- 0:41hi my lovelies welcome back to truth
- 0:43crime with me emma kenny wouldn't it be
- 0:45weird if one day i said that and there
- 0:46was just somebody else here the way my
- 0:48mind goes it's like welcome back to true
- 0:50crime with me
- 0:52john smith
- 0:54just in case any john smiths are
- 0:55listening now maybe we could organize
- 0:57some kind of exchange
- 0:59today i'm going to be covering a case
- 1:01that i've wanted to cover for a very
- 1:02long time but i also wanted to try to
- 1:05get as much research done as possible so
- 1:07before i start i'm always going to say a
- 1:09big thank you to my patreon followers
- 1:11i'm appreciating the subs can't quite
- 1:13believe that you do also just a reminder
- 1:15to those of you who are supporting me on
- 1:17patreon don't if you can't afford it it
- 1:20panics me sometimes genuinely i mean
- 1:23it's amazing but i don't want anyone
- 1:25ever to feel any kind of need to support
- 1:29me unless they are in a situation where
- 1:30they can afford to but
- 1:32nonetheless i am deeply appreciative
- 1:36the case i'm going to cover today there
- 1:38is a documentary on and i would really
- 1:40recommend you watching it and i'll put a
- 1:42link so that you can kind of look at
- 1:44that documentary because i watched this
- 1:47when it first came out and then when i
- 1:49started doing the true crime channel i
- 1:51thought at some point i'm gonna cover it
- 1:54but i needed to find out as much as i
- 1:56could that wasn't simply taken from the
- 1:59documentary if that makes sense although
- 2:00understandably the victim's story is the
- 2:03most important and real-life account
- 2:05that there can be
- 2:07this is on a woman called alison bother
- 2:10so she went through a heinous attack
- 2:13that i'm going to outline
- 2:15but before i do
- 2:17because this is going to concentrate a
- 2:18lot more on her story because it's a
- 2:21first account of it she tells it i also
- 2:24want to just bring in who her attackers
- 2:26were because man
- 2:29there is not a lot
- 2:31of stuff out there
- 2:32about the histories of her attackers
- 2:35nonetheless
- 2:36i have done my best so there were two
- 2:39attackers in this case and i'm just
- 2:41going to tell you a little bit about
- 2:42them before we get into the main area of
- 2:44what actually happened to allison and
- 2:46her
- 2:47unbelievably inspiring
- 2:50recovery
- 2:52i'm going to say that
- 2:53right from the get-go
- 2:55this is a story of hope and resilience
- 2:59but it begins with
- 3:02sinister evil behavior that
- 3:06very few of us could even imagine
- 3:08surviving
- 3:10the perpetrators were franz de trois
- 3:13and tien's kruger
- 3:16i hope i've got the pronunciations right
- 3:18so i'm just going to refer to them as
- 3:19franz and tien's purely because alison
- 3:22refers to them that way in her
- 3:24documentary so it will make sense if you
- 3:26watch it after this that it's in line
- 3:29with her description
- 3:30so franz de tois who was he well he came
- 3:33from a reasonably good family his father
- 3:35was a police officer would you believe
- 3:37it he was known at school to be quite a
- 3:40lazy student so the people that he was
- 3:44surrounded by said that he wasn't
- 3:45somebody who made a lot of effort he was
- 3:48brought up in a deeply religious family
- 3:49they were christian
- 3:51he did not feel that he connected with
- 3:54the christian faith we'll talk about
- 3:56what he believed in in a minute he
- 3:58actually set fire to his school
- 4:00dormitory
- 4:01at 13.
- 4:05i know straight away you're like
- 4:0713
- 4:08setting fire to things what scale does
- 4:11that remind me of and you'd be right it
- 4:13is a big red flag as far as psychopathy
- 4:16goes not saying that i can say he is one
- 4:18just saying bit of an indicator of red
- 4:20flag
- 4:21he gets expelled unsurprisingly and
- 4:25one of the reasons that he blames his
- 4:27behavior
- 4:28such as setting fire to things not doing
- 4:30well at school is that he is influenced
- 4:32by
- 4:34heavy metal music i know
- 4:36like even i at this point i'm like
- 4:38really
- 4:40were you playing the records backwards
- 4:42what were you doing like who gets
- 4:44influenced by heavy metal music and
- 4:46don't pretend a lot of people do because
- 4:48boys in particular very rarely listen
- 4:51deeply to lyrics and imagine what's
- 4:52going on in them but anyway he says at
- 4:54this age he's deeply influenced by heavy
- 4:56metal music and he feels that it like
- 4:58turns him towards a darker side i
- 5:00appreciate that that's his experience
- 5:03i'm just saying
- 5:04i've listened to a lot of her meta music
- 5:06a lot of you have and i don't think any
- 5:08of us are setting fire to our schools
- 5:11unless some of you have in which case
- 5:12comment below whether his family were
- 5:14embarrassed or whether they genuinely
- 5:16needed to move it ended up that after
- 5:18the fire they moved 93 miles away
- 5:21understandably it would be really
- 5:22awkward for franz's father being that he
- 5:25was a police officer that is not going
- 5:27to engrace yourself to the local
- 5:29constabulary when your son is just
- 5:31randomly setting fire to schools
- 5:33at this point when he's still a young
- 5:36teenager he meets a girl and she
- 5:39basically says that she's a witch
- 5:41she's also
- 5:42something i find really useful on dating
- 5:44profiles you know if you look in just
- 5:46like what's my speciality
- 5:49i'm a witch
- 5:50like
- 5:51the only reason i would believe that
- 5:53somebody was a witch is if literally
- 5:55they could do a trick like i say
- 5:58create
- 5:59a cake now and they just go boom and the
- 6:01cake's there unless you can do that i
- 6:03don't believe you i'm just saying maybe
- 6:05i have high standards but
- 6:06just saying you're a witch is not enough
- 6:08but nonetheless they get sexually
- 6:10involved they're both very young so we
- 6:12know that he's having sex early and that
- 6:14he has some kind of interest in shall we
- 6:16say
- 6:17the darker side of life please before
- 6:19somebody screams at me that there are
- 6:20white witches i know there are i know
- 6:22there are good witches i know there are
- 6:23bad witches i'm just saying that she was
- 6:25one of the
- 6:26bad witches
- 6:28i feel like i'm talking about the wizard
- 6:29of oz right now i really do you catch my
- 6:32drift right so basically
- 6:34he's having sex with a girl who says
- 6:36that she's a witch and she's into dark
- 6:38practices and apparently
- 6:40still as teenagers they start doing
- 6:42these incantations where she incites
- 6:45demons
- 6:47and he apparently becomes possessed
- 6:50at this point when he's about 13 14 he
- 6:52decides that he's a satanist so this is
- 6:55disturbing behavior for somebody of this
- 6:56age right
- 6:58arguably as well it can be that when you
- 6:59feel quite isolated and you don't feel
- 7:01like you connect that you'll find things
- 7:03to cling on to so it is possible that
- 7:06young people get involved with things
- 7:07that they shouldn't get involved with
- 7:09just to be cool or to feel like they
- 7:11have connections admit it how many of us
- 7:13did ouija boards
- 7:15i did a lot of ouija boards if it is
- 7:17possible to be possessed by the devil or
