  7. 0:17Retold by Mac Barnett
  8. 0:19And illustrated by Jon Klassen
  9. 0:23Once upon a time,
  10. 0:25there was a bridge.
  11. 0:27And beneath that bridge,
  12. 0:30there lived a troll.
  13. 0:33The troll would sit in the mud
  14. 0:36and the rubble and trash,
  15. 0:38listening,
  16. 0:39waiting,
  17. 0:41hoping for someone to cross the bridge
  18. 0:44above his head.
  19. 0:46“I am a troll.
  20. 0:47I live to eat.
  21. 0:49I love the sound of hooves and feet
  22. 0:52and paws and claws on cobblestones.
  23. 0:56For that’s the sound
  24. 0:59of meat and bones!”
  25. 1:02The troll
  26. 1:04used a filthy fingernail to scrape the wax out of his ears.
  27. 1:10All he’d eaten lately was a leather boot
  28. 1:12and some goop
  29. 1:14he’d found in his belly button.
  30. 1:16He was practically starving.
  31. 1:19“Clip, clop! Clip, clop!”
  32. 1:22went the bridge above his head.
  33. 1:25The troll scrambled to his feet
  34. 1:27and climbed into the light, crying,
  35. 1:30“Who seeks to reach the grassy ridge?
  36. 1:34Who dares to walk across my bridge?”
  37. 1:38A little goat stood there, quivering.
  38. 1:41“It’s only me,” said the goat.
  39. 1:44“A billy goat. My last name’s Gruff.”
  40. 1:49The troll began to dance and stomp.
  41. 1:53“I love goat!
  42. 1:56Let me count the ways.
  43. 1:58A rump of goat in honey glaze.
  44. 2:02Goat smoked,
  45. 2:03goat poached,
  46. 2:05a goat pot roast.
  47. 2:07Goat smorgasbord!
  48. 2:10Goat smeared on toast!
  49. 2:12A goat kale salad — hold the kale.
  50. 2:16Goat escargot! (That’s goat plus snails.)
  51. 2:20On goat I’ll dine, on goat I’ll sup.
  52. 2:23You little goat,
  53. 2:26I’ll eat you up!”
  54. 2:28“Please!” said the little goat.
  55. 2:31“No! You don’t want to eat me!
  56. 2:34There’s hardly any meat on my bones!”
  57. 2:37The troll squinted.
  58. 2:39Now that he mentioned it,
  59. 2:41this goat did look kind of stringy.
  60. 2:45The little goat smiled.
  61. 2:48“If you let me cross,
  62. 2:51I’ll tell you a secret:
  63. 2:54Soon my big brother will come this way,
  64. 2:57and he is much fatter
  65. 2:58and tastier than I am.”
  66. 3:01“Your big brother, huh?” said the troll.
  67. 3:04He tugged the long hair that  grew from his chin.
  68. 3:09“OK.
  69. 3:11You may pass.”
  70. 3:13And the first Billy Goat Gruff
  71. 3:16trotted
  72. 3:16clip clop clip clop
  73. 3:19across the bridge.
  74. 3:21Down below, the troll chuckled to himself.
  75. 3:25“I can’t believe I tricked that goat
  76. 3:27into telling me about his big brother.
  77. 3:31I’m so smart!
  78. 3:32And fun
  79. 3:34and handsome.”
  80. 3:35“Clip, clop! Clip, clop!”
  81. 3:37went the bridge
  82. 3:38above his head.
  83. 3:40The troll scrambled to his feet
  84. 3:42and climbed into the light,
  85. 3:43crying,
  86. 3:44“Who seeks to reach the grassy ridge?
  87. 3:47Who dares to walk across my bridge?”
  88. 3:50It was another goat.
  89. 3:53“It’s only me,”
  90. 3:55said the goat.
  91. 3:56“The second of the Billy Goats Gruff.”
  92. 3:59The troll was glad to see this goat was not so small.
  93. 4:03He clapped his hands together and squealed.
  94. 4:06“I love goat!
  95. 4:10Let me count the ways!
  96. 4:12Goat Benedict with hollandaise.
  97. 4:14Goat jerky, jerk goat, curried goat.
  98. 4:18Goat gravy in a silver boat.
  99. 4:20A goat flambé with candied yams.
  100. 4:24A goat clambake, with goat, not clams!
  101. 4:27On goat I’ll dine, on goat I’ll sup.
  102. 4:30You little goat,
  103. 4:33I’ll eat you up!”
  104. 4:36“Please!” said the goat.
  105. 4:38“No!
  106. 4:40You don’t want to eat me.”
  107. 4:42The troll frowned.
  108. 4:44“Why not?
  109. 4:45You look delicious.”
  110. 4:48The second goat smiled.
  111. 4:52“I would only spoil your appetite.
  112. 4:55For if you let me cross,
  113. 4:57I’ll tell you a secret:
  114. 5:00Soon my big brother will come this way,
  115. 5:03and he is much fatter and tastier than I am.”
  116. 5:07“Your big brother, huh?”
  117. 5:09The troll whistled.
  118. 5:13“I’d sure like to see that.”
  119. 5:16He twirled his chin hair around his finger.
  120. 5:20“OK.
  121. 5:23You may pass.”
  122. 5:25And the second Billy Goat Gruff trotted
  123. 5:28clip clop clip clop
  124. 5:30across the bridge.
  125. 5:32Crouching down there in the dark,
  126. 5:34the troll was bursting with anticipation.
  127. 5:38“This third brother sounds positively mouthwatering!
  128. 5:43I can’t wait to eat him.”
  129. 5:46The troll picked at a scab.
  130. 5:49“What rhymes with strudel?”
  131. 5:53“CLIP, CLOP! CLIP, CLOP!”
  132. 5:58went the bridge.
  133. 6:00The troll began drooling.
  134. 6:02“Oh my.
  135. 6:03Here we go!”
  136. 6:05He scrambled to his feet and flung himself into the light,
  137. 6:08crying,
  138. 6:09“Who seeks to reach the grassy ridge?
  139. 6:12Who dares to walk across my bridge?”
  140. 6:18“Oh...”
  141. 6:20said the troll.
  142. 6:22“Um... I, uh...I . . .
  143. 6:29Wow.
  144. 6:31You’re really big.”
  145. 6:34The troll straightened himself up as tall as he could,
  146. 6:38coughed,
  147. 6:39and said in a voice that sounded quite small,
  148. 6:43“I’ll eat you up...you little goat.”
  149. 6:49The big goat laughed.
  150. 6:53He lowered his horns and stamped his hoof.
  151. 6:57“No,” said the goat.
  152. 6:59“You will not.”
  153. 7:02And the third Billy Goat Gruff
  154. 7:04rammed into the troll,
  155. 7:06who flew off the bridge,
  156. 7:07into the rapids,
  157. 7:09and over the waterfall
  158. 7:11which was known as
  159. 7:12“The Big Waterfall.”
  160. 7:17Then he went over
  161. 7:19“The Huge Waterfall.”
  162. 7:22And then came the waterfall we call
  163. 7:25“The Really Enormous Waterfall.”
  164. 7:29The troll floated down the river,
  165. 7:31around the bend.
  166. 7:32Where he ended up, I really can’t say.
  167. 7:35I’ve never gone that far.
  168. 7:38There are too many mosquitoes.
  169. 7:40As for the third goat,
  170. 7:42he trotted

  173. 7:49The three Billy Goats Gruff are still there today,
