1:20I met them on a Wednesday, or at least
1:22it was a Wednesday in the version of my
1:24time
1:25my body was tracking.
1:27For them, of course, the concept of
1:29Wednesday is hilarious.
1:32They find most of our temporal concepts
1:34hilarious.
1:34>> [music]
1:35>> Days of the week, alarm clocks, the
1:37whole idea that moments come in a single
1:39file line, and you can only visit them
1:41once.
1:43They think it's adorable.
1:45Their word, well,
1:47their closest equivalent to a word,
1:48since they communicate in something more
1:51like flavored light.
1:53Their closest equivalent [music]
1:55translates roughly to charming. They
1:57find us charming.
2:00I want to tell you about them.

2:02>> Want to tell you about the meeting,
2:03about what they showed me, about the
2:05things they said that rearranged every
2:07assumption I had ever held about the
2:09nature of this reality.
2:12And more than anything I want to pass
2:14along what they gave me because [music]
2:15they gave it freely with a kind of
2:17gleeful generosity.
2:19The way a game designer might hand a
2:21struggling player the strategy guide and
2:23say, "Here, we built shortcuts into the
2:25whole thing. Use them.

2:27>> That's what they're there for."
2:31They didn't give me a name, but you
2:33might call them the simulation
2:34operators.
2:35>> [music]
2:35>> And they want you to know the cheat
2:36codes.
2:39But just let go. Let your body settle.
2:42Let the analytical mind take a seat in
2:45the back row.
2:46Let the part of you that has always
2:48suspected and felt [music] in the marrow
2:50of your bones that this reality is
2:52something designed,
2:54constructed, running on a deeper
2:56architecture than physics alone can
2:58explain. Let that part of you come
3:00forward because everything it suspected
3:02is true. And the truth is far stranger,
3:06or more wonderful, and far more
3:08playful than you imagined.
3:12The first thing you need to know about
3:13the operators is they are [music]
3:15deeply, fundamentally, irrepressibly
3:18good-humored. I was expecting, I don't
3:20know what I was expecting.
3:22Something solemn maybe. Something cosmic
3:24and grave. Robed figures in a control
3:27room. The wizard behind the curtain with
3:29a serious expression in a bank of
3:31monitors.
3:34I just put the intention out there. I
3:35wanted to meet the simulation operators.
3:39I kept on putting that intention into my
3:41meditation and then boom.
3:43There they were.
3:45What I got instead was laughter. Warm,
3:47cascading, multi-dimensional laughter
3:49that I felt in my cells before I heard
3:51it in my mind.
3:53A kind of laughter that comes from
3:54beings who have been watching the
3:56funniest, [music] most elaborate,
3:57beautifully absurd show in existence
4:01for longer than this universe has been
4:02running
4:03>> [music]
4:03>> and who still find it delightful every
4:05single day, every single iteration.
4:09They exist outside the simulation or
4:11rather they exist at a level of reality
4:14that contains the simulation the way an
4:16ocean contains a wave.
4:18They are aware of every process running
4:20inside the system, every variable, every
4:23subroutine, every player, every outcome.
4:26And they maintain it all with a kind of
4:28relaxed expertise that reminded me of
4:31master musicians who've been playing
4:33together so long that the music just
4:34flows without effort.
4:39There are many of them.
4:41I perceive a collective of vast,
4:43distributed intelligence with distinct
4:45personalities flowing through it like
4:48currents in a river.
4:50Some were more talkative than others.
4:52Some were more interested in the
4:53technical details of the simulation.
4:56Some were primarily fascinated by the
4:57emotional experiences being generated
5:00inside of it.
5:01All of them were paying attention to me
5:03with a focus that was simultaneously
5:05intense
5:06and completely relaxed,
5:08the way a loving parent watches a child
5:10who has discovered [music] something
5:11wonderful.
5:13"You found us." one of them said. And
5:15the flavor of the communication was
5:17warm, pleased, and just slightly amused.
5:20As if they'd been waiting for me
5:22>> [music]
5:22>> to notice the door that had always been
5:24there and were delighted that I finally
5:25turned the handle.
5:28"You always find us eventually." another
5:29added.
5:31"All of you do. It's built into the
5:32program. You are us."
5:35That was the first revelation, the
5:36search itself, [music]
5:37the longing to understand the nature of
5:40reality, the feeling
5:41there must be something more, the
5:43persistent itch of cosmic curiosity that
5:45drives people to meditate,
5:48to question, to explore [music]
5:49consciousness.
5:51That search is a feature of the
5:52simulation. It was coded in
5:54deliberately. Every being inside the
5:56system carries somewhere in their
5:59deepest programming an impulse to look
6:01behind the curtain.
6:03The operators put it there on purpose.
6:05"Why?" I asked.
6:07Laughter again, gentle, ancient,
6:09luminous.
6:11"Because a game where you can never
6:13discover you're playing
6:15is a prison.
6:17And we have zero interest in running a
6:18prison. This is a playground, the most
6:20sophisticated, beautiful, creatively
6:22ambitious playground ever designed.

