- 0:00You turned a $90 investment into $50,000
- 0:03in a year on the side. Yeah. Yep.
- 0:06>> Jeez. You could start this for free if
- 0:07you really wanted to. I probably close
- 0:1095% of my deals over Messenger or text.
- 0:14Wow, without having to hop on the call.
- 0:16>> Nope. I didn't have an LLC for the first
- 0:19two cars that I sent out. That's fine. I
- 0:21always just would get caught up, you
- 0:23know, worrying about making sure the
- 0:24website looks good and the the logo and
- 0:27all this. I was like, "No, this time I'm
- 0:28not doing it. I'm just going to make
- 0:29sure I can actually make money before I
- 0:32Yeah. I go and spend money on doing all
- 0:33this stuff. And so it's like I started
- 0:35this business for less than 100 bucks.
- 0:38This has kind of snowballed into
- 0:40something that wasn't really expecting a
- 0:42year ago. I just wanted some extra money
- 0:44and now it's turning to this full-time
- 0:45thing. We built a multi-million dollar
- 0:47business with five or six pieces of
- 0:49direct mail to a a few thousand
- 0:51hair shops. And it works.
- 0:54All that to say like you should dog food
- 0:56it, right? You should eat your own dog
- 0:58food and use your product to find more
- 1:01services for your product.
- 1:06So I just came across a 25-year-old on
- 1:08Instagram doing something wild. He
- 1:11turned 90 bucks into 50 grand in 1 year
- 1:14from his phone. He's never cold called,
- 1:17he's never ran an ad, he's never even
- 1:18hopped on a Zoom. He closes 95% of his
- 1:21deals in Facebook Messenger of all
- 1:23places. And one plumber even paid him
- 1:26$1,100 after five texts. No skills, no
- 1:30experience, no employees. He pockets
- 1:32about half of everything he collects as
- 1:35profit. And at the end of this, he's
- 1:36going to show me how to acquire as many
- 1:38customers as you'd ever want and even
- 1:40more interestingly, he's going to show
- 1:41me this weird Facebook trick that he
- 1:43uses to make plumbers and other local
- 1:45business owners DM him first. This isn't
- 1:48an AI business or a sweaty startup. But
- 1:51whether you want to do this on the side
- 1:52or full-time, you're going to love it.
- 1:54Please enjoy. So what I do is I sell
- 1:57advertising space to local businesses in
- 2:00my area on share postcards like this.
- 2:02So, here's one that I did and So,
- 2:06you know, filled front and back. You
- 2:08know, here's another one that I did. And
- 2:10so, I filled the ad space with local
- 2:12businesses. I only allow one business
- 2:14per category on the card. So, I'm not
- 2:17going to put two landscapers against
- 2:19each other. So, and they get full
- 2:21exposure for whatever services that they
- 2:23want to offer. And then, I will send it
- 2:25out to the local area. So, this this
- 2:28card right here went out to 10,000
- 2:30homeowners in, you know,
- 2:32the city right next to me. So, I got
- 2:34businesses that service that area or
- 2:36were in that area. And then, the way
- 2:38that I send it out is by using the USPS
- 2:40Every Door Direct Mail tool. So, I don't
- 2:42need a a mailing list or names to send
- 2:45these cards out. And I'm I'm just
- 2:47thinking, I'm trying to compare it to
- 2:49like something different like a
- 2:50newsletter. And a newsletter is like a
- 2:52two-sided marketplace. You need the
- 2:54supply of the email addresses, which you
- 2:56got to go out and find, paid ads,
- 2:58organic, you know, one by one by one.
- 3:01And then, you need the demand from the
- 3:02advertisers, which is usually in the
- 3:04newsletter business the harder part.
- 3:05Yeah.
- 3:06>> But, you're over here saying like, I've
- 3:07got a marketplace, but I only need to
- 3:08fill half of it because I can legally,
- 3:11thanks to the US Post Service EDDM,
- 3:13Every Door Direct
- 3:14>> Yeah. I can mail anyone in the world
- 3:16that I want to mail for 40 cents or
- 3:18whatever, right? Yeah. I just need to
- 3:20find the advertisers for the postcards.
- 3:22Is that accurate?
- 3:23>> Yeah, so I pick the area. I'll go on to
- 3:26the USPS Every Door Direct Mail tool,
- 3:28and I'll type in the zip code that I
- 3:29want to target. And usually, I'll I'll
- 3:32sort by higher income just cuz they're
- 3:34mostly single-family homes cuz you don't
- 3:35want to You don't want to get a bunch of
- 3:37home service businesses like a
- 3:38landscaper, a roofer, and then send your
- 3:40card out to condos and apartments.
- 3:43You're just going to be wasting those
- 3:44people's money. And so, pick the area,
- 3:46and then I match the advertisers to that
- 3:49area. And so, I'll sort by income, and
- 3:52then I have a break-even point, right?
- 3:55So it's like I got to fill the front
- 3:57half of my card to cover printing and
- 3:59postage. It's 25 cents per home to send
- 4:03out a card. That's to like buy the the
- 4:05data or for the stamp to that home? So
- 4:08this right here
- 4:10is the indicia. Every card looks exactly
- 4:13the same. Yep. And so you the cards will
- 4:15come printed with the indicia and so
- 4:17it's 25 cents per mail piece. And so if
- 4:20you buy you know if you buy 10,000 mail
- 4:21pieces it's $2,500 in postage and then
- 4:25printing 10,000 of these cards right
- 4:27here which this is like a a 14 point so
- 4:29it's like a thicker like cardstock type
- 4:32paper is a little bit nicer quality
- 4:34stands out in the mail and that's going
- 4:35to run you about $2,300 for 10,000 of
- 4:39those cards shipped
- 4:40>> Okay. printed to your house. So your
- 4:43cost is like about 4,800 bucks and to
- 4:46fill the front of the cards cuz I'll
- 4:47sell this is a 3 by 4 inch space here.
- 4:50And then a double space I sold $600 $600
- 4:53$600 and then $9.99. Um and then I have
- 4:56some half ones on here that I sold for
- 4:57$3.50. And so basically you need to fill
- 4:59the front of your card to break even.
- 5:01Yeah, to break even and everything after
- 5:03that is profit. So I'll just post on
- 5:06Facebook in Facebook groups, you know,
- 5:08your local business networking groups or
- 5:10contracting groups Mhm. and I'll just
- 5:13say like hey, you know, I'm putting
- 5:14together a share postcard is going out
- 5:16to thousands of homes in you know,
- 5:19whatever area I'm sending it to I only
- 5:20feature one business per category so
- 5:23it's first come first serve and then the
- 5:25business owners will
- 5:27comment below and and then we'll take it
- 5:29to the DMs and and then they'll purchase
- 5:32or they'll ask questions and so we'll go
- 5:33from there. So that's one of my favorite
- 5:36prospecting methods is just posting
- 5:37groups. Okay, let me let me summarize
- 5:39cuz I'm like I'm about to get manic here
- 5:41in a minute. I'm about to get manic. So
- 5:43you don't need to like you know, lick a
- 5:46bunch of envelopes and ship them out and
- 5:47have these days where you do You don't
- 5:49do any of that. You find a printing
- 5:51company and there's tons of them. Yeah.
