The Secret Language of Floor Plans: Adding Dimensions and Annotations | Lesson 09 — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00now we're at lesson 9 we're going to add
- 0:01a really crucial piece of detail to your
- 0:04drawings that's going to be annotations
- 0:07now annotations are great for two
- 0:08reasons the first is that they're really
- 0:10essential to show a level of detail such
- 0:13as Dimensions room tags area tags floor
- 0:16finishes Etc and these are really
- 0:19crucial to communicate to anyone with
- 0:22any level of understanding of
- 0:24architecture or your project in general
- 0:26so they can pick up the drawings pick up
- 0:28the design and be able to understand the
- 0:30with the level of annotation and
- 0:31information shown in the drawings the
- 0:33second reason why annotations are really
- 0:35powerful is that they're a great graphic
- 0:37touch and they add a layering and a
- 0:40professionalism to your drawings in this
- 0:42lesson I will walk you through the
- 0:43process of adding annotations within
- 0:45rayon some of these annotations will be
- 0:48not necessarily required at this level
- 0:50of detail but they will also show you
- 0:52the vast range and the variety of
- 0:55annotations that you can add using the
- 0:57rayon tools so annotations let's add
- 1:03them if you're familiar with my drawing
- 1:06style as an architectural designer you
- 1:08will know that I like my black and white
- 1:10drawings with a punch of color and
- 1:12normally that punch of color is red so
- 1:14in this annotation lesson I'm going to
- 1:16show you how you can Implement all your
- 1:18annotations with a punch of red and the
- 1:21reason why I add a color is because not
- 1:24only does it help just make your
- 1:25drawings pop because you're given
- 1:27something um that enhances the drawing
- 1:29dra and makes your drawings a bit more
- 1:31appealing and engaging but also
- 1:33differentiates the two levels of
- 1:35information you have the drawing itself
- 1:37which is in black and white and then you
- 1:39have the annotations which is in a
- 1:40separate color so you can kind of
- 1:42differentiate the the information
- 1:44between the two now this will be a fine
- 1:47Balancing Act of not overwhelming your
- 1:49drawings with too many annotations not
- 1:51having too much color Etc so there's a
- 1:53fine balance now when we head over to
- 1:55this left hand side here you can already
- 1:56see that I have a key and specifications
- 1:58that I want to start apply to the
- 2:00drawings so I have room names and tags I
- 2:03have floor finishes we've got Window and
- 2:05Door specifications we've got floor
- 2:08finish level section lines and grid
- 2:10lines now grid lines are a really great
- 2:12addition to help make sure that your
- 2:14drawings are properly positioned
- 2:16correctly and coordinated correctly on
- 2:18site to make sure that when you layer
- 2:21ground floor first floor roof plan all
- 2:23over the top they're easily read between
- 2:25them now the first item that I'm going
- 2:28to show you is going to be Dem
- 2:29dimensions and dimensions is a really
- 2:31great addition to drawing it's just to
- 2:33help someone get an indication of scale
- 2:35now dimensions are really easy to add in
- 2:37rayon and the first thing that we're
- 2:39going to do before we add the dimensions
- 2:41is head over to the left hand side and
- 2:43once again create a new layer for the
- 2:45dimensions now this is really important
- 2:47because when you are adding your
- 2:48Dimensions you want to make sure that
- 2:50they're on the top layer because you
- 2:51want them to be the top information on
- 2:53your drawings so when you create a new
- 2:56layer for your Dimensions make sure you
- 2:57drag it to the top so that the DI
- 2:59dimensions are going to sit on top of
- 3:01your drawings so now that we have the
- 3:03dimensions layer created I'm going to
- 3:05head down to the tab at the bottom here
- 3:07same as usual where we have the poly
- 3:09lines we have the wall tools Etc we also
- 3:12have annotation tools so the first one
- 3:15is going to be dimensions and as you can