- 7:18demons i think i probably should have
- 7:20because we did a lot of them
- 7:23did you let me know
- 7:25also it's at this point when he starts
- 7:27having sex that he really recognises it
- 7:29is having these kind of dark fantasies
- 7:31when he's having sex he thinks about
- 7:32what it'd be like to rape women and he
- 7:35plays them out whilst having sex so we
- 7:37also see this really disturbing behavior
- 7:40he's starting to have sexual
- 7:41relationships early but the way that
- 7:43he's actually feeling turned on is to
- 7:45imagine what it would be like to have
- 7:47non-consensual sex he's obviously
- 7:49engaged and shall we say things that are
- 7:51not positive for an adolescent of his
- 7:52age and it doesn't feel like he has
- 7:55concerns about it if anything it's
- 7:57something that he kind of incites more
- 8:00and more
- 8:01he's really average at school in fact
- 8:02his peers know that he's very lazy when
- 8:04he's 14 he has to do the year twice so
- 8:07he's not excelling it's not that he
- 8:08isn't bright it's that he's choosing not
- 8:11to do well
- 8:12so his parents eventually sent him into
- 8:14the army
- 8:15and basically when he's there he spends
- 8:18three months of his time in the
- 8:19detention barracks
- 8:21so
- 8:22he has problems with authority he's an
- 8:24individual who doesn't like being told
- 8:27what to do
- 8:29after he's essentially let go of from
- 8:31the army his parents then help him to
- 8:33get a job and that's a job in a mine in
- 8:36welcome which is in the free state in
- 8:39south africa now
- 8:41at this point he does manage to meet
- 8:42somebody he meets a woman gets married
- 8:46and he has a child
- 8:48but then
- 8:49pretty shortly after having the child
- 8:51he leaves his wife because
- 8:53she didn't satisfy him sexually that was
- 8:55his reason
- 8:58franz sounds like a delight doesn't he
- 9:01when he's not having sex with witches
- 9:03he's blaming his wife for her inadequacy
- 9:06when we all know that it will certainly
- 9:07be him with the problem
- 9:09it's also worth noting that before the
- 9:11attack on allison that we're going to
- 9:13cover he had raped several women before
- 9:15so he was quite happy to act alone and i
- 9:18hate this category of rapists
- 9:21and a lot of you will be like what
- 9:22category what is this category there is
- 9:24this category of rapist
- 9:27known as the gentleman rapist
- 9:30there is no such thing as a gentleman
- 9:32rapist obviously but what they mean by
- 9:34that is the fantasy that the rapist
- 9:37constructs with his victim is that she's
- 9:39enjoying it so he will often talk to her
- 9:43try to charm her in bizarre ways ask
- 9:46whether she likes it makes her say that
- 9:48she's enjoying things that clearly she
- 9:50would never like and almost is using his
- 9:54wiles in his belief system to make what
- 9:56his behavior is acceptable
- 9:59so that's the kind of rapist he is he
- 10:01isn't the huge aggressive predator he's
- 10:05much more a predator who then disguises
- 10:07in his own beliefs his behavior by
- 10:10acting like he cares about what he's
- 10:12doing
- 10:13i think we can safely say by this point
- 10:15he has fitted quite a lot of the
- 10:17psychopath scale qualities can't we like
- 10:20i said can't diagnose him but i think
- 10:22we're all on the same page there
- 10:24now in 1995 he moves to port elizabeth
- 10:28that's again because his parents have
- 10:30helped him out
- 10:31they gave him some employment this time
- 10:32as a driver for a chain of stationery
- 10:34shops and it's going really well until
- 10:37they find out that he's stealing from
- 10:39his employer yes he's stealing money
- 10:41from his employer
- 10:43just a really great kind of employee
- 10:45isn't a great kind of husband just a
- 10:47great kind of human in general basically
- 10:49gets a suspended sentence of three years
- 10:52and at this point he thinks okay well
- 10:54what will i do i'll open a she bean
- 10:58i didn't know what one of those were
- 10:59either basically it's a place where you
- 11:01sell alcohol illegally that's where he
- 11:04meets tian's johann kruger that's in
- 11:061994.
- 11:08and he is the other perpetrator he is
- 11:10the accomplice in this crime
- 11:12so let's look at teens tien's is
- 11:14different
- 11:15when you look at his childhood because
- 11:18his childhood hadn't according to him
- 11:20been very happy his father left his mum
- 11:22shortly after she got pregnant and then
- 11:25his father actually went to prison
- 11:26himself so potentially we have a bit of
- 11:28a genetic link there or at least a
- 11:30social conditioning wing his mum was
- 11:32married three times which i understand
- 11:34would be quite difficult for any child
- 11:36and he did experience violence he also
- 11:39suggested that he was sexually abused by
- 11:41his stepfather as a child what i will
- 11:44say is that his stepfather has
- 11:46vehemently denied this entirely and said
- 11:49that he will sue people who claim that
- 11:51that was the case so it has been very
- 11:54very much resisted on his stepfather's
- 11:57part i will also let it be known that it
- 11:59was much later on that he claimed this
- 12:01and i think potentially there was
- 12:03reasoning behind it so that people
- 12:05understood his actions more so make what
- 12:08you will of whether this individual
- 12:09really was abused or whether he used it
- 12:12as a ruse to try to get an easier
- 12:14sentence who knows i'm just giving you
- 12:15the information he also felt suicidal at
- 12:18times and he seriously contemplated
- 12:20suicide on at least one occasion
- 12:23he had a lot of bullying at school
- 12:25and the reason for that which to you and
- 12:28i this will seem ridiculous now
- 12:30because honestly i just don't think kids
- 12:34would react in the same way i know kids
- 12:36are bullies still but he had a third
- 12:38nipple so they called him dretit which
- 12:41is three tit so
- 12:43it really used to get to him they had
- 12:45this third nipple and it meant he felt
- 12:47isolated and it meant that he felt quite
- 12:48rageful towards his peers
- 12:51tien's also really struggled to get
- 12:52sexual satisfaction with partners
- 12:55because no one wanted to sleep with him
- 12:56like literally that was the issue he was
- 12:58frustrated because he couldn't find
- 13:01consenting partners he was angry with
- 13:04women because they wouldn't have sex
- 13:06with him
- 13:08there's a whole lot wrong with that idea
- 13:11but when you think about the rise in in
- 13:13cells at the moment for those of you who
- 13:15don't know what incels are they are
- 13:17young men particularly who feel really
- 13:19angry that women won't sleep with them
- 13:22and they get really rageful and they
- 13:24really incite one another on because
- 13:26they feel that women should just be
- 13:27willingly parting their legs for them
- 13:29essentially that's their philosophy and
- 13:31they blame women not themselves they're
- 13:34not like maybe i need to go on a charm
- 13:35course maybe i need to think about the
- 13:37way that i ask questions at dinner in an
- 13:39appropriate manner maybe i need to think
- 13:41about some interesting dates to take
- 13:42them you know they don't think like that
- 13:43they're like it's the woman who isn't
