- 0:11All the
- 0:16alhamdulillah.
- 0:31Thank you for joining me tonight and we
- 0:34will continue inshallah as we've been
- 0:37speaking about in the last couple of
- 0:39episodes or the last couple of meetings
- 0:41that we've had. We've been delving into
- 0:44the writings of a particular character
- 0:46that was central uh for many different
- 0:49religions and we're speaking about the
- 0:51character that is known as Hermes Tris
- 0:54Majestice. He was a character that was
- 0:57central for the ancient Greek religion,
- 0:59ancient Roman religion, ancient Egyptian
- 1:02religion and also for Judaism,
- 1:04Christianity and Islam as we have
- 1:07demonstrated. We are going to go over
- 1:09tonight the third discourse of his in
- 1:14the Corpus Hermetica and that is the
- 1:17sacred sermon. That's the title that it
- 1:19was given.
- 1:22It's a short discourse but we have a lot
- 1:25of commentary actually on it tonight.
- 1:27And so it starts off by saying the glory
- 1:30of all things is God, Godhead and divine
- 1:34nature. God is the source of all that
- 1:39exists at once. Mind and nature. Yes,
- 1:44even matter. The wisdom that reveals all
- 1:47things. Godhead too is the source of
- 1:51nature, energy, necessity, the goal and
- 1:55the power of renewal. Boundless darkness
- 2:00lay in the abyss. and there was water
- 2:03and a subtle intelligent breath. By
- 2:06God's power, these were held in chaos.
- 2:10Then holy light arose and beneath the
- 2:14dry expanse, which literally translates
- 2:17as sand, the elements gathered from the
- 2:20moist essence, and all the gods drew out
- 2:24their proper portions from fertile
- 2:27nature. So this is the epitome of
- 2:31monotheism as we can see in the
- 2:33beginning of this sermon where Hermes is
- 2:36making it a point once again and as he
- 2:38did in the previous two discourses to
- 2:42emphasize the fact that there is this
- 2:45father this godhead that is the source
- 2:48of all creation and that nothing is like
- 2:52him and he cannot be described and we
- 2:54compared it previously to Imam Ahmed
- 2:57Hassan Alisam. times uh book of
- 2:59monotheism and his description of the
- 3:01Hoa or God before he manifested himself
- 3:04and made himself known as the divine
- 3:07essence. And then we get to the bottom
- 3:10of this first verse and we notice that
- 3:13it talks about these gods that are
- 3:16drawing out their proper portions from
- 3:18fertile nature. And these gods that it's
- 3:21referring to, it's talking about the
- 3:23seven planetary bodies as we
- 3:26demonstrated previously. And that those
- 3:28are what? The sun, the moon, Mercury,
- 3:32Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, which
- 3:37were essentially the planets or the
- 3:40planetary bodies that were visible and
- 3:43very well known to the ancient world.
- 3:46They are being described as gods and
- 3:49they are partaking in this scene in
- 3:52which Hermes is describing the beginning
- 3:54of creation.
- 3:58While all things were still undefined
- 4:01and unworked, the light things were set
- 4:04a loft, the heavy things grounded
- 4:07beneath the moist part of the dry
- 4:09expanse. The universal things were
- 4:12bounded by fire and suspended in breath
- 4:16to hold them up. Heaven appeared in
- 4:20seven circles. So now he's describing
- 4:22the creation of the seven heavens. He's
- 4:26saying that it was formed as seven. They
- 4:28were seven layers or seven circles or
- 4:32seven zones or seven orbits. Its gods
- 4:36were seen as stars with their signs. And
- 4:39so here we see very clearly that each
- 4:42one of these heavens, each one of these
- 4:44zones actually has a god over it or a
- 4:48king, a guardian, one of its rulers.
- 4:51Right? So you have a zone and here's an
- 4:54alchemical drawing here which
- 4:55demonstrates it perfectly. You have what
- 4:58first they said that the closest heaven
- 5:01or the first one the lowest one to the
- 5:03earth that zone was the moon zone.
- 5:07Then you have above it Mercury and then
- 5:10you have Venus. And they basically um
- 5:14they concluded this on the basis they
- 5:17saw which one would eclipse which and
- 5:20they were able to tell which one was
- 5:22closer. So uh Mercury for example does
- 5:25not eclipse the moon but it does eclipse
- 5:27the sun. So they found its location
- 5:29there. The fourth heaven is guard is
- 5:33basically controlled or or uh its
- 5:36guardian is the sun and then you have
- 5:38after that Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
- 5:44So heaven appeared in seven circles. Its
- 5:46gods were seen as stars with their signs
- 5:48and nature shaped her members in harmony
- 5:52with the gods within her. The outer rim
- 5:55of heaven revolved in its cycle carried
- 5:59by the breath of God. And so here you
- 6:03see God forming creation, bringing to
- 6:07life creatures, but also with the
- 6:10collaboration of these seven gods.
- 6:14Each God by his own proper power brought
- 6:19forth what was appointed to him. Thus
- 6:22came four-footed beasts, creeping
- 6:25things, the creatures of the waters, the
- 6:28winged things, and everything that bears
- 6:31seed, grass, and every flower shoot.
