- 0:01I see you running. I see the whole world
- 0:06running.
- 0:08Everybody is in a rush. Everybody is in
- 0:11a panic.
- 0:13I have to go here. I have to go there.
- 0:17I have to meet this person. I have to
- 0:21finish this job. But have you ever asked
- 0:26yourself, what are you running from?
- 0:30You think you are running towards a
- 0:32goal. You think you are running towards
- 0:35success or money or love. I say to you,
- 0:40you are not running towards anything.
- 0:42You are running away from yourself.
- 0:46You are terrified of yourself. You are
- 0:50terrified of silence. Just try an
- 0:53experiment. Sit in your room. Close the
- 0:56door. Turn off the television.
- 0:58Turn off the phone. Do not read a book.
- 1:02Do not smoke a cigarette. Do not pray.
- 1:05Just sit for 1 hour.
- 1:09Can you do it? Within 5 minutes, you
- 1:13will start feeling restless. Your legs
- 1:16will start shaking.
- 1:18Your mind will start screaming. Do
- 1:21something. Turn on the radio. Call a
- 1:24friend. Look at the window. Why?
- 1:27Why is it so difficult to just be?
- 1:31Because the moment you stop doing, you
- 1:34have to face your own emptiness.
- 1:38The moment the noise outside stops,
- 1:42[music]
- 1:43the noise inside becomes very loud and
- 1:47you are afraid of that noise. You are
- 1:50afraid of the mad house that you are
- 1:53carrying inside your head. So you keep
- 1:56busy.
- 1:58You create a thousand distractions.
- 2:02You go to the cinema. You go to the
- 2:04club. You go to the church.
- 2:08It does not matter where you go. As long
- 2:11as it is away from you, as long as you
- 2:15can forget yourself.
- 2:18Society has created a whole industry of
- 2:21forgetting.
- 2:23They call it entertainment. I call it
- 2:26intoxication.
- 2:28Whether it is alcohol or drugs or movies
- 2:30or politics or religion, the purpose is
- 2:35the same. To keep you unconscious,
- 2:38to keep you occupied,
- 2:41to make sure that you never ever have to
- 2:44look into your own soul. Because if you
- 2:48look, you will see a deep hole. You will
- 2:52see a deep darkness and that darkness
- 2:55scares you to death. You feel lonely.
- 2:59You feel abandoned. You feel like a
- 3:02small child lost in a dark forest.
- 3:07So you run back to the crowd. You run
- 3:10back to the noise. You cling to people.
- 3:13You cling to relationships.
- 3:16You say, "I love him or I love her." But
- 3:20look deeply. Is it love
- 3:25or is it just fear of being alone? Are
- 3:28you holding his hand because you love
- 3:30him? Or are you holding his hand because
- 3:34you are afraid to stand on your own two
- 3:37feet.
- 3:38You are using people as tranquilizers.
- 3:42You are using people to fill your inner
- 3:44void. And that is why your relationships
- 3:48are so ugly. That is why there is so
- 3:51much conflict because the other person
- 3:54is also using you. Two beggars are
- 3:57trying to rob each other. Two empty
- 4:00people are trying to fill each other.
- 4:03How can two zeros make a one? It is
- 4:07impossible.
- 4:08Stop running. Stop escaping.
- 4:12The first step towards freedom is to
- 4:15stop. Turn around. Face the emptiness.
- 4:19Face the loneliness. Don't be afraid.
- 4:23It looks like a dark abyss, but that is
- 4:27only because you have never entered it.
- 4:30If you enter it, if you have the courage
- 4:33to jump into your own emptiness, you
- 4:37will find that it is not empty. It is
- 4:40full. It is full of existence.
- 4:43It is full of light. But to find that
- 4:48light you have to understand the
- 4:50distinction, the vast unbridgegable
- 4:54distinction
- 4:55between loneliness and aloneeness.
- 4:59You have to understand the language of
- 5:01existence. In the dictionary, loneliness
- 5:05and aloneeness are synonyms. They mean
- 5:08the same thing. But in life, they are
- 5:12opposites. They are as different as the
- 5:15earth and the sky.
- 5:17They are as different as death and life.
- 5:21What is loneliness? Loneliness is a
- 5:24negative state. Loneliness means you are
- 5:26missing the other. Loneliness means you
- 5:29are empty
- 5:31and you are waiting for someone to come
- 5:34and fill you. It is a state of absence.
- 5:38You are looking at the door. You are
- 5:41looking at the phone. Why has he not
- 5:43called? Why has she not come? Your whole
- 5:47focus is on the other.
- 5:50And because the other is not there, you
- 5:54feel incomplete. You feel like a
- 5:57who has lost his crutches.
- 6:00Loneliness is a sickness. It is a
- 6:03dependency.