- 3:17see when you select Dimensions you can
- 3:19choose how you want to have your
- 3:22Dimensions aligned so for example I'm
- 3:24going to have everything of my
- 3:25Dimensions parallel you could have them
- 3:27at an angle it could be
- 3:30rotated and you can also either do a
- 3:32single Dimension or chained so multiple
- 3:35Dimensions at once which is a really
- 3:37great way of populating your drawings
- 3:39very quickly now before we start drawing
- 3:42any Dimensions I'm going to head over to
- 3:44the right hand side here and you can see
- 3:46that I have the Styles tool which I'm
- 3:49going to start edit so I'm going to make
- 3:52sure that all my annotations is going to
- 3:53be red uh so that is correct I'm however
- 3:57going to drop the opacity slightly
- 4:00or more quite significantly actually
- 4:02because I don't want the dimensions to
- 4:03be too prominent on the drawings I don't
- 4:05want them to overwhelm the drawings so
- 4:07I'm going to have them as a low opacity
- 4:09so they kind of sit in the background
- 4:12now when we come to the next lesson
- 4:13where we go into graphic styling then we
- 4:16can really start playing with the layers
- 4:18and how they look uh graphically but for
- 4:22now I'm going to have them as quite a
- 4:23thin opacity quite a low opacity on the
- 4:27drawings so the text is going to be
- 4:28Roboto
- 4:30you can then change the text size I
- 4:32think 0.15 is okay you can change the
- 4:34line weight you can change the dash of
- 4:36course and you can change the Arrow Head
- 4:38so there's lots of different options
- 4:40this is probably a a preferable
- 4:44dimension for most but I'm going to use
- 4:46this Arrow Head like so now the way
- 4:49Dimensions work is all you have to do is
- 4:51select one component select the other
- 4:55end of your component and then drag it
- 4:57up and you have your dimension and then
- 5:00you could do a chained item so if we go
- 5:03to Dimensions we could do a chained item
- 5:06where we could select multiple keep
- 5:07selecting our items we can see that we
- 5:11can then do multiple at the same time
- 5:14and you can keep going so they they
- 5:16chain as one and just before I start
- 5:18populating the drawings with all of the
- 5:19dimensions you can also change the
- 5:22canvas units and suffix Etc so if you
- 5:26head over to the right hand side here
- 5:27you can change the units from meters to
- 5:30millimeters if you'd wanted to or inches
- 5:33I'm going to stick with meters for now
- 5:35you can then click the three but three
- 5:37dots you can then change the Precision
- 5:40uh I.E the decimal
- 5:42place um you can change the suffix so
- 5:44you can remove the meters and then you
- 5:46can also change the square area uh Etc
- 5:50and as you can see I've populated my
- 5:52drawings with Dimensions I haven't gone
- 5:54too over the top but I've kind of
- 5:55highlighted the main components the
- 5:57width of openings the some of the wall
- 5:59all components uh where we have doors
- 6:02and windows for example likewise with
- 6:04the Upper Floor and then if we head to
- 6:07the roof and in section and elevation
- 6:10I've added just some widths which I
- 6:14think are really nice addition and you
- 6:16could also do Heights if you wanted to
- 6:18now the next item is going to be grid
- 6:20lines and I think grid lines like I've
- 6:22mentioned are really crucial to help
- 6:25someone have a reference a kind of
- 6:27reference point when looking at your
- 6:29draw drawings uh between the levels to
- 6:31make sure that they can measure off
- 6:33those grid lines and position their
- 6:35drawings correctly so the way that I'm
- 6:36going to do my grids is I'm going to
- 6:38come over to this left hand side here
- 6:39I'm going to select my grid item that I
- 6:42have saved and also note that you will
- 6:44have access to all of these tags from
- 6:47this lesson so you are very welcome to
- 6:49use any of these tags and of of course
- 6:51all of the tags available in the block
- 6:54Library you've got pretty much every tag
- 6:57you can think
- 6:58of that you can drop into your drawings