- 6:35Each having within itself the seed of
- 6:38becoming again. They set apart the
- 6:41births of men, some for the knowledge of
- 6:44God's works and for witness to nature's
- 6:47energy. the many for lordship over all
- 6:51beneath the sky and knowledge of its
- 6:53blessings so that they might increase
- 6:56and multiply and every soul embodied by
- 6:59the revolution of the cyclic gods for
- 7:02beholding the marvels of heaven and the
- 7:05courses of heaven's gods and for the
- 7:08works of God and the power of nature for
- 7:11signs of its blessings for knowledge of
- 7:14God's power so they might know the fates
- 7:17that follow good and evil and learn the
- 7:19skilled work of all good arts.
- 7:23There's a lot that's packed into this. A
- 7:26lot. And essentially what Hermes is
- 7:29saying is that there are all types of
- 7:32creatures.
- 7:33The creatures were imbued with
- 7:37particular properties from the different
- 7:40planets and stars that were ruling these
- 7:44seven heavens. Depending on which one of
- 7:47these planetary bodies influenced the
- 7:50creature more, it became in that way,
- 7:54that shape, that form or had that
- 7:56temperament. But unlike the creatures
- 8:00that were in the sea or those that flew
- 8:02in the air or those that creepeth on the
- 8:05land, there was a special creature that
- 8:08was made and that was man. They set
- 8:11apart the birth of men. He was a special
- 8:14one. They created them in a special way
- 8:18other than the way that they created the
- 8:20rest. And the reason was is because man,
- 8:24some of them were made for knowledge of
- 8:28God's work and for witness to nature's
- 8:31energy. Some of them were imbued with
- 8:36properties, powers, abilities from these
- 8:39planetary bodies that they could reflect
- 8:42over God's secrets that they may wonder
- 8:46into the heavens, marvel over the
- 8:49courses of the heavens bodies and
- 8:51actually be able to know God's power and
- 8:56read the fates of man, be able to tell
- 8:59the future. This was God's intention
- 9:02when he created. He created man in order
- 9:06that his intellect grows so much so that
- 9:09he has complete awareness, control,
- 9:12consciousness over what is to take
- 9:14place. He was supposed to read his
- 9:16existence and the course of human
- 9:20history, right? Knowing fully what will
- 9:23happen by reading it into the stars.
- 9:27And here we have an amazing alchemical
- 9:30drawing of each and every one of the
- 9:33planetary bodies influencing or
- 9:36partaking in the creation of man by
- 9:39casting light upon it.
- 9:44Thus their living begins and their
- 9:46growing wise according to the fate
- 9:49appointed by the revolutions of the
- 9:51cyclic gods and their dying to this same
- 9:54end. And so fate, how much money they
- 9:58were going to make during their life,
- 10:00how much courage they would have, how
- 10:03how many children they would have, how
- 10:05long of a lifespan they would have, how
- 10:08bright or attractive their personality
- 10:10would be, how many wives would they be
- 10:13or how many sexual partners would they
- 10:15have. All of that was determined by the
- 10:19planetary bodies. And that's why they
- 10:21were known as written previously in
- 10:24Hermes writings as fate. They're known
- 10:26collectively as fate. Mighty memorials
- 10:29of their handiwork will lie upon the
- 10:32earth, though fading when the cycles
- 10:34renew. For every embodied birth, every
- 10:38seeded fruit, and every handiwork,
- 10:41though it decay, must of necessity renew
- 10:44itself by the God's renewing power and
- 10:48by the turning of nature's rhythmic
- 10:49wheel. For while Godhead is nature's
- 10:53ever renewing of the cosmic mixture,
- 10:56nature herself stands co-established
- 10:59within that godhead.
- 11:01So to give you an explanation that or
- 11:05give you an example that might help you
- 11:08understand how the ancients viewed the
- 11:12imprint of the planets upon mankind. It
- 11:14was they saw it very much in the same
- 11:16way as we see DNA today. So, you have
- 11:20DNA and DNA gives you special qualities,
- 11:23certain traits. Um, it gives you maybe
- 11:26you're a good basketball player, more
- 11:28prone to be athletic, right? You're
- 11:31taller. Um, or you're stronger or you're
- 11:35wiser or your eyesight is better. These
- 11:38things are given to you before you're
- 11:41created in your DNA. They saw the
- 11:44planets as having the same type of
- 11:46effect on us in our life.
- 11:51So that's the end of the sacred sermon.
- 11:54Now, what does the Quran say about the
- 11:56heavenly bodies?
- 11:59Here are some Arabic verses from the
- 12:02Quran.
- 12:04And here's the translation for it. One
- 12:06verse says, "He is the one who made the
- 12:09stars for you so that you may be guided
- 12:12by them amidst to the darknesses of land
- 12:15and sea."
- 12:17So in the apparent maybe you look at it
- 12:19you're like okay when I'm sailing on the
- 12:20ship God's telling me look up at the
- 12:22stars and you'll know where you're at.
- 12:24Or you could see kind of a deeper
- 12:26parallel there. The same type of
- 12:28parallel that was mentioned in the
- 12:31corpus hermeticum in the sermon where
- 12:35God had intended that man marvel after
- 12:39beholding at the heavens and be able to
- 12:41extract from there information.
