- 0:00It's been failing since I got it. I've
- 0:02been a failing business owner. And like
- 0:03that's fine. Every business that I ever
- 0:05[music] did, I always lost money in the
- 0:07beginning. And it's like everything I
- 0:08ever did in my life, I sucked at. Real
- 0:10estate. It was like 3 months of not
- 0:12closing a deal. And then finally it
- 0:14worked out. Everyone that's watching
- 0:16this, like everyone in [music] your life
- 0:17has one misunderstanding about you.
- 0:19There's so many things people think they
- 0:20know about you, but they don't. I want
- 0:22people to try. [music] Like it's like it
- 0:24this is hell. I hate it. I want to get
- 0:26out, but we have to try because whether
- 0:29I'm doing this or whether I'm [music]
- 0:30not trying this, things are hell. I feel
- 0:32like even if I don't have a business to
- 0:33work on, like if there's nothing going
- 0:34on in my life, then I always invent
- 0:36problems. And it's like I'd rather have
- 0:37real world problems and [music] maybe a
- 0:392% chance of getting better than to just
- 0:43not try and just feel like, oh, what if?
- 0:47Can I ask you when you were going to
- 0:49quit? What what made you decide to keep
- 0:51going? And then how are you different
- 0:53from the person that started in the
- 0:55beginning?
- 0:58>> Yeah, good question. So, um,
- 1:03hey, what's up? It's Jordan with the
- 1:05LaMat Resource Podcast. I actually don't
- 1:08know what show this is, but I'm pumped
- 1:10you're here today because today we have
- 1:12a CDF Wong on the show and this is an
- 1:14incredible episode. You're going to
- 1:16learn about somebody who just started
- 1:18doing this thing and is taking something
- 1:20that was a broken business and is in
- 1:24process right now of turning her
- 1:26business around. I found her actually we
- 1:28connected on social media. I saw her
- 1:31accounts over there and uh I am psyched
- 1:34for you to meet her. She is great and
- 1:36you're going to get a lot out of what
- 1:38she's learning about jumping in the deep
- 1:40end right from the beginning. I know
- 1:41that's a lot of your guys' fear is
- 1:43getting into this business. uh and
- 1:46hitting problems right away. And she
- 1:48that's what she's doing. So, uh you're
- 1:51going to learn a lot out of this one.
- 1:53Big takeaway here. Um so, make sure you
- 1:56uh check it out, man, cuz you're going
- 1:58to love her.
- 1:59>> Cia, welcome to the show. Thank you so
- 2:02much for coming on. How you doing?
- 2:03>> I'm good.
- 2:05>> I am excited. I gotta I gotta just te
- 2:07tell you this because the reason we
- 2:10found you is we found your uh I think
- 2:13your YouTube channel maybe or maybe
- 2:15Instagram, I forget, but one of them
- 2:18>> and actually my admin saw it and was
- 2:19like, "You got to see this girl." And I
- 2:21was like, "Oh, that's cool." She's like,
- 2:22"I'm going to reach out to see if she'll
- 2:23come on the podcast." I like, "Oh,
- 2:24that'd be awesome." And she did and you
- 2:26were like on top of it and uh here you
- 2:29are right now. I'm super excited.
- 2:32>> Super excited.
- 2:33>> Happy new year.
- 2:34>> Yeah. real quick, just because we're
- 2:36right on the front here. Uh, and
- 2:39can you just tell people what your what
- 2:41your channels are called or how to find
- 2:43them?
- 2:44>> Yeah.
- 2:45>> Um, my YouTube is just Clean and Comfy
- 2:47Laundry and then we're on Tik Tok and
- 2:48Instagram, Clean and Comfy Laundry or
- 2:50the Clean and Comfy Laundry.
- 2:52>> Yeah. And I'll we'll have links to all
- 2:54those in the show notes or if you're on
- 2:55YouTube, it'll be in the description
- 2:56down below. go make sure you go over
- 2:58there and subh subscribe and and support
- 3:02uh CD over there, which I think uh
- 3:05you're just going to want to after you
- 3:06kind of get to know her a little bit
- 3:07because uh really really cool. Uh okay,
- 3:11but we got to get to who are you and
- 3:15how did you get into our weird little
- 3:18business that we're in here? [gasps]
- 3:20>> Um so I started off working at real
- 3:24estate. I've been doing it for a few
- 3:25years. that's been successful and things
- 3:26have been going really well. I had I
- 3:29always had a desire to make things
- 3:30better and better and better and I was
- 3:33horrible at office politics and I think
- 3:35a lot of people get into business
- 3:36because of that. So I just thought if I
- 3:38own my own business things will get
- 3:40better. I didn't really have everything
- 3:43that I needed up front. So I just got
- 3:45really resourceful. I sold all my
- 3:46Bitcoin. Like I did everything that I
- 3:48could to just get my first laundromat.
- 3:50Um I was sold that it was a super easy
- 3:52business. You just collect coins.
- 3:54passive and it was supposed to be like a
- 3:5690% success rate. But I think that it
- 4:00was an absolutely hot mess when I first
- 4:02started it because when I did real
- 4:05estate, it was from the moment I wake up
- 4:07to when I sleep, it's always working.
- 4:08So, I needed the laundromat to be
- 4:10passive. It ended up needing so much
- 4:12more time commitment that I had the
- 4:14capacity for. Um, and then on top of
- 4:16that, people said it was like a safe
- 4:19business. Your money's parked here.
- 4:20You're good. But I was losing money like
- 4:24crazy. Um, we have rent. Right now we're
- 4:27sitting at 7K a month because our store
- 4:29is in um, Brooklyn, so it's a good area.
- 4:31But then we also have team members cuz
- 4:33if it's slightly even passive, there's
- 4:36always has to be people. We're open 7
- 4:38days a week, 12 hours a day, so we're
- 4:40sitting at 7,500 a month for just
- 4:42payroll. And then utilities are usually
- 4:44around I highball it, but I would say
- 4:46like 3k. Um, so I think everyone talks
- 4:50about good investment and there's so
- 4:52many good investments out there, but I
- 4:53feel like people maybe could have shared
- 4:55that every asset could become a
- 4:57liability pretty quickly.
- 4:59>> Yeah.
- 5:00Well, listen, I mean,
- 5:03unfortunately, I I've got solidarity
- 5:06with you here. Uh, you know, for those
- 5:08who know my story is pretty similar
- 5:10where I bought a laundromat, lost a ton
- 5:13of money and took a long time for me to
- 5:15figure it out. And I had a little bit of
- 5:18like a complex going on because I was
- 5:20like, dude, I mean, kind of like what
- 5:22you were saying, like there's supposed
- 5:23to be a 95% success rate here. How am I
- 5:27the [snorts] doofus who can't figure it
- 5:29out this easy business, right? And you
- 5:31know, for one, I think just for your
- 5:33peace of mind and my peace of mind and
- 5:35anybody out there listening, I think
- 5:36that stat's misleading. Uh I mean, I
- 5:38know for a fact that that stat is
- 5:40misleading. Um but I mean, there is a
- 5:42high success rate in this industry. It
- 5:44is a good industry, but uh it's like
- 5:46you're saying, it's not all sunshine and
- 5:49rainbows and and super easy uh either
- 5:51and super passive always either. Um,
- 5:55okay. So, let me let me rewind us a
- 5:58little bit and just ask you a couple
- 6:00questions about,
- 6:02you know, number one, where did the idea
- 6:05of buying a laundromat come from for
- 6:07you?
- 6:09>> I just wanted to make more money. Like,
- 6:11two years ago, I was so ready to keep
- 6:13growing. I think anybody watching this
- 6:14channel, we just want to make more money
- 6:15and do better. And I felt like I was
- 6:18capped in sales cuz it was active
- 6:20income. So, I needed to keep getting
- 6:21assets. I thought this was going to be a
- 6:23better return on investment because
- 6:25we're supposed to get maybe 60% 67% ROI.