- 5:54And then you find the US Postal Service
- 5:55and you say, "After you get your
- 5:58advertisers, your sponsors,
- 6:00you throw them all together, right? You
- 6:02design them, you put them in Canva or
- 6:03whatever, you drag them around to make
- 6:05them all fit. You send them to the
- 6:06printing company, you say, "I need
- 6:0810,000 of these." And then here's the
- 6:10address. And you probably give them like
- 6:11the US Postal Service address, I
- 6:13imagine. Yeah. Are you getting like a
- 6:15sample from them first just to make sure
- 6:17it doesn't look bad? I have a printer
- 6:19that I've been printing through. He does
- 6:21a great job. So, I already know that
- 6:23that printing He does a great job
- 6:25printing, but if you know, but there's
- 6:27plenty of other places, but I do
- 6:28recommend people go and try to get a
- 6:30sample from them first because right,
- 6:32you don't want to have 10,000 cards show
- 6:34up to your house or 5,000 cards
- 6:35>> Mhm. and they look like garbage. Yeah.
- 6:38And so, you know, 14-point UV gloss card
- 6:41with color on both sides is typically,
- 6:43you know, a a good quality card with
- 6:45plenty of color on there. And so, I
- 6:48would just make sure that you know the
- 6:50kind of paper quality that you want, but
- 6:52that is just a good It's like standard
- 6:55quality right there. So, these printing
- 6:56companies, you can either get them
- 6:57printed and sent to your house. So, I
- 7:00had these this run of 10,000 cards sent
- 7:02to my house. Uh this run of 10,000 cards
- 7:05sent to my house. And they will come
- 7:07pre-bundled. Well, you need to get them
- 7:09pre-bundled into 100s for the USPS to
- 7:12actually accept them. So, you can get a
- 7:14sample or you can just uh
- 7:16you can have them shipped directly to
- 7:17you cuz from what I understand, USPS has
- 7:20like um they have like different
- 7:21distribution hubs. You've got like a
- 7:23post office, but then you have like a
- 7:24distribution hub. Yeah. DFW might have
- 7:27one or two, Salt Lake might have one,
- 7:28etc. So, you can take it yourself, but
- 7:30you have to label it correctly. I used
- 7:32to have a direct mail business. So, like
- 7:34>> and it was a pain. It was
- 7:36it was like a pain to get it all set up,
- 7:37but once you get it set up, it's gravy.
- 7:39Anyway, so, once you're set up and
- 7:41you're confident with the quality you're
- 7:42getting from a vendor, theoretically,
- 7:44you could just say you could they can
- 7:45send you the PDF. You're like, "Yep,
- 7:47looks good. Ship it to the post office."
- 7:49They ship it to the post office, it goes
- 7:51out, and then you're done. And the unit
- 7:53economics are you spend about $5,000
- 7:57and some time in aggregating these
- 7:59sponsors, mostly from Facebook groups.
- 8:01And then if you fill it out front and
- 8:03back, then you make about 9,000 to
- 8:06$10,000 revenue. So, for every $10,000
- 8:10mailing, you're hoping to profit between
- 8:124 and $5,000. Is that accurate?
- 8:15>> Yes, that's correct. And you don't
- 8:17really have any costs. You don't really
- 8:18need employees, at least until you're at
- 8:20scale, because you're not doing the
- 8:22printing, you're not doing the shipping,
- 8:24you're just connecting pieces, sending
- 8:26emails, sending Stripe links, pay your
- 8:27invoice, 400 bucks for this landscaping
- 8:29service, 350 for the orthodontist,
- 8:32onward and so forth, right? Yep, that's
- 8:34correct. How recurring is your business?
- 8:37How often do people want to do another
- 8:39and another and another mailing? So,
- 8:40yeah, that's a great question. So,
- 8:42typically, there are two different card
- 8:45types, I guess, in this industry that
- 8:46you can put together. So, this is
- 8:48something called a 9 by 12 card. It's 9
- 8:50by 12 inches. It typically goes out to
- 8:525, 10,000 or 5 or 10,000 local
- 8:55homeowners. The ads are going to be, you
- 8:57know, a little bit more premium and more
- 8:59customized. Whereas, something like this
- 9:01is a 6 by 11-in card. Uh we call this a
- 9:03community card. And it will go out to
- 9:052,500 homeowners. And this It's a better
- 9:08card for, you know, a local bakery, a
- 9:11restaurant, these these lower ticket
- 9:13businesses that just want to offer a
- 9:15coupon to their local community cuz
- 9:17they're like a brick-and-mortar store.
- 9:18So, I ran this one for 3 months. So, I
- 9:22had them sign up for a 3-month run.
- 9:24Whereas, these ones, they they just ran
- 9:27one time. But I do have some repeats
- 9:29that carry over into the next cards. So,
- 9:32I will always reach out to the the
- 9:35previous advertisers. I'll say like,
- 9:37"Hey, you know, I'm putting together
- 9:38another card. It's going out to, you
- 9:40know, 5,000 homes and, you know, a city
- 9:43that's right next to the one I just sent
- 9:44my card out. Mhm. You know, would you
- 9:46like to take a
- 9:48landscaping spot before I reach out to
- 9:50other landscapers?" And really depends
- 9:52on how you set up. You can set it up to
- 9:53run monthly or you can set up to run
- 9:55once and just get these businesses the
- 9:57exposure to direct mail marketing and to
- 10:00a local community. So, you said the
- 10:01small ones are 6 by 11? Yeah, 6 by 11
- 10:04in. Hey, YouTube's fine, but what about
- 10:06when you're driving around? What about
- 10:07when you're mowing the lawn? You need my
- 10:09audio podcast, The Kerner Office. Just
- 10:11look up TKO pod in Apple, Spotify, or
- 10:14wherever you get your podcast. And when
- 10:16you say a 3-month run, are you sending
- 10:18the same thing three times, once a month
- 10:21for 3 months? Yes, I'll send the the
- 10:23same card. This one that I sent out of 3
- 10:26months, I send it to three, I don't
- 10:28know, different routes each month to
- 10:30kind of test different offers, but I'm
- 10:33going to put together another one that's
- 10:34going to go to the same routes, the same
- 10:37offers to get the same exposure. So, I'm
- 10:38just it's fun to test and try different
- 10:41things and see how different parts of
- 10:42the local community respond to the
- 10:44advertisers. So. Yeah, cuz if I'm a
- 10:47restaurant, I want repeated exposure,
- 10:49right? Like I want to be on top of mind
- 10:52once a month for X number of months. Why
- 10:55is that different for a landscaping
- 10:57business? Why would they not want a
- 10:58monthly run as well? That's a great
- 11:00question and it it just comes down to
- 11:02the particular landscaper. I think, you
- 11:05know, a landscaper should, a plumber
- 11:07should. Um, I think the, you know,
- 11:09direct mail, especially utilizing the
- 11:11EDDM tool, is very It used to be, you
- 11:14know, direct mail used to be a big thing
- 11:16and then once digital came along, direct
- 11:18mail kind of died down. But it's like
- 11:20It's back, baby. Yeah, direct mail
- 11:22doesn't work. Well, it's like your
- 11:23competitors are probably all thinking
- 11:25the same thing right now. Why don't you
- 11:27go and and own the mailbox? Like you can
- 11:29still run digital. It's not here to
- 11:31replace digital. It's not better, it's
- 11:32not worse. It's just another tool in
- 11:34your toolbox to to utilize. And
- 11:36something like a shared postcard is just
- 11:38a great introduction into that world of
- 11:40direct mail. Yeah. Here's what I think
- 11:42is wild. Like, there's so much
- 11:44regulation around emailing, like the
- 11:46CAN-SPAM Act of 2004 or whatever. You
- 11:49cannot just like send emails to someone
- 11:52soliciting something unless they opt in.
- 11:54Cool, got it. Text message marketing is
- 11:56like super regulated, which I get. Who
- 11:59doesn't hate getting a a spam text out
- 12:01of nowhere, right? Interrupt.