- 12:45And he placed way marks and by the star
- 12:49they are guided. Another verse. So no, I
- 12:53swear. God is swearing and when he
- 12:55swears that's a great thing and that
- 12:58which he swears by is also a great
- 13:00thing. I swear by the positions of the
- 13:03stars and indeed it is surely a
- 13:07tremendous oath. If only you knew.
- 13:11Another verse of the Quran is speaking
- 13:12about Abraham.
- 13:14He cast a glance at the stars and said,
- 13:17"I am ill." And this is one of the most
- 13:20fascinating verses pertaining to stars
- 13:23in the Quran. Because we can clearly see
- 13:26Abraham looking at the stars and being
- 13:29able to tell his condition by looking at
- 13:32the stars. He was able to tell that he
- 13:34is ill or he's going to become ill. He
- 13:37saw something in the stars that was not
- 13:39to his fortune.
- 13:41Indeed, we have adorned the lowest
- 13:44heaven with an adornment, the stars, and
- 13:47as a guard against every rebellious
- 13:49devil. They cannot easedrop on the
- 13:52highest assembly. They are pelted from
- 13:54every side, driven away, and for them is
- 13:58a relentless punishment except one who
- 14:00snatches a fragment and then a piercing
- 14:03flame pursues him. So, obviously,
- 14:05there's all types of things that are
- 14:06going on in the heavens. Here you see a
- 14:10verse in which literally God is saying
- 14:13that the fortunes are existing in the
- 14:16heaven and in the stars and that the
- 14:18devils or the jin are traveling up in
- 14:21order that they may steal information
- 14:24about the future. And this is something
- 14:26that all Muslims agree upon.
- 14:29Astrology and the prophets. What about
- 14:32the narrations? What did Muhammad and
- 14:34the family of Muhammad Ali wasam
- 14:38state about the prophets and the
- 14:39messengers?
- 14:42Islamic history books and Quranic
- 14:44interpretation books repeatedly, man,
- 14:46you can look these up yourselves.
- 14:48There's so many that I'm not going to
- 14:49list every single hadith. Islamic
- 14:51history books and Quranic interpretation
- 14:53books repeatedly state that God taught
- 14:56Adam knowledge of many things including
- 15:00knowledge of the stars and medicine.
- 15:04Islamic history books and Quranic
- 15:06interpretation books repeatedly identify
- 15:09Idris as Hermes, a primordial sage. He
- 15:14was called Adris because it comes from
- 15:16Dasa, right? because of his many studies
- 15:19because deris means study. He was the
- 15:23first to write with a pen, the first to
- 15:25sew garments, and the first to examine
- 15:28the science of the stars and
- 15:30calculation. This is literally written
- 15:32in there in so many books. Whether
- 15:34you're talking about the history of the
- 15:36prophets and messengers written by Sunni
- 15:38scholars or Shia scholars,
- 15:42Islamic history books and Quranic
- 15:44interpretation books contain stories
- 15:46that Abraham's father Azar, an
- 15:50astrologer of Nimrod, actually foresaw
- 15:53by the stars the birth of a child who
- 15:56would end their religion and the rule of
- 15:58Nimrod. They also contain narrations of
- 16:01Abraham looking into the stars to find
- 16:03out that he was sick or other narrations
- 16:06where he's observing Venus, the moon and
- 16:09the sun and declaring that he does not
- 16:11love those that set meaning he doesn't
- 16:14worship those without Allah subhana
- 16:17tala.
- 16:20Islamic history books and Quranic
- 16:21interpretation books contain stories
- 16:24also that pharaoh lanali
- 16:28had a dream and the astrologers
- 16:31interpret it interpret the dream by
- 16:34looking into the stars and stated that a
- 16:36boy would be born meaning Moses amongst
- 16:39the Israelites who would end his rule
- 16:42which led to the killing of male
- 16:44infants. So what we're seeing here is
- 16:47that we're seeing that the history of
- 16:50Judaism, Christianity, and Islam is
- 16:52affirming that this science existed and
- 16:54it existed from the very beginning of
- 16:56mankind and that the believers and the
- 16:59non-believers alike relied on it. And
- 17:02the hadiths are not saying that it was
- 17:04false information. Rather, you see
- 17:06clearly that it was true information.
- 17:09and Pharaoh really did have a dream and
- 17:11the interpretation was correct and that
- 17:14there was going to be a savior that was
- 17:16born.
- 17:18Islamic history books contain stories
- 17:20that a queen once went to war against
- 17:22Joshua the son of noon and only sent to
- 17:26battle soldiers whom she knew their time
- 17:28of death hadn't come by relying on the
- 17:31astrologers. And this is in reference to
- 17:33this narration where Joshua is an enemy
- 17:36and this woman, she she has a lot of
- 17:38astrologers with her. She's a queen. She
- 17:40wants to fight him. He's fighting
- 17:42against them. He's losing soldiers.
