- 0:00this video is brought to you by
- 0:02brilliant the general election is over
- 0:04Parliament has MPS again the government
- 0:07is formed for many parties their next
- 0:09job is to figure out exactly how they
- 0:11want to operate in Parliament who should
- 0:13be in what position within the party
- 0:15which causes they want to Champion and
- 0:17exactly how they want to influence the
- 0:19government for the conservatives though
- 0:21they have an even more immediate concern
- 0:24who will lead them through this period
- 0:25of opposition so in this video we're
- 0:27going to have a look at exactly how the
- 0:29Tories set to choose their leader the
- 0:31key dates and who appears to be in the
- 0:34best position to actually win

- 0:46be notified when we release new videos
- 0:49now being in opposition is no easy task
- 0:52especially if you've just come from
- 0:53governing unlike the Prime Minister the
- 0:55leader of the opposition gets very
- 0:57little media attention they're not
- 0:59taking as serious on policy matters and
- 1:01their actions are usually summed up by
- 1:03the press as simply opposing the
- 1:05government for opposition's sake or for
- 1:07simply agreeing with the government
- 1:09adapting to the lack of power and the
- 1:11lack of attention can be tough and can
- 1:14make some parties impatient for another
- 1:16election and often a new leader in the
- 1:19case of the Tories there were some
- 1:21arguments that a shorter leadership
- 1:22election would be preferable part of
- 1:25this was probably impatience but part of
- 1:27it was probably also a desire to
- 1:29maintain what I've party Unity survive
- 1:31the general election campaign longer
- 1:34leadership elections allow candidates to
- 1:36attack each other publicly for longer
- 1:38making it difficult for the party to
- 1:39come back together afterwards however
- 1:42there are also some problems with a
- 1:44shorter leadership election which led
- 1:46some to argue for a longer one shorter
- 1:48leadership elections pushed the party to
- 1:50act impulsively with those voting not
- 1:52having the time to properly weigh up
- 1:54their options we saw this with a 2022
- 1:57leadership election in which the final
- 1:59two candidates were selected in roughly
- 2:01only a week this helped the Front
- 2:03Runners which included Liz truss reach
- 2:05the final two as other candidates simply
- 2:07didn't have the time to build momentum
- 2:10now the exact details of any leadership
- 2:12election are determined by the 1922
- 2:14committee as stipulated in the
- 2:16conservative party's Constitution for
- 2:18our International viewers the 1922
- 2:20committee is the name given to the group
- 2:22of backbench conservative MPS up until
- 2:25the general election this year the 1922
- 2:28committee was led by S gra Brady who
- 2:30during his tenure helped to steer the
- 2:32party through all kinds of crises with
- 2:35him stepping down as an MP at this
- 2:36year's election though a new 1922
- 2:39committee chairman was needed as such
- 2:42the 1922 committee organized a
- 2:43leadership election firstly for
- 2:45themselves on the understanding that the
- 2:47winner would determine the overall terms
- 2:50of the party's leadership election only
- 2:52two candidates stood for the position
- 2:54Bob Blackman and Jeffrey Clinton Brown
- 2:57after a somewhat messy election in which
- 2:59members of the 22 committee complain
- 3:01that the voting ended earlier than they
- 3:03originally planned meaning that they
- 3:05were unable to cast their own vote but
- 3:07Blackman came out Victorious after a lot
- 3:09of debate in the party Blackman came to
- 3:11the conclusion that a longer election
- 3:13was preferable as we outlined earlier
- 3:16this should force his colleagues to
- 3:17think carefully about their decision the
- 3:20rough outline of the leadership election
- 3:22is as follows in order to be nominated a
- 3:25candidate needs the backing of 10 of
- 3:26their colleagues the deadline for
- 3:28nominations was on Monday the 29th of
- 3:31July at 2:30 p.m. any candidate that met
- 3:34this threshold now has the month of
- 3:36August to try and convince their
- 3:37colleagues that they should lead the
- 3:39party then between the 4th and the 11th
- 3:42of September Tory MPS will Whittle down
- 3:44the number of candidates to four who
- 3:46will then use the Conservative Party
- 3:48Conference to lay out their stall and
- 3:50explain to both Tory MPS and The Wider
- 3:52membership why they believe that they
- 3:54should be entrusted with the party
- 3:56leadership following the conference
- 3:58between the 9th and 10th of October Tor
- 4:00MPS will Whittle down the candidate list
- 4:02even further to just two at this point
- 4:05the membership vote will open and for
- 4:07the rest of October members will be
- 4:09eligible to cast their vote the ballot
- 4:11will close on the 31st of October and
- 4:13the new leader will be announced on the
- 4:152nd of November so now we understand how
- 4:17the leadership election Works let's move
- 4:19on and have a look at which MPS have
- 4:21been successful in reaching the 10
- 4:23required nominations in total six
- 4:25candidates have made their way through
- 4:27the first round the first of these was
- 4:29James cleverly the former foreign
- 4:31secretary and current Shadow Home
- 4:33Secretary of the declared candidates
- 4:35cleverly might well be the most
- 4:36difficult to pin down politically
- 4:38generally he appears to be relatively
- 4:40moderate and has been praised by his
- 4:42colleagues and by civil servants for
- 4:44being a safe Pair of Hands as a minister
- 4:46he also has a background in the
- 4:48territorial Army something that will
- 4:50certainly help him with a section of the
- 4:52Tory party membership however he may
- 4:54struggle in the leadership election as
- 4:56he hasn't really established a wider
- 4:58political vision the next MP to make it
- 5:00through was Tom tuanh hat like cleverly
- 5:03tuanh hat also has a background in the
- 5:05military serving in both Iraq and
- 5:07Afghanistan unlike cleverly though he
- 5:09hasn't yet served in the cabinet or
- 5:11Shadow cabinet tugan Haack currently
- 5:13serves as Shadow security minister after
- 5:16tugan hat came Robert jck unlike tan hat
- 5:19and cleverly generi is someone
- 5:21associated with the right of the party
- 5:23and someone who would like to see the
- 5:24party move further right on immigration
- 5:27he's already discussed a potential move
- 5:28to the right under under his leadership
- 5:30with him saying that to have any path
- 5:32back to government we must win back
- 5:34those voters we have lost across the
- 5:36board but particularly to reform
- 5:39following generic was Mel stride
- 5:41probably the least well-known of the
- 5:43declared candidates stride is a former
- 5:45working pension secretary and a close
- 5:47Ally of rishy sunak in fact he was Tred
- 5:49to do a lot of the media interviews
- 5:51during the election campaign like
- 5:53cleverly he's seen as a safe Pair of
- 5:55Hands among the party but ideologically
- 5:58he's quite tricky to pin down
- 6:00he's argued against what he described as
- 6:02ideological labels when asked about a
- 6:04potential rightwood shift although he
- 6:06did add that he wants the Tory party to
- 6:08have that of a one nation tradition
- 6:12after Mel stride was pretty Patel a
- 6:14former Home Secretary and someone seen
- 6:16as on the right of the Tory party she's
- 6:19regularly argued in favor of stricter
- 6:21controls on immigration and certainly
- 6:23has something of a following among the
- 6:25right of the party last to declare was
- 6:28KY badar another of the right and
- 6:31current favorite to win the overall Tory
- 6:33leadership election she's also
- 6:35consistently pushed for further
- 6:36restrictions on immigration and is very
- 6:38popular among the Bas something that's
- 6:40helped to put her into pole position
- 6:43with such a long leadership contest on
- 6:45the horizon though Anything Could Happen