- 6:28So, I was so ready to just dump all my
- 6:30money in and go. Um, I like the
- 6:33laundromat business a lot because I feel
- 6:35like it's a necessity and it's a lot of
- 6:37repeat customers. So, it's nice to be
- 6:39able to build relationships and know
- 6:40people for years, but I didn't know it
- 6:42would be um a little bit more difficult
- 6:44than I thought.
- 6:46>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And especially when um
- 6:52yeah, especially when you're kind of
- 6:54first getting into the business and uh
- 6:57not really sure what you're walking into
- 7:00because you've been sold something, it
- 7:02can feel like a like a punch in the gut.
- 7:04Uh when you get in and you're like,
- 7:06"Wait a second, this is not as passive
- 7:08as I thought. It's not the ROI is not
- 7:10what I thought it was going to be." Um
- 7:14yeah, that can definitely feel like a
- 7:15punch in the gut. Um, did you look at
- 7:18other business types or did you focus in
- 7:21on laundromats from from the get-go?
- 7:24>> At first I just went to bybisell.com. I
- 7:27saw a cafe and then I thought I didn't
- 7:29have enough to sustain a manager for a
- 7:32cafe. So, I quit that and then I found a
- 7:34deli. The deli owner just completely
- 7:36ignored me. And then I found a
- 7:37laundromat. The laundromat owner and
- 7:39broker both ignored me and then I found
- 7:40another laundromat and then finally I
- 7:42got accepted. Oh,
- 7:44>> nice. Nice. Well, maybe nice. Well, too
- 7:48soon to tell at the moment. Too soon to
- 7:49tell. Uh, yeah. Okay. So, you found you
- 7:52just found it online on just like Bisby
- 7:54sell or whatever.
- 7:55>> That's where it came from. Okay. But you
- 7:57were looking at a bunch of other
- 7:58businesses as well.
- 8:00>> Yeah. Okay.
- 8:02>> And then, so you bought this in 2024.
- 8:07When you bought the business, was it um
- 8:11like was it when you know based on what
- 8:14the seller was telling you, the broker,
- 8:15whoever was telling you when you took
- 8:17over, was it performing the way that you
- 8:20anticipated?
- 8:24>> I don't know.
- 8:26I don't actually count the money or the
- 8:31numbers. Um I think that it was
- 8:33definitely very busy. They had a lot
- 8:35more customers honestly when they
- 8:36started, but I failed completely over
- 8:39time.
- 8:41>> Well, okay.
- 8:43Can we talk about that a little bit?
- 8:45What do you mean by you failed uh over
- 8:47time? Like what why what makes you feel
- 8:48like you failed and like what do you
- 8:50think you did that was failing?
- 8:54>> I just it was always missing the little
- 8:57details. I didn't take care of something
- 8:59fast enough or something wasn't covered.
- 9:01I was focused on all the wrong things.
- 9:03Like I
- 9:05there were conflicts that were going on
- 9:07in shop that I focus on more than being
- 9:10proactive, thinking about like how can
- 9:13we make sure that consistently people
- 9:14are here like everything is going smooth
- 9:16for them. And I let fear take over
- 9:19instead of just remembering to focus on
- 9:21the people and make sure that everything
- 9:22is covered and there's problems that I
- 9:24still didn't solve.
- 9:27>> Yeah.
- 9:29>> Yeah. I mean, do you still have I'm
- 9:31assuming like, you know, when when you
- 9:35have problems that you've kind of
- 9:37neglect a little bit, they kind of can
- 9:38pile up on you. I mean, you still
- 9:40working on some of those things now. You
- 9:42feel like you have like, okay, you've
- 9:44identified some of these areas that you
- 9:46feel like, hey, these need improvement.
- 9:48This is what I need to do to improve, or
- 9:50you still trying to figure out even, you
- 9:52know, what to do there?
- 9:55>> Yes, we have certain things that I've
- 9:57focused on making better. Um we whenever
- 10:01there's an issue I'm more urgent about
- 10:02getting it pressed and a lot of times a
- 10:05lot of thing that pops up um in the
- 10:07laundromat I feel like things break down
- 10:09really quickly and sometimes I would
- 10:10take too long if it's something like AC.
- 10:13Um last year I waited too long. This
- 10:15year I was chasing people calling like I
- 10:17called at least 25 people to ask to help
- 10:19fix AC. Um but it's weird cuz like I
- 10:22didn't know going into this business I
- 10:23would have to chase people to pay them
- 10:25to help fix things which I'm happy for
- 10:28them. They're making good money.
- 10:31>> Yeah, that's real though. I mean that
- 10:34that's the same with like service
- 10:35technicians and like I'm like gosh man,
- 10:38don't you want to
- 10:39>> like make pay you really good money to
- 10:41come fix my machines? Like do you not
- 10:43want that or like just call me back just
- 10:45let me know. like yeah that's a
- 10:48definitely unexpected
- 10:51uh
- 10:52I guess side effect of being in this
- 10:54industry is that it's you're dealing
- 10:56with a lot of people that's like that's
- 10:58kind of similar I think with the
- 10:59construction industry where there's a
- 11:01lot of people that you know don't do
- 11:03things on time they don't communicate
- 11:04well you know they don't pick up the
- 11:06phone
- 11:07>> uh which I guess is a lesson for us pick
- 11:09up the phone huh
- 11:10>> but I don't even mind like if they don't
- 11:12pick up I feel like nobody owes me
- 11:14anything I'm just thankful for the one
- 11:15person that does answer.
- 11:17>> Yeah, I like that mindset. I like that
- 11:19mindset. So, you've owned this thing for
- 11:21for a couple years now.
- 11:24>> Um I I think it was like right before we
- 11:26start hit record actually, but you're
- 11:27saying, "Hey, as of the last few months,
- 11:29I'm I'm really trying to step up my game
- 11:31here and, you know, put more effort in
- 11:34and
- 11:35>> uh make something out of this business."
- 11:38Did Did What was the turning point for
- 11:40you of okay, I need to like put in more
- 11:43effort here. Um, I'm gonna really make a
- 11:45honest effort at this business.
- 11:49>> I was gonna sell it. Like it was I had a
- 11:53deal come through. They were going to
- 11:54pay me a lot of money and I was
- 11:58>> I was trying urgently to get it done
- 11:59before my birthday cuz I felt like
- 12:00there's no other better way to celebrate
- 12:02my life than to have a ton of
- 12:03money. So, I was chasing them
- 12:05>> every single day and the lawyers. I was
- 12:07like, "Hey, can we get the contract?
- 12:08Like, what's going on? Can we move
- 12:09forward?" And people were like, "Oh, we
- 12:11just have to wait. We just have to
- 12:12wait." Like, it was weeks of this. I was
- 12:14literally like literally I felt like I
- 12:15was begging to get this contract to get
- 12:17it done and then I got ignored and
- 12:19ignored. Finally, they signed. It's my
- 12:20birthday. And then 1 hour after they
- 12:23signed, I'm just vomiting out of
- 12:25nowhere. And it's like I've never
- 12:28vomited in years. And then I told them,
- 12:30"Hey, I think something's wrong. I feel
- 12:31like my body's trying to tell me
- 12:32something. I think I'm going to pull
- 12:33out." And then they're like, "Okay." But
- 12:36they kept coming back saying like, "Hey,
- 12:37we still want this shop." I'm like,
- 12:38"Okay." And then I said, "Hey, actually,
- 12:40I'll give it to you guys. Like nothing's
- 12:41working. It's cool. And then all of a
- 12:44sudden, my stomach went through like
- 12:45extreme pain. I never had it before. And
- 12:48finally, like I couldn't even go to
- 12:49work. I had to just go home and I was
- 12:51like, "Hey, I'm not going to sell. It'll
- 12:52be fine." And when I said, "I'm not
- 12:54going to sell." Then my body just felt
- 12:56fine again. So I don't know if it's like
- 12:59I don't know, maybe I'm crazy, but I
- 13:01just felt like if I really signed, I
- 13:04didn't know what was going to happen and
- 13:05I was scared to sell. So I said, "At
- 13:08this point, you don't have much more to
- 13:10lose. I feel like I should just put
- 13:11myself out there because it can't get
- 13:13worse than this.