- 12:02>> Yeah. I get it. I hate it. There's a
- 12:04$5,000 fine per text sent, right? Which
- 12:08is crazy. But when it comes to forcing
- 12:11someone to I have a 200-ft
- 12:14like gap between my front door and my
- 12:16mailbox, 200 ft. Yeah.
- 12:18>> comes to forcing a human to walk up to
- 12:20200 ft to their mailbox, risk getting
- 12:23hit by a car, in my case, check the
- 12:26mail, there's that's totally fair game.
- 12:29Anyone can mail anything they want to
- 12:30anyone on the planet, right? Yeah. It's
- 12:33wild. And it's funny that you you
- 12:35mentioned something like that cuz
- 12:37I do like I like I said, I post a lot of
- 12:38social media videos about this. And I
- 12:41will get people that would just like
- 12:43stop filling up my my trash bins. Like,
- 12:46you're sending crap to my house. Or
- 12:48you're terrible. Like, people just hate
- 12:50on me for no reason. Like, is it really
- 12:52Is it really that hard to just like toss
- 12:55it in the recycling bin? Like, like
- 12:57genuinely. And then I always say like,
- 12:59but do you see something like this with
- 13:02local businesses? Like, how many times
- 13:04is this getting sent to your house?
- 13:05Because I guarantee you it's not getting
- 13:07sent to your house very often or at all.
- 13:10So, you're just confused. Go go complain
- 13:12to like Discover or Wells Fargo. You
- 13:15know, I get those things all the time in
- 13:16the mail. So, yeah, I just think it's
- 13:18funny. I think I just realized why it's
- 13:20legal. It reminds me of the bot problem
- 13:22that Twitter's had since day one. They
- 13:24have so many bots. And for a while they
- 13:26threw around the idea of like any new
- 13:28Twitter user had to have their card on
- 13:30file, which is crazy, right? Could you
- 13:32imagine Facebook or Instagram needing
- 13:35your credit card, even if they didn't
- 13:36charge it? Like they would have no
- 13:38users. That's so much friction, but it
- 13:40was so frictionless and easy for bots to
- 13:43create and multiply and multiply on
- 13:46Twitter that like Twitter just could not
- 13:48stop it. They had no idea how many users
- 13:49were real and how many were bots because
- 13:51it was free and frictionless. Sending an
- 13:53email, sending a text is free and
- 13:55frictionless. So I feel like just the
- 13:57fact that it costs money to send mail is
- 13:59the reason why it's unregulated, right?
- 14:03It's anyone can send anything they want
- 14:05because you got to have money to do it,
- 14:07you know? That's kind of besides the
- 14:08point, but
- 14:09>> Yeah. I'm sure that like you hear a lot
- 14:12from your sponsors like, let's say I'm a
- 14:14landscaping business. I just need one
- 14:16sale to make this work, right? I just
- 14:17need one sale out of 10,000 and you're
- 14:19like, absolutely. Yeah.
- 14:21>> That's it. Sign here. Yeah. Tell me
- 14:23about some of the ROI that your sponsors
- 14:27have seen from this cuz I would imagine
- 14:30it's all across the board. You probably
- 14:31have people that are like didn't hear a
- 14:33thing, not even a phone call. And they
- 14:35maybe did, maybe didn't, but they're not
- 14:37attributing it, they're not using it a
- 14:38different phone number, whatever. And
- 14:40then you have other people that are
- 14:41like, dude, I got a $13,000
- 14:43concrete repair job from this, you know?
- 14:45This is amazing. Yeah, so that's a great
- 14:48question. That is actually one of the
- 14:50most common questions or objections that
- 14:52I get when I do this. What is going to
- 14:54be my ROI? And so I'll tell you what I
- 14:58tell them, which is I like I I I can't
- 15:00guarantee ROI. I don't promise it. Like
- 15:04I I I'm selling you exposure. Like
- 15:06you're getting exposure for into your
- 15:09local community the cheapest way
- 15:11possible except unless you go and hang
- 15:13up door hangers yourself to 10,000
- 15:15homes, but then you're paying with your
- 15:17time, which is the most expensive. And
- 15:19so I can't guarantee exposure because
- 15:22one, you know, the business type might
- 15:24not be something that homeowners might
- 15:26want. So I can't control that. Two, the
- 15:29offer on the ad. So I help these
- 15:32businesses try to come up with a good
- 15:33offer, but some just don't want to put
- 15:35an offer. They put weak offers. So I let
- 15:37them know the stronger the offer
- 15:38typically the better the results you're
- 15:39going to see. And then three which is
- 15:41probably the most important which is the
- 15:43system set up to actually keep track of
- 15:45leads. So I provide free dynamic QR code
- 15:48with every single ad. So I design all of
- 15:51the ads for free for the businesses.
- 15:52It's part of the purchase price. And
- 15:54I'll throw a dynamic QR code on there
- 15:56for them to keep track of scans. So I
- 15:58can see what kind of ads do better in
- 16:01the ads with the better offers and the
- 16:02more simple ads typically have seen more
- 16:05scans. But like even then I can't
- 16:07control if somebody calls your number
- 16:09instead of scans the QR code because
- 16:11elderly elderly person just might call
- 16:12you for their land landscaping services.
- 16:15Well, if you don't have a unique offer
- 16:17tied into that ad, well, you're going to
- 16:19have no idea how or where that person
- 16:22came from. And so that being said, some
- 16:25businesses have seen, like you said,
- 16:27more results while others have not seen,
- 16:30you know, anything. So I had a bakery on
- 16:32my cards, dropped the cards off. The
- 16:34offer right here I have it is free sweet
- 16:37pocket pie and or cookie no purchase
- 16:39necessary. We talking about Lehigh
- 16:40Bakery here? This one is grapefruit and
- 16:43thyme. Oh, okay. I love Lehigh Bakery.
- 16:46Shout out Lehigh Bakery. So that's a
- 16:47great offer. Who doesn't want a free
- 16:49cookie? And it's going to 2,500 homes
- 16:51near her bakery. Well
- 16:54dropped it off at the post office. The
- 16:55post office then distributed the cards
- 16:57the very next day. Well, she had four
- 16:59people walk in
- 17:00redeemed the offer and then bought They
- 17:04all bought additional All four? All four
- 17:06of them. And then
- 17:07>> The day that they'd landed. Exactly. And
- 17:10so she said, "I'm super like I'm so
- 17:12happy that you got on my I got on your
- 17:14card because you know, I had four people
- 17:16walk in and they bought additional
- 17:18things. Like, now you're you're
- 17:19>> Dude, a free cookie to a Utahn is like
- 17:21crack to a crackhead, dude.
- 17:22>> Exactly. That is like the best offer in
- 17:25the world. So, like, now if the what you
- 17:28bake and what you make is good, and
- 17:31these people are satisfied, well, now
- 17:32they're going to tell their neighbors.
- 17:33They're going to tell their friends. So,
- 17:34it's like
- 17:35your ROI, you know, like, you're
- 17:37you're still making money from this
- 17:38campaign, you just don't really know it.
- 17:40And then, I had a carpet cleaning guy.