- 13:45wanting to sleep with me it's her fault
- 13:46so he kind of had that similar rage and
- 13:49felt really upset that he couldn't find
- 13:51partners now similarly to franz it seems
- 13:54that tien's believed in the devil too
- 13:57satan is very popular in this case and
- 14:00his nicknames by people who knew him
- 14:02were
- 14:03damien
- 14:04as in
- 14:05from the movie
- 14:07the omen
- 14:08and chucky as in the murderous little
- 14:11weird doll from chad's play so he was
- 14:14obviously considered a really
- 14:16well-adjusted young man
- 14:20one of the things that was noted by
- 14:21people who knew him was that he just had
- 14:22absolutely no feelings for anyone
- 14:24although and i'll take a quote he liked
- 14:27the ant he had been living with because
- 14:29she gave him food and is friendly
- 14:33a part of me wants to laugh because
- 14:34obviously that's the lowest bar ever and
- 14:36a part of me wants to go okay so we can
- 14:39assume that tien's had a difficult life
- 14:41right because
- 14:42if that's your bar well she didn't hurt
- 14:44me and she did feed me occasionally that
- 14:47is not a good place so i'm gonna say
- 14:48tien's unlike friends had a difficult
- 14:50life growing up he also got involved in
- 14:52drugs and alcohol really early on we
- 14:54know that that can affect the developing
- 14:55brain not giving him any excuses for
- 14:58what he did i'm saying the contributing
- 15:00factors towards are more exampled in his
- 15:03upbringing than in france's upbringing
- 15:05like a lot of individuals who maybe
- 15:07don't feel that they've got direction
- 15:09just like franz when he left school he
- 15:11joined the army
- 15:12and
- 15:13bizarrely enough
- 15:15also claimed to have an intense sexual
- 15:17relationship with a satanic witch
- 15:22maybe it's the same one
- 15:24maybe that's her witchery
- 15:27she just finds strange men to bamboozle
- 15:32with her witchy wiles
- 15:34either way both friends and teens claim
- 15:36to have had
- 15:38sex with a satanic witch consensual most
- 15:41probably as well which was unusual with
- 15:44rmo
- 15:45i have to say
- 15:47whether that's true or otherwise i don't
- 15:49know but it's their story it's also
- 15:52worth noting that tianzi's mum said that
- 15:54her reflection on his childhood was that
- 15:56actually they were quite close and they
- 15:57did have fun but she also acknowledges
- 15:59that she hardly had any contact with him
- 16:01as he got older
- 16:02which i find strange because
- 16:04i can't go more
- 16:06than
- 16:08seven hours before
- 16:10wanting a gps tag put on my child
- 16:13like literally that not normal parenting
- 16:15so the idea of not being in contact with
- 16:17my kid for like years just would not
- 16:18happen
- 16:19also a psychiatrist who evaluated chins
- 16:22said that he suffered really badly from
- 16:24low self-image he seemed incredibly easy
- 16:27to influence and the the whole premise
- 16:30about satanism was about wanting to
- 16:32belong he wanted to belong and shion's
- 16:35also had this thing about wanting to
- 16:37have the power of being a demon
- 16:40so he felt that
- 16:43being himself was not enough
- 16:45there was something lacking about him
- 16:47maybe it was his sexual prowess maybe it
- 16:50was his conscience around the reality
- 16:51that he couldn't hold down good
- 16:52relationships and maybe it was his
- 16:54desire to belong to something or someone
- 16:57so the consequence of that is that
- 16:58satanism influences him more than it
- 17:01should and franz when he meets him gives
- 17:04him that perfect opportunity to practice
- 17:06that sense of being more dominant and i
- 17:09guess that if you felt weak and
- 17:10powerless and people are taking the mick
- 17:12out of you for having your third nipple
- 17:14the idea of being able to destroy them
- 17:16as a demon potentially would satisfy you
- 17:19in your imagination if nothing else so
- 17:21you've got this perfect match aren't you
- 17:22franz is the conscience-free manipulator
- 17:25and chun's is the acceptance-seeking
- 17:27impressionable misfit who no one really
- 17:30likes
- 17:31also noted when i did the research on my
- 17:33personalities again not a lot is out
- 17:35there but it definitely appears that
- 17:37franz was the one who needed to be
- 17:39dominant all the time
- 17:41for example when they were selecting
- 17:42victims it was him who selected them
- 17:45when it was the initial approach to the
- 17:47victim it was friends who went and did
- 17:49it
- 17:50he was the one who gave the orders that
- 17:52doesn't make tians in any way shape or
- 17:55form less guilty i'm just saying that's
- 17:57how the relationship played out right so
- 18:00now i've got you to understand a little
- 18:02bit about the psychology and the history
- 18:05of those two perpetrators let's tell you
- 18:07the story of elephant bother which i
- 18:08promise you will be worth listening to
- 18:11so who was alison bother she was born on
- 18:13september the 22nd 1967 in port
- 18:16elizabeth south africa her parents were
- 18:19divorced when she was 10 years old and
- 18:21she spent most of her childhood living
- 18:23with her mother and brother she was very
- 18:25very close to her family in her early
- 18:27years she was a really good girl she
- 18:29lived what would be considered a normal
- 18:31life whatever one of those is an average
- 18:33life she served as a head girl at a
- 18:35school so obviously she was bright that
- 18:37was the colliergate high school for
- 18:38girls in port elizabeth and when she
- 18:40finished her education she actually went
- 18:42traveling for about three years so she
- 18:44obviously had some real wonderlust and
- 18:46there would have been a confidence there
- 18:47wouldn't there to be able to go and
- 18:49travel like that so after she returned
- 18:51home one of the things that her mum said
- 18:52was that she was really glad because she
- 18:54spent that entire three years just being
- 18:56worried about her which you would i
- 18:58completely understand that she did go to
- 19:00secretarial school as well so she had
- 19:03got herself educated but she did feel
- 19:05that she didn't necessarily have a
- 19:06particular dream
- 19:08now alison found a job when she came
- 19:10back from traveling as an insurance
- 19:11broker she really enjoyed it and she was
- 19:13great at it
- 19:14when you listen to alice and talk about
- 19:16herself she's like she wasn't
- 19:17outstanding
- 19:19but
- 19:20the fact that she was head girl
- 19:22the fact that she traveled the world the
- 19:25fact that she did well when she got jobs
- 19:26i think she probably
- 19:28has a bit of an issue with humility
- 19:30because to me if you've been a head girl
- 19:32it means that you are outstanding at
- 19:34your school but if you listen to her
- 19:35describe herself she'll tell you a
- 19:37different story she's also incredibly
- 19:39beautiful really beautiful on december
- 19:42the 18th 1994 alison is returning back
- 19:45home after she's had a night out with
- 19:46her friends she's just dropped one of
- 19:47her friends off and she gets back just
- 19:50about to get out of her car when the
- 19:52passenger door swings open and she
- 19:54doesn't even have a moment to do
- 19:56anything when she finds herself with a