- 6:05It is the feeling of a beggar holding
- 6:08out a bowl, asking for attention, asking
- 6:11for love, asking for company. Please
- 6:15come and sit with me.
- 6:17I cannot bear my own company. Think
- 6:21about that. You cannot bear your own
- 6:24company. And yet you want others to
- 6:27enjoy your company. If you are bored
- 6:30with yourself, won't the other person be
- 6:32bored with you too? Aloneeness is
- 6:35totally different. [clears throat]
- 6:36Aloneeness is positive. Aloneeness does
- 6:39not mean you are missing the other. It
- 6:41means you have found yourself. It is not
- 6:45an absence. It is a presence.
- 6:49It is the feeling I am enough. I am
- 6:52complete. I do not need anyone to make
- 6:55me happy. My happiness is overflowing.
- 7:00Loneliness is dark. Aloneess is full of
- 7:03light. In aloneeness, you are not
- 7:06looking at the door. You are closing
- 7:08your eyes and looking inside.
- 7:10And you are enjoying the silence. You
- 7:13are enjoying the freedom. There is
- 7:16nobody to compromise with. There is
- 7:18nobody to fight with.
- 7:21You are the master of your own soul. A
- 7:25lonely person is always miserable
- 7:28because a beggar is always miserable.
- 7:31Even if you give him money, he remains a
- 7:33beggar.
- 7:35Even if you give a lonely person a
- 7:37relationship, he remains lonely deep
- 7:40down. He will just cling to the partner
- 7:43like a parasite.
- 7:45But a person who knows aloneeness, he is
- 7:49an emperor. He is a king. He sits on his
- 7:53throne.
- 7:55He has so much joy that he can share it.
- 7:58But he does not need to get anything
- 8:01back. His love is a gift, not a bargain.
- 8:06Society has trained you to be lonely.
- 8:09From the moment you are born, you are
- 8:12never left alone. The mother is there,
- 8:15the father is there, the teachers are
- 8:17there, the friends are there. You are
- 8:20always surrounded.
- 8:23You have forgotten how to be with
- 8:25yourself. You have become addicted to
- 8:28the crowd and because you are addicted
- 8:33when the crowd leaves you get withdrawal
- 8:36symptoms. You shake. You panic. You call
- 8:40it feeling lonely. I call it withdrawal.
- 8:44You are suffering because your drug has
- 8:47been taken away. But this suffering is
- 8:50an opportunity.
- 8:52It is a door. If you can stop running,
- 8:56if you can stop begging,
- 8:59you can transform this ugly loneliness
- 9:02into a beautiful aloneeness. [music] You
- 9:05can turn the wound into a lotus flower.
- 9:09It is the same energy
- 9:12just the direction has to change.
- 9:15Loneliness is looking out, aloneeness is
- 9:19looking in.
- 9:21Now let us bring this light into your
- 9:24life. Let us bring this understanding
- 9:26into your most painful area, your
- 9:29relationships.
- 9:31Because this is where the disease of
- 9:34loneliness hides. This is where you hide
- 9:37your emptiness. You use the other person
- 9:40as a cover. You use the other person as
- 9:44a blanket to keep yourself warm because
- 9:47you are shivering inside.
- 9:50You call it love. You write poetry about
- 9:53it. You sing songs about it. I cannot
- 9:57live without you. You are my soulmate.
- 10:00You complete me. It sounds very
- 10:04romantic. It sounds very beautiful. But
- 10:07have you ever analyzed what you are
- 10:10actually saying? When you say to a
- 10:13woman, I cannot live without you. Are
- 10:16you expressing love or are you
- 10:20expressing a desperate dependency? If
- 10:23you cannot live without her, then she is
- 10:26not your beloved.
- 10:29She is your oxygen tank. She is your
- 10:32crutch. And if she tries to leave, you
- 10:36will not let her go. You will cling to
- 10:39her. You will fight with her.
- 10:42You will strangle her because your
- 10:46survival depends on her. This is not
- 10:49love. This is pure exploitation. You are
- 10:53using a human being as a utility.
- 10:57You are using a human being to plug the
- 10:59hole in your soul so that the wind does
- 11:02not whistle through it. And the tragedy
- 11:05is
- 11:06the other person is doing exactly the
- 11:09same thing to you. She is also lonely.
- 11:13She is also empty. She is also looking
- 11:17for a father or a mother or a savior and
- 11:22she has found you. So what happens when
- 11:26two lonely people meet? What happens
- 11:28when two beggars meet on the road? One
- 11:31beggar has a begging bowl. The other
- 11:34beggar has a begging bowl. And they both
- 11:38extend their bowls to each other. Give
- 11:41me happiness, says the husband. Give me
- 11:44happiness, says the wife.