- 13:15>> Yeah.
- 13:17>> Yeah. Wow. That's crazy.
- 13:19>> That's crazy.
- 13:21>> But I I mean that's, you know, kudos to
- 13:24you for listening to your body and
- 13:26listen to, you know, you know what you
- 13:28think the right path is to go because
- 13:30that's not easy either. Uh, but that's
- 13:33that's pretty wild that your your body
- 13:35is literally saying, "Hey, this might
- 13:38not be the might not be the right move
- 13:40for you. Uh, maybe there's something
- 13:42more to learn, more to gain here for
- 13:45you."
- 13:46>> Which is crazy. So, so that's kind of
- 13:48what prompted you to be like, "Okay,
- 13:50well, if I'm going to keep it, then I'm
- 13:51gonna make a real honest effort here."
- 13:54Is that Yeah. Yeah. And then what about
- 13:57the content stuff? Did you decide to do
- 14:00that kind of at the same time or you're
- 14:01like, "Well, if I'm gonna make an honest
- 14:02effort, I'm just gonna document it." Is
- 14:04that
- 14:05>> Yes. I said if I'm gonna make um an
- 14:08honest effort, I'm just going to
- 14:09document it. It's been like it's been
- 14:12failing since I got it. I've been a
- 14:14failing business owner and like that's
- 14:16fine. But every business that I ever
- 14:18did, I always lost money in the
- 14:19beginning. And it's like everything I
- 14:20ever did in my life, I sucked at. Real
- 14:22estate, it was like three months of not
- 14:24closing a deal and then finally it
- 14:26worked out. So, I was okay with failing.
- 14:27And I was okay with looking bad because
- 14:28I feel like everything that we start
- 14:31kind of ends up like that. Even though
- 14:32it's been prolonged, everyone I met, I
- 14:36mean, everyone I'm close to, I think all
- 14:38of them have told me that maybe it's
- 14:40better that I cave in and just sell it.
- 14:41And like I respect that cuz they're
- 14:43looking out for me and they want to help
- 14:44me. But
- 14:46>> everyone that's watching this, like
- 14:47everyone in your life has one
- 14:49misunderstanding about you. There's so
- 14:50many things people think they know about
- 14:51you, but they don't. So, I couldn't
- 14:53listen because I respect where they're
- 14:56coming and they want to help, but I have
- 14:57to be stubborn because there is every
- 14:59reason to quit. We're losing like
- 15:01thousands of dollars every single month
- 15:03and we have been for like God knows how
- 15:05long, but I keep going because if I keep
- 15:09changing and if I keep trying something
- 15:11different, something good can come out
- 15:12of it. The workload I'm going to have to
- 15:13put in is insane. I don't want to do it.
- 15:15I do want to quit sometimes, but it's
- 15:17like who I was one year ago. I was
- 15:20worried about problems that don't
- 15:21matter. And now I'm focused on like
- 15:24doing changes, actually making
- 15:25marketing, and it's like nothing's
- 15:26working, but I'm not caving in. So, I
- 15:28just want to keep focusing and keep
- 15:29trying to progress to the next thing and
- 15:31just keep pushing forward because until
- 15:33it happens, then I'm just going to be
- 15:34stuck here. And that's fine, I think.
- 15:38>> Yeah. Dang, man. I'm like,
- 15:41I love all of that because that's
- 15:44exactly what I was feeling, right? And
- 15:46like people were telling me the same
- 15:48thing, like you got to just get out of
- 15:50it. And there were definitely
- 15:52>> many moments where I was like, yeah, I
- 15:54definitely need to get out of it.
- 15:56[laughter]
- 15:57Man, if I was smart, I would stop right
- 15:59now. And I don't know about for you, but
- 16:01for me, part of there's like a couple
- 16:03things going on internally for me, it
- 16:05was like part of me was like, well, I'm
- 16:08not going to quit being in the 5% that
- 16:11failed in this business. So I, you know,
- 16:14just the stubborn, prideful part of me,
- 16:16I guess, was like, no. Uh, and then the
- 16:19other part of me was like,
- 16:22I want to make this happen. Like, I want
- 16:24to, you know, build something for myself
- 16:28and I want to do something good for the
- 16:30community I'm serving. And um and so
- 16:33there's kind of both of those things
- 16:34going on for me that kept me driving
- 16:37uh even when I was losing thousands of
- 16:40dollars a month uh too. And definitely
- 16:43not easy. Definitely would prefer to not
- 16:47go through that again if I don't have
- 16:49to. But also definitely
- 16:52has completely shaped my life. Just that
- 16:56experience of going through all that and
- 16:58persevering through it and figuring it
- 17:00out. It has completely changed my life.
- 17:03Uh, and now, you know, I I have so much
- 17:07I mean, it sounds like you already have
- 17:08this, which I I was I didn't have at
- 17:10least in the middle of when I was going
- 17:12through it. But I I have so much
- 17:13confidence now that I can make a mistake
- 17:18>> and
- 17:20and it's not going to ruin me, right?
- 17:22Like I think I had this fear like, man,
- 17:24I'm going to make a mistake. I'm going
- 17:26to be a failure and you know and it's
- 17:29just going to ruin my life. And now I'm
- 17:32like, whoa,
- 17:34I might fail at something, but I'm not a
- 17:37failure. Uh, and you know, I have
- 17:41confidence that no matter what hole I
- 17:43dig myself into now, I can dig myself
- 17:45out because I dug myself out of that
- 17:46one. Right? So, I don't know. I'm just
- 17:49sharing like stream of consciousness
- 17:50like some of the the internal stuff
- 17:52going on within me when I was going
- 17:54through the exact same type of scenario
- 17:56that sounds like you're going through
- 17:57right now.
- 17:58>> Yeah.
- 17:59>> I don't know any of that resonate or how
- 18:02are you thinking about it?
- 18:04>> I want people to try like it's like it
- 18:07this is hell. I hate it. I want to get
- 18:09out but like it's just we have to try
- 18:11cuz whether I'm doing this or whether
- 18:13I'm not trying this things are hell. I
- 18:15feel like even if I don't have a
- 18:17business to work on, like if there's
- 18:18nothing going on in my life, then I
- 18:19always invent problems. And it's like
- 18:21I'd rather have real world problems and
- 18:22maybe a 2% ch chance of getting better
- 18:26than to just not try and just feel like,
- 18:28oh, what if? Like, yeah, I did what if
- 18:30and it it's going very very very bad,
- 18:33but at least I saw the outcome and at
- 18:35least I put the effort in. And I don't
- 18:36want like I feel like it's easy to just
- 18:40stay back and do what's comfortable and
- 18:42safe, but I feel like it's it's also
- 18:44nice to try and give in full effort even
- 18:47maybe it doesn't go well.
- 18:49>> Yeah.
- 18:51Uh question for you.
- 18:53>> Oh, well, number one, I just want to say
- 18:55this because I think I wanted somebody
- 18:57to say this to me, but your story is not
- 18:59done yet. So, you know, this I think is
- 19:04probably still gonna it's going to turn
- 19:05around. And I I'm confident about that
- 19:07and you're going to be fine. Uh and the
- 19:09and the business I think will probably
- 19:10be fine too. But question for you like
- 19:13looking back now and if you could go
- 19:16back right now to you two years ago,
- 19:20what would you do different? What would
- 19:22you what would you tell yourself to do
- 19:23differently than you did last time
- 19:25around? Maybe besides not buying that
- 19:27laundromat or maybe it's not buying that
- 19:29specific one, but what would you do
- 19:31differently?
- 19:33I feel like I would have
- 19:36I would have pushed myself to focus on
- 19:38different things. It's it's hard because
- 19:41I don't just it's not just the
- 19:43laundromat for me. I do real estate
- 19:45full-time. So, it's like 7 days a week.