- 17:44Nobody ever dies from her army. So he's
- 17:46like, "What is going on here?" So he
- 17:49seeks the guidance of Allah subhana wa
- 17:51tala who reveals to him that this woman,
- 17:54she's looking in the stars and she's
- 17:56seeing all of the people that their
- 17:58death is approaching. she keeps them
- 18:00behind and she sends the people that she
- 18:02knows has extended lifespans. Right? So
- 18:05that's how she was kind of giving off
- 18:08this impression that she has this
- 18:10flawless infallible army with immortal
- 18:12men. Hence Joshua prayed to God to
- 18:16freeze the rise of the sun or return it
- 18:19in order to confuse her calculations. So
- 18:22that's how this story is explained.
- 18:28Jewish narration books also contain
- 18:30stories that Sulman Alisam requested
- 18:34from Pharaoh, his neighbor, helpers to
- 18:37help him build the temple. And that
- 18:39Pharaoh didn't like him. He had envy
- 18:42against him. He attempted to trick or
- 18:44deceive Solomon by sending him workers
- 18:47whose time of death had approached. He
- 18:50knew this by looking into the stars. So,
- 18:51it's a similar story, right? Where he
- 18:54wants to build the temple of Solomon. He
- 18:56asks neighbors to help him send over
- 18:58workers. Pharaoh's like, "Yeah, you can
- 19:00take these people. Once they would
- 19:01arrive in Israel, they would all fall
- 19:03dead." You know, so it would be like an
- 19:05act of disrespect. How did Pharaoh know
- 19:08this? By the stars.
- 19:11The Bible, Islamic history books, and
- 19:14Quranic interpretation books contain
- 19:16stories that wise men, astrologers,
- 19:20followed a rising star to Jesus's
- 19:24birthplace. and they brought forward
- 19:26gold, mr, frankincense and each of them
- 19:29is explained symbolically.
- 19:32Islamic history books and Quranic
- 19:34interpretation books also contain
- 19:36stories that Heraclus
- 19:38and others discern signs of Muhammad's
- 19:41mission. They found out that Muhammad
- 19:42was born, that he's coming to accomplish
- 19:45great things. There are accounts of
- 19:48Husro, the king of Persia, witnessing
- 19:50prodigies, a palace arch cracking, a
- 19:53canal breached, and then he sought to to
- 19:55find out what the meanings of these
- 19:58events were. He consults his astrologers
- 20:00and the cast astrologers look in the
- 20:02stars and they find out that Muhammad
- 20:04was born.
- 20:07Islamic history books contain stories
- 20:09that a skilled Jewish astrologer
- 20:12calculated a birth and concluded it
- 20:15could only belong to a prophet or a
- 20:18prophet's vice chair ruling the whole
- 20:20world. And this was taken as a sign of
- 20:23the birth of the awaited 12th Imm.
- 20:28[snorts]
- 20:31[sighs and gasps]
- 20:34[clears throat]
- 20:36[sighs]
- 20:38>> So it's impossible. It's impossible that
- 20:40this be a coincidence that all of these
- 20:42stories from Adam all the way down to
- 20:45the 12th imam are speaking repeatedly of
- 20:48these people relying on this science and
- 20:51it being accurate. So what is the origin
- 20:54of astrology
- 20:56and best may Allahh be pleased with him
- 21:01said it is a knowledge from the sciences
- 21:03of prophethood and then he regretted not
- 21:06having mastered it. He says, "If only I
- 21:08had mastered it."
- 21:12A another narration uh states, "Beware
- 21:15of rejecting the knowledge of the stars
- 21:18for it is among the sciences of
- 21:21prophethood."
- 21:23What does the say about astrology?
- 21:27Abu Abdullah Imam Sodam said he was once
- 21:30asked about the stars and he replied no
- 21:34one knows this science no one knows
- 21:37about the stars except for two
- 21:39households a household from the Arabs
- 21:42and a household from the Indians and in
- 21:46another narration it's said that the
- 21:48household from India are actually
- 21:51descendants they were the bait of the
- 21:54vice gerant of Idris Abu
- 22:00Abdaham
- 22:01in another narration says in the sky
- 22:03there are four stars. None knows them
- 22:06except a household from amongst the
- 22:08Arabs and a household from amongst the
- 22:10Indians know one star of them and for
- 22:13that reason their calculations stand. So
- 22:16obviously we get from this tradition
- 22:17that the knowledge that the household
- 22:20from the Arabs have is superior to the
- 22:23knowledge that the Indians have.
- 22:26The messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi
- 22:28wasall said when the star rises every
- 22:32departs. So in classical usage here the
- 22:36star is commonly understood as the
- 22:37plates and the aa means an affliction
- 22:41which affects crops.
- 22:44So when the plates rises the crop
- 22:47diseases or afflictions are lifted.
- 22:53In another narration, a companion says
- 22:56that he said to imam,
- 22:59"People say that looking into the stars
- 23:01is not permissible." And this is
- 23:03important because there's a lot of
- 23:04people, especially Sunnis that say that
- 23:07this whole astrology business, this is
- 23:09haram. This is actually divination and
- 23:11this is totally shik and not acceptable.