- 17:43He We sent it out in May. He got a call
- 17:46in September or some, you know, to come
- 17:48clean carpets. So, that was a little bit
- 17:50probably more delayed than he would have
- 17:52liked. And then, I had a junk removal
- 17:55business that
- 17:57started getting a bunch of calls. Now, I
- 17:59I asked him if
- 18:00like, where did you convert any? He
- 18:02never filled me in on that. Dude, if I
- 18:04were you, I would make like a very
- 18:06sophisticated process about maniacally
- 18:09getting follow-up from your sponsors on
- 18:11how it's gone. Every week, every day,
- 18:14because that's going to be your best
- 18:16sales tool ever. Yeah. Those case
- 18:18studies in the Facebook groups will sell
- 18:21more than you ever can. Yeah. I need to
- 18:23I need to be cuz I I'm very tedious when
- 18:27it comes to following up when they're
- 18:28interested, but then after I send it
- 18:30out, I'm just like, "Oh, hey, how did it
- 18:31go?" Like,
- 18:32"What kind of results? Like, did it
- 18:33bring in what you thought it was going
- 18:35to bring in?" Like, some of them just
- 18:36like never fill me in on it.
- 18:38And you're right. I do need to do that.
- 18:41I need to be more
- 18:42be just as, you know, tedious with my
- 18:44follow-up after. Yeah.
- 18:47In the case of the bakery, like, for the
- 18:48first day, do you know how it looked
- 18:50like over the next two or three weeks?
- 18:52So, I know cuz I I had a couple extras
- 18:55that I gave to like one of my my wife's
- 18:58friends.
- 19:00And so, she went in, and she redeemed
- 19:02it. And I think over the course of the
- 19:043-month run, I think she paid a total of
- 19:06$350 for that entire 3-month run. I
- 19:10think she said she had 15 to 18 people
- 19:13total come in Wow. and redeem that
- 19:16coupon. And I don't I don't know if they
- 19:19bought additional items. And so
- 19:22but I do know that
- 19:23at least four or five people came in,
- 19:26they used the coupon, they bought stuff.
- 19:29You know, now they now they know if you
- 19:31know, if you what you make is what she
- 19:33makes is good or not.
- 19:34So now they can they'll probably share
- 19:36with their friends, their neighbors.
- 19:37It'll be kind of that that go-to spot.
- 19:40Like I kind of said earlier, a lot of
- 19:41these a lot of these businesses don't
- 19:42really understand kind of like the the
- 19:44exposure aspect of something like that.
- 19:46Like yeah, you maybe months two wasn't
- 19:48as good or months three wasn't as good
- 19:49as month one, but you know, you did have
- 19:52people come in from it and you don't
- 19:54know how much they're going to spend
- 19:56over the course of the next year or two
- 19:57or however long your bakery is there. Um
- 19:59cuz like one time I got Slim Chickens a
- 20:02coupon in the mail for some chickens and
- 20:04I never heard of them. But they had a
- 20:06good offer. I went and redeemed it and I
- 20:08probably paid for that entire mailing
- 20:09campaign myself for the last
- 20:12course of three years because I got the
- 20:15exposure to their business and I
- 20:17redeemed their coupon. And so that's
- 20:19what I try to tell businesses like at
- 20:21the end of like you are getting
- 20:22exposure. I I sell exposure. It's like
- 20:24it's a mini billboard that's going into
- 20:26people's mailboxes. Well, they say that,
- 20:28you know, 50% of marketing works, but
- 20:30you don't know what 50%.
- 20:32Yeah. And I mean transparently, there's
- 20:35probably some clients, some industries,
- 20:37whether the offer's good or not, it's
- 20:38just not a great fit. You know. Yeah.
- 20:40Every marketing channel is a great fit
- 20:41for every business.
- 20:42>> Mhm. Have you seen any industries that
- 20:45this works particularly well for? Home
- 20:47service industries work really well
- 20:49because, you know, like home cleaners,
- 20:51right? Everybody if whether you live in
- 20:53apartment or a $10 million house,
- 20:56you know, sometimes you want your home
- 20:57cleaned. And then if you send it to the
- 20:59right area, landscapers do well
- 21:02or just a lawn care guy. So if you they
- 21:04only specialize in lawn care. And then I
- 21:07have a like a dog yard scooping
- 21:10services, you know, junk haulers, carpet
- 21:13cleaning, window cleaning, plumbers,
- 21:16permanent holiday lighting. That's a
- 21:18huge thing in Utah. Real estate. So, we
- 21:21ran I ran an ad like what is your home
- 21:23worth? Scan to find out instantly. That
- 21:25got a lot of scans, you know, to get
- 21:27people into an email list or or whatever
- 21:29he wanted to do with that. Did you know
- 21:31you can build a six-figure business with
- 21:33only a 10,000 person email list? I just
- 21:36talked to the founder of Beehive and he
- 21:38told me that there are people with 10 to
- 21:4015,000 subscribers making more than
- 21:43newsletters that are 10 times that size.
- 21:46Here's how. Well, this one design
- 21:48newsletter with around 15,000 subs
- 21:50doesn't just sell ads. They run two-week
- 21:53online cohorts four times a year that
- 21:55generate six figures and on top of that,
- 21:57they're charging companies 20 to 30,000
- 22:00dollars to get in front of their
- 22:01audience. And that's on one small,
- 22:03focused list. This is not about going
- 22:06viral anymore. It's about owning a niche
- 22:08and monetizing it correctly. And Beehive
- 22:11gives you exactly the tools to do just
- 22:13that. Like surveys to understand exactly
- 22:15who your readers are or a built-in
- 22:18recommendation network to grow
- 22:20automatically, paid subscriptions,
- 22:22digital products, sponsorship tools, and
- 22:24you keep 100% of the revenue. You don't
- 22:27need a massive audience to run a
- 22:28successful business. You need the right
- 22:30system. So, move your email list over
- 22:33today and try out Beehive with 30% off
- 22:36for 30 days with code Chris 30 because
- 22:39this might be the simplest, highest
- 22:40leverage business that you can build
- 22:42right now. Just go to beehive.com/chris
- 22:44to learn more. That's b e e h i i
- 22:47v.com/chris.
- 22:49How did you land on pricing for this?
- 22:51There's a group of people that do this.
- 22:53Just kind of all across the nation. And
- 22:55I was able to connect with a guy in
- 22:59Ogden. So, it's about an hour and a half
- 23:01away from me.
- 23:02And so he was kind of able to show me
- 23:03the ropes like okay like how to how to
- 23:06take it to the post office like how to
- 23:07bundle everything and get everything
- 23:09ready to go and we walked through
- 23:10pricing. And so I kind of just took his
- 23:14pricing and and changed it uh but
- 23:16typically
- 23:18for a larger card like 10,000 homes, you
- 23:20don't really want to be charging more
- 23:23than 10 cents per home for a typical
- 23:25like average space. And an average space
- 23:27is going to be 16 average uh
- 23:30spaces on a card typically. So you don't
- 23:32want to make sure that one of those 16
- 23:34spaces like this is more than going to
- 23:36be more than 10 cents. Um so you know, 6
- 23:39cents per home for this space and then
- 23:40this one's going to be 10 cents per home
- 23:42because
- 23:43it's a double space. You're getting
- 23:45you're getting double the exposure. And
- 23:46so yeah, you just kind of play around
- 23:48with pricing. Some areas you can charge
- 23:49more. Mhm. Right? If you're in like
- 23:51Southern California, people are just
- 23:52typically used to paying more so you can
- 23:54you could charge $800 for one of those
- 23:56spaces. Uh whereas like if you're in a
- 23:59smaller town in the Midwest, $600 might
- 24:01be too expensive. You might want to
- 24:02charge you know, $450 or $500 for one of
- 24:06those, you know, average spaces. You
- 24:09just kind of you just got to play around
- 24:10with pricing and you know, like if you
- 24:13fill your card up in in 2 days, maybe
- 24:16you charge
- 24:16>> Prices are too low. Yeah. If it takes
- 24:18you forever to fill up your card, you
- 24:20know, maybe you may you're not doing the
- 24:22outreach enough outreach. Maybe you're
- 24:24not really
- 24:25helping them see the value or maybe
- 24:26you're charging too much.