- 19:48I have a second job on the side and then
- 19:51I'm exhausted. I'm tired. Sometimes I'm
- 19:52up till like 2:00 a.m. 3:00 a.m. trying
- 19:54to focus on finishing up work for the
- 19:56laundromat, too. I would have told
- 19:58myself to focus just on
- 20:01I think making sure that everyone has a
- 20:02good experience and then after I would
- 20:04have focused on trying to scale possibly
- 20:07get more clients for pickup and
- 20:08delivery. Every other problem I feel
- 20:10like that could have been resolved but
- 20:11instead of
- 20:13instead of just trying to be in the
- 20:15business I would have tried to grow and
- 20:17focus on the work on the business
- 20:19instead of in the business.
- 20:21>> Yeah.
- 20:24>> Yeah.
- 20:25Yeah. when I feel like uh I mean it
- 20:28sounds like you were kind of set up like
- 20:30in a way that a lot of us were. I mean I
- 20:32feel like I was too in the sense of you
- 20:34know being sold as a passive business
- 20:38and
- 20:40uh and then coming into it with that
- 20:42mindset. I see people going wrong all
- 20:44the time because they just are sold that
- 20:47it's a passive business and so they come
- 20:50in and are very passive with it and
- 20:53things degrade quickly [laughter]
- 20:55uh if you don't like pay attention to
- 20:58those details you were talking about. Is
- 21:00that is that
- 21:02>> kind of how you came into with that that
- 21:03mindset or how were you thinking about
- 21:05it when you got in?
- 21:08>> I was very passive. very very passive
- 21:11because I was like, "Oh, I'll just make
- 21:12enough money in real estate and then
- 21:13I'll use that to cover the laundromat um
- 21:16expenses."
- 21:18>> Yeah.
- 21:20Yeah. That's a dangerous one too, right?
- 21:22It's like I I would like ask myself like
- 21:26why am I working to pay for a business
- 21:29that's not like the business is supposed
- 21:31to be making money for me. Why am I
- 21:32working to pay for that uh out of my own
- 21:35paycheck? Uh
- 21:38but part of it's a process, you know.
- 21:39That's a process.
- 21:41>> Definitely.
- 21:42Um, okay. So,
- 21:45um, you're,
- 21:47you know, as the business was struggling
- 21:50over the last couple years, what, how
- 21:52are you
- 21:54like, were you just not paying too much
- 21:56attention or you, like you said, you
- 21:58were just okay with it? You're like,
- 21:59I'll just pay for it through my real
- 22:01estate sales or whatever.
- 22:05I've
- 22:07I have been
- 22:10I've been working really hard for the
- 22:13past year to just lose money and all the
- 22:18money
- 22:20like
- 22:24the expenses for the laundromat in total
- 22:26I think it's around like 15 17k because
- 22:30it's $7,000 a month for the rent and
- 22:32then we have $7,500
- 22:34for payroll.
- 22:35$3,000 for utilities and then if
- 22:38something breaks maybe an extra 1k if
- 22:40it's AC 2K. So monthto month like
- 22:43everything changes. Um it's been
- 22:46terrifying thinking that like every
- 22:49month I have to make $17,000 to break
- 22:53even on a 140 a pound.
- 22:57It's
- 22:57>> Mhm. Um,
- 23:00I think logically
- 23:03it's just been
- 23:06I felt like there wasn't a way out and
- 23:07then when I found a way out, it seemed
- 23:09like an even worse way out. So then I
- 23:11jump back in and now the only way out is
- 23:13to make it successful. Otherwise, I'm
- 23:15just like this for years.
- 23:21>> Yeah.
- 23:22>> Yeah. that the the thought of that
- 23:27is a good motivator I would say u
- 23:30thought of things just kind of staying
- 23:31the same and it's like the whole you
- 23:33know man now I forget this I always
- 23:36butcher these sayings but it's like you
- 23:38know if you want something different you
- 23:40got to do something different kind of
- 23:41thing right if you want the same results
- 23:43do the same things you're gonna get the
- 23:45same results uh kind of thing and you
- 23:48know it sounds like you're on the front
- 23:51end of
- 23:53kind of that mindset shift of like,
- 23:55okay, I need to turn this into something
- 23:57otherwise it's going to stay the same
- 24:01lo like working to pay for a business.
- 24:03Working to pay for other people's
- 24:05laundry really is what you're doing. U
- 24:08which is not the goal of buying this
- 24:10business,
- 24:11>> but they're so nice.
- 24:14>> Well, yes, I I mean I get that. I get
- 24:17that. Uh maybe maybe better to just sell
- 24:20the laundromat and pay for people's
- 24:21laundry then.
- 24:23[laughter]
- 24:25>> Uh yeah. So, okay. Over the last couple
- 24:28months, uh what have you what's that
- 24:31look like? This this change like what
- 24:32have you started doing differently?
- 24:35>> The other months I was just
- 24:38I was just doing what I had to do.
- 24:40What's it called? When guys are the bare
- 24:42minimum for girls. I was the bare
- 24:44minimum for this business. Um, yeah.
- 24:46[laughter]
- 24:47>> Just keep keep her around. Keep her
- 24:48around. Do do the most I have to or the
- 24:50least I have to do to keep her around.
- 24:52Yeah, I like that. [laughter]
- 24:54>> But I basically it was just standard
- 24:56like I was acting as a manager. I wasn't
- 24:58acting as like a business owner. And I
- 25:01think these past two months I've been
- 25:03more proactive. I've been trying to see
- 25:04like, hey, how do we get the word out?
- 25:06We've been doing Instagram reels, like
- 25:08Tik Tok reels, as much content as I
- 25:10could. And then we've been pushing out
- 25:11flyers. We've been trying little
- 25:12changes. I got like a billboard.
- 25:14Anything that I could to keep pushing
- 25:16the word out and keep trying changes, I
- 25:18wanted to do it. Um, it was just in the
- 25:22past it was just what kind of
- 25:24do I have to take care of so this place
- 25:25doesn't fall apart and burn down. But
- 25:27now it's like oh how can we actually
- 25:29make things better? Like what can I do
- 25:30today to work on it? And it's been more
- 25:33exciting. It's a bit tough because it's
- 25:37I feel like any business owner like it
- 25:38was never we just came in here because
- 25:40we thought it was going to be better and
- 25:42there was more freedom, but I feel like
- 25:44there's no freedom for a short time and
- 25:46I'm willing to accept that. And even if
- 25:47I have to sleep less for like maybe a
- 25:49few months, I'm okay with that, too.
- 25:52But what was the question? Because I
- 25:54feel like I kind of fell off. [laughter]
- 25:56>> No, I was just No, I was just talking
- 25:57about uh or asking you about like what
- 26:00what have you started doing differently
- 26:01over the last couple months? I mean,
- 26:03you're talking about kind of your your
- 26:04frame of mind, your mindset, being
- 26:07different, acting more like a business
- 26:09owner as opposed to the do the bare
- 26:12minimum uh kind of person.
- 26:14>> Um
- 26:16>> yeah. Uh yeah, but I mean I think that
- 26:19that's uh
- 26:22I mean
- 26:24you said something in there. I just want
- 26:26to highlight this because I think it's
- 26:27so key and I think it's the exact
- 26:30opposite of
- 26:31>> the mindset you and I both kind of came
- 26:34into this business with and a lot of
- 26:35people coming into this business with.
- 26:36You said,
- 26:38>> I might have to work really hard for a
- 26:39little while. I might have to go with no
- 26:42sleep. I might have to, you know, be
- 26:44exhausted for a while, but it's for a
- 26:47reason, right? It's for a purpose.
- 26:51>> How many hours did you get to sleep when
- 26:53you were starting?
- 26:55>> [laughter]
- 26:56>> Well, it was Well, I also had like a
- 26:58baby at the same time. Uh, so I but I
- 27:03[snorts] mean I not many like I I was
- 27:05working a lot like the whole goal for
- 27:06me, this is this is the irony, right?