- 11:47But how can you give what you do not
- 11:50have? The husband is empty. The wife is
- 11:53empty. Two zeros meet and they try to
- 11:57create a one. It is impossible. Two
- 12:01zeros do not make a one. Two zeros make
- 12:04a double zero. The misery is multiplied.
- 12:08Before you were married, you were
- 12:10miserable alone. Now you are married,
- 12:13you are miserable together. And misery
- 12:16likes company.
- 12:18When you are miserable together, it
- 12:21feels a little better. You can blame the
- 12:23other. When you are alone, you have
- 12:26nobody to blame.
- 12:28You have to face your own ugliness. But
- 12:32when the wife is there, ah what a
- 12:36relief. You can say I'm angry because of
- 12:40her. I'm sad because she does not
- 12:42understand me. My life is a mess because
- 12:45I chose the wrong woman. It is a great
- 12:49strategy to avoid selfresponsibility.
- 12:53Relationships are the greatest hiding
- 12:55places for the [music] ego.
- 12:58You can go on fighting for 30 years, 40
- 13:02years and the fight keeps you occupied.
- 13:05The fight keeps you from looking into
- 13:08the abyss.
- 13:09Have you ever observed the couples
- 13:12around you? Look at your parents. Look
- 13:15at your neighbors. Look at the people
- 13:18walking in the supermarket.
- 13:20Do you see love in their eyes? Do you
- 13:23see a dance? Do you see a celebration?
- 13:26Or do you see boredom? Do you see a
- 13:28heavy dull tolerance?
- 13:31They are just tolerating each other.
- 13:34They are dragging each other like heavy
- 13:37corpses.
- 13:39Why? Why does the poetry turn into such
- 13:42ugly pros? Because the foundation was
- 13:45wrong. The foundation was fear. The
- 13:49foundation was loneliness.
- 13:52You were afraid to be alone. So you
- 13:55rushed into a relationship. You grabbed
- 13:58the first person who was willing to grab
- 14:00you back.
- 14:02You did not fall in love. You fell into
- 14:05a trap. You fell into a mutual
- 14:08arrangement of safety.
- 14:11I will scratch your back. You scratch
- 14:14mine. I will protect you from your
- 14:17loneliness. You protect me from mine.
- 14:22But sooner or later the illusion wears
- 14:26off. The honeymoon cannot last forever
- 14:29because you cannot pretend to be full
- 14:31when you are empty. Eventually the
- 14:35demands start. Why are you not making me
- 14:39happy? Why are you not fulfilling me?
- 14:43And the other person screams back, but I
- 14:46thought you were going to make me happy.
- 14:50and then the divorce and then the search
- 14:53for a new partner. This car was broken.
- 14:56Let me buy a new car. But the driver is
- 14:59the same.
- 15:01You are the same. You carry your
- 15:03loneliness with you. You will destroy
- 15:05the second woman just as you destroyed
- 15:08the first one because you are a black
- 15:10hole. Whatever comes into you
- 15:13disappears.
- 15:16I want you to stop this madness. I want
- 15:19you to stop looking for the right
- 15:21person. There is no right person.
- 15:24As long as you are the wrong person,
- 15:27every person will be the wrong person.
- 15:30And you are the wrong person as long as
- 15:33you are lonely. You have to learn the
- 15:36art of being alone first. This is the
- 15:40fundamental law of love. Only a person
- 15:43who is happy alone can be happy
- 15:46together. It sounds like a paradox but
- 15:50it is the truth. If you are happy alone,
- 15:54you don't need a relationship. You don't
- 15:56have a hole to fill. You are
- 15:58overflowing.
- 16:00You have so much love growing in your
- 16:02garden that you want to share it. You
- 16:04are looking for someone to receive it.
- 16:07You are not a beggar. You are a giver.
- 16:10And when a king meets a queen, when two
- 16:13people who are masters of their own
- 16:16aloneeness meet,
- 16:19then there is love. Then there is
- 16:22freedom because they don't need each
- 16:24other. They enjoy each other. There is
- 16:27no grip. There is no clinging. They are
- 16:31like two birds flying in the sky. Side
- 16:35by side, together yet separate. close
- 16:40yet free.
- 16:42But to reach that sky,
- 16:45you have to fix your own wings first.
- 16:49You have to stop leaning on others.
- 16:52You have to break the mirror of
- 16:55relationship and look into the mirror of
- 16:57your own being.
- 17:00Why are you so afraid to be alone? Why
- 17:03does the silence terrify you so much?
- 17:06Because deep down you know that you are
- 17:09nobody.
- 17:11Deep down you have no face. You have no
- 17:14name. You are just a vast emptiness.
