the scientifically proven #1 singing exercise — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00yes you read that right the number one
- 0:02scientifically proven
- 0:03exercise for your voice
- 0:12let's check it out right now my name is
- 0:13adam meshan i'm a singer songwriter and
- 0:15vocal coach
- 0:16and as you can see i've got this little
- 0:18straw that is extremely
- 0:19thin and that's the goal you want to try
- 0:21to find as
- 0:22thin of a straw as possible because that
- 0:25is
- 0:25where you get the most benefit because
- 0:28there is a special back pressure that is
- 0:30sent to the vocal cords so let's talk a
- 0:31little bit about the science behind it
- 0:33now i do not
- 0:34claim to have done the scientific
- 0:36research behind it a
- 0:37scientist by the name of dr ingotite is
- 0:40the one that has
- 0:41done the vast majority of the research
- 0:43behind this exercise but
- 0:44let's talk a little bit about the
- 0:46science behind it why it helps your
- 0:48voice
- 0:49why it is the number one best exercise
- 0:51so let's talk a little bit about what's
- 0:53going on when you sing through a straw i
- 0:55guess first i should try to demonstrate
- 0:57what i'm talking about
- 0:58so essentially we just take the straw
- 0:59and then we blow air in our voice
- 1:02through the straw so to sound like this
- 1:03just on a slide
- 1:05[Music]
- 1:10now when we do this we are putting our
- 1:13voice through a very very very small
- 1:15opening and when we do that as long as
- 1:17we create a good seal around the straw
- 1:19which is a key
- 1:19important aspect so we don't want to go
- 1:22where i've got sound and air moving on
- 1:25the outside
- 1:26of the straw we want everything to go on
- 1:27the inside
- 1:28[Music]
- 1:33what this does is it helps with the
- 1:35phonation of the vocal cords it helps
- 1:37with the vocal cords
- 1:38vibrating squares them up and gets them
- 1:41to vibrate as
- 1:42efficiently as possible as well if you
- 1:44imagine your lungs fill up with air when
- 1:47you breathe in when you breathe out and
- 1:48you sing
- 1:49you expel that air through your vocal
- 1:51cords from the bottom
- 1:52upwards and they come out that air comes
- 1:55out when we're singing through the straw
- 1:57we send some of that pressure back down
- 2:00to the vocal cords and what happens is
- 2:02you have something called supraglottal
- 2:04pressure that supraglottal pressure
- 2:07helps to equalize the pressure that's
- 2:09coming from below the vocal cords
- 2:10and allows the vocal cords to vibrate as
- 2:13effectively as possible now what some
- 2:15people will notice when they're doing
- 2:17this exercise is that their voice is
- 2:19actually
- 2:19able to hit notes that they otherwise
- 2:22would not be able to hit and this fact
- 2:24is due
- 2:24to the pressure that's built up the
- 2:27semi-occlusion that's happening
- 2:29at the lips and this falls into a family
- 2:31of exercises that are all
- 2:33semi-occluded vocal exercises that would
- 2:35be lip rolls
- 2:36tongue trills all those ones that you're
- 2:38actually creating some sort of blockage
- 2:40at the mouth that sends back that back
- 2:42pressure
- 2:42but the straw also extends your vocal
- 2:45tract so that's another
- 2:46really big benefit to it is that it
- 2:48extends that vocal tract
- 2:50and increases the harmonic content which
- 2:52then feeds back to the vocal cords but
- 2:54it's really
- 2:55incredible how i've taken this vocal
- 2:58exercise through with many different
- 3:00students
- 3:00with similar issues with their voice and
- 3:03how it is
- 3:04able to dramatically improve all of
- 3:06those students
- 3:07vocal issues within a very short period
- 3:10of time that's why i believe
- 3:11it is one of the best vocal exercises
- 3:14and i've included it in my main flagship
- 3:16course
- 3:17as a foundational vocal exercise to be
- 3:20doing
- 3:20every single day and so it's part of
- 3:23almost every module
- 3:24in that course if you want to sing with
- 3:26more confidence and power then you have
- 3:27to sign up for my lesson subscription
- 3:30you get two group lessons with me
- 3:32personally every single week you get
- 3:34access to all my courses
- 3:35and you get access to recordings of all
- 3:37my one-on-one lessons with my students
- 3:40that will help you learn vicariously
- 3:42through them click the link down below
- 3:44to sign up now
- 3:46so now that we've talked a little bit
- 3:47about the science behind why the straw
- 3:50is so effective for the voice let's
- 3:52actually do some vocal exercises and
- 3:54walk you through
- 3:55a regimen that you can do with the straw
- 3:57to be able to
- 3:58see the most improvement from it and
- 4:00also the part that i think most people
- 4:03miss
- 4:03is start to see those improvements
- 4:05happen also in your voice
- 4:06so if you walk through this step-by-step
- 4:09regimen on a daily basis
- 4:11you will 100 see improvements so i want
- 4:14to put forward
- 4:15a challenge for all of you i want you to
- 4:17all sing
- 4:18one line from a song that gives you
- 4:20trouble so
- 4:21i want you to pick that song choose one
- 4:24that is
- 4:25challenging so not a super easy one and
- 4:27i want you to record it
- 4:28right now so stop the video record that
- 4:31one line right now
- 4:32that is giving you trouble and then what
- 4:34we're gonna do is after you're done this
- 4:36regimen you're gonna re-record that line
- 4:38and we're gonna see if that doesn't
- 4:40didn't make a difference so first off