- 23:15Somebody poses this question to Imam
- 23:17Saddic and he said the man says people
- 23:19say that looking into the stars is not
- 23:21permissible yet I find it pleasing. I'm
- 23:23drawn towards it. My soul wants it. If
- 23:27it harms my religion though then I have
- 23:29no need for anything that harms my
- 23:31religion. But if it does not harm my
- 23:33religion by Allah subhana wa ta'ala I
- 23:36long for it and for looking into it. He
- 23:40said it is not as they say it does not
- 23:44harm your religion. Then he added you
- 23:46people though meaning your your family
- 23:49only look at some of it. Its much cannot
- 23:51be fully grasped and its little brings
- 23:53no benefit.
- 23:56In another narration of Imam Alisam,
- 24:00somebody else had written him a letter
- 24:04and he wrote to him, "Our father and our
- 24:07grandfather used to practice the arts of
- 24:10observing, studying the stars. It is it
- 24:13permissible to study them?" He said,
- 24:16"Yes."
- 24:18In the same source, they wrote to him
- 24:21again and they said, "We are the
- 24:22descendants of Benny Nakt, the
- 24:26astrologer family." We already wrote to
- 24:28you asking if it is permissible to study
- 24:30the science of the stars and you wrote
- 24:32back yes. But astrologers differ about
- 24:36the description structure of the
- 24:38heavens.
- 24:40So he I imam wrote back and said yes as
- 24:43long as one does not depart from.
- 24:47And that's an interesting answer because
- 24:49that is the message that in the hermetic
- 24:52writings is being repeated over and over
- 24:55and over again. Study them. They are
- 24:57gods. They have abilities to determine
- 25:00outcomes of things. They have
- 25:02co-created. They've done this and this
- 25:03and this and this. But they are not the
- 25:06ultimate god. Another one of the
- 25:08companions uh says he said Abu Abdaham
- 25:13said to me once how is your skill in in
- 25:16regards to the stars. The companion
- 25:19Hashem said I have left no one in Iraq
- 25:23more knowledgeable of the stars than I.
- 25:27He said how do you describe the turning
- 25:29of the celestial sphere amongst you?
- 25:32until he said, "The basis of calculation
- 25:35is true, but none knows it except one
- 25:38who knows the births of all creatures."
- 25:41Meaning the origin, the the the the
- 25:44astrology that we have today, it's been
- 25:47changed a little bit. It's been
- 25:48polluted. It's been lost. And some of
- 25:51the narrations attribute this loss to
- 25:53the events that took place with Minisam
- 25:57and also with Joshua the son of Nune
- 25:59when the son was returned. So they lost
- 26:02some of this but it can be gained if you
- 26:04know the births of all creatures.
- 26:07Another one of the companions says I
- 26:10asked Abu Abdisam about the stars are
- 26:14their judgments true he said yes. So
- 26:17imagine that narration he's essentially
- 26:20saying that he asks Imam when I look at
- 26:24the stars and the stars predict that
- 26:28somebody's going to die that somebody's
- 26:30going to be wealthy that somebody's
- 26:32going to be successful that somebody's
- 26:34going to have bad events that happen in
- 26:36his life are these things to be believed
- 26:39and I imam says yes
- 26:44[snorts]
- 26:45in this narration And it's related that
- 26:47Harun Rasheed sent for Musa Jaffer
- 26:51Alisam and had him brought. When he
- 26:54arrived, Harun said to him, "People
- 26:56attribute to you, oh sons of Fatima,
- 27:00knowledge of the stars and your mastery
- 27:02of it is said to be excellent." So the
- 27:05people in the in those times they knew
- 27:07that Muhammad and the family of Muhammad
- 27:09were masters of astrology. Yet the
- 27:13jurists, the
- 27:15the of the majority meaning say that the
- 27:20messenger of God said
- 27:23when my companions are mentioned keep
- 27:25silent. This is one of those fake
- 27:28hadiths where says the prophet saying
- 27:30that anybody who talks about about my
- 27:32companions don't if they even mention
- 27:34their name stay silent and when the
- 27:36stars are mentioned stay silent.
- 27:39Meanwhile, the commander of the faithful
- 27:42was the most knowledgeable of creation
- 27:45in the science of the stars and his
- 27:47sons.
- 27:50Ali Alisam
- 27:51said, "Whoever takes up some knowledge
- 27:54about the sciences of the stars from
- 27:57amongst the bearers of the Quran, it
- 28:00increases them in faith and certitude,
- 28:05certainty, ya." Then he recited indeed
- 28:09in the alternation of night and day and
- 28:11in what Allah has created in the heavens
- 28:13and the earth are signs for a people who
- 28:16are god-fearing.
- 28:19Soam
- 28:21are saying that the more that you delve
- 28:22into this knowledge about the stars
- 28:25about the planetary bodies and their
- 28:26effect on humanity and society the more
- 28:30that you will actually have y in your
- 28:33religion. [applause]
- 28:42So one of the companions his name was
- 28:44Ununice he says I said to Abdisam may I
- 28:47be your ransom tell me about the science
- 28:50of the stars. What is it? He said it is
- 28:53a knowledge from amongst the sciences of
- 28:56the prophets. I said did aliam
- 28:59know it? He said he was the most
- 29:01knowledgeable of all people in it.