- 19:58knife against her throat
- 19:59and this guy is saying to her move over
- 20:02or i'll kill you
- 20:03can you imagine how terrifying that
- 20:05would be
- 20:06so in the blink of an eye she goes from
- 20:09celebrating it's near christmas with all
- 20:11of her friends to having a guy
- 20:13with a knife against her neck
- 20:16threatening to kill her now even though
- 20:18he's put a knife to her throat and
- 20:19driven her away
- 20:21he hasn't actually said he's going to
- 20:23hurt her in fact he's saying i just need
- 20:24to use your car for an hour introduces
- 20:26himself as clinton this is actually
- 20:28friends by the way he tells her that he
- 20:31just wants to use a car for an hour and
- 20:33it will be fine
- 20:34he also starts asking the questions like
- 20:36do you have a boyfriend which is hugely
- 20:37inappropriate no one wants to answer
- 20:38that when you just kidnap me at
- 20:40knifepoint
- 20:41and alison says in her own words that
- 20:44when he was having that conversation she
- 20:46kind of convinced herself that it'd be
- 20:48okay
- 20:49that maybe this was a situation where
- 20:51she'd been carjacked he'd use the car
- 20:53he'd let her go
- 20:54that was her hope
- 20:56but then he stops the car and he picks
- 20:59up another person and that's teens and
- 21:02she says the moment that she saw teens
- 21:04in the rear-view mirror she realized
- 21:06that she was in trouble
- 21:07she said that he looked absolutely dead
- 21:10behind the eyes
- 21:12and that she knew in that moment that
- 21:14she was in danger that something bad was
- 21:15going to happen i mean i don't think she
- 21:16could have predicted what happened but
- 21:19certainly
- 21:20it chilled her
- 21:22they then drive
- 21:24a long way and she's being taken away
- 21:26from all residential areas and she
- 21:28realizes that she has no idea where
- 21:30she's going but it's a long way from
- 21:32home
- 21:33they then pull over the car into
- 21:35basically an alcove the alcove where
- 21:37they pulled was off-road and it was down
- 21:39a track it was a really sandy area and
- 21:41it had like all barbecues there and
- 21:43things like that so there were literally
- 21:44no witnesses around at all she was
- 21:46completely on her own
- 21:48and they actually asked her
- 21:51are you gonna put up a fight
- 21:54now
- 21:54think about that
- 21:56these two guys armed
- 21:58in the middle of nowhere
- 22:01no witnesses
- 22:02no one to save you
- 22:04and they're asking you are you gonna
- 22:05fight
- 22:06clearly you're gonna be like no i'll be
- 22:09as compliant as hell please leave me
- 22:11alone
- 22:12franz forces there to have oral sex and
- 22:15then he does the same to her and one of
- 22:16the things that she really struggles
- 22:18with in the documentary and when she
- 22:20talks about this in interviews is that
- 22:21she had an orgasm now for people
- 22:24listening you might be horrified by that
- 22:26but it's actually a protective mechanism
- 22:28also think about high anxiety and the
- 22:30way that places look at soul and
- 22:31adrenaline levels and understand that
- 22:33this is something that rape victims
- 22:35really struggle with so it is not
- 22:36unusual can you imagine how awful that
- 22:39is can you imagine how terrible it is
- 22:41for anybody who is violated to orgasm it
- 22:44feels like your body is completely
- 22:46betraying you doesn't it but it's not
- 22:48it's a protective mechanism it's why
- 22:49women should never feel ashamed of
- 22:52having that conversation it's why alison
- 22:54talks about it because in that moment
- 22:57your body is in defense mode it will do
- 22:59whatever it needs to survive
- 23:02after she's been raped by friends
- 23:06he actually asks tians whether he wants
- 23:07to do the same but he wants to have sex
- 23:09with her
- 23:10and
- 23:11tians makes it clear that he doesn't
- 23:13want to have sex with her instead he
- 23:14wants to f her
- 23:17and this is where that
- 23:18ridiculous psychology that franz has
- 23:21comes in
- 23:22he actually says that tn shouldn't use
- 23:25language like that in front of a lady
- 23:27that alison is really classy
- 23:30but for alison there's this clear
- 23:32recognition
- 23:33that franz was bad enough but tien's is
- 23:37another level
- 23:38and when he starts having sex with her
- 23:40he also starts to choke her
- 23:42some discussion takes place between the
- 23:44men as well
- 23:45and that is
- 23:46that they think that they're going to
- 23:47have to kill her so she's hearing this
- 23:50can you imagine how terrifying that
- 23:51would be
- 23:53so she's been raped
- 23:55she's been kidnapped she's in the middle
- 23:57of nowhere
- 23:58and now the perpetrators are talking
- 24:00about murdering her
- 24:03and the attack
- 24:04on alison
- 24:05is
- 24:06horrific she was stabbed multiple times
- 24:10and alison said that she actually
- 24:12remembered thinking at the time that
- 24:14franz specifically wanted to mutilate
- 24:17her reproductive organs
- 24:19that that was what he was aiming for
- 24:22and actually they were really annoyed
- 24:23because they thought they killed her and
- 24:25then her leg twitched
- 24:27so then
- 24:28tiens took over
- 24:30and that's when together
- 24:34they slit a throat 17 times just let
- 24:37that sink in
- 24:4017 times
- 24:42now that friends and teens have carried
- 24:43out this utterly barbaric in their
- 24:45belief murder
- 24:47they drive away
- 24:49leave her naked
- 24:51as far as seconds then she's absolutely
- 24:53dead after all who could survive that
- 24:55kind of brutality
- 24:57how alison is alive at this point i have
- 25:00no idea
- 25:01you just think about that over 30 times
- 25:03in the abdomen 17 times slashed across
- 25:06her throat she's completely naked
- 25:08completely vulnerable and she's in the
- 25:09middle of nowhere
- 25:11and one of the things that she says she
- 25:12becomes really aware of is her breathing
- 25:14and the reason that she can hear her
- 25:16breathing so loudly is because they've
- 25:18severed her windpipe
- 25:20and she talks about the fact that in
- 25:22that moment she just thought i'm gonna
- 25:24die
- 25:25and she physically felt herself leave
- 25:28her body
- 25:29completely
- 25:30like she feels herself above her body
- 25:32and she can actually see her body all
- 25:35slashed and or broken and she said that
- 25:38all she could hear was silence
- 25:41so there's no connection with a physical
- 25:43form
- 25:44and she knows she's dying
- 25:47but
- 25:47she talks about the fact that even
- 25:49though she feels this distance
- 25:51and even though she knows that she's
- 25:53left her body physically
- 25:55she knows that she still has a choice
- 25:57and that she still can make a choice to
- 26:00return to her body so she chooses to do
- 26:02so and the reason that she gives for
- 26:04that is that she says that she realized
- 26:07i wanted a chance to live my life better
- 26:10i wanted to make my mark
- 26:12and in that moment she came back into my
- 26:14body a lot of people who have near-death
- 26:17experiences talk about that moment that
- 26:19choice
- 26:20knowing that there is an option for them
- 26:22to return that might not be easy but
- 26:25it'll be transformative and the story
