  1. 0:00the story we're going to go over today
  2. 0:02is that of the infamous notorious and
  3. 0:05Despicable serial killer BTK brace
  4. 0:09yourselves for this one because it is
  5. 0:11dark and pretty heinous not in a graphic
  6. 0:15blood type of way but just the overall
  7. 0:17depraved and truly disturbing mindset
  8. 0:20and crimes that he committed I mean this
  9. 0:22guy is seriously sub-human
  10. 0:25but the reason we're going to be talking
  11. 0:27about it is because it is yes one of the
  12. 0:29most infamous True Crime cases out there
  13. 0:31but it also still has so many details
  14. 0:33that the general public isn't aware of
  15. 0:35there also is a newly heightened
  16. 0:38interest in BTK as Brian coburger is
  17. 0:41being compared to him and even suspected
  18. 0:43to have taken bits and pieces of btk's
  19. 0:46profile and make it his own all due to
  20. 0:48Brian studying directly under the
  21. 0:50professor who worked so closely with BTK
  22. 0:53and even wrote his biography many think
  23. 0:56that Brian being the criminology buff
  24. 0:58that he is still characteristics of
  25. 1:01btk's murders to either pay homage to
  26. 1:03him or to mimic the profile which as we
  27. 1:06go you be the judge of that and let me
  28. 1:08know in any event this is a case that
  29. 1:10you definitely want to have an empty
  30. 1:12stomach for because it will surely make
  31. 1:14you sick to your stomach so buckle up
  32. 1:17because we are going to do a deep dive
  33. 1:18on exactly who this Maniac was and the
  34. 1:21Trail of Terror that BTK left in his
  35. 1:24wake throughout Wichita Kansas this for
  36. 1:26almost three decades hey guys I'm Annie
  37. 1:29Elise this is tend to life let's Dive
  38. 1:32Right In
  39. 1:40[Music]
  40. 1:58Dennis Rader was born on March 9 1945 in
  41. 2:01Kansas he had two loving parents and
  42. 2:04three brothers and his parents were very
  43. 2:06well regarded in their community and
  44. 2:08their Church even though both parents
  45. 2:10worked long hours and paid a little
  46. 2:11attention to their children at home
  47. 2:13Dennis described his upbringing as very
  48. 2:16normal and in one interview Dennis
  49. 2:18explained I got along real well with Dad
  50. 2:21but Mom wasn't always so happy I've
  51. 2:23always loved her I still love her
  52. 2:25greatly but I did have a little a little
  53. 2:28bit of a grudge against Mama even though
  54. 2:31by all accounts nothing in his life
  55. 2:32seemed out of the ordinary Dennis always
  56. 2:35knew that he had something peculiar and
  57. 2:37Sinister about him one occasion that
  58. 2:40Dennis has described as possibly being
  59. 2:41the starting point for the trajectory of
  60. 2:43the rest of his life was when he was
  61. 2:45just a young boy the day his mom's ring
  62. 2:48got caught on a couch spring and she
  63. 2:50couldn't get her hand out she was
  64. 2:52terrified and told him go get help go
  65. 2:54get help but instead Dennis said that he
  66. 2:58felt the first stirrings of arousal
  67. 3:00possibly the first feelings of arousal
  68. 3:03in general given his age he felt excited
  69. 3:06watching a woman helpless and it was the
  70. 3:09beginning of his ideas about women and
  71. 3:11that what he wanted from them was to
  72. 3:13keep them trapped and helpless and
  73. 3:15looking to him in Terror this memory
  74. 3:17ultimately became imprinted in his mind
  75. 3:19and became the image he was always after
  76. 3:23when Dennis was in fifth grade he had an
  77. 3:25issue with his teacher he felt like she
  78. 3:27was domineering and mean to him and had
  79. 3:29embarrassed him in class one day so
  80. 3:31Dennis decided to go to her house and
  81. 3:33watch her through the windows most of
  82. 3:36the time he would just see her doing
  83. 3:37mundane things but Dennis was hooked in
  84. 3:40doing this something about watching a
  85. 3:42woman that had no idea that she was
  86. 3:44being watched gave Dennis a sense of
  87. 3:47power control and a sense of control
  88. 3:49over the situation and this was very
  89. 3:52arousing to Dennis one day as he was
  90. 3:54being a Peeping Tom Dennis took a rope
  91. 3:57with him and he tied it around his waist
  92. 3:59and he watched her something about the
  93. 4:02Rope around his waist while watching her
  94. 4:04brought him back to those feelings of
  95. 4:06power control and arousal but this time
  96. 4:09he actually got off if you know what I
  97. 4:12mean now I don't know if he was
  98. 4:14physically actually touching himself
  99. 4:15when this occurred or if it was just the
  100. 4:17thought as he was you know watching her
  101. 4:19and feeling the Rope but in any event it
  102. 4:22came to a and I know that's literally
  103. 4:25nauseating and disgusting but this is
  104. 4:27the level of like twisted and the sick
  105. 4:29kind of person that he is
  106. 4:31in his later teen years sometimes Dennis
  107. 4:33would bind his hands and ankles with
  108. 4:35rope and cover his head with a bag he
  109. 4:38also cut out photos of women from
  110. 4:39magazines whom he found arousing and
  111. 4:42Drew ropes and gags on them on their
  112. 4:44images imagining how he could restrain
  113. 4:46and control them
  114. 4:48Dennis has described his childhood
  115. 4:50saying that he sort of had some problems
  116. 4:52sexual sexual fantasies probably more
  117. 4:56than normal all males probably go
  118. 4:58through some kind of a sexual fantasy
  119. 5:00mine was probably a bit weirder than
  120. 5:02other people uh yeah bro you think
  121. 5:05that's like not even the definition of
  122. 5:07weird you can't even use that word it's
  123. 5:09something completely different which I
  124. 5:10can't even think of what word comes to
  125. 5:11mind except ew ew Dennis also tortured
  126. 5:16killed and sometimes even hung small
  127. 5:18animals now we've heard all about this
  128. 5:20as being like a red flag in young
  129. 5:23children the second somebody is found
  130. 5:24torturing animals it's like you know
  131. 5:26they're gonna most likely turn into a
  132. 5:27complete sociopath so he was torturing
  133. 5:30killing and even would hang them up
  134. 5:32sometimes so this combined with his
  135. 5:34sadistic sexual fantasies would later
  136. 5:37turn him into one of America's most
  137. 5:38heinous serial killers who played a sick
  138. 5:41game of cat and mouse with law
  139. 5:43enforcement for almost three decades his
  140. 5:46shocking arrest blew the minds of
  141. 5:48everybody he knew because he hid in
  142. 5:50plain sight as a loving husband and a
  143. 5:52good man and ultimately that threw a
  144. 5:55wrench in the characterization and
  145. 5:56profiles of serial killers because he
  146. 5:59didn't fit the stereotypical mold like
  147. 6:01his Infamous predecessors
  148. 6:03so what was his life like well somehow
  149. 6:06he maintained an ordinary appearance and
  150. 6:08could compartmentalize the dark and
  151. 6:10deviant side of himself Dennis graduated
  152. 6:13high school from Wichita Heights High
  153. 6:15School and later went to a local
  154. 6:17University But ultimately dropped out
  155. 6:19after a year from there he enlisted in
  156. 6:22the U.S Air Force and served for four
  157. 6:24years between 1966 and 1970. after that
  158. 6:28he returned back to Kansas this time in
  159. 6:31Park City and he caught up with his old
  160. 6:33friends and was beginning to start the
  161. 6:34rest of his life his mom ended up
  162. 6:36introducing him to a girl from the local
  163. 6:38church that she wanted to set Dennis up
  164. 6:40with and her name was Paula well Dennis
  165. 6:43and Paula hit it off and they got
  166. 6:44married in 1971. they had a house in
  167. 6:47Park City Kansas and during this time
  168. 6:49everything on the surface seemed
  169. 6:51completely normal for Dennis he had a
  170. 6:54job as an electrician for the Coleman
  171. 6:56company which is an outdoor supply
  172. 6:57company and he went back to college and
  173. 6:59received an associate's degree in
  174. 7:01electronics in 1973. in 1975 Dennis and
  175. 7:05Paula had welcomed their firstborn child
  176. 7:07Brian uh Brian but it's Brian with an
  177. 7:09eye after Brian was born Dennis
  178. 7:11continued his education and later got a
  179. 7:13Bachelor's degree in science and
  180. 7:15administrative Justice at Wichita State
  181. 7:17University during that time Dennis and
  182. 7:20Paula had their second child a daughter
  183. 7:22named Carrie Dennis was a good father
  184. 7:24and loved his wife and children deeply
  185. 7:27he was a member of Christ Lutheran
  186. 7:29Church in Wichita and had been elected
  187. 7:31president of the church Council and was
  188. 7:33also a cub scout leader
  189. 7:35from 1974 to 1988 he worked at the
  190. 7:38Wichita based office of ADT Security
  191. 7:40where he installed security alarms in
  192. 7:43May of 1991 he became a compliance
  193. 7:46officer in Park City in this position
  194. 7:48neighbors recalled him as being
  195. 7:50sometimes overzealous and extremely
  196. 7:52strict as well as taking special
  197. 7:54pleasure in bullying and harassing
  198. 7:57single women but other than that one
  199. 7:59account Not only was he well liked
  200. 8:01within his community he came off as the
  201. 8:03perfect husband and father and an
  202. 8:05upstanding citizen
  203. 8:07now let's dig a little deeper into what
  204. 8:09else Dennis was up to during that time
  205. 8:11because as you'll soon find out this
  206. 8:13side of his life was a complete and
  207. 8:15utter farce I know that that was a lot
  208. 8:18of dates that I just spit out at you and
  209. 8:20a lot of information but don't worry
  210. 8:21because it is all going to come together
  211. 8:23shortly now after Dennis and Paul got
  212. 8:26married Dennis had a job as an
  213. 8:28electrician while working towards his
  214. 8:29associate degree however at some point
  215. 8:31in 1973 Dennis was laid off from his job
  216. 8:34Dennis was 28 years old and out of work