- 29:06There's a Quranic verse that says, "And
- 29:07thus we showed Abraham the dominion, the
- 29:10melakut of the heavens and the earth so
- 29:12that he might be of those with
- 29:15certainty." Abu Jafir Alisam said
- 29:18regarding that meaning concerning this
- 29:20verse, the seven heavens were unveiled
- 29:23for him until he looked upon the seventh
- 29:26heaven and what is in it and the seven
- 29:28earths until he looked upon them and
- 29:31what is in them. The same was done for
- 29:34Muhammad sallallahu alaihi as was done
- 29:36for Abraham.
- 29:39And I indeed see that your companion,
- 29:42the Imam, had the like done for him and
- 29:45the imams after him likewise.
- 29:49Now here's here's an interesting
- 29:51narration.
- 29:53Abu Abdaham
- 29:55says, "Whoever sets out on a journey or
- 29:59marries," so this is different than all
- 30:00these other narrations. All these other
- 30:02narrations are establishing that
- 30:04Muhammad and the family Muhammad are
- 30:06master astrologers and that this science
- 30:09is actually descendant from the prophets
- 30:11and that it's not haram. This narration
- 30:14Imam is actually telling he's
- 30:17instructing the Shia to look into the
- 30:20stars see if this is taking place in the
- 30:23heavens and if it is basically base your
- 30:26behavior base your plans around that.
- 30:29Whoever sets out on a journey or marries
- 30:33when the moon is in Scorpio will not see
- 30:36a good outcome.
- 30:38And uh in another narration is clarified
- 30:42that basically if the moon is in Scorpio
- 30:44and a person gets married then they will
- 30:47have a miscarriage. So this is
- 30:49associated with that insi
- 30:53a
- 30:55Quranic interpretation book that relies
- 30:58heavily upon the narrations of Muhammad
- 31:01and the family of Muhammad in regards to
- 31:03the meanings of the verses. It was said
- 31:05uh as for the people of [clears throat]
- 31:08they were destroyed by a howling furious
- 31:11wind. El Ki says it was a cold and
- 31:15overbearing wind. He also said it went
- 31:18forth beyond what it had been commanded.
- 31:22He said it over them. God subjected it
- 31:25to them by his power for seven nights
- 31:29and 8 days consecutively.
- 31:32El Ki said the moon was illomen by
- 31:36Saturn for seven nights and 8 days until
- 31:40they perished. And he is referring
- 31:45actually if you look at the the picture
- 31:47here um on the on the right hand side
- 31:51and you read verse 19 it says verily we
- 31:55have sent against them a horrible wind
- 32:00in a day that is unlucky that is
- 32:03continuously unlucky or continuously NAS
- 32:07and we know that this word NAS is always
- 32:09used by the astrologers when they're
- 32:11talking about a bad omen or a bad
- 32:14constellation or a bad conjunction of
- 32:18the planetary bodies in the heavens. So
- 32:21I say it has already been mentioned in
- 32:23surah that the first of the eight and
- 32:26their last were on Wednesday and that it
- 32:28was a persistent ill omen.
- 32:32So you see the people within them fallen
- 32:34dead struck down as if they were hollow
- 32:37rotted trunks of palm trees mere stumps.
- 32:41So essentially what he's saying is he's
- 32:44saying that the reason why this
- 32:47punishment came down, God sent the
- 32:49punishment upon them, yes, but he did it
- 32:52by using the planetary bodies that the
- 32:56planetary bodies partnered with God in
- 33:00this punishment. Actually, they went a
- 33:03little bit above and beyond with the
- 33:05punishment more than what God even asked
- 33:08for. And so they are collaborating with
- 33:11God and they're responsible for
- 33:14misfortunes taking place on earth.
- 33:19So what about the connection between the
- 33:21seven gods and the
- 33:24is there one?
- 33:27In the hermetic writings the seven gods
- 33:30are the planetary rulers Saturn,
- 33:33Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and
- 33:36the moon. They are subordinate powers
- 33:40set beneath the one the good God the
- 33:43father. They are called rulers and fate
- 33:48not creators from nothing but co-causes
- 33:52who bring forth what is appointed. So
- 33:54God decrees something. He uses them as
- 33:58his hands, as his uh carriers or
- 34:01implementers of his will
- 34:04by separating and stamping forms within
- 34:07fertile nature through their circulating
- 34:10powers. The subliminary world is
- 34:13generated, ordered, and timed. Because
- 34:17they govern birth, mixture, and destiny.
- 34:21They also stand over the soul's
- 34:24condition after death. The soul ascends
- 34:27through seven spheres where each power
- 34:31tests and strips off its corresponding
- 34:34passions, and we went over this in the
- 34:35previous lectures, and influences. In
- 34:38this sense, the planetary gods act as
- 34:41cosmic administrators and assessors,
- 34:45cocreating by delegation during life and
- 34:49judging the soul's attachments to the
- 34:51dunya after death, yet always under and
- 34:55within the will of the transcendent
- 34:58father.