- 27:08And this is probably for you too. The
- 27:09whole goal for me was like I found out
- 27:12about laundromats through a family
- 27:13friend. He bought one laundromat,
- 27:15replaced his tech income and went from
- 27:17working 60 to 70 hours a week to working
- 27:20five or 10 hours a week. And I was like,
- 27:22"Yeah, that sounds great. I'll do that.
- 27:25And so the whole goal was money coming
- 27:27in with very little time commitment. And
- 27:30it ended up being the exact opposite. I
- 27:31was losing money and I was spending a
- 27:34ton of time
- 27:36uh on the business. So it was it was
- 27:39rough. It was like one of the roughest
- 27:41times of my life, honestly. Uh because I
- 27:44was losing money and I was couldn't
- 27:46figure out what to do and I felt like a
- 27:48failure and was embarrassed. And then I
- 27:51had people telling me I told you so. and
- 27:53yada yada yada. But
- 27:56>> uh yeah, to answer your question though,
- 27:58not much sleep for sure because even
- 28:01when I was at home and in bed, I'd like
- 28:05lay awake trying to figure out how to
- 28:08get out of my situation [laughter]
- 28:09like no matter how or I'd wake up in the
- 28:12middle of the night and then I couldn't
- 28:13go back to sleep because I'm like, what
- 28:14am I going to do? Like,
- 28:17you know, I can't I can't turn this
- 28:19thing around. It took it took a little
- 28:21while. took a couple years.
- 28:23>> It won't take you that long, but
- 28:25>> starting now.
- 28:27>> Yeah, it won't it won't take you that
- 28:28long. I I guarantee you. I mean, you
- 28:30have a different mindset, right? You
- 28:32have that,
- 28:33>> okay, I'm gonna have to double down. And
- 28:35I think that that's like a big
- 28:36difference for a lot of people. A lot of
- 28:39people want the passive income,
- 28:40>> right?
- 28:41>> But and passive income is a thing, but
- 28:45you never just get maybe not in this
- 28:47business so much, uh, at least for a
- 28:50while, but you never get passive income
- 28:52until there's a mountain of work put
- 28:56behind that passive income, right?
- 28:59>> Always takes a mountain of work to get
- 29:02passive income. And there's not, at
- 29:05least to my knowledge, there's not
- 29:06really a whole lot of ways to shortcut
- 29:08this. Um, so,
- 29:11you know, but that's that's what you're
- 29:14saying. You're like, hey, I'm going to
- 29:15put in a mountain of work here if it
- 29:17needs it, you know, to get to that point
- 29:19where I don't have to put in the
- 29:20mountain of work every day.
- 29:23But, but it, you know, it's going to be
- 29:26some work. It's gonna be some work.
- 29:30Yeah. Um, do you have a sense of
- 29:35do you have a sense of
- 29:37what
- 29:39is missing or what is wrong
- 29:44that
- 29:45needs to be fixed to or or added or
- 29:49replaced to grow this business? This
- 29:52your particular one.
- 29:56I think I'm the number one problem
- 29:58because I even though oh I'm really
- 30:00trying like to be honest I feel like I
- 30:03could have been trying harder even
- 30:05though oh I have this I have that like
- 30:06everything's an excuse. Nobody
- 30:09nobody wants to hear I just
- 30:11haven't done enough and I feel like
- 30:12anything is possible with the right
- 30:14amount of effort and if I'm doing the
- 30:15correct things then of course it's going
- 30:17to work out. I think that the number one
- 30:19thing, the only way that I'm going to be
- 30:20able to fix this is um pickup and
- 30:22delivery because for 25 cents for 7
- 30:27minutes, I don't know how I'm going to
- 30:28reach $17,000
- 30:30um a month in expenses. But I,
- 30:36you know, honestly, I'm lost. I have no
- 30:38idea what to do. So, I'm just gonna
- 30:41>> Yeah.
- 30:43>> Yeah. No, and listen, I I mean, we
- 30:44talked about this before hitting record.
- 30:46I mean, I think we should just jump on a
- 30:47call and and go through everything kind
- 30:49of systematically and and develop a
- 30:51plan.
- 30:52>> Uh because mostly for selfish reasons so
- 30:55that you know, you can come back on
- 30:56later and be like,
- 30:57>> "My business is doing great now. This is
- 31:00awesome. I love it." Right? That's my
- 31:01selfish for another podcast episode. Uh
- 31:05no, but I mean I I think that's tough,
- 31:07right? And and again, I don't want to
- 31:09like
- 31:11totally parallel my story with your
- 31:12story, but there's just so many
- 31:13parallels here where, you know, when
- 31:16you're in the middle of this situation,
- 31:18>> like you're losing money and like it's
- 31:21so [clears throat]
- 31:23so hard to see the path out. Like you're
- 31:27too in it. And it takes somebody kind of
- 31:30outside of the situation to look in and
- 31:32be like, "Okay, here's, you know, here's
- 31:35the path out of the forest." like you're
- 31:37in a deep dark forest right now. Here's
- 31:38the path out. You can't see it because
- 31:40you're in it, but here's the path out.
- 31:42Um,
- 31:44and you know, and one thing I want to
- 31:46say too is I really appreciate about you
- 31:51that you are just kind of taking
- 31:53responsibility for it here and you're
- 31:55saying, "Hey, it's on me. Like, I made
- 31:57some mistakes and it's on me and it's
- 31:59going to be up to me to dig my way out
- 32:02of this." I really appreciate that and I
- 32:04think that that's a great mindset to
- 32:07have. Um
- 32:09my only one thing I want to say to you
- 32:11is don't be too hard on yourself. Uh
- 32:15because taking responsibility is good
- 32:17and taking responsibility for for the
- 32:19mistakes and for the actions it's going
- 32:21to take to fix the mistakes good
- 32:24but beating yourself up not good and not
- 32:27helpful and productive because you're
- 32:29not a you're not a failure at this
- 32:31laundromat because you still have it and
- 32:34it hasn't failed yet. It's not
- 32:36performing but it hasn't failed yet. And
- 32:40also you've succeeded in a lot of other
- 32:42areas in life, right? And you got to
- 32:45give yourself a little grace that you've
- 32:47owned it for two years, but you haven't
- 32:48really
- 32:50I mean, according to you, you like you
- 32:52haven't really put a whole lot of effort
- 32:53in in for for two years. You've only
- 32:56been doing that for a couple months
- 32:57here. And so, you're kind of just new
- 33:00still at this. And there's more to
- 33:02learn. And like you said, you're just
- 33:04anybody when they start something new,
- 33:06you're not really good at it. And it
- 33:08takes a little time to to get good. So,
- 33:11I just wanted to tell you that because I
- 33:13I do really appreciate that you take
- 33:14responsibility, you know, and have
- 33:16acknowledged like I've had excuses and
- 33:18things like that, but you know, I'm
- 33:20going to have to dig my way out of this,
- 33:22which I appreciate, but I don't want you
- 33:24to beat yourself up and feel bad because
- 33:27that won't help, right? And it's
- 33:29probably not true. Uh it's probably not
- 33:32all your fault and there probably is
- 33:34things you can do better and
- 33:35differently. Uh but I like she's making
- 33:39faces like well maybe it's it's my
- 33:41fault. It's [laughter]
- 33:44uh that's funny. Um okay. Well, and I
- 33:47think that mindset is is why like I
- 33:50don't have any worries for you. Like I
- 33:52know, you know, you walk a mile in the
- 33:55forest, you might have to walk a mile
- 33:56out, but you're going to get out, you
- 34:00know, and maybe you'll find somebody
- 34:03with a dirt bike coming by that can help
- 34:06speed you out. I don't know. Maybe. You
- 34:08know what I mean? That's what I'm
- 34:10talking about. That's what I'm talking
- 34:11about. Um, okay. So, you're still doing
- 34:15real estate full-time. Is that your main
- 34:18gig?
- 34:19real estate we do full-time. I
- 34:25I
- 34:26pretty much
- 34:29I think it's more real estate than
- 34:32laundromat still just because I I can't
- 34:34stop real estate otherwise
- 34:37>> store pay for [laughter] the laundromat.