  217. 8:37and this was a huge blow to him so while
  218. 8:40he spent time at home planning his next
  219. 8:42move while his wife was at work
  220. 8:43unbeknownst to everybody Dennis was
  221. 8:46actually planning a different next move
  222. 8:48entirely losing his job is actually what
  223. 8:51set him off to commit his first home
  224. 8:53break-in now obviously that is a huge
  225. 8:57leap people don't just get laid off or
  226. 9:00get fired or even quit their job and
  227. 9:01decide hey you know what I'm going to
  228. 9:03start breaking into homes but this was a
  229. 9:06big leap for Dennis Dennis says that he
  230. 9:09was just frustrated with the system and
  231. 9:10had an opportunity and so he wanted to
  232. 9:12go on the prowl and decided to break
  233. 9:14into his first home Dennis planned this
  234. 9:16and even had some practice sessions all
  235. 9:19to amp himself up and to get himself
  236. 9:21ready to do this but even though the
  237. 9:23people that had lived inside the home
  238. 9:25had absolutely nothing to do with him
  239. 9:27losing his job Dennis said that he
  240. 9:30basically wanted to do something deviant
  241. 9:31as a way to relieve his frustration and
  242. 9:34this goes back to his distorted sense of
  243. 9:36power and control from his childhood to
  244. 9:39him planning and organizing a crime was
  245. 9:42taking his power back but he didn't stop
  246. 9:44it just breaking into homes and being a
  247. 9:46pervert and stealing bras and underwear
  248. 9:48during these break-ins Dennis decided
  249. 9:51that he wanted to up the ante and this
  250. 9:53time to do something even darker
  251. 9:56this is when his heinous murder spree
  252. 9:58began
  253. 9:59Ted Bundy once said we serial killers
  254. 10:02are your sons we are your husbands we
  255. 10:04are everywhere and there will be more of
  256. 10:06your children dead tomorrow
  257. 10:09serial killers was a phrase coined after
  258. 10:11Ted Bundy and as much as I hate to say
  259. 10:13it he was kind of dead on when it came
  260. 10:15to Dennis Raider Julian Joseph Otero had
  261. 10:18five children and had just moved to
  262. 10:19Wichita Kansas
  263. 10:21Dennis saw Julie walking her children to
  264. 10:23school while he was driving his own wife
  265. 10:25to work and he just picked her at random
  266. 10:27and said that's her he stalked her for a
  267. 10:31little bit to learn her schedule and
  268. 10:32knew that her husband and children
  269. 10:33should be gone during the weekdays but
  270. 10:36on January 15 1974 Julian Joseph's three
  271. 10:40oldest children had gone to school that
  272. 10:42day leaving the other two younger ones
  273. 10:44nine-year-old Joey Jr and 11 year old
  274. 10:46Josie at home with their parents Joseph
  275. 10:49Julie's husband wasn't going to work
  276. 10:51that day when Dennis approached the home
  277. 10:53he encountered a dog which also threw
  278. 10:55him off completely he had never seen a
  279. 10:58dog and wasn't aware that the family had
  280. 10:59one then he took a pair of wire cutters
  281. 11:02and snipped the phone line so that Julie
  282. 11:04wouldn't be able to call the police
  283. 11:06while doing this and peeping in the
  284. 11:08windows he saw that Julie's husband was
  285. 11:10home at this point Julie was the only
  286. 11:13person that Dennis had planned on
  287. 11:15killing and he didn't expect Joseph to
  288. 11:17be there in fact he even wondered if
  289. 11:19this would be a problem for him in the
  290. 11:22end though he didn't care he had made
  291. 11:24his decision and he would do the same
  292. 11:25thing when it came upon the two youngest
  293. 11:28children
  294. 11:28this was what he planned and anyone who
  295. 11:31stood in the way of that would have to
  296. 11:33go as well it didn't matter if she was
  297. 11:35the Target and if there were other
  298. 11:37people in the home he had a mission set
  299. 11:40out in front of him if he catch my drift
  300. 11:42there with the parallels to coburger
  301. 11:45Dennis said that Joey Jr and Josie were
  302. 11:47forced to watch while he strangled their
  303. 11:49parents to death then Dennis strangled
  304. 11:52Joey Jr and dragged Josie down into the
  305. 11:54basement where Dennis pulled off her
  306. 11:56underwear and hung her from a sewer pipe
  307. 11:59her last words were to ask what would
  308. 12:01happen to her and Dennis calmly told her
  309. 12:04well honey you're going to be in heaven
  310. 12:06tonight with the rest of your family
  311. 12:08he took pictures of the dead bodies and
  312. 12:11gathered up Josie's underwear as a
  313. 12:12trophy of his first murders then this
  314. 12:16heartless evil disgusting excuse for a
  315. 12:19human went home to his wife and acted
  316. 12:21like nothing had ever happened
  317. 12:23after all he had to go home and get
  318. 12:26ready for church when the older children
  319. 12:28arrived back home their son Charlie who
  320. 12:31was 15 at the time walked to the back
  321. 12:33gate and realized that their dog lucky
  322. 12:35was outside in the snow which was not
  323. 12:37normal for Lucky Charlie opened up the
  324. 12:40back door and noticed that his mom's
  325. 12:41purse was on the stove flipped open then
  326. 12:44one of his siblings who went to the
  327. 12:45school that day ran up to Charlie and
  328. 12:47said hey don't come back here Mom and
  329. 12:50Dad are playing a bad trick on us so
  330. 12:53Charlie went back there opened his
  331. 12:55parents bedroom door and found his mom
  332. 12:57laying on the bed beat up his father had
  333. 13:00a belt around his neck and everything
  334. 13:02smelled like death
  335. 13:04Charlie told his brother to call the
  336. 13:06police but the brother said that the
  337. 13:07phone wasn't working so the brother went
  338. 13:09next door and called the police when the
  339. 13:11police arrived they talked to the three
  340. 13:13older children and realized they didn't
  341. 13:15know where their two younger siblings
  342. 13:16nine-year-old Joey and 11 year old Josie
  343. 13:19were when the police went through the
  344. 13:21house they found Joey dead in his
  345. 13:23bedroom but Josie was in the basement
  346. 13:26hanging from a pipe one of the things
  347. 13:28that the crime scene investigators
  348. 13:30noticed was that whoever did this
  349. 13:31changed the thermostat and set the heat
  350. 13:34on extremely high to make the bodies
  351. 13:36decompose faster and to mess up the
  352. 13:39police's ability to estimate the time of
  353. 13:41death another thing nothing in the house
  354. 13:44was stolen
  355. 13:45so who did this and what was their
  356. 13:48motive well when the police found a
  357. 13:50Josie in the basement again who is 11
  358. 13:52years old she was partially clothed and
  359. 13:56there was male fluid on her and around
  360. 13:58her body this told investigators that
  361. 14:01the crime was sexually motivated even
  362. 14:04though poor Josie wasn't touched in that
  363. 14:06way and wasn't forced to participate in
  364. 14:09any acts of that nature Instead This was
  365. 14:12done by a sicko that did this for his
  366. 14:14own solo gratification
  367. 14:17unfortunately back in 1974 there wasn't
  368. 14:19much that could be done with DNA at all
  369. 14:21however the police department took the
  370. 14:24DNA evidence properly and secured it one
  371. 14:26thing was taken from the house that
  372. 14:28police never noticed a small radio the
  373. 14:31family murders were the first taste of a
  374. 14:33Maniac in Wichita or in Kansas in
  375. 14:36general and the police were hopeful that
  376. 14:38this was a one-off situation but
  377. 14:40obviously they were wrong Dennis
  378. 14:42continued and each of his hunting
  379. 14:44conquests for victims would be something
  380. 14:46he would later call his projects each
  381. 14:49one had a unique name like project green
  382. 14:52for example from here he would scope out
  383. 14:54victims in a particular neighborhood one
  384. 14:57that was close to a highway which Dennis
  385. 14:59thought would be helpful for an easy
  386. 15:01getaway
  387. 15:02a few months later on April 4th 1974
  388. 15:05Catherine bright a 21 year old who
  389. 15:07Dennis had worked with before he was
  390. 15:09fired arrived home around 2PM with her
  391. 15:12brother Kevin now remember Dennis was
  392. 15:14going to school at Wichita State but he
  393. 15:16still found time between classes to
  394. 15:18watch her and to learn her schedule he
  395. 15:21spent about a month watching her and
  396. 15:23knew that he could easily break into her
  397. 15:25apartment while she was gone and then
  398. 15:27kill her Dennis planned for two o'clock
  399. 15:28which just goes to show how bold and
  400. 15:31Brazen he was to think that it would be
  401. 15:33a good idea to carry out a crime in the
  402. 15:35middle of the day nevertheless Catherine
  403. 15:38and Kevin went back to her apartment and
  404. 15:40were ambushed by Dennis who was hiding
  405. 15:42in Catherine's bedroom
  406. 15:44Dennis ran out with a gun pointed
  407. 15:46straight at them he was shocked to see
  408. 15:48Kevin but at that point once again he
  409. 15:51was already committed to going through
  410. 15:53with this and had no option but to kill
  411. 15:56both of them
  412. 15:57he forced Catherine and Kevin into her
  413. 15:59bedroom and ordered Kevin to tie
  414. 16:01Catherine's hands and feet then he took
  415. 16:03Kevin into another room and while trying
  416. 16:05to tie him up Kevin fought back and
  417. 16:07almost took the gun away from him but
  418. 16:09was unfortunately unsuccessful
  419. 16:12then Dennis took the gun and shot Kevin
  420. 16:14in the head twice thinking that he was
  421. 16:17dead then he went back to Catherine and
  422. 16:20tried to strangle her
  423. 16:22while that was happening somehow Kevin
  424. 16:24wasn't dead miraculously and was able to
  425. 16:27escape
  426. 16:28strangling Catherine wasn't working and