- 26:27that i'm telling you today is all about
- 26:29transformation
- 26:32when she gets back into her body she
- 26:33still doesn't know that she's going to
- 26:34live shall we stay but she knows that
- 26:36she's got to do something
- 26:38so she wants to make sure that her
- 26:40perpetrators are court can you believe
- 26:42that she does this
- 26:45so she has had all of those injuries
- 26:49just
- 26:50imagine
- 26:51what a stage she's in
- 26:53and she writes in the sand
- 26:56friends
- 26:57and tiens because she's heard them
- 26:59talking
- 27:00they drop their cover
- 27:02during the drive
- 27:03she knows who they are
- 27:05so as far as she was concerned in that
- 27:07moment even if she was going to die
- 27:09getting back in that body meant that the
- 27:11police would know who had killed her
- 27:13and then heartbreakingly she also wrote
- 27:16i love mum
- 27:17or mom i should say we'd say mum in the
- 27:21uk
- 27:24about this point
- 27:25she talks about
- 27:27the realisation that something wet is
- 27:29around her legs
- 27:31and she puts her hands down and she
- 27:34realizes that it's her intestines
- 27:37and her intestines have basically all
- 27:39come out because they've disemboweled
- 27:40her
- 27:42so
- 27:43in spite of being in this agony in spite
- 27:45of this horror that's going on she
- 27:48reaches over for a denim shirt that she
- 27:49had with her because obviously they've
- 27:51left her clothes
- 27:52even though she was left naked they
- 27:54hadn't taken the clothes with her so she
- 27:56then gathers her intestines in
- 27:59basically covering them
- 28:01now i have no idea how she manages to
- 28:04get to her feet but there is something
- 28:06going on in her that says that she has
- 28:08to try and there is this
- 28:11horrific description really when she
- 28:13talks about the fact that when she
- 28:15starts to get up everything goes black
- 28:17and she doesn't know why and then she
- 28:18realizes and it's because her throat is
- 28:20cut so badly that her head is almost
- 28:22decapitated so she has to push her head
- 28:24back on this is true
- 28:26i'm not making this up
- 28:27doctors will verify it
- 28:29that's how serious that was
- 28:32it was because the muscle in her neck
- 28:34had been caught
- 28:36she had to reposition her head
- 28:39now
- 28:40what is insane
- 28:42about this story and beautiful
- 28:46is that alison was a long way
- 28:48from the main road
- 28:50a long way
- 28:52think about her injuries
- 28:54think about the blood loss
- 28:56she's holding it intestines together
- 28:59with her denim shirt
- 29:01her head is all but decapitated
- 29:04and the road is a long way away
- 29:06and all she felt
- 29:08was something lifting her
- 29:10kid you're not
- 29:13get
- 29:14chills when i think about it i did the
- 29:16first time i watched it you've got to
- 29:17watch it now because you'll be like the
- 29:18same
- 29:20and
- 29:21she just felt self-carried
- 29:23she literally felt herself lifted and
- 29:25carried all the way to the road
- 29:28and then she's laid on the road
- 29:31now there's no way
- 29:33that somebody in her condition could
- 29:35have made it by herself there's no way
- 29:37and then you think about somebody
- 29:39finding her and carrying no way
- 29:41as far as she's concerned that was an
- 29:43angel as far as she's concerned that's
- 29:44what saved her
- 29:46and also
- 29:47then a car appears
- 29:49and she's thinking to herself oh my god
- 29:50it could be her killers
- 29:53but ironically this car drives away that
- 29:55drives me insane when i hear that bit
- 29:57because imagine being somebody finding a
- 29:59woman cuts pieces in the road clearly
- 30:01naked clearly in a horrendous state and
- 30:03you just drive away fortunately within
- 30:05moments another car arrives and that car
- 30:07is being driven by 20 year old
- 30:09veterinary student tian ellard and
- 30:11what's incredible about this experience
- 30:12is it doesn't just change alison's life
- 30:15it changes tien's life too he and his
- 30:17friends in the car are absolutely
- 30:19stunned of course they are they can see
- 30:21instantly this girl has been
- 30:22horrifically horrifically abused and he
- 30:24actually kneels down next to her tells
- 30:26her that she's going to be all right and
- 30:28one of his friends has got a mobile
- 30:29phone which is amazing because it was
- 30:31literally at this point really new
- 30:34technology
- 30:35so
- 30:36the chance
- 30:37that not only would a car pull up but
- 30:40that car
- 30:41in the middle of nowhere has got
- 30:43somebody with a mobile phone that hardly
- 30:45anybody had is unreal a miracle
- 30:49so they call for an ambulance and you
- 30:50know how long that ambulance takes
- 30:5350
- 30:54minutes
- 30:5650 minutes how she didn't die
- 30:58no one knows and if it isn't shocking
- 31:00enough that the ambulance took 50
- 31:01minutes to arrive when you've got
- 31:03someone who's literally clinging on for
- 31:04life elif said that more worryingly they
- 31:08drove really slowly to the hospital and
- 31:10he assumed that the ambulance drivers
- 31:12and paramedics thought there was no way
- 31:14that she was going to live they had
- 31:15never seen injuries
- 31:17on anyone like this who lived and that's
- 31:21per se in the hospital it's known
- 31:23historically as the case where she
- 31:26should not have lived no one had ever
- 31:28come close to being that injured and
- 31:30surviving and what's amazing is that
- 31:34ellard's life changed the moment that he
- 31:37actually met alison because he decided
- 31:40to stop training to be a vet and instead
- 31:43he trained to be a doctor and he grants
- 31:45that experience as the reason for it
- 31:49when she arrives at hospital
- 31:52no one can believe
- 31:53what she's like they can't believe the
- 31:56brutality and extent of her injuries her
- 31:58specialist in intensive care said in his
- 31:59entire career he had never treated
- 32:02anyone who had experienced horror like
- 32:04she had
- 32:05in fact when you watch him talk about he
- 32:07still cries because he's so affected by
- 32:09it
- 32:10the horrific wound to her neck affected
- 32:13a trachea they cut through her windpipe
- 32:16her throat was slipped from ear to ear
- 32:18that in itself
- 32:20is
- 32:21unbelievable to imagine surviving alison
- 32:24was also disembowelled and remember what
- 32:26i said about where she had been raped
- 32:29there was like barbecue debris there was
- 32:32sound there was dirt
- 32:34and that meant that when they were
- 32:35looking at her bowel which was obviously
- 32:37all disemboweled with her intestines
- 32:40they were literally covered in charcoal
- 32:43sand and dirt
- 32:44and
- 32:45the doctors who operated on her to save
- 32:47her life that evening thought that there
- 32:49was absolutely no way that she'd ever be
- 32:50able to have children because she was so
- 32:52badly damaged now the intensive care
- 32:54doctor has a hell of a lot of work to do
- 32:56and there is also another surgeon on
- 32:58call and it's unbelievable
- 33:00because
- 33:01in spite of the fact that alison is
- 33:04clinging on for dear life
- 33:06she needs more than ent which is ear
- 33:09nose and throat because obviously her
- 33:10throat is in just such a state she's