- 34:41>> Um but I I love real estate so much. I
- 34:44love doing it with the laundromat. I
- 34:46just it's just been challenging to
- 34:48juggle things and I'm learning as I go.
- 34:52>> Yeah.
- 34:53>> Well, I'll tell you too that uh owning a
- 34:56laundromat is a lot more fun when you
- 34:58make money owning the laundromat. So,
- 35:01let's uh get you making money with the
- 35:02laundromat and the real estate for a
- 35:04little while there and uh it'll be a lot
- 35:06more fun for you. How about that? Yeah.
- 35:10Um how how much are you working on the
- 35:13laundromat these days? Like cuz when
- 35:15you're working full-time, I know you're
- 35:17like pulling double duty and stuff, but
- 35:19like you have an idea of like how many
- 35:20hours you're putting into the laundromat
- 35:22right now?
- 35:23>> Not exactly because it gets really
- 35:25sporadic throughout the day. Um, if
- 35:27anything happens, I try and resolve it.
- 35:29But usually from morning till like 5:00
- 35:32p.m. 8:00 p.m. it's real estate. And
- 35:35then laundromat stuff, it'll either
- 35:37happen from 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. or
- 35:4111:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. 3:00 a.m. Um, I
- 35:45think it is probably like now that
- 35:47you're saying it, I should be putting in
- 35:49more hours. So, I I appreciate you
- 35:50asking.
- 35:51>> Well, okay. Hold on here. I'm not saying
- 35:54to stay up later at night. I mean, you
- 35:56also need to sleep. You got to sleep a
- 35:58little bit at least. Some
- 36:02some You're human, right? You got to
- 36:05sleep.
- 36:06>> But I wake up late, so I'll wake up at
- 36:08like 10 p.m. 10 a.m.
- 36:10>> Okay. I was like 10 p.m. That's just
- 36:12late. Maybe you're sleeping too much. I
- 36:14don't know. No, I'm just kidding. Uh
- 36:17yeah. Okay. Well, as long as you're
- 36:19getting some sleep still, I still want
- 36:20you to be able to sleep. So,
- 36:22>> well, yeah. I just I wasn't asking that.
- 36:24So, you put more hours in. I was just
- 36:25curious like how many you're putting in.
- 36:27Uh what are you what are you doing with
- 36:29those hours? Like when you're when
- 36:30you're working, are you Yeah. What are
- 36:32you doing?
- 36:33>> The number one thing that's gotten me
- 36:35the most reach has always been content.
- 36:37So even though if I make a video, if it
- 36:40just gets if it one video gets 1,000
- 36:42views on Tik Tok, and then one video
- 36:45gets 500 views on Instagram, 300 on
- 36:47YouTube, together, that's 1,800 people
- 36:49that saw the story. And if I do that
- 36:52every single day, I could get 30,000
- 36:54views. there's no money that I have to
- 36:57pay for just the organic content. So, I
- 36:59feel like that's been the most helpful.
- 37:01Um, and then besides that, we've been
- 37:03trying to get into online stuff.
- 37:04Everyone's telling me SEO. So, yesterday
- 37:06I set up Google Ads. And then I'm trying
- 37:09to learn more and more for Google My
- 37:10Business. We did post up until June
- 37:1318th. So, anything online that I can set
- 37:15up, I've been trying to, but I feel like
- 37:18a lost dog and I don't know what's going
- 37:21on.
- 37:23>> Yeah. Well, couple couple thoughts on
- 37:25that just uh just from my perspective.
- 37:28Number one, I mean, I think all that's
- 37:30great and I think uh the content stuff
- 37:32is really good and you're right that you
- 37:35know, you're getting a lot of views just
- 37:37kind of organically, which is good.
- 37:39>> I found that doesn't always translate,
- 37:41at least immediately, to customers
- 37:45coming in the door. I don't know. Have
- 37:46you seen more customers coming in
- 37:47because of that yet or not yet?
- 37:50>> I think we got maybe
- 37:54self-service wise, I saw it increase.
- 37:57So, I feel like it's going well there.
- 37:58And then one girl was in the store. She
- 37:59was like, "Oh, your content's working. I
- 38:01saw you on TikTok." But
- 38:02>> Oh, nice.
- 38:05>> For pickup and delivery, I'm not sure.
- 38:07We did get one new person um that I'm
- 38:10sure is from the content, but I haven't
- 38:12been able to track enough. So, I think
- 38:14definitely either I need to double down
- 38:17on content and triple it, or I don't
- 38:20know what to do. Well, you're you're
- 38:22just starting it, right? It takes it's
- 38:24like the whole like hockey stick effect,
- 38:26right? It's like takes some time for it
- 38:28to kind of ramp up, ramp up, ramp up,
- 38:30and then you'll get you'll take off. And
- 38:32you will your content's really good. Uh
- 38:34that's why I was like, let's let's snag
- 38:36her now. Get her on here now before
- 38:38she's famous. Uh yeah. Yeah. Uh but so
- 38:43it'll it'll keep growing for sure. Um,
- 38:46and also SEO is really good and I would
- 38:48definitely, you know, keep working on
- 38:50the SEO, you know, stuff and the Google
- 38:53business. Like the Google business is
- 38:54probably the biggest thing. So stay on
- 38:56top of that.
- 38:57>> Um, but um,
- 39:00SEO and content tend to be really good
- 39:04for the long game.
- 39:07>> Yeah. and Google business uh
- 39:11optimization and ads specifically for
- 39:15pickup and delivery tend to be good for
- 39:18adding customers in the short game. Now,
- 39:20the benefit of social media and all that
- 39:24stuff is it's free. Like you're saying,
- 39:26it's organic, it's free, and the ads you
- 39:28have to pay, which is really I'll just
- 39:30speak from my experience. It was really
- 39:31hard for me to send any marketing
- 39:34dollars out when I was losing money
- 39:36because it just feels like more money
- 39:37going out. Um, but with that said, that
- 39:41is the way to grow kind of the service
- 39:45side of the business, the drop off or
- 39:46pick up and delivery quicker in the
- 39:49short term. Um, so it's kind of a both
- 39:51and a shortterm and a longer term uh
- 39:54play there.
- 39:56Can I ask you when you were going to
- 39:59quit? What what made you decide to keep
- 40:01going? And then how are you different
- 40:02from the person that started in the
- 40:05beginning?
- 40:07>> Yeah, good question. So, um
- 40:11I just vulnerable moment over here. Uh
- 40:15you know, part of what made me not quit
- 40:16is
- 40:18not wanting to feel like a failure. um
- 40:22you know and then a little bit of that
- 40:23stubbornness. But the other side of it
- 40:26was I didn't know how to get out. Like I
- 40:29literally didn't know how to get out.
- 40:31I'm like well I'm not making any money.
- 40:34Like who's going to buy my laundromat?
- 40:37And you know I was like underwater. I
- 40:40had like loans and stuff and like for
- 40:43equipment and
- 40:45uh I just I literally just didn't know
- 40:47how to get out and I couldn't find
- 40:49anybody to help me and I was scared to I
- 40:51was scared to reach out to a broker
- 40:52because the broker was the one who got
- 40:54me into the situation in the first
- 40:57place, you know, and so I didn't I just
- 41:01didn't know how to get out. Part of me
- 41:02was like, "No, I'm going to make it
- 41:03work." And part of me was like, "No, I
- 41:05want out, but I just don't know how to
- 41:07get out." Um,
- 41:09so there's that. And then how I'm
- 41:12different. I mean, you said something
- 41:14that really resonated with me. You were
- 41:15like, um, you know, I was just dealing
- 41:18with
- 41:20problems that felt like a big deal at
- 41:23the time. Now those problems don't feel
- 41:26nearly as big. Like I'm able to handle
- 41:29bigger problems.
- 41:32Um, I have been thoroughly convinced
- 41:36that I'm I've I tend to be like a lone
- 41:39wolf
- 41:40>> kind of guy like do things on my own.