  427. 16:30Dennis started to freak out a little bit
  428. 16:32when he noticed that the apartment door
  429. 16:34was wide open and that's when he started
  430. 16:36to stab her in the stomach multiple
  431. 16:38times
  432. 16:39Kevin was able to run away and found
  433. 16:40some bystanders that helped him thank
  434. 16:42goodness but Catherine wasn't so lucky
  435. 16:45after emergency surgeries and blood
  436. 16:48transfusions she passed away Kevin was
  437. 16:51in critical condition but ended up
  438. 16:53miraculously surviving since Kevin
  439. 16:55survived he was actually able to give
  440. 16:57the police this sketch now remember guys
  441. 17:00this was the 70s so I know that picture
  442. 17:02is a little bit lacking compared to what
  443. 17:04sketches are these days
  444. 17:06Dennis did not necessarily want to stab
  445. 17:08Catherine but he did it because he was
  446. 17:10panicking and Dennis never used a knife
  447. 17:12again because he said it didn't give him
  448. 17:14the same satisfaction as torturing
  449. 17:16people
  450. 17:17Dennis loved the attention these crimes
  451. 17:19were getting in the newspaper and he
  452. 17:21loved feeling smarter than the police
  453. 17:23smarter than the police I'm just gonna
  454. 17:26say that one more time guys with a
  455. 17:28little bit of emphasis on it
  456. 17:30however in October of 1974 a random guy
  457. 17:33allegedly confessed to killing that
  458. 17:36entire family with two of his friends
  459. 17:38and nobody was about to take credit for
  460. 17:41something that Dennis did
  461. 17:43and that's when an editor at the Wichita
  462. 17:45Eagle received an anonymous phone call
  463. 17:48that directed him to a mechanical
  464. 17:50engineering book at the Wichita Public
  465. 17:52Library police found the book and a
  466. 17:55letter which detailed in-depth facts
  467. 17:57about the case that were unknown to the
  468. 17:59public something that only somebody with
  469. 18:01intimate knowledge of the crime scene or
  470. 18:03that the killer would know
  471. 18:05the Wichita Eagle called the police and
  472. 18:07back in the 70s the media typically did
  473. 18:10what the police asked them in this
  474. 18:12instance police asked them not to talk
  475. 18:15about this because they didn't want the
  476. 18:16public to know that there could possibly
  477. 18:18be a serial killer on the loose in this
  478. 18:20letter Dennis named himself BTK as he
  479. 18:24would later be infamously known as
  480. 18:27usually Killers Don't name themselves
  481. 18:29it's just something that catches in the
  482. 18:30headlines but he apparently felt like he
  483. 18:33deserved a name he said that the police
  484. 18:35would come to know his crimes because he
  485. 18:37would bind torture kill because he would
  486. 18:41bind torture and kill equaling BTK now
  487. 18:46guys when Dennis wrote this letter his
  488. 18:48wife Paula was three months pregnant
  489. 18:52can you even imagine like what a lunatic
  490. 18:57so 1974 was a crazy year for Dennis
  491. 19:00between the family Massacre and
  492. 19:03Catherine he had now killed five people
  493. 19:06since Dennis committed the two crimes
  494. 19:08very differently the police didn't
  495. 19:10suspect that the same killer was
  496. 19:12responsible and not only that the police
  497. 19:15didn't have any leads or anything
  498. 19:16connecting him at all other than that
  499. 19:19vague sketch which would later embolden
  500. 19:21him however in 1975 and 1976 Dennis went
  501. 19:25through his first quote-unquote cooling
  502. 19:27period and he didn't commit any other
  503. 19:29crimes for two years although this is
  504. 19:32common with serial killers it is still
  505. 19:34so incredibly chilling to think about
  506. 19:37Dennis had the ability to somehow turn
  507. 19:40this sadistic sexual fantasy killer side
  508. 19:42of him off which I actually would argue
  509. 19:44was his main side and go home to his
  510. 19:47wife and act like nothing ever happened
  511. 19:50in 1975 he and Paula welcomed their
  512. 19:52first child a son named Brian and after
  513. 19:54Brian was born Dennis continued his
  514. 19:57education and later started his bachelor
  515. 19:59degree in science and administrative
  516. 20:00Justice going back and thinking about
  517. 20:03the other children that he killed and
  518. 20:05then now welcoming your own child like
  519. 20:07nothing happened is a horrifying level
  520. 20:09of disassociation and
  521. 20:11compartmentalization in my opinion
  522. 20:13finally Dennis had enough playing daddy
  523. 20:16dearest his urges were building up
  524. 20:18inside of him again and he was gearing
  525. 20:20up again to go on another Killing Spree
  526. 20:22almost three years after he killed
  527. 20:25Catherine it was the day that he was now
  528. 20:27supposed to go after a woman named
  529. 20:29Cheryl one of his quote-unquote projects
  530. 20:32whom he had met at a bar but Cheryl
  531. 20:35wasn't home now this was not part of the
  532. 20:37plan and this enraged Dennis how could
  533. 20:40she not be home he had been stalking her
  534. 20:42learning her schedule learning her
  535. 20:44routine and this was not in it and he
  536. 20:46wasn't just going to go home and forget
  537. 20:48about it because for Dennis and I quote
  538. 20:49this the train was already on the tracks
  539. 20:53which is actually a phrase that Dennis
  540. 20:55used to describe the way he felt when
  541. 20:58things like this would happen he planned
  542. 21:00for this day since his wife would be at
  543. 21:02work and he had an alibi he had dressed
  544. 21:04up in a tweet overcoat and had a
  545. 21:06briefcase that contained his tools or
  546. 21:07what he called his hit kits where it had
  547. 21:10all the items that he would use during
  548. 21:11his crimes he was prepared and his hit
  549. 21:13kits included all types of bondage and
  550. 21:16ropes chains gags plastic bags Etc so to
  551. 21:19him there was no turning back at this
  552. 21:21point it wasn't even an option once he
  553. 21:24made up his mind his Twisted desires
  554. 21:26took over him and he would do anything
  555. 21:28to satisfy himself so it didn't matter
  556. 21:31that Cheryl wasn't home he would find
  557. 21:33somebody else luckily for Dennis he had
  558. 21:36scoped out this neighborhood and already
  559. 21:38had a few other projects of his in mind
  560. 21:41so instead he went down the neighborhood
  561. 21:43streets and knocked on a few doors of
  562. 21:45his projects but nobody answered the
  563. 21:48door then he went down a different
  564. 21:49street 3 and came in contact with a
  565. 21:51five-year-old boy Steven relford
  566. 21:54he showed the boy a picture and asked if
  567. 21:56he recognized the people in it and the
  568. 21:58boy said no then the boy went inside his
  569. 22:01house Dennis saw this as an opportunity
  570. 22:03surely there had to be a woman Inside
  571. 22:06likely the little boy's mother
  572. 22:08so about 15 minutes later he went up to
  573. 22:11the house and knocked on the little
  574. 22:12boy's door little Stephen opened the
  575. 22:14door and was immediately shoved out of
  576. 22:16the way and Dennis stormed into the
  577. 22:18house
  578. 22:19Dennis pulled down the blinds turned off
  579. 22:21the TV and forced Steven and his two
  580. 22:24siblings to get in the bathroom then he
  581. 22:26pushed a bed against the door so the
  582. 22:28kids could not get out however there was
  583. 22:30a crack in the door where Steven was
  584. 22:32able to have almost a direct line of
  585. 22:34view of his mother Shirley vian's
  586. 22:36bedroom Dennis told Shirley he planned
  587. 22:39on having his way with her she was
  588. 22:41freaking out but somehow he was able to
  589. 22:43lead her to believe that there wouldn't
  590. 22:45be any sort of sex assault and calmed
  591. 22:48her down by giving her a glass of water
  592. 22:50and even smoked a cigarette with her he
  593. 22:53even got her to ask her kids to stop
  594. 22:55screaming and promised if they did that
  595. 22:57that everything would be okay
  596. 22:59little Stephen was in the bathroom
  597. 23:01watching through a crack and saw Dennis
  598. 23:03tape his mother's hands and her feet
  599. 23:05around her back put a bag over her head
  600. 23:07a rope around her neck and lay her face
  601. 23:10down then he left
  602. 23:13Stephen kept ramming the door over and
  603. 23:15over again until finally there was a
  604. 23:16hole in it he ran to his mother's room
  605. 23:18and saw what he now describes as an
  606. 23:21image burned in his head that will never
  607. 23:23go away
  608. 23:24Dennis strangled Shirley with a cord
  609. 23:26around her neck he also left his bodily
  610. 23:29fluids on her underwear which were found
  611. 23:31next to her body he did not touch her
  612. 23:34sexually in any way this was another
  613. 23:36case of his own solo satisfaction
  614. 23:39Journey
  615. 23:40Shirley was only 24 when she was
  616. 23:43murdered now at this point Dennis was a
  617. 23:45father with a living child it wasn't
  618. 23:48just an idea to him that he would one
  619. 23:49day maybe have a child and yet he let
  620. 23:52these other kids scream and cry while
  621. 23:54they watched him brutally murder their
  622. 23:56mother
  623. 23:57Dennis said that this didn't bother him
  624. 23:59though because his objective was the
  625. 24:01mother he even compared it to being in
  626. 24:03World War II and flying a bomber with an
  627. 24:06anime aircraft shooting you down but the
  628. 24:08main focus is to drop the bombs and
  629. 24:10nothing else matters
  630. 24:11seriously he actually compared young
  631. 24:13children crying for their mom as an
  632. 24:15enemy aircraft he also wasn't worried
  633. 24:18about what would happen to them saying
  634. 24:20that they were old enough to take care
  635. 24:21of themselves well Steven was the oldest
  636. 24:23and he was just what five or six so
  637. 24:25either that was a lie altogether or it