- 17:18And to hide this emptiness
- 17:21you run to the crowd. You seek
- 17:24belonging. You want to be part of a
- 17:26group. It does not matter what the group
- 17:29is. It can be a church. It can be a
- 17:32political party. It can be a Rotary
- 17:35club. It can be a football team. It can
- 17:39be a nation. The name of the crowd does
- 17:42not matter. The function of the crowd is
- 17:45the same. It gives you a fake identity.
- 17:49When you are alone, you are just a human
- 17:52being. But in the crowd, ah
- 17:56suddenly you are a proud American.
- 17:59Suddenly you are a devout Christian.
- 18:02Suddenly you are a socialist. The crowd
- 18:05gives you a mask and you wear the mask
- 18:09tightly because without it you don't
- 18:12know who you are. Look at the psychology
- 18:16of the sheep. A sheep never walks alone.
- 18:19It is always in the mob. It rubs its
- 18:22body against other sheep. It feels the
- 18:26warmth of the crowd. It feels safe. I'm
- 18:31not alone. There are thousands of us. We
- 18:34must be right. The crowd gives a false
- 18:37sense of security. If the wolf comes,
- 18:41maybe he will eat the other sheep, not
- 18:44me. But look at the lion. The lion walks
- 18:48alone. He has no need for a crowd. He
- 18:51has no need for a shepherd. He knows his
- 18:54own strength.
- 18:57The wider the road, the more it is for
- 19:00the sheep. The narrower the path, the
- 19:04more it is for the lion.
- 19:07And the path to truth is extremely
- 19:11narrow. It is only wide enough for one
- 19:14person. [music] You cannot take your
- 19:16crowd with you to the truth.
- 19:19You cannot take your wife, your
- 19:22children, your priest with you. You have
- 19:25to go alone.
- 19:27But you are addicted to the drug of the
- 19:30crowd. It is an intoxicant.
- 19:35When you are in a stadium shouting with
- 19:3850,000 people, do you feel yourself? No.
- 19:42You forget yourself.
- 19:45You become part of a collective madness.
- 19:48You lose your intelligence. Have you
- 19:51noticed
- 19:53the intelligence of a crowd is lower
- 19:56than the intelligence of its stupidest
- 19:58member. [music] Alone you might be a
- 20:01professor.
- 20:03But in a mob you become an idiot. You
- 20:06start burning buses. You start throwing
- 20:09stones. Why? Because in the crowd you
- 20:13dissolve your responsibility. I did not
- 20:16do it. Everybody was doing it. This is
- 20:19the bribe. The crowd says to you, "Give
- 20:23us your soul. Give us your
- 20:25individuality.
- 20:27And in return, we will give you safety.
- 20:31We will take away the burden of
- 20:33responsibility. And you sell your soul.
- 20:36It is a very cheap bargain.
- 20:40You sell your consciousness just to feel
- 20:43comfortable."
- 20:44And the crowd hates the individual.
- 20:47Remember this, the crowd does not like a
- 20:50man who stands on his own feet. Why?
- 20:54Because the individual is a reminder.
- 20:57The individual is a mirror. When a Jesus
- 21:01walks by or a Buddha walks by, the crowd
- 21:05feels insulted because looking at the
- 21:08Buddha, they realize their own slavery.
- 21:11Looking at his freedom, they realize
- 21:14their own chains. And nobody wants to
- 21:17admit they are a slave.
- 21:20So what do they do? They kill the
- 21:22Buddha. They crucify Jesus. They poison
- 21:25Socrates. They destroy the mirror so
- 21:27they can go back to sleep. They call the
- 21:30individual crazy. They call him
- 21:33asentric. They ostracize him. To be an
- 21:37individual takes guts. It takes a chest
- 21:41of steel because you will be condemned.
- 21:44Your family will condemn you. Why are
- 21:48you not like your cousin? He has a good
- 21:51job. He goes to church. He is normal.
- 21:54Society will condemn you. Why are you
- 21:58not following the rules? You will be an
- 22:01outsider. You will be a stranger in your
- 22:05own land.
- 22:06But I tell you, blessed are the
- 22:10strangers. Blessed are the outsiders
- 22:13because only the outsider is truly
- 22:16alive.
- 22:18The insider is just a cog in the
- 22:21machine. He is safe, yes, he is
- 22:25respectable, yes, but he is dead. He has
- 22:28been dead for years. [music] They just
- 22:32haven't buried him yet. If you want to
- 22:35find aloneeness,
- 22:37you have to step out of the crowd. You
- 22:40have to drop the labels. Stop calling
- 22:43yourself a Hindu.
- 22:46Stop calling yourself a democrat. Stop
- 22:49calling yourself anything. Strip
- 22:52yourself naked of all these adjectives.
- 22:56Just be a noun. Just be a consciousness.