- 41:42I'm very now especially you know I'm
- 41:45like very confident in my competence
- 41:48>> and but that that makes my tendency to
- 41:52be to depend only on myself and
- 41:56>> want to do everything on my own.
- 41:59However, I am now thoroughly convinced I
- 42:01have to do this consciously. So, this is
- 42:03not like a reflex for me, but I'm
- 42:05thoroughly convinced that
- 42:08involving other people is
- 42:12so much better. I mean, problems get
- 42:15solved faster. I get perspectives I
- 42:17couldn't get on my own. Um, you know, if
- 42:20I'm ever going to do something new, like
- 42:22buy a new business or a new investment
- 42:23or something like that. you I heard
- 42:26somebody I can't remember who said this
- 42:27but you know they said when you're doing
- 42:30something new like that borrow somebody
- 42:32else's 10,000 hours right um and
- 42:37that resonates with me so much after my
- 42:40experience right and and the thing too
- 42:42like right if we if you and I had had a
- 42:44conversation before you bought this
- 42:46laundromat we might have been able to
- 42:49you know save you some heartache and
- 42:51some money here uh with that right Um,
- 42:55>> I'm so glad.
- 42:55>> But you know,
- 42:58I was here. I was waiting for you to
- 42:59call. I was waiting for you now.
- 43:00>> Sounds good.
- 43:01>> Yeah. Well, and and maybe we can maybe
- 43:04we can do something now and and help you
- 43:06dig out faster, right? Um, but I that's
- 43:09a big difference in me because, you
- 43:12know, I don't know why I have that
- 43:14tendency. There's probably some like
- 43:16childhood trauma or something behind it
- 43:18or something. I don't know. Um, but I
- 43:22have a hard time asking for help and I
- 43:26have a hard time like acknowledging
- 43:27when, you know, I need help. Uh, and
- 43:32that's why like it took me a lot longer
- 43:34to dig myself out of that lawn
- 43:36laundromat, that first laundromat hole
- 43:37than it should have because I was trying
- 43:39to do it on my own. So, that's a big big
- 43:43shift, you know, for me. But also again
- 43:46because I stuck through it, it it gave
- 43:48me a lot of confidence
- 43:50to be able to overcome problems. And
- 43:53it's, you know, I think there's levels
- 43:55to all this too, you know, and I think
- 43:57there's probably a lot more of that for
- 43:59me to learn at bigger and bigger stages,
- 44:02bigger and bigger levels, but problems
- 44:04that used to feel like a really big deal
- 44:06like don't phase me anymore.
- 44:09So yeah,
- 44:13that's a little bit of my baggage
- 44:18>> from my [clears throat] my experience.
- 44:21Um, okay. So,
- 44:23do you you might you might not even know
- 44:25the answer to this question, but
- 44:27>> do you like what's the goal right now? I
- 44:30mean, obviously the the immediate goal
- 44:32is to try to get this thing profitable
- 44:34as quickly as possible. Um,
- 44:37are you trying to get it profitable so
- 44:40you can keep it? Profitable so you can
- 44:42sell it?
- 44:44I Do you have an idea? You're not sure
- 44:46yet?
- 44:50>> I just need a happy ending because I I
- 44:53feel like
- 44:56before we had the businesses, I feel
- 44:58like everyone at some point we have like
- 45:01winters in our lives where things are
- 45:03just horrible and it's like things are
- 45:04unfair. It's one break after another,
- 45:06being hit at you, one cut, whatever. But
- 45:09it's
- 45:11I feel like if you can go through the
- 45:13pain of life just sucking because it
- 45:15sucks no matter what, then I feel like
- 45:17it's training us for something better.
- 45:19And it's like my life sucked for no
- 45:21reason. Now I can make it suck because I
- 45:22have a business, but have a 2% chance of
- 45:24increasing it, being better, and having
- 45:26it become a happy ending. And I like
- 45:28business because I feel like it gives
- 45:30you the opportunity to go through go
- 45:34through life. It still sucks, but it
- 45:36gets better and I feel like there's more
- 45:37rewards, but I'm not sure. I'm just
- 45:40hoping for the happy ending.
- 45:43>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 45:46Well, I like that. And I I think that,
- 45:50you know, on a
- 45:53long enough horizon, like happy ending
- 45:56is just what time frame you choose to to
- 46:00make the ending, right? like
- 46:02>> you know even you know even in like with
- 46:05my laundromat when it was failing and I
- 46:07was like five years into it and still
- 46:09struggling and stuff it that was not a
- 46:12happy ending but
- 46:14>> but right now I'm sitting here talking
- 46:17to you which is very cool and I'm also
- 46:19just past the camera is the beach
- 46:22because I'm in Hawaii right now right
- 46:24and but it's also not my ending you know
- 46:26it's still part of the journey right so
- 46:29but I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for
- 46:31the laundromat sucking so much.
- 46:34>> You're honestly the goat. Like I've when
- 46:36I started my laundromat, I was watching
- 46:38your videos. I was watching your
- 46:39interviews. So I've like re the second I
- 46:41saw your name, any email you said, I was
- 46:43like, "Okay, I'll be there."
- 46:45>> That's so cool. Well, I appreciate that.
- 46:48And and honestly, I'm going to I'm going
- 46:50to kind of reflect it back to you a
- 46:52little bit because the Rio goats are
- 46:54people like you who are willing to come
- 46:56on and share your experience and you
- 46:58know because I learn a lot you know from
- 47:01hearing your experience and and other
- 47:03guests who come on the show and so I and
- 47:05I know it's like a sacrifice for you and
- 47:08you know you you should probably be
- 47:10sleeping now. It's not 10 pm yet for
- 47:12you. So no I'm just kidding. I just got
- 47:14[laughter]
- 47:16uh No, but I really do I really do
- 47:18appreciate it and and you know, nobody
- 47:20has to give up their time to come on
- 47:22here and share their story and
- 47:23especially in like it's really difficult
- 47:26to do while you're in the middle of
- 47:28trying to figure it out. Um and so I
- 47:31really like admire that and appreciate
- 47:33that and I think a lot of people will uh
- 47:37admire that also but also get a lot out
- 47:39of it. Um because this industry not as
- 47:43much on this channel but
- 47:45>> you know it can be painted in a very
- 47:49you know sunshine and rainbows light
- 47:51right it's a you know passive easy like
- 47:55all these things 95% success rate make
- 47:58it sound easy but here's the reality is
- 48:01like sometimes it's not easy and you got
- 48:04to figure it out but that's part of
- 48:06being an entrepreneur right is solving
- 48:10problems,
- 48:12figuring out, you know,
- 48:15difficult things and turning them
- 48:17around. Like that's what we do is we
- 48:19solve I heard somebody say an
- 48:21entrepreneur is somebody who just solves
- 48:23problems for a profit, right?
- 48:26>> Uh you're still in the middle of solving
- 48:28that problem and getting to the profit
- 48:29part, but you're going to get there.
- 48:31Like I I don't have any doubt you're
- 48:32going to get there. Uh for sure. Um, but
- 48:36it it's just a matter of walking through
- 48:38what you got to walk through to get
- 48:39there, which, you know, probably won't
- 48:42be fun for a little bit.
- 48:44>> Well, no, I appreciate you so much for
- 48:46like even inviting me to the show. I
- 48:48feel like you guys you have so many
- 48:50people that you could interview. You're
- 48:51in Hawaii. I would I hope you enjoy your
- 48:53time. I didn't I don't want to take up
- 48:55too much of your vacation.
- 48:56>> No, it's not my Well, we bought a house
- 48:58here. I'm This is like
- 49:01>> You live in Hawaii and Orange County,
- 49:03California. We bounce back and forth.