- 24:29And so obviously if you're like I want
- 24:30to make $20,000 on one of these cards
- 24:33and send it out to 5,000 people, well
- 24:35that's just going to be unrealistic
- 24:36because Yeah. you just the value doesn't
- 24:38justify the price that you're charging.
- 24:40So you want to make sure like okay like
- 24:41600 bucks, they get 3 by 4 inch space,
- 24:44I'm designing the ad for them for free.
- 24:46I give them free revisions so if they
- 24:47hate the ad, I'm going to redesign the
- 24:48entire ad. I'll help them create a good
- 24:50offer so they don't really know where to
- 24:52start. And I provide a dynamic QR code
- 24:54for them so they don't have to go pay 20
- 24:56bucks a month for software or anything
- 24:59like that. Um so I keep track of the
- 25:01scans for them. And so I try to, you
- 25:03know, give them lots of value on the
- 25:05back end. So it's like I you like you're
- 25:07not going to have to worry about thing.
- 25:08Yeah, pricing just kind of have to play
- 25:10around with it, right? You might you
- 25:11know, if somebody's listening wants to
- 25:12try this, like maybe you want to charge
- 25:14$700, you know, and and then you can
- 25:17always go lower. So, you're looking at
- 25:19like 5 to 10 cents per home depending on
- 25:21the size of the ad. Yeah.
- 25:23>> Give or take. Where is like the the
- 25:25smaller cards like this, like you could
- 25:27charge $250
- 25:29for a 2.7 by 2.5 inch space, send it out
- 25:33to 2,500 homes, that's 10 cents a home.
- 25:36Um you can even charge the $300 and that
- 25:38comes out to like what, 12 cents per
- 25:39home? But the the barrier of entry to
- 25:42get on that card is much lower. And so
- 25:45what I have found is that most of
- 25:47businesses really just, as long as the
- 25:49reach is 2,500 homes or more, like in
- 25:51the thousands, they only are concerned
- 25:53with the price, right? And so like,
- 25:56yeah, you could have a way better deal
- 25:58and pay 6 cents to be on my 10,000 card
- 26:01or you could pay 12 cents to be on my
- 26:022,500 run card. And for them, they'll
- 26:05probably go on the 2,500 card run
- 26:08because it's a, you know, they're not
- 26:09spending as much to get on that card.
- 26:11Whereas some people, like this space
- 26:13right here, I messaged this plumber. I
- 26:15found him posting in a bunch of groups.
- 26:18And I, this is my first card that I ever
- 26:20did, and I was in the back of my truck,
- 26:23my dad's truck coming back from
- 26:24California from a wedding, and I just
- 26:25shot him a message. He said, "Yeah, I'm
- 26:27interested in the details." Sent over
- 26:28the details and then the mock of the
- 26:29mock up of my card, where it's going,
- 26:31how it all works.
- 26:33And I was charging $1,100 for that
- 26:35space. He said, "I'll do the $1,100
- 26:36space." Sent him the invoice and it was
- 26:38paid. And it took like five messages to
- 26:41sell that. So like, some people when
- 26:43they get it, they like they get it.
- 26:45>> They just get it. Yeah.
- 26:46>> it's like it does most of the heavy
- 26:47lifting for you. Well, especially if
- 26:49they're already like hustling for for
- 26:51customers in Facebook groups. Like
- 26:53they're hungry. Yeah. They're they're
- 26:54actively marketing. Like those are the
- 26:56people you want to close. You don't want
- 26:57to try to convince someone to start
- 26:58marketing their business. It's just not
- 27:00going to work. Yeah.
- 27:01>> Right? How many of these sales do you
- 27:03close like via DM or text? And then how
- 27:06many do you have to get on a call with?
- 27:07I probably close 95% of my deals over
- 27:12Messenger or text.
- 27:14>> Wow. So
- 27:15>> Without having to hop on the call. Nope.
- 27:17I sold I sold this space to a guy over
- 27:19the phone but because this real estate
- 27:21guy referred him to me.
- 27:23So he was already like a warm lead and
- 27:26you know, 10 minutes and he bought the
- 27:28$1,000 space from me. But yeah, most of
- 27:30the most of these people they come from
- 27:33my Facebook posts. In fact, this card
- 27:35every single business on this card
- 27:36except for two of them came from posting
- 27:38in Facebook groups. So I actually I did
- 27:41do outreach for it like via email but
- 27:44most of the people that took the spot
- 27:46they came they saw my post
- 27:48and then you know, 30 or 40 businesses
- 27:50would comment and I would just kind of
- 27:52sit there and
- 27:53kind of whittle them down a little bit
- 27:55and and get spaces sold. So. Are you
- 27:57able to share your screen and show a
- 27:59post? Like what one of your posts looks
- 28:01like?
- 28:01Let's see. Let me let me get pulled up
- 28:03here. And for those listening, we'll
- 28:05describe what what we're seeing here. So
- 28:08here's one I posted April 1st.
- 28:10>> you zoom in a little bit? Yeah. All
- 28:12right, perfect. So I'm putting together
- 28:16a little co-op of local businesses as a
- 28:17way to work together to reduce crazy
- 28:19marketing costs. Postcard will be sent
- 28:21to thousands of high-income homes in
- 28:23Draper featuring respected local
- 28:24businesses who serve that area. I don't
- 28:26allow competition, one from each
- 28:28industry. So it's first come first
- 28:30serve. Ooh. First come first serve,
- 28:32that's a solid way to end the post.
- 28:34>> Yeah. And then people go in and you
- 28:37know, PM sent they sent like this person
- 28:40right here. Uh I just actually sold a
- 28:42$497 space to them yesterday. Over DM.
- 28:46And so yeah, I just reached out to every
- 28:49single one of these businesses. Some of
- 28:50them Some of them just won't be a great
- 28:52fit like you were saying like they have,
- 28:54you know, an e-commerce business and I
- 28:56I'll feature I featured a few e-commerce
- 28:58businesses before, but typically I'm
- 29:00like your kind of business like yeah,
- 29:02sure, you could send it and you're
- 29:05getting exposure, but like you need to
- 29:06probably spend more time doing organic
- 29:08and Facebook running Facebook ads. So I
- 29:10will turn away businesses or like I get
- 29:13some B2B type businesses and I'm just
- 29:16like look, this is going to homeowners.
- 29:17I can still share the details with you
- 29:19if you want, but like I don't think this
- 29:21would probably be the best fit or the
- 29:23best use of your money. So some of these
- 29:25businesses like more B2B businesses and
- 29:27I just kind of I've just turned them
- 29:29away, but so yeah, it's just one of my
- 29:30posts. Here's another one from March
- 29:3218th. Same post. So I kind of post the
- 29:34same thing. I don't I will say that I
- 29:36don't spam it. I post once a week in
- 29:38these groups. Okay. How many different
- 29:40groups are you posting in? I've posted
- 29:42at 10 at a time just cuz Facebook allows
- 29:4510 total, but there are two that just
- 29:47like do really well. Okay. So I
- 29:49sometimes I
- 29:50I will post just in those two groups and
- 29:52spend time I'm in those two groups where
- 29:54sometimes I'll post in the other ones
- 29:55and like maybe one of those groups will
- 29:57get will get a comment because there's a
- 29:59very there's a very particular method
- 30:02that I like to do that I kind of
- 30:03discovered. So I'm kind of giving this
- 30:05the sauce here.
- 30:07That's what this podcast is here for.
- 30:08Perfect. We need sauce.
