- 0:00If crime was legal for one day, no
- 0:02consequences, no punishment. Would you
- 0:05join in? That's the world of the purge.
- 0:08The movie purge. One night a year, all
- 0:11laws are suspended. The government
- 0:13claims it reduces crime and unemployment
- 0:15in the long term. A brutal night to
- 0:18create a safer society. It's fiction,
- 0:20but the philosophy behind it is very
- 0:22real. And the philosophy behind is
- 0:24utilitarism. Do whatever brings the
- 0:27greatest good for the greatest number.
- 0:29But here's the problem. If you let
- 0:31innocent people die so majority can live
- 0:34comfortably, is that moral? Benther
- 0:38might say yes because the outcome
- 0:40justifies the cost. But K would question
- 0:42that. He would say some acts like murder
- 0:44are always wrong no matter the result.
- 0:47The purge isn't just a horror movie.
- 0:50It's a thought experiment in disguise.
- 0:52What happens when we trade human dignity
- 0:54for statistical peace? When ethics
- 0:56becomes math, people become expendable.
- 0:59So, could the purge ever be morally
- 1:02justified? And on a very personal note,
- 1:04I have a question. Would you join in if
- 1:06it meant a better world?
