- 0:05does this Pace seem familiar for so many
- 0:08of us the everyday routine can feel like
- 0:11a game of Beat the Clock squeezed
- 0:14between children struggling to grow up
- 0:16come George got to go and parents
- 0:18struggling to age with dignity good to
- 0:21see you welcome to the sandwich
- 0:28generation Bob Turner left for work well
- 0:31Before Dawn Georgie but for 57-year-old
- 0:33jeie Turner Wy wakey eggs and bakey this
- 0:37is just a typical day a tug of war
- 0:40between Time Love and Money time to get
- 0:44up buddy school
- 0:45day it's just 6:30 but in 15 minutes
- 0:49It'll be time to leave for school you
- 0:51don't get much sleep no I 2 to 5 2 to 4
- 0:55hours a night so if you're in the
- 0:57sandwich generation which part of the
- 0:59sandwich are you I'm in the middle I'm
- 1:01in between the bread and the and the
- 1:03meat one in every eight Baby Boomers
- 1:06between the ages of 40 and 60 is both
- 1:09raising a child going to have a good day
- 1:11today hope so and caring for an aging
- 1:14parent that's a great picture of you and
- 1:17Henry on your wedding day and it's
- 1:19because of two things boomers are opting
- 1:21to have children later in life while at
- 1:23the same time their parents are living
- 1:25longer lives hence the squeeze it's both
- 1:29emotional and financial so do you lie
- 1:32awake at night are you at the clock M
- 1:35kind of a panicky feeling sometimes the
- 1:37greatest trials for me is taking care of
- 1:40that second family of of of children and
- 1:44my mom is a time away from my job so
- 1:47here's Bob Turner selling printing jobs
- 1:50on 100% commission and I'm used to
- 1:53working 7 days a week 10 hours 12 hours
- 1:56a day and then all of a sudden finding I
- 1:59I couldn't work that um my income went
- 2:04down dropping from a cushy
- 2:08$180,000 a year to just 80,000 and the
- 2:11401K the IRAs they've all been
- 2:14disappeared too even the family's rainy
- 2:17day fund has been tapped who prepares
- 2:19for a real
- 2:21emergency you know that sneak up on you
- 2:24a parent that's 94 years old that that's
- 2:28in a nursing home kids that are
- 2:30teenagers that are very
- 2:33costly now it's high noon and jeie is
- 2:37heading out to visit her mother-in-law
- 2:38Bernice the Beloved matriarch of the
- 2:41Turner family Bernice outlived her own
- 2:44finances years ago her living expenses
- 2:47and medical bills drained a fair chunk
- 2:49of the Family Savings now a stroke has
- 2:52put her permanently in a nursing home
- 2:55jeie and Bob make it a point to see her
- 2:57every day are you tired are you going to
- 3:00go back to bed are you adding to the
- 3:03pressure of being caregivers is the
- 3:06stress of navigating the complicated and
- 3:09convoluted language of Social Security
- 3:12insurance policies Medicare Medicaid
- 3:15it's all about paperwork I have learned
- 3:17that Medicare and Medicaid change and
- 3:19they change their policies and unless
- 3:21you keep up with that the bills never
- 3:23stop coming
- 3:24in it's late afternoon when jeie starts
- 3:27to get dinner together her thoughts it's
- 3:29never far from George and Shea the
- 3:32children Bob and Genie adopted 12 years
- 3:34ago who are costing the couple a lot
- 3:37more than they ever expected but love
- 3:40doesn't have a price tag especially in
- 3:43this case they were both severely abused
- 3:46they were homeless both the children
- 3:49have uh bipolar disease and and our
- 3:52daughter has reactive attachment
- 3:53disorder a very very serious U mental
- 3:56illness we go to psychiatrist once every
- 3:593 months psychologist once a week and
- 4:01have for 12 years and we pay out of our
- 4:03pocket for that Shea is currently
- 4:05serving time in jail on felony charges
- 4:08an outcome of her mental illness
- 4:11sometimes life's choices seem less
- 4:13sandwich more vice grip we're trying to
- 4:16get her mental help which is very
- 4:19difficult it's
- 4:21all almost too
- 4:24much I'm
- 4:27sorry wondering who will will be there
- 4:30for them as they age Genie and Bob are
- 4:33learning the hard way how to best
- 4:35prepare for the unknown organization is
- 4:38key just legal things have to be in
- 4:40order you need power of attorney you
- 4:43need medical power of attorney you have
- 4:45to have your bank statements your birth
- 4:47certificate death of a if your spouse
- 4:50died nothing will get done unless you
- 4:52have these these records in Play It's
- 4:55the sandwich generation for which this
- 4:58is especially important Memorial Parks
- 5:00burial plots headstones all the things
- 5:04that you don't want to talk about when
- 5:05your parents are alive are things that
- 5:06are really important to have in play in
- 5:09case something God forbid should happen
- 5:12good to see you it's quter to 7 to see
- 5:16you a rare moment to relax with family
- 5:18and friends Cheers Cheers reaching out
- 5:22for support is
- 5:24crucial sharing the good times great
- 5:28expectation great expect hey all right
- 5:31and the not so good with people who
- 5:34understand I think it's it's the only
- 5:36way to get through it is to have a
- 5:39support system friends family neighbors
- 5:42whatever it takes a sense of humor
- 5:45doesn't hurt either we always tease
- 5:47people that we'll be working when we're
- 5:4890 Walmart if you need a greeter here we
- 5:51are I'm never going to give up so
- 5:54tomorrow I'm going to take Georgie to
- 5:56school uh I'm going to go to the nursing
- 5:58home to see your mom me meanwhile the
- 6:00clock is ticking it's getting late time
- 6:03to get organized and get some sleep for
- 6:05the sandwich generation tomorrow starts
- 6:08early as usual