- 30:10When I post, I will like my own post and
- 30:14then I will comment. Comment or send me
- 30:17a DM if you're interested. So that my
- 30:18Facebook post gets a like and then a
- 30:21comment right away. Mhm. And then I will
- 30:23take my business account, my business
- 30:26page so Purple Mountain Advertising,
- 30:27excited for this one. And I will comment
- 30:30with that. I will like my post and then
- 30:32I will go back into my personal account
- 30:35and I will, you know, reply to myself.
- 30:38So now I have
- 30:39>> Proof. It's social proof. You're
- 30:40engineering your own social proof. Yeah,
- 30:42so I have I have three comments and two
- 30:45likes. And so everybody else who's
- 30:47posted at that same time, well, my post
- 30:49is now going to get pushed above theirs
- 30:50and get put on to more feeds cuz it's
- 30:52Facebook's going to start recommending
- 30:54it as something that is worth viewing, I
- 30:56guess. And there's a very particular
- 30:58time you need to post at, which I have
- 31:00found is Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday
- 31:03between 6:45 p.m. and about 7:15 p.m.
- 31:07Mhm.
- 31:08People will post at 10:00 a.m. or 12:00
- 31:11a.m. like I do custom websites. Well,
- 31:14the people that you're trying to serve
- 31:15are at work. They're not looking at
- 31:17Facebook. By the time they get back from
- 31:19work, they check Facebook. Well, guess
- 31:21what? Your post is clear down in the
- 31:23feed. They're never going to see it.
- 31:25But I post at 6:45, 7:00-ish, dinner's
- 31:27over, they're kind of sitting down,
- 31:29they're scrolling Facebook, boom. My
- 31:31post is there. It's short and sweet. So,
- 31:35I believe this part right here that says
- 31:36first come, first serve or maybe just
- 31:38the first serve part will be cut off,
- 31:40but you don't want to have a super long
- 31:42post. Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:44>> people to click see more because people
- 31:46are lazy. They're not going to click see
- 31:47more. You're just adding another point
- 31:49of friction. Exactly. And so, this post
- 31:51is short enough where they can get the
- 31:53idea and they'll comment. I mean, they
- 31:55do have to click see more. I think
- 31:57Facebook I swear Facebook shortened it a
- 31:59couple characters because I I swear, you
- 32:01know, before it it showed the entire
- 32:02post, but it still works great. And so,
- 32:05yeah, I'll post in these groups, you
- 32:08know, once a week. I posted twice
- 32:09before, but I don't want to come across
- 32:11as just spamming. But these groups are a
- 32:14great way to actually find businesses as
- 32:17well. And that's how I was able to sell
- 32:18that plumber on that $1,100 spot cuz he
- 32:20was posting in these groups. I was like,
- 32:22well, he's already open to
- 32:24getting his business name out there and
- 32:26he's spending his time posting. So, I'm
- 32:28just going to, you know, pitch it to
- 32:29him. And so, I've made, you know, fair
- 32:32amount of money just by being in
- 32:33Facebook groups, in my local business
- 32:35Facebook group. So. What types of groups
- 32:37do you have the most success in? Is it
- 32:39like the business networking groups that
- 32:40we're seeing here or is it the like the
- 32:42local city groups like, you know,
- 32:44residents of American Fork, you know,
- 32:46Salt Lake City neighbors, etc.? Business
- 32:49ones. I cuz the the neighborhood ones,
- 32:52they a lot of people are very they don't
- 32:55like the advertisements as much. And so
- 32:56there's harder to
- 32:58Yeah, or they'll it takes forever to get
- 33:00approved. And so I like these business
- 33:02networking groups because they get
- 33:03approved almost instantly or they don't
- 33:05have any they don't have to get admin
- 33:07approval. But I'll typically stay out of
- 33:10the groups that just like that are you
- 33:12don't have to like really answer where
- 33:13you're from
- 33:15and then you go into the group and it's
- 33:16just like a bunch of just like crazy
- 33:18stuff in there. You're like, what is
- 33:19this group? Like who's moderating this?
- 33:21So I won't post in those. But like this
- 33:23Utah business networking one, they
- 33:25rarely get like these spammy posts. Like
- 33:28it's a bunch of people that are actually
- 33:29trying to Yeah. network with each other.
- 33:32And so I like the Utah business
- 33:34networking and there's another like Utah
- 33:35business networking page that those two
- 33:37have I've seen the most the most results
- 33:40from. I mean Josh, you know what you got
- 33:41to do, right?
- 33:42You need to start your own Facebook
- 33:45group. This is much easier unless you
- 33:47already have. I have I have a Utah
- 33:50County Business Networking.
- 33:52Okay.
- 33:53I haven't put much work into actually
- 33:54growing it, but I do have one. People
- 33:56would be shocked at how organically you
- 33:59can get people to join your group by
- 34:01literally just creating it, filling out
- 34:03the info, and waiting. No paid ads, no
- 34:06marketing, just waiting. And
- 34:08you know, you'll go a week and you won't
- 34:09have anyone. Then you'll get two people.
- 34:12Then you'll get seven the next week.
- 34:13Then you'll get 20. Then and like like
- 34:15those will start coming. And you post
- 34:17like welcome new members. Like we've all
- 34:18seen how it works in Facebook groups.
- 34:20You could do this with 10 different
- 34:21groups at the same time like Utah HVAC
- 34:24owners, Utah home service businesses,
- 34:26blah blah blah blah blah. And you could
- 34:28have like this network of Facebook
- 34:29groups that you own the audience. Like
- 34:31you can approve every post. We did this
- 34:33for our Texas Snacks
- 34:36I heard about that.
- 34:39Yeah.
- 34:42Okay.
- 34:51So, it's a beautiful thing. Yeah, it's
- 34:53awesome. Listen, I need more people like
- 34:56this to interview on my podcast. So, if
- 34:58you know of someone with a side hustle
- 34:59or business that's unique and cool and
- 35:01super profitable, email Molly m o l l y
- 35:04at cofounders.com. That's one word,
- 35:06cofounders.com. Molly at cofounders.com,
- 35:09tell her your story and we'll give you
- 35:10100 bucks if we end up interviewing
- 35:12them. What have been your numbers so
- 35:13far? How long have you been doing this
- 35:15and what have been your revenue and
- 35:17sales numbers so far? Or revenue and
- 35:19profit numbers so far? So, I have it
- 35:21written down here. So, just these shared
- 35:23cards in the last So, I started it in
- 35:26April of this time last year as a side
- 35:29hustle, you know, I wanted to I was
- 35:31really inspired about Airbnb story where
- 35:33they had a they created those like
- 35:35cereal boxes to fund Airbnb. So, I was
- 35:37like, "Oh, man." Cuz I had a
- 35:39a e-commerce brand that I was trying to
- 35:41grow and put money into paid ads. I was
- 35:42like, "Instead of setting up, I'm just
- 35:44going to start another business." And
- 35:45so, I started last April. My revenue has
- 35:49been about 26K. Nice. Just with the
- 35:52shared cards. Profit, 14K. And then Wow.
- 35:56profit would be probably about 11K. And
- 35:59so, that That's the shared cards. And
- 36:01then I've done solo cards for
- 36:03businesses. So, just where it's just
- 36:05only their business. Mhm. My My margins
- 36:08aren't as great, but it takes It's not
- 36:10It's The effort is not as much. Uh so,
- 36:13solo cards I've done about 13K Wow. in
- 36:15in revenue and then that profit's been
- 36:17about two or three K of net profit
- 36:19there. So, So, like 40 grand in revenue
- 36:23so far, 15 profit, give or take? Yep.