- 23:01It will be cold at first. When you leave
- 23:04the warmth of the sheep, the wind is
- 23:07cold. You will shiver. You will want to
- 23:10run back to the fold, but don't go back.
- 23:14Endure the cold because in that cold
- 23:18wind
- 23:19for the first time you will feel the
- 23:23texture of your own skin. For the first
- 23:26time, you will hear the beat of your own
- 23:29heart. And that beat is the only
- 23:33scripture worth reading.
- 23:35I do not promise you a rose garden. I do
- 23:39not promise that the moment you sit
- 23:42alone you will see angels playing harps.
- 23:46No,
- 23:47at first it will be hell. At first it
- 23:53will be a torture.
- 23:55When you leave the crowd, when you turn
- 23:58off the phone, when you sit in your
- 24:01room, the first thing you will encounter
- 24:04is not peace.
- 24:06It is fear. A trembling fear. It feels
- 24:10like you are dying. And in a way, you
- 24:13are dying. Your ego is dying.
- 24:17The ego exists only in relationship. The
- 24:21ego exists only in the eyes of others.
- 24:25When the others are gone, the ego starts
- 24:28suffocating.
- 24:30It starts gasping for air. It screams,
- 24:34"Where is everyone? Who am I? If nobody
- 24:37is looking at me," this screaming is
- 24:40what you feel as anxiety. This is the
- 24:43abyss.
- 24:45And because the ego is afraid of dying,
- 24:48it will throw everything at you. The
- 24:52moment you become silent, your mind will
- 24:55go crazy. It will become a mad house.
- 24:59Suddenly you will remember things you
- 25:02had forgotten for 20 years. Oh, I should
- 25:06have said that to my boss. Why did I
- 25:09lose that money? What if I get cancer?
- 25:13What if nobody loves me? All the
- 25:17repressed garbage will surface. It is
- 25:21like cleaning a house that has not been
- 25:24cleaned for centuries.
- 25:27The moment you start sweeping, the dust
- 25:31flies everywhere.
- 25:33You will choke on the dust, you will
- 25:36feel sad, you will feel depressed, you
- 25:39will feel bored to death.
- 25:42And this is the point where 99% of
- 25:46people turn back. They say this
- 25:48meditation is no good.
- 25:50I am feeling worse than before.
- 25:54They say, "I was happy when I was
- 25:56watching the football game. Now I am
- 25:58just miserable." So they turn on the
- 26:01television. They run back to the
- 26:04alcohol. They run back to the
- 26:06girlfriend. They cover the abyss again.
- 26:10I say to you, don't turn back. This
- 26:14misery is not bad. This misery is a
- 26:17healing crisis.
- 26:19When you stop taking the drug, the
- 26:22withdrawal symptoms appear. If you run
- 26:25back to the drug, you will remain an
- 26:28addict forever. You have to endure the
- 26:31withdrawal, you have to pass through the
- 26:34fire.
- 26:36This is the test of the warrior. Can you
- 26:40sit with your pain? Can you sit with
- 26:42your boredom? Can you sit with your
- 26:45ghosts without doing anything? Without
- 26:49trying to fix it, without trying to
- 26:51escape,
- 26:53just watching,
- 26:55just saying, "Okay, the fear is here.
- 26:57Let it be. I will watch it. The sadness
- 27:00is here. Let it be. I will watch it."
- 27:04If you can stay there, if you can sit on
- 27:07the edge of the abyss and not jump back,
- 27:11a miracle happens.
- 27:13It is the greatest miracle in human
- 27:15life.
- 27:17Slowly slowly the dust settles because
- 27:23you are not feeding the thoughts. They
- 27:25start to die
- 27:28because you are not fighting the ghosts.
- 27:31They disappear. The mind sees that you
- 27:34are not interested. You are just sitting
- 27:37like a stone Buddha. So the mind gives
- 27:41up.
- 27:43And when the mind gives up, when the
- 27:46noise stops, the abyss changes its
- 27:49quality. Suddenly it is no longer a dark
- 27:54hole. It becomes a vast open sky. The
- 27:59silence that was threatening you now
- 28:02starts caressing you. The loneliness
- 28:06that felt like death now feels like a
- 28:10resurrection.
- 28:12You realize I'm not the noise. I'm the
- 28:16watcher of the noise. And in that
- 28:18watching you are free. You have crossed
- 28:21the threshold.
- 28:22You have moved from the marketplace to
- 28:25the temple. But you have to pay the
- 28:28price and the price is facing your own
- 28:32darkness. You cannot reach the peak
- 28:35without passing through the valley.
- 28:38The darker the night, the closer the
- 28:41dawn. Don't be afraid of the dark. Sit
- 28:44in it. Let it engulf you. Because only
- 28:48when you are totally lost can you be
- 28:53found.