- 33:12obviously got all these other injuries
- 33:14that requires a surgeon who can be an
- 33:16expert there and it turns out the
- 33:18surgeon who is on call because he
- 33:20trained in india he was actually trained
- 33:23in all surgery so his specialism was ent
- 33:27but he was actually qualified as a
- 33:28general surgeon
- 33:30and he knew that he could do it he knew
- 33:32he could help her
- 33:34and
- 33:35the truth is that when you think about
- 33:37what they had to do
- 33:39they had to get every bit of her
- 33:40intestine
- 33:42and they had to do things like scrub it
- 33:44clean
- 33:45literally with a scrubbing brush at
- 33:46times because the infection that you can
- 33:48cause down there
- 33:50when dirt is left remember the bowel is
- 33:52a really mucky area anyway can be
- 33:55catastrophic it can cause blood
- 33:56poisoning is why people die
- 33:58so
- 33:59imagine at this moment in time
- 34:02the series of events that have led you
- 34:04to alison being in the theater
- 34:07with a doctor who's qualified to deal
- 34:09with those horrific injuries
- 34:13it's nothing short of miraculous is it
- 34:16even more so is this
- 34:18in spite of alison being in that state
- 34:20she was able to consent
- 34:22to her surgery she was able to sign her
- 34:25name and she even wrote her mother's
- 34:27phone number down because she wanted him
- 34:28to be called
- 34:30like
- 34:32it's unreal isn't it the icu doctor said
- 34:34without that particular on-call surgeon
- 34:37they wouldn't be able to do it because
- 34:39he absolutely
- 34:41manifested the most unbelievable healing
- 34:44on that evening
- 34:45and both doctors said that in spite of
- 34:48the fact that they are medics in spite
- 34:50of the fact that they are surgeons in
- 34:51spite of the fact that you know they are
- 34:53scientists
- 34:56they cannot
- 34:58question anything other
- 35:00than a miracle occurred they really
- 35:02believe that
- 35:03that there is no other reason for her
- 35:06survival that somehow in spite of all
- 35:08her horrific injuries when they looked
- 35:11at what had occurred bear in mind how
- 35:13many times she was stabbed in the
- 35:14abdomen bear in mind the throat right
- 35:18when they actually explored her injuries
- 35:20none of her lungs hearts were damaged
- 35:23the bowel injury didn't result in any
- 35:24infection and her trachea
- 35:27healed perfectly
- 35:30also
- 35:31the hospital was so caring
- 35:33and that icu doctor he stayed with her
- 35:36all night
- 35:37he just wanted to make sure that she got
- 35:38through
- 35:40now the following morning the police
- 35:41obviously show up at the hospital
- 35:43and
- 35:44they take a book of pictures because
- 35:46they want to try to find out as soon as
- 35:49possible who these horrific attempted
- 35:51murderers and rapists are
- 35:53and she's unreal
- 35:55because not only does she point out
- 35:58both of her rapists she then writes the
- 36:00name down
- 36:02so she's that strong think about this
- 36:04has been 24 hours of this horrific thing
- 36:06happening
- 36:08the doctor is then told look
- 36:10as much as this is really powerful that
- 36:12she's written the names down and she's
- 36:14identified them the chief prosecutor has
- 36:16said that the case would be stronger if
- 36:18she could actually say who her attackers
- 36:20were
- 36:22so then the doctor has to go and say to
- 36:23allison look the chief prosecutor has
- 36:25said that if you can speak their names
- 36:28it will be far more powerful i
- 36:30understand why because obviously anybody
- 36:32can write names down right so that would
- 36:34give a defense an opportunity to say
- 36:35well it wasn't actually our client who
- 36:37did that but as soon as the doctor says
- 36:40it she writes down take it out
- 36:44now the doctor was really worried
- 36:45because they just fixed a trachea and he
- 36:47was deeply worried that it might affect
- 36:49the surgery affect her healing and she
- 36:51didn't care she just wanted those
- 36:53perpetrators taken she wanted them taken
- 36:56down
- 36:57and when he took the tube out she
- 36:59basically said that feels wonderful
- 37:02again just shocks you to imagine that
- 37:04how can somebody have that mindset hours
- 37:07after this horrific crime
- 37:08that having that tube removed is
- 37:10wonderful
- 37:12and then she said the names franz and
- 37:14tiens
- 37:16it was a really short amount of time
- 37:18that she was in icu then she got
- 37:19discharged to awards and basically
- 37:22started her journey to recovery and it's
- 37:24worth letting you know that her injuries
- 37:26were so severe so devastating that a lot
- 37:28of her friends couldn't even face
- 37:29visiting her for a few days
- 37:31because they were so overwhelmed with
- 37:33what had happened and then
- 37:35when they did go and visit her they were
- 37:37absolutely blindsided
- 37:40she had the most incredible resilience
- 37:42though her friends talk about the fact
- 37:43that she was joking
- 37:45and that they shouldn't cry because she
- 37:46hadn't cracked a nail and she hadn't
- 37:50in all of that horror in all of that
- 37:51attack
- 37:52alison's perfect nails had stayed intact
- 37:56but what kind of resilience have you got
- 38:00to crack a joke like that i mean i'm
- 38:01into gallows humor guys you know i am
- 38:03you gotta you gotta learn to laugh
- 38:04haven't you but i don't think i would be
- 38:06able to be quite as resilient in such a
- 38:08situation and everybody who met alison
- 38:11since that day
- 38:13has felt completely stunned by her story
- 38:16and that was the beginning of her
- 38:18journey really she needed plastic
- 38:20surgery she used to constantly have to
- 38:22have her abdomen scraped out for healing
- 38:25and she said that when she looks at what
- 38:28they put her through
- 38:29all her recovery felt was pain that's
- 38:32the only way that she can describe it
- 38:33she still has pain these days but
- 38:35nothing compared to them you know she
- 38:37has manageable pain now because of
- 38:39alison's case two other women's cases
- 38:41are also recognised so two women had
- 38:42reported attacks themselves they'd had
- 38:45their lives threatened
- 38:46by these men but nonetheless they came
- 38:49forward and that gave weight to alison's
- 38:52case so both the men are arrested and
- 38:54both are unbelievably shocked
- 38:57because of course
- 38:59they think they've murdered alison
- 39:02they're not expecting her to be the star
- 39:04witness and in fact detective humpel who
- 39:07was one of the prosecuting officers said
- 39:09that when he told franz that he had him
- 39:12and that alison was alive he just kind
- 39:14of went well there's nothing i can do
- 39:15you've got me bang to write so to speak
- 39:18it must have been so deeply satisfying
- 39:20and in that moment franz actually took
- 39:22off a ring
- 39:24that belonged to alison
- 39:26that was covered in allison's blood
- 39:28the arrogance of it
- 39:30unbelievable but i imagine that deep
- 39:33satisfaction of the detective where he's
- 39:36just like i have you and there is
- 39:38nothing that you can do about it i also
- 39:40have to say about that detective who
- 39:41suddenly died in 2020 he had a heart
- 39:44attack in 2020
- 39:45but it was a career defining moment for