  638. 24:28just goes to show how truly delusional
  639. 24:30Dennis was later on Dennis said he
  640. 24:33thought that he would kill the kids too
  641. 24:34but he either got spooked or decided not
  642. 24:38to it almost goes without saying but his
  643. 24:40complete lack of remorse and
  644. 24:42self-reflection is more than disturbing
  645. 24:44it's just unfathomable but certainly
  646. 24:47it's in line with the thought patterns
  647. 24:49of a full-blown narcissistic psychopath
  648. 24:52Wichita Police believed that the person
  649. 24:55responsible for Shirley's death could be
  650. 24:57related to the family Massacre as well
  651. 24:59because of the way that Shirley was tied
  652. 25:01up and with those bodily fluids next to
  653. 25:03her which one point I want to make
  654. 25:06Dennis Raider never assaulted anybody
  655. 25:09sexually and he says that even serial
  656. 25:12killers have some type of taboo and that
  657. 25:15was his he never realized that this
  658. 25:17doesn't make him not that bad or less of
  659. 25:19an evil psycho because murder is still a
  660. 25:21crime arguably the worst crime you could
  661. 25:24commit so how is it that too far but
  662. 25:27murder is somehow okay it's just
  663. 25:30ludicrous and news flash that doesn't
  664. 25:32give you some type of moral compass all
  665. 25:35right you're still disgusting you're
  666. 25:37still a pile of crap and you're still
  667. 25:39creepy and weird as F now the types of
  668. 25:42knots and bindings were also the same
  669. 25:44which were kinds of knots not for
  670. 25:46holding somebody down or preventing them
  671. 25:48from moving they were used for sexual
  672. 25:50gratification police also believed that
  673. 25:53while there was never a burglary per se
  674. 25:55whoever was responsible took personal
  675. 25:57belongings from his victims like
  676. 25:59underwear bras pantyhose Etc to continue
  677. 26:01to fantasize about the situation long
  678. 26:04after the crime because Shirley's kids
  679. 26:06had seen him Dennis was worried that
  680. 26:08they might be able to identify him so he
  681. 26:11didn't immediately try to toy with law
  682. 26:12enforcement he also waited until
  683. 26:14December almost nine months later before
  684. 26:17he would pick his next victim in
  685. 26:19December 1977 while he was feeling a
  686. 26:22little bit cocky because he now had
  687. 26:24gotten away with six murders and felt
  688. 26:26like he was in the clear since nothing
  689. 26:27had happened he realized that he had
  690. 26:29made some planning mistakes with his
  691. 26:31past victims and close calls with
  692. 26:33unknown factors so he wanted to make
  693. 26:35sure that his next project would go down
  694. 26:38without any hiccups
  695. 26:40Dennis saw a young woman outside during
  696. 26:42one of his prowls he had found his next
  697. 26:45victim in this and that was 25 year old
  698. 26:47Nancy Fox
  699. 26:49she was petite young and blonde he
  700. 26:52became obsessed with stalking her for
  701. 26:54several weeks leading up to December he
  702. 26:56knew her routine and followed her to her
  703. 26:58jobs
  704. 26:59since it was the holiday season Nancy
  705. 27:01had picked up a second job at the mall
  706. 27:03Dennis actually followed her there and
  707. 27:06would just act like a random Shopper so
  708. 27:08that he would just have the chance to
  709. 27:10talk to her or bump into her I mean this
  710. 27:13creepy guy I don't even know what to say
  711. 27:15I'm running out of words to even
  712. 27:16describe this low life this is some sick
  713. 27:19stuff on December 8 1977 he cut Nancy's
  714. 27:22phone line and then broke into her
  715. 27:24duplex from the back door from there he
  716. 27:27waited for her to come home and when she
  717. 27:29did he jumped out and surprised her with
  718. 27:31a gun he told her that he had a sexual
  719. 27:33issue and that in order to get rid of
  720. 27:35that issue he had to tie her up and
  721. 27:38assault her sexually after being allowed
  722. 27:40to halfway undress herself in the
  723. 27:42bathroom he made her go into her bedroom
  724. 27:44then he tied her up and started to
  725. 27:46undress himself and started to strangle
  726. 27:49her as he strangled her he confessed to
  727. 27:52her who he really was and what he had
  728. 27:54done in the past her body was found
  729. 27:56later with bodily fluids on her
  730. 27:58nightgown
  731. 27:59now at this point Dennis was working for
  732. 28:02ADT yes ADT the security company he went
  733. 28:06home to his wife and now two-year-old
  734. 28:08son and again acted like business as
  735. 28:11usual a normal day at work nothing to
  736. 28:13see here just hey guys hey family
  737. 28:15welcome home I'm home well after a long
  738. 28:16day I'm so tired where's dinner in fact
  739. 28:19he was probably the reason for adt's
  740. 28:21sudden spike in business and here he was
  741. 28:23the reason that people wanted security
  742. 28:25and home protection in the first place
  743. 28:28the following day on his way to work
  744. 28:29Dennis was hungry for attention
  745. 28:31immediate attention this time he needed
  746. 28:34acknowledgment from the police that they
  747. 28:36knew BTK killed again so he decided to
  748. 28:39ring up the local police department from
  749. 28:41a pay phone and said this
  750. 28:52um
  751. 29:04the police rushed to Nancy's duplex and
  752. 29:07found her body strangled to death the
  753. 29:10police tried to replay the recording of
  754. 29:12his voice many times but never found a
  755. 29:14match and at this point the police
  756. 29:16hadn't 100 linked Nancy's death with BTK
  757. 29:21Dennis was actually worried that many
  758. 29:23people may recognize his voice and then
  759. 29:25would say oh my gosh I know this guy and
  760. 29:27that he would be caught but he then
  761. 29:29reassured himself thinking of all of the
  762. 29:31times in the past that he was never
  763. 29:32caught even when he thought he was going
  764. 29:34down now this emboldened Dennis and made
  765. 29:37him feel like he was special and much
  766. 29:39smarter than the police which led him to
  767. 29:42making more risky decisions in the
  768. 29:43future but in the meantime he had to do
  769. 29:45some chores back in his double life
  770. 29:47marriage to Paula and being a father to
  771. 29:49his son in fact a year later in 1978
  772. 29:53Paula and Dennis welcomed a second child
  773. 29:55a daughter named Carrie the same year in
  774. 29:581978 Dennis realized it had been four
  775. 30:01years since he had Direct correspondence
  776. 30:03with the police through his letters and
  777. 30:05now that he committed two more murders
  778. 30:07he was looking for attention because he
  779. 30:10or BTK wasn't getting the publicity he
  780. 30:13felt he deserved so he decided to
  781. 30:15approach another media Outlet
  782. 30:17k-a-k-e which I believe was an affiliate
  783. 30:20of ABC
  784. 30:22he thought it would be a good idea to
  785. 30:24send a sarcastic poem about Nancy's
  786. 30:26murder along with a serious letter where
  787. 30:29the mysterious BTK was again taking
  788. 30:31responsibility for the past seven
  789. 30:33homicides including Shirley and
  790. 30:35Catherine and revealing intimate details
  791. 30:38about the crime
  792. 30:39It Was Written the same way as the
  793. 30:41letter that was found in October of 1974
  794. 30:43by the Wichita Eagle except this letter
  795. 30:46included a term factor x which is
  796. 30:49something we will get more into later
  797. 30:51but is basically the Dark Side of
  798. 30:53himself that he blames all of his
  799. 30:54actions on the Wichita Police Department
  800. 30:57had not told the public that there was a
  801. 30:59serial killer on the loose which
  802. 31:00frustrated him because he wanted his
  803. 31:02work to be recognized in this letter he
  804. 31:06wrote how many people do I have to kill
  805. 31:08to get my name in the paper signed BTK
  806. 31:12ultimately the police chief decided that
  807. 31:15he needed to come clean with the public
  808. 31:16when Dennis heard the news he said he
  809. 31:19felt a pretty big buzz and it was a very
  810. 31:21big high for him he finally got
  811. 31:23recognition and was feeling good about
  812. 31:25himself and he even compared himself to
  813. 31:27a movie star
  814. 31:29people in Wichita were absolutely
  815. 31:31terrified it changed the entire way that
  816. 31:34they went about their routines they
  817. 31:36didn't have an answer for what had
  818. 31:37happened and they were just baffled
  819. 31:39young women were especially scared
  820. 31:41because they were worried that they
  821. 31:43would be the next victim Dennis felt
  822. 31:45like he had control of the public the
  823. 31:47news media and the police department at
  824. 31:49this point
  825. 31:50in November of 1978 police had another
  826. 31:53idea since so many of Dennis's letters
  827. 31:55were made of things he used a copy
  828. 31:57machine with the police contacted Xerox
  829. 32:00hoping that they would be able to
  830. 32:02identify or narrow down the copy machine
  831. 32:05and they were able to they figured out
  832. 32:07that it came from a copy machine at
  833. 32:09Wichita State University this was the
  834. 32:12closest they would come to catching
  835. 32:14Dennis for a very long time
  836. 32:16in 1979 he graduated with his bachelor's
  837. 32:19in science and administrative Justice
  838. 32:21from Wichita State he has later admitted
  839. 32:24to looking for things in his education
  840. 32:26that would help him in his crimes like
  841. 32:28forensics he said he made sure not to
  842. 32:30leave fingerprints and would wear gloves
  843. 32:32like you would wash dishes with of
  844. 32:34course the DNA part didn't really Dawn
  845. 32:36on him since this was long before DNA
  846. 32:38was really used in solving crimes
  847. 32:41all of these things just made him feel
  848. 32:42like some type of genius and that now he
