:27:04to the tune of almost 65 000
1:27:07a year now sherry's parents would go on
1:27:09to sue the lapd as well as stephanie and
1:27:12let's be very clear on this part they
1:27:14were not doing this for money they were
1:27:16not doing this for any of that they
1:27:18wanted accountability and they wanted
1:27:19answers right
1:27:21so they were already doing they already
1:27:23have money right they didn't need their
1:27:24money so
1:27:26they did that they wanted accountability
1:27:28they wanted answers now they would not
1:27:30be able to follow through assuming the
1:27:32lapd and went to the supreme court of
1:27:34california and they were like we're not
1:27:35going to uphold this
1:27:36that never went through however they did
1:27:39end up getting a judgment with stephanie
1:27:40i believe it was like 10 million dollars
1:27:43now stephanie of course has appealed
1:27:44this and what not now stephanie is
1:27:46sitting in an institution for women in
1:27:48california she obviously is still
1:27:51claiming her innocence
1:27:53she will be able to go up for parole do
1:27:54i think she'll ever get out personally i
1:27:56don't think so i can't imagine and she
1:27:59might very well you know die of natural
1:28:01causes before that ever happens you know
1:28:03what i'm saying she wasn't young when
1:28:04she went in there
1:28:05so
1:28:06we'll see now here's some of my thoughts
1:28:09on this do i think it was a cover-up
1:28:11i think that a lot of people looked in a
1:28:13lot of different ways i think that it
1:28:14was very early decided that this was
1:28:16going to be a certain thing it was two
1:28:18robbers another thing that took place is
1:28:21stephanie worked in some of these pre
1:28:23these precincts these districts where
1:28:25the files were kept for this so when
1:28:27they started going through this they
1:28:29were seeing that some stuff was missing
1:28:31i 100
1:28:33i 100 think stephanie gained access to
1:28:36some of the evidence and got rid of it
1:28:38again i 100 think that sherry's
1:28:41determination
1:28:42stuck with her even in wherever she went
1:28:44after this life and spoke from the grave
1:28:48i mean that whole thing about the the
1:28:50swab being lost for 18 years i mean come
1:28:53on you know what i'm saying and so
1:28:55that's one of the things that
1:28:56again i hate that sherry lost her life
1:28:58in this
1:28:59but the silver lining i guess you could
1:29:01say is that she was able to come back
1:29:04and get justice and even though
1:29:06stephanie 100 probably i got away with
1:29:09this i have a new life the woman who in
1:29:11her world took her man from her
1:29:14also took her new life from her and for
1:29:16me that is just poetic justice so again
1:29:20my heart goes out to sherry's family her
1:29:22loved ones her friends all these people
1:29:24that had the blessing and grace to know
1:29:27this wonderful woman i really appreciate
1:29:29everybody sitting here hanging out with
1:29:30me watching this i'll be coming up with