- 39:47him it really was and he knew that he
- 39:50wanted those men put away for life and
- 39:53everybody who worked the case said that
- 39:56that officer prepared for that trial
- 39:59like they had never seen anyone prepare
- 40:02they wanted to make sure that neither of
- 40:04those men saw the light of day again
- 40:06because the prosecution wanted to have a
- 40:08really strong case it meant that alison
- 40:09had to have lots of tests she had loads
- 40:11of indignified pictures taken she had
- 40:14pubic hair removed all of this while she
- 40:16still had open wounds just imagine
- 40:18having those tests and having to have
- 40:20the psychological steel to manage it
- 40:22the investigators who were trying the
- 40:24case took it so personally
- 40:27so personally they absolutely wanted to
- 40:29nail it in fact alison's case was the
- 40:31first case in south africa ever to use a
- 40:33two-way mirror so that's where the
- 40:35perpetrators are on one side and you can
- 40:36see them perfectly but they can't see
- 40:38you and alison this is like literally
- 40:42days really after she's got out of
- 40:44hospital
- 40:45she actually goes and picks them out
- 40:48so she's in this tiny little room and
- 40:50she said that that's one of the times
- 40:52that she felt total panic because
- 40:54suddenly she's face to face with her
- 40:56attackers by the way that is now the way
- 40:59that they've always carried on picking
- 41:01out those particular perpetrators using
- 41:03those two-way mirrors but consequently
- 41:06she had to deal with the reality of
- 41:08suddenly seeing the people who tried to
- 41:10murder her and even though it took her a
- 41:12few moments she just said six and
- 41:14thirteen even though they look different
- 41:16she said even though they look different
- 41:18six and thirteen and she got him
- 41:21absolutely got them when the prosecutor
- 41:24who was trying the case looked at the
- 41:27information around alison's experience
- 41:29she said it was completely distressing
- 41:31because she had never dealt with
- 41:32somebody who lived she said usually
- 41:35people who've gone through these kind of
- 41:36situations they deceased
- 41:38and suddenly there is this living
- 41:39speaking woman who is actually taking
- 41:42her perpetrators to court
- 41:44whilst franz was awaiting trial he
- 41:46actually asked whether he could see a
- 41:48pastor because he said that he was full
- 41:50of demons and he wanted them exorcised
- 41:53so to speak now the pastor who went and
- 41:55saw him said that he was apparently
- 41:57possessed by incubus and sanchibus but
- 42:00apparently successfully exercised him
- 42:05i would like video footage of that
- 42:07because all i'm going to say is the
- 42:08exercises that i have seen on horror
- 42:10movies are very clearly demonic
- 42:12profession and if i saw that i would be
- 42:14convinced but unless his head is
- 42:15spinning and there is green stuff being
- 42:17projectile vomited and he's speaking in
- 42:19latin then i'm not having it i think
- 42:22probably he was hoping it would help in
- 42:24his case
- 42:26also the investigating officer detective
- 42:28humper actually refused to handcuff
- 42:31either of them when they came up for
- 42:32trial because he basically said i'm not
- 42:35going to hank with you
- 42:36because you can then run and if you run
- 42:38i can shoot you literally that's what he
- 42:40wanted he felt so angry so incensed that
- 42:43these men had carried out such a
- 42:45horrific attack that he just wanted to
- 42:47give them the option to let loose so he
- 42:50could kill him
- 42:52when the sentencing occurred the judge
- 42:54felt so strongly that he actually wrote
- 42:56down how he felt that they should never
- 42:58ever be allowed out it's quite unusual
- 43:00apparently he's never done it before in
- 43:02his career but he wanted to make it so
- 43:05clear and so documented that if somebody
- 43:07did let them out of prison and they did
- 43:09go on to reoffend that he had done
- 43:11everything in his power to prevent that
- 43:14i think that's really brave also the
- 43:17death penalty had stopped being used in
- 43:19south africa at this point but he said
- 43:21even though that would have been a huge
- 43:23decision for him to take if it had still
- 43:25been constitutional he would have put
- 43:27them to death that's how he felt about
- 43:30these two men
- 43:32alison talks about the fact that she
- 43:34didn't actually find the court case
- 43:35traumatic she felt more like she was
- 43:37just observing it
- 43:39she found it difficult in the media of
- 43:41course seeing her story played out in
- 43:43the media was very challenging on the
- 43:45trial both tiens and franz pleaded
- 43:47guilty to eight charges that included
- 43:49kidnapping rape and attempted murder and
- 43:51they were both found guilty and
- 43:53sentenced to life in prison on the 7th
- 43:55of august 1995. france was actually
- 43:57given three life terms with no parole
- 44:00chinese was given a full life term plus
- 44:0325 years with no parole
- 44:06and
- 44:06even though you'd go oh great they'll
- 44:08never walk the streets it doesn't always
- 44:10work that way because they do get
- 44:11opportunities still for parole so alison
- 44:14does have to live with fear that these
- 44:16guys could get out after attackers have
- 44:19been sent to prison that's really where
- 44:20alison's journey truly begins you know
- 44:23her healing she has to move home with a
- 44:25mother this is a woman who had traveled
- 44:27the world who'd been fully independent
- 44:29and she's suddenly living with a mother
- 44:30albeit that her mom's amazing and
- 44:32deserves a medal of course she does
- 44:34because she's an awesome mum but
- 44:36she has to relearn everything she even
- 44:39talks about what it was like having her
- 44:41first bath and like seeing herself for
- 44:43the first time in the mirror
- 44:45and seeing the injuries
- 44:47and she talks about the fact that that
- 44:48really signified and symbolized a really
- 44:50deep depression
- 44:52she stopped going to work she avoided
- 44:54phone calls she said that she started to
- 44:55overeat it was all that kind of
- 44:57self-loathing
- 44:58and she said that everything in her life
- 45:00that was bad she'd just say it's my
- 45:02attacker's fault but then she realized
- 45:04the more that i do that the more power
- 45:06i'm giving them
- 45:08like she took herself back to that
- 45:10moment
- 45:11where she felt herself raised from her
- 45:13body
- 45:14where she felt herself looking down
- 45:16saying
- 45:17i want to do better i want a better life
- 45:19and she realized that that's what she
- 45:21needed to do
- 45:22she needed to make a choice
- 45:24and at that moment in time when she's
- 45:26going through this deep depression and
- 45:28she's having this kind of epiphany she
- 45:30suddenly gets this opportunity to go and
- 45:32speak at the rotary club
- 45:35to talk about
- 45:36her life-changing experience
- 45:39and she said she was never more
- 45:41terrified than the idea of public
- 45:43speaking but she thought i've survived
- 45:44this why not
- 45:47and that event
- 45:49changed everything
- 45:52alison bertha has become an
- 45:54international survivor