  849. 32:45knew what to do when committing crimes
  850. 32:46to go completely and totally unnoticed
  851. 32:49and not leave a trace of evidence
  852. 32:51when asked what he wanted to do with his
  853. 32:53degree he said that he applied for the
  854. 32:55Wichita Police Department the sheriff's
  855. 32:57department and Highway Patrol but that
  856. 33:00they had all turned him away
  857. 33:03guys quickly going to talk about
  858. 33:05parallels remember when Brian applied
  859. 33:07for the internship with the local police
  860. 33:09department remember when he said he
  861. 33:11leaned on his education to figure out
  862. 33:13how to avoid certain things in his
  863. 33:15crimes from getting caught could all be
  864. 33:18a coincidence but we also know he
  865. 33:19studied directly under the professor who
  866. 33:22worked with BTK who wrote btk's
  867. 33:24biography who probably shared a lot
  868. 33:26about this in different classes and
  869. 33:28courses so I'm just saying at the Kansas
  870. 33:30Bureau of Investigation One agent spoke
  871. 33:33out and said that they had read
  872. 33:34everything that he wrote and sent in
  873. 33:36every piece of paper was examined
  874. 33:38everything looked at and not one piece
  875. 33:40ever had a fingerprint hair a fiber that
  876. 33:43could be identified nothing so Dennis
  877. 33:46definitely was trying to cover his
  878. 33:48tracks the best he could and the classes
  879. 33:50that he took are helping him evade being
  880. 33:52on police's radar on April 28 1979
  881. 33:55Dennis had plans to kill another
  882. 33:57unsuspecting woman this time a 63 year
  883. 34:01old named Anna Williams Dennis staked
  884. 34:04out her house all day but finally gave
  885. 34:06up because she was taking too long to
  886. 34:08come home and I didn't know this but at
  887. 34:10the time this actually saved her life
  888. 34:12however two months later Anna figured
  889. 34:15out that she was a Target after she
  890. 34:16received several of her personal items
  891. 34:18like a scarf in the mail that Dennis had
  892. 34:20taken from the house along with a poem
  893. 34:23that read oh Anna why didn't you appear
  894. 34:26can you imagine how terrifying that must
  895. 34:30have been to open your mailbox and see
  896. 34:32your own items being sent to you with a
  897. 34:35creepy poem this was also a way to get
  898. 34:37law enforcement's attention again
  899. 34:38because he hoped that she would call the
  900. 34:40police and that they would know BTK was
  901. 34:43still out there
  902. 34:44in 1980 he decided to take his second
  903. 34:47major cooling off period it was two
  904. 34:49years since his last murder since his
  905. 34:51plans with Anna didn't work out and he
  906. 34:53actually didn't kill anyone again for
  907. 34:55many years again he laid low and got on
  908. 34:59with pretending his life was normal just
  909. 35:01raising his children and being married
  910. 35:02to the public and the police it seemed
  911. 35:05like he literally just vanished and that
  912. 35:07everything would get back to normal for
  913. 35:09the most part there were times where he
  914. 35:11felt like the police could be closing in
  915. 35:13and believed that the next knock on the
  916. 35:15door would be the police ready to arrest
  917. 35:16him and even later said that calling the
  918. 35:19police and letting them hear his voice
  919. 35:20was one of his biggest regrets between
  920. 35:23raising his kids and faking his normal
  921. 35:25life he said that he didn't have time to
  922. 35:27kill anyone but the stalking never
  923. 35:29stopped during his longer cooling
  924. 35:32periods like this one it's not like all
  925. 35:34of a sudden his urges went away instead
  926. 35:37he would use some of his trophies like
  927. 35:40bras underwear pantyhose the pictures
  928. 35:42that he took of the bodies all to play
  929. 35:44pleasure himself in secret
  930. 35:46sometimes he would even wear a mask and
  931. 35:48wigs and wear some of the things that he
  932. 35:50took and take pictures of himself to try
  933. 35:52to replicate the crime scene and he
  934. 35:54would take these pictures of himself
  935. 35:55with a tripod that he had set up for his
  936. 35:57Polaroid camera he wanted to picture
  937. 35:59what the victims felt like when they
  938. 36:01were about to die guys the pictures he
  939. 36:03took of himself are available online if
  940. 36:05you look for them and they are
  941. 36:06disgusting and disturbing so be warned
  942. 36:09he kept some of his tokens or trophies
  943. 36:12in what he called hidey holes because at
  944. 36:14this point he had so much stuff that he
  945. 36:16couldn't keep it all inside his house he
  946. 36:18had a very detailed map of all of the
  947. 36:20locations where things were buried all
  948. 36:22over Wichita he also kept a few journals
  949. 36:25where he would draw the scenes from some
  950. 36:26of his victims another thing he would
  951. 36:29take note cards and cut out pictures of
  952. 36:31models from magazines or drawings of
  953. 36:33women with ropes and then take the note
  954. 36:35cards with him while he went on drives
  955. 36:37he pretended like the model on the note
  956. 36:40card was with him and he would start
  957. 36:41talking dirty to it then he would get
  958. 36:44home with his note card get in the
  959. 36:46shower and you know you know budger
  960. 36:49himself
  961. 36:50Dennis later admitted that the reason
  962. 36:52there weren't more victims during these
  963. 36:54years was because he had just as much
  964. 36:56fun playing with himself as he would the
  965. 36:59victims which I'm literally like
  966. 37:01vomiting over here guys that is like so
  967. 37:04disgusting to think about oh bro keep to
  968. 37:07yourself keep it to yourself
  969. 37:09his wife and children had no idea that
  970. 37:11this was ever going on however there
  971. 37:14were two occasions when he got sloppy
  972. 37:16and his wife caught him dressed in bra
  973. 37:18and nightgown type outfits with a mask
  974. 37:20on of course murder didn't pop into her
  975. 37:23head she just thought he was just
  976. 37:24dressing in her nightgowns or something
  977. 37:26and you know something's a little
  978. 37:28suspicious here and she told him this is
  979. 37:31it if you ever do this again and I catch
  980. 37:33you I will leave you and I'll take the
  981. 37:34kids too weird for me
  982. 37:36Dennis was mainly upset because he got
  983. 37:38caught but made sure that it never
  984. 37:40happened again as in getting caught
  985. 37:42again not dressing up and doing his own
  986. 37:44you know hanky-panky with himself he
  987. 37:47never stopped carrying out his fantasies
  988. 37:48even when it meant risking his life with
  989. 37:51his wife and his children
  990. 37:52in 1984 the Wichita Police Department
  991. 37:55created a task force to find BTK because
  992. 37:58they didn't believe that he just
  993. 37:59disappeared and they wanted to figure
  994. 38:01out who the madman behind the initials
  995. 38:03was the task force was called
  996. 38:06Ghostbusters
  997. 38:08by 1985 it had been eight years since
  998. 38:11his last murder and the police and
  999. 38:12public thought that maybe BTK did go
1000. 38:15away maybe he died maybe he got arrested
1001. 38:17in another state nobody was sure
1002. 38:19he was involved in church and his
  1003. 38:21children were now 10 and 7. his son
1004. 38:24joined the Cub Scouts and Dennis became
1005. 38:25the cub scout leader one of the things
1006. 38:28he enjoyed the most was teaching all of
1007. 38:30the different kinds of knots you can
1008. 38:32make uh gross you guessed it although
1009. 38:35none of those things seemed to truly
1010. 38:37matter to him because he already had his
1011. 38:39eye on his next victim
1012. 38:4153-year-old Marine hedge AKA project
1013. 38:45cookie Marine had lived on the same
  1014. 38:47block as Dennis's family for over 30
1015. 38:50years in Park City Kansas Maureen was a
1016. 38:53widow and kind and a devoted mother to
1017. 38:55her three daughters one son and
1018. 38:57grandchildren she enjoyed Bingo yard
  1019. 38:59work and attending church it's
1020. 39:01interesting because up till this point
1021. 39:03it seemed like for the most part Dennis
1022. 39:05had gone after younger women and a lot
1023. 39:07of the younger women in the Wichita
1024. 39:08Community feared being attacked the most
  1025. 39:10but as you see he didn't have a
1026. 39:13preference his Target was pretty much
  1027. 39:15anyone he chose April 27 1985 Dennis was
1028. 39:19in in the middle of one of his son's boy
1029. 39:21scout campout weekends when he claimed
1030. 39:23to have a headache and said that he
1031. 39:25needed to leave you'd think that while
1032. 39:27you're at a Boy Scout weekend for your
1033. 39:29son and you're actually one of the
1034. 39:30leaders that it would maybe seem like
1035. 39:32not a great time to go and kill someone
1036. 39:33but no Dennis knew no bounds he is truly
  1037. 39:37despicable
1038. 39:39well so much for that headache which we
1039. 39:41kind of already knew was a lie because
1040. 39:42instead he got into his car and went to
1041. 39:44a bowling alley nearby there he bought a
1042. 39:47beer and spilled some on his shirt and
1043. 39:49swished around some beer in his mouth so
1044. 39:51that he would smell like alcohol or look
1045. 39:53like he had been drinking then he got a
1046. 39:56taxi to Park City he got to Maureen's
1047. 39:58house and cut her phone line then he
1048. 40:00snuck through the back door he assumed
1049. 40:03that she would be home and to his
1050. 40:04surprise she wasn't so he waited and
1051. 40:07finally saw a car pull up into the
  1052. 40:09driveway however it wasn't just Marine
1053. 40:11coming home there was a man with her he
1054. 40:14wasn't expecting to see anybody else so
1055. 40:16he decided to hide in Maureen's closet
  1056. 40:18until the man left
1057. 40:20he didn't want to have another Kevin
1058. 40:22situation where Kevin escaped and gave