- 35:00What about theam
- 35:02in Shia Islamic theology especially in
- 35:0612 teachings and later theological
- 35:09mystical writings theam
- 35:12are co-creators just like the planetary
- 35:15bodies were the are co-creators by the
- 35:19permission of Allah as Jesus was and the
- 35:23divinelyapp appointed witnesses they are
- 35:25divinelyappointed witnesses and
- 35:27mediators through whom God's command and
- 35:30in mercy reaches creation. Described as
- 35:34ha, God's proof, they possess wlea
- 35:37tuina, the authority to administer
- 35:40affairs by God's permission. So
- 35:43guidance, protection, sustenance, and
- 35:46even cosmic order are said to flow
- 35:49through them without compromising
- 35:51tohheed. In life, they cooperate in
- 35:55God's governance by teaching the law,
- 35:58unveiling wisdom, rectifying souls,
- 36:00bringing down sustenance after death.
- 36:03They are linked to the soul's passage.
- 36:06And they are bearers of chafa, such that
- 36:09a person's allegiance and likeness to
- 36:12them determines what is shed or kept
- 36:15from the soul. Thus all of the planetary
- 36:18powers function as delegated
- 36:22administrators in hermetic thought
- 36:27are portrayed as God's appointed
- 36:29administrators of guidance and mercy
- 36:32testing refining and aiding souls always
- 36:36under and within God's will. Essentially
- 36:39what like the description of these seven
- 36:41planets is identical to the description
- 36:45of theam. You could really just take the
- 36:48word go over here plug it in where the
- 36:51planets are. You go over here you plug
- 36:54the names of the planets in place of the
- 36:56description of the it would still make
- 36:59the same meaning. It would make total
- 37:01sense.
- 37:03Immad Alisam says God created the will
- 37:07by itself then he created things through
- 37:10the will. Remember remember the the the
- 37:14the map that we had the mind map that we
- 37:16had yesterday or the day before on the
- 37:18lecture uh we said that the father
- 37:21emanated right as Allah subhana wa
- 37:24ta'ala and Allah had a will right
- 37:27>> here this mashia Imam is saying god
- 37:30created the will by itself then he
- 37:33created things through the will.
- 37:37All right. Well, who is this will? What
- 37:39is this will? Imm Abu Hassan Alisam said
- 37:43to me, "Oh, Ununice, do you know what is
- 37:45the will? What is this Msiah?" Okay. So,
- 37:47we're getting we're going to know
- 37:49exactly what it is from the words of the
- 37:51You don't have to take any words from
- 37:52me. We're just going to go purely off of
- 37:55the evidence. Do you know what the Msiah
- 37:57is? I said, "No." He said, "It is the
- 38:00first remembrance, the first zik."
- 38:04Okay. What's this first zik from Abu
- 38:08Abdah Imam regarding God's saying so ask
- 38:11the people of the reminder or a zik if
- 38:14you do not know he says the is Muhammad
- 38:18sallallahu alaihi
- 38:30>> and we are its people and we are the
- 38:33ones to be asked Im
- 38:36Bakar Alisam said the reckoning of the
- 38:39people is handed over to us. So now
- 38:42we've established without a shadow of a
- 38:44doubt that the
- 38:47are the creators just like the planetary
- 38:49bodies are in the hermetic the are
- 38:53creators of this world and imbakam said
- 38:57the reckoning or the judgment of the
- 38:59people is handed over to us by God.
- 39:02We're the ones that admit people into
- 39:04heaven and we admit the people of hell
- 39:07into hell.
- 39:09The commander of the faithful said, "Man
- 39:11was created with a rational speaking
- 39:14soul. If he purifies it through
- 39:16knowledge and action, it c it comes to
- 39:20resemble the essences of its first
- 39:22causes. And when its temperament is
- 39:25balanced and it departs from opposing
- 39:28qualities, he becomes a partner to the
- 39:31seven mighty or pulling ones.
- 39:36What's he talking about? What's the
- 39:37seven mighty ones? The seven ones that
- 39:39are magnetic that pull. Who are these?
- 39:41It's the seven planetary bodies. So when
- 39:45a man perfects himself, purifies his
- 39:48soul, what does he unite with? He unites
- 39:51with these seven gods. In another
- 39:56narration, Abu Hassan Alisam said about
- 39:58the verse and indeed we have given you
- 40:00the seven of repeated and the
- 40:03magnificent Quran. None of the prophets
- 40:06was given this except for Muhammad
- 40:08sallallahu alaihi. The seven often
- 40:11repeated, the Sabathani, the seven mathi
- 40:15are the seven imams around whom the
- 40:18celestial sphere revolves. And the
- 40:22magnificent Quran is Muhammad sallallahu
- 40:24alaihi wasall.
- 40:26>> Are you ready for more?
- 40:30>> The messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi
- 40:32wasall said this is a magnificent
- 40:33hadith. This is really a magnificent
- 40:36hadith.
- 40:48The messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi
- 40:50wasall said follow the sun and when the
- 40:52sun sets follow the moon and when the
- 40:54moon sets follow Venus and when Venus
- 40:57sets follow the two farad stars they
- 41:00said oh messenger of Allah who are the
- 41:02sun the moon Venus and the two farad
- 41:04stars he said I'm the
- 41:07Ali is the moon. Fimatu Ali is Venus and
- 41:13the two stars are Al Hassan and Al
- 41:16Hussein.