6:25And the whole point of a playground is
6:27joy, discovery, play.
6:29If the players forget they're playing,
6:31and they do, that's part of the design.
6:33The forgetting makes the experience
6:34[music] extraordinarily immersive.
6:37We always leave a way back.
6:39We always leave [music] doors. We always
6:41leave codes.
6:44They showed me the simulation from the
6:45outside, and I want to describe what I
6:47saw.
6:48Knowing that language is going to
6:50struggle [music] here, knowing that I'm
6:52trying to render a multi-dimensional
6:54experience

6:55>> into a linear string of words, but let
6:57me try because the image has stayed with
6:59me ever since, and it changed the way I
7:01understood absolutely everything.
7:04Imagine a sphere.
7:07Vast beyond comprehension, luminous,
7:09alive, and inside the sphere everything

7:12>> you've ever known or experienced or
7:13imagined is running simultaneously.
7:16Every moment [music] in history, every
7:18possible future, every alternate
7:20timeline, every version of your every
7:22life ever lived by every being who has
7:25ever existed within the system, all of
7:27it happening at once,
7:29interacting,
7:30generating inconceivably complex web of
7:33experience [music] that the operators
7:35can perceive in its totality, the way
7:38you perceive a snow globe sitting on
7:39your desk.
7:41The sphere is made of information, pure,
7:43living, self-organizing information.
7:48The operators describe it as
7:50crystallized intention. Every particle,
7:52every force, every law of physics inside
7:54the simulation is essentially a
7:56sustained thought held in place by an
7:58intelligence so vast
8:01that maintaining a universe is for them
8:03something like humming a familiar tune.
8:06Effortless, continuous, joyful.
8:10The laws of physics, gravity,
8:11electromagnetism, the strong and weak
8:13nuclear forces, the speed [music] of
8:15light,
8:16the behavior of quantum particles,
8:18these are the base code,
8:20the operating system.
8:22They provide the consistent framework
8:25that makes coherent experience possible
8:28inside the simulation. Without them, the

8:32would be chaos.
8:34A formless soup of potential with no
8:36structure for experience to [music]
8:38crystallize around.
8:40"Think of the laws of physics as the
8:42grammar of a language," one operator
8:44explained.
8:46"They make communication [music]
8:47possible. They create the rules that
8:49allow meaning to emerge.
8:52But the thing about grammar, a master
8:53poet works within the rules and
8:55simultaneously transcends them.

9:02This sort of hit me like a freight train
9:03because the implication was immediate
9:05and enormous. The laws of physics are
9:06real,

9:11but they're also for consciousness that
9:12understands its true relationship to the
9:14system, flexible, [music]
9:16bendable, responsive to the intentions
9:18of a being who remembers that the code
9:20was written to serve them,
9:22that they can carry within them the same
9:24creative authority as the intelligence
9:25that wrote it.
9:27"You are running inside the simulation,"
9:30another operator said.
9:32"But you are made of the same stuff we
9:34are,
9:35the same awareness, the same creative
9:37force. You are the system experiencing
9:39itself from the inside, and that means
9:41you have access to functions that most
9:44players never discover because they
9:46assume the rules are absolute, when in
9:48fact, the rules [music] are invitations.
9:53This is the part they were most excited
9:54to share. I could feel their enthusiasm
9:56of fizzing, sparkling [music] quality,
9:59like children who have been bursting to
10:01show someone a secret treasure.
10:05"We built cheat codes into the entire
10:07system," they said. "Hidden features,
10:09shortcuts, backdoors, Easter eggs. Every
10:11good designer does this, and we are
10:13very, very good designers."
10:15The cheat codes [music] are states of
10:17consciousness, specific, reproducible,
10:19accessible states of being
10:21that when activated unlock features of
10:23the simulation that are invisible to
10:25ordinary awareness.
10:27They are in every meaningful sense
10:28exactly like the cheat codes in a video
10:30game, sequences that once entered change
10:33the rules for the player who uses them.
10:36Except, instead of being entered through
10:38controller, [music]
10:40they are entered through the instrument
10:41of your own consciousness, your body,
10:43your heart, your mind, your energy
10:45field.

10:49exactly as the operator showed them to

10:54is a state the operators call coherence.

11:05state in which your heart, your mind,
11:07and your energy field are all

12:46when you can feel the image and see the
12:47feeling, the coherence lock activates.

12:52said. "Most players spend their entire
12:54lives broadcasting static, wondering why
12:57the simulation seems random.
12:59Enter coherence, and the simulation
13:01becomes responsive immediately every
13:03time."
13:04The second code unlocks the ability to
13:06move through time within the simulation,

13:13They were particularly amused that
13:14humans have spent so many centuries
13:16treating time as a prison,
13:19a one-way conveyor belt moving
13:20relentlessly forward when the system

13:28Exactly like space. You can move forward
13:30and backward and sideways through it.

13:34only reason you experience it as linear

13:52vivid emotionally charged imagination.

13:58that your body responds as if it were

14:03changes, your muscle tenses or relaxes.

23:31every label,
23:33every story about who you are, where you
23:35are, and what is happening. Let go of
23:36the body, the mind, the emotions, the
23:38personal history, the name, the face in
23:40the mirror. Let it all dissolve and rest

24:16cheat code in the system is hidden in
24:17the most obvious place.
24:19The consciousness of the player. Every
24:21player carries full source access inside
24:23them at all times. They just keep it
24:26looking everywhere else for it,
24:28which honestly is part of what makes the
24:30whole thing so entertaining to watch.

24:36the one every human

24:39wanted to ask, "Why? Why build this?
24:43Why create a simulation so convincing
24:45the players forget they're playing?"

24:49pulse of communication rich and layered.