- 28:54And if you survive the fear, if you
- 28:58survive the monsters of the abyss, you
- 29:01will meet the second enemy. And this
- 29:05enemy is even more subtle, even more
- 29:09slippery. The enemy is boredom.
- 29:13You come to me and you say, "Oh, I tried
- 29:16to sit silently, but I got so bored. I
- 29:20felt like my legs were dying.
- 29:23I felt like time had stopped. I could
- 29:26not take it. I know. I know it is
- 29:30difficult.
- 29:31In fact, boredom is the primary disease
- 29:35of the modern man. The ancient man was
- 29:38not bored. The primitive man is not
- 29:40bored. But the civilized man, he is
- 29:43bored to death.
- 29:46Why? Why is boredom such a torture for
- 29:50you? Because you are an addict. You are
- 29:53a stimulation junkie. Your mind is
- 29:56constantly demanding, "Entertain me.
- 29:59Give me something new.
- 30:02Give me a new movie, a new car, a new
- 30:05scandal, a new gossip. You are like a
- 30:08beggar constantly asking for excitement.
- 30:12And when the excitement stops even for
- 30:16one minute, you panic. You feel flat.
- 30:21You feel dead. What is boredom? Have you
- 30:25ever analyzed it? Boredom simply means
- 30:28you have lost contact with the flow of
- 30:31life. Life is never bored.
- 30:35Look at the tree outside your window. It
- 30:37stands there for 100 years. It does not
- 30:40move. It does not go to the cinema. It
- 30:44does not scroll on a phone. Is it bored?
- 30:47Look at the cow chewing grass. It goes
- 30:50on chewing and chewing.
- 30:53The same grass, the same field. Is it
- 30:56bored? No. Their eyes are peaceful. They
- 31:00are in a deep harmony.
- 31:03Only man is bored. Because only man has
- 31:07stepped out of the present moment.
- 31:09Boredom is nothing but the mind saying,
- 31:12"I don't want to be here. I want to be
- 31:15there. I don't want this moment. I want
- 31:19the next moment." The gap between where
- 31:21you are and where you want to be, that
- 31:24gap is boredom. But I tell you, boredom
- 31:28is not just a nuisance. Boredom is a
- 31:31layer. It is a protective layer that you
- 31:34have built around your soul. Imagine an
- 31:37onion.
- 31:38The outer skin is your social mask. If
- 31:42you peel it, you find the layer of
- 31:44boredom. And why is it there?
- 31:48Because underneath the boredom there is
- 31:52repressed pain and underneath the pain
- 31:55there is repressed joy. You are using
- 31:59boredom as a lit. You keep yourself
- 32:02bored. So you don't have to feel the
- 32:04intense things bubbling underneath.
- 32:07If you sit with the boredom if you don't
- 32:12run away suddenly the lid will blow off.
- 32:17First the pain will come up, tears will
- 32:20flow, you will cry for no reason. And
- 32:24then after the storm,
- 32:27the joy will come up. But you never
- 32:30reach the joy because you stop at the
- 32:33boredom. You turn back at the gate.
- 32:36Boredom is the gatekeeper.
- 32:38It is a dragon guarding the treasure.
- 32:41And you are such a coward. The moment
- 32:45you see the dragon, you run back to your
- 32:48television.
- 32:50You have to learn a new art. The art of
- 32:53being bored. Yes, I'm serious. Be bored.
- 32:57Be totally bored. Don't fight it. Don't
- 33:01try to read a magazine to escape it.
- 33:05Sit in the middle of the room and say,
- 33:07"Okay, I am bored. Let me taste this
- 33:11boredom. What does it taste like? If you
- 33:14accept it, if you say yes to it, a
- 33:18miracle happens.
- 33:21The quality of the boredom changes. It
- 33:24loses its heaviness. It becomes
- 33:27transparent. It becomes peace.
- 33:31What you call peace is just boredom that
- 33:34has been accepted. And what you call
- 33:38boredom is just peace that has been
- 33:40rejected.
- 33:42It is the same energy. When you reject
- 33:45it, it feels heavy. When you accept it,
- 33:49it becomes light. It becomes silence.
- 33:53A Zen master sits facing a wall for 10
- 33:56years. Bodhi Dharma sat for 9 years
- 34:00facing a wall. Can you imagine just
- 34:02looking at a blank wall?
- 34:05You cannot look at a wall for 9 minutes.
- 34:09You will go crazy. What is on the other
- 34:12channel? What is on Netflix?
- 34:16But Bodhi Dharma was not bored. He was
- 34:19thrilled. He was in ecstasy. How?
- 34:23Because he was not looking for
- 34:25entertainment from the outside.
- 34:28He was so full of light inside that even
- 34:32the wall became beautiful. When your
- 34:35eyes are clear, everything is beautiful.