- 36:27What has been your best month ever? And
- 36:30what have your recent months been? I
- 36:32would say probably last summer. Probably
- 36:35did I put together a card. It took me
- 36:38about a month and a half to put the
- 36:41entire thing together. Probably 5 or 6K
- 36:44in that month of revenue
- 36:46just by posting in those in those
- 36:48Facebook groups. Have you found other
- 36:51reliable ways of finding
- 36:53customers, sponsors? Yeah. So, that's
- 36:55just one of the methods. Obviously, cold
- 36:58calling. I've sold you know, sold a
- 37:00space or two over cold calling.
- 37:01Emailing's not my favorite. I know a lot
- 37:04of people can just absolutely crush it
- 37:05with email. I just still I don't know. I
- 37:08feel like emails get lost. But, driving
- 37:10around town, seeing yard signs, yellow
- 37:12bus people, it's like it's a goldmine.
- 37:14People because they're they're already
- 37:16open to the idea of physically
- 37:18advertising to the local community.
- 37:20>> Oh, I see. Yard signs advertising
- 37:21businesses.
- 37:22>> Yeah. So, it's like oh, power washing.
- 37:24Give them a give them a call. Give them
- 37:25a text. That's how I sold my very first
- 37:27spot. It was a junk removal guy. I was
- 37:29just like hey, I'm putting this
- 37:30Yeah, he's like yeah, like you know, he
- 37:32didn't really trust me, which I totally
- 37:34get. You're getting a text out of the
- 37:35blue. And so, we met up in person and we
- 37:38we were able you know, talk and stuff.
- 37:40But, yeah.
- 37:42Emailing,
- 37:43cold calling, Facebook, driving around
- 37:45town, walking into businesses. You can
- 37:48just you know, kind of set up a route.
- 37:50Be mindful of busy hours and stuff. But,
- 37:53I like to kind of do it digitally. How
- 37:55important is it that you're local to the
- 37:56area that you're sending these mailers
- 37:58in? You could be anywhere in the world
- 38:00and prospect any city within the United
- 38:02States and just use a like a full
- 38:04service printing option. But, being
- 38:07local gives you a benefit of knowing the
- 38:09area, right? So, like I'm doing a city
- 38:11right now. I'm prospecting a city that
- 38:13is you know, 25 minutes north of me.
- 38:15Yeah. Honestly, you could reference
- 38:17local things in any city just using chat
- 38:19GPT or Claude.
- 38:20>> Yeah. I tell people like oh, like just
- 38:22get on Google Maps, get on Google Earth,
- 38:24You kind of do a virtual drive-through.
- 38:26Just kind of see like what the town is.
- 38:28Like, what kind of vibe are you getting
- 38:29from this this town? At least get
- 38:31familiar somewhat with the town. Like
- 38:35you said, you know, ask ChatGPT, it
- 38:36could give you 100 facts about the town
- 38:39that you're you're about to prospect,
- 38:41but it just might be a little bit harder
- 38:42just cuz you're not like a local local.
- 38:45Someone's like, "Hey, let's meet up."
- 38:46What's like, "Oh, man, I'm I'm actually
- 38:48in New York." They're like, "Why are you
- 38:50prospecting a city in Oklahoma?" You
- 38:52know. Right. But I think like if you hop
- 38:54on a Zoom with them, I think you could
- 38:56easily sell spots anywhere. Man, if I
- 38:59were you, I would test to get new
- 39:00customers, I would scrape a bunch of
- 39:02businesses in a specific industry, and
- 39:05then uh send them a mailer that says
- 39:07like your ad here, your ad here, like
- 39:09your plumbing ad here, your landscaping
- 39:11ad here. And then you could inside the
- 39:13like your ad here box, you could put
- 39:16like a case study. Like Lehi, Utah
- 39:18plumber saw 300 X ROI on his and you
- 39:21could just send them to plumbers, you
- 39:23know, or to landscapers. That's a great
- 39:25idea. I have been I've never thought of
- 39:27that, but I have been thinking about
- 39:29actually starting to put money in ads
- 39:30cuz I haven't spent a a cent. Yeah.
- 39:32Actually running ads to get more
- 39:34clients. It's all been organic for me.
- 39:36Oh, that's awesome. But I was like,
- 39:37okay, you know, maybe I'm I'm starting
- 39:39to take this from a side hustle into
- 39:41more of a full-time gig. Yeah. And so
- 39:43now I've been kind of I kind of been
- 39:45setting up my business like properly.
- 39:46Like I didn't I didn't have an LLC for
- 39:48the first like two cards that I sent
- 39:51out. That's fine. I just was like,
- 39:53you know, like I need to I've started
- 39:55like I've done or started other
- 39:57businesses. I'm kind of like, you know,
- 39:59kind of like you, but on the beginning
- 40:01side of the journey where it's like you
- 40:03just feel like you want to dig your
- 40:04hands into everything. Everything you
- 40:05come across, like, I have to do that. Or
- 40:07I want to do that. Or I got to try it.
- 40:09And I always would just would get caught
- 40:10up, you know, worrying about making sure
- 40:12the website looks good and the the logo
- 40:14and all this. I was like, no, this time
- 40:16I'm not doing it. I'm just going to make
- 40:17sure I can actually make money before I
- 40:20I go and spend money on doing all this
- 40:22stuff." And so, it's like, my you know,
- 40:24I started this business for less than I
- 40:27don't know, probably like 100 bucks.
- 40:29Maybe. Wow.
- 40:30>> I bought I bought like two two guides to
- 40:33kind of get me the right directions.
- 40:34They weren't as fleshed out as I would
- 40:36have liked, but you know, it kind of
- 40:38helped me point me in the right
- 40:39direction. And but if I didn't have
- 40:40those, it would have like you could
- 40:42start this for free if you really wanted
- 40:44to. You turned a a $90 investment into
- 40:48$50,000 in a year on the side. Yeah.
- 40:50Jeez. Yep. Guys, tkowners.com, that's my
- 40:53community where people are building
- 40:54businesses. I do AMAs, Q&As every week
- 40:58live. You can ask me anything you want.
- 40:59You can have accountability partners.
- 41:01It's about a thousand people in there
- 41:02building, starting, growing businesses.
- 41:04Check out TKO as in The Corner Office,
- 41:07tkowners.com.
- 41:08What else have you been doing to pay the
- 41:10bills since then? So, you know, I found
- 41:12out that my wife was pregnant in in
- 41:14October. And I was like, "Okay, like I
- 41:16need to actually kind of start thinking
- 41:18about maybe getting, you know, more set
- 41:20up, more established a little bit." And
- 41:23so, I just started posting videos on on
- 41:24social media about it. And it did a lot
- 41:26better than I expected.
- 41:28At the beginning, I was like, "Wow,
- 41:29okay." That was just how your one of
- 41:31your employees found me. But that's
- 41:33posted on social media has brought in a
- 41:35person who wanted to do a solo card. And
- 41:38then I have a financial service guy that
- 41:41he actually put in an order for 10,000
- 41:43cards today that I will be getting sent
- 41:46off to the printers here after this. And
- 41:48so, it's been a really interesting
- 41:49journey. This has kind of snowballed
- 41:51into something that, you know, I wasn't
- 41:53really expecting a year ago. I just
- 41:54wanted some extra money to
- 41:56to put into one of my e-commerce
- 41:59businesses. And And now it's turning
- 42:01turning into this full-time this
- 42:03full-time thing with a awesome like
- 42:05community's awesome. And there's a lot
- 42:06of great members in there. And I'm
- 42:08having a lot of fun doing that, making
- 42:09these videos. So. Where did you get this
- 42:12idea from? I saw it on TikTok. It came
- 42:15at the perfect time and I think the
- 42:16TikTok had like three likes
- 42:19or five likes and a comment. I was like,
- 42:21wait a minute cuz I was looking for a
- 42:22business. I just wasn't sure what I was
- 42:24going to get started in. I was like,
- 42:26wait, this is something that seems super
- 42:28doable where I don't have to I don't
- 42:30have to spend, you know, tons and tons
- 42:32and tons of time trying to make a
- 42:34dollar. Um and it's not like affiliate
- 42:37marketing or drop shipping or, you know,
- 42:41TikTok shopping. I'm not I'm not saying
- 42:42those don't work. They really work, but
- 42:44there's just something I just wasn't
- 42:45interested in. So, yeah, I
- 42:48I saw it and then I I gave it a try and
- 42:50I was able to connect, like I said, with
- 42:51that the guy who was doing this an hour
- 42:54and
- 42:54hour and a half north of me and he was
- 42:56able to show me the ropes. So, it's been
- 42:58it's been a really fun journey so far.