- 7:01but in this instance I'm going to drag
- 7:02my grid line over to the top and what
- 7:05I'm going to do is I'm going to center
- 7:06it along this top line here and now for
- 7:09the grid I want it to be fairly logical
- 7:13of course we want a horizontal grid and
- 7:15we want a vertical grid and now because
- 7:16my drawing is at kind of slight angles
- 7:19um it makes it a little bit more tricky
- 7:21but the the logic is is that we'll
- 7:23probably have one grid along the top
- 7:25because that's the kind of main
- 7:26reference point to the page we then have
- 7:28a second grid grid through here which I
- 7:31will kind of just make a note of as we
- 7:33go through and we want to make sure
- 7:36they're always centered to the walls so
- 7:38you have one
- 7:40two and then
- 7:42potentially a third grid here and then a
- 7:46fourth grid and maybe a fifth one here
- 7:49and then vertically we could potentially
- 7:51have a
- 7:53b c maybe this one here could be a grid
- 7:56as well D and then e at the the end here
- 8:00so there we have a bit of logic to the
- 8:02drawing and we can copy them up to the
- 8:04upper levels and the way that I'm going
- 8:06to edit them is I'm going to select the
- 8:09line I'm going to change it to a dashed
- 8:12stroke so we're going to do a dash
- 8:14stroke and we'll change that to maybe do
- 8:17five of course we'll change that to red
- 8:19and then we'll use this header copy it
- 8:24down and then we can change this to two
- 8:28and as you can see we've now got a logic
- 8:30that you can refer to when you come to
- 8:32the upper floors you can see that we've
- 8:33got one grid one grid B and C aligned so
- 8:38when you're referring to certain
- 8:39components you could say grid C1 and
- 8:43it's also a nice graphic addition to the
- 8:46drawing I like having a number or a
- 8:48letter addition with the circle head I
- 8:51think it looks nice and it gives the
- 8:53drawing a bit of order now the next
- 8:54annotation is going to be levels so
- 8:56we're going to do floor finish levels so
- 8:58ffls so this floor plan is fairly flat
- 9:01we obviously have a patio area out the
- 9:03back and we have this driveway uh that
- 9:05slopes in from this upper level here um
- 9:08and then on the upper floors we will
- 9:10have in section we can show the
- 9:12different heights to also get an
- 9:13indication of floor to ceiling Heights
- 9:15and how tall some of the volumes are on
- 9:17the drawings so to start annotating
- 9:21these drawings with FFL levels I'm going
- 9:23to head over to my left hand side I have
- 9:26this block item which is a spot
- 9:27elevation item uh which we can copy over
- 9:30with the text so I'm just going to do
- 9:32copy and drop that over here and do this
- 9:35as paste and now we can scale this down
- 9:38a bit because we don't want it too
- 9:39prominent in the drawing and we're going
- 9:42to indicate that this is actually plus
- 9:440.15 so we're going to suggest that
- 9:47maybe we have a floor a kind of finished
- 9:49floor of a 15 mil buildup which would
- 9:53indicate then that we have an outdoor
- 9:57area like so copy and P this over and
- 10:00maybe this outside is going to
- 10:04be 0 0 and I'm going to copy this across
- 10:08the drawing I'm not going to go too
- 10:09crazy with it maybe indicate that this
- 10:11outdoor patio area is level 02 so we've
- 10:15got have a a slight step down from the
- 10:17out from the
- 10:18inside uh we can indicate that the
- 10:21garage is 0
- 10:230 we can maybe indicate that
- 10:26this level up here
- 10:30is
- 10:32potentially we could say 1.2 so it's got
- 10:36a 1.2 M
- 10:38full as you drive in and on the Upper
- 10:41Floor here we can add a level in and if
- 10:43we head down to the section we can check
- 10:46that height so we're going to use the
- 10:48dimension tool we can measure up to that
- 10:52point so we have a 3.3 m
- 10:593.3 likewise in section elevation we can
- 11:02do the same tool but kind of add grid
- 11:06lines and level lines instead so rather
- 11:08than showing a kind of spot elevation
- 11:09point on plan we can now show it in
- 11:12elevation now what we're going to do is