- 34:38Even a speck of dust dancing in the
- 34:41sunbeam is enough to keep a mystic in
- 34:44awe for hours. You are bored because you
- 34:48are blind. You are bored because you are
- 34:51dead inside. You have lost your wonder.
- 34:55You look at a flower and you say, "Oh,
- 34:58it's a rose. I have seen it before." You
- 35:02label it and you move on. You don't
- 35:04really see it. If you really saw the
- 35:07rose, the miracle of it, the color, the
- 35:11fragrance, the life energy, you could
- 35:14cry with joy. You would never be bored
- 35:17again. So the next time you feel boredom
- 35:22approaching, do not reach for the phone.
- 35:25Do not call a friend. Take it as a
- 35:28challenge.
- 35:29Say, "This is the threshold. Beyond this
- 35:33lies the kingdom. Close your eyes. Dive
- 35:36into the boredom. Go to the very bottom
- 35:38of it. It will feel like you are
- 35:41suffocating. Let it suffocate you. Let
- 35:44the ego die in that boredom.
- 35:48And suddenly you will come out on the
- 35:51other side fresh, young, alive. You will
- 35:55look at the world with new eyes.
- 35:58The boredom was just the cleansing of
- 36:01your old eyes. It was the price you had
- 36:05to pay to regain your innocence.
- 36:08So, how does the miracle happen? How do
- 36:12you transform this lead into gold?
- 36:16How do you turn the ugly feeling of
- 36:19loneliness into the beautiful state of
- 36:22aloneeness? It is not a physical change.
- 36:27You do not have to leave your family and
- 36:29go to the Himalayas. You do not have to
- 36:32divorce your wife. It is an internal
- 36:35alchemy. It is a shift in your focus.
- 36:39The first thing to understand is do not
- 36:42fight loneliness.
- 36:44If you fight it, you give it energy.
- 36:48If you suppress it, it will go deeper
- 36:50into your subconscious and it will
- 36:53control you from there. Whatever you
- 36:55resist persists.
- 36:57So the first step is absolute
- 37:00acceptance. When loneliness comes, say
- 37:03hello. Treat it as a guest. Open the
- 37:06door and let it in. Do not slam the door
- 37:09in its face.
- 37:12Sit down with your loneliness. Befriend
- 37:15it. It is your feeling. Why are you
- 37:18afraid of your own feeling? It is a
- 37:20cloud passing through your sky. Watch
- 37:23it. Look at its texture. Is it sad? Is
- 37:27it heavy? Is it dark? Don't judge it.
- 37:31Don't say this is bad. Don't say I
- 37:34shouldn't feel this. Just say it is.
- 37:38This is the secret key. Witnessing. The
- 37:41moment you watch your loneliness without
- 37:44judgment, a strange thing starts
- 37:47happening.
- 37:49Because you are watching it, you become
- 37:52separate from it. The watcher is never
- 37:55the watched. If you can see the lamp,
- 37:58you are not the lamp. If you can see the
- 38:02pain, you are not the pain. You are the
- 38:05consciousness.
- 38:07And as you watch, as you bring the light
- 38:10of your awareness to the darkness of
- 38:13loneliness,
- 38:15the darkness starts to evaporate. It
- 38:19cannot stand the light. Loneliness is
- 38:23essentially a shadow. It is a shadow of
- 38:26your unconsciousness.
- 38:29When you bring consciousness in, the
- 38:32shadow disappears.
- 38:34But it does not just disappear into
- 38:37nothingness. It transforms into
- 38:40something else. It becomes presence.
- 38:44Suddenly you are no longer focused on
- 38:47who is not in the room. You become
- 38:50focused on who is in the room. You are
- 38:52there. For 40 years the room was empty
- 38:57because you were always looking out the
- 38:59window. You were looking for the
- 39:02postman, looking for the lover, looking
- 39:05for the friend. You were never at home.
- 39:07But now you have closed the window. You
- 39:11have turned around and you are shocked
- 39:14to find that the emperor is sitting on
- 39:16the throne. You are the emperor. This
- 39:20shift from missing the other to finding
- 39:24oneself is the transformation.
- 39:28Now the silence is not empty. It is
- 39:32full. It is full of your own vibe. It is
- 39:35full of your own song. You feel a
- 39:39tremendous strength arising in you. A
- 39:43strength that says I am enough. I was
- 39:47born alone. I will die alone. And in
- 39:50this moment I am perfectly alone. And
- 39:54there is no sadness in it. There is a
- 39:57dignity in it. There is a sacredness in
- 39:59it. Think of the peaks of the Himalayas.
- 40:04Mount Everest stands alone. It does not
- 40:07need a crowd of mountains around it to
- 40:10feel important.
- 40:12It stands high piercing the sky in
- 40:17absolute silence. That silence is
- 40:21aloneeness. And you have an Everest
- 40:24inside you.