- 43:01My last question, how did you land on
- 43:0310,000 mailers or 2,500? Like, why not
- 43:05100,000?
- 43:07Is it just like you just know your
- 43:08customers can't afford a You know what
- 43:11I'm saying? Like a a $10,000 mailer or a
- 43:14$5,000 mailer? I think it's just the
- 43:16printing, the way that they print them.
- 43:18They print like you can print 7,000 or
- 43:21print 8,000, but, you know, 5, 2,500, 5,
- 43:2510,000, those are just good solid
- 43:28numbers and I think the way that they
- 43:29print them and and cut them and I think
- 43:31it's just like the most like
- 43:32cost-effective batches.
- 43:35You could do 7,000, you could do 11,000,
- 43:3715, 13, whatever, but if you go on to
- 43:39like printing sites, it's like they have
- 43:41like 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and it's
- 43:43like 2,500, I think 3,000, then it's
- 43:46like you get 5,000, 10,000, 15, 20, 25.
- 43:49So, I think they
- 43:50they start to branch out by fives. And
- 43:51so, you know, 10,000's a pretty big
- 43:54size, you know, cuz most towns are going
- 43:56to be, you know, 15, 20,000 people
- 43:58maybe. And so, you know, so 2,500's a
- 44:01good entry, you know, smaller car
- 44:03typically. You don't have to charge as
- 44:06much per space, less
- 44:08um cost, and so you can sell a a card
- 44:11like this, you know, in in a day or two
- 44:13or three days if you just sit down and
- 44:16and prospect. Then something like a five
- 44:18or 10,000 card might take you a little
- 44:20bit longer, but they're all great and
- 44:22it's a it's a fantastic It's a fantastic
- 44:24business to to run, especially if you
- 44:26were looking for a side hustle to start.
- 44:28I think it's one of the best ones out
- 44:30there. How much do you think you could
- 44:32scale this business? I think you could
- 44:33really scale it to start doing other So,
- 44:36you can like you could do other prints
- 44:38marketing materials. So, if you want to
- 44:40do business cards and kind of go that
- 44:41direction. But, I think like with these
- 44:43AI tools like AI agents, websites, you
- 44:46know, you could So, you could get into
- 44:48contact, use the shared postcard as a
- 44:52way to get into touch with these
- 44:53business owners. You establish a
- 44:55connection with them, trust, they get on
- 44:57your card,
- 44:58and then you upsell, you know, Facebook
- 45:01marketing services or you have Facebook,
- 45:04you know, like for a package deal, you
- 45:05get Google SEO, Facebook marketing, and
- 45:07then a
- 45:09a spot on our shared postcard. Or you
- 45:12could say, "We'll build out you We'll
- 45:14build you out a website." Cuz there's a
- 45:15lot of businesses that I get in touch
- 45:16with that just simply don't have
- 45:18websites. You know, they want to be on
- 45:19the card. I'm like, "Well, we need
- 45:20somewhere to lead them to." So, like we
- 45:22could build out a website on the back
- 45:23end and we could bundle it together. And
- 45:25so, I think that's the way to do it is
- 45:26kind of This is just kind of upsells.
- 45:28Yeah. Like you're you're
- 45:30You're kind of getting paid to to get
- 45:33the leads, essentially.
- 45:35>> So, I remembered I was going to say I
- 45:36was going to tell a story. 12 years ago,
- 45:38I moved to to Dallas from Huntsville,
- 45:41Alabama, and I moved here to expand my
- 45:43business. At the time, it I was selling
- 45:45wholesale iPhone parts to iPhone repair
- 45:47stores.
- 45:48And the whole thesis for moving to
- 45:49Dallas was
- 45:51I realized in Alabama I was able to
- 45:54acquire customers much more easily if
- 45:56they were within a a natural one-day
- 45:58shipping radius of us. The problem is
- 46:00that Huntsville, Alabama is only within
- 46:03one-day shipping radius of like Atlanta,
- 46:05Birmingham, Nashville, not like huge,
- 46:07huge cities.
- 46:08And so, once I realized that, and you
- 46:11know, the lifetime value of our customer
- 46:13was tens or hundreds of thousands of
- 46:15dollars, I talked to my wife, and we
- 46:17looked at a map, and I just started
- 46:18typing in zip codes on like the FedEx
- 46:20one-day shipping calculator, you know,
- 46:22tool, and I realized if I lived in
- 46:25Dallas, I could ship to tens of millions
- 46:27of people overnight, but with ground
- 46:30shipping. Mhm. So, I could ship to San
- 46:32Antonio, Austin, Houston, Little Rock,
- 46:35Oklahoma City, Shreveport, Bentonville,
- 46:37and all that. This huge, huge area, tens
- 46:40of millions of people.
- 46:41And so, we moved.
- 46:43And my whole launch strategy for
- 46:45acquiring customers, which were local
- 46:48retail businesses, iPhone repair shops,
- 46:50was direct mail, for whatever reason.
- 46:52And so, I got I got these 4 by 6
- 46:54postcards printed. I got like six sets
- 46:57of them that all kind of went in order,
- 47:00and every week we would mail them out.
- 47:02So, I scraped every single repair shop.
- 47:04I had this,
- 47:05you know, spreadsheet of like 3,000 of
- 47:07them or whatever. And every single week
- 47:09we would mail out a mailer, and slowly,
- 47:11you know, our traffic started coming,
- 47:13and we got $1,000 order, $10,000 order,
- 47:15$500 order. And like for
- 47:18two or $3,000 worth of direct mail, it
- 47:20could have been more, I don't know.
- 47:22Yeah. Low thousands of dollars worth of
- 47:24direct mail,
- 47:25we built a multi-million dollar business
- 47:27just from Dallas with five or six pieces
- 47:29of direct mail to a few thousand
- 47:32>> repair shops. It's awesome.
- 47:34>> all that to say, like, you should dog
- 47:36food it, right? You should eat your own
- 47:38dog food, and use your product to find
- 47:41more services for your product. Yeah.
- 47:45I think it'll work. Yeah.
- 47:46>> So, Josh,
- 47:48thank you for your time. This has been
- 47:49great. Thank you for having me. It's
- 47:50been awesome to talk to you. Where can
- 47:52we find you and your community? So, you
- 47:54can go on to school, and it is make
- 47:57money with direct mail. And then on
- 47:59Instagram, TikTok, it is
- 48:02@directmailjosh.
- 48:04And then I think on YouTube it's
- 48:05@directmailjosh, too, or it's make money
- 48:07with direct mail. I I don't I can't
- 48:09remember if I said switch those. So,
- 48:11yeah. If you like this content, please
- 48:13share with a friend, hit a like or a