1059. 40:24the police that sketch of him finally at
1060. 40:271am the man left and Maureen went to
1061. 40:29sleep Dennis jumped out of the closet
1062. 40:31turned on the bathroom light and got on
1063. 40:33top of marine and started choking her to
1064. 40:35death once she had died he dragged her
1065. 40:37body outside into the trunk of her car
1066. 40:39he drove to the church where he was on
1067. 40:41the church Council and had keys to the
1068. 40:43building then he put black plastic over
1069. 40:46the window so that nobody could see
1070. 40:48inside and dragged her body to the
  1071. 40:50basement of the church
1072. 40:51he positioned Maureen on the altar with
1073. 40:54her body tied up in a sexually graphic
1074. 40:56form of bondage and took photographs
  1075. 40:59with a Polaroid camera before putting
1076. 41:01her body back in the trunk of the car
1077. 41:02and taking off then he dumped the body
  1078. 41:05in a ditch along a dirt road known as a
1079. 41:07dump site for dog carcasses not that far
1080. 41:10from their neighborhood in Park City
1081. 41:12he buried her body under the trees and
1082. 41:14brush when Dennis discussed this and was
1083. 41:17asked if he felt bad about doing that in
1084. 41:18a church he said something to the effect
  1085. 41:20of yeah I probably shouldn't have done
1086. 41:22that this was also the first time he
1087. 41:24took a body out of the house criminal
1088. 41:26experts have theorized that he was
1089. 41:28getting more bold and actually more
  1090. 41:30Reckless and sloppy
1091. 41:32Maureen didn't show up the next day at
1092. 41:34our job at the coffee shop and the
1093. 41:35manager and longtime friend of Marines
1094. 41:37was concerned Maureen would just never
1095. 41:39not show up and was always an extremely
  1096. 41:41Dependable worker
1097. 41:43a welfare check was done on marine and a
  1098. 41:45missing person's report went out for a
1099. 41:47marine eight days later Marine's car was
1100. 41:49found with a blanket and bed spread in
1101. 41:51the trunk police found her purse in the
1102. 41:53car but her ID was gone
1103. 41:56police searched all weekend and three
  1104. 41:58days later on May 5th 1985 Marine's body
1105. 42:01was found she was completely nude and
1106. 42:04there was a pair of pantyhose in knots
  1107. 42:06next to her body
1108. 42:07her autopsy revealed she died of
1109. 42:09strangulation her children and her
1110. 42:12grandchildren were devastated but again
  1111. 42:14Dennis walked away seemingly scot-free
1112. 42:17getting away with yet another murderer
1113. 42:20when investigating her death the police
1114. 42:22noticed that her phone line was cut and
1115. 42:24thought it could be BTK since he hadn't
1116. 42:27been caught but since her body wasn't in
1117. 42:28the house they were having trouble
  1118. 42:30making a concrete connection
  1119. 42:33by September of 1986 a little over a
1120. 42:36year since the last murder Dennis had
1121. 42:38already picked out his next Target 28
1122. 42:41year old Vicki wegerly and he started to
1123. 42:44stalk her he walked by her house during
1124. 42:46the day and listened to her play the
1125. 42:48piano while he would brainstorm and
1126. 42:49carefully plan out what he would do when
  1127. 42:51he killed her
  1128. 42:53on September 16th around 10 a.m Dennis
1129. 42:56dressed up as someone who worked for the
  1130. 42:57telephone company and went to Vicki's
1131. 42:59door she let him in thinking he was
1132. 43:01going to do maintenance on her phone
1133. 43:03line or fix it he messed with the phone
1134. 43:05for a little bit but then cut the phone
1135. 43:07line took out a gun and forced her into
1136. 43:09the bedroom as he was trying to tie her
1137. 43:12up Vicki fought back leaving some
1138. 43:14scratches and cuts on Dennis and he was
1139. 43:17not about to let her get away or Escape
1140. 43:19so he immediately got out a rope and
1141. 43:21choked her with a ton of force he took
1142. 43:24some photos of her body in different
1143. 43:25poses and then took off in Vicky's car
  1144. 43:28bill wegerly Vicki's husband actually
1145. 43:30passed Dennis in Vicky's car but later
1146. 43:33said he didn't know who was driving it
1147. 43:35when he got home he saw his two-year-old
1148. 43:38in the living room and found his wife on
1149. 43:40the floor a little bit underneath the
1150. 43:42bed Dennis got rid of any evidence
  1151. 43:44parked Vicky's car a few blocks away
1152. 43:45from her house and then walked home
1153. 43:47changed his clothes and went back to his
1154. 43:49life as a family man again like nothing
  1155. 43:53happened Vicki's husband bill was
  1156. 43:55investigated for his wife's death at
1157. 43:57first but they couldn't prove it was him
1158. 43:58and Dennis got away with another murder
1159. 44:01police had no idea that this was BTK and
1160. 44:04the case remained unsolved with now nine
1161. 44:07victims under his belt Dennis took
  1162. 44:09another five-year Hiatus disappearing
1163. 44:12and frustrating the police once again he
1164. 44:15was in his mid-40s now and proud that he
1165. 44:17was able to go undetected for so long
  1166. 44:20in 1991 Dennis's children were 15 and 13
1167. 44:23and he was still married to Paula Dennis
  1168. 44:26wanted to kill a 10th victim and wanted
1169. 44:28to plan this one out very carefully he
1170. 44:31figured that older women were more
1171. 44:33vulnerable than the younger women so he
1172. 44:35set out to find his next project and he
  1173. 44:38found her a 62 year old woman named
1174. 44:40Dolores Davis who lived alone and only
  1175. 44:43lived a mile and a half away from
  1176. 44:45Dennis's home
1177. 44:46she was a good kind and loving person he
1178. 44:49had a very well thought out plan to get
1179. 44:51what would now be his last victim he was
1180. 44:54going camping with the Cub Scouts over
1181. 44:56the weekend and thought that this would
1182. 44:57be the perfect opportunity for him to be
1183. 44:59able to get away with it without his
  1184. 45:01family knowing
  1185. 45:02on January 19 1991 he came up with
1186. 45:05another excuse to leave the Cub Scouts
1187. 45:07camping meeting then he drove his car to
1188. 45:10his parents house and changed he drove
1189. 45:12to a Baptist Church in Park City parked
  1190. 45:15and began walking
1191. 45:16once he got to her house he waited
1192. 45:18outside until he thought that she would
1193. 45:20be asleep he took a cinder block and
1194. 45:22broke out the glass on the back door to
  1195. 45:24break in
1196. 45:25this woke Dolores up and she came out of
1197. 45:28her bedroom and saw Dennis standing
1198. 45:30there he tied her up with her own
1199. 45:32pantyhose and in her bedroom he
1200. 45:34whispered in her ear I'm BTK and then
1201. 45:38strangled her like he did with Maureen
1202. 45:40he took her body and put it in the trunk
1203. 45:42of her own car then he drove it near a
1204. 45:44lake and hid the body as well as other
1205. 45:46items that he used underneath some trees
1206. 45:48he drove to a lake near Park City and
1207. 45:51hid the body and evidence underneath
1208. 45:52some trees near Park City and of course
  1209. 45:55took some photos
1210. 45:56then he drove back to her house took her
1211. 45:59jewelry box wiped down the car for
1212. 46:00fingerprints and left to go back to the
1213. 46:03Baptist Church where his car was parked
1214. 46:05once in his car he drove straight back
1215. 46:07to where Dolores was put her body in the
1216. 46:10trunk and then dumped it under a bridge
  1217. 46:12in Sedgwick County
1218. 46:13this time he went back to change into
1219. 46:15his cub scout leader uniform and went
1220. 46:17back to the camping weekend where his
1221. 46:19son and other teenage boys were Dolores
1222. 46:22had a boyfriend who came to her house
1223. 46:23the next day and saw the broken window
1224. 46:25and noticed that she was missing and he
  1225. 46:27filed a missing persons report
1226. 46:29even though Dennis was back at the camp
1227. 46:31he snuck out again the next night to go
1228. 46:34back to the body on the way back to the
1229. 46:36camp he ran into a State Trooper at a
1230. 46:39rest area and the guy said hey there was
1231. 46:40a crime we're looking for anyone out
1232. 46:42here that looks out of place and Dennis
1233. 46:44was immediately worried about that
1234. 46:46jewelry box in his car and if the
1235. 46:48trooper was going to ask to look inside
1236. 46:50but since he was in a Cub Scout uniform
1237. 46:52and explained that he was just heading
1238. 46:53back to the camping weekend the state
1239. 46:55trooper didn't think he stood out and so
1240. 46:58he left police discovered her body and
1241. 47:00later identified Dolores there was
1242. 47:02nothing in her house the car didn't have
1243. 47:04prints and there was really nothing for
1244. 47:06the police to go off of in the past
1245. 47:08police considered that Maureen and Vicki
1246. 47:10could have been killed by BTK and now
1247. 47:12possibly even Dolores but because of the
1248. 47:15huge gaps of time between and the many
  1249. 47:16differences police really didn't know
  1250. 47:19for sure
1251. 47:20after 1991 even though he never killed
1252. 47:23another victim he never stopped stalking
1253. 47:25or hunting potential projects in May of
  1254. 47:281991 he became a dog catcher and a
1255. 47:31compliance officer in Park City
1256. 47:33basically this job was just to monitor
1257. 47:35neighborhoods and make sure that homes
1258. 47:36were in compliance in a way this job
1259. 47:39gave him a reason to be out on the
1260. 47:41streets at night but this time with a
1261. 47:43uniform and an official position so he
1262. 47:46had a grandiose sense of superiority and
1263. 47:49authority over others and neighbors
1264. 47:51recalled him again as being sometimes
1265. 47:54overzealous and extremely strict as well
1266. 47:56as taking special pleasure in bullying
  1267. 47:58and harassing single women
1268. 48:0113 years passed and it was January 15
1269. 48:042004 marking the 30th anniversary of the
1270. 48:08family Massacre murders and it was also