- 49:05We're This is what I'm saying is like I
- 49:08would not be doing that if my laundromat
- 49:10didn't suck and I didn't lose a bunch of
- 49:13money. And
- 49:15>> you know, it just it took me on this
- 49:17weird path where I was the world's worst
- 49:20laundromat owner for a little while
- 49:22>> and then,
- 49:23you know, figured a few things out and
- 49:26started sharing some lessons and then
- 49:27that turned into a YouTube channel and
- 49:31then that turned into a podcast and then
- 49:33that turned into, hey, I'm going to jump
- 49:35on calls with people and try to help
- 49:37them with their get their laundromat or
- 49:39fix their laundromat or whatever or grow
- 49:40their laundromat. And then that turned
- 49:42into like this weird online business
- 49:44that I'm doing. And I never planned it.
- 49:47And I could never have planned it. And
- 49:49it never would have happened if I didn't
- 49:51go through the problems that I went
- 49:54through with that first laundromat and
- 49:56become the person that I've become up to
- 49:59this point because I wouldn't be the
- 50:02same guy without those problems. And
- 50:04that's part of like that forging process
- 50:07that you are in the middle of right now,
- 50:10which is not pleasant. But uh I'm like
- 50:14100% convinced that if you just
- 50:17persevere, whatever that looks like, you
- 50:19just don't give up.
- 50:21>> It doesn't that means maybe maybe not
- 50:23giving up looks like selling the
- 50:24laundromat and going all in into real
- 50:26estate even more or pivoting to a
- 50:29different business or a different
- 50:30laundromat or whatever. But whatever it
- 50:32is, you just don't give up. You're for
- 50:35sure going to be successful. Like it's
- 50:38going to happen because you have that
- 50:40mindset that you need and you have the
- 50:41drive that you need uh to get there. So,
- 50:46I'm excited. I'm excited for you. I know
- 50:48that you're in a rough spot right now,
- 50:50but I think that you're in the beginning
- 50:53phases of digging your way out of that
- 50:55and having something special happen.
- 50:58I do.
- 51:00Yeah. I
- 51:02I feel like I don't know how to say it.
- 51:05Um delusional, but I feel like that's
- 51:09the kind of delusion I have to have in
- 51:11order to make it anywhere. And I don't
- 51:12know what's going to happen in the
- 51:14future, but it's like I think every
- 51:16business is working super hard, seeing
- 51:18no results, and then keeping on going.
- 51:20And like I'm
- 51:22I am a little bit nervous and scared,
- 51:24but I feel like the only way I get over
- 51:27that is by trying to do something about
- 51:28it. So, I'm happy.
- 51:31Yeah, I think that's exactly right. And
- 51:34a delusion is
- 51:37probably the primary characteristic of
- 51:40anybody who's had any success in
- 51:42business. Like genuinely mean like
- 51:44that's a great word for that's probably
- 51:47the number one characteristic of a
- 51:49successful business owner is delusion
- 51:52because you got to be able to see things
- 51:53that other people don't see or think are
- 51:56crazy. Like you got to be able to see
- 51:58that. Uh, so that's why I'm saying like
- 52:00I'm not worried about you. You have the
- 52:03right kind of delusion and willing to
- 52:05put in the effort behind the del. That's
- 52:07where it really comes down to you. You
- 52:08got to believe it and then you got to be
- 52:10able to put the mountains of effort
- 52:12behind that delusion to be able to make
- 52:15it into something. And that's where
- 52:17you're at right now. You weren't there,
- 52:19but that's where you're at right now.
- 52:23>> I'm excited. We're gonna have to do
- 52:24another one of these and get an update
- 52:26when you're crushing it or you sell it
- 52:29for a boat boatload of money and uh you
- 52:33know we hear you can tell us all how you
- 52:35did it. Exactly. It'd be great. That'll
- 52:38be great. Awesome. Uh anything else we
- 52:40need to cover or any other um parts of
- 52:43your story or lessons or anything you
- 52:45feel like you learned before we wrap
- 52:47this thing up? Um,
- 52:50I think
- 52:53I think for now I think that's it.
- 52:57>> Okay. Okay. Um, real quick before we
- 53:01before we told actually I have one more
- 53:02question, but before we wrap it up with
- 53:04one last question. I guess this is a
- 53:06question too, so maybe two last
- 53:08questions, but remind us once again,
- 53:10where can people find your content?
- 53:12>> Uh,
- 53:13>> I'm on um Instagram, Tik Tok, and
- 53:15YouTube. Our handle is the clean and
- 53:17comfy laundry or clean and comfy
- 53:18laundry. To be honest, I forgot.
- 53:21>> Yeah,
- 53:22>> that's what I said. [laughter]
- 53:24>> You got it. Came back to you. You're all
- 53:26good. Um, okay. Last question I have for
- 53:29you, and I'm just curious. We kind of we
- 53:31kind of covered this a little bit, but
- 53:32last question I have for you is anybody
- 53:35who's out there looking to buy their
- 53:37first laundromat, you two years ago,
- 53:40>> what's your number one piece of advice
- 53:42for them?
- 53:49I
- 53:52I think the first thing is that to
- 53:55expect it to take 10 times more effort
- 53:57than you expect and then to also factor
- 53:59in the numbers. It's
- 54:02there's a lot of hype around, oh, you'll
- 54:05just buy this business, you'll make
- 54:06money, but every asset that you get can
- 54:08quickly turn into a liability. There's a
- 54:10lot of opportunities to lose money. And
- 54:12then I would just ask them to look at
- 54:14every area where they could lose money.
- 54:16And the third thing is probably
- 54:19I don't know. I think that was it. Like
- 54:21I feel like for me I feel like I'm the
- 54:23worst person to ask cuz people start
- 54:24asking me for advice on Instagram and
- 54:26I'm I'm like we're not even profitable.
- 54:29I can't tell you anything. But I
- 54:32for now the only thing that I can give
- 54:34advice on is just keep going cuz it's
- 54:37like this is hell but we still show up
- 54:40every day so it works.
- 54:41>> [laughter]
- 54:42>> Yeah. What's the There's another quote
- 54:45that I'm probably going to butcher, but
- 54:46it's like when you find yourself in
- 54:48hell, like walking through hell, just
- 54:50keep going or something like that,
- 54:51right? Just
- 54:52>> only way out of it is to go through it.
- 54:55So, just go through it. But I love that.
- 54:59Go uh listen, go subscribe to all the
- 55:02channels over there. Uh show her some
- 55:05love, show her some support. I know a
- 55:07lot of us have gone through this if not
- 55:09in this industry, you know, in some sort
- 55:12of investing or business or something
- 55:14like that. A lot of us have gone through
- 55:16something similar and uh you know, we
- 55:19know like you've just got to persevere
- 55:21through it and it's going to pay off for
- 55:23you in the long run, but in the short
- 55:26term, it's not fun. It's not fun. But
- 55:29thank you so much for coming on. really
- 55:31really appreciate you taking the time
- 55:33and uh chatting and sharing your story,
- 55:36being vulnerable and upfront and open
- 55:39and honest. And uh like I said, we're
- 55:41definitely going to do another one of
- 55:42these because I am confident that you're
- 55:44going to turn this thing around and we
- 55:46want to hear all about that as well. Uh
- 55:50so we'll stay in touch. Yeah.
- 55:53Awesome. All right. Hope you love that
- 55:56episode with the CDS. So much good stuff
- 55:58in there. And listen, she is she put it
- 56:02all all out on the line for us and told
- 56:04us exactly how things are going, all the
- 56:07struggles, the good, the bad, the ugly.
- 56:09And kudos to her and a huge shout out
- 56:11and thank you for her for coming on and
- 56:13sharing that story. And uh listen,
- 56:17all of this will have been a waste of
- 56:19time for you if you don't pick something
- 56:21and put it into action. Even if it's
- 56:23just, hey, take some action towards
- 56:25getting that first laundromat now. take
- 56:27the leap that you've been scared to
- 56:28take. Uh get in get in the game here.
- 56:31Get in the game like Acidia and uh you
- 56:33know, we'll work it out along the way
- 56:34and we'll get you that financial freedom
- 56:36that you're looking for. Awesome. We'll
- 56:38see you in the next one. Peace.