- 40:26But you are crawling in the gutter
- 40:29looking for company. When you could be
- 40:32touching the stars.
- 40:34Once you have tasted this aloneeness,
- 40:38you are free. You are free from the
- 40:40world. You are free from the need for
- 40:43approval.
- 40:45You don't care what people say about
- 40:48you. Why should a lion care what the
- 40:51sheep say? You don't care if people
- 40:54leave you. Let them leave.
- 40:56[clears throat]
- 40:57Your happiness does not depend on them.
- 41:00Your happiness is your own creation. It
- 41:04bubbles up from your own center like a
- 41:07fresh spring.
- 41:09And the paradox is
- 41:12when you no longer need people, people
- 41:15are drawn to you.
- 41:18When you are no longer a beggar, people
- 41:22want to be with you because now you have
- 41:25something to give. You have a light.
- 41:29You have a peace that radiates.
- 41:33Moths are attracted to the flame, but
- 41:36the flame does not care. The flame is
- 41:38just burning in its own glory.
- 41:42Become the flame. Stop being the moth.
- 41:45Stop circling around others hoping for a
- 41:49little bit of warmth. Ignite your own
- 41:52fire.
- 41:53And the fuel for that fire is
- 41:56witnessing.
- 41:57Watch the loneliness. Watch the fear.
- 42:00Watch the boredom burn them all in the
- 42:03fire of awareness.
- 42:06And what remains is the pure gold of
- 42:10aloneeness.
- 42:12So we come to the final understanding,
- 42:16the ultimate truth of your life. Whether
- 42:19you like it or not, this is the reality.
- 42:23You are alone. When you were born, you
- 42:27came alone. Nobody accompanied you into
- 42:30the womb. Nobody accompanied you out of
- 42:33the womb.
- 42:35And when you die, you will go alone.
- 42:38Even if your whole family is standing
- 42:42around your deathbed crying,
- 42:45you will be alone in your journey. They
- 42:48can hold your hand, but they cannot go
- 42:51with you. They cannot share your death.
- 42:54And if you are alone in the beginning
- 42:57and alone in the end, how can you be
- 43:00together in the middle? The middle is
- 43:03just an illusion. The middle is just a
- 43:07dream that we create to forget our
- 43:10alowneness.
- 43:12We fill the gap between birth and death
- 43:15with noise, with crowds, with
- 43:18relationships.
- 43:19We try to pretend that we are not alone.
- 43:23But deep down you know in the dark of
- 43:27the night when you wake up suddenly you
- 43:30know you are an island. I am asking you
- 43:35to stop fighting this truth. I'm asking
- 43:38you to celebrate it. Aloneeness is not a
- 43:42curse. It is your nature.
- 43:45It is the nature of existence.
- 43:48God is alone. There is nobody else. So
- 43:52if you are alone, you are godlike.
- 43:56The moment you accept your aloneeness,
- 44:00the misery disappears because the misery
- 44:03was coming from the fight. The misery
- 44:07was coming from the expectation that
- 44:09someone should be with me. Drop the
- 44:11expectation. Relax into your aloneeness.
- 44:16Settle into it like a king settling into
- 44:19his throne.
- 44:21And when you settle, a new romance
- 44:25begins. But this time it is not with
- 44:28another. It is with yourself. You start
- 44:32falling in love with yourself. You look
- 44:36at your own face in the mirror and you
- 44:38say I am enough. You enjoy your own
- 44:42body. You enjoy your own mind.
- 44:46You enjoy your own silence.
- 44:49You become your own best friend.
- 44:52And this is the secret. Only a person
- 44:55who loves himself can love others.
- 44:59If you hate yourself, if you are bored
- 45:01with yourself, you will hate others too.
- 45:04You will project your selfhatred onto
- 45:07them.
- 45:09But if you are overflowing with joy,
- 45:13your love becomes a sharing.
- 45:16You don't go to a woman to get love. You
- 45:20go to a woman to give love. because you
- 45:23have too much.
- 45:26You are a raincloud heavy with rain
- 45:28looking for a parched earth to shower
- 45:31upon. That love is freedom. That love
- 45:34has no chains.
- 45:36That love is not a relationship.
- 45:39It is a state of being.
- 45:43So my invitation to you is simple. Don't
- 45:47run to the crowd. Run to yourself. Don't
- 45:51look for a home in others. Be a home
- 45:53unto yourself. Light your own lamp. It
- 45:57will be scary at first. The path is
- 46:00steep. But as you climb, the air becomes
- 46:04cleaner. The noise of the world fades
- 46:07away. And you are left with the only
- 46:10thing that matters, the only thing that
- 46:13is real, the only thing that never dies.
- 46:16You