- 45:57she's traveled all over the world giving
- 46:00speeches helping others heal
- 46:02she has the abc she calls it
- 46:06attitude belief and choice
- 46:09basically what she's saying is you can't
- 46:10control what happens in your life
- 46:12but you can control what you choose to
- 46:14do with it
- 46:15and that in itself demonstrates doesn't
- 46:18it
- 46:19the willingness to reframe the worst
- 46:21things that can happen to you in your
- 46:23life and make it into something
- 46:24productive and positive and hopeful i
- 46:26mean she would not have chosen to go
- 46:28through that attack of course she
- 46:29wouldn't have it was horrific but what
- 46:31she took from it what she did with it it
- 46:33didn't just change her life it changed
- 46:35so many other people's lives to the belt
- 46:37like she has influenced so many if you
- 46:39see her speak she is inspiring
- 46:41she also says that there's only been one
- 46:43other time where she fell into a
- 46:44depression and that's when she found out
- 46:46that her attackers might get parole
- 46:48don't worry
- 46:49i checked
- 46:50they didn't they didn't get parole
- 46:53but she said when they actually were
- 46:55looking at applying for it or she felt
- 46:57with these memories returning that she
- 47:00would have to go through reliving it
- 47:01because that's what you have to do don't
- 47:02you when somebody's going to get parole
- 47:04you have to give victim statements and
- 47:06impact statements and you have to relive
- 47:08it
- 47:08and bizarrely
- 47:10because obviously we know the internet
- 47:12exists hence why i'm doing this but
- 47:14bizarrely
- 47:15franz's fiance
- 47:18her mother so france has a fiancee by
- 47:20the way at this point yes you heard me
- 47:21right france multiple rapist
- 47:25slasher
- 47:27psychopath yeah he's managed to bag
- 47:29himself a fiance
- 47:31that's so enamored with friends because
- 47:32you would i mean if i was looking for a
- 47:34son-in-law i definitely want a raper
- 47:36ripper for a son-in-law but so enamored
- 47:39is the family that this mother
- 47:42writes to alison and is like oh please
- 47:44help release him
- 47:46i kid you not that actually happened
- 47:48please help her please release him
- 47:50alison
- 47:51don't be a [ __ ]
- 47:52release the person who would have
- 47:53murdered you
- 47:56that actually legitimately happened and
- 48:00so alison understandably then lets the
- 48:02authorities know what the hell is
- 48:03happening no one should have any contact
- 48:05with me and this should not be happening
- 48:07how is this woman aware of who i am
- 48:09where i am etc how are they having
- 48:11contact in prison and so on and so forth
- 48:14and she actually wrote to the
- 48:15authorities and said whatever you do
- 48:16keep this communication between me and
- 48:19you confidential so that's exactly what
- 48:21they did no they didn't they gave him a
- 48:23copy
- 48:26they gave friends a copy
- 48:30of alison's
- 48:31response
- 48:34and you know what he did he was like
- 48:36oh i should feel really ashamed of that
- 48:38shouldn't i no that's not what he did he
- 48:39said actually what i want is a profit
- 48:42share
- 48:43of all of your speaking engagements
- 48:45because at the end of the day if i
- 48:47hadn't done what i did to you you
- 48:49wouldn't have created this life view
- 48:52i think when we go through the
- 48:53psychopathy checklist we can just add
- 48:55narcissism to it can't we there we go
- 48:58complete narcissism i nearly murdered
- 49:00you but because you've made a life for
- 49:02yourself having healed and been hugely
- 49:04resilient the opposite of what i am i
- 49:06now require you to share your profits
- 49:08with me
- 49:09you will be surprised to realize that
- 49:10that didn't happen apparently that
- 49:13wasn't legally
- 49:14sound the final thing that i want to
- 49:16talk about before i finish this what i
- 49:19hope to have been an inspiring hopeful
- 49:21story for a change is that alison in
- 49:23spite of those horrific injuries to her
- 49:25womb in spite of them at trying to steal
- 49:27her opportunity to have children they
- 49:29failed because alison managed to have
- 49:32two children
- 49:33and guess what
- 49:35the next bit that i tell you if you
- 49:37don't cry you will realize that you have
- 49:40no soul by the way so i'm just gonna let
- 49:42you know that her second child's birth
- 49:45was assisted by the man who saved her
- 49:46life that 20 year old vet student whose
- 49:50life changed as equally as hers the
- 49:53night that he found her on that road
- 49:56makes me want to cry every time
- 49:58i think about that makes me want to cry
- 50:00but can you imagine the fact that he was
- 50:02there for a second child's birth
- 50:04so in 2015 by the way they did become
- 50:06eligible for parole as i said but they
- 50:09had it refused
- 50:10as a side note i also think it's
- 50:11important to recognize that franz's
- 50:13father killed himself two years after
- 50:15they were sentenced so clearly his
- 50:17father had a huge conscience about what
- 50:19his son did and it also is a stark
- 50:22reminder that perpetrators belong to
- 50:24families and sometimes those families
- 50:27are complete innocent bystanders in the
- 50:30car crash of the child's life that
- 50:32unfolds and in this case it seems very
- 50:34fitting where franz is concerned
- 50:37i hope you've got something positive out
- 50:39of today's story like i said i'm going
- 50:41to put the link in for the documentary
- 50:44because it is really inspiring it's
- 50:47beautiful to watch you will cry several
- 50:49times like i did even talking about it
- 50:51makes me want to cry i hope there's
- 50:53something that you can take from today's
- 50:54story it's that even in the bleakest of
- 50:57moments there is always light that even
- 51:00when the most tragic of experiences
- 51:03unfold and we feel like a complete
- 51:05victim
- 51:06there is still an opportunity to decide
- 51:08that instead we are a survivor and
- 51:10that isn't an easy journey christ i
- 51:13completely know it isn't i think that
- 51:15i'm definitely on a journey to trying to
- 51:18be some kind of survivor and it's
- 51:20definitely not linear and it's certainly
- 51:21not simple but when you listen to
- 51:23stories like alison's it's just a nice
- 51:26gentle reminder that even when you think
- 51:28you want to give up there really is
- 51:30reason to keep going and it's a thank
- 51:33you and a dedication to an incredible
- 51:35woman who is mind-blowingly powerful
- 51:38incredibly strong unbelievably humble
- 51:40and i think for every single one of us
- 51:42watching this tonight we will all agree
- 51:44that her story is one that we'll take
- 51:46with us for the rest of our lives
- 51:48certainly i will thank you for watching
- 51:50i think it's been quite a long one and
- 51:53like i said please watch the documentary
- 51:55it's absolutely
- 51:56beautiful and if you've enjoyed
- 51:58listening please give me a comment give
- 52:00me a like even better give me a
- 52:02subscribe and i'll see you again very
- 52:04very soon i did this without crying a
- 52:07lot there is a few tears but i had to
- 52:09stop and start again
- 52:11hence why my makeup doesn't look as good
- 52:13sorry
- 52:15[Music]
- 52:55you