1271. 48:1025 years since his last correspondence
  1272. 48:13with police or media
  1273. 48:15so since it was a 30th Anniversary a
1274. 48:18headline in a newspaper came out saying
  1275. 48:20after 30 years BTK remains unsolved
1276. 48:24in the article it mentioned an attorney
1277. 48:26was writing a book on BTK and his seven
1278. 48:29victims this enraged Dennis he was so
1279. 48:33arrogant that he had to be the one to
1280. 48:35tell his story his legacy and saying
1281. 48:37that it was only seven victims since the
1282. 48:39real number was 10 was unacceptable to
  1283. 48:42him
1284. 48:43this morning we have more information on
1285. 48:45the letter sent to the Wichita Eagle by
1286. 48:47the BTK killer the Wichita Eagle
  1287. 48:49received a letter from Bill Thomas
1288. 48:51killman that had a photocopy of an old
  1289. 48:54Polaroid that showed a woman's body on
  1290. 48:56the floor and a copy of the driver's
1291. 48:58license Vicki wegerly the letter also
1292. 49:01included details that only the killer
1293. 49:03would know and investigators knew that
1294. 49:05they never took pictures of her body on
1295. 49:06the floor the end of the letter had
1296. 49:09btk's signature he hoped that this would
1297. 49:12be a declaration that BTK was still out
1298. 49:14there on the loose and that people
1299. 49:16needed to be afraid with this letter in
1300. 49:19BTK claiming an eighth victim it sparked
1301. 49:22fear throughout the community who now
1302. 49:23for 25 years had thought that this
1303. 49:25Maniac had gone away died or maybe was
  1304. 49:28in prison anything they certainly didn't
1305. 49:30believe that he was living among them so
  1306. 49:32this was very upsetting
1307. 49:34then in May of 2004 another task force
1308. 49:37was set up by the Wichita Police
1309. 49:39Department made up of the FBI and kbi
1310. 49:42agents as well they were set out on
1311. 49:44finding the killer their goal was to
1312. 49:46keep BTK to continue communicating with
1313. 49:48them in hopes that he would eventually
1314. 49:50get cocky and mess up
1315. 49:52news headlines came out and said that
  1316. 49:54the killer could be a normal person a
1317. 49:57few months later another media Outlet
1318. 49:58received a letter that they believed was
1319. 50:00from BTK the letter included chapter
  1320. 50:04titles for a BTK biography almost like a
1321. 50:07guide for how the media should cover him
1322. 50:09and then there was a puzzle a find the
1323. 50:12word letter grid spelling out Clues like
1324. 50:14prowl and Fantasies Dennis loved the
1325. 50:18attention that he was getting from the
1326. 50:19media and legitimately thought that the
1327. 50:21police would never be able to find him
1328. 50:22which kind of was a fair point because
1329. 50:25it had been 30 years and nothing had
1330. 50:26happened but it was his own narcissistic
1331. 50:29attributes that were actually his demise
1332. 50:32in his screwed up game of cat and mouse
1333. 50:34he had delusions about what kind of
1334. 50:36relationship he had with some of the
1335. 50:38lead detectives in this case he thought
1336. 50:40that they respected him enough to always
1337. 50:42be honest with him and he even felt like
1338. 50:44he had a bond with some of them when he
1339. 50:46would see them on TV a few months later
1340. 50:48in 2004 he asked the police if he could
  1341. 50:51correspond directly through them with a
1342. 50:53floppy disk but the police had to
  1343. 50:55promise that they wouldn't install
1344. 50:57anything on the disk to track his
1345. 50:59computer and if the police agreed they
1346. 51:01needed to put an ad in the newspaper
1347. 51:03that said Rex it will be okay with the
1348. 51:06location of where to drop off the floppy
1349. 51:08disk when they went through the metadata
1350. 51:10of the floppy disk they were able to
1351. 51:12extract different files of different
1352. 51:14users one called Christ of the Lutheran
1353. 51:17Church in Park City and another file
1354. 51:19called Dennis I mean what an idiot like
1355. 51:22you actually are going to trust the
1356. 51:24police that they're not going to look up
1357. 51:25the digital evidence to figure out who
1358. 51:27you are a possible serial killer get
  1359. 51:30real my guy
1360. 51:32so this was a major break for the
1361. 51:34investigators they tracked him down and
1362. 51:36pretty easily since he was the president
1363. 51:38of the church Council so they finally
1364. 51:40had a name Dennis Rader but before he
1365. 51:43could be arrested the police needed to
1366. 51:45do some housekeeping on their end to
1367. 51:47make sure that the arrest would stick
1368. 51:48they went back through all of the cases
1369. 51:51starting back in 1974 and collected the
1370. 51:54DNA samples back then at this point in
1371. 51:562005 DNA had come a really long way so
1372. 51:59they were extremely lucky that the DNA
1373. 52:01evidence was all preserved correctly
1374. 52:03since some of the DNA was collected
  1375. 52:05three decades before
1376. 52:07once they analyzed it they were able to
1377. 52:10match it all to the same person then
1378. 52:13they had to figure out a way to get
1379. 52:14Dennis's DNA to get a sample to see if
  1380. 52:17it was a match
1381. 52:18someone from the kbi realized that his
1382. 52:20daughter Carrie had attended college at
1383. 52:22Kansas State University and got a court
1384. 52:24order for her records to see if they had
1385. 52:26any samples that she had maybe given at
1386. 52:28the clinic there one of the samples on
1387. 52:31file was from a feminine exam that she
  1388. 52:34had
1389. 52:35they tested the DNA and found that her
1390. 52:37DNA was one hundred percent The
  1391. 52:40Offspring of BTK
1392. 52:43shortly after that local police kbi and
1393. 52:47FBI set their eyes on Dennis and they
1394. 52:49were ready to get this guy on February
1395. 52:5125th 2005 they started tracking him with
1396. 52:54tons of undercover cars and helicopters
1397. 52:56they pulled him over yanked him out of
1398. 52:58the car and he said to the officers
  1399. 53:00would you mind telling my wife I won't
1400. 53:02be home for lunch I'm certain you know
1401. 53:05where I live when his arrest was
1402. 53:07announced by the media many women were
1403. 53:09crying with tears of joy because finally
1404. 53:11this Maniac serial killer was going to
1405. 53:13be behind bars and they wouldn't have to
1406. 53:15worry every night that they could be his
  1407. 53:17next victim it's like the community
  1408. 53:19collectively gave a major exhale his
1409. 53:22family and friends were shocked stunned
1410. 53:25and horrified his wife filed for an
1411. 53:27emergency divorce which was granted
1412. 53:28almost immediately Paula has never done
1413. 53:31any interviews and seems to want
1414. 53:33absolutely nothing to do with it however
1415. 53:35his daughter has done a lot of
  1416. 53:37interviews and has even written tell-all
1417. 53:39books none of his family had any clue
1418. 53:41what was going on like not even the
1419. 53:43slightest clue which kind of makes them
1420. 53:46victims in all of this too I literally
1421. 53:48can't imagine the horror they went
1422. 53:50through when this all came to light
1423. 53:51during his interrogation once he found
1424. 53:54out that they had DNA samples and the
1425. 53:55games were over he confessed to the
  1426. 53:58police
1427. 54:00we had moved into a room that we had
1428. 54:01prepared and he started talking and kind
1429. 54:04of danced around for a while and then
1430. 54:06they brought up the DNA these samples
  1431. 54:08were correctly preserved
1432. 54:11and they could nail him
  1433. 54:13anyway
  1434. 54:15right
  1435. 54:16you can't get out here unless you've had
1436. 54:19a total blood transfer and lost every
  1437. 54:20organ
1438. 54:21it's there and there's at the almost the
1439. 54:23exact three hour mark of them being in
1440. 54:25the room and you said you got me on BTK
  1441. 54:28I guess you guys don't well
1442. 54:35the belt that I use is where and I had
  1443. 54:37her come back
1444. 54:41it was a bad guy and she really smart
1445. 54:46he spoke for over 30 hours yeah
1446. 54:54and he showed no remorse no regret the
1447. 54:58only regret he showed during this was
1448. 55:00that there weren't more victims he told
1449. 55:02us that we would discover what he termed
  1450. 55:05his mother love
1451. 55:07there were journals and drawings he had
1452. 55:10materials that he collected from each of
1453. 55:13his victims four months later he pled
1454. 55:15guilty in court and during this the
1455. 55:16judge asked him to confess to everything
1456. 55:18he was sentenced to 10 life sentences
1457. 55:21which I think at the time in Kansas was
1458. 55:23175 years all without the possibility of
1459. 55:27parole BTK has been studied by many
1460. 55:29criminal psychologists over the years
1461. 55:31and he has had many college classes
1462. 55:33taught about him books written and even
1463. 55:36some television series mind Hunters on
1464. 55:38Netflix had a few episodes featuring BTK
1465. 55:40in their storyline but again most
1466. 55:42famously Dr Catherine ramsland developed
1467. 55:45a professional relationship with him and
1468. 55:47he agreed to tell her everything so that
1469. 55:50she could study him she has written
1470. 55:52several popular books about him as well
  1471. 55:54recently a documentary was made about
1472. 55:56BTK where she spoke about him in depth
1473. 55:58later in life as I became a professor of
  1474. 56:02forensic psychology
1475. 56:03extreme offenders were something we knew
  1476. 56:07very little about
1477. 56:08and I wanted to contribute to that
1478. 56:12I published 68 books and have four more
  1479. 56:15in the works
1480. 56:18not only do I write about serial killers
  1481. 56:20I'm constantly teaching I do police
  1482. 56:23trainings I do a broad variety of
1483. 56:27activities all surrounding my knowledge
  1484. 56:30of extreme offenders
1485. 56:33a lot of myths have cropped up about
1486. 56:36serial killers so I especially want to
1487. 56:39study cases that show that these myths
  1488. 56:43just don't work
