  1. 0:00So find that place of release where the
  2. 0:02where the sound just feels like it's
  3. 0:04almost rolling out of you.
  4. 0:06[Music]
  5. 0:09Hey everyone, my name is Adam Michan.
  6. 0:11I'm a singer, songwriter, and vocal
  7. 0:13coach. And today I'm going to teach you
  8. 0:14all how to sing super high notes.
  9. 0:19[Music]
  10. 0:25Singing really high notes is one of the
  11. 0:28most sought-after skills in singing.
  12. 0:30It's required to be able to sing
  13. 0:32basically anything that's on the radio
  14. 0:34today. Gone are the days when a singer
  15. 0:36could sing in his low range and still
  16. 0:39get away with it. It's important to know
  17. 0:41that when it comes to singing high
  18. 0:42notes, we don't want to push and to
  19. 0:45strain. This is one of the major issues
  20. 0:48that a lot of people find as they're
  21. 0:50trying to sing high notes is that they
  22. 0:52will try to reach for those notes. So
  23. 0:55you'll have a singer who goes
  24. 1:01and it just going it it's straining to
  25. 1:03get up to that high note. What you need
  26. 1:06to do is take a step back and try a
  27. 1:10different approach. This approach that
  28. 1:12I'm going to teach you here is a
  29. 1:15foundation for singing high notes. To be
  30. 1:18able to sing really high, you need to
  31. 1:20first learn how to sing quietly. So,
  32. 1:23what I'd like to do now is to give you
  33. 1:25guys a few exercises that you can do to
  34. 1:29try to build into your high range. So,
  35. 1:33it's important first to know that you
  36. 1:34have somewhat of a chest voice because
  37. 1:37we need to be able to sing down low
  38. 1:40strongly in order to then go up higher.
  39. 1:43So, first we need to start with an a
  40. 1:46vowel and we're going to go into our
  41. 1:49lower range and as we move up we're
  42. 1:51going to move up into our high range
  43. 1:53without getting any louder. So, this is
  44. 1:56the key. Let's try a
  45. 2:02good.
  46. 2:07And as you're singing this vowel, you
  47. 2:09need to make sure that your jaw is
  48. 2:11opening nice and relaxed. It's not
  49. 2:14keeping closed. A lot of people will
  50. 2:16sing uh
  51. 2:20and it's it's very caught in the mouth.
  52. 2:22We want to try to allow the voice to
  53. 2:25come out and project.
  54. 2:27So, we're going to open the jaw. It
  55. 2:29allows the larynx to relax. That's this
  56. 2:32part in your throat. So, once again,
  57. 2:38good. And continue.
  58. 2:46Singing with me.
  59. 2:55Okay, now that we're getting into our
  60. 2:57bridge range, I hope you guys are
  61. 2:59keeping up with me. What I want you to
  62. 3:01do is bring down the volume. So, we've
  63. 3:03brought up our chest voice to a
  64. 3:06comfortable place, but now we're going
  65. 3:07to find those high notes at a very quiet
  66. 3:09volume.
  67. 3:11[Music]
  68. 3:18Nice and quiet. And I'm not going loud
  69. 3:20at all.
  70. 3:24[Music]
  71. 3:28Very good. Find that nice balance where
  72. 3:31you're able to allow the sound to relax
  73. 3:35into that place and you don't feel like
  74. 3:37you have to push to get there. So find
  75. 3:39that place of release where the where
  76. 3:41the sound just feels like it's almost
  77. 3:43rolling out of you.
  78. 3:48Sometimes it can help to put a little
  79. 3:51bit of a vocal fry at the beginning. If
  80. 3:53you guys don't know what vocal fry is,
  81. 3:54it's that morning voice sound that you
  82. 3:56have. Ah,
  83. 3:58and for more information on how to
  84. 4:01produce vocal fry, I have a singing
  85. 4:03program that goes into all the detail
  86. 4:07about how to do that and many many other
  87. 4:09things in the voice. But moving on
  88. 4:11forward,
  89. 4:14[Music]
  90. 4:32Keep it nice and easy. Don't push. If at
  91. 4:35any point it's starting to break apart
  92. 4:36for you
  93. 4:41and you're getting some of that type of
  94. 4:42stuff, don't worry about it. Don't
  95. 4:44sweat. Just allow it to be what it needs
  96. 4:48to be right now. So, if you're not able
  97. 4:50to go that high with keeping the vocal
  98. 4:52cords together, then what you need to do
  99. 4:55is bring it back down and each day try
  100. 4:57to go a little bit higher.
  101. 5:10Keeping it nice and soft. I'm not
  102. 5:12pushing as I go higher. I'm not going
  103. 5:16and trying to sing it louder. I'm
  104. 5:19thinking nice and easy, nice and light
  105. 5:22[Music]
  106. 5:24just like that. So the keys to remember
  107. 5:29is that we need to make sure that when
  108. 5:32we're doing making this sound, it's from
  109. 5:34a closed cord position. So when I'm
  110. 5:37singing this, I'm not singing.
  111. 5:42That's called falsetto. We don't want to
  112. 5:44go falsetto. We want to keep the vocal
  113. 5:46cords together and keep it at a very
  114. 5:48very quiet volume. So the quieter you
  115. 5:50go, the more you have to go the head
  116. 5:52voice because I I need to give a certain
  117. 5:55amount of volume in order to get
  118. 5:57falsetto.
  119. 6:02It's like almost not going to come out
  120. 6:04if I go too quiet. So I need for
  121. 6:06falsetto.
  122. 6:09My vocal cords are open. So we need to
  123. 6:12get those vocal cord closed so that
  124. 6:14we're getting the high notes and we'll
  125. 6:16be able to build pressure into there. So
  126. 6:18if your vocal cords are wide open while
  127. 6:20you're singing this, it's time to stop
  128. 6:22at that point, bring it back down the
  129. 6:25scale, and then try again. Each time
  130. 6:28increasing one note higher than you did
  131. 6:31the last time. So just going one semmit
  132. 6:34tone above. Don't push it too high. Um
  133. 6:37so again, it's the difference between
  134. 6:41falsetto and head voice.
  135. 6:45[Music]
  136. 6:47So, we want to make sure that we're more
  137. 6:49in a head voice coordination and not in
  138. 6:52falsetto because that is not going to
  139. 6:54strengthen the voice. When I'm doing
  140. 6:56head voice,
  141. 7:00I can get louder with that sound.
  142. 7:04I just get breathier with falsetto.
  143. 7:06Great job, you guys. Practice with this.