- 11:13a very similar thing to what we did with
- 11:15the grids we're going to draw a line to
- 11:17indicate this level I'm going to copy
- 11:20the elevation point and instead of
- 11:24having it in this configuration we're
- 11:25going to have an elevation a kind of a
- 11:28level marker
- 11:29here a level Market there and then we're
- 11:33going to change this to a
- 11:37dashed five dashed red again and we can
- 11:42do that throughout so we have our base
- 11:45level so our datum level which is going
- 11:47to be zero and then we have 3.3 M we
- 11:51have a a chimney for the fireplace at
- 11:564.33 and we have a pitched roof at 7 .7
- 11:59M so we got some nice floor to ceiling
- 12:01Heights in these upper floors likewise
- 12:04in section I also have a tag that you
- 12:06guys can drop in uh which will show a
- 12:08floor finish level so spot
- 12:11elevation in section now the next item
- 12:14is going to be room tags so there's two
- 12:16ways of doing this you can either tag
- 12:19the zone that you've applied to a
- 12:21particular room so for example if you
- 12:23were to drop a Zone
- 12:25into this room here you can see that the
- 12:28tag
- 12:29is applied to that zone automatically
- 12:32and we can come over to the right hand
- 12:33side make sure the zone is selected we
- 12:35can type
- 12:36in office for example or another way of
- 12:40doing it is if you already have a Zone
- 12:42applied you can come down to the bottom
- 12:44here you can select the tag annotation
- 12:47you can then select the Zone which will
- 12:50create a tag so we could say that is the
- 12:52Living Kitchen and we can click yes and
- 12:56then we can scale that down to 0.1 for
- 12:58example
- 12:59which is very small and then you can
- 13:01come down you can select edit tag you
- 13:04can select this add variable tool and
- 13:08you could add a area onto that tag you
- 13:12could add a length onto that tag and
- 13:16this way you can build your tag from the
- 13:18kind of from the ground up by tagging a
- 13:21Zone and it will give you the variables
- 13:23based on that zone now in this instance
- 13:25I want to indicate obviously the
- 13:27division of these spaces I want to
- 13:29indicate that there's a living space a
- 13:31dying space Etc so a useful tool if you
- 13:33wanted to actually break down these
- 13:35spaces is to use these Zone dividers so
- 13:38for example you could then potentially
- 13:40divide this space by indicating that
- 13:43that is the living Zone like so and
- 13:45we're just going to extend that up and
- 13:47then when you drop a Zone into the area
- 13:48you can then get an accurate calculation
- 13:50of the square meters Etc so that is one
- 13:52way of doing it but instead I'm going to
- 13:54I'm simply going to do it with some text
- 13:57so I'm going to head down to the bottom
- 13:59I'm going to select text and I'm going
- 14:01to call
- 14:03this entrance
- 14:07Lobby and I'm going to scale this down
- 14:10once
- 14:11again nice and small but still a little
- 14:15bit prominent we're going to change it
- 14:16to cooland because I like the kind of
- 14:19bold text it makes the drawings pop a
- 14:21bit more I'm going to change that to red
- 14:25and I'm also going to have a little tag
- 14:28so we're going to come over here
- 14:29to our tags I'm going to sel select the
- 14:32entrance hall tag copy it
- 14:35over paste it into place that is far too
- 14:39big so we're going to scale that down
- 14:42like so and there we
- 14:45have our entrance Lobby or entrance hall
- 14:48and we have something like this where we
- 14:50have the spaces identified using the
- 14:54text
- 14:56tool come to the Upper Floor we have
- 14:58bedroom three bedroom 2 family WC
- 15:00reading Nook so we've got a nice little
- 15:02reading Zone there now master bedroom
- 15:06and that's just a nice and easy way to
- 15:08be able to control the annotations that
- 15:10you add to your rooms and now we're
- 15:12going to get into some of the items that
- 15:13aren't probably necessarily required for
- 15:16drawing at this detail but I'm going to
- 15:17show you them anyway to give you an idea