- 41:19>> [applause]
- 41:26[applause]
- 41:30>> We we we spoke about we spoke about one
- 41:33of the previous episodes about and we
- 41:35promised that we were going to reveal
- 41:36the hidden meaning behind the statues
- 41:40that we have in here of Venus. And the
- 41:42Arabic name of Venus is Azah.
- 41:46And the nickname of Fatima is Fatima
- 41:49Zahisam.
- 41:51Isn't that incredible?
- 41:56>> Now this is the story of a Yemen who
- 41:58entered upon Imam Alisam. The Imam
- 42:01called him by his name which no one
- 42:03knew. It was sad. He said to him, "Oh
- 42:06Sad, what is your craft?" He said, "I am
- 42:09from a household that studies the
- 42:11stars." until the imam said, "What is
- 42:14the name of the star which when it rises
- 42:18agitates the camels?" Now, if we just
- 42:22stop right there, that's enough to tell
- 42:23us that the stars are actually by the
- 42:27admission of Imam Sodam playing a role
- 42:31in the mood of a particular animal, the
- 42:34mood of the camels, and that there's a
- 42:36star that's responsible to make them
- 42:38howl. He said, "I don't know." He said,
- 42:41"You have spoken the truth." He said,
- 42:43"Okay, well, what is the name of the
- 42:45star which when it rises agitates the
- 42:49cattle?"
- 42:50He said, "I don't know." He said,
- 42:51"You've spoken the truth." He said,
- 42:54"What is the name of the star which when
- 42:56it rises agitates the dogs?" He said, "I
- 43:01don't know." He said, "You've spoken the
- 43:03truth in saying, I don't know." Then he
- 43:05said, "What is Zahal Saturn with you
- 43:08amongst the stars?" He said, "It's an
- 43:12inospicious star." Abu Abdaham said, "Do
- 43:15not say that. It is the star of the
- 43:18commander of the faithful Amir Minisam
- 43:21and the star of his vice gren. It is the
- 43:23piercing star which god most high
- 43:26mentioned in his book." And so sad
- 43:30thought that Saturn was an unlucky star.
- 43:32It's a bad sign when it appears in the
- 43:34in the sky. And Saturn is the ruler of
- 43:37the seventh heaven. The seventh heaven
- 43:39is the heaven which has the siddra tree
- 43:42that Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasalls
- 43:44to before he reaches Allah subhana wa
- 43:47ta'ala. It's at the edge of it. Here
- 43:50we're we're seeing that that basically
- 43:54essentially I imam is saying that
- 44:00is the ruler of the seventh heaven. The
- 44:03seventh heaven that is at the very end
- 44:06of those seven heavens that we said all
- 44:08collectively exist within the uh throne.
- 44:14Imam was asked about the stars. Is the
- 44:18knowledge of them true? He replied,
- 44:20"Yes, indeed. God sent Jupiter to the
- 44:24earth in the form of a man." He took a
- 44:28man from the non-Arabs and taught him
- 44:31the science of the stars until the man
- 44:34thought he had mastered it. Then he said
- 44:37to him, "Look, where is Jupiter?" So,
- 44:40here's a man.
- 44:42Jupiter appears to him in the form of a
- 44:44man. He's a non-Arab. Jupiter appears to
- 44:47him. Jupiter teaches this non-Arab all
- 44:51the sciences of the stars until he
- 44:54thinks that he mastered it. Then he said
- 44:55to him, "Look, where is Jupiter?" He
- 44:57said, "I do not see it in the celestial
- 44:59sphere, nor do I know where it is. My
- 45:03calculations are saying it's supposed to
- 45:05be there, but I'm not seeing it." So he
- 45:08set him aside and took the hand of a man
- 45:10from India and taught him until he
- 45:12thought he had mastered it. then said
- 45:15look where is Jupiter? He said my
- 45:17calculation indicates that you are
- 45:19Jupiter. He gasped and died and his
- 45:23family inherited his knowledge. So the
- 45:26knowledge is there amongst them. And in
- 45:29this particular narration, we see that
- 45:32Muhammad and the family of Muhammad Ali
- 45:34are saying that these seven gods that
- 45:36abide in the heavens that these gods
- 45:39that parttook in creation that they also
- 45:42have the ability to manifest on earth in
- 45:46human form
- 45:48just like that.
- 45:51And so we're going to stop there, but
- 45:53inshallah in the future lectures we're
- 45:55going to talk about how the planetary
- 45:58bodies
- 46:00um eventually came to be worshiped and
- 46:02how the people made statues of them and
- 46:06actually how Hermes in his discourses
- 46:09talked about how the Egyptians had
- 46:14perfected a method whereby through
- 46:17particular rituals they were able to
- 46:21insole a spirit in a statue. And they
- 46:25would harness the statue and use it to
- 46:29be able to tell them information about
- 46:32the future and the fortunes uh of
- 46:35mankind and how at some particular point
- 46:37in Egyptian history, those spirits that
- 46:40embodied those statues left those
- 46:43statues and the people forgot about it.
- 46:45Anyway, I'll stop there not to confuse
- 46:46you guys. God bless you and