- 4:42what we're gonna do
- 4:43and i hope you all took the time to stop
- 4:46record it
- 4:46and then come back so when you're ready
- 4:49come back
- 4:49let's run through it so we're gonna
- 4:51start off just by
- 4:53starting with some low slides now these
- 4:55low slides are going to work out your
- 4:57chest voice get the phonation
- 4:59there in your chest voice operating to
- 5:00its maximum capacity
- 5:02but don't feel because this is going to
- 5:04be for both males and females
- 5:06females don't feel like you have to
- 5:08match my pitch just the overall feel of
- 5:11where your low range is try to kind of
- 5:13find that spot so we're gonna start
- 5:24good
- 5:30now it's totally normal to feel this
- 5:31back pressure you're actually going to
- 5:33feel it if you have a super narrow straw
- 5:35you'll feel it in the lower ranges
- 5:43[Music]
- 5:44so right there my voice was breaking a
- 5:46little bit that's okay we're not trying
- 5:48to disguise the break we're just
- 5:50exploring to find what's going on with
- 5:52our voice
- 5:53in the moment
- 5:53[Music]
- 6:02so now i'm extending the range a little
- 6:04bit higher i'm going
- 6:05up above my bridge so let's say my chest
- 6:08voice is here
- 6:09my mix is right around here and then my
- 6:12head voice is up above
- 6:14so this is what we're doing here
- 6:23so make sure that you allow your voice
- 6:25to get up into your head voice what i
- 6:27don't want to hear
- 6:28is
- 6:29[Music]
- 6:32we don't want to do that we don't want
- 6:33to start adding volume and adding
- 6:35pressure
- 6:36and adding extra force should all be
- 6:38relatively light trying to stay
- 6:40in our full voice at the bottom and then
- 6:42slowly moving
- 6:43upwards and allowing the voice to shift
- 6:45gears that's important even if it shifts
- 6:48gears
- 6:48with a break
- 6:49[Music]
- 6:52and does a little bit of that that's
- 6:54fine much better to do that than to
- 6:56force it to do something that it's not
- 6:58ready to do so let it break
- 7:00let it flip up into that higher range
- 7:02just to get the feel
- 7:03of your whole range from bottom to top
- 7:17now we're going to do one of the
- 7:18variations to the slides we're going to
- 7:20do the hills so we're going to go
- 7:22[Music]
- 7:27and all the way down
- 7:35also make sure that your tongue i
- 7:37noticed a little bit of tongue tension
- 7:38there on myself so you want to try to
- 7:40let it relax by your bottom teeth you
- 7:42don't want it jumping around
- 7:43or retracting in the back of the throat
- 7:46[Music]
- 7:56and what you'll notice and i want you to
- 7:58pay particular attention to
- 8:00here is on the heels you're gonna feel a
- 8:02lot of abdominal pressure you're gonna
- 8:04feel a lot of your abs
- 8:06squeezing so put a hand around your
- 8:08belly button just to bring your
- 8:09conscious awareness
- 8:10and create a muscle mind connection
- 8:13[Music]
- 8:17i feel that all the way to my back and
- 8:19even my pelvic floor i'm feeling
- 8:21engaging for this part okay so now we've
- 8:23done a couple of
- 8:24slides upwards let's try from the top
- 8:26down
- 8:31good and we're not looking for a perfect
- 8:33sound we're looking for just release
- 8:35anything that's nice and relaxed
- 8:41[Music]
- 8:47gonna do this a couple more times
- 8:54[Music]
- 8:56good now what we're going to do is we're
- 8:58going to pick your
- 8:59song the very same line from the song
- 9:02that you chose earlier
- 9:03we're now going to sing again after
- 9:05doing this now the key element is to
- 9:07follow exactly what i'm doing
- 9:09in your situation obviously i can't know
- 9:11what the song that you chose is but i'm
- 9:13going to be doing
- 9:14a relatively difficult line from a song
- 9:16for myself
- 9:17and you guys follow along with your song
- 9:20so don't do exactly the same melody that
- 9:23i'm doing
- 9:24i'm gonna pick just so that this doesn't
- 9:25get copyrighted i'm gonna pick the
- 9:27national anthem and the rockets red
- 9:29glare so we're working with the line
- 9:32and the rockets red glare
- 9:35okay so let's take that line what we're
- 9:37gonna do you're gonna do it with your
- 9:39straw
- 9:39on your melody we're gonna go
- 9:45good we're gonna do it again
- 9:50get your straw do it with me one more
- 9:52time
- 9:53[Music]
- 9:57now what we're gonna do is take the
- 9:58straw out midway through the line and
- 10:00we're gonna do it on ah
- 10:06and again
- 10:06[Music]
- 10:07[Laughter]
- 10:10and again
- 10:11[Music]
- 10:15and now what we're gonna do is double up
- 10:17the line we're gonna go
- 10:22and the rock gets red glare
- 10:26and now we're going to just sing the
- 10:28line
- 10:29and the rock it's red glare
- 10:33and see if for you if that line doesn't
- 10:36become
- 10:36just a little bit easier after doing
- 10:38that whole
- 10:40run through following it step by step
- 10:42with your melody
- 10:43see what happens record that now what i
- 10:46want you guys to do
- 10:47send me those recordings okay so i want
- 10:49to hear your before and after
- 10:51and really hear the improvement and the
- 10:53difference between
- 10:54the two because there is going to be a
- 10:56huge difference so you can send that
- 10:58over to me
- 10:58through my website amvocalstudios.com
- 11:01i'll leave a link down below i'll also
- 11:02leave my email address there you can
- 11:04just send that over to me i would love
- 11:06to hear your before and afters
- 11:08so hope you liked this video if you did