- 15:19of the variety of annotations you can
- 15:21add so the next one is going to be
- 15:23adding floor finishes so indicating a
- 15:25floor finish now I already have over
- 15:27this left hand side the key with all the
- 15:29specifications of the floor finishes
- 15:31that have been applied so what I'm going
- 15:32to do is I'm going to copy over these
- 15:36Tags I'm going to drop them into the
- 15:39zones and I'm going to remove some of
- 15:41the specifications cuz we probably don't
- 15:43need those we'll make that
- 15:46smaller and now that we're happy with
- 15:48the size of the text we can then select
- 15:51the text and we can create a style for
- 15:53that text that we can Implement
- 15:55throughout the drawing and then to
- 15:57finish up this tag I'm going to draw a
- 15:59rectangle around it and the square
- 16:02rectangle is a little harsh so what
- 16:04we're going to do is we're going to use
- 16:05the filet tool so we're going to select
- 16:07the item going to head down to the
- 16:09bottom we're going to go to fet or filet
- 16:12fillet however you want to say it select
- 16:15filla and what you'll have is you'll
- 16:16have two options you either do a single
- 16:18or all what we're going to do in order
- 16:20to create a curve throughout the edge of
- 16:24the rectangle we're going to select all
- 16:25and as you can see here as you drag in
- 16:28you can can type the radius in but in
- 16:30this instance we're just going to drag
- 16:31it in slightly like so we're going to
- 16:35head to the right hand side again we're
- 16:36going to make that a solid
- 16:39white and drop the opacity slightly and
- 16:42then once again we're going to save that
- 16:43style as Flo
- 16:46finish rectangle and copy that
- 16:49throughout have a carpet floor cover for
- 16:51the office we
- 16:54have carpet on the upper levels so it's
- 16:56all carpet on the Upper Floor and next
- 16:59addition extra level of information that
- 17:00is always useful to add to a drawing and
- 17:03then just adding windows and door tags
- 17:05once again I have all the specifications
- 17:07lined out not going to bore you through
- 17:09the process of me adding all of these to
- 17:11all of the doors but for example we can
- 17:13copy this item over the front
- 17:16door and we'll just paste it like so and
- 17:21we'll place it kind of centrally to the
- 17:23door and the final annotation tool that
- 17:25I want to show you is going to be
- 17:27leaders and arrows so these are really
- 17:30great to add notes to your drawings and
- 17:32add some kind of commentary uh any kind
- 17:34of features or particular components
- 17:36that you think is slightly ambiguous and
- 17:38that you need to kind of explain a
- 17:40little bit in your drawings you can head
- 17:42down to the bottom here we could do a
- 17:45leader if you select one end for example
- 17:48if we want to highlight this kind of
- 17:50dual fireplace you select one component
- 17:53which gives you the first point so this
- 17:56is the Arrow Head of your annotation you
- 17:59select the next and then you get the
- 18:02leader where you can type let's call
- 18:04this a
- 18:07jewel
- 18:08fire
- 18:10place and you can then change the color
- 18:13of that once again to Red we can maybe
- 18:15make this a subtle annotation cuz we
- 18:18don't want it too heavy you can change
- 18:20the Arrow Head and once again this is
- 18:22just good to indicate some features that
- 18:25you want to add a bit more detail to and
- 18:27just add a note to in your drawings so
- 18:30custom made bookshelf for
- 18:33example uh in floor plan we also can add
- 18:37some kind of guttering notes we could
- 18:42add kitchen island the Dual sided
- 18:47fireplace and now we have a good level
- 18:49of annotation to the drawing once again
- 18:52it's not about overwhelming the drawing
- 18:54with too much annotation you have to be
- 18:56careful in not overwhelming the drawings
- 19:00and distracting the drawings once again
- 19:01as I mentioned earlier in the course by
- 19:04not adding too many hatches you don't
- 19:05want to add too many annotations