1489. 56:45and law enforcement needs to understand
  1490. 56:47this so that they don't dismiss a
  1491. 56:50potential suspect too soon
1492. 56:53one of the reasons I wanted to work with
1493. 56:56him was to look at someone who appears
  1494. 56:59to be an outlier
1495. 57:01and see what he teaches us
  1496. 57:06because he's not unique
1497. 57:10there are others who have been family
  1498. 57:13men churchgoers
1499. 57:15seemingly normal people who have these
1500. 57:19thoughts and sometimes act on these
  1501. 57:21thoughts
1502. 57:23and so I think it's important for us to
1503. 57:25not just understand them but also treat
1504. 57:29them before they become serial killers
1505. 57:34most recently Dr ramsland has been in
1506. 57:36the media because Dr ramsland actually
1507. 57:38taught the suspect of the Idaho murders
  1508. 57:41Brian coburger BTK didn't get enjoyment
1509. 57:43out of people in pain he liked the worry
1510. 57:46the fear and the suffering that he
1511. 57:48inflicted on his victims that's what he
1512. 57:51enjoyed the most and he called this his
1513. 57:53factor x which Dr ramsland really thinks
1514. 57:56it's just something he refers to because
1515. 57:58she believes this makes him feel special
  1516. 58:00like he has a supernatural mystifying
1517. 58:02element about him so that she needs him
1518. 58:04so she can study him but she believes
1519. 58:06it's just a way to not take any
1520. 58:08accountability for any of his actions
1521. 58:10she also said that the one thing that
1522. 58:12BTK can't get over is that the police
1523. 58:14didn't respect him enough to not lie to
1524. 58:17him specifically about the floppy disk
1525. 58:20she said his narcissism makes him
1526. 58:22completely blind to the fact that they
1527. 58:24were never his friends and never enjoyed
1528. 58:26this game of cat and mouse they're
1529. 58:28talking to Raider and Lieutenant land
1530. 58:31where pulls up in a Ziploc evidence
1531. 58:33baggie with the purple floppy disk in it
1532. 58:36he slides it in front of raider and says
1533. 58:39know what this is Dennis Raider starts
  1534. 58:42poking his finger
1535. 58:45forcefully on this floppy disk
  1536. 58:48and he says I got a question I need to
1537. 58:51ask sure if you like
1538. 58:55oh anyway because I was trying to catch
1539. 58:58it she has also said that most serial
  1540. 59:00killers aren't very creative and this
1541. 59:02was especially true for BTK he did a lot
1542. 59:05of CopyCat things from previous serial
1543. 59:07killers and even things he read about in
1544. 59:09detective magazines like changing the
1545. 59:11thermostat of the homes to really hot
  1546. 59:12taking photographs of women's suffering
1547. 59:14those were all things that other serial
1548. 59:17killers had done first so I want to go
1549. 59:18back to btk's many applications to all
1550. 59:21of the different law enforcement
1551. 59:22agencies that he didn't get hired for
1552. 59:24when he got his bachelor's degree in
1553. 59:27administrative Justice Dr ramsland said
1554. 59:29that because of this study he felt like
1555. 59:31he knew more and could be a better
1556. 59:32Predator she also said that serial
1557. 59:35killers who are attracted to law
  1558. 59:36enforcement know that a police officer
1559. 59:38is in a position to know a lot more
1560. 59:40about potential victims and they can
  1561. 59:42approach people with a sense of
  1562. 59:44authority like flashing a badge and
1563. 59:46being in uniform which thank God he was
1564. 59:48never hired for any of those jobs
  1565. 59:50because that is terrifying
1566. 59:52did you ever think about
1567. 59:55what it would be like for you if
1568. 59:58somebody entered your home and did
1569. 1:00:00something like that to your wife
1570. 1:00:04for sure doing everything possible to
1571. 1:00:07protect my my wife or my kids but I mean
1572. 1:00:09what if you found her dead murdered what
1573. 1:00:12would that have been like for you
1574. 1:00:14oh that would have been very upsetting
1575. 1:00:16it's like Revenge has come back on me
1576. 1:00:21when I asked him what would happen if he
1577. 1:00:23came home and found someone had murdered
1578. 1:00:25his wife there's no sense of outrage or
1579. 1:00:29or horror that somebody could have done
  1580. 1:00:32this to his family it's it's more
  1581. 1:00:36resignation oh well Karma
1582. 1:00:39instead of empathizing with his loved
1583. 1:00:42one suffering he's only able to see how
1584. 1:00:45their possible demise would affect him
1585. 1:00:48and guys I'm just gonna say not for
1586. 1:00:49nothing but going back to those
1587. 1:00:51parallels with Brian learning things
1588. 1:00:53from his education wanting to be in a
  1589. 1:00:55position of authority a trusted position
1590. 1:00:57and taking bits and pieces from other
1591. 1:01:00serial killers BTK did that is that what
1592. 1:01:03Brian was doing as well and was one of
1593. 1:01:04those serial killers BTK was another
1594. 1:01:07person mass murderer Elliot Roger did he
1595. 1:01:10try to mess up the profile this story is
1596. 1:01:13dark disgusting and showcases the
1597. 1:01:16absolute bottom of the barrel scum of
  1598. 1:01:18humanity Killers like BTK are a
1599. 1:01:21sombering reminder that there are
1600. 1:01:23literally Monsters Among Us which is
  1601. 1:01:25terrifying there aren't really words for
1602. 1:01:27it I'd imagine this is very much like
1603. 1:01:29how the Moscow Idaho community was
1604. 1:01:31recently feeling in the wake of the
  1605. 1:01:33recent quadruple homicide BTK was a
  1606. 1:01:36church leader had a family yet
  1607. 1:01:37simultaneously thought he was a monster
1608. 1:01:39but also someone who was a good person
1609. 1:01:41who did bad things all while killing 10
1610. 1:01:43people over three decades for his own
1611. 1:01:45depraved and heinous fantasies it is a
  1612. 1:01:48mind warp I can't imagine how gaslit and
1613. 1:01:51Confused I'd feel if I were one of his
1614. 1:01:53children or his spouse and my heart
1615. 1:01:55truly goes out to them his daughter
1616. 1:01:57Carrie has done several interviews as
1617. 1:01:59well as well as writing that tell-all
  1618. 1:02:01book I mentioned
1619. 1:02:02Karen Rawson was 26 years old on the day
1620. 1:02:05she learned her father was the
1621. 1:02:07cold-blooded killer known as BTK the man
  1622. 1:02:10responsible for killing 10 people and
1623. 1:02:12terrorizing Wichita Kansas for decades
1624. 1:02:15what do you remember about that day
1625. 1:02:16there's a knock on my door and he said
  1626. 1:02:18he was the FBI
1627. 1:02:19and then he says your dad has been
  1628. 1:02:21arrested as BTK
  1629. 1:02:24and I was like I think I'm gonna pass
1630. 1:02:26out how would you describe your
1631. 1:02:28childhood with your father I pretty much
1632. 1:02:30had the American dream you know like the
1633. 1:02:32three bedroom ranch with the big
1634. 1:02:34backyard and the Springer Spaniel dog
  1635. 1:02:37and then
1636. 1:02:38um when I was four he built a massive
1637. 1:02:40tree house for my brother and I it was
1638. 1:02:43extremely out of the characteristic of
1639. 1:02:45my father to be physically abusive after
1640. 1:02:48the last killing in 1991 life went on
1641. 1:02:51for the Raider family Carrie going off
1642. 1:02:53to college and meeting her future
  1643. 1:02:55husband
1644. 1:02:56he just seemed like another regular
  1645. 1:02:58Wichita dad to me
  1646. 1:03:00[Music]
1647. 1:03:052003 my dad walked me down
  1648. 1:03:09ing
  1649. 1:03:11BTK is arrested
1650. 1:03:14this man 59 year old Dennis radar is the
  1651. 1:03:16BTK
1652. 1:03:17cadler and you were still at that point
1653. 1:03:19convinced that they had the wrong man I
1654. 1:03:21think reality was starting to creep in
1655. 1:03:24and I felt my stomach just twist
1656. 1:03:26realizing it could be true
1657. 1:03:29one minute you had a man in your life
1658. 1:03:31who you thought was a loving father the
  1659. 1:03:34next minute he's a serial killer right I
1660. 1:03:37had to learn how to grieve the loss of
1661. 1:03:39somebody I loved very much that no one
1662. 1:03:42else loved anymore BTK was once one of
1663. 1:03:45the most terrifying serial killers in
1664. 1:03:47America in the 20th century luckily for
1665. 1:03:50society BTK will be in prison for the
1666. 1:03:52rest of his life in a small cell just
1667. 1:03:54given three meals and only allowed to do
1668. 1:03:56what the prison allows him to do which
1669. 1:03:58is pretty ironic since all of his crimes
1670. 1:04:00were about control and power and now he
1671. 1:04:02has zero power at all
1672. 1:04:05sometimes I wonder if with all the
1673. 1:04:06technology and resources that law
1674. 1:04:08enforcement has today if there will ever
1675. 1:04:10be serial killers like this again in the
1676. 1:04:12future I go back and forth on whether or
  1677. 1:04:14not it's possible but I like to know
1678. 1:04:16what you guys think in the comments do
1679. 1:04:18you think modern science and technology
1680. 1:04:19will prevent serial predators in the
1681. 1:04:22future by catching them before they can
1682. 1:04:23go on a spree or do you think they will
1683. 1:04:25find another way to go undetected let me
1684. 1:04:28know below another thing I keep thinking
1685. 1:04:30about is how BTK modeled other serial
1686. 1:04:33killers like in a way he wanted to be
1687. 1:04:35like these so-called Legends in his mind
1688. 1:04:37or at least categorized as such and I
1689. 1:04:40don't think this phenomenon is solely
  1690. 1:04:42specific to BTK
1691. 1:04:44scary to think that there are probably
1692. 1:04:45other people known in the world who look
1693. 1:04:47up to a guy like this maybe somebody
1694. 1:04:50like Brian coburger thanks so much for
1695. 1:04:52tuning in with me today guys I hope you
  1696. 1:04:54appreciated the case coverage and I'm
1697. 1:04:56eager to know your thoughts below do you
1698. 1:04:58see any similarities or Parallels
1699. 1:05:00between BTK and Brian or do you think
1700. 1:05:03it's all a coincidence let me know
1701. 1:05:05thanks again and don't forget hit that
